The moment in which climate stops being an abstract concept
that moment came when my children started talking about climate change
What they were discussing was their future: the world they would be living in
And it certainly wasn’t the world I wanted for them
The only positive was that as a leader within a large industrial company
I was in a position to help do something about it
I’ve spent four years running the group’s Transit business prior to my current role as Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer
From my vantage point I believe that together
Wabtec operates in an industry—rail—that has enormous potential to make a difference
The transportation sector today accounts for around a quarter of global CO2 emissions*
yet the majority of these emissions come from road transport
Only around 1% of transport emissions are from rail
This is despite the fact that rail accounts for around 7% of passenger travel and 6% of freight transport
Persuading businesses and people to choose rail over road
represents the single biggest opportunity to radically reduce emissions from transportation
We can achieve this modal shift by making trains more comfortable
And we can further shift the dial by accelerating the development of technology that helps drastically cut emissions
we’ve long been engaged in strategic investments in cutting-edge digital and locomotive technologies
eco-efficient passenger rail equipment solutions
We aim to lead the way on decarbonization and sustainability
providing the technology our customers will need to achieve their own climate objectives
from biofuel- and hydrogen- powered locomotives to digital solutions that optimize fuel usage and efficiency or friction brakes that reduces small particles emissions
developing technology is not the only challenge
Our internal measurements show that by far the greatest emissions from our products are from our customers’ use (Scope 3 in sustainability speak)
That makes finding ways to actively increase our customers’ adoption of new sustainable technologies a priority
Our new climate commitments to be published shortly in our Climate Report reflect this
Our focus on collaboration—whether with customers
industry partners or each other—is at the heart of everything we do
and reflects one of my profound convictions
Technology only gets you part of the way: meaningful
People power and the sustainability snowball effect
We see this in action every day at Wabtec with our own people
Canada site set themselves the challenge of rethinking everything they do in terms of sustainability
they have managed to cut their impact across the board through ideas ranging from running shuttle services between plants to fostering biodiversity on site and installing waterless urinals
I’ve also seen the snowball effect that comes from inspiring each other
our team at our Piossasco site in Italy decided they would collect data and publish their own sustainability report
showcasing all the initiatives they had put in place
two more teams were inspired to do the same
sometimes replicating or bringing new ideas to the table
eight of our sites around the world produce their own report
They have generated many more initiatives than we could have launched centrally—a great example of the snowball effect we are seeing as sustainability actions gain momentum across the business
With the exception of myself and a handful of others
no one else at Wabtec has this in their job description
Everyone else is contributing to the sustainability cause on top of their existing role
The projects they develop and put into action create bonds between colleagues and it generates a healthy sense of pride and competition
The collective energy created is extraordinary
It is for this reason that we decided to launch a new initiative this Earth Day: the Wabtec Sustainability Awards
We are inviting people across our company to submit projects that support one of our three sustainability principles: Innovating with Purpose
Our aim is to recognize the people working tirelessly across Wabtec to improve our impact—and to enable the snowball to grow larger and larger
By acting for positive change in the world
we are making Wabtec more attractive for individuals who want to work for a company that is making a difference
talented individuals who are moved by a cause that is bigger than their individual aspirations will bring their skills and energy to the industry for as many years as I have
Transportation solutions that revolutionize the way the world moves
we help our customers overcome their toughest challenges by delivering rail and industrial solutions that improve safety

RTE is installing a 190-km line of European solidarity
This new and entirely underground interconnector will link the Grand-Île substation (Sainte-Hélène du Lac) to the Piossasco substation (Turin)
It will bolster exchange capacity and electrical solidarity between France and Italy while also supporting the energy transition
Covering a distance of 95 km on the French side
this underground power line melds seamlessly with existing road infrastructure
thereby preserving the beauty of Savoie landscapes and helping to boost the local economy
Yet another building block in the construction of Europe’s power system
this new direct-current interconnector will be the longest of the world’s interconnectors with equivalent levels of power and voltage
It is a unique project that primarily aims to bolster mutual exchange capacities
improve the sharing of resources and facilitate cross-border power exchanges
The interconnector will bring the maximum exchange capacity between France and Italy to 4450 MW
It will also facilitate integration of renewables into the French and Italian power systems
The connector melds seamlessly with existing road infrastructure
whilst also running through the Fréjus road tunnel over a distance of 6.5 km
This environmental coherence is the result of close coordination between all local players over the period of 2010 to 2012 within the 33 affected communities
as well as close cooperation with road and highway agencies (AREA
it is the first time that an underground interconnector has been combined with a motorway in order to minimise the use of space
This unprecedented approach has even required amendments to the highway code
The new interconnector requires the use of the most advanced technologies in order to transmit electricity over such a long underground distance at such levels of power and voltage
Spanning a length of 190 km in order to connect the Grande-Île substation (Sainte-Hélène-du-Lac) and the Piossasco substation (near Turin)
it is the world’s longest underground line using this type of technology
It has broken the previous record established by the 65-km interconnector between France and Spain
With 500 million Euros’ worth of capital expenditure being committed in France and the same amount in Italy
the Savoie-Piémont project will considerably boost the local economy
Local manpower and contract companies have naturally been used for work on civil structures and on the converter station
This has amounted to a total of almost 35 million Euros in economic spin-offs (excluding accommodation and meals) for local businesses with 100 to 150 people being hired over the 6 years of civil-engineering work and 80 to 140 people over the 3 years of work on the converter station
the 90 000 cubic meters of excavation material have also been used by Savoyard businesses

Prysmian not only holds a leading position in network communication cabling solutions; we are also a global leader in energy cabling…
A consortium of seven companies led by Prysmian Group will be realising a High Voltage Direct Current interconnection between Italy and France
Total value of the project - for the consortium -
the transmission system operators in Italy and France is higher than € 500 m
The ‘Piemonte-Savoia’ interconnection is an underground High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cable project
which plays a strategic role in increasing the security of power supply and enabling energy exchange between Italy and France up to 1200 MW
The project represents an important new step towards the creation of a single European energy market
The full project comprises of a ± 320 kV extruded HVDC underground cable turnkey system
production and installation of two 600 MW bipolar circuits along a 190 km land route between the substations of Piossasco
near Turin (Italy) and Grand’Ile in Savoy (France)
The cable will cross approximately 95 kilometres in each country
The link is the longest of its type and sets a world record for HVDC underground interconnections using extruded cable technology
“Prysmian Group will be coordinating the design
installation - including civil works - and commissioning of the interconnection,” explains Alessandro Panico
we will provide the HVDC underground cable systems
These are insulated with extruded material technology
and CEBAT srl will provide civil works and installation on the Italian side and Gauthey
Serpollet and Sobeca will provide civil works and installation on the French side
This project re-affirms our worldwide leadership in the strategic high valueadded sector of HVDC grid connection projects.”
“The client needed a secure power supply and power exchange between Italy and France
we had to take into account an extremely complicated installation route with tunnels and viaducts
Prysmian has an undisputedly wide track record in HVDC cable – possibly the largest amongst competitors - and we also underwent a long qualification programme”
Prysmian Group recently announced the successful commissioning and hand-over of the HVDC offshore grid connections BorWin2 and HelWin1 and the DC land section of Skagerrak 4
Two further DC offshore grid connection projects
SylWin1 and HelWin2 are nearing completion
Prysmian is currently also involved in the HVDC cable systems for the DolWin3 and BorWin3 projects
Another HVDC interconnection (France - Spain) realized by Prysmian is near completion and will start operations shortly
“We are proud to make our technologies and our experience available to the realisation of a project with such a high strategic value” said Valerio Battista
“The development of power transmission interconnections is of paramount importance in Europe and Prysmian is a key player.”
