10 graduate students took to the stage to compete in Dal’s annual 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition
with medical neuroscience PhD student Reynaldo Popoli earning this year’s winning title with his presentation on improving the quality of life for patients living with the neurological disorder ALS
March 19 in the Dalhousie Student Union Building
challenged competitors to present their research to a non-specialist audience in three engaging minutes or less
using only one static PowerPoint slide as a visual aid
Five master’s and five PhD students shared their research
especially to my colleagues that allowed me to practice my presentation and provided invaluable feedback,” he says
Popoli’s presentation called attention to the devastating impacts of ALS — a disease that affects the cells in our bodies that control our muscles
These cells originate in the brain and spinal cord and travel to the muscles
forming connections called neuromuscular junctions
and these connections are left non-functional
“The goal of my research is to understand some of the changes that occur in ALS
in the connections between the cells that control our movements and their respective muscles
we hope we can use different therapeutic approaches to slow down disease progression and improve symptoms,” he says
Popoli’s research looks at drugs that help regulate and maintain the integrity of the neuromuscular junction
He has shown that the use of these drugs in ALS make symptoms progress much slower and maintain neuromuscular junctions for longer
allowing for a 10 per cent increase in life expectancy and better quality of life for patients
but I’m hopeful that with this novel research
we’ll be able to find new treatments for this devastating disease.”
Moradi earned second place and a $500 prize
presenting on the use of artificial intelligence to detect seizures in animals and how this model can be applied to better predict epilepsy in humans who have suffered head injuries
Trumble placed third in the competition and won $250 with a presentation covering the differences in how people develop health problems as they age in relation to heart disease
The remaining eight finalists each earned $100 prizes for their inspiring presentations

“It challenges students to take what could be very technologically or theoretically complex research — or better yet
both — and make it accessible and interesting to anyone.”
Kim Brooks invited the crowd to relish the opportunity to celebrate the extraordinary research happening on campus

Popoli plans to close for a second …
CEDAR RAPIDS — Popoli Ristorante & Sullivan’s Bar, brought back by popular demand in September after a long closure
The restaurant announced last week plans to close for good on May 8. Staring June 1, the space at 101 Third Ave. SW, the historic People’s Bank building, will become an event center operated by Peppercorn Food Company
Popoli first closed in December 2020
“We wish to thank all of our loyal customers
suppliers and service providers for their support throughout the years,” the restaurant said on its social media announcement
co-owner Gary Rozek told The Gazette that feedback from customers hoping for a comeback and new circumstances for its catering arm meant that the “timing was right to get back in business.”
“We had built our business on theater events
None of those things we built the business on were happening at the time we closed down,” Rozek said before the 2021 reopening

Do you know of something going on we should cover
Like multitudes of students around the nation in early 2020
Elise Franchi had to take virtual classes as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold
But studying dance on Zoom might have contributed to what eventually was diagnosed as a partially torn labrum in her left hip
“We think because I didn’t have proper flooring and it was slippery, it caused me to grip in my hips too much to stay stabilized,” says Elise, an 18-year-old trainee in the Charlotte Ballet Pre-Professional Program
“That’s when the problem started.”
and eventually it progressed into intense pain
and it was very terrifying,” says Elise
so it took me a few months before the pain got bad enough to see the doctor.”
Charlotte Ballet referred her to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, where she received care from David Popoli, MD, and Allston Stubbs IV, MD, at the new Performing Arts Medicine Clinic in Winston-Salem
As one of the few programs in the country offering these unique performing arts and sports medicine services
Elise received the specialized care needed and has since resumed dancing and is participating in a treasured December tradition
“I’m back to performing in the Nutcracker this holiday season!” she says
I’m able to do everything I need to do
and I’ve worked with their experts on modifying my technique and performances in a healthy way.”
Popoli says athletes and performing artists such as dancers reach their highest levels by making small
The Performing Arts Medicine Clinic has physicians and physical therapists who are specifically trained in treating dancers
Patients receive treatment for their injuries and instructions on making their movements healthier
“Very few sports use the same movements as dance
Our specialists understand the things you need to do
“And we are able to guide you through that process in a healthy way so you can get back to performing
He says Elise had an acute injury (partially torn labrum)
underlying chronic injury (fraying of the labrum)
The latter is somewhat common among dancers
“They have a tendency to wear down the labrum and start moving their leg in different ways to avoid the pain,” Dr
“That change can ultimately lead to acute injuries
“Our job as specialists is to not only make the leg feel better
but also train the performer out of the movement patterns they learned when trying to compensate for the pain,” he says
if you don’t also address the underlying condition
that performer will fail in their recovery
It’s important to know this and to go to a specialist trained in performing arts medicine and dance medicine for this reason.”
Elise worked diligently throughout physical therapy to strengthen her hip
“We also did a state-of-the-art biomechanical analysis
“It allowed them to see the motions I make and how they needed to be corrected in a healthy way.”
Elise hates having to sit out due to injury
“Our team empathizes with our dancers and will help them get back as soon as possible
but it’s important that their comeback is staged
but make sure you are progressing through the right steps to stay healthy
The team also likes to restore a dancer’s confidence by helping them
to get back out there and be in a performance or role with a lower chance of injury
“Having that team component of our doctors
and biomechanical researchers – plus
the patient’s artistic director – helps us achieve this in the best possible way for our performers,” says Dr
Elise might not be dancing in the Nutcracker this month
She says there’s virtually no pain and her performance has improved
”I’m able to lift my leg higher than 90 degrees now,” she says
I wasn’t able to lift it past 45 degrees
It’s been really exciting to recover
Elise wants other performers to know that an injury like this surprisingly is not the end of the world
“You won’t have to stop dancing if you get proper treatment and take the right steps
I recommend any dancer or performer go to the Performing Arts Medicine Clinic.”

according to the Iowa Restaurant Association
The restaurant’s soft opening will debut a menu with many old Italian and American favorites in addition to more midpriced options and daily specials management hopes will appeal to more diners
the restaurant will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 4 to 10 p.m
“We’re really proud of the building

“There’s more buzz going on certainly than there was a year ago.”

Foxboro’s reputation as a de facto New England place also brought Tom and Joyce Husband to the outdoor tent

and someone at the hotel told us to go here,” Bartz said
“I don’t know much about the teams or the game
but it’s the Super Bowl,” Spreckelsen said
Popoli had sold tickets throughout the first half and had a drawing during halftime
