Today, it’s known simply as the Potenza Lodge. “This lodge was a safe haven for those early immigrants. Some of them were destitute. They came over here with five or $10 in their pocket,” Pergola said. At the time, newly arrived immigrants coming to the United States “had to have a sponsor,” Pergola said. “After they left Ellis Island, [they would] take the train all the way to Denver, after they'd been bouncing on the ocean for two weeks, to their sponsor's home.” From the group's founding in 1899, immigrants whose lineage traced back to Potenza could seek help from the lodge. “It was a haven. It was a source of comfort,” Pergola said. A place where they could find “help in learning the language, interpreting documents, housing, employment and a very important area: Mushada. Mushada means 'matchmaking.'” As the group grew, from four founders to hundreds of members, they needed a brick and mortar. Angelo Stone “gave a big loan” and after two years of construction from 1939 to 1941, the group built their current lodge, Pergola said. Over the years, the lodge’s purpose shifted from providing services to newly arrived immigrants, to preserving cultural traditions by bringing community together for events, like the annual St. Rocco’s Feast and Carnivale. But one early practice is no longer welcome: “Male chauvinism,” Pergola said. “The early Italians, they did not even allow women to become members until 50 years after they organized.” The Women’s Auxiliary has since become a key part of the lodge’s leadership, working with the men to plan events and keep the building in good shape. “It really fills my heart to be here,” said Lisa Lokken, who’s been the Women’s Auxiliary President for four years. “I am actually the third generation in my family [to be a] member here,” Lokken said. She currently serves on the board with her mom and her daughter. In the entrance to the lodge, Lokken’s photo hangs beneath that of her grandmother, Carol Perito, who also served as the Women’s Auxiliary President. “As much as the Italian is in our blood, the lodge is,” she said. But keeping younger generations engaged is becoming a bigger challenge every year. Frank James Percy, the Potenza Lodge President, said as times are changing, “everybody has their own thing to do” outside of the lodge, and fewer people are willing to take on the responsibilities of running the organization. Percy said the job of president is usually a one-year obligation. But he’s been doing it for 11 years. He takes the responsibility seriously. “Without this building, there would be no heritage,” he said. The Potenza Lodge is leaning on some of its younger members to reach out on social media in the hopes they can keep the organization going for another 125 years. “We would welcome anyone who wants to join us,” Pergola said. While their bylaws still state that members must have a lineage tracing back to Potenza, she said the lodge invites honorary members of any ancestry to take part. “We are joyful people. Italians like to eat and drink, sing and dance. They laugh easily, they support each other. They're there for each other in times of crisis. And I personally am very proud to be an Italian,” she said. As long as you share those values, “everybody's welcome,” she said. Don't be confused by the "RACE" name as the tire isn't a dedicated R-compound track tire (a competition tire of that type requires heat cycling and has low grip in the wet) Bridgestone explains that the RACE is the ideal choice for those who want a drive to the circuit on the same tires they use on the circuit (consider the tire a one-stop shop for those seeking to maximize performance without needing a dedicated second set of track tires) To demonstrate the world-class capabilities and performance of the new tire Bridgestone worked with Lamborghini to offer a custom Potenza RACE tire for the automaker's track-prepared V10-powered Huracán STO exotic Bridgestone explains the RACE features an enhanced rubber compound in the tread area that maximizes grip and handling in dry conditions—a unique tread pattern for rear tire sizes features a broader shoulder rib for maximum dry performance "Cornering power and braking are maximized by the outboard while the inboard section of the pattern focuses on maintaining suitable use in wet conditions," says the tiremaker The sidewalls and tire carcass are engineered to maximize contact area by equalizing the pressure across the tire—keeping the tread flat on the road's surface Asymmetric tread and wall angles on the Potenza RACE increase lateral stiffness and reduce block deformation and they delivered impressive track performance I was more interested in experiencing their performance on public roads specifically determining if they are a worthy alternative to the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 and Pirelli P Zero Corsa—two popular ultra-high-performance competitors battling for the same market My opportunity came earlier this month when I was able to drive a late-model Porsche 911 fitted with Bridgestone Potenza RACE tires (staggered sized 245/35-20 and 305/30-20) on some of LA's freeways and most challenging canyon roads—it was an excellent opportunity to evaluate the tires under real-world conditions Almost immediately after climbing behind the wheel and running through the gears I noted that the "turn-in" (the responsiveness of the vehicle's movement to the wheel being turned) is near-instantaneous with the Bridgestone RACE The steering felt more precise and accurate allowing me to effortlessly put the tires precisely where (and when) I desired I've driven other tires with the same attribute—typically achieved with super stiff sidewalls—but the RACE never felt harsh or abusive Bridgestone hypes that some rear fitments (e.g. 305/30-20) are a "semi-slick" design with expansive areas of tread without sipes or cuts for tread blocks While this provides fly paper levels of grip yet Bridgestone has kept the sound levels very reasonable—cabin conversation is not challenging And it's worth noting that they don't suffer from "tramlining" (when a tire follows a groove in the road's surface) on the highway This size (305/30-20) of the Bridgestone RACE is a semi-slick the RACE delivers exactly what Bridgestone advertises—crisp turn-in followed by plenty of stability remaining very stable as the g-forces build—impressively smooth through long sweeping corners tire break-away is predictable (there is zero tire squeal or howling during cornering) which aligns with the company's performance claim for the tire I am very impressed with the new Bridgestone RACE I'd choose it over the Pirelli P Zero Corsa as the Bridgestone feels better when cold and gives the impression of being more forgiving of temperature swings (the Pirelli works well when warm) The RACE feels on par with the Michelin Cup 2 on public roads I'd like to try them back-to-back on a racing circuit before I make an unsubstantiated claim about ultimate grip while tolerating extreme track temperatures The bottom line is that the Bridgestone RACE is a praiseworthy alternative to some of the best ultra-high-performance tires on the market has been chosen by Audi to develop bespoke ultra-high-performance tyres for the new Audi e-tron GT family The collaboration continues Bridgestone’s long-standing relationship with Audi with nearly every fifth car that the manufacturer sells globally equipped with Bridgestone tyres Bridgestone developed a tyre to perfectly match the Audi e-tron GT’s “pure performance without compromise” ethos The result is the Bridgestone Potenza Sport A premium tyre which has been developed to enhance the high-performance capabilities of the new Audi e-tron GT the Bridgestone Potenza Sport A endured Audi’s rigorous testing The tyre was recognised for providing the top performance required by Audi’s latest fully-electric S to RS performance models The Potenza Sport A is Bridgestone’s first mass-produced tyre to incorporate 55% recycled and renewable materials1 following certification from International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS2 “Through tyres such as the Bridgestone Potenza Sport A we’re proud to be making mobility more sustainable even for super high performing and powerful vehicles such as the new Audi e-tron GT,” commented Steven De Bock “Our innovative tyres are helping to drive the next generation of electric vehicles The Bridgestone Potenza Sport A marks the latest step in our trusted and strategic partnership with Audi.”   The Bridgestone Potenza Sport A tyre delivers best-in-class energy efficiency and extended battery range The tyre boasts an EU label A grade in rolling resistance contributing to the Audi e-tron GT’s exceptional range of around 500km It also delivers outstanding safety and control to drivers achieving a best-in-class EU label A grade for wet grip This complements the Audi e-tron GT’s highly precise steering response during dynamic driving The Potenza Sport A tyre’s construction includes a unique tread design reinforcement technology and a carcass design that’s specifically tailored to the e-tron GT Bridgestone’s premium tyre has been custom-engineered to optimize handling the Audi RS e-tron GT performance is a blisteringly quick car that has been fully trimmed for driving dynamics Delivering such performance and meeting our high standards regarding safety and sustainability the Bridgestone Potenza Sport A is the perfect fit.” The Bridgestone Potenza Sport A premium tyre has been developed with Bridgestone’s ENLITEN Technology to improve its sustainability characteristics and make it fully EV-ready without any compromise on safety or performance ENLITEN Technology typically enables a lower environmental impact through CO2 emissions reduction resource efficiency and material circularity The technology platform also enables Bridgestone to satisfy the major needs of electric vehicles such as the Audi e-tron GT Demonstrating Bridgestone’s innovative capabilities to combine sustainability and performance the new Potenza Sport A tyre marks another key milestone on the company’s journey toward using 100% sustainable materials by 20503 the Bridgestone Potenza Sport A will be available in 265/35 R21 101XL Y (front) and 305/30 R21 104XL Y (rear) sizes The premium tyre will be manufactured at Bridgestone’s cutting-edge plant near Rome The Roma plant is ISO 50001 certified for efficient energy management This further contributes to Bridgestone’s sustainability ambitions An earthquake of magnitude 4,2 occurred today This was reported by matches Potenza is playing home against Juventus Next Gen on Sun Custom-developed Bridgestone Potenza Race tires have been designed to enhance the incredible capabilities of the Lamborghini Huracán STO and let drivers experience true high-performance Building on Bridgestone’s long heritage in Formula One racing and high-performance vehicles the premium Potenza Race semi-slick tire has been customized for the first time for the Lamborghini Huracán STO the tire’s tread is lined with the colors of Italy’s il Tricolore – a nod to the fact that both the tire and vehicle have been designed in Italy – and features Lamborghini’s distinctive markings The custom Bridgestone Potenza Race tire promises excellent dry grip which increases grip and handling in dry conditions The tire also boasts long-lasting on-track performance and outstanding lap time ability – a result of maximized contact area and even pressure distribution And with a carcass design that enables high-performance on normal roads the tire is engineered for both the road and track Development of the Bridgestone Potenza Race tire relied heavily on the company’s ground-breaking virtual tire modeling and simulation technologies which enable a digital twin of a tire to be developed and tested virtual design and simulation enabled Bridgestone and Lamborghini to find the Huracán STO’s optimal match to maximize the tire’s contact area and distribute pressure evenly under the most severe cornering The use of this technology ensured that the Huracán STO’s tire development period was reduced1 while offering increased flexibility The virtual environment enables many more variants of a given tire to be tested thanks to the extreme speed of modifying the digital twin of the tire and immediately submitting it to a subjective test on the driving simulator to ultimately cut the vehicle’s time to market The use of virtual technologies also ensures that the chosen tire is the ideal fitment as many alternatives have been assessed during development and it helps to deliver various environmental benefits: both natural resource use and exhaust emissions are cut as fewer prototype tires are required to be built and physical testing is reduced.2 custom-engineered Bridgestone Potenza Race tires are now available as an optional fitment on Lamborghini’s Huracán STO the Lamborghini Huracán STO is also available with custom Bridgestone Potenza Sport tires to maximize the supercar’s incredible performance on the road “It’s brilliant to collaborate once again with Lamborghini especially as sole tire supplier for the incredible Huracán STO,” said Steven De Bock consumer replacement and original equipment at Bridgestone EMIA “We already proudly launched our custom Potenza Sport tires for the vehicle and now we’re excited to provide Potenza Race tires specifically for track-goers and high-performance enthusiasts Both tires maximize the vehicle’s impressive capabilities in different ways and I’m proud to speak for a team who are able to provide this level of detail and coverage to Lamborghini customers.” “We are pleased to have selected Bridgestone again to develop two tires specifically for the Huracán STO: first Potenza Sport and now Potenza Race,” said Maurizio Reggiani chief technical officer of Automobili Lamborghini “These two custom Bridgestone options synchronize perfectly with the Huracán STO’s innate dynamic capabilities providing drivers with a tire that responds effortlessly in a variety of performance settings and maximizing our super sports car’s capabilities on both road and track.” *1 Bridgestone’s virtual tire development can cut product development time and outdoor and fleet tire tests by up to 50 percent *2 Around 200 tires are saved for every single project Bridgestone’s virtual tire development is used in leading to a savings of around 60 percent on raw materials and CO2 emissions during the tire development phase If you're a successfully treat compulsive habits What behaviours can be considered addictions but whether they should be labelled as addictions is an ongoing debate Given that more people are growing up with digital technology considering a broader range of Internet-related activities as potentially addictive seems important for addiction researchers the DSM–5 uses a more stringent threshold for diagnosing gambling disorder (it must meet 4 or more inclusionary criteria out of 9) or Internet gaming disorder (5 or more out of 10) than it does for diagnosing substance-use disorders (2 or more inclusionary criteria out of 11); we must take care not to underestimate how widespread such non-substance behaviours are and the negative impact that they can have on public health Another controversial topic is sex addiction. Formal criteria for hypersexual disorder have been proposed and tested4 but the condition was not included in the DSM–5 debate exists about where to set the threshold between normal and abnormal levels of sexual activity similarities in cognitive and biological changes involving craving and reward circuitry have been noted between compulsive sexual behaviours and substance and gambling addictions and scales assessing addiction-like features such as craving seem relevant to aspects of sexual behaviours A better understanding of aetiological and associated factors such as to what extent psychological and biological determinants linked to gambling and substance addictions also relate to hypersexuality should help classification efforts and promote the development of targeted treatments patients receiving dopamine-boosting treatment for Parkinson's disease have sometimes developed excessive eating suggesting that there may be a biological link that drives all of these behaviours But there are nuances: although obesity has been found to share biological features with substance addictions the variety of ways that the condition manifests itself suggests that only a subset of individuals with obesity may be characterized by food addiction individuals with binge-eating disorder are likely to meet food-addiction criteria suggesting similarities with gambling disorder and substance-use disorders If foods are demonstrated to have addictive potential it would be important to identify the specific foods or food components and implement relevant public-health policies and interventions While experts debate which non-substance disorders may constitute addictions people continue to exhibit problematic behaviours more research is needed to better understand the epidemiological genetic and cultural features to help prevent and treat behavioural addictions Research was paramount in compiling the DSM–5 and a similar process should be used in writing the 11th edition (due in 2017) of the World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases funding agencies must prioritize research into non-substance addictions the National Institutes of Health includes departments focusing on drugs and alcohol but none that target behavioural addictions The creation of a national institute on behavioural addictions would help to advance research in this area the government requires addiction treatment centres to provide care for people with behavioural addictions how we classify these behaviours has direct clinical implications and there is an important need to understand how best to prevent behavioural addictions and help people who experience harm related to them Download references Marc Potenza is director of the Center of Excellence in Gambling Research at Yale University in New Haven Reprints and permissions Download citation Anyone you share the following link with will be able to read this content: a shareable link is not currently available for this article Sign up for the Nature Briefing newsletter — what matters in science
