The American company has roots that tie it to Italy
Wanting to recreate the dishes of his homeland
he found there was a lack of proper Italian ingredients
even in a culinary mecca like his new home of New Orleans
First focused on importing canned tomato products
eventually the company grew and began canning their own foods
including the soups that would become synonymous with the Progresso name
While Progresso's early soup offerings focused on Italian classics
today the company produces almost every soup variety you can think of
When I decided to taste and rank Progresso's soups
the selection was so overwhelming that it took me days to narrow it down to a number that a human
could reasonably eat without actually becoming soup
I took a look at some of the top-selling Progresso soups from their Traditional and Vegetable Classics lines and pitted them against one another in a no-holds-barred
It's basically just a bowl of liquid cheese
There are bits of broccoli floating within
but they're chopped quite small and have a soft
but I found the cheese flavor to have an odd aftertaste that made me hesitate to go back in for another spoonful
The texture of the cheese base is rich and smooth with a lovely creamy mouthfeel
which is the best thing this soup has going for it
I wanted it to have a more intensely sharp cheddar flavor
Since cheddar and broccoli are the two major elements of this soup
and I didn't particularly enjoy either of them
there wasn't much in this soup for me to like
Even my second-least favorite Progresso soup is still pretty good, and that honor lies with the chicken & herb dumplings variety. The main elements of this soup are chicken broth and spätzle, a type of dumpling that's one of Germany's best-loved dishes
These dumplings are made with egg and flour have a rustic
short noodle-like shape and a chewy texture
Each part of this soup is fine — there are also diced carrots and celery
The dumplings don't take up much real estate in this soup
and because they're thick and relatively heavy
as it's easy enough to send your spoon on a diving exhibition to pick one up
but this does leave the majority of the soup dumpling-less
and just eating that with the vegetables and chicken pieces is fine
If the base of the soup was thicker and more concentrated
or the dumplings were lighter or more plentiful
When it comes to opinions regarding clam chowder, tempers can run high. As a former Boston resident and current denizen of the San Francisco bay area, creamy New England clam chowder is the clearly superior version in my book. That said, I'm not a Manhattan clam chowder hater — it's not that dissimilar to cioppino, another classic San Francisco dish that stews seafood in a tomato-based broth
Progresso's take on Manhattan clam chowder isn't bad
The broth is described as "rich" but I found it to be fairly light
There are plenty of big chunky potatoes and diced carrots to add texture
The best part of this soup is the clam element — the clams are chopped quite small
but that means you get some bits in every bite
and they add a prominent briny flavor to the broth that gives it a fresh
Part of the Vegetable Classics line, Progresso's creamy mushroom soup is simple. Simplicity is not an inherently bad thing, by any means, but it does make this soup a little bit boring to eat a full serving of. What this soup has going for it is the mushrooms, in both flavor and texture. Portobellos, which are among the most versatile types of mushrooms
chopped unevenly to give the soup some textural interest
and they have a good solid bite to them — they're not overcooked or mushy at all
Each drop of this soup is infused with a strong
The base of the soup itself is on the thin side for a creamy soup
but I did wish it had a touch more viscosity
I also found myself looking for something to add depth
or even a teeny bit more salt to bring out the flavors
Progresso is not reinventing the wheel with their chicken noodle soup
One spoonful of this and I'm taken right back to my childhood
staying home sick from school and watching soap operas on the couch
The broth carries the flavor weight here — the noodles
and chicken are underseasoned and underwhelming on their own
and the chunks of celery are fairly flaccid — but take everything in with a big swig of broth
Compared to the chicken soup with dumplings
despite the fact that they're fairly similar soups
the egg noodles float throughout the golden broth so you don't have to hunt for them
and they have a satisfying silky texture without being too soft
Cutting the carrots into larger coin shapes
adds more texture and keeps them from losing their structural integrity in the liquid
this is a solid version of a classic; just don't expect it to knock your socks off
As a kid who grew up with family in both northern and southern California
I've eaten more than my fair share of split pea soup
there's a golden state institution known as Pea Soup Andersen's
a restaurant and shop that sits right off of the I-5 freeway that beckons people in from their long drives with a charmingly out-of-place windmill and famous split pea soup
I'll spend the rest of my life comparing every bowl of split pea soup I have to those early memories
and while I still have yet to find one that stacks up
and there's a generous amount of chunky vegetables that easily make their way into each spoonful
I enjoyed the combination of textures from the potatoes
The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the soup base itself
I had to double check the can to make sure I wasn't supposed to add water
I might stir in some water or broth to make this soup's texture more appetizing
It's hard to be mad about any combination of dough
Progresso takes a vegetable-packed tomato broth and adds tortellini pasta pockets stuffed with cheese to make a soup that celebrates that classic trio of ingredients
they don't quite add up to a cohesive whole
The tortellini are on the large side and there are plenty of them
and the noodle's folded ridges work well as little reservoirs for the tomato broth
as it's a challenge to eat an entire tortellini in one bite
and asiago cheese filling can scorch your mouth if you aren't careful
The tomato base is flavorful but falls on the sweet side
especially with the selection of vegetables — carrots
and tomatoes all add to the impression of sweetness
and could use another dimension to balance that out
I had high expectations for their Italian-style wedding soup
Known as minestra maritata in its homeland
this style of soup varies in its composition by region
but the Italian-American version typically includes meatballs and bitter greens
Progresso's mini-meatballs are made from turkey and pork and are served swimming in chicken broth with carrots
What I like about this soup is how jam-packed it is with ingredients
You'll be hard-pressed to get a spoonful of plain broth here
and vegetables seem to enthusiastically leap into every bite
The spinach is well chopped so you don't get any long
giving it a unique vegetal and earthy tone
The meatballs are light but quite flavorful
with Romano cheese in addition to the two meats giving them salt and tang
Progresso's beef barley is a soup to keep on hand for a cold day
enhanced by touches of sweetness and umami from tomato paste and chunks of tomato
While generally I preferred soups with at least slightly thicker broths to keep the other ingredients from sinking to the bottom
because the taste was worth a little extra stirring
A generous amount of diced pieces of beef ensure that
you get plenty of meatiness in every spoonful
which add texture and a sweet and vegetal contrast to the beefiness
Barley rounds the soup out with its mellow grainy
The variety of textures and flavors in this soup had me continually diving back in for another spoonful
the broth consists of water and tomato paste
The lentils maintain their texture in the broth
They're also soft enough so that they melt in your mouth
making the simple broth seem richer and creamier than its vegan ingredients indicate
neither of which are dealbreakers because I still found it enjoyable
but which keep it out of the running for the top spot
making their mushy texture noticeable and unappealing
this is a tasty soup and a great option for plant-based eaters
I love classic New England-style clam chowder
because I know how horribly it can go wrong
The combination of cream and seafood in the wrong hands can be downright foul
and loaded with flavorful ingredients in every spoonful
The soup base is creamy without being heavy or gummy
and has a subtle yet pleasantly salty clam taste
and they're chopped in fairly large pieces so you get lots of tender
are cooked well so they add both firm texture and creaminess
this can contains the most calories and sodium
which means it's probably not a good everyday meal
As a special treat when you're craving clam chowder
French onion soup is one of my favorite dishes in the entire world. It's the ultimate combination of sophisticated and comforting. Making it from scratch is quite a challenge, as classic French onion soup needs time and attention to get every element right
Progresso's French onion soup doesn't include the traditional topping of toasted bread and melted Gruyere cheese
and I assumed that without those accoutrements that this version would be boring
I found it to be so wonderfully flavorful that after a few moments I forgot all about the missing toppings
concentrated depth to the beef broth that's addictively savory
and slices of onion that are cooked to the point that they're soft
but still have a subtle touch of crunchy texture
I'm excited to try this soup with some cheesy toast
but it's also so delicious that I'd happily eat a bowl anytime without any accompaniments
I love a rich, comforting creamy tomato soup — preferably with a perfectly cooked, crispy grilled cheese sandwich
but I'll take it either way — and Progresso's version
and as I gazed out the window with my spoon in hand
and just the right amount of cream come together in a velvety
rich liquid that has a bisque-like consistency
The sweet roasted tomato flavor is well concentrated
and there are chunks of tomato to add an extra pop of that flavor
There's some chopped spinach floating around too
not a big part of the soup but does offer a subtle contrast to the intensity of the tomatoes
I will be enjoying this soup with a grilled cheese at the very first opportunity
and I'm sure this is not an authentically prepared gumbo like you'll get in Louisiana
and as hearty and filling as any canned soup you'll find
savory Andouille sausage and chunks of chicken abound
sharing space in the chicken and tomato base with rice and loads of vegetables including green pepper
The varied textures of all of these ingredients make every bite unique and interesting
The soup base itself has a solid level of peppery heat
and the spicy sausage brings that up even further
There's a satisfying thickness to the base
but it's still liquid enough to fall into the soup category
this is the one I'm most excited to have again
Progresso has a massive selection of soup flavors
I eliminated some of their specialty soup lines — rich & hearty
and spice it up — in order to focus on their traditional and vegetable classics selections
Then I checked multiple grocery store inventories to see which options from those lines seemed to be the most widely available and the best sellers
if that information was available for a particular grocer
I then narrowed the selection down further in an attempt to make sure I had a good variety of flavors with different bases and proteins
I tasted each soup individually for my initial impressions
then re-tasted them all to fine-tune the final rankings
Since all of these Progresso soups are the same price
Texture and seasoning were taken into account
as well as how well they all work together
has released a limited-time and somewhat incredulous product today
right in the middle of cold and flu season: Soup Drops
a suckable form of chicken noodle soup (sans chunks) in cough drop format
the company did not somehow decide to speed up the clock and flip the calendar to April Fools' Day
because I'm sitting here with a container of them on my countertop
Progresso sent me a media preview kit which included a package of them
and despite getting freebies for my job now and then
But I couldn't quite get my mind wrapped around this idea of a savory cough drop
and just mildly flavored with chicken noodle soup aromatics
Or would this herald in a new era of salty hard cold relief drops that would change the lozenge game forever
Upon first glance, this packaging is actually genius — it looks like a miniature can of soup
It even has a tabbed pop-top to gain access to the 20 lozenges inside
and the team that worked on this project clearly had a lot of fun
This is like a can of soup you'd present to your teddy bear if you were playing "pretend lunch date." Not that uh
a 43-year-old man would be caught doing something like that
one of my cats came sprinting over because she was convinced it was time to eat wet food
Sub-Zero (sister of Scorpion) — I had to inform her that it was not
It was actually time for daddy to eat solid soup for his job that eventually pays for the wet food
each lozenge was individually wrapped as promised
and for a mere $2.49 (more on how you can buy them in a bit)
I unwrapped a Progresso Soup Drop to take a closer look at it
and also because that's what a human typically does before eating an individually wrapped treat
with a shiny shellacked surface just like a bowling ball
Upon popping the savory lozenge right in my mouth
The Soup Drop had an instant unappealing acridness to it
sort of like artificial bacon flavoring but without the fake smokiness
I held on for a few more seconds and that initial shock and chemical overtone faded a little
giving way to a genuinely salty lozenge that had a distinct chicken bouillon flavor to it
I had to hand it to Progresso — the company didn't hold back on that part
because it did mostly taste like chicken soup with the same infrastructure as a regular hard candy
except the sweetness played a very tiny role in all of this
The main ingredient in these drops is isomalt
which is a type of sugar substitute that's made from sugar alcohol — so it's not actually sugar
That means it's a keto-friendly ingredient
What's interesting is that isomalt's not as sweet as real sugar
but creates the same kind of glassy vehicle that sugar would in hard candy
The drops also contain monosodium glutamate
and all sorts of flavor enhancers I probably don't want to think about
This Soup Drop would be pretty interesting if it just weren't for that awful artificial meat flavoring that tastes like sulfur
Progresso sent along a can of its chicken noodle soup
the soup that the Soup Drops are based off of
Desperate to get the aftertaste of the Soup Drop out of my mouth (which I ate in its entirety)
I thought I'd see how similar the drop's flavor was compared to its inspiration
Progresso's actual soup version is a lot more delicate and doesn't clobber you over the head with its flavor density
The wallop in flavor from the drops makes sense, since they're meant to have a concentrated "soupness" to them, but the drops simply have a much different profile than the soup. And nowhere in the canned soup version is there even a hint of that rough artificial flavoring. If you're not feeling well
It won't necessarily speed up the recovery process
but it'll make you feel like you're doing something nourishing for yourself
The Soup Drops will make you feel like you're deliberately trying to make yourself sick for longer
Progresso's Soup Drops go on sale starting today, January 16, at progressosoupdrops.com
A limited batch will drop each Thursday until the end of the month for $2.49 each plus shipping
I've already gone over the fact that they are
you can bring it to your friends and family and say
want to try a salty drop that's supposed to taste like chicken noodle soup
They're gross." I guarantee people will try them
and they'll probably be gone in an instant

The soup brand turned heads with its Chicken Noodle Soup hard candies—now fans get another shot at tasting the buzzworthy drops

or at least next to cough drops in the cold-and-flu aisle
Progresso is now making soup-flavored hard candies that resemble cough drops
While the first launch sold out almost instantly
The soup maker, which is owned by General Mills, introduced the new product in a press release last week
calling it “Soup you can suck on.” The candy’s first flavor is “Chicken Noodle Soup” that tastes

savory candy Soup Drop for a totally new way to enjoy the taste you love whenever and wherever you want.”
Clearly, soup-flavored candy is the hot new item we didn’t know we needed. On Thursday, Progresso took to Instagram to explain that, in under an hour, it was sold out of Soup Drops. “Well this is souper awkward . . . our Soup Drops sold out before we had the chance to tell you,” the post reads. “But don’t worry, there’s a fresh batch of Soup You Can Suck On coming your way next Thursday!”

Many expressed excitement about trying the next batch of Soup Drops
I love Progresso Soups and would be thrilled to try some soup drops!” one commenter wrote
Others were unsure if the announcement was satire
and some were less thrilled about the introduction of Soup Drop
“If the candy doesn’t get hot like soup should be
i may have to pass lol,” reads another comment
The soup maker seems to have tapped into consumer intrigue, and it’s certainly not the first time brands have leaned into off-beat or even totally weird products and flavors. In 2023, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream and Hidden Valley Ranch joined forces to create a ranch-flavored ice cream. Oreo’s and Sour Patch Kids previously teamed up
In recent years, a number of brands have had success with limited-time offerings, which spurred viral social media reviews. The brand Crumbl Cookies is even known for a rotating menu that changes weekly. And even if the flavors aren’t thoroughly enjoyed—or are thoroughly despised—customers still flock to snag them
The Soup Drops will only be available for a limited time, with batches dropping weekly until the end of January
The final deadline for Fast Company’s Brands That Matter Awards is Friday, May 30, at 11:59 p.m. PT. Apply today.

Chances are, when you think of the most popular canned soup brands
The General Mills-owned brand has been around since the 1920s
It was founded after two New Orleans-based Italian importing companies merged
A quick Google search will show you that Progresso makes many soups, ranging from low-sodium and low-calorie options to ones high in protein
the company has a "Spice It Up" collection dedicated to spicy soups such as Spicy Chicken Tortilla and Spicy Tomato
Another range is labeled "Rich and Hearty" and focuses on heavier soups
I tried out ten of these traditional soups to help you better navigate the brand's long yet overwhelming list of offerings to
starting with my least favorite and counting down to the very best
The look: This one also looked very similar to the other chicken-based soups on this list
There was a ton of rotini pasta in this one
which is great if you plan on eating this soup as a meal
and there were carrot and celery pieces aplenty
the broth was too thick and didn't have an appealing mouthfeel
I Tried 10 Popular Canned Tomato Soups & the Best Was Rich and Tangy
If you don't have time to make homemade chicken noodle soup, Progresso has an option that fits the bill
although it tastes far from anything made from scratch
with a deep roasted chicken flavor but still falls short
I purchased this soup for $4.79 and don't feel strongly either way about it
The look: A semi-clear yellowy broth with oversized pasta pieces and vegetables
It also has oversized chunks of white meat chicken and an overwhelmingly thick texture
savory roasted chicken flavor that wasn't too salty or sweet
but also not al dente; it had an "in-between" texture
The carrots and vegetables were a nice touch and provided a contrast to the meaty chicken and cooked pasta
but it did taste like it could use a little something
but it probably wouldn't be my first choice
You're either a Manhattan-style clam chowder kind of person or a New England-style clam chowder kind of person (or neither, that's fine also). Progresso's take on the tomato-based, Manhattan-style soup is filled with clams
and celery and tastes good alone or enjoyed as a side to sandwiches and salads
I bought this soup for $4.79 but am unsure if I'd drop money on it again
The look: A light tomatoey-red with bits of clams in it
The broth was slightly thinner and looser than the other soups on this list
yet still had a texturally thick mouthfeel
I wrote that the amount of potatoes in this soup was impressive
It packed a brackish taste from the clams and a slight acidic undertone from the broth
It definitely has more umami than a pure vegetable soup
The potatoes were soft but didn't break apart
and the vegetables added some contrast to the chewy clam bits
this is it," my boyfriend mentioned after he took a bite
It's also lighter than the brand's New England-style version
which is excellent if you don't want a dairy-rich broth
I Tried 6 Store-Bought Clam Chowders & the Winner Was Creamy and Clammy in the Best Way
Progresso's Chicken Barley option is a good choice for when you want a chicken-based soup that isn't the usual chicken noodle variation
which I found to be pleasant but not that exciting
orangy broth with medium-sized pieces of barley
It looked hearty and full right off the bat
which I thought was a good sign—some soups skimp on filling
The consistency was so thick I had to scoop the barley from the bottom of the can with a spoon
as it wouldn't budge when I initially poured the soup into the bowl to heat up
The taste: Just alright but kind of boring
The barley was chewy and didn't taste too soft
and the chicken pieces were tender without feeling rubbery or fake
Just the name "New England Clam Chowder" brings up images of East Coast beachside towns and fishing. If you can't take a trip to New England to enjoy a bowl of this flavorful soup, Progresso makes one that brings New England to you. I paid $4.54 for this soup
although not as great as restaurant versions
It contained chunks of potatoes and clams enrobed in its opaque broth
The taste: You'd think that since this broth was much thicker than the other clam chowder option on this list
seafood-y taste and didn't come across as too sodium-packed or overly sweet
the actual potatoes weren't seasoned enough and were kind of just there
The 10 Best Clam Chowder Spots in New England
Progresso has so many chicken soup versions that I can hardly keep count. Here's another option
which I found to be better than the noodle-based ones
The look: A transparent yellow broth with apparent herbs
this soup looked strikingly familiar to the other chicken-focused Progresso soups I tried—it was thick and filled to the brim with ingredients
The taste: Even though a lot is happening here
there still isn't a tremendous amount of flavor
the flavor was a touch too bland for my liking
that the rice was cooked well and didn't have a mushy texture
I would choose this soup over the brand's chicken noodle options
I'm a big fan of Panera Bread's Broccoli Cheddar soup, so every broccoli soup I try, I automatically compare it to the chain's. However, this soup didn't disappoint
Even though it isn't Panera Bread's (and doesn't come with a bread bowl)
Progresso's version is made from a combination of cream cheese and Cheddar
The look: This soup was very glossy and smooth right out of the can
It was a very pale yellow with muted green broccoli chunks
and there were some darker areas along the soup's edge
but it tasted even better after I added a dash of salt
This soup has a pared-down cheesy flavor that I thought would be sharp and zingy but instead was mellow
and the broccoli pieces were extremely soft; they kind of just dissolved in my mouth
This soup was pretty good and quickly grew on me
9 Restaurant Chains That Serve the Best Broccoli Cheddar Soup
While trying out some of Progresso's traditional line, I noticed that the non-chicken soups taste much better than the majority of the chicken soups. For instance, this Beef Barley option had a better
looser texture and a more appetizing taste thanks to its tomato-based broth and tender beef pieces
and I have a lot of good things to say about it
The look: A deep orangy-red broth with a good amount of barley
A few oil pools were noticeable on its surface
and I could tell instantly that this soup was satiating
It was beefy with a slightly acidic tomatoey taste and didn't come across as synthetic or metallic
while the carrots were soft and provided a touch of sweetness
The only thing I didn't fully like about this soup was that the peas tasted borderline mushy and didn't really offer much taste to this dish
This was the first time I tried this soup
Even though it errs on the smokey and spicy side
it still has a delicious kick to it that makes you want to keep eating more
I spent $4.79 on this chicken and sausage dish that packed a punch
The look: A see-through light red broth with flecks of seasoning
This soup was packed with ingredients such as white meat chicken
The broth wasn't thin and watery but instead thicker with a heavy texture
The taste: A deliciously smoky flavor with an overwhelmingly spicy taste that lingered in the back of my throat after I took a spoonful
while the andouille sausage was chewy and hearty
but the smoky and spicy flavors were overpowering and didn't leave much room for the other flavors
I think I would repurchase this one and like how it had an in-your-face flavor
6 Restaurant Chains That Serve the Best Gumbo
You either love or hate split pea soup—but Progresso's version makes it a little bit easier to like it. Made from split peas, root vegetables, and diced ham, this soup is hearty and filling with a cozy
It also has a good amount of fiber in each serving and isn't high in sugar
I spent $4.79 on a soup I thoroughly enjoyed
The look: A thick and chunky green base with diced carrots
This soup became slightly thinner after I heated it up and had an attractive consistency—it was less "gooey" than Progresso's chicken soups
I was actually surprised by how much I enjoyed this split pea soup
It had a mild earthy flavor and wasn't overly salty
the small ham chunks provided a smokiness that complimented this soup well
this soup won first place because it had a great balance of flavor
didn't have an overly thick or "goopy" texture
and was tasty enough to enjoy as a main or serve as a side dish during lunch or dinner
While other soups on this list felt like a chore at some points to go through
my boyfriend and I went through this can so quickly
talking after about how shocked we were that we enjoyed a pea soup that much
I need to remember to add this soup to my grocery list

The limited-edition savory hard candies (“soup you can suck on”) are dropping Thursday morning this week and next online only
Jimmy Fallon was less than eager to try Progresso’s chicken noodle soup-flavored hard candies
or “soup drops,” which General Mills released earlier this month
“I tried it,” “The Tonight Show” host said last week
that seems to be the point of this publicity stunt: attention
General Mills is releasing a run of the soup-flavored lozenges in limited quantities online for just a few Thursday mornings in January
Progresso is relying on a combination of exclusivity and must-try weirdness to put more eyes on the brand and more cans in grocery carts
It seems to be working: The first batch sold out in less than an hour last week
“We took the beloved flavors of our Progresso chicken noodle soup and packed them into a fun
savory candy soup drop for a totally new way to enjoy the taste you love whenever and wherever you want,” MC Comings
business unit director for Progresso at Golden Valley-based General Mills
also come with a regular can of Progresso’s chicken noodle soup
Progresso is a small part of General Mills’ overall portfolio
But it remains a big name in the soup aisle
Competitor Campbell’s takes in nearly half of all retail dollars spent on soup
Campbell’s and Progresso both saw soup sales decline throughout last year and 2023
And where Progresso did see some sales spikes
The brand has struggled to consistently sell more soup year over year
General Mills has warned Progresso is at risk of being worth more on paper than it could fetch when sold
The company last reduced the book value of the brand by $132 million in 2018 “as a result of lower sales projections” through the long term
Progresso was reportedly for sale in 2021 alongside Hamburger Helper, though no deal emerged. (Hamburger Helper sold in 2022 for $610 million.)
It’s possible Progresso is still for sale, but in the meantime the brand is taking advantage of flu season to sell “that feeling of a hug in a bowl” in a hard candy.
“The goal? To remind you of the comfort you can find in a traditional bowl of Progresso,” General Mills said in a statement. “So enjoy soup drops while they’re available for National Soup Month, but grab the real thing whenever you want the warm coziness of a bowl of soup.”

which is why things like Progresso Soup Drops exist
I can’t be angry at Progresso for this because this is the world we live in
The drops are either a soup-flavored lozenge that people can suck on instead of cough drops
I knew it was my fate to experience soup in lozenge form
I wish I could tell you the drops tasted like a cup of homemade chicken noodle soup
But the drops don’t taste like soup or even like chicken
The only flavor I have confidence in naming is “crushed black pepper from a spice rack that was manufactured in 1972.” The other flavors are no creation of God or nature
I sat silently with a soup drop in my mouth for five whole minutes trying to figure out how to explain Progresso Soup Drops, and that’s the best I can offer. I hoped this would be an encapsulated version of a warm cup of chicken broth
it seems Progresso Soup Drops are primarily made of isomalt (a sugar substitute commonly used for hard candy) and salt
You can buy Progresso Soup Drops at progressosoupdrops.com for the rest of January
Each bundle includes 20 individually wrapped soup drops in a mini soup can and a full-size can of Progresso Chicken Noodle Soup for $2.49 plus shipping
that’s not a bad deal—which is probably why the drops are currently sold out

And although there are likely several different canned soup brands to choose from at your local grocery store
The brand offers an incredible selection of different soups
ranging from classic chicken noodle to veggie- and bean-packed offerings
If you've ever felt overwhelmed by the soup aisle
It can be difficult to choose which soup to get when you're looking for a quick and easy meal
we taste-tested several different Progresso flavors in order to provide you with a list of some of the brand's most delicious options
The next time you're looking for an easy lunch or a dinner you can have prepared in less than five minutes
When you're craving soup that feels super hearty and filling
turn to this savory beef barley vegetable soup
It's from the brand's Rich and Hearty line
The best part of this soup is the fact that it doesn't skimp on the beef at all — you'll find generous chunks of it throughout the broth
which feels quite a bit more filling than a rice-based soup
offering an herbaceous quality and some freshness to the dish
The broth is salty and rich in flavor, but it's not super thick — the result is a soup that still feels nice and light and won't weigh you down. Add some cheese on top for a richer twist
or sprinkle in some red chili flakes to give the soup a touch of heat
since it's delicious enough to stand up to basically any canned soup on the market
There's perhaps no dish more comforting than chicken and dumplings
the fact that this chicken and herb dumplings soup contains dumplings instead of regular noodles makes it something special
creating a lovely and approachable textural quality in this canned soup
They're not quite as substantial as the kinds of dumplings you may expect in a home-cooked dish
those herby dumplings aren't the only appealing part of this soup
which creates a nice contrast with the dumplings and makes this soup quite a bit more filling
Is it exactly the same as your Southern grandma's homemade chicken and dumplings
But when you're craving dumplings but don't want to put in any of the work
You know when you open a can of soup and pour it into a pot
only to realize that it's mostly broth and there are barely any solid ingredients at all
and it can be super disappointing when you're actually looking forward to a flavorful and filling meal
But that's definitely not going to happen when you choose Progresso's rigati pasta and meatball
This is a seriously thick and substantial soup for one that comes out of a can
The rigati pasta accounts for the bulk of this soup
Despite the fact that the pasta is slightly too soft for our liking
its small shape still provides a nice textural basis for the soup
and they have a subtle richness to them that keeps things interesting
meaning you can have a meatball in every single bite
The tomato-based broth and veggies make this soup even heartier with a salty
almost umami flavor profile that we just can't get enough of
Okay, hear us out here. We know that split pea soup isn't for everyone
And let's face it: It doesn't look very good when it comes out of the can
this Progresso green split pea soup is definitely the least appealing-looking soup on this list
But just because it doesn't look particularly attractive doesn't mean it tastes bad
this veggie-heavy soup is perfect for those days when you want a soup that feels kind of substantial but isn't too heavy
this soup tastes mostly like green split peas
There's an earthiness and an herbaceous quality there
along with a savory quality that keeps this simple soup from being too boring
Perhaps the most important part of the equation
Although you're not going to get big chunks of bacon in every bite with this soup
there's just enough of it that it provides the recipe with enough richness and flavor that you'll truly enjoy every bite
close your eyes when you're preparing this soup if you don't like the look of it
but don't write it off just because it could look more delicious than it does
That's just what you'll get with Progresso's slow-cooked vegetable beef soup
this soup doesn't necessarily look like anything special
especially compared to the more creative or less common soups on this list
But that simplicity is part of what makes the product so appealing
Like with the savory beef barley vegetable soup
you're going to find big chunks of beef in this soup
there are quite a few more vegetables in the mix
you're not going to get bored after a few bites
beefy broth that's not too thick — this is a soup
feel free to add other seasonings and spices to make for a low-effort dinner that's sure to hit the spot when you just want a bowl of something warm and comforting
There's something so deeply appealing about Italian-style wedding soup, whether you enjoy a homemade rendition or the canned version
The broth in this particular version of the dish is super light and veggie-forward
so it's a nice option if you're not craving anything that'll be too heavy
But just because you have that light broth going on doesn't mean there isn't some heft and heartiness to this soup
That comes in the form of meatballs — and believe us when we say that there are plenty of meatballs here
you'll get one (or more) in every spoonful of soup that you eat
The addition of rigati pasta makes this soup feel a lot more filling
and veggies and carrots lend a healthy and refreshing quality to the soup
This stuff would taste equally as delicious in the winter and summer months
but one thing is for sure: It's at its most delicious with some Parmesan cheese sprinkled on top
You've probably had chicken noodle soup countless times in your life
But what about the times when you're craving a light chicken soup but aren't necessarily craving noodles
That's when you should opt for this savory chicken and wild rice soup from Progresso
This is a nice departure from your standard chicken noodle without being too out there
easily chewable quality after hanging out in the broth for long enough
Not only is the rice filling by making up the bulk of the soup
it also offers a more interesting texture than you'd get from standard rice alone
and celery all give the soup a healthy boost that makes things more colorful in your bowl
Enjoy this canned soup with a side of particularly crusty bread
After soaking that bread in the savory chicken broth for a while
Check out the canned soup aisle at your local grocery store
and chances are that you'll mostly come across canned soups that contain meat
Those that don't are often thin and unimpressive
but it's not usually what we're craving when we want a filling meal
That's why the Vegetable Classics line from Progresso is so appealing
These veggie-forward options nix the meat but don't skimp on heartiness
so whether you don't eat meat at all or are just trying to cut down on your meat consumption
And perhaps the most delicious soup from the Vegetable Classics line is the Tuscan-style white bean soup
This soup is thick and rich from a significant amount of great Northern beans in the mix
creating a creamy consistency that you may not expect from a bean-based dish
Vegetables play an important role as well — carrots and tomatoes help break up all of those legumes
It's just as filling as the more meat-forward options on this list (and also just as delicious)
we couldn't include a list of the best Progresso soups on the market without covering an undeniable classic
It's the chicken and homestyle noodles soup
and it may just be the most iconic soup on this list
There's nothing too crazy or out of the ordinary here — it's just your same old plain chicken noodle soup that you might've grown up with
It all starts with a base of savory chicken broth
which is studded with big chunks of chicken
The noodles are of the utmost importance in this recipe
Unlike some noodles that appear in canned soup
these noodles aren't too soft — they have a surprisingly firm texture that gives them just enough bite to keep things interesting
Celery and carrots are classic veggie additions to this dish that really round out the flavor and keep things feeling nice and light
Whether you're feeling sick or you're just craving a warm bowl of comfort
it's always a good idea to keep some canned chicken noodle soup on hand
and Progresso just happens to boast some of the most delicious canned chicken noodle soup on the market
Think you have to go all the way to Boston just to get a good cup of clam chowder
because you can actually get a delicious batch of the stuff straight out of the can
and it's definitely worth trying if you love rich and creamy soups
some might be hesitant to try a clam-based soup in canned form
but let us be the first to tell you that it really works
You're not going to be biting into huge chunks of clam — rather
approachable pieces that are easy to eat for even the most seafood-averse
the potatoes might be the most delicious part of this recipe
They're somehow both soft and firm at the same time
offering a tender bite in a soup that's otherwise pretty creamy
There aren't any additional vegetables in this canned soup
which would likely detract from the creamy consistency of the broth
really allowing them to soak into the broth before you eat them
Here's another meatless option that we just can't get enough of
and it gives classic tomato soup a much-needed twist that makes things a lot more filling
with a salty quality to it that works well with the addition of plenty of herbs and spices to keep things from being too bland
What sets this soup apart from other tomato soups
Adding pasta to tomato soup may just be the best idea Progresso ever had
You get that same tomato-y flavor you love
but there's some added bulk to this soup because of the pasta
It's still a simple combo — simple enough to serve to a particularly picky child — but the rotini's interesting shape makes for a soup-eating experience that's not quite as sad as those thin tomato soups you may have tried out of a can before
This is another soup that would taste even better with some Parmesan cheese on top
Progresso's lasagna-style soup with Italian sausage is probably the most interesting and least-expected soup on this list
We just haven't seen this kind of canned soup from other brands
which makes it a novelty we just had to try out
but it has a lasagna-like texture with its inclusion of mafalda pasta with rippled edges
The tomato-based soup is richer and creamier than most of the other soups we tried on this list
and the little chunks of tomato in the mix make for a fresh touch to an otherwise indulgent-tasting soup
There are also little pieces of Italian sausage throughout
that enhance this soup's lasagna-ness even more
and deconstructed version of homemade lasagna
Like several other Progresso soups on this list
the Lasagna-style soup with Italian sausage could definitely benefit from a generous sprinkle of Parmesan cheese
so you might want to snag a baguette to pair with it
but there's something about pastina that's hard not to adore
star-shaped pasta is almost more rice-like than pasta-like in texture
but it still has that essential gummy pasta-ness that offers an al dente bite
And that's exactly what sets Progresso's homestyle chicken with vegetables and pastina pasta soup apart from the others on this list
but the pastina gives it a very different textural quality than the other chicken noodle soups that Progresso sells
you'll find all the other basics that make a good chicken noodle soup
all of which play complementary roles to the pastina
and it's an ideal pick-me-up on those days when you're craving a hot bowl of soup but don't have the time or energy to make it from scratch
These canned soups from Progresso were selected based on their flavor and heartiness
so you know you're getting the most bang for your buck with plenty of ingredients
We also tried to select a wide range of different flavors to suit a variety of different tastes
Although these aren't the only good options from the brand
this spread represents a significant portion of what we deem to be the best canned Progresso soups in several of the brand's different collections

Have a cough? You might try a cough drop. Have a cold? Maybe you’ll have some soup
Neither of these things is remotely controversial
But put these two things together and what do you get
And that specific chaos comes in the form of Progresso’s all-new
I don’t know, man. There really aren’t rules anymore, so I guess there’s nothing stopping General Mills from selling these. It’s not like I wouldn’t try them. Once.
Someone really excited for a butterscotch hard candy is in for the worst culinary moment of their life…
Eating a can of soup will be the single more normal, reasonable, logica; thing anyone who buys Soup Drops will do.

As if having a cold wasn't already unpleasant enough
the makers of Progresso brand soups have decided to make it even less appealing
announced the brand which has been associated with nothing but liquid-based soup in a can since 1949 is rolling out a throat lozenge flavored like mom's favorite cure for what commonly ails you
the chicken soup cough drop is now an actual thing
Its progenitors at the research kitchens of Progresso say the drop is just like hard candy but with a savory flavor blending broth
It's not clear just yet if an investigation is underway to determine if the folks at General Mills might have kidnapped the famous Willy Wonka and forced him to invent this rather bizarre creation
but it seems the public's continuing taste for things that might have once seemed absurd is showing no end
From coffee-flavored Doritos and Hello Kitty Spam to mustard Skittles and Velveeta truffles
it seems the American public just can't get enough of these outlandish corporate mashups and repulsive flavor combinations for the sake of novelty...or God forbid
maybe some people are actually enjoying these purposeful mutations of otherwise reasonable eats
It seems to me like the chicken soup-flavored throat lozenge might have actually fared better in the 1950s and 60s
when astronaut culture was grabbing the nation by its throats and forcing down the Space Age allure of freeze-dried ice cream and powdered orange juice
Progresso's soup you can suck sounds more like something that will probably just plain suck
If you're really into swamping your chicken soup in hardened form rather than slurping it from a spoon
Progresso's foray into the wide world of cough drops is now available online...for a limited time only
But I don't think the CEOs at Fisherman's Friend
Halls or Ricola are going to be shaking in their boots just yet
but they might be hacking in a different way if they dare try popping one of these things into their mouths

As if having a cold wasn't already unpleasant enough

Progresso is a reliable soup brand with a plethora of flavors, but some are better than others. To help you figure out the best ones to choose from as you're scouring the soup aisle to stock your cupboard, Daily Meal ranked 14 Progresso soups — and one came out on top: the chicken and sausage gumbo
Our tester ranked the soups based on quality
leaving out the price since all flavors are priced the same
the tester found the chicken and sausage gumbo "overflowing with flavor
and as hearty and filling as any canned soup you'll find."
the tester admits that the Progresso soup may not be the same as a made-from-scratch gumbo you'd get in Louisiana
but it hits the mark in many important ways
Progresso's version contains Andouille sausage
the most common type of sausage used for chicken and sausage gumbo
which commonly shows up in Cajun and Creole cooking and is typically used as a thickener in dishes like gumbo
However, the gumbo does not contain the complete "holy trinity" of Creole and Cajun cooking. For anyone unfamiliar, the "holy trinity" of onion, celery, and green bell pepper serves as the aromatic base for traditional Cajun and Creole dishes (much like mirepoix in French cooking). In other words, the three ingredients are essential for a traditional gumbo
While Progresso's gumbo includes green bell pepper and celery
it's missing onions (although it does contain a small amount of onion powder)
Progresso's chicken and sausage gumbo fares pretty well compared to the traditional version of the dish
Its combination of flavorful ingredients and hearty
filling texture leave the other Progresso flavors in the dust
One of the more well-known brands is Progresso
whose parent company General Mills previously noted was in shaky financial straits
Progresso's broccoli cheese soup is an example of the kind of low-quality product that can drag a brand down
At Daily Meal, we tasted and ranked 14 Progresso canned soups from worst to best
and this one had the (dis)honor of being the worst
The main problem is that the mediocre broccoli doesn't stand out
so the soup is essentially just canned liquid cheese
mushy cuts — not florets — of broccoli disappears into the pale yellow goop
which itself has a strange and unappetizing aftertaste
This stumble is all the more disappointing considering that Progresso's reduced sodium lineup is one of the canned soup brands with the best ingredients, according to experts
the higher sodium content of this soup might help explain why it tastes off
A standard broccoli cheese soup only has two standout ingredients
Progresso may have fallen short on both counts
but it's not the only option at the grocery store
For a better store-bought experience, broccoli cheddar scored well when we ranked nine Panera Bread soups
with a mild but pleasant cheddar flavor and larger pieces of broccoli
As far as store-bought soups like these go
But for some of the best broccoli cheese soup money can buy, head to your kitchen. This broccoli and cheese soup recipe
courtesy of the iconic celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse
high-quality ingredients you can source yourself at a good grocery store — far better than pulverized broccoli and bland cheese
