Prince Mortimer “was an enslaved man in Middletown
from the early 1700s,” said historian John Mills
“He was purchased by an enslaver named Philip Mortimer in Middletown sometime after 1754 and spent most of his life there enslaved — making rope.”
Mills is a software engineer and historian who has dedicated himself to uncovering and preserving stories of enslaved people in Connecticut through his nonprofit Alex Breanne Corporation
Prince Mortimer served as an assistant to officers
even running errands for George Washington
unlike some enslaved people who secured their freedom after the war
accused of attempting to poison his new enslaver
and he spent from the age of 87 until the age of 110 in prison.”
A reimagined painting of Prince Mortimer, by New Jersey artist Kern Bruce is part of a display to celebrate Black History Month at City Hall in Middletown, Connecticut. (Courtesy of John Mills)While history often highlights figures like Frederick Douglass
who escaped bondage and became a celebrated author and statesman
Mills says Mortimer’s experience reflects a different but equally significant reality
“I discovered that most of the enslaved people in my family don’t have that Frederick Douglass story,” Mills said
“Most of them spent most of their lives enduring
is one that resonates with many African-Americans whose ancestors may not have been famous
but whose perseverance ensured the survival of future generations
and he persisted and endured with grace,” Mills said
“I think that aligns more appropriately to many African Americans’ lineage
This 1870s photo shows the walkway leading away from the enslaver's mansion
“It was a walkway that was built by his enslaver
"And it only led to the enslaver’s mansion
And Prince would walk up that walkway every day to get to Main Street to get to the enslaver’s rope-making facility.” (Courtesy of John Mills)The choice of Rapallo Avenue for Mortimer’s honorary renaming was deliberate – even though the thoroughfare was not named as such in Mortimer’s day
“That street used to be a walkway,” Mills explained
And Prince would walk up that walkway every day to get to Main Street to get to the enslaver’s rope-making facility.”
Mills believes having Mortimer’s name placed atop what was once a path of servitude represents a symbolic act of reclamation and acknowledgment
“That idea of making sure that we don’t impose this on young white children
That was imposed on me as a young Black kid,” he said
“That lack of an ability to feel a reverence for people that I am related to
and this is the intent to kind of change the narrative of how we see the enslaved
and give to young Black kids a reason to revere their genealogy
even if they’re not related to a Frederick Douglass or a Martin Luther King.”
Mills sees the honorary renaming of Prince Mortimer Avenue as a step towards that goal — one that recognizes not just one man’s endurance
but the endurance of so many whose names may never be widely known
For Mills, this is just one of many efforts to reclaim and preserve Black history. Through the Alex Breanne Corporation
he has traced the roots of 50 families to date
sharing their histories to ensure that the past is not forgotten

Narrow victory for Don Bosco who, at the end of an exciting match, overcomes Canaletto. Worth noting is the post hit by Conti with an overhead kick in the 38th minute. In the final minutes, Pesare recovers the ball on the sideline, skips past two men and closes on the near post.
Goalscorers: 22',29' Parmigiani (F), 47' Spadoni (V) (pen.)
The victory at Follo is not enough to avoid the playout. At 22' Parmigiani is the quickest to deflect the ball into the net after a confused action in the area. At 29' he doubles after an exchange with Gabrielli. At 47' Spadoni scores a penalty.
Goalscorers: 13' Attanà (S), 18' Heredia (F), 64' Traverso (S), 68' Tomè (S), 84' Amandolesi (S)
An unquestionable victory for Sammargheritese who took off in the second half, sinking Forza e Coraggio.
With this result, Magra Azzurri ensures its permanence in the category.
Goalscorers: 18' Monacizzo (L), 28' Benmoumen (B), 36' Del Vigo (L)
Good performance by Levanto who celebrates salvation. First they take the lead with Monacizzo and then react to the temporary equaliser by Benmoumen with the winning goal by Del Vigo.

Hundreds of yachts have been damaged after a storm caused chaos in Northern Italy yesterday (Tuesday October 30)
high winds and waves up to 10 metres high battered the coastline overnight
causing many yachts to break away from their berths and leaving millions of pounds worth in damage
was badly affected by the storm and saw half of the near-400 yachts in the marina destroyed by the waves
Marina director Marina Scarpino told Italian news agency ANSA
"Ten-metre-high waves struck the rocks for hours and their force broke the storm barrier for 300 metres
we had rebuilt the dam higher by 1.3 metres taking it up to 6.5 metres
But it was not enough with this exceptional event."
Images of half-sunken yachts and wreckages emerged this morning showing the scale of the damage. One video shows 37 metre Custom Line Suegno semi-submerged outside the port's walls.
At least 11 people have died as a result of the storm with thousands more displaced or left without power. Flooding also caused major disruption in the Veneto region, in particular Venice which is currently 70% underwater.

ShareSaveLifestyleTravel11 Ways To Spend A Perfect Weekend On The Italian RivieraByCatherine Sabino
Forbes contributors publish independent expert analyses and insights
Catherine Sabino is an editor and author who writes about travel.Follow AuthorJul 21
08:30am EDTShareSaveThis article is more than 5 years old.Rapallo and its harbor
While Portofino and Cinque Terre are the best-known spots on the Italian Riviera today
Rapallo is a destination that can provide all you want for a perfect weekend (or longer) getaway
As one of Italy’s first modern seaside resorts
a place the beau monde flocked to in the early 20th century
Rapallo's prime location makes it easy to visit most anywhere on the Riviera di Levante
the halcyon strip of coast that runs from Genoa to Portovenere
Here are 11 ways to have a perfect (preferably extended) weekend here
Occasionally the service is available at night
when you’ll be able to see the coast at its glittery best
or send a car to take you to Santa Margherita Ligure for departure there
If you're staying at the Excelsior Palace Hotel
the concierge will arrange boating excursions
See below.) Should you not be traveling by sea
note that train connections are easy and fast—only three minutes to go from Rapallo to Santa Margherita Ligure; nine minutes to Camogli; and between 35 minutes to an hour to Monterosso al Mare (the closest Cinque Terre village)
The fastest trains to Vernazza run between 36 and 56 minutes
3. Pamper yourself in sumptuous style. One of the Riviera’s grand retreats, the Excelsior Palace Hotel will pamper you with its refined blending of modern and old-world luxury
At this property you’ll feel as if you’ve been invited into the (very large) home of a Genovese aristocrat—there are period paintings and decorative objects
along with plush modern bedrooms and bathrooms
Spectacular views from seaside rooms and dining areas are sure to keep you in a permanent swoon
where the Rapallo Conference was held by the Allied nations after Germany’s defeat in the first World War
Prominent names have been coming here for decades—the Duke and Duchess of Windsor
Marilyn Monroe and Ernest Hemingway were all guests; in more recent times
George Clooney and Bruce Springsteen as well
Start your day with the lavish breakfast buffet (with prosecco if you'd like) served in the Lord Byron restaurant overlooking the sea (there's a spacious outdoor terrace too)
In summer the Lord Byron also serves dinner
with a menu offering dishes like an asparagus flan appetizer with zabaione; risotto with roasted lobster and peas; and fresh grilled fish
(The seaside Eden Roc restaurant is the hotel's summer lunch spot; in winter the Lord Byron serves lunch.) You can work off calories at the sleek modern spa and fitness area
which has an indoor pool to use in cool-weather months
The Excelsior offers another special amenity—a private dock at the beach club where you can depart on boating excursions (booked in advance) to such destinations as Portofino
A stay at the hotel can run less than at other five-star properties along the French and Italian Rivieras
where room rates in summer are often well over €1000 a night
This year doubles with sea views and a balcony in peak season range from €770 to €965; the rate for a non-sea-view room
during the second half of August and September is €386
One of the infinity pools overlooking the coast
The Eden Roc Restaurant and part of the beach area
(You can pay a fee to use it if you're not staying at the hotel.) Two striking infinity pools and their lounge areas overlook that gorgeous Riviera coastline and beach terraces on the levels below provide access to the vividly colored sea
You probably won’t want to budge from this spot all day (or ever)
unless you decide to swim to the floats (materassini prendisole) positioned offshore
so it’s good there’s both a snack bar and the chic Eden Roc restaurant close at hand
tennis is available here—there are four clay and two synthetic-grass courts
The club is about two kilometers from the Rapallo train station
Ingredients for making pesto at the Vecchia Rapallo restaurant
6. Learn how to cook Ligurian dishes. At the Vecchia Rapallo, a noted restaurant with a prime location in the historic center
there are classes to help you master the art of making such Ligurian specialties as pesto
and stuffed vegetables the way the pros and locals do
you get to enjoy your culinary efforts at lunch
If you want to savor a range of Ligurian flavors
come back for dinner and try one of the restaurant's tasting menus
there's pear ravioli served with cheese; on the Menù Marinaio the octopus salad with pistachios
is followed by sea-bream ravioli in scampi sauce
Caffé Pasticceria Canepa 1862 has been baking pastries for 157 years
7. Indulge your sweet tooth at one of Italy’s iconic pastry shops. Since the 19th century the Caffé Pasticceria Canepa 1862 has been tempting Riviera residents and visitors with irresistible pastries and cakes
quince jam-filled treats that have been produced here for more than 150 years
There are many other sweets to savor including pandolce
the Easter specialty; solluccheri cookies and sugar-flecked airy brioches
owned today by Giovanni Garbarini and pastry chef Andrea Zino
can ship their delicious products anywhere
8.Explore lesser-known nearby spots like San Michele di Pagana
Relax at this beautiful seaside hamlet between Rapallo and Santa Margarita Ligure
Despite its small size this haven has a major piece of art
for exquisite hand-woven velvets and damasks
stroll the medieval quarter and the various arcades
and if you're in the area the second weekend of the month
check out its well-known antiques and flea market
you'll find a long (4 kilometer) beach
perched high on the promontory and dating from the 1400s
You can also stop by the Castello di Dragonara in Camogli and take in the remarkable sea views from its exterior
There are number of other castles to see as you work your way down the Riviera di Levante coast to Portovenere
11. If you’re doing a three- or four-day weekend, find time to head north to Genoa
where you’ll find palazzi housing masterpieces by Caravaggio
Dürer and Veronese; a large historic center; fascinating shops; and the cool Porto Antico
which was revitalized by the Genoa-born superstar architect Renzo Piano
Meanwhile, the regional FIGC sports judge rejected Vezzano's appeal regarding the measures imposed in relation to the match of the 20th day of the Second Category championship against Rebocco: therefore, the defeat of the match by 3-0 by default for both teams and the fine of 50 euros were confirmed. The match had been suspended by the referee in the 57th minute because the behavior of some members of the two teams on the field had been such as not to allow it to proceed normally.
Committee for the Abolition of Illegitimate Debts
Part 9 of the Series: Centenary of the Russian Revolution and the Repudiation of Debt
The London report presented in the previous chapter was such a deliberate provocation on the part of Western powers that the Soviet delegation immediately got in touch with the German delegation
which Paris and London had somehow prevented from fully attending the Genoa Conference
France and Britain were hoping that they could coax the Soviet Russians into accepting the conditions mentioned above or
to strengthen their position when negotiating with Germany afterwards
It is important to note that Soviet Russia remained fully consistent with the position that the Soviet government had adopted in its peace proposal in the very wake of the revolution: peace without either annexation or compensation
in March 1918 the German Empire had imposed drastic conditions on Russia with the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
as it annexed Russian territories and demanded a heavy war ransom
In June 1919 that treaty had been cancelled by the Treaty of Versailles
in which Western powers amputated the German Republic of large stretches of its territories and demanded heavy compensations
Soviet Russia signed a peace agreement that included mutual waiving of compensation while article 116 of the Treaty of Versailles granted Russia a right to financial compensation from Germany
This step taken by Soviet Russia was also consistent with the treaties it had signed with the Baltic Republics and Poland in 1920-1921
Another provision in the Treaty of Rapallo said that Germany would help to boost trade between the two countries
signed on the suggestion of the Soviet delegation
was a strong response to the dominant and aggressive behaviour of the Western powers
the Soviet delegation took the time to communicate its official answer to the Western powers in response to the demands they had formulated on 15 April

Just try and not be utterly enchanted by this dynamic Montreal duo’s romantic comedy yacht rock escapades
Nick Lanyon and Kyla Kaplan-Chinard hit that sweet spot of saccharine and songwriting prowess again and again in the four self-containing universes they’ve created on this EP

a city pop ode to the jet set and a request to rewrite the law of attraction
Guaranteed to elicit a few grins along the way

De Rachewiltz heads for a corner study that commands breathtaking views up to rock faces and a piercing blue sky and down past the family vineyard to the valley far below
De Rachewiltz has surrounded herself at Brunnenburg by Pound's possessions
including sculptures and old school books in which he drafted
the historical work seen as one of the 20th century's major poems
De Rachewiltz's devotion to her charismatic father has never flagged, despite being given up for fostering at birth in 1925 to a peasant couple in South Tyrol by Pound and her mother, the US violinist Olga Rudge, who was the poet's mistress. Before her birth, Pound had settled in Italy with his wife after blazing a trail across the London poetry scene
en route to becoming a fixture on Paris's Left Bank
where he helped TS Eliot edit The Waste Land and mentored Ernest Hemingway
De Rachewiltz's early upbringing revolved around bee-keeping and sheep herding
albeit broken up by trips to see her father and his mistress at the home they kept in Venice
"The Tyrolean peasant is still ingrained in me," said De Rachewiltz
who recalls smashing a violin her elegant mother gave her
A tense relationship between Rudge and her dialect-speaking daughter ensued
"I think I was influenced by my foster parents
who probably envied 'the lady in the silk stockings' who would pick me up," she said
With Pound she forged a strong bond as they roamed Venice together
visiting bookshops and taking the vaporetto waterbus out to swim at the Lido
Pound would ask his daughter to translate the poem he had started
when I was back in South Tyrol for safekeeping
Pound made his way from Rome to make sure I was safe," De Rachewiltz recalls
During the visit he finally confessed to her that he had a wife in Rapallo on Italy's Ligurian coast
By that time Pound was a wanted man in the US after endorsing Mussolini's brand of fascism and making a string of radio broadcasts – which were riddled with antisemitic statements – to persuade America to stay out of the war
Arrested in 1945 by American troops and kept in a cage for three weeks
where he showed signs of a mental breakdown
Pound was charged with treason and spent the next 12 years in a mental institute in the US
De Rachewiltz has since fought a lifelong battle to separate Pound the poet from Pound the fascist and antisemite
which is why the emergence of CasaPound – now boasting 5,000 members – is so painful
Pound later told the American poet Allen Ginsberg that his worst mistake in life was his "stupid suburban antisemitic prejudice"
where his daughter had married an Italian Egyptologist of Russian descent
"It cost more to put in windows than to buy the castle," she recalls
Pound moved to the castle to continue work on The Cantos
"who stayed in her room reading Henry James"
But after years in an overheated mental institute
where Olga cared for him until his death in 1972
De Rachewiltz now sees that rivalry with her mother for Pound's affections clouded their relationship
"Anyone who met Pound loved him," she said
I re-read my mother's letters now and see how much she loved me."
stopping for lunches of bread and cheese with a glass of red wine from her vines
"I do not want to meet them," she said
Pound would say they need to go back to kindergarten."

Genoa’s project for the gradual transition to electric public transport goes ahead
Another important step towards green mobility was presented today with the introduction
of two electric buses on line 82 connecting Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino
This test is part of the project assigned by the Metropolitan City to AMT to study the electrification of the Rapallo – Portofino bus line
which will be carried out over the next two months
will make it possible to define the technical and functional characteristics of the vehicles and infrastructure in order to quantify and plan the necessary investments
The two electric buses in service on route 82 are Rampini 8-metre e-buses with a total of 46 seats
air conditioning and video surveillance cameras on board
In order to organize the e-bus service on line 82
it was necessary to carry out complex work at the AMT depot in Rapallo
The work carried out was preparatory to the creation of the charging infrastructure to power the e-buses; in particular

The plan to showcase Rapallo through the philological restoration of the colours and decorations on the façades of the historic city centre’s architecture is called Progetto Colore
carried out in collaboration with the paint manufacturer Boero
is based on an in-depth study of the original colours and materials
A study was carried out of each building’s state of deterioration and samples of the plaster were taken in order to identify the best materials to use and the ranges of colours tied to the local tradition
palettes that embrace the hues of the local earth
The buildings subject to intervention were built between the 19th and 20th centuries and bear witness to the long-standing tourism vocation of the city
perched on a hill overlooking the Gulf of Tigullio
A works sheet has been prepared for each building
which will focus on restoring the decorations and colours and will include a plan for constant regular maintenance
Progetto Colore is just one of the works planned for the near future in Rapallo
there are plans for other urban projects designed by Michele De Lucchi-AMDL Circle: above all
