Zaha Hadid Architects has started the construction process of the Center of Mediterranean Culture in Reggio Calabria Giuseppe Falcomatà and Zaha Hadid Architects’ director Filippo Innocenti have laid the foundation stone of the new Centre of Mediterranean Culture marking the start of the project’s construction Strategically located on the Strait of Messina in southern Italy Reggio Calabria has been a gateway between the eastern and western Mediterranean for thousands of years The city also serves as the gateway between Italian mainland the island of Sicily Being at the centre of trade routes and marine ecosystems of exceptional biodiversity has placed Reggio Calabria at the heart of the Mediterranean’s history—and places the region at the heart of its future Maritime civilizations from across the Mediterranean have influenced Calabria’s rich local culture and traditions The new Centre of Mediterranean Culture will complement Reggio Calabria’s existing archaeological and art museums by exploring the profound relationship between Calabria and the Mediterranean Sea that has defined the region’s past and will continue to shape its future Incorporating the essential upgrading of the city’s coastline which has experienced environmental degradation and erosion over several decades the Reggium Waterfront redevelopment significantly enhances accessibility to this prominent section of Reggio Calabria’s shoreline creating a new coastal urban park with extended promenade that encompasses the city’s most iconic views of the Straight of Messina and the island of Sicily Reconnecting Reggio Calabria’s working port to be an integral element of the city’s public realm the Centre of Mediterranean Culture has been designed within the waterfront redevelopment as a primary civic and cultural gathering space for the city—hosting events as well as showcasing the history and relationship between humankind and the sea within a Calabrian context m Centre of Mediterranean Culture incorporates a series of permanent and temporary exhibition galleries essential new multifunctional conference facilities for the city with an auditorium for performances as well as new educational spaces to be used by the region’s schools The centre also includes supporting leisure amenities for visitors that include a bookshop and restaurant & bar overlooking the port The centre’s four wings of facilities lead from a double-height atrium that serves as the entrance from the city Advanced computer simulation modelling has determined the building’s composition which alternates architectural volumes between public courtyards that will be sheltered from the sunlight of one of Europe’s southernmost cities and the strong prevailing winds from the north that are funnelled through the straight in summer each sheltered courtyard overlooks the port to the east or leads to the west-facing terrace with its panoramic views of the straight and Sicily beyond the centre’s interiors are informed by the Mediterranean and the rich marine environment of the straight With its wealth of colours and organic forms marine life serves as the source of inspiration for the auditorium’s interiors where coral hues evoke the vitality of the straight’s ecosystem The fluidity and purity of water is echoed in the aquarium’s interior spaces creating an immersive experience inhabited by the marine fauna within the aquarium The sense of discovery embodied within the Mediterranean’s long history of navigators is expressed in the galleries’ use of light and shadow inviting visitors to explore the new possibilities presented by each exhibition The centre’s sustainability strategies are informed by local climate conditions The straight’s strong prevailing winds have been carefully analysed to guide architectural composition and mitigation strategies that will optimise visitor comfort and natural ventilation during Reggio Calabria’s summer months A key aspect of the building’s passive design is its façade which is 90% opaque with generous overhangs to significantly reduce direct solar heat gain from all directions—including reflections from the sea—to lower internal thermal loads marine grade anodized aluminium panels reflect the renowned natural light of the Mediterranean while also decreasing cooling demand to support long-term energy savings The panels’ lighter weight and local supply chain reduces transportation and installation energy consumption while its durability in marine environments recyclability and ease of fabrication will minimize maintenance and material waste—all contributing to a lower environmental footprint throughout the centre’s life cycle Complementing these architectural measures is the creation of a Mediterranean maquis landscape that includes sixty varieties of native plants Their adaptation to Calabria’s local climate minimises water usage while enhancing biodiversity Rainwater captured on-site contributes to both landscape irrigation and building requirements these strategies—responsive building orientation and native planting—reflect the centre’s commitment to sustainability You must be logged in to Admire the view of the town and the Strait of Messina from the other side of the Aragonese Castle and its rooms set up as a museum The building we see today in the square of the same name is what remains after the terrible earthquakes that damaged it (in particular that of 1908) Although known as the ‘’Aragonese Castle‘’ it has much more ancient origins: the hill on which it stands was a strategic lookout point from ancient times (8th century B.C.) and maintained its role as a military fortress even in the Hellenistic and Roman periods The documented existence of an actual castle dates back to the year 536 The square building has four corner towers. Restorations in modern times were aimed at adapting the structure to the evolution of siege machines and gunpowder artillery, especially against the Turkish invasions The structure remained virtually unchanged until the Risorgimento when it was decided to convert it into a barracks and political prison the Castle of Reggio Calabria preserves the two Aragonese towers in the centre of the current square and is home to permanent and temporary exhibitions Another thing to do in Reggio Calabria with the rain is to visit the Duomo An identifying symbol of the people of Reggio the Cathedral is a sumptuous and imposing church characterised by an Eclectic-Liberty style façade (the style chosen to rebuild the city post-earthquake) in which medieval Romanesque and Gothic art merge; tripartite and with four octagonal towers surmounted by crosses with a triforium and rose window in the central part flanked by statues of St Paul (the saint who converted the people of Reggio to Christianity) and St Stephen of Nicaea is a treasure trove of works of art: bundled columns naves covered by wooden trusses decorated with 200 swastikas (symbolising the light of Christ's Advent) three polygonal apses housing eight chapels embellished with valuable works of art At the end of the right aisle is the truncated column that belongs to the Prodigy of St Paul; in the central apse stands the high altar decorated with a bronze bas-relief by Antonio Berti.  if you are wondering what to do in Reggio Calabria when it is raining there is nothing better than spending the afternoon at the ‘’Pythagoras‘’ Metropolitan Planetarium the ideal place to contemplate the celestial vault even on bad weather days A visit to the Reggio Calabria planetarium is an immersive experience allowing you to get to know one of the landmarks of Calabrian astronomy for decades Spending an afternoon at the planetarium means discovering the fascination of astronomy while comfortably seated in an armchair exhibitions and educational activities for adults and children https://calabriastraordinaria.it/en/news/what-to-do-in-reggio-calabria-when-it-rains You might be interested inArt and CultureA tour of Calabria's archaeological parks2025-04-30 10:23:16 Last update: Jan 29, 2025 1:41 PMContent owned by the Calabria Region | Tourism and Commerce Department issued under CC-BY License among the most beautiful city streetsLiving slow The days for shopping and sales in Calabria can be transformed into an opportunity to visit the historic centres of Calabria's main cities A stroll along the avenues of the festively decorated cities makes shopping and the Calabrian sales rush a pleasant experience alternating a stop in front of the shop windows with a taste of a Calabrian Christmas dessert or a visit to the museums in the centre is a riot of shops and elegant shop windows immersed in the authentic atmosphere of sales in Calabria large international chains and historic bakeries it is possible to visit the Cathedral and the Aragonese Castle the "Cilea" Theatre with its adjoining Municipal Art Gallery and the National Archaeological Museum housing the Riace Bronze Statues all located along the splendid promenade parallel to the Via Marina If you start from Cosenza the main street for shopping is certainly Corso Mazzini Corso Mazzini offers a great variety of shops: from big international brands to tailor-made boutiques Here, the sales rush in Calabria turns into a walk through art. Visualizza questo post su Instagram Un post condiviso da Igers® Reggio Calabria (@igers.reggiocalabria) The most cherished event for the people of Reggio Calabria is the Feast of Madonna della Consolazione, traditionally celebrated on the second Saturday of September. The festivities span four consecutive days and are a joyous occasion of great community participation. Sacred and secular rites, religious and culinary traditions, devotees in procession, and music in the streets—these days bring tremendous excitement and attract not only faithful from the entire region and nearby Sicily but also curious visitors eager to experience the energetic atmosphere of the city firsthand. The procession of the Vara from the Basilica dell’Eremo to the Duomo represents the climax of the sacred celebrations. A colossal, shoulder-borne structure, five meters high and weighing 1,200 kilograms, is used to transport the 16th-century painting of la Madonna della Consolazione. Collateral events consist in a colourful array of stalls, performances, concerts, and spicy street food. The must-try specialty: a sandwich with sausage, onions, and peppers. The unmissable event: the midnight fireworks display over the sea. Calabria's culinary heritage is a time-honoured tradition, generous and rich, drawing heavily from humble origins and sharing much in common—dishes, flavour notes, ingredients—with its neighbour, Sicily. Expect a cuisine that embraces change and isn't afraid to break free from tradition. Visionary chefs and top-notch organic production have made Calabrian cuisine one of the country's finest, both in terms of quality and innovation. Be prepared to eat well and abundantly while in Reggio Calabria. Brace yourself for a good deal of fried delights and start building your tolerance for spicy food before you even set foot in the region. Arancini, calzoni, and pitte tempt irresistibly from the windows of friggitorie and bakeries. Give in to the temptation, but don't forget that a genuine appreciation of local flavours requires a proper sit-down meal. Dive into the street food, but save some room for the main courses. You must sample some primi piatti, like struncatura, a long pasta made from milling leftovers, prepared with olives, anchovies, breadcrumbs, and chilli. Traditional pasta shapes, like maccheroni al ferretto, typically come with hearty, flavorful sauces made with pork, wild boar, or goat. In Mammola, a small village in Reggio Calabria province, the drying codfish tradition spans centuries. Stocco is a symbol of local cuisine, an indispensable ingredient in many recipes from appetizers to sauces. Taste it at the Stocco Festival in Mammola, held annually in August. A curiosity to sip: gazzosa al caffè, a fresh soft drink very popular in town. Department issued under CC-BY License LBV Magazine English Edition An investigative program carried out by the Superintendence of Archaeology and Landscape for the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria and the province of Vibo Valentia in collaboration with the Aspromonte National Park has enabled the rediscovery of a wall structure that spans nearly 3 kilometers through the forests of Dossone della Melia datable with certainty to the late Republican period makes it plausible to identify the structure with the wall built by Consul Marcus Licinius Crassus in 72 B.C to trap the rebels led by Spartacus and to prevent them from accessing any supplies the Romans dug a fortification across the isthmus from sea to sea flanked by a wall of admirable height and solidity Defeated twice by Crassus and after unsuccessfully attempting to cross the Strait of Messina and bring the revolt to Sicily Spartacus and his army were forced to take refuge in the Calabrian mountains where they were again defeated and where the Thracian gladiator met his death in battle The research activities conducted at the site have already led to the discovery of numerous metallic objects dating between the 2nd and 1st centuries B.C. a particular type of javelin used by the Roman army in close combat a pommel possibly belonging to a sword and a handle of a cutting weapon have been found Research will continue: what is currently a working hypothesis may find support after the execution of broader and deeper excavation investigations already planned by the Superintendence in concert with the central bodies of the Ministry The findings and corresponding research that the central and peripheral structures of the Ministry of Culture are carrying out in Calabria demonstrate once again how much there is to discover and how vast our cultural heritage is A unique site of art and historical sediments in the world that spans millennia and can represent an opportunity for cultural growth and awareness of our history and identity but also for economic and social development the Ministry will continue in this action of research and enhancement of what has been discovered Only in a few cases does archaeological research manage to provide elements that allow the immediate identification of the findings with specific sites or even monuments mentioned by ancient sources it constitutes an opportunity for new knowledge allows for updates and new interpretations and different interpretations of already known contexts This is the case with the powerful wall structure located near Cancelo Pass within the territory of the municipality of Ciminà (RC) already known for some time by hikers traversing the Aspromonte trails which can now be proposed for identification with the barrier wall “from sea to sea,” from the Ionian to the Tyrrhenian built by Marcus Licinius Crassus in 72 B.C to prevent Spartacus from obtaining the supplies necessary to survive the harsh winter on the Calabrian We reach Borgo Croce (or simply Croce) following the signs for Fiumara the municipal territory of which this small hamlet is part populated by only 45 inhabitants (including 2 children) and the guide who was the first to take the initiative of bringing this area back to life through an artistic project: the murals of Borgo Croce a village near Borgo Croce that has paid homage to the writer Saverio Strati The Borgo Croce case began as a "summer game" and then continued and confirmed itself as a year-round attraction How do you turn a semi-populated village into a popular street art museum Simply put brushes and colours in the hands of simple citizens who wish to tell something about themselves and their territory create a "symbolic signpost" showing the places where the emigrants live embellish the views and paint the facades of old houses with proverbs interacting with those who have stayed behind and discovering all the gems of Borgo Croce on their own: murals the ever-present ‘’Kiss Alley‘’ with its swing the staircase-sitting room (furnished with sofas cushions and armchairs) leading up to the church and everything else needed to make an abandoned village "instagrammable" The second life of the Borgo Croce community therefore passes through active citizenship which in "muralism 2.0" has found the resources to keep its history and places of origin alive Borgo Croce, Reggio Calabria and the neighbouring villages are part of a small itinerary to be discovered on an out-of-town trip or an entire weekend Let's start with a walk through the centre of Fiumara The late singer-songwriter Mino Reitano was originally from the hamlet of San Pietro to whom the "Mino Reitano" Museum and the square near his birthplace are dedicated Following the course of the Fiumara di Catona (from which the town takes its name) on both banks one can admire the remains of the ancient mills and wash-houses that fed the agro-pastoral economy of this area We are at the foot of the Aspromonte massif, so a nice nature excursion through the woods of the Aspromonte National Park is the right "art-nature" combination.  one can easily reach the rocky site of the Tremusa Caves an extremely suggestive place where the hand of nature has much to teach man: A geological testimony of millions of years ago these mysterious caves are linked to the legend of the "Three Muses" (as the name suggests) perhaps referable to the partica of ancient pagan cults The Tremusa Caves are geologically active and within them one can observe the phenomenon of water drops that cause stalactites and stalagmites to grow making them resemble the spires of a Gothic cathedral https://calabriastraordinaria.it/en/news/a-day-among-the-colours-of-borgo-croce Content owned by the Calabria Region | Tourism and Commerce Department issued under CC-BY License https://www.teatro.it/spettacoli/gabriele-cirilli-cirilli-family With his new show Cirilli & Family, Gabriele Cirilli invites the audience to reflect lightly and ironically on what it really means to be a family, transforming each group into a team united by a common purpose.
