New Orleans Pelicans forward Nicolò Melli who grew up in Reggio Emilia a decade after Bryant left -- two NBA players from a town with a population under 200,000 -- will be a featured guest "The fact that we had the same gym teacher because we went to the same middle school The fact that we started our youth path in the same gym These are aspects that always make me smile," Melli said in a statement "They make me in some way even a little more proud of how my career started." first got to know him in the late 1980s and they played on Reggio's youth basketball team together before Bryant and his family moved back to the United States in the early 1990s 90% of our time was basketball oriented," Ward told ESPN in an interview this week it either was playing in the backyard or the gym or playing the Nintendo basketball games or watching every day tapes -- VHS Michael Jordan's 'Come Fly With Me,' that tape was like 24/7 on the TV It was all about basketball in any kind of expression." Despite the burgeoning basketball obsession Bryant used to claim that when he went back to Philadelphia and played in the Sonny Hill Future League as a 12-year-old "I could believe that because there was a time when he left Italy and he came to America the first couple of years were hard for him because everything was so different there," Ward said when asked about Bryant's memory "He almost couldn't speak slang and be the real American cool guy you need to have that [city] approach in the States in the '90s." So much so that MC Hammer picked him out of a crowd when Bryant attended a concert of the baggy-pantsed performer in Milan with his mother and sisters "We found out -- Pamela [Bryant] and the girls told us -- that MC Hammer called him on the stage to dance with him," Ward said "I guess they had front-row seats or whatever and he was called on the stage to dance with MC Hammer because he was really The coordination showed up on the basketball court too He knew what he had to do with his body," Ward said So he just had some problems with strength Nearly 30 years after first meeting Bryant Ward was reunited with the grown-up NBA star in the Lakers' home locker room when we were kids and dreaming of being there [in the NBA] Bryant welcomed a bit of Italy back into his life Now Bryant's old Italian stomping grounds will welcome his spirit forever more "I know that it was just six or seven years that Kobe lived in Italy very important for what Kobe became," Ward said I think was very important for him in a sense of culture and approach to things This was a sensibility that Kobe had that many others do not have." Shouldn't the architecture of educational institutions foster and support exploration and curiosity Does that not make buildings of erudition effective helping younglings to cultivate personalities of understanding and empathy Foregoing homogenisation and unified standards, the didactic design of the Reggio School in Madrid, Spain by the Office for Political Innovation (OFFPOLINN) bases itself on the idea that 'architectural environments can arouse in children a desire for exploration and inquiry.' The school and pale-yellow blocks interrupted by triangular glass panes and googly-eyed polycarbonate windows eschews conventional aesthetic congruence and is designed on the principles of the 'Reggio Emilia Approach,' an educational model developed by Italian educator Loris Malaguzzi that pursues to empower children compared to other traditional learning environments According to Andrés Jaque, the studio’s founder and principal architect, an author, and the current Dean and Professor of Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, the design, construction, and function of the offbeat and rather naked school "is meant to exceed the paradigm of sustainability to engage with ecology as an approach where environmental impact collective governance and pedagogies intersect through architecture.” The playfully irreverent architectural approach of the Reggio School carries the objective to become a 'multiverse' where the layered complexity of the environment becomes readable and experiential, as a priority, where its diverse stacking becomes an environment for self-education, with the age of pupils increasing as one moves up the educational building Articulated in a basic materiality of lightweight cork the erudite institution operates as a bricolage of myriad ecosystems where classrooms and learning spaces reverently intermingle with indoor gardens and sun-drenched squares as a ‘vertical city.’ Classrooms for older students are organised around this inner garden "This distribution of uses implies an ongoing maturity process that is translated into the growing capacity of students to explore the school ecosystem on their own and with their peers,” Jaque explains Formalised as a substantial void opening itself via landscape-scale arches to the surrounding ecosystems, the second floor of the Spanish architecture is conceived as the school's main social plaza, the heart of the school's design the building and its programme encourage teachers and students to participate in school governance and interact with their context the architecture was meant to prompt the imagination inspiring students to ask questions about the world with the school’s physical environment essaying the role of the 'third teacher,' after teachers and the kids' parents This 464 sqm central space is over eight metres high and is conceived as a “cosmopolitical agora; a semi-enclosed space crisscrossed by the air tempered by the holm oak trees from the neighbouring countryside A network of ecologists and edaphologists designed small gardens specifically made to host and nurture communities of insects mundane activities like exercising coexist with discussions about how the school is run as a community and what is the way to relate to the neighbouring streams and fields this floor operates as a more-than-human summiting chamber where students and teachers can sense and attune to the ecosystems who has also been a visiting professor at Princeton University and the Cooper Union The Reggio School also incorporates low-budget strategies to reduce its environmental footprint, foregoing high-tech sustainable solutions. To begin with, the building’s compact verticality helps reduce land occupation, instead of opting for a more horizontally expanded construction which would take up substantially more area, as is the case with most examples of school architecture the world over It also optimises the overall need for foundations and radically reduces its facade rate by simply replacing a big portion of the construction with simpler strategies thermal insulation or mechanical systems distribution “The result presents a naked building where the non-edited visibility of its operating components defines its aesthetics,” explains the design team Eighty per cent of the building’s external envelope is dressed in 14.2 cm of projected 9,700 Kg/m3 dense cork essaying purposes of isolation and support specifically developed by the Office for Political Innovation for this project is used both in vertical and pitch parts of the building’s external volume to provide a thermal isolation of R-23.52 double that of what Madrid’s regulations require This adds to the passive 50 per cent reduction of consumed energy when heating the school’s interiors,” they elaborate The irregular surface of the projected cork is also designed to permit organic material to accumulate the building’s skin will become host to various forms of microbiological fungi As rainwater is designed to run down the facades it will nourish the lifeforms inhabiting the cork surfaces Led by researcher and structural engineer Iago González Quelle analysed and dimensioned the building’s structure in a way that the thickness of the loading walls could be reduced by an average of more than 150 mm compared to conventional reinforced concrete structures an implied 33 per cent reduction in the embedded energy of the building’s structure was achieved while the impressive series of structural arches reduced the need for steel reinforcement accumulated design and visual language of the school garnered by many architectural traditions allow children to acknowledge and gain first-hand experience of being part of larger ecosystems and societies as an ongoing experiment of human-centric spaces The Reggio School is a sturdy example of the building’s users gaining education and life lessons dabbling with collective self-experimentation and unabashed exploration and co-existing with the structure and its natural context in expanded capacities this educational institution encourages social harmony and makes visible efforts to develop pupils’ personal capacities and identities preparing them to take the agency to confidently cull out their place in the larger society In more than half a decade of dedicated writing and research fueled by her education and experience in architecture ideating as well as aligning and editing content for STIR’s design and architecture verticals She also edits and oversees the day-to-day editorial operations for its launch platform Her keen interest in what demands design and creative plurality at large drives her professional pursuits She often tunes into a variety of media centred especially on maligned women true crime and what we get wrong about history From vernacular knowledge to modern sustainability Middle Eastern pavilions serve as living archives of architectural thought offering fresh frameworks for global adoption STIR engages with the curators of the Togo Oman and Qatar pavilions—debuting at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2025—on representation the book presents a fictional story depicting algorithms exercising control over humans and how this affects the built environment Tipnis shares how the toolbox democratises the practice of restoration via DIY resources to repair tangible urban heritage made of common building materials Exclusive preview for subscribers. Reggio Emilia you wouldn’t ever think that the oldest hotel in Italy could be here was originally a 13th century building known as the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo but it has been a hotel for over 500 years and owned and run by the Sidoli `Terrachini family for the past century The only time it has closed in its 500-year history as a hotel was twice during Covid lockdowns Originally the Palazzo was the most important administrative building of the town and parts of the hotel now retain the frescoes rafters and ancient hand-made windows from the 13th and 14th centuries including an impressive baronial hall used for weddings have all modern conveniences while still retaining the character charm and antique furniture of a bygone age is an enthusiast who enjoys talking about his wonderful property We spent an entertaining hour in the hotel’s quirky bar with the quasi rococo fittings from the Pasticceria Nazzani and which was owned by his great-grandfather together with another strange machine perhaps for some kind of lotto The Este family relinquished the original building in 1516 when it became a hostelry known as the ‘Tavern of the Hat’ and stables and shops were added to the ground floor Among the many documents which give glimpses into the early life of the hotel is a 1684 decree to control disorder by punishing drunkenness and prostitution or staying without a pass Offenders were fined 25 gold coins and three lashes in public I don’t know whether that law is still in force The Posta has flourished over its 500 plus years currently with around 65 percent Italian guests and many foreign tourists now coming for the whole package which includes trips into the country to visit the family’s farmhouse where they make balsamic vinegar and serve meals using their own produce Reggio Emilia is also the world center for the Malagussi Education Method Ten thousand visitors a year arrive to study this approach for teaching young children Signor Sidoli is optimistic about the hotel’s future (in August) the hotel was almost full again after fewer bookings following Covid He talks about changes needed to attract more tourists like abolishing the traditional half day closing (Thursdays) which is an anachronism in the days of mass travel They’re adapting to many more last-minute bookings The sleepy little town needs to publicise its assets like the fabulous Antica Salumerio Pancaldi an atmospheric delicatessen which also serves local specialities at lunchtime The Municipal Museum may not sound very exciting but it is a quirky delight with its 18th century natural history collection and stuffed lions attack stuffed zebras round every corner but approachable – shown by bald patches of fur where countless children have dared to stroke them A huge bear menaces as you round the corner pointing down the hall to displays of thousands of animals birds and insects.            Reggio Emilia was the birthplace of the Italian flag in 1797 and there’s a small museum to commemorate it in the town hall There’s another extraordinary museum in Reggio which I didn’t get to see this time Housed in a former lunatic asylum is the Museum of Psychiatry there’s a reason why the oldest hotel in Italy is here in Reggio the Roman road which crosses the north of Italy and runs right through the middle of the town Going for a stroll after breakfast in the hotel’s elegant art nouveau dining room I turned the corner from the Hotel Posta and found myself on this very road Even more amazing was what I encountered next A little way along the street I saw a curious assemblage of vans A trendy young woman with a clipboard warned me that I could go no further “Perche non?” I protested that the footpath was a public right of way She informed me that they were making a film about the life of Enzo Ferrari on this very street and that one apartment had been chosen because his original address in Modena wasn’t suitable and this looked exactly the same.  “that the film stars Penelope Cruz and Adam Driver and is directed by Michael Mann Javier Bardem have just spent their summer holiday here with the whole family.” Well You never know what’s round the corner in Italy The chosen restaurant of the stars is Arte e Mestieri in the delightful courtyard behind the Max Mara shop on the Via Emilia I was disappointed that I didn’t see the film stars try as I might to peer through the windows of Apartment 22 where strong lights from the street were creating artificial daylight in the 19th century building You now have insider knowledge about the location that in 2019 The Puppets House of Otello Sarzi is born in Corte Tegge (about 8 km from the center of Reggio Emilia) and can be visited by reservation The WWF Marmirolo Oasis is located about 5,6 miles from the center of Reggio Emilia and is a protected area in which a very large number of birds nest and reproduce The oasis is open every weekend and holidays from March to June and from September to November and the visit lasts about an hour along a ring path around the two ponds with stops inside the three huts for sighting The luckiest ones will be able to observe live through binoculars and telescopes (available to visitors and school groups) numerous species also suitable for those with motor disabilities At dawn in Emilia there’s a small but important magic that is repeated every morning: in the dairies the milk turns into Parmigiano Reggiano which begins its maturation process to become the “King of Cheeses” The entire production process is very fascinating for all ages but for the little ones it can be a perfect moment not only of learning about the local agricultural tradition but also for their education towards food culture in general For more info, visit the sculpture which is further highlighted in their spatial layout A large painting is set apart from the wall but grazes the ceiling held up by two vertical metal components: it acts as a backdrop for the “unfinished” figures of the sculptural elements of the exhibition One sculptureis hung from the ceiling on cables floating in space as if to deny its specific weight and the form seems intended to suggest the remains – or the preambles – of a body tendon-like filaments evoking bundles of nerves Another sculpture rises up from the ground in high relief enclosing a figure caught within a grid from which it struggles to break free of graffiti etched into a structure intentionally made to resemble a piece of rubble or a ruin hinting at a surface whose form may be linked to some past use a material that the artist began experimenting with in 2014: harder than plaster making it well-suited to the concept of transformation that underlies David’s works The mise-en-scène for the Collezione Maramotti exhibition has no explicit narrative but the way in which the objects exist in relation to each other – and interact with space – yields a context that can be narrated to the viewer the impermanence of the image is a state of transition between disappearance and reappearance Corporeality is always present in his work even when it seems to be denied any well-defined form are transformed and multiplied; they are paradigms of fall and rebirth His practice is guided by a constant reflection on the lack of unity sometimes employing traditional artisanal techniques as a point of departure for the creation of works and as a work unto itself The same variety found in his choice of media also applies to the subjects of his works which come from many different sources and express a wide range of complex emotional states folk art and design of the nineteenth century and art history (from Surrealism to Expressionism Art Deco to the Japanese tradition of figure painting) The artist himself explains why: “My work has never followed a uniform method because I think we are all always struggling to some degree trying to come to terms with our fragmented But I find that editions of the Venice Biennale respectively curated by Francesco Bonami (Dreams and Conflicts) and by Massimiliano Gioni (The Encyclopedic Palace) by /// March 6 Born at the beginning of the ‘80s, Street Art has literally exploded in the streets of many Italian cities at the beginning of the new millennium Beyond the debate on the evolution of the phenomenon from the origins and its hybridization with authorized and legal aspects more and more suburban buildings and walls have been covered with colour and have started bearing different kinds of messages Strolling around the cities of Emilia-Romagna today it is quite easy to bump into street art works that immediately catch our eyes The whole territory features lots of examples – layers of colour that painted walls which were already weathered by time and abandonment Valorization and Repossession of urbam spaces are some of the key concepts at the core of this social phenomenon and is able to blend various visions and perceptions This art form has thus become a tool to re-read urban realities and their surrounding territories – also in Emilia-Romagna – transforming some city spaces in true “open-air” art galleries encouraging many enthusiasts and curious to explore cities through a new point of view Since the great exhibition in 1984 dedicated to street art called “Arte di Frontiera Bologna has always driven a particular attention towards this art form with undefined borders Whether because of popular movements in the city or because of the strong impact of the university graffiti writing and street art have spread like wildfire on the urban landscape more or less spontaneously and many of them – or at least the biggest ones – can be found outside the historical centre Starting from the Navile neighbourhood (Bolognina, Lame, Corticella), we suggest you to stop in via Fioravanti (DAIM), in via Colonna (Eron and DOES) and in via Passarotti (Schuyff) You can then move towards via Yuri Gagarin, to admire works by JOYS, Deco Rabiscando and Rusty or reach the Corticella area and have a look at the Corticella civic centre in via Massimo Gorki (Navile-Gorki 6.16 area) Here, you can find works by very well-known artists, such as Cheko, Solo&Diamond, Bartocci, Guerrilla SPAM, Andrea Casciu and many more Other very interesting areas in Bologna are: Quartiere San Donato particularly via Del Lavoro; Ponte di Stalingrado; via Negrelli; via Henghel Gualdi and the area around the San Vitale railway station We suggest you to move around the city by bike, maybe following the digital map realised by Associazione SenzAncora in collaboration with the Ozono Factory collective biographies and in-depth analysis on artists The small municipality of Molinella, between Bologna and Ferrara, has been hosting a very interesting festival of urban regeneration called ArtU – Festival di Arti Urbane organised by the cultural association Animal Blue House in collaboration with Pro Loco Molinella and the municipal administration but especially many street art works have literally invaded the small municipality and the surrounding centres The case of San Giovanni in Persiceto What you can admire in the small Piazzetta Betlemme is not a real street art action artist and scenographer for many successful films such as “2001: A Space Odissey” “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” and “Mutiny on the Bounty” imagined a homage to cinema right in this place and started to cover the walls of the buildings with beautiful trompe l’oeils murals suspended between reality and imagination This intervention was repeated in 1990 and 1998 Also Imola has started a new process of urban redevelopment of some neighbourhoods in the last few years Thanks to the RestART festival some run-down areas have undergone some interventions aimed at their requalification Many artists have already contributed to the project: Collettivo FX | Awer | Mr. Fijodor | Ale Senso | Etnik | Reve+ | Sea Creative and many others A special mention goes to the work by the Brazilian artist Kobra, who realised an incredible mural dedicated to the dear departed Formula 1 champion Ayrton Senna on the façade of the MAICC the Checco Costa Imola Autodrome Multimedia Museum Thanks to a digital map it is possible to discover all the works scattered around the city and learn more about their names and meanings When the word street art still didn’t exist, the small town of Dozza already hosted a festival dedicated to street art: it was 1960 and its aim was to transform the town into an open-air gallery Today, strolling around its alleys, it is possible to admire almost 90 works realised as part of the Biennial of the painted wall Hundreds of artists have participated over time (Sebastian Matta | Alberto Sughi | Ennio Calabria | Bruno Ceccobelli | Omar Galliani drawing inspiration from their fantasy and embellishing the walls of what is now considered as one of Italy’s most beautiful towns Just 3 kilometres away from Dozza, further down on the Via Emilia, in Toscanella, you can admire other important murals (as the ones by Mac and Tellas) realised in the frame of the latest Biennials when street art still wasn’t called this way the Icone festival in Modena started to cover the grey walls of the city Numerous Italian and international artists were involved in the project and invaded Modena through six editions of the festival suburban areas and the area of the railway station into an open-air gallery the festival took this form of art also to the towns which were seriously for this reason as well his project is grafted in different spaces of the Collection as a living organism would do Nature is recreated and regenerated in the space called Laboratorio dell’artista/Artist’s Laboratory are all items and tools of the trade which become generative elements of a new natural beauty for the artist A series of videos are also conveying Kinteras’ real sounds and work processes taking place in his Prague’s studio.By taking as a model the scientist’s old approaches and his prototypes (scale models and herbariums held in display cases in theworkshop) classified and sown in a wide para-vegetal nervous system finding its place in a second room in the Collection The Systemus Postnaturalis presents an artificial carpet of plants growing through an intricate mesh of copper roots: three islands are joined together through pathways that visitors can experience directly The light fostering its growth is also artificially steered through the space A massive three-meter-high sculpture stands in the main entry hall between the atelier and the artificial forest: Electrons Seeking Spirit made with wire cables composing its load-bearing skeleton ending with an animal head creatures triggering a feeling of collective panic due to this “spiritless system”.Outside in the garden the works Praying Woods are ritually extended towards the sky or bend down towards the ground Their structure is part of the “natural nature”: collected by the artist in the woods of his country they have been dipped and congealed in a silver bath. This proliferation of suggestions within the Collection is accompanied by other works scattered in other locations in the townof Reggio Emilia.Public Jukebox is a sound installation that will be activated for one month in Piazza della Vittoria This is an itinerant sculpture which has travelled to several European locations; every time the sound repertory is updated with the music of the hosting country Thanks to the strongly evocative and socializing features of music interesting and unexpected associations of people and new kinds of relations are generated A few of Kintera’s sculptures have been placed in an old cabinet of the naturalistic section of the Civic Museums/Musei Civici –an old cultural town institution which also houses the prestigious Lazzaro Spallanzani’s wunderkammer– taking the place of the small vegetalmodels present in the artist’s Laboratory: a fruitful exchange an open dialogue focussing on the scientific approach of the collection and its classification. The exhibition is accompanied by an artist’s book and composed of two sections: Herbarium and Cuprum Factum the first one strikes a dialogue with the new creations of synthetic beauty with historical drawings or etchings or pages of herbariums with illustrations of plants many drawn from the naturalistic Collections of the Civic Museums; the second collects texts and images describing the creative process of the works in the studio and those on display in the exhibition.Kintera finds his way through the topic of “post-natural” with vivid visual suggestions which he leads with ironic playful but also bitter spirit within the framework of a complex social and political questioning of our time moved by the hope of raising awareness on an issue of great relevance today The relationship with the “natural Nature” and to give order to the diverse forms of biological life –an anchorage of our cultural tradition– are Kintera’s starting points which are provocatively subverted through the construction of completely artificial scenarios by working and generating new synthetic and waste materials which comprise our everyday para-natural habitat A melancholic provocation inducing the desire to create alternative scenarios where science and technology –protagonists in the building of our physical landscape and our relational system– could move in the on-going search for a “new Humanism” where humans –and not their mere systems of functions– could remain solidly at the centre and move forward without forgetting their identities the collective cultural memory in which their lives and the permanence of real relationships are inscribed ITALY - MAY 22: Alessandro Florenzi celebrates at the end of the Serie A match between US Sassuolo and AC Milan at Mapei Stadium - Citta' del Tricolore on May 22 (Photo by Pier Marco Tacca/AC Milan via Getty Images) Alessandro Florenzi, spoke to the media in the second day of training camp with the Italy national team. The AC Milan full-back who is a loanee from AS Roma has also commented on the words of Paolo Maldini to Gazzetta He is a man of great values and I would also add Massara to him They are the basis of the Scudetto which we won They are very important people who can do well for Milan A Milan without Maldini is a bit like a Roma club without Totti and De Rossi." I found many similarities between the Rossoneri squad and the Italy Euro championship team at Milan they didn't understand me because they hadn't experienced what I experienced but you feel it when there is something and I felt it and said it in the end I was happy to have been right."
