Day one finals of the 2025 Italian Championships are upon us
with a stacked lineup of racing about to unfold from Riccione
This five-day competition represents the primary qualification opportunity for swimmers to add their names to the nation’s roster for this summer’s World Championships in Singapore
The Italian Swimming Federation-mandated selection standard is listed underneath each of the individual events below as the benchmark under which swimmers need to delve to make the grade
Follow along and refresh often to get the blow-by-blow as today’s action gets underway
While this morning’s heats saw the top 10 performers all clear the 26-second barrier in the men’s 50m backstroke
tonight just one swimmer dipped under the 25-second threshold
19-year-old Christian Bacico fired off a new lifetime best en route to grabbing the gold
a time which lowered his previous PB of 25.33 entering this meet
That’s a tremendous time drop for the teen
although a minimum of 24.59 was needed to make the World Championships cut
Daniele Del Signore maintained his runner-up slot from the heats
dropping his morning swim of 25.30 down to 25.21
Bronze was taken by Lorenzo Glessi
rocketing up from his 8th-place position out of this morning’s prelims
Bacico’s time situates him just outside the list of top 5 performers worldwide on the season and he is now Italy’s 6th-swiftest man in history
As a reminder, Olympic champion Thomas Ceccon is not competing at these championships
he’s been granted permission to achieve qualification at the Australian Open National Championships taking place in just over a week
26-year-old Olympian Simona Quadarella accomplished her World Championships-qualifying mission
winning the women’s 800m freestyle by nearly 19 seconds
Quadarella punched a result of 8:24.85 as the far-and-away victor
The next-closest swimmer was Emma Giannelli who touched in 8:33.53 followed closely by Nomi Cesarano who notched 8:33.72 for bronze
Quadarella is the national record in this event
owning a lifetime best of 8:14.55 from last year when she settled for 4th place at the Olympic Games
She took 800m free bronze at the 2020 Olympic Games and followed that up with the same result plus 1500m gold at the 2024 World Championships in Doha
“I’m happy to have gotten the qualification time
it wasn’t a given that I would do the time
I tried to give it my all in the last 100 meters
I feel very good with my new coach and I feel very calm
I’m trying to expect a little less from myself
differently from how I have done in recent years
This year I’m trying to find a little calm.”
The world shook with excitement yesterday as Germany’s Lukas Märtens unexpectedly downed the supersuited World Record in the men’s 400m free at the Swim Open Stockholm
The Italian men’s 4free field took to the water tonight on the heels of that performance, with Marco De Tullio clocking a time of 3:46.90 to top the podium
Although De Tullio has been as quick as 3:44.14 in his career as Italy’s 3rd-swiftest performer in history
his time this evening missed the 3:44.6 QT needed for Singapore
Davide Marchello bumped up from 4th out of the heats to snag silver tonight in 3:49.91 and Matteo Lamberti bagged bronze in 3:50.56
Gabriele Detti
Matteo Ciampi and Luca De Tullio were among the men entered but who wound up not diving in for this morning’s prelims
Detti, Massimiliano Rosolino and Marco De Tullio remain the only Italian swimmers to have ever delved under the 3:44.6 qualification time in the history of Italian swimming
21-year-old Anita Bottazzo just cranked out the swim of her life en route to winning the women’s 100m breaststroke
Bottazzo roared to the wall in a blistering 1:05.82
the fastest of her career and a near-Italian national record
The University of Florida Gator tore off the block with a sizzling 30.61 opener before hanging on to bring it home in 35.21
This morning’s leader, Lisa Angiolini also made the grade for Singapore, albeit by the skin of her teeth, turning in a time of 1:06.01 as the silver medalist. Arianna Castiglioni rounded out the top trio in 1:06.22
Bottazzo’s lifetime best entering this competition rested at the 1:07.17
which garnered her the silver medal at the inaugural U23 Championships
That means tonight’s incredible performance hacked over a second off that outing
to check in as Italy’s #3 female in history
Top 5 Italian Women’s LCM 100 Breaststroke Performers All-Time
Bottazzo now ranks #1 in the world this season
dethroning Great Britain’s Angharad Evans
national record holder Pilato logged a time of 1:07.74 to place 5th out of the heats but opted out of tonight’s final
“The American environment in Florida gives you a great boost
All my teammates wrote to me ahead of this race
My coach told me: now let’s go and do 1:05.”
The men’s 200m fly final was a little on the subdued side with just one swimmer delving under the 1:56 barrier
25-year-old Alberto Razzetti got it done for gold
That was another close call with the Italian Swimming Federation-mandated qualification standard of 1:54.99 needed for Singapore
Razzetti needed to be closer to his best-ever time of 1:54.51 from the semi-finals at last year’s Olympic Games
a result which rendered him Italy’s #2 performer of all time
24-year-old Claudio Faraci was next to the wall in 1:56.27
a new personal best by well over half a second
Alessandro Ragaini bagged the bronze medal in 1:56.53
Surprisingly, Olympic medlaist Federico Burdisso fell from top-seeded to 4th place overall
who has been training in Australia the past several months
said after his Worlds-miss,” I am angry that the time has not come
I have worked well in the last months in Australia and I am sorry for a few tenths.”
The women’s 400m IM final was void of any World Championships qualifiers as no one was able to meet the 4:38.1 time standard
Anna Pirovano punched a result of 4:40.77 to beat the pack, with Claudia Di Passio well back in 4:43.30
24-year-old Pirovano dropped significant time from her top-seeded performance of 4:49.14 out of the heats
her swim here represents a new lifetime best
erasing her former benchmark of 4:42.06 from way back in 2016
25-year-old Leonardo Deplano ripped a big-time outing of 21.62 to reap gold and qualify for this summer’s World Championships in the men’s 50m freestyle
Deplano continued momentum from his morning outing of 21.93
the sole heats swim under the 22-second barrier
His time tonight cleared the World Championships QT of 21.7
His result was also just off his lifetime best of 21.50 from last year’s Olympics
a time which made him the #2 Italian performer in history
Loreenzo Zazzeri hit a time of 22.10 for silver and Andrea Candela also landed on the podium in 22.25
Alessandro Miressi remained in 4th place
Deplano takes over the #1 slot in the season’s world rankings
Deplano said after the race,” This morning I wasn’t in great shape
I’m really happy and I’m continuing this championship more serenely
so you can work and prepare yourself as best as possible.”

Jasmine still posts several times per week via Instagram story
I find it interesting because it’s unlike other athletes

It’s odd because with her amount of talent
you think she would give at least one LCM season a try
she retired from professional swimming apparently

Does the Italian team add swimmers after Champs if they hit A or B-Cuts and finished Top 2

I hope she doesn’t drop the 100 from her schedule going forward
I suspect the news on 50s of stroke have reset her priorities
She didn’t show up at Settecolli last year and has gone under the radar since
No official announcement but she didn’t really pursue LCM post-UVA

Romagna is the land of abundance: lots of food
and it is simplicity that makes the difference
even though you should start thinking of it as an asset
Any beach bar will serve you a decent piadina
any restaurant will serve you the best squids au gratin
any cocktail bar will make you enjoy a good drink
from the stall selling junk to the gourmet restaurant
it is difficult to compete with such high standards
Indaco: the restaurant and cocktail bar a stone's throw from the iconic Viale Ceccarini
Although it is in such a "central" location
Indaco is a peaceful place that steps back from what is the assiduous Riccione nightlife which
can get tiring for a certain type of audience
It is located in the space that used to house the laundry room of Riccione's historic Grand Hotel until a few years ago
and already from the spaces one can sense the propensity toward recycling
one among them with Igles Corelli at Locanda della Tamerice
The perfect number is three (so they say) and the duo needs a top performer in the world of the mixologist
the professional couple is joined by Francesco Ricci
a bar manager oriented toward experimentation and contemporaneity
an industrial chic location that mixes elements found in flea markets with contemporary crafts made from unusual materials
but also very cozy and versatile: ideal for a drink or dinner for two
both in the well-kept garden with several rather sought-after succulent species
one of the seven of the rainbow and symbolically attributed
where the cheffe gives its guests a glimpse of what they are going to taste
In addition to the dehor and the veranda restaurant space
there are also a couple of private rooms ideal for intimate
It must be said that Indaco's is a very creative and personal cuisine
The cheffe tells her story through her dishes
that do not lack unusual colors and combinations
but she does so only through the ingredients; everything else is rewritten with combinations that
thanks not least to the presence of lots of fruit
and if we consider that 70 percent of the vegetables come from the property's own garden
which is a handful of kilometers from the restaurant
The cheffe focuses on a taste for each dish and builds the right fertile soil around it in order to enhance it
Battarra's is a cuisine that does not want to please at all costs: it wants to lead the diner to understand her point of view
"The garden potato stuffed with paprika-flavored octopus
accompanied by salsa verde and taggiasche pesto" is interesting
of the octopus salad that most like to order when on vacation on our shores
A special mention must be made of the expertly cut and cooked tuna
which is served according to availability with peaches or pineapple
but this is the time to create what will be tomorrow's tradition
the ones you can't take off the menu according to regulars
smoked in cherry wood and served with apple
The fresh pasta is handled impeccably by the cheffe
it is suitable for stuffing or made into "tagliolini al nero"
is very rich and includes a selection of flatbreads
There is no shortage of crackers and breadsticks
featuring that lightness of someone who knows what he or she is doing while baking
From the desserts you can sense the cheffe's experience in pastry
She loves mascarpone and it shows in her "crispy cream puffs served with ice cream"
The petit fours is good and particularly beautiful
is the result of a daily work of experimentation
fermentations and combinations of ingredients give way to a rich selection of respectable spirits
if the trend in recent years was to present minimal drinks
today large scenic presentations are making a comeback
The cocktails can be enjoyed at the aperitif
It might be better to have half-servings of drinks during the meal
Restaurant Monday to Sunday - 20:00 - 03:00 closed on Tuesdays
Cocktail Bar from Monday to Sunday - 18:00 - 03:00

Villa Mussolini in Riccione hosts for the first time in Italy an exhibition dedicated to two great masters of modern photography
1986) and André Kertész (Budapest
curated by Marion Perceval and Matthieu Rivallin
is sponsored by the Municipality of Riccione and organized by Civita Exhibitions and Museums
in collaboration with diChroma Photography and Rjma Cultural Projects. This event is an opportunity to discover the creative universe of two artists who
have recounted everyday life with sensitivity and intensity
the exhibition Jacques Henri Lartigue and André Kertész
Masters of Modern Photography compares the two photographers
who are considered fundamental to the evolution of modern photography
historical director of the Department of Photography at MOMA New York
Jacques Henri Lartigue is “the forerunner of every interesting and living creation made during the 20th century,” while Henry Cartier Bresson considered Kertész his master: “whatever we do
is known for his vivid images that celebrate the lightness and fleeting beauty of life
capturing moments of joy and lightheartedness
Hungarian André Kertész stood out for a more reflective and introspective approach
light and urban geometry that can reveal the intimacy and complexity of modern life
The exhibition is divided into four thematic sections
which analyze the central themes in the works of the two photographers
The images range from Kertész’s introspection and observation of metropolises to the celebration of energy and spontaneity typical of Lartigue’s shots
Visitors will enjoy Lartigue’s images that evoke the atmosphere of the Paris Belle Époque and Kertész’s works that poetically depict the cities of Budapest
This visual dialogue between the works of the two masters makes it possible to highlight as much the similarities as the differences in their gaze
offering the public an analysis of the “short century” through two complementary photographic perspectives
Visitors can take advantage of an audio guide
to delve into each section of the exhibition itinerary
the exhibition is accompanied by a volume edited by Silvana Editoriale
which is an additional tool for delving into the works and visions of these two giants of photography
Jacques Henri Lartigue and André Kertész were born in the same year and both spanned almost the entire twentieth century
Lartigue was born into a wealthy French family
thanks to which he owned a camera as a child
He is an artist who expresses himself through photography
Kertész began photographing at a very young age
The success accorded him by the press and critics was immediate
During the interwar period they might have crossed paths in Paris
but they did not meet for the first time until 1972 in New York
The two exhibitions were a turning point for the careers of both
marking for Lartigue the beginning of international and institutional recognition and for Kertész the rediscovery of his work after two more problematic decades
the two exhibitions identify both as forerunners of visual modernity in the first half of the 20th century and pioneers of modern photography
Lartigue is described as an amateur photographer and Kertész as the inventor of photojournalism; their works have a unique aesthetic
Lartigue is considered a master of the snapshot
often photographing his living environment
characterized by sophisticated extravagance and carefree cosmopolitanism
Kertész is a master of reflective photography
a protagonist of what will be regarded as “humanist photography.” His stylistic signature is linked to the simpler sides of everyday life
Neither Lartigue nor Kertesz ever took the “easy” path to their recognition
They developed their activity with the greatest freedom
although never members of a school and without having created their own artistic current
the last few years are marked by exhibitions
Famous for different - even antagonistic - reasons
both become reference points for young artists
retracing their steps or exploring new avenues with the idea of purely visual play
they each built their work in their own way
always with “a step to the side.” Both gave their photographs a timeless dimension that explains their ever-renewed interest
Singular figures in the history of photography
both artists have realized this paradox: without direct artistic descent
they have become adored models and sacred monsters in the history of photography

on the ‘reincarnation’ of the Roma Fiction Fest,” commented the artistic director of IGSF
“This festival represented a unique event in the history of Italian audiovisual and today returns with a dual mission: on the one hand
to promote Italian production in a very diversified international context; on the other hand
to recognize the talents and excellences of our country
with particular attention to the protection of the current Star System and the commitment to building the future one

18-year-old Carlos D’Ambrosio broke the Italian record in the men’s 200 SCM freestyle
The 2007-born athlete touched the wall in 1:41.61, winning the event 5.18 seconds, and taking down Filippo Magnini‘s 2009 record of 1:41.65 from the European Championships in Istanbul
D’Ambrosio’s previous lifetime best was 1:43.25
set at the Short Course World Championships this past December in Budapest
he earned a bronze medal in the 4×200 free relay
posting a split of 1:41.48 on the third leg
The Italian team’s final time of 6:47.51 at that competition set a new national record
Most of D’Ambrosio’s improvement can be attributed to his first 150 meters
as he was 1.67 seconds faster through the first 150 compared to his previous best
His third 50-meter split was the most significant factor
as he outsplit his previous pace by 0.82 seconds on that 50 alone
See the full splits comparison between the two performances below
D’Ambrosio’s record marks a monumental moment in his young career
particularly because it was a Magnini record
Magnini is one of the most accomplished Italian swimmers of all time
with 53 international swimming medals across both short and long course
His accolades include gold medals in the men’s 100m freestyle at both the 2005 World Championships in Montreal and the 2007 World Championships in Melbourne
he won a bronze medal in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay at the 2004 Athens Games
thats moving for an 18 y/o — he and ragaini are quite a promising duo
Hopefully Lorenzo will be back to his best somebody too
such a shame he has struggled to return from mono
Try not to have incredibly Italian names challenge difficulty impossible
Hate to be a pedant but Carlos is Spanish and not common in Italy haha
I don’t think Randy was referring to the Carlos part
Italian has Italian surname… who knew

Television series are back in the spotlight with a new international event: the Italian Global Series Festival
Nine years after the last edition of the RomaFictionFest (2007-2016)
the world of TV series will find a new home between Rimini and Riccione from June 21 to 28
thanks to the initiative of APA – Associazione Produttori Audiovisivi
with the support of the Ministry of Culture
“A Cannes for fiction”: this is how Undersecretary for Culture Lucia Borgonzoni described the ambitious vision of the Festival
“Eight days in which artists and productions from Italy and abroad will take center stage
I am sure that this project will complete the international festival scene and establish itself as a major
The President of the Emilia-Romagna Region
also emphasized the importance of this new event: “In recent years
the Region has made significant investments in training and supporting regional
and international productions through the Emilia-Romagna Film Commission
This Festival represents an opportunity to further promote Emilia-Romagna as an ideal location for all types of film productions.”
The Italian Global Series Festival is born from the decade-long experience of the RomaFictionFest
“APA conceived the festival back in 2007
thanks to the intuition of Adriano Ariè and Carlo Bixio regarding the cultural and economic value of television series
producing ten editions,” recalled Chiara Sbarigia
“Italian seriality has made great strides in recent years
gaining popularity not only among Italian audiences but also worldwide
earning the respect of even the most discerning critics.”
This new edition will be directed by Marco Spagnoli
and experienced director who was already part of the RomaFictionFest team
Among the first announced highlights: a reunion of I Cesaroni
as well as a rich program of national and international series premieres and the presentation of exclusive unseen footage
The Romagna Riviera is ready to become the perfect stage to celebrate TV series

In the fourth, finally, a 25-22 that decreed the full victory and the three points in the standings.

In the Nicoletti sports center, nine fields were set up with 32 participating teams and over 350 young soccer players on the field for a fun day of sports with the awareness that just being there for a good cause makes everyone a winner. A special tournament where all the young participants will not take home a medal "but something more precious: a violet plant and many new incentives to respect our Mother Earth".
Finally, in Larciano, the season of the Esordienti C males of the Propaganda sector has also begun, where, since they are very young, only the times are noted. These are the protagonists from Empoli: Giorgio Volpini (class of 2017), Tommaso Mori ('16), Mattia Biancalani ('16) and Edoardo Sani ('17).
The only flaw was the goal conceded coldly by Greco, a small negative parenthesis in 90 minutes of authority. "These things can happen, the important thing is to react, immediately, which is what we did - says D'Amore -. Regardless, I believe that the values were already clear from the beginning, we made the performance, even in the first half and despite the disadvantage".
Straight on his way, clear and limpid as always, the mister ofImolese. And even if there are no more concrete objectives, the championship will have to be honored to the end, securing sixth place.
"We played our game, as always, like against Piacenza a week ago and like in San Mauro Pascoli at the end of March. A game that got nasty at the end? Yes, but not because of what my boys did, but because they started beating us. There are people who think that we have to give away games because we have already been safe for two months, but that's not the case. Now there's the San Marino and we will go there to win, as we will do until May, to finish in this position".
Tomorrow at 15pm the away match at the home of the Titans for the third to last match of the season, as an ex for D'Amore, who arrived at Imolese right after his experience at the helm of the then Victor (season 21/22).

The Most Serene Republic of San Marino is located in the middle of Italy
it’s one of the smallest nations in the world
Although only a few dozen kilometres from Italy’s Adriatic Coast
San Marino’s summit is almost 800 metres above sea level
And crowning this mountainous micro-state is the medieval Fortress of Guaita
focused on my churning bicycle pedals and the relentless climb up a twisting cobblestone road
We had been in Italy for almost two weeks and had yet to actually earn any of the fabulous meals we had devoured
It was a tough three-hour slog to San Marino’s pinnacle – but an easy glide back down to the coastal town of Riccione and Hotel Belvedere
Marina exudes the qualities of both caring mother and astute businesswoman
Her staff love her – and feed off her magnetism
This osmotic energy carries through to the guests
I felt justified in accepting a second helping of her remarkable Friday night paella
Marina is also an observant woman (I wouldn’t try stealing any silverware from the Belvedere)
“Would you like to play at lunch this afternoon
You’ll be biking up to a farmhouse and winery in the hills.”
“I can’t carry the ukulele on my bicycle,” I replied
we can bring it up for you,” she said happily
Our guide Dani-boy was nonchalant and pleasantly attended to each messy repair
When we arrived at the farmhouse his hands were black with grease
I scoured my brain for an appropriate tune to entertain a group of bicycle aficionados in the Rimini hills of Italy
My truncated version of That’s Amore went over well
Then I recounted Florence’s bike chain maladies by singing (with apologies to the Beatles):
decked out in jerseys from around the world
zany Italian drivers and overenthusiastic bicyclists do not mix
Marina was in the foyer to bid us arrivederci
offering a genuine hug – and a request that we soon return
the final leg of our month-long stay in Italia
The GPS indicated that our Airbnb in Lucca was three hours away
we took the road less travelled and turned what should have been a short jaunt into a seven-hour odyssey through the twisting
narrow country roads and unsurpassable beauty of Tuscany
I found Italian drivers really get it (unlike some folks piloting cars on Alberta’s highways)
I survived a month driving in Italy without incident: no fender-benders on narrow cobblestone streets
no roundabout collisions – and not one Italian offered a gesticulation as to where I might go and procreate
it will be a miracle if the post office doesn’t eventually deliver a slew of photo-radar tickets and one-way street infractions
It’s not an understatement to suggest that compliance with Italian driving laws is impossible
And Italian roads require super-human navigating skills
Florence (and our GPS) performed admirably – we were lost fewer than a dozen times
helped us park and escorted us to her lovely apartment in the heart of the Old City
(Our Airbnb experience throughout Italy was amazing
Many even stocked the fridge with Italian delights for our arrival.)
we signed up for a wine-tasting tour in the famous Brunello region of Montalcino
And it seemed every Tuscan hill was topped by an alluring fairy-tale-like village – with stone spires guarding the verdant fields of Italian spring
Mario Ciacci is the octogenarian who founded and still oversees Abbadia Ardenga winery – although these days Mario’s role seems limited to entertaining customers
dancing with the lady guests and sipping a little of his own beautifully-aged Brunello
He proudly walked us through the vintner’s process – and his priceless cellar – before serving us a simple lunch coupled with a multitude of his Abbadia vintages
He has a certain – pardon my French – joie de vivre
Mario is also a seasoned salesman: in addition to my traffic tickets
any day now we’re expecting an overseas shipment of Brunello wine
After three nights in Lucca and four in Siena
we moved on to Orvieto for our final few Italian nights
the itinerary was simple: explore the narrow
confusing streets of the city core for a day
then hop in the car and tour the surrounding countryside for a couple of days
All of these walled cities have their unique character but Orvieto is perhaps the most charming – and interesting
the town has remained impregnable for millennia
Its high walls provide a natural defence that could not be breached
Water was drawn from the ingeniously designed well of San Patrizio and food literally flew in through the windows: the people farmed pigeons
Thus both food and water were readily available without leaving the protection of the fortress
Orvieto is home to one of Italy’s most striking Gothic cathedrals
The gold-gilded façade of the duomo is spectacular at sunset
an ancient labyrinth of tunnels was carved into the tuff
(Perhaps flight from this siege-proof city would have been necessary had Orvieto been infiltrated by stool pigeons?)
We’ve been home for some time and the traffic tickets have yet to arrive – but I take solace in the fact that when they do
there will be a hearty glass of Brunello at hand to ease the pain
If you go: Hotel Belvedere specializes in hosting bike enthusiasts from around the world

Now that the Italian Open Championships have fully concluded from Riccione
we can take stock as to which swimmers have booked their tickets to Tokyo for the postponed 2020 Olympic Games
It’s important to note that there is a multi-qualification approach for Italian swimmers
these championships from Riccione represented the second official domestic qualifying opportunity
The initial Olympic selection competition was the Open Championships which took place in Riccione in December 2019
the following Italian swimmers qualified for the Games:
19-year-old Ceccon snagged a new Italian national record in the men’s 100m back, posting a winning effort of 52.84
That represented a monster personal best for the multi-Youth Olympic Games medalist
also matching the stiff qualification mark of 52.8 needed for Tokyo
As for Pilato, the 15-year-old also nabbed a new national record en route to qualifying for next year’s Games in the women’s 100m breast
Pilato stopped the clock in a speedy 1:06.02
getting under 1:07 for her first time ever
The Federnuoto qualification time for Tokyo rests at 1:06.4
The next Olympic qualifying event will take place from March 27-31st as the Absolute Italian Championships
As a final step to qualification, we reported how the DT Cesare Butini proposed the direct call of:
Matteo Restivo booked his ticket to Fukuoka with victory in the 200 back on the penultimate day of the Italian Championships in Riccione
The championships are the first of two meets where swimmers can book a spot on the team for Fukuoka with the second being the Sette Colli – held at the iconic Foro Italico – in June
Restivo – the 2018 European bronze medallist – added his name to the roster with a 1:56.96 effort in the 200 back
well inside the qualification time in Riccione
Federico Burdisso came from 0.28 adrift of Piero Codia at halfway to take the 100 fly by 0.01 by 51.86 to 51.87
The Olympic 200 fly bronze medallist has yet to book his ticket for Fukuoka
a year after he swam a 50.63 fly leg as the Italian men’s medley relay quartet matched Britain’s European record of 3:27.51 en-route to world gold
Marco de Tullio came from second at the final turn to come past Matteo Ciampi and add the 200 free to the 400
De Tullio blasted a fourth 50 of 26.72 to come home in 1:47.13 with Ciampi touching next in 1:47.65
Edoardo Giorgetti won the men’s 200br in 2:12.34
Sara Curtis set an Italian junior record in the 50 free
Ilaria Cusinato took the 200 fly in 2:09.03 and Anita Gastaldi won the 100 back in 1:00.92

Italian Alessandro Miressi notched the 100m free victory to qualify for the 2024 World Championships and 2024 Olymipc GAmes
November 30th, 2023 Europe, International, News, Previews & Recaps, Records
Alberto Razzetti produced his second national record while competing at the 2023 Italian Open Long Course Championships
After already nailing a new lifetime best and Italian standard of 1:56.21 in the men’s 200m IM
the 24-year-old doubled up with a new mark of 4:09.29 in the 400m IM
The previous Italian national record stood at the 4:09.88 Luca Marin put on the books at these same championships 16 years ago
Razzetti’s lifetime best in the longer IM rested at the 4:09.91 put up in the heats of the event at the 2020 Olympic Games
ultimately touching in 4:11.32 for 8th place
Razzetti wasted no time getting ahead of the field
He was ahead of the national record by more than a second with 100m remaining in the race and his 4:09.29 hacked over half a second when all was said and done
His time easily cleared the 4:11 set by the Italian Swimming Federation as the qualification benchmark for the 2024 Olympic Games
adding this to his already-qualified 200m IM event
He has also already qualified in both races for the 2024 World Championships
Razzetti now ranks #1 in the world this season and represents just one of two swimmers who have been sub-4:10 thus far
Miressi clocked 47.61 in the 100 free and Pilato 29.58 in the 50 breast
marin’s record was set at 2007 worlds not italian nationals
and then went faster than anyone else in the remaining 3 legs
Marco (Saul Nanni) has been sweet on Guenda (Fotini Peluso) for years
but she couldn’t care less; she views him solely as a pal who gives great advice on how to reunite with her former boyfriend
‘Under the Riccione Sun’ 3.5 stars Starring: Cristiano Caccamo
Since it’s not possible to enjoy anything approaching an actual summer vacation
we can experience one vicariously via “Under the Riccione Sun.”
This Italian charmer — debuting on Netflix — is a standard-issue romance
with budding relationships and unrequited love percolating among attractive
sun-drenched young twentysomethings enjoying a week of leisure at Riccione
a beach community on Italy’s Adriatic coast
So yes: Cinematographer Davide Manca spends considerable time surveying hunky guys and gorgeous gals in tight trunks and the briefest of bikinis
(An impressively wide range of the latter is provided by costume designer Valentina Mezzani.)
I actually approached this film with curiosity
wondering if Italian filmmakers would handle this genre with more grace than we Americans
Where most domestic examples succumb to coarse vulgarity and exaggerated characters
directors Niccolò Celaia and Antonio Usbergo — operating under the nom de film of “YouNuts” — take a gentler approach
allowing for the liberal application of F-bombs
which these young folks employ as default adjectives
Manca’s opening tableau is a stunner: an overhead traveling shot of Riccione’s amazingly huge beach expanse
replete with thousands (!) of geometrically precise umbrellas
This is the awesome setting into which the writers — Caterina Salvadori
Enrico Vanzina and Ciro Zecca — pour their characters
and it’d be hard to imagine anything more sparkling and seductive
Would-be musician Ciro (Cristiano Caccamo) arrives first
hoping to get noticed in some sort of performance competition
he stumbles into employment as a lifeguard
Caccamo looks a bit too old for his role.)
Ciro has a girlfriend back home — Violante (Rosanna Sapia) — who routinely checks on him via texts and phone calls
She has good reason; he attracts all manner of female attention
none more aggressive than the flirty Mara (Giulia Schiavo)
The bookish Marco (Saul Nanni) hits town mostly to be near Guenda (Fotini Peluso); he has carried a torch for her for years
despite her having been in a steady relationship that entire time — until now
because she has just been dumped by her boyfriend
Marco rents a room from Gualtiero (Andrea Roncato)
a middle-aged pick-up artist whose hallway is adorned with photos of various one-night stands; Marco immediately notices and wonders about a bare spot on the wall
indicating a photo removed for some reason
He winds up sharing a room with Tommy (Matteo Oscar Girggioli)
weed-toking slacker who’s flunking out of school and couldn’t care less
in 1982’s “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.”) Tommy’s stoner tendencies notwithstanding
could do far better than the insufferably vain Guenda
arrives chaperoned by his overly protective mother
Although understandably self-conscious about how his blindness might affect his potential as a “catch,” his insecurities are magnified by Irene’s well-intentioned but no less smothering presence
Vincenzo maintains an affable sense of humor
That serves him well when taken under the companionable wing of Furio (Davide Calgaro)
a friendly “loser” who wanted the lifeguard job that went to Ciro
Camilla (Isabella Ferrari) has been questioning her own long-term relationship; she hopes to attend university in Canada
which would put an obvious crimp on things
Everybody winds up in an amiable circle assembled by Mara
forever on the lookout for solid volleyball players who could help her team win an ongoing tournament
The mildly clumsy Emma (Claudia Tranchese) pops up
having been sent by Violante to keep an eye on Ciro
She lands a restaurant job for which she’s wholly unsuited
and serves here as the “plain one” amid all the beautiful types
Furio encourages Vincenzo to sign up on a dating app; Camilla
Vincenzo pretends that his phone camera is broken and they communicate solely via text
Marco confronts Guenda about her narcissism (the idea being
acting on this new awareness merely makes her reunite with the former boyfriend
which demotes Marco to her most trusted adviser
While trying to crash an “under 30” nightclub party that Vincenzo attends — ostensibly to “keep him safe” — Irene is ejected by Lucio (Luca Ward)
a ruggedly handsome bouncer who immediately takes a fancy to her
mischievously sexy and wholly unthreatening manner
The actors are laid-back and likable; if their characters aren’t terribly deep
and in most cases warm enough to deserve our sympathy or encouragement
It’s not hard to predict how folks will pair off
but that isn’t the point; the journey is just as engaging as the destination
particularly when set among Riccione’s beaches
The action is backed by a slew of larkish Italian pop songs (and I have to assume that the lyrics are less silly in their native tongue than when translated into English)
Netflix defaults to English subtitles and dubbing
and the latter is positively dire; be sure to switch to spoken Italian
or you’ll lose too much of the dialog’s emotional inflection and intensity

The 2019 Italian Championships kick-off tomorrow in Riccione, with the nation’s top talent vying for spots on the World Championships roster for Gwangju. Federica Pellegrini is among them
Although the 30-year-old Italian swimming icon had sworn off the 200m free previously
Pellegrini insists on competing in the event
having swum in Hangzhou at the 2018 Short course World Championships
She is listed on the start lists for the event here in Riccione
where she’ll also be wimming the 50m/100m back races in addition the the 50m/100m free
Below are the time standards needed to be obtained to wind up on the Italian roster:
Here are additional qualification parameters:
Excited about this – Expect some big swims this week from the Italians
Be sure to check out our SwimSwam Italia Channel – we’ll be covering in English
but Giusy will be going really in-depth in Italian
panziera) all the other have to swim their best time to qualify
Time standards quite severe for one of the most interesting national trial of this season
considering how rapidly is growing Italian Swimming
Martina Carraro set a national record of 1:05.86 in the 100m breaststroke at the Italian Swimming Championships to announce herself as a medal contender at the Tokyo Olympics in July
The meet represents the final chance to guarantee a spot on the Italian team for Tokyo although some swimmers may negotiate their way there at the Sette Colli in June

Carraro had qualified third in 1:06.97 from morning heats as three women hit the 1:06 mark with Benedetta Pilato‘s Italian record of 1:06.02 from December 2020 clearly under threat.

Arianna Castiglioni (1:06.37) and Pilato (1:06.38) led the way in prelims but it was Carraro – who won bronze at the 2019 World Championships – who became the first Italian to break the 1:06 barrier.
Pilato was first at halfway in 30.91 to Carraro’s 31.07 with Castiglioni in third (31.32) but a second 50 of 34.79 propelled the 27-year-old home.
Castiglioni produced the fastest second 50 of 34.68 to move on to Pilato’s shoulder with the pair both stopping the clock at 1:06.00.
Pilato had already booked her ticket for Tokyo and will now be joined by Carraro, who was some way inside the cut of 1:06.9.
In fact, all the first three were well inside the qualification time with Castiglioni failing to clinch a spot despite going 1:06.00 which begs the question of whether there will be room for an appeal given that time is speedier than the 1:06.02 in which Pilato had qualified.
Carraro had set a then national record of 1:06.36 to claim bronze behind Lilly King (1:04.93) and Yulia Efimova (1:05.49) in Gwangju in July 2019.
Saturday’s time was enough to guide the Italian to second in the rankings led by King and her 1:05.32 with Tatjana Schoenmaker of South Africa now relegated to third (1:05.89).
Carraro told the Italian Swimming Federation:
“It was a very difficult day, very tense. I was trying for the Olympics and I didn’t want to give it up for the world. I am really happy.
“I’m happy to be able to improve myself so much.
“Such a remarkable time I am very proud of the work we are doing. This morning I was amazed by the time Arianna Castiglioni swam but I remained focused on my race and my potential. I didn’t want to miss this opportunity.”

Federica Pellegrini led from start to finish to win the 200fr in 1:56.69 to go fifth in the rankings.
The 32-year-old four-time 200fr world champion was out in 26.81 and reached halfway in 56.24 (29.43).
Pellegrini turned at 15o in 1:26.37 (30.13) before a final 50 of 30.32 guided her home almost three seconds ahead of Margherita Panziera – who has won the 100-200 backstroke double so far this week – who touched in 1:59.52.
Stefania Pirozzi completed the top three in 2:00.38.
Pellegrini will compete in her fifth Olympics, 13 years after she won 200 free gold at Beijing 2008.
“Sorry for the tears but these last few months have not been easy. Swimming this time was not easy and it’s even more beautiful because it’s my race.
“I’m happy with the time, with everything. They are in line with the other Italian championships made in recent years.
“Now I can breathe much better. I have reached the fifth Olympics and I feel like crying again.”

Stefano Ballo won the men’s race in 1:46.76 – outside the individual cut although good enough for the relay – ahead of Stefano Di Cola and Fillipo Megli who couldn’t be separated as both touched in 1:47.75
Elena Di Liddo was 0.71 off her Italian record of 57.04 in the 100 fly but her winning time of 57.75 was outside the standard required to book an individuial ticket to Tokyo – although it was good enough for the mixed relay
Di Liddo turned at halfway alongside Ilaria Bianchi as both women reached 50 at 27.27 with the former putting clear daylight between them with a 30.58 second 50

Piero Codia won the men’s 100 fly from Federico Burdisso
who is already on the plane to Tokyo in the 200
Codia was out in 24.05 and back in 28.01 to stop the clock at 52.06 to Burdisso’s 52.14 but the winning time was outside the 51.5 needed to punch a ticket for the Games
Simone Sabbioni was a clear winner in the men’s 100 back although his time of 53.91 was outside the cut for Tokyo
Matteo Restivo (54.41) and Christopher Ciccarese (54.68) claimed the runners-up slots
Silvia Scalia won the women’s 50 back in 28.17
