In this monthly column, Louisa Buck looks at how the art world is responding to the environmental and climate crisis.
Birds are doing it, bees are doing it, even butterflies and trees are doing it… The current show at Castello di Rivoli in Turin Mutual Aid: Art in Collaboration with Nature marks a new departure for exhibition-making by being entirely devoted to work created using the myriad forces of nature. Human artists may be the initiators but here all exhibits are shaped and often completed by the non-human world.

The Enchanted Castle aims to dedicate an entire floor of Castello di Rivoli to young visitors
Recognising children and youth as the “ideal visitors” of these spaces
the project allows the broader public to experience an exhibition designed for their eyes
thus transforming the museum into a “re-enchanted” space
This innovative project turns the Museum into an experiential and inclusive educational laboratory and a school of active citizenship
Born from the collaboration with the Education Department and a team of educators
the project is based on a participatory approach
co-creating the museum experience with the visitors themselves
the narration around the artworks will be a work in progress
conceived and built together with a group of young people from Rivoli
The Enchanted Castle draws inspiration from the idea of the museum as an agorà
a meeting place where art is central to a process of learning and growth that involves the entire community
On the occasion of Castello di Rivoli’s 40th anniversary
the project offers an opportunity to re-actualise the Museum’s mission to “promote knowledge of contemporary art” by directly engaging the public of the future to foster social and civic development within individuals and the local area
states: The Enchanted Castle is an opportunity to nurture a sense of belonging to the Museum among young people
The innovative approach proposed by The Enchanted Castle fully embraces the spirit with which the Education Department has worked since the Museum’s opening
through active participation and shared projects that have always been the guiding principles of our work

An unidentified individual used a ladder to break the beloved venue's front door and window
resulting in "significant repair costs"
BY Megan LaPierrePublished Sep 17
A GoFundMe crowdsourcing campaign has been launched to support repairs at the Rivoli — the longstanding performance space
bar and restaurant in Toronto's Queen West neighbourhood — following a break-in
During a routine maintenance task on Sunday (September 15)
an unidentified individual used a ladder left in the venue's front entrance to break the front door and the window inside
"This senseless act of destruction has left us with significant repair costs that our limited funds cannot cover," owner and operator John Christensen wrote in the fundraiser's description
Christensen is looking to raise the $5,000 required to repair the damaged door and window
but is adamant that community contributions of any size will help
and will be put directly towards the cost of fixing the damages
"Your support will help us continue to provide unforgettable experiences and support the vibrant music community that makes the Rivoli a cherished part of Toronto's cultural landscape," he added

Alice and Jerry Voigt are in their 19th year of managing the Rivoli Theatre
CEDARBURG — Jerry and Alice Voigt were honored with a key to the city of Cedarburg for their commitment to the preservation of the Rivoli Theatre and dedication to the community
The last key to the city was given to former Cedarburg Police Chief Tom Frank when he retired in 2022
"You both have been so very dedicated to a variety of aspects of our greater community for decades ..
The community has benefited more than you could possibly know
We are grateful," said Mayor Pat Thome on Monday
The Rivoli Theatre opened its doors in 1936 to the Cedarburg community and has been in operation continuously since then
the Marcus Corporation started leasing and showing movies there until the Cedarburg Landmark Preservation Society purchased the building in late 2006
The Preservation Society then enlisted the help of the Voigts to help get the one-screen theatre running
The Voigts originally weren’t interested in running the Rivoli
SIGN UP
"They’ve done over and beyond," said Don Levy
the founding member of the Preservation Society
"The greatest pleasure I’ve ever had was giving them the keys to Rivoli ..
They’re remarkable and they’ve made the Rivoli continue to be the gem of the city of Cedarburg
We couldn’t have done it without you guys."
Alice Voigt said they have loved every minute of living in Cedarburg
"God has blessed us with so many opportunities and the Rivoli has been a long-term one for us ..
It’s been wonderful and it keeps us involved with all the people in Cedarburg and all the newcomers and we really appreciate being able to be in a place where we can bless people with love and a good movie and the best popcorn," she said
from the beginning to try to bring the Rivoli back," Jerry Voigt said
and hopefully because of what the Preservation Society had done and all of the volunteers
it will continue on beyond our lifetimes."
The Voigts dedicated their lives to education
Jerry Voigt also used to be the town of Cedarburg Board chairman
he served on the boards of the Greater Cedarburg Foundation
and was a cochairman on the Cedarburg Pool Fundraiser

Frieze returns to The Shed in May with more than 65 of the world’s leading contemporary art galleries and the acclaimed Focus section led by Lumi Tan
The director of Castello di Rivoli speaks about sharing institutional resources and relationships with local and international audiences
Vanessa Peterson How have you found your first year as director of Castello di Rivoli
but moved away in 2001 and have mostly lived abroad since – although I reconnected with the city when I was director of Artissima between 2010 and 2012
Castello di Rivoli is an institution that I have always admired and it’s been great to get to know its inner workings – not only to see what it needs but
The response has been very positive because it’s a much-loved institution
VP How do you see Castello di Rivoli’s relationship to the local versus the international
FM I think that’s one of the most interesting questions institutions currently face
I am trying to de-demonize the word ‘provincial’ because I firmly believe that it’s possible to be relevant both to your local community and on an international level
I worked as artistic director of Tate Liverpool for five years [2012–17]
but I don’t think I can apply Nicholas Serota’s method here and turn Castello di Rivoli into Tate Modern
because this is not a vast building in the centre of a huge metropolis
it’s a matter of hyper-localizing in order to become internationally relevant
which is an approach we’re currently devising different strategies for
I encountered a small but significant community of international artists
Cally offered to run a summer school at Castello di Rivoli
so I told her she could have operational carte blanche with one condition: we could only have people teaching on the course who live in Turin or the wider Piedmont region
The school was designed for Italian artists who have finished their studies but have not had international educational opportunities
We wanted to explore an approach that allows the local to flourish
otherwise we run the risk of parachuting in a programme that is relevant internationally but may not really speak to our immediate public
VP Do you have a sense of the kinds of communities living in Turin that might be curious to visit but haven’t yet done so – particularly since Castello di Rivoli is located some distance from the city centre
FM There are various communities in the local area that we’re trying to engage with
‘Mutual Aid: Art in Collaboration with Nature’
the first show I’ve curated for Castello di Rivoli
is intended to attract people to the gallery who are interested in the question of interspecies collaboration and the natural world
even if they might not be familiar with contemporary art
The works in this show will enable them to experience something that makes them say
also nods to my approach to running the museum
which involves reaching out to Turin’s network of local institutions
Our approach shouldn’t be competitive: we should be working together and working with the public
It’s not about telling audiences what to do
or what to know; it’s about asking them whether there’s a way we can make what we do more relevant to them
There is a barrier to access not only in relation to Castello di Rivoli
but to contemporary art more generally throughout Italy
museums are associated with academia and knowledge-creation: there’s this sense of division between the so-called experts and non-experts
The question is: how do we make our institutions relevant and appealing to those who operate outside of academia
we are constantly experimenting with new methods
One thing we plan to do is to rehang our collection alongside 21st century artworks to try to make it as diverse as possible
I also want to transform the third floor into a museum for children
We’ll take iconic pieces from the collection by artists like Lucio Fontana and Claes Oldenburg
working with a group of children and young people
we’ll devise a narrative that articulates why these particular works are interesting
I’m going to turn the third floor into an ‘Enchanted Castle’ – this is the title of the project – because its aim is to re-enchant the works through the eyes of our younger visitors
VP The wall panel at the start of ‘Mutual Aid’ acknowledges the exhibition’s non-human collaborators – different species of trees
for instance – alongside the artists whose works are on view
FM I want to create as many instances as possible where the viewer is invited to interpret the work for themselves
rather than being guided by the curatorial presentation
Museums need to be places where one goes to ask questions
I want to give the audience as many tools as possible to formulate their own ideas and readings of the show while leaving some level of indeterminacy
You can present art on a theoretical level but
if your audience can’t understand what you’re saying
because different situations have different solutions
I’ve experimented with this in previous roles
we tried pairing artists’ exhibitions: Piet Mondrian with Nasreen Mohamedi [2014] and Jackson Pollock with Glenn Ligon [2015]
I call it a cybernetic approach: you need to be listening all the time
otherwise your programming becomes formulaic
I’ve increased the number and diversity of visitors
VP Can you speak more to the idea of collaborating with other local institutions
funding has been shrinking radically in the arts
and Castello di Rivoli is in a very different financial situation now than it was 15 years ago
I’m working with my institutional colleagues in Turin – Chiara Bertola at the Gallery of Modern Art
Davide Quadrio at the Museum of Oriental Art as well as Beatrice Merz and Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo at the two eponymous foundations – to find more radical ways of collaborating
It’s an unconventional approach but one that can break down ingrained ways of working that no longer serve us
we can go further and do more with the same budget
FM I hope to establish a truly collaborative relationship with Castello di Rivoli’s many audiences
Although the collection belongs to everyone and the building is publicly owned
I would like to see an increase in emotional ownership
The programme we have planned – which includes a range of new activities
– aspires to achieve this goal of invested ownership
I want to capture new audiences by creating additional reasons for them to visit

— South Carolina leaders have approved plans to build a housing development on a former Upstate plantation
where some believe enslaved people are buried
The Planning Commission approved the development in early 2024, however advancements were delayed after a lawsuit claimed there were numerous unmarked graves of former slaves located on the property
Circuit Judge Lawton McIntosh sent the issue back to the planning commission
giving them the responsibility to determine if there are unmarked graves on the site
“The issue of the existence of slave graves and their destruction is an important issue that should not be effectively discounted and not considered by planning commissions,” McIntosh wrote in his order.
Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea presents Rebecca Horn – Cutting Through the Past, the first retrospective dedicated to the artist in a public museum institution in Italy. Born from a collaboration with Haus der Kunst, Munich, the exhibition follows the artist’s solo show organised by the same institution in 2024. Taking place in the Manica Lunga of the Castello, the exhibition is curated by Marcella Beccaria.
The exhibition is a cooperation between Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, Rivoli-Torino and Haus der Kunst, München, where it was curated by Jana Baumann.

Ouverture 2024 celebrates 40 years of activity of Castello di Rivoli
The title Ouverture intentionally references the one used for the inaugural exhibition curated by Rudi Fuchs
the exhibition was conceived as a hypothesis for a future collection
Focused on works that were new or recent at the time
the exhibition recognised the value of individual artistic research rather than adherence to specific art historical movements
Ouverture 2024 reactivates the same principles
presenting the exceptional collection the institution has since built
The project primarily focuses on works from the collection produced since the 2000s—with some exceptions
as Fuchs did—to reaffirm the institution’s essential focus on contemporary art
Ouverture 2024 is conceived as a proposal for a 21st-century museum
rooted in Europe but open to a broader global vision
the exhibition gathers voices that have deeply influenced the artistic discourse and is inspired by principles of inclusion
states: Taking into account the developments that have occurred in the contemporary art world over the past decades
Ouverture 2024 also references the ambitious and diverse exhibition programme organised by Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea over the years
in which many works were born thanks to the exceptional context of the unfinished Savoy residence and the direct dialogue between directors
Dubbed the 'Magrabi-Rivoli Enterprise', the merging of the two multi-brand eyewear retail businesses looks to redefine the Middle East eyewear market, and deliver substantial benefits for customers and sector stakeholders, according to a press release. The newly combined business will have an enhanced store portfolio that will establish Magrabi Retail as the significant market share holder in the seven countries it operates, including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain and Egypt.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Museum, two major exhibition projects are being held: a new display of the permanent collection, titled Ouverture 2024, dedicated to works produced since the 2000s, and the monumental installation Shade Between Rings of Air by Gabriel Orozco.
On the occasion of its 40th anniversary, Castello di Rivoli presents two major new exhibitions, opening on Thursday 19 December 2024: the reinstallation of works from the museum’s collections, titled Ouverture 2024, in homage to the inaugural project of the Castello, curated by Rudi Fuchs; and the monumental installation Shade Between Rings of Air, 2003, by Gabriel Orozco.
Curated by Marcella Beccaria and Francesco Manacorda
Ouverture 2024 celebrates the 40th anniversary of Castello di Rivoli by creating a proposal for a 21st-century museum: rooted in Europe, but open to a broader global vision that gathers voices that have profoundly shaped the artistic discourse, drawing inspiration from principles of inclusion, social participation, and cultural engagement.
The exhibition project marks the continuation of a journey toward the creation of an open, inclusive museum designed to engage diverse viewpoints and narratives. Ouverture 2024 aims to be a prelude to something yet to come, while being firmly rooted in what has preceded it, conceived as a journey through specific chapters of the history of Castello di Rivoli and its future, renewing its function as a device for knowledge, reflection, and personal and social growth.
Gabriel Orozco – Shade Between Rings of Air
As part of the celebrations for the 40th anniversary of Castello di Rivoli, starting Thursday 19 December 2024, the large installation Shade Between Rings of Air, 2003, by Gabriel Orozco (Xalapa, Mexico, 1962) will be on display in Room 18 of Castello, curated by Marcella Beccaria.
After its initial presentation at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003, Shade Between Rings of Air was exhibited at the Palacio de Cristal in Madrid and later at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City in 2004. The new installation is developed specifically for Castello di Rivoli and is created in dialogue with the artist.

Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev – director of Castello di Rivoli until the end of 2023 – has consistently emphasized this in her interviews
just as it was clear to her predecessors: Rudi Fuchs

marking the fortieth anniversary of Castello di Rivoli (the first Italian museum exclusively dedicated to contemporary art) Ouverture 2024 draws its title from the inaugural exhibition curated by Rudi Fuchs in 1984
echoing its programmatic intent: to project a vision for the future
While that exhibition presented an ideal selection of works proposed for the museum’s collection
the current show aims to critically interrogate its significance after four decades
The idea of a museum developing in parallel with its collection – a key distinction from a kunsthalle
which is exclusively focused on temporary exhibitions – is reaffirmed with particular emphasis on this anniversary
Ouverture 2024 is not a thematic exhibition but a public manifestation of the collection itself
pressing issues and potential directions for the future are clearly reflected
blending established artistic trends with the museum’s latest acquisitions
including works selected at the most recent edition of Artissima
This configuration positions the museum as an institution that embraces «multiple modernities and parallel systems of knowledge
as articulated by Marcella Beccaria and Francesco Manacorda
This openness builds on a trajectory that had already begun under Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev
who broadened the historical scope of the collection through the inclusion of the Fondazione Cerruti ancient art collection
housed at Villa Cerruti; not to mention her pioneering joint directorship with the GAM (Galleria d’Arte Moderna) in Turin
strengthened by the current period of renewal in Turin
The recent appointments of Chiara Bertola at GAM and Davide Quadrio at MAO (Museo d’Arte Orientale) have created a fertile environment where the leadership of the three museums engage in dialogue to foster more inclusive and less Western-centric narratives

The connection between them lies in their shared relationship with nature

Pistoletto proposed an approach that challenged the logic of accumulation and exclusion
in which it is impossible to see one’s reflection

Despite the physical distance between them on the floor plan of Castello di Rivoli
Pierre Huyghe and Anna Boghiguian metaphorically employ the same language – using
fictional storytelling as a tool – to narrate two geographically distant tales
The French artist is present on the first floor with a cinematic piece
focused on a group of scholars’ journey to Antarctica
determined to explore the newly exposed lands due to melting ice
The journey referenced in Anna Boghiguian’s environmental installation
According to the Egyptian artist’s narrative
the wreckage displayed in the exhibition would have emerged from the melting ice
becoming witnesses to the politics of salt – a precious preservative and currency of exchange since the time of Alexander the Great
“A Proposal for Syncretism – This Time Without Genocide”
The exhibition route concludes with a reflection on the consequences of colonialism
whose walls are adorned with exotic bird feathers and their names
alludes to the verbal appropriation by Europeans in tropical America
paints plant species introduced into Italy following Christopher Columbus’s voyages
forces our gaze onto the consequences of wartime destruction
conceals the remnants of buildings destroyed by Russian bombings
The intention of the original Ouverture survives in today’s installation, with its free associations and unexpected juxtapositions, preserving at Rivoli the spirit of «[…] a castle with diverse works where one can walk from one surprise to another[1]»
Ouverture 2024 sends a clear signal of resilience
presenting itself as a manifesto for the art museum: a space capable of engaging with a layered past
symbolically represented by the baroque walls housing the collection
while also projecting itself into a future where diversity and alternative systems of thought find meaningful representation

David Altmejd‘s fantastical creations occupy a lucid state
The human body and decay are recurring themes that the Canadian artist often touches on in his anthropomorphic sculptures
which appear as if a character from Alice in Wonderland (1951) stepped into an eerie live action film

Castello di Rivoli presents two new autumn dates of Living Museum
The program promotes experimental approaches that bridge various disciplines
where visual art intersects with other contemporary languages
The project explores the dual nature of the word ‘live,’ emphasizing the inseparable connection between art and audience participation within the Museum’s spaces
2024 – AMACI Giornata del Contemporaneo | Italian Contemporary Art– offering to the public a series of activities featuring international artists
The two events are dedicated to the theme of Erratic Bodies – a title borrowed from the glacial erratics in the morainic landscape of the Val di Susa – and are curated by Giulia Colletti
Transported by Alpine glaciers to the valley floor during the Ice Age
deposited in unexpected locations across the Piedmont region
often became objects of worship and sacred rituals
Composed of sediments distinct from their surrounding environment
glacial erratics serve as witnesses to an unusual journey
They thus embody a state of being ‘out of place’ in their context
prompting reflections on contemporary issues of migration and transition for both human and non-human bodies
as well as the challenges posed by past and present climate changes
The artists featured over the two days are Mohammad Al Faraj
and various cultural languages and approaches
the significance of collective memory—not as a mere sum of individual experiences
but as a process of shared narrative that cements a common identity
By promoting the convergence of transdisciplinary research
do not exist within a confined space but take shape and meaning in their erratic existence
continually shifting direction and drawing from the overcoming of geographical
The schedule includes various artistic interventions addressing both individual and collective challenges related to the erasure and rehabilitation of historical narratives
embracing a state of personal and collective metamorphosis
Living Museum Erratic Bodies I September 28
the public is invited to actively participate in PALINSESTO
the first chapter of Matilde Cerruti Quara’s intervention at Castello di Rivoli
The artist encourages visitors to interact with her body by writing freely on it in response to the question ‘WHO ARE YOU?’
By dissolving her artistic identity and viewing the performer as a channel for receiving and transmitting a universal message
Matilde offers herself as a blank page and mirror for collective thought
prompting reflection on the multiple layers that make up the narratives we tell ourselves
The performance draws inspiration from the history of Castello
which in its own way is an ultimate palimpsest
particularly from the inscriptions found on its walls left by soldiers during the Second World War
The afternoon continues with a preview of Lea Porsager‘s Rosy-fingered Dusk (2023) and Clockwork C.O.W
two 90-second flicker film loops accompanied by texts and pictograms
Both works reference the so-called Doomsday Clock
created by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists as a way of tracking how close humanity is to a global catastrophe
“moo-ons”) move sleepily and erratically through impossible
the public is invited to participate in REALISMO MAGICO
an immersive poetry performance that concludes Matilde Cerruti Quara’s intervention
she has written new texts reflecting on memory
Exploring the human paradox with its dance of light and shadow—especially in times of war—the performance aims to offer the audience a poetic ritual as a means of collective reconnection
Lamin Fofana will present a new performance designed to explore
the notion of the extension and fluctuation of time
Living Museum Erratic Bodies II October 12
Castello di Rivoli will present Living Museum as part of AMACI Giornata del Contemporaneo | Italian Contemporary Art
Inspired by Toni Morrison’s text The Site of Memory
Ufuoma Essi’s film Half Memory will be presented for the first time in Italy at Castello di Rivoli
featuring a live soundtrack by Shamica Ruddock
The film is a profound meditation on memory
exploring the present as an artifact of the past
Mohammad Al Faraj will present a participatory action titled What it Will Take to Flock the Wings of Freedom Again
The audience will join the artist in awakening the bird of prayer
using palm leaves as wings and words and poetry as the wind
The museum’s café will offer special aperitifs
providing an opportunity to enjoy a drink and food
The special aperitifs are conceived by artist Moza Almatrooshi and prepared by the museum café
Almatrooshi’s artistic and culinary practice draws on ancient and modern mythologies of the Arabian Peninsula
influencing both her recipe creation and her political research on food in the region
Invernomuto will present BlackMed for the first time at Castello di Rivoli
This project was initiated as a digital archive of sounds collected from various sources
inspired by the insights of scholar Alessandra Di Maio on the Mediterranean Sea
Based on the identification of this fluid space marked by migratory crises
and exchange that are constants in its history and present
For the presentation of BlackMed at Castello di Rivoli
there will also be a special afternoon visit to the Cerruti Collection
hosted at Villa Cerruti and guided by art historian Fabio Cafagna
The visit will focus on the various representations of the Mediterranean over the centuries
starting with the 17th- and 18th-century atlases from Francesco Federico Cerruti’s collection
It will also offer an opportunity to reinterpret some works from the Collection from an alternative perspective
highlighting the connections between the regions bordering the Mediterranean

the fair that makes the city the center of the international art scene for a week
contemporary art events and exhibitions develop in a capillary way
Through three exhibitions visited on the occasion of the fair (Retinal Rivality by Cyprien Gaillard in the spaces of OGR
Clara e altre storie by Rossella Biscotti and the group show Mutual Aid at Castello di Rivoli) we will try to investigate the common elements and themes towards which contemporary art is moving
Critics have long been divided between those championing committed
politically active art and those who are valuing the poetic independence of the artistic product from its political function
While the fair staged the art market’s competitive dynamics
neighboring institutions present exhibitions relevant to every polìtes of the city
this isn’t political art in the traditional sense
like that of the protest era: now the artists use current events as images
in some cases it’s obvious their will to bring out forgotten and controversial stories
like a complex systems of signs that they reinterpret through artistic language
in Cyprien Gaillard’s “Retinal Rivalry”
we witness the transformation of the Renaissance composer Orlande de Lassus’s statue in Munich
photos and flowers in memory of Michael Jackson
a video installation co-commissioned and co-produced by OGR Torino
is an exploration of stereoscopic cinema’s visual potential
Through the immersive qualities of the 3d projection
the artist is able to incorporate the viewer into the forgotten monuments
the new virtual sculpture creates a relationship with the ancient statuary
Through a journey into the German urban environment
he propose pictures like Burger King inside housed in a former Nazi rally venue in Nuremberg
or abandoned monuments used as a background of daily life that goes without considering them
The theme of visibility and invisibility extends to Rossella Biscotti’s solo exhibition at Castello di Rivoli
In this anthological exhibition a journey through forgotten stories is proposed
the Italian artist’s attempt is to bring the repressed history to the viewer’s mind
presided over in the “Bunker Hall” of the Foro Italico between 1982 and 1984
where members of Autonomia Operaia and Potere Operaio were accused
This event was the first real political trial in Italy
The work consists of an audio part of the live recording of the trial and the sculptural reconstruction of some parts of the bunker
Rossella Biscotti’s images are focused on voids of history
debated and controversial and often hidden moments
Her practice essentially works on emptiness

This latest work introduces another aspect on which the artists are working: if on one side
the social aspect is highlighted in the interest in history and the monument
the great theme is the relationship that man maintains with nature
which is also explored at the Rivoli castle through the exhibition Mutual Aid
curated by Francesco Manacorda and Marianna Vecellio
The path develops by including artists from the sixties to today
If we follow Rossella Biscotti’s warning in the work Crude oil
whom warns us about man’s pollution on nature caused by oil extraction and the consequent oil spills into the sea
the Mutual Aid exhibition proposes a solution through collaboration
and not with the artist’s exploitation on nature
The natural element often creates the artistic product
making the “long sleeve” of the castle an organism composed of small living and intelligent cells
This mutual support is specified in the practice of Tomás Saraceno
the Argentine artist explores interspecies collaboration
giving visibility to the light and perfect textures created by the arachnids
with which they build their own shelters or cases to protect themselves
The result of this collaboration with the world of insects is formalized as small jewels made by microscopic blacksmiths who imaginatively build their baroque homes
the entire exhibition explores the creative potential of the collaboration between artist and nature
proposing a silent rescue for this one world
are some of the images that characterize this path that art is tracing
create the new and future relationship of man within nature

The Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea in Rivoli has announced its exhibition calendar for 2025
a year that promises to be packed with events and innovative projects
After celebrating the 40th anniversary of its opening
the castle is preparing a program that mixes major exhibitions
and an ongoing commitment to contemporary art
Highlights include two major retrospective exhibitions and a project that will actively engage contemporary artists in a work designed for the castle. The first major exhibition in 2025 is dedicated to Rebecca Horn (Michelstadt
a German artist who has indelibly marked the history of contemporary art
curated by Jana Baumann and Marcella Beccaria
is Horn’s first retrospective in Italy and is part of a collaboration between Castello di Rivoli and Munich’s prestigious Haus der Kunst
celebrates the artist’s influence on the international scene and his ability to explore complex themes such as time
The exhibition includes a wide selection of works ranging from the 1970s to the present day
Among the most emblematic works are kinetic sculptures such as Peacock Machine (1982)
created for his participation in documenta
and monumental installations such as Inferno (1993-94) and Concert for Anarchy (2006)
A central element of the exhibition will be large-scale projections of his video performances
including Performance I (1970-72) and Berlin (1974-75)
A special section of the exhibition will focus on the installation Cutting Through the Past (1993)
which gives the entire retrospective its title
the museum will also host other significant Horn films
such as La Ferdinanda - Sonate für eine Medici Villa (1981) and Buster’s Bedroom (1990)
which will be screened in the Museum Theater
Castello di Rivoli will instead host a retrospective of Enrico David (Ancona
one of the most original and multifaceted contemporary artists
Tomorrow I’ll Be Back is an exhibition curated by Marianna Vecellio that explores the eclecticism of his work
from drawing to environmental installations
designed specifically for the spaces of the Manica Lunga
investigates the psychological and inner condition of the contemporary human being
a theme that pervades David’s research
The works on display include impressive installations such as Madreperlage (2003)
which marked David’s debut in international galleries
which was shown for the first time at the ICA in London
Other works in the exhibition include Absunction Cardigan (2009)
made on the occasion of the artist’s nomination for the Turner Prize
shown at the Italian Pavilion of the Venice Biennale
The exhibition also includes new productions by the artist
which testify to the continuous evolution of his artistic language
Castello di Rivoli is offering a new and innovative exhibition project that actively involves contemporary artists: Inserzioni
which can be visited from September 2025 to March 2026
invites a selection of artists to intervene in the museum’s halls
creating works that are in dialogue with the works in the permanent collection
The project has a six-month duration and will be renewed twice a year
resulting in a constantly renewing group exhibition
The goal of Inserzioni is to enrich the museum’s exhibition itinerary with new visions and new interpretations
bringing contemporary art into confrontation with the history of art narrated by the Castello’s collections
which recalls the original Ouverture formula devised by the museum’s first director
will give space to works that include movements
and geographical areas that have so far been underrepresented within the museum’s halls.
