Italy (AP) — The findings of an initial expert report were astonishing: One of the 20th century’s revered Catholic leaders
who built an international movement of community care for people with intellectual disabilities
perverted Catholic doctrine about Jesus and Mary to justify his own sexual compulsions and abuse women
The findings of a second report were even worse: The movement he created had at its core a secret
mystical-sexual “sect,” and was founded for the precise purpose of hiding the sect’s deviant activities from church authorities
L’Arche’s national and regional leaders have been meeting for the past week in the hills outside Rome for the first time since the latest revelations to chart a path forward
now that their official history has been shown to be a lie and their hero-founder Vanier a narcissistic and delusional abuser
as L’Arche’s most devoted staff processed the gravity of Vanier’s deceptions and what it means for the organization’s future
according to interviews at the retreat with The Associated Press
in a vision that then is revealed to you and you’re told it’s not like that,” said Azucena Bustamante
who oversees five L’Arche communities in Honduras
“It does frustrate me — the damage it has caused to a lot of people who believed in this
and then found out everything we were made to believe
founded L’Arche in 1964 in northern France
He initially invited two intellectually disabled men to live with him
Catholic-inspired community into an international movement bringing people with and without disabilities to live together in a spirit of mutual respect
religiously devout parents — his father was governor general of Canada — Vanier arrived at his calling after having joined a spiritual community
in 1950 that was founded by a French Dominican priest
it was at L’Eau Vive that Vanier fell under Philippe’s spell and was initiated into the priest’s mystical-sexual practices
Philippe developed his twisted theology after experiencing what he called a mystical “grace” one night in 1938 in Rome
while looking at a fresco of the Madonna in the church atop the Spanish Steps
the “graces” came to involve sexual gratification with women that both Philippe and Vanier justified by claiming that Jesus and Mary were involved in similarly incestuous sexual relationships
The Vatican was informed of Philippe’s deviant practices by two victims in 1952; four years later it sanctioned Philippe for “false mysticism.” The Vatican forbade him from public or private ministry
ordered L’Eau Vive dissolved and its members forbidden from reconstituting the community
Vanier and the women they had manipulated disobeyed
according to private correspondence and church archives only recently made available to the L’Arche-commissioned researchers
Philippe resumed his priestly ministry as his Dominican superiors ignored the Vatican sanctions
The study commission concluded in its January report that Vanier did so as a “screen” to hide the reuniting of the original L’Eau Vive group
even though there was also a sincere commitment to help people who otherwise would have been institutionalized
The study commission identified at least 25 women whom Vanier abused
It determined that Vanier and Philippe’s deviant practices didn’t extend beyond the core “sect” at the original community in northern France
especially in the way authority and power are exercised in L’Arche’s more than 150 communities in 37 countries
L’Arche’s leaders have apologized to the victims
thanked them for their courage in coming forward
and assumed responsibility for not having spotted the abuses earlier
They say they questioned Vanier repeatedly as soon as the first victims came forward
as well as what he knew about Philippe’s 1956 Holy Office condemnation
L’Arche was able to obtain a summary report of Phillipe’s 1956 canonical trial
which shows the Vatican was well-versed in the dynamics of abuse of power over women
decades before the #MeToo movement put it in the spotlight
who hailed from a variety of academic disciplines
blamed the Vatican’s secrecy in handling the Philippe case for laying the groundwork for L’Arche’s scandal
They found that no one except a few Vatican and Dominican superiors knew of Philippe’s deviance or his sanctions
“precisely what allowed him to maintain his reputation for holiness and to rewrite history as he pleased.”
One of the Vatican’s top experts in abuse prevention
praised L’Arche for its “fearless” courage in exposing the painful truth about its past and said the phenomenon of spiritual gurus misusing their authority can’t be ignored any longer by the church
“Some time back we did not speak about the abuse of power as the root cause of basically every type of abuse
“But it has become clear that this is something that we need to engage further,” said Zollner
who runs an institute at the Pontifical Gregorian University that trains church personnel on preventing abuse
The L’Arche community on Rome’s outskirts was buzzing with activity on a recent weekday: After nearly three years of pandemic lockdown
volunteers were helping some of the 19 live-in residents decorate Easter baskets and the gardening team was busy recycling wood chips
the revelations of Vanier and L’Arche’s origins have hit longtime staffers hard
though there is no questioning of the fundamentals of the mission
a 35-year veteran of L’Arche’s Il Chicco community and now on its leadership team
“For sure the investigation shocked all of us at the start,” said Moretti
adding that she now realizes Vanier epitomized a type of charismatic leader: “extreme in the good and in the bad.”
“What’s important is to not make a myth or idealize anyone
Such soul-searching was the order of business at the L’Arche leadership retreat a short distance away
It was held in a converted monastery in the hills overlooking Lake Albano
within view of the papal summer residence at Castel Gandolfo across the lake
now that it wasn’t just about helping disabled people as Vanier claimed
given the risk that Vanier’s methods trickled down to the next generation
How does L’Arche move forward with its unique spirituality
given Vanier’s writings were found to be problematic once details of his secret life were uncovered
the question we have is: Do we tell our story now
It’s a broken story,” said Stacy Cates-Carney
She said the revelations had “shattered” L’Arche’s understanding of its origins
Regular audits are now planned to ensure L’Arche’s safeguarding practices are being implemented
Reviews are under way to ensure staffers’ professional
personal and spiritual needs are being met appropriately
L’Arche staff are being given time to talk and process the revelations
“We’re in a stage of grief,” Cates-Carney said
people move through that really differently.”

Anita Ekberg, the acid-tongued Swedish film siren best known for her role in Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita, died on Sunday in Rocca di Papa, Italy, at age 83. Her attorney, Patrizia Ubaldi, confirmed the news on Sunday afternoon
Ekberg, who hailed from Malmo, Sweden, had been in an Italian hospital since the holidays as she battled a longtime illness, Ubalzi said. Prior to that she was staying briefly in an Italian care home after her villa was partially destroyed in a fire, BBC reports
The former actress had been in a wheelchair for the past several years since colliding with one of her Great Dane dogs and breaking her hip
Born Kerstin Anita Marianne Ekberg on September 29
Ekberg got her big break when she traveled to the U.S
at age 20 to compete in the Miss Universe pageant
after she had been crowned Miss Sweden in 1950
but just afterward signed with Universal Pictures
Her first role was as a resident of the planet Venus in 1953's Abbott and Costello Go to Mars
and then she went on to act in the John Wayne film Blood Alley
She acted alongside Audrey Hepburn in the 1956 adaptation of Tolstoy's War and Peace
in which she played Henry Fonda's adulterous wife Helene Kuragina
along with actresses Victoria Shaw and Dana Wynter
According to BBC
Her role as Sylvia Rank earned her international acclaim
and the sexually charged scene during which she and co-star Marcello Mastroianni swim in the Trevi Fountain is considered one of the most iconic in film history
The film received the Palme d'Or at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival and was an instant success
She and Fellini would work together again in 1962
Her acting career tapered off in the 1970s; her last project was a Fellini exhibition that opened in Amsterdam in 2013
Ekberg was married twice: first to English actor Anthony Steel, in 1955. The marriage dissolved in 1959, frayed by Steel's heavy drinking. In 1963 she married Rik Van Nutter, who appeared alongside Sean Connery in the Bond film Thunderball, according to The New York Times

the last phase of the FEI Driving World Championship 2022 will take place on Sunday afternoon in Rocca di Papa
It’s sure to be a thriller right down to the final seconds in the cones event
and after a few upsets over the last several days
Here’s a refresher on how the final day’s Combined Driving action will be scored
each athlete’s total score from the dressage and marathon elements will be carried forward to the final cones segment
and four horses will have to navigate a tight course in the arena
which if toppled by a horse or carriage gives penalty points to the driver.
Drivers can also pick up penalties for being over the time allowed
which on Sunday’s track will be 194 seconds
The faster the time and the fewer the penalties
the lower the total score at the end of each round
The athlete with the lowest score in the end wins the Individual championship title
and the team with the lowest combined points after the worst score is discarded will be awarded the Team gold.
holder of 12 Individual and Team medals at World Championships over the decades
The senior Chardon, whose son Bram Chardon is also on the leading Dutch team
is hoping to see the Netherlands relive their glory days at the top of the podium
a former winner of the FEI Driving World Cup™ on the indoor Driving circuit
will start the cones segment in eighth place
after his dressage score wasn’t what he’d hoped for and he didn’t make it up in the marathon.
The Chardons are joined by Koos De Ronde
who has won the indoor World Cup multiple times
The “Master of the Marathon,” as De Ronde is known
moved up into fifth place on Saturday and is well poised to be a threat in both the Team and Individual medal hunt.
Chester Weber
can’t be ruled out for a turn on the podium either
The 17-time American champion led the field after Day 1 of dressage and is lurking in fourth place
ready to put the pressure on the three above him.
Whilst the Orangemen are at the top of the Team leaderboard, they’re less than 4 points ahead of Germany, represented by Brauchle, Georg von Stein, and Mareike Harm
Harm rocketed to second place in the dressage phase after a harmonious and elegant test
Though she approached the marathon somewhat cautiously
another athlete who could return home with two medals in her grasp.
Saturday’s marathon was a shakeup for nearly everyone but Exell, who held onto his pole position from Day 2’s second dressage group. It doesn’t look like Team Australia will be a threat, with only two athletes and no discard score, but Belgium are knocking on Germany’s door in third place. The best of the Belgian finishes in the marathon put Glenn Geerts in seventh individually
ahead of teammates Dries Degrieck and Tom Stokmans.
but one can never say never in Driving.
A small error can snowball into high penalties or a slow time
Athletes and their four horses will have to be fast and precise
which necessitates a cool head and stellar human-to-equine communication in the ring.
Five points currently stand between Exell and Brauchle
with Brauchle just over a point above Ijsbrand Chardon
And Chardon is barely 2 points ahead of Weber
so the Individual fight will be a close one indeed.

ROME (Crux) – It is widely understood that Pope Francis is not a big vacation guy
preferring to spend his Summer in the Domus Sanctae Marthae where he lives
But as a heat wave breaks records across Europe
Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI decided to visit the cooler papal estate of Castel Gandolfo on Thursday
Four years had passed since the German pontiff left Vatican City
Pope Francis had invited him to the Summer residence of the popes in Castel Gandolfo
a small town distancing 1h from Rome that is perched atop a hill overlooking a lake
Emeritus Pope Benedict’s return was first reported by the local papers
glad to have a pope once more grace the town that was once favored at the Vatican
He arrived at Castel Gandolfo aboard a black Mercedes Station Wagon around 5pm and his first stop was at the pontifical residence
There he met with the staff and took a stroll in the gardens for about 90 minutes before setting off Rocca di Papa
another nearby small town that hosts the Marian Sanctuary of the Madonna di Tufo
known for its 15th century chapel and painting of the Virgin Mary
marks the spot where a local passerby claimed to have been saved from falling rubble by the intercession of the Madonna
Here Emeritus Pope Benedict prayed and greeted the local parish priest
even if he didn’t say much,” said a parishioner who happened to be present during the papal visit to the Italian news outlet Il Sismografo
but it was striking to see his fairly thin
very fragile physique and his severe difficulty in walking,” the source said
While it was heartening for people to see Emeritus Pope Benedict
the wheelchair that followed him around wherever he went served as a constant remainder of his advanced age
made sure that he was always well hydrated during his evening escapade
yet another small town in the Castelli Romani area
The Vatican’s press office confirmed the short papal visit on July 26
stating that Emeritus Pope Benedict returned to the Monastery of Mater Ecclesiae at the Vatican at 10:30pm and that he had been invited by the Bishop of Frascati

wonderful food and a road that seems to run in reverse
this curious spot is popular in Rome and Italian national TV reported about it
As with other 'anti-gravity hills' It looks like a normal street in the woods with a gentle slope
but if you pour water or put a ball on the pavement it seems to go uphill
When one walks on the hill one "can clearly feel that going uphill is much easier than going downhill." This of course should be a dead giveaway that something is amiss
If a blind man walked on this hill he would find it no stranger than any other hill
Like other gravity hills throughout the world
the same explanations are generally given: a deviation in gravity
magnetic effects caused by huge underground metal deposits
and in this case volcanic activity in ancient times
one which only affects those with sight
The effect is caused by the peculiar series of uphill and downhill stretches in which there is scarce or no view of the horizon
If one lays a level on the hill is shows that things are going downhill indeed..
However it seems that even computers can get it wrong
Recently it has been pointed out that according to Google Maps the height of a succession of points on the road shows that according to Google things are indeed going uphill in defiance of gravity
Things roll uphill on this Mexican street that seems to defy gravity
A mysterious spot where the laws of gravity seem not to apply
The strange phenomenon causing gravity to "work backwards" on this hill has been blamed on the paranormal
A haunted hill that supposedly defied gravity
an optical illusion makes cars seem to roll uphill
A spooky spot along the road where things mysteriously seem to move uphill by themselves
An optical Illusion once believed to be an electrical phenomenon
This strange hill on Old Fort Road where gravity works in reverse has been fascinating locals for years

Wednesday marked the 10 anniversary of the death of Chiara Lubich
the charismatic Italian Catholic lay woman who founded the worldwide Focolare Movement for spiritual and social renewal
in order to build a more united world based on respect and esteem for diversity.
at the movement’s headquarters at Rocca di Papa
while bombs were raining down on her home town
the 23-year old Lubich had a powerful religious experience
which led her to consecrate herself to God.
after St.Clare of Assisi. This date is considered the beginning of the Focolare movement
Through the Focolare (small communities of lay volunteers) she helped contribute to strengthening communion within the Catholic Church and initiated important work for Christian unity
interfaith dialogue and dialogue with contemporary culture
Today amongst its members are also many who profess no particular religion
Pope Benedict XVI had sent a message for Lubich’s funeral held in the Roman Basilica of St Paul’s Outside the Walls
describing her as a “woman of intrepid faith
a meek messenger of hope and peace”.
Speaking on the occasion of her 10th death anniversary
Cardinal Pietro Parolin recalled Lubich and her movement’s obedience and docility to the Church
even in very difficult times. He particularly highlighted her two contributions
While deepening and enlivening the Marian and apostolic character of the Church
so that “they all be one,” that the world may believe
she accomplished through love for one another just as Jesus taught us.
the Focolare Movement is present in 194 countries
and there are about 120,000 people who are part of its structures (members) and one and a half million people who adhere to it or sympathize with it

Fides news agency reported: "In a serene climate
at 2am in her home in Rocca di Papa (Rome)
where she had returned last night upon her wish
following her hospitalization at Policlinico Gemelli." With these words
an official release from Movimento dei Focolari announced this morning the death of its founder
hundreds of people went to her room to pay her their last respects
then stopped in meditation in the adjoining chapel and stayed around the house
It was an uninterrupted and spontaneous procession
started a movement of spiritual and social renewal the Focolare
During the Second World War among the poor in the city of Trent there began what Chiara herself calls
Today the movement has millions of affiliated persons in 182 countries
It brings together not only Catholics but also other Christians of more than 350 different communions
Hindus and persons with not religious membership
all committed to live and spread universal brotherhood to help build up the unity of the human family
Concrete initiatives include "cittadelle di testimonianza"
project for economy of communion involving over 750 companies who devolve part of their profit to the poor
on the Missionary Intention of the Holy Father for October 2002
may have the courage to announce Jesus' special love for the poor."
She wrote: "Love is the heart of the Gospel message
Christ himself demonstrated this with his words and works during his life on earth
This love is of a universal dimension which proposes as the law of life to all those who decide to follow Jesus: "Love your neighbour as yourself" (Mt 19,18; cf
what more are you doing than others?" (Mt 5,46-47) This love is typically Christian: a love which makes no distinction
like the love of our heavenly Father who "makes the sun shine on all
showed special love for the poor: he was concerned for all who suffered..
It is therefore particularly opportune to call attention to the place given to the poor in the life of Jesus
It is wonderful to underline that the poor were the first to receive his love and that the love we show to the needy will save us and allow us to share in the glory of the kingdom of heaven
as he himself promises when he speaks of the last judgement (cfr Mt 25
We must proclaim Christ's love for the poor
But for this proclamation to be effective every Christian must become poor..
This is the path that all Christians are called to walk
The Holy Father calls all Christians to commit themselves to new Evangelisation (Novo Millennio Inuente 40)
to proclaim with courage Christ's love for the poor
In this way we will be an example and stimulus for the world - so lacerated by all forms of violence and discrimination - so that between rich and poor countries there may be a more equal distribution of goods to ensure justice and peace."
Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor said: "I was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Chiara Lubich
and know that this inspirational woman will be greatly missed
Her life was one of exceptional service and devotion in response to the prayer of the Lord
She sought to incarnate the belief that love will transform the existence of every person
' 'We are all indebted to her work with the Focolare Movement
especially in building friendship between Christians and with people of other faiths
I offer my prayers and sincere condolences to all her family and friends.' 'May the Good Lord
whom she served so faithfully in this life
Dr Rowan Williams paid tribute Chiara Lubich
Dr Williams said that she had affected the lives of many Christians: "Chiara Lubich was one of the great figures of the modern Church
she set a new tone and a new agenda for the community life of many Christians
Her writings and teachings gave inspiration to hundreds of thousands and we lament her passing with very deep feeling
She was someone I had the privilege of meeting and I've had very fruitful contact over many years with the Focolare Movement who have been kind and supportive and inspirational to me in my own ministry
My heart goes out to them as they mourn Chiara's passing
I think we have seen in her one of the great lights of the present Christian generation."

Following on from the success of 2012’s inaugural Granfondo Campagnolo Roma, the series has expanded to encompass events in San Diego and New York this year. BikeRadar went back to the Eternal City to preview the route of this autumn’s Rome installment
a selection of the Italian capital’s roads will be closed for 7,500 riders to enjoy an unusual view of the sights
riders will be able to choose between two routes
both heading south-east out of the city past endless tourist attractions
As we rode through the giant Porta San Sebastiano gate
the Appian Way’s 2,000-year-old cobbles served as a wake-up call
A brief stop at the catacombs of San Sebastiano was cut short by torrential rain
so we pushed on to Castelli Romani and Lake Albano
the road began the first of the timed ascents – two on the shorter 100km Classico course
making a total of 1,469m or 2,415m of climbing on the respective routes
The climb to Rocca di Papa affords great views over Lake Albano
with Rome in the distance – although it’s long and has some technical corners
The town’s piazza and the steep climb leading from it recently featured in the new Roma Maxima pro race
which will partner with the granfondo in 2014
the Classico rejoining the Gran Fondo before the final timed ascent of Rocca Priora
Those taking on the full challenge will have to tackle the day’s toughest climb of Rocca Massima
it climbs 470m at an average of 5.7 percent
riders face a 40km+ descent back into the city
retracing the first 20km of the course and fighting it out for the finish back at the Colosseum start point
The Expo Village will be set up in historic chariot racing arena Circus Maximus
where there will be showers and a pasta party after the event
There will also be numerous feed zones in the various piazzas
likely featuring local produce and refreshments
as well as three traditional stops provided by the organisers
There’s even a kids’ village back at Circus Maximus
for families looking for entertainment while a parent takes on the ride
Time limits for both courses are set at a maximum of seven hours
and a broom wagon will collect stragglers or those who overindulge on the Italian hospitality en route
All starters will be obliged to wear the official Granfondo Roma jersey
making for a spectacular sight as traffic gives way to pedal power for the day
Our preview ride gave us a taste of the grandeur and beauty of the event, and if you’d like to find out more visit www.granfondoroma.com
VATICAN— Retired Pope Benedict XVI visited the hilltop town of Castel Gandolfo in his first visit to the papal summer residence in four years
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni confirmed the retired pope’s visit after a local newspaper
reported Pope Benedict arrived in the afternoon to the traditional papal summer residence in the town outside of Rome
made “a stop in the gardens for a walk and recited the rosary” before making his way to the nearby town of Rocca di Papa
where he visited the Marian shrine of Our Lady of Tufo
The Vatican said he then visited the neighboring town of Frascati and had dinner with Bishop Raffaello Martinelli before returning in the evening to his residence
the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican gardens
said he was present during Pope Benedict’s visit and that the retired pontiff left “a wonderfully serene impression.”
Pope Benedict is “a man who lives constantly in the presence of God
a saintly man who transmits that sense of God in a manner beyond his physical appearance
He does so with his eyes and his smile,” Msgr Torelli said
The 92-year-old retired pontiff previously visited Castel Gandolfo in 2015 when he spent two weeks at the papal summer villa
like many of his predecessors since the early 1600s

A married Focolarino – one of the first in the wake of Igino Giordani – Danilo along with his wife Anna Maria
would soon become the couple leading New Families at a world level; developing in the following decades an innovative and effective Family Pastoral Care appreciated at all latitudes for the rich spirituality from which it draws and for its openness to the demands of the contemporary world
The profound interior life of Danilo did not go unnoticed by ecclesiastical leaders who were struck by his brilliant presence
Diocesan President of Catholic men in Parma
when transferred to Rome he became consultant and
member of the Vatican department for the Family
made him a guest several times in the home of Pope Woijtila and also a testimonial of service to the Family in television broadcasts
When welcomed by Danilo during a visit (1984) to the International Centre of the Movement
the Polish Pontiff did not hesitate to promote him sympathetically as “Foreign Minister of the Focolare Movement “
A collaboration that also continued with Benedict XVI
and his request to the Zanzucchi couple to write the text for one of the Stations of the Cross (2012) at the Colosseum in Rome presided over by him was significant of this
Danilo is celebrating his 100th birthday with Anna Maria (90)

his 12 grandchildren and the whole Focolarino world
In particular with the countless families of the various continents for which with Anna Maria

Blessings: Father Martin Ignacio Gutierrez shakes hands with Pope Francis during a private meeting with the Pope and the new general administration and delegates of the Scalabrinian Fathers and brothers
prayer and the elderly were at the forefront of recent discussions between Pope Francis and New Farm parish priest Scalabrinian Father Martin Ignacio Gutierrez
at the time for the general chapter of the Scalabrinian Fathers
The Scalabrinians are an international community of religious serving migrants and refugees of different cultures
religions and ethnicities in 32 countries and on five continents
“We gather together to choose the new leader in the congregation and also we develop a kind of guidance for our next six years – what kind of work we want to do
the orientation we want to take,” Fr Gutierrez said
“During that gathering we had a private meeting with the Pope
“We introduced ourselves and the new general administration
and of course (the Scalabrinians) now have the blessing of the Pope for the next six years.”
Pope Francis emphasised the importance of a rich community life
“I appreciated when the superior general said that the Spirit calls you to experience among you communion in diversity
as testimony but first and foremost as a joy for you
“I also encourage you to continue the journey of sharing with the laity
facing today’s challenges together; as well as attending to permanent formation courses
Fr Guiterrez also asked the Pope for his blessing of all those in Australia
“It’s beautiful news that he gladly said yes,” Fr Gutierrez said
It was the first time Fr Gutierrez had met with the Pope – an exchange that left a lasting impression
“He asked all of us ‘Do you have a question for me?’
“He was so kind that every single comment or question we asked him
He reminded us to pray and to try and live in a simple manner
“He emphasised the beauty of promoting migrants
because our congregation is really to focus on migration
He invited us to respect and honour the seniors worldwide.”

An explosion that occurred yesterday in the small town of Rocca di Papa
The explosion in the Roman Municipality took place at around 11.15 am in a building near a nursery school
Moments before a strong smell of gas had been reported
Mayor Emanuele Crestini is among those seriously injured and is reported to have suffered burns to 35% of his body
A Council employee said that the mayor alerted everyone to leave the building and was in fact the last one to leave
A five year old girl and two of her class-mates were also seriously injured when they were hit by glass and other flying objects that were shattered during the explosion
While it remains unclear how the explosion occurred
it is believed to have been linked to underground works that were being carried out gas-pipes
An inquiry was launched in order to establish who was responsible

“We want to demonstrate that the Gospel can be lived on a social scale
by giving oneself entirely to the others and implementing those principles of justice and fraternity which we chose to abide by
on a path of the sharing of faith and life,” recounted Francesco Matterazzo
The town is structured into 12 family groups
Work is taken as an act of love for the other and the families are willing to take children into custody
Nomadelfia is a parish composed of families
single laity and priests who share an experience that recalls that of the first communities of the faithful
precisely a stone’s throw from the Etruscan-Roman town of Roselle
Fr Zeno Saltini started to gather abandoned children and raise them as sons
thus founding the Work of the Little Apostles
a young student who offered to act as mother to those children
Zeno entrusted the smaller children to her
launching a new consecration path in the Church
that of the “mothers by vocation.” With the end of the war
and were willing to gather the war orphans and raise them as their very own
the entire community approved the text of a Charter
which was signed at the altar: so the Work of the Little Apostles became Nomadelfia
the “nomadelfians” found a home suitable for the development of the community in the city of Grosseto
in a farm hold donated by the daughter of a renowned Italian businessman
“Our mission today has not changed,” explains Francesco Matterazzo
“In an ever more connected world that develops new instruments for communication and unity
there are other coexisting realities that deny the dignity of the other and build walls… this is why I think that the proposal of a path of fraternity is important for humanity more than ever
priests and singles can share a daily life more suitable for man with his natural aspirations for superior values like love
and socially richer due to the variety of experiences and age brackets.”

Germany’s Christoph Wahler and his 13-year-old grey gelding Carjatan S will be first into the arena as the Dressage gets underway at the FEI Eventing World Championship 2022 in Pratoni del Vivaro
There was just one withdrawal during the first horse inspection
Mexico’s Daniela Moguel and the mare Cecelia
A total of 89 horse/rider combinations from 26 countries will tackle the three-phase competition that will decide both Team and Individual medals over the next four days at this much-loved Italian venue
Germany was drawn first to go of the 16 teams
and with individual riders also interspersed
the drawn order is as follows (Teams marked with an asterisk):
The defending champions from Great Britain have a good draw, and Ros Canter
who won both Team and Individual gold last time around at Tryon
USA in 2018 will put the first British foot forward when entering the arena with Lordships Graffalo in the 13th starting spot tomorrow morning
Each team will field two combinations on Thursday and two more on Friday when the Dressage phase will conclude
send only Katrin Khoddam-Hazrati and Oklahoma 2 into action tomorrow afternoon while her compatriots will strut their stuff inside the boards on Friday.
Guiseppe della Chiesa’s cross-country course was opened on Wednesday
revealing 42 jumping efforts on his 30-fence track over a distance of 5,600 metres
The optimum time in which to get home is 9 minutes 50 seconds and as Great Britain’s Lucinda Green
1982 World Champion and twice European Champion
pointed out after her first look at the fences
this is a track that will need to be ridden “by feel” rather than on the clock
climbs and drops make it a roller-coaster from start to finish and included
an obstacle that has been constantly altered and reused since first built for the 1960 Olympic Games
Riders will walk the course several times over the next few days before the cross-country action begins on Saturday but first
they will want to perform well in the Dressage arena to place themselves prominently on the leaderboard
One young man who should be feeling confident is Switzerland’s Robin Godel who was individual winner with Grandeur de Lully CH while also helping his country to victory at the Test Event at Pratoni in May which was also the first leg of the FEI Eventing Nations Cup 2022 series
The Swiss were superb at this 4* NC-S event with Nadja Minder slotting into fifth individually with Toblerone while Melody Johner and Toubleu de Rueire finished eighth
and all three combinations are back in action again this week.
Their cross-country coach is Kiwi legend Andrew Nicholson who during his own spectacular career won every CCI 5* in the Northern Hemisphere and who won team gold at the 1990 World Championship in Stockholm (SWE)
Nicknamed “Mr Stickability” for the number of times he defied gravity and stayed onboard his horses in tricky situations he will have advised his squad how to ride the long and steep run down the combination KEP Italia Slide which is guaranteed to be one of the favourite viewing spots for spectators early on the course
Nicholson is also an idol for individual competitor Fouaad Mirza from India who will start 19th of the 45 runners in tomorrow’s first day of Dressage and who said today that his country will soon be a force to be reckoned with in the sport of Eventing
The 30-year-old who hails from Bangalore moved to Germany in 2017 and is based with German team member Sandra Auffarth who won double-gold at the FEI World Championship in 2014
He’s been riding the 16-year-old Seigneur Medicott for some years now and is confident that they will give a great account of themselves over the coming days
we’ve been to two Championships and we know each other very well”
a 5* not a 4* so it will test the partnership of horses and riders and the bond between them
It’s a difficult course but we are looking forward to tackling it!”
In the past seven world championships in Eventing
the eventual winning team has been placed either first or second after Dressage
It was Team New Zealand at the 1990 Stockholm World Championships that last defied this trend by starting in fifth place after Dressage
The on-form Swiss team have never started a world championship inside the top ten after Dressage and their best placing was ninth in Jerez (ESP) in 2002
But things can change and over the next few days
The camaraderie in this special equestrian sport is something very special and some British team supporters had a nice surprise last night
Andrew Nicholson was on the same flight from London and they offered him a ride in their taxi to Frascati
the town near Pratoni which is housing most of those visiting the event
That led to a dinner invitation the group will never forget
and they will by flying both the Swiss and British flags at the FEI Eventing World Championships 2022 this week as a result.
so don’t miss a hoofbeat of the FEI Eventing World Championship 2022

Thousands of Nigerian women could be expelled or left homeless as Salvini decree abolishes protective measures
Princess, 31, born among the muddy streets and shacks of Benin City, left everything to come to Italy in 2008
Now she is one of the thousands of women trafficked into the country who could soon find themselves on the streets
under a decree that cements the populist government’s hardline immigration stance
approximately 40,000 Nigerian women live in Italy
According to the Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI) thinktank
in the past four months Italy has rejected more than 1,000 asylum applications submitted by Nigerian women
while an estimated 1,134 have been refused humanitarian protection
Freeing girls trafficked to Italy for sex: ‘You will not be a slave for ever’ GuardianThe main element of the Salvini decree
named after the interior minister and leader of the far-right League
is the abolition of humanitarian protection for those who are not eligible for refugee status
After her parents died and she needed to support herself
Princess was told by traffickers that she would “find dignified work once in Italy”
For five years she was forced into prostitution in various Italian cities
The psychologists caring for her at a migrant welcome centre are aware of her ordeal and are providing counselling
Princess sought help from an aid organisation when she found out she was pregnant
she was transferred to the welcome centre in Castelnuovo di Porto
“I finally believed that I had found some stability
I thought I would have given birth to my child in that centre and that we would have been able to stay there
before formal passage of the Salvini decree
the bill was retroactively applied by the interior ministry
hundreds of migrants were evicted from welcome centres around the country
The evictions are not only affecting those whose request for protection on humanitarian grounds is pending approval
but also those in possession of permits to stay
despite the law stipulating that their status should be maintained
The first reception centre to be evacuated was in Isola di Capo Rizzuto in Calabria
“When the police came to tell us that we couldn’t stay there any more
I couldn’t believe my ears,” says 31-year-old Blessing
“They took all of our belongings and escorted us out
They have always been left alone in the world

She and 500 others were evicted from the refugee reception centre in Castelnuovo di Porto
“I was hoping to finally find some peace,” she says

or to centres managed by the aid group Caritas
The decree is supposed to grant victims of sex trafficking a form of protection because of the risks they may face if deported back to their countries of origin
they must report their captor to the police or enter a rehabilitation programme
“The majority of victims of trafficking are afraid of rebelling or of entering into psychological rehabilitation,” says Isoke Aikpitanyi
a trafficking survivor and founder of the anti-trafficking association Women of Benin City
they are simply Nigerian women with a humanitarian permit that the authorities will not recognise
Before they leave their homes, Nigerian women are made to undergo traditional oath-taking ceremonies involving complicated and frightening rituals. The widespread use of “juju” ceremonies in trafficking women from Nigeria to Europe leaves deep emotional scars.

a commission will decide whether to accept or deny her asylum request

“They forced me into prostitution for six years and now they could send me back to Nigeria where my madam is waiting for me

it also means facilitating the work of criminal organisations,” he says

Read on to discover the best restaurants in Dulwich.
With a golf club, art gallery, Georgian mansion and three wonderful parks, Dulwich is one of South London’s best-kept gems.
But, we’ll let you in on a secret – the food scene is why we love Dulwich so much.
The neighbourhood’s restaurants cover practically every culinary base, from Japanese and Georgian to Italian, British, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean, to name but a few.
Lordship Lane is a foodie’s paradise with around 15 to 20 restaurants within about a mile of each other – it’s the perfect place to launch your culinary adventure of Dulwich.
Read on to discover some of the best restaurants in Dulwich.

Pizza, pasta and warm, homely vibes, Rocca Di Papa is a sublime Italian spot and one of the best Dulwich Village restaurants.
The straightforward menu combines classic pizza and pasta dishes with some excellent insalata (salad), carne e pesce (meat and fish) and many other traditional and contemporary Italian dishes.
There’s a superb selection of starters for lighter bites, but be sure to check out the seasonal specials, too.
And, as expected from a stellar Italian joint – the wine list doesn’t disappoint, with plenty of vino to choose between.

We imagine there aren’t many restaurants situated inside a Georgian mansion. But, among some of the many excellent restaurants in Dulwich Village is 1785, a bar and restaurant inside Belair House.
The house is a popular wedding venue – we’re sure you’ll see why when you go.
The swanky interior is true to the home’s handsome exterior. The restaurant itself serves authentic north Indian cuisine from Monday to Saturday and a modern British menu on Sunday, including roast beef, lamb, chicken, nut Wellington and fish and chips.
Overall, an exquisite Indian restaurant, and Dulwich’s 1785’s unique setting only makes this spot more brilliant.

A sleek and modern bar and restaurant with an impeccable interior, siOn has earned itself some stunning reviews in a short space of time.
The cuisine here is dubbed Mediterranean fusion, and the menu is intriguing, with kebabs, wings and even KFC fried cauliflower. The cocktail menu is divine, and most are *reasonably* priced at £10 a pop, or thereabouts.
Among West Dulwich restaurants, siOn is truly unique and is well worth a visit for food, cocktails, or both (preferably both).

Park’s Edge Bar and Kitchen is a cosy, inviting spot located at the edge of Brockwell Park.
This restaurant’s stunning interior matches its superb brunch/lunch and dinner menus with classic dishes like steaks and shepherd’s pies. Meanwhile, the burger menu elevates old faves with the likes of a King Truffle Wagyu Burger and Lobster Royale Cheeseburger.
If you’re looking for something lighter, the brunch menu offers some excellent all-day-breakfast-style dishes like Morning Zen – a healthy omelette – and The Big Smoke, with hot smoked herring.

Megan’s offers a loosely Mediterranean and Turkish menu packed with mouth-watering dishes like open kebabs and grilled halloumi
Megan’s in the Hamlet leans towards the Middle Eastern portion of Mediterranean cuisine with warming
spicy and healthy dishes cooked with fresh ingredients and served in a beautiful
well-lit room with appropriate decor.
Coupled with Middle Eastern salads and seasoned chips
Megan’s is perfect for anyone looking for a little culinary escape to the Med.
Franklins has an apologetically British menu with dishes like pork belly, partridge, seabass and sirloin for mains, ham hock, rollmops and soup for starters and quintessential snacks like Welsh rarebit and Scotch Woodcock. The menu is extensively gluten and dairy-free, which we love.
This award-winning restaurant is warm and friendly and has delivered many years of service to the local areas. It’s still going strong today – which says a lot.

From British to Japanese cuisine without walking more than a few minutes down the road – Yama Momo is yet another superb restaurant down Lordship Lane, which hosts between 15 and 20 restaurants and cafes by our (incredibly accurate) estimations.
This one won’t need much selling to fans of Japanese cuisine with sashimi, sushi, nigiri and tempura. There are plenty of hearty mains like grilled sea bass, truffle tofu and rib-eye beef to sink your teeth into.
The chef’s special sushi rolls are always a winner, and there are plenty of appetisers, salads and sides. Easily one of the best Lordship Lane restaurants – and the competition is hot!

A no-brainer for purveyors of vegan and veggie cuisine.

Walter’s has already earned itself rave reviews with the promise of many more to come.
From the same duo, Matt & Rob, that opened Oystermen in the heart of Covent Garden, Walter’s delivers fresh dishes cooked with genuine, honest ingredients sourced from Britain’s land and sea.
The seasonal menu is well-represented with seafood like oysters and cuttlefish with mains like Barbary duck, and rosemary roasted lamb – DROOL. While the venue itself is wonderfully warm and modern.

Another sublime restaurant in East Dulwich’s Lordship Lane is the fantastic Kartuli.
If you’ve been so lucky to try Georgian food before, you might already know about dishes like khachapuri and khinkali. If not, it’s time to find out.
Kartuli’s menu is adorned with succulent dishes from Georgia’s unique corner of Europe, including a stunning wine list that comes with its own map of where each bottle is sourced from.
With its fantastic interior and friendly atmosphere, Kartuli is elevating the status of Georgian cuisine while providing Lordship Lane with yet another wonderful place to eat. One of the most exciting East Dulwich restaurants.
So, if you’ve been searching high and low for a Georgian restaurant, East Dulwich has you covered.
