The Lake Shore Central School District is proud to announce the worldwide publication of Champions of the Sky
a Symphonic Band work commissioned by High School Band Director
Eric Blodgett for the Lake Shore High School Band
This powerful and soaring piece was composed by internationally renowned composer and film orchestrator Rossano Galante
a Grand Island native with ties to the Lake Shore community and a long-standing friendship with Lake Shore Band Director Eric Blodgett
“This has been a dream in the making for many years,” said Eric Blodgett
Lake Shore Central Schools Music Department Chairman and High School Band Director
“I knew early on that I wanted to leave something lasting for our students
and excellence of the Lake Shore Band Program
Rossano was the perfect composer to bring that vision to life.”
The idea for this special commission began more than a decade ago when Mr
Blodgett set out to find the right composer to create a lasting musical legacy for the Lake Shore Band Program
After years of inviting top-tier composers to work with the band and watching the talent and dedication of his students grow
Blodgett turned to his college bandmate and University at Buffalo and USC graduate Rossano Galante
whose impressive resume includes film orchestration work on some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters
Galante was so inspired by his visit and the students he worked with during the spring of 2022
he rearranged his schedule to ensure that Lake Shore students could premiere the piece while still in high school — a rare honor
“Rossano worked with our high school and middle school bands
and our students made such an impression on him that he moved his projects around to make this happen sooner,” Blodgett said
“That’s how special our students and our program are
It’s something I’ll never forget.”
Blodgett and Galante shaped a piece that reflects the spirit and strength of Lake Shore students
incorporating musical elements that pay homage to the school’s mascot
inspiration came from one of their own — then-freshman Bailey Burke — who offered the title Champions of the Sky
a name that perfectly captured the piece’s majestic energy
“Rossano and I were really struggling with the title,” Blodgett admitted
“And then Bailey — just a freshman at the time — came up with Champions of the Sky
no royalties for Bailey or Lake Shore — but she’ll always know she named a piece that’s now part of band repertoire worldwide.”
The Lake Shore High School Band officially premiered Champions of the Sky at their 2023 Spring Concert
with Galante present to hear the final product of their collaboration
the true debut performance took place a few months earlier
when the band performed the piece at the OrlandoFest National Music Festival in Florida
where they took home the Grand Championship
“It was an incredible moment,” said Blodgett
“To see our students perform something that was written just for them — and then to win the Grand Championship at a national festival with that very piece — it was beyond anything I could have hoped for.”
Now published globally by Alfred Music Publishing and available through major retailers including J.W
Champions of the Sky will live on for generations
“This is a piece that will be played by high schools
and professional bands for years to come,” Blodgett said
That’s something really special.”
Each score and part of the piece sold will list the following: “Commissioned by the Lake Shore High School Bands
and Music Boosters for their years of dedication and service

A new study from UC San Diego’s Comparative Cognition Lab shows that dogs trained to use soundboards to “talk” are capable of making two-word button combinations that go beyond random behavior or simple imitation of their owners. Published in the journal Scientific Reports from Springer Nature, the study analyzed data from 152 dogs over 21 months
capturing more than 260,000 button presses — 195,000 of which were made by the dogs themselves
“This is the first scientific study to analyze how dogs actually use soundboards,” said lead researcher Federico Rossano, associate professor of cognitive science at UC San Diego and director of the Comparative Cognition Lab
“The findings reveal that dogs are pressing buttons purposefully to express their desires and needs
these sequences are not random but instead seem to reflect specific requests.”
The study observed that the buttons most commonly used were related to essential needs
with words such as “outside,” “treat,” “play,” and “potty.” Notably
combinations like “outside” + “potty” or “food” + “water” were used in meaningful ways
occurring more frequently than expected by chance
this research offers a new way to better understand their pets’ needs
“While dogs already communicate some of these needs,” Rossano said
“soundboards could allow for more precise communication
Instead of barking or scratching at the door
a dog may be able to tell you exactly what it wants
even combining concepts like ‘outside’ and ‘park’ or ‘beach.’ This could improve companionship and strengthen the bond between dogs and their owners.”
Data was collected via the FluentPet mobile app
where owners logged their dogs’ button presses in real time
The research team selected 152 dogs with over 200 logged button presses each to analyze patterns of use
were used to determine whether button combinations were random
The results showed that multi-button presses occurred in patterns significantly different from random chance
supporting the idea of deliberate communication
The researchers also compared dogs’ button presses to those of their owners and found that dogs were not simply imitating human behavior
buttons like “I love you” were far less frequently pressed by dogs than by their people
While the study provides evidence of intentional two-button combinations
Future investigations will explore whether dogs can use buttons to refer to the past or future—such as a missing toy—or combine buttons creatively to communicate concepts for which they lack specific words
“We want to know if dogs can use these soundboards to express ideas beyond their immediate needs
it would drastically change how we think about animal intelligence and communication.”

Sterling pushed forward and Quentin Rossano scored with nine minutes to play to lift Sterling to an improbable 2-1 NJSIAA Group 2 semifinal home win over Robbinsville
Sterling will face Harrison on Sunday at Franklin High School for the NJSIAA Group 2 title
down two men," Sterling coach Pete Marlys said
"We knew that we had to find moments to risk it
Reached during the team's post-game celebration at a local restaurant
Marlys can be excused for being a bit shaky on the details
the school district's inhouse television department posted the game online
Rossano's game-winner came two minutes after a red card was assessed for a foul outside the top of the Sterling penalty area
Robbinsville committed a foul 40 yards from the goal to set the events in motion
Ethan Weitzel sent the free kick wide left of the goal where Jesus Blanco headed it across the mouth of the goal and to the feet of Jason Camardo
As the defense looked to Camardo the ball found the foot of Rossano
it's a group of boys that were relentless in seeking a group goal," Marlys said
"The hard part about coaching soccer is you don't have time outs
"So much of the prep is done on the training ground
Who prepares to play down two men in a state semifinal
but you trust that the players understand the game to a level
that they sort of know how to approach it moving forward
Sterling had to survive nine more minutes without surrendering a game-tying goal
"You don't see it often in high school soccer
and they're essentially forced to allow a team to enter their zone and play balls in the box," Marlys said
made two massive saves in the last 10 minutes
We pride ourselves on our culture at Sterling
As improbable as the game-winning goal was
just getting back to even was a near-miracle
And that's not even considering that Robbinsville failed to convert on two penalty kicks
a Silver Knights player was assessed his second yellow card
meaning Sterling would complete the game with no more than 10 players the rest of the way
a Bright John try hit the post but went to Rossano
Jason Camardo cleared a loose ball away from the keeper but a Ravens defender cleared it right to the foot of Carson Wiley
The Silver Knights had no conception that things would only get stranger

The combination of tenor-saxophonist Harry Allen
and drummer Bryan Carter (who takes an occasional vocal) is certainly a hit throughout their new It Takes 3 CD
who has long since joined Scott Hamilton at the top of the last few decades’ swing tenors
and Sportiello (a master at swing and stride) can always be relied upon to provide rewarding music
The lesser-known but talented Carter provides background fireworks and colorful interaction with the two lead voices
Whether it is “Runnin’ Wild,” “Exactly Like You,” “It’s You Or No One,” or the swing era hit “It Seems I Heard That Song Before,” the trio creates plenty of swinging excitement
Sportiello (“It’s Sunny In Cape Cod”) and Allen (“Each And Every Yesterday”) contribute an original apiece and the trio jams happily on Arnett Cobb’s “Kathy’s Blues.”
This recording is as enjoyable as one would expect which means that anyone interested in spirited mainstream jazz simply has to get a copy

The study is the first empirical paper to emerge from the world’s largest longitudinal project on button-trained pets led by UC San Diego
If you’ve seen those viral social media videos of dogs using soundboard buttons to “talk,” you’re not alone
These buttons have taken the pet world by storm
leading to impressive and sometimes seemingly miraculous feats shared across platforms like TikTok and Instagram
or are they just responding to cues from their owners
this is the first empirical study emerging from the world’s largest longitudinal project on button-trained pets
Rossano, who is also featured in the popular new Netflix documentary “Inside the Mind of a Dog,” emphasizes that this research is just one step in his lab’s ongoing investigation of interspecies communication
Key findings: The study shows that dogs trained to use soundboards responded appropriately to words like “play” and “outside,” regardless of whether the words were spoken by their owners or triggered by pressing a button
as well as whether the buttons were pressed by the owner or an unrelated person
This suggests that dogs are not merely “reading” their owners’ body language or presence but are indeed processing the words
“This study addresses public skepticism about whether dogs truly understand what the buttons mean,” said Rossano
“Our findings are important because they show that words matter to dogs
and that they respond to the words themselves
The research involved two complementary experiments
with researchers visiting 30 dogs’ homes across the country to test their responses to soundboard buttons
The second experiment utilized citizen science
where 29 dog owners conducted the trials themselves at home under remote guidance
The study’s methodology was rigorously pre-registered
and analysis plans before any data was collected
reduces the risk of cherry-picking results
and aligns with a growing movement in cognitive science and psychology to increase scientific rigor and reduce the likelihood of bias or fraud
“We’re just scratching the surface in this study
Future studies explore how dogs actively use these buttons
including the meaning and systematicity behind sequences of button presses
Our research underscores the importance of studying animals in their home environment
providing a more ecologically valid understanding of their abilities.”
ongoing research project involving thousands of participants worldwide
Upcoming research will delve deeper into how dogs spontaneously use soundboard buttons
further illuminating the complexities of dog cognition and communication
The paper’s first author is Amalia Bastos
a former postdoc at UC San Diego now a postdoc at Johns Hopkins University
The study was also conducted in collaboration with researchers from UC Davis
and the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna
The study data was collected in 2022 during the Omicron surge of the COVID-19 pandemic
with participants generously opening their homes to researchers

SAN DIEGO — If you’ve ever wished your dog could tell you exactly what they want instead of barking at the door, science has good news. A study analyzing how dogs use the app “FluentPet” reveals that dogs can learn to “talk” using soundboards — and they’re doing it with remarkable intentionality
The research represents the first scientific study to analyze how dogs use communication soundboards
Conducted by scientists from the University of California San Diego’s Comparative Cognition Lab and Johns Hopkins University
the team analyzed data from 152 pet dogs who used the communication devices in their homes
These soundboards, which have gained significant popularity on social media, consist of buttons that play pre-recorded human words or phrases when pressed. The scope of the study was impressive: researchers examined over 260,000 button presses over 21 months, with 195,000 of those presses made by the dogs themselves
“This is the first scientific study to analyze how dogs actually use soundboards,” explains Federico Rossano, associate professor of cognitive science at UC San Diego and director of the Comparative Cognition Lab, in a statement. “The findings reveal that dogs are pressing buttons purposefully to express their desires and needs, not just imitating their owners
these sequences are not random but instead seem to reflect specific requests.”
To understand how these soundboards work in practice, consider a dog who needs to go outside to relieve itself. Rather than simply barking or scratching at the door – traditional ways dogs communicate their needs – dogs using soundboards can press specific buttons to convey their precise intentions
The study found that combinations like “outside” + “potty” or “food” + “water” occurred more frequently than random chance would predict
The research team collected this data through the FluentPet mobile app
where owners logged their dogs’ button presses in real time
they focused on dogs who had made at least 200 recorded interactions
Using advanced statistical methods and computer simulations
the researchers could determine whether button combinations were random
One particularly fascinating finding emerged when researchers compared dogs’ button choices to those of their owners. The analysis revealed that dogs weren’t simply copying their humans’ patterns. For instance, while humans frequently pressed the “I love you” button
suggesting they were making their own distinct choices about which buttons to press
The most commonly used buttons related to essential needs and desires, with words such as “outside,” “treat,” “play,” and “potty” topping the list
Of the nearly 195,000 recorded dog button presses
about 29% were combinations of multiple buttons
indicating that dogs weren’t just making simple
one-word requests but potentially attempting more complex communications
What makes this study particularly compelling is that these patterns emerged despite each dog’s soundboard being unique in terms of button placement and available words
This suggests that dogs were truly learning to associate specific buttons with their desired outcomes
rather than just pressing whatever was convenient
the research team has even more ambitious goals
“We want to know if dogs can use these soundboards to express ideas beyond their immediate needs
it would drastically change how we think about animal intelligence and communication.”
From basic commands to button combinations, dogs continue to push the boundaries of interspecies communication
The question is no longer whether dogs can learn to “talk” to us
but rather: what will they tell us when we give them the right tools to speak
The researchers collected data through a mobile application where dog owners reported button presses made by both their dogs and themselves
whether watching live or reviewing recorded videos
The data was organized into broad concept categories (for example
“kibble,” “dinner,” and “food” were all grouped under “FOOD”)
The team then used sophisticated statistical models to analyze the patterns of button presses
looking at both individual buttons and two-button combinations
dogs’ button presses weren’t random – they showed consistent patterns that differed from what you’d expect by chance
certain two-button combinations appeared more frequently than others across different households
there was only a minimal correlation between which buttons dogs pressed and which ones their owners used
suggesting dogs weren’t simply copying their humans
which could introduce bias – owners might be more likely to report “interesting” button presses than mundane ones
the study only included dogs with significant soundboard experience (200+ interactions)
so the results might not represent all dogs’ potential ability to use these devices
The research also couldn’t definitively determine whether dogs understood the meanings of the words they were triggering
The research suggests that dogs can use soundboards deliberately and shows that their button pressing isn’t just random or imitative
This opens up new questions about canine cognitive abilities and the potential for human-animal communication
Future research will need to investigate whether dogs truly understand the meanings of the buttons they press and whether they’re using them with communicative intent
The research was supported by the Johns Hopkins Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program
Two of the authors previously consulted for CleverPet
a company that produces these communication devices for pets
The data was obtained through a data sharing agreement between CleverPet

Study described as ‘necessary first step’ in discovering whether dogs and humans can use push-button devices to communicate
It has become a hot-button topic among dog lovers: can humans and canines communicate with each other using a soundboard
Now researchers say they have taken the first steps towards finding out
revealing that dogs trained to use such devices respond to the pre-recorded words just as they do to spoken words
“Here we show that actually [dogs] do pay attention to the [soundboard] words and they produce appropriate behaviours independently of environmental cues and who produces the word,” said Prof Federico Rossano
“While this study is most certainly not mind-blowing
The uptake of push-button soundboards has boomed in recent years, with social media awash with videos of canines such as Bunny using the equipment
But debate has swirled over whether such dogs are really responding to audio from the device
or simply reacting to cues based on their owners’ behaviour or body language
Rossano and colleagues report how they carried out two experiments involving a total of 59 dogs
all of whom had been trained to use a soundboard
a researcher used coloured stickers to cover the buttons on a dog’s soundboard pre-recorded for the words out/outside
unaware of which button was which and unable to hear the words they produced
Dog owners then carried out a similar experiment
but in this case they varied between pressing one of the buttons or saying the word themselves
The results reveal that the odds of the dogs displaying play-related behaviours was about seven times greater after the play/toy button was pushed than average for the three buttons
with similar levels of appropriate behaviour for the out/outside buttons
they showed no greater chance of showing food-related behaviours when the corresponding button was pushed
the findings held regardless of whether a researcher or owner pressed the buttons
and whether their owner pressed a button or spoke the same word
The researchers are now studying whether dogs can push the correct button for specific situations
work that they say could not only help probe the depth of the canines’ word comprehension but also shed light on whether such devices can be used for humans and dogs to communicate with each other
the director of the Canine Science Collaboratory at Arizona State University
described the new study as a “nothing burger”
noting that the main finding was that dogs responded to certain verbal cues
“There is nothing remarkable about that,” he said
adding that the team only studied responses to three familiar words – and the dogs were only successful on two of them
Wynne said the fact that the dogs had been trained to press buttons played no role in the current study
while the research did not shed new light on what dogs understood when certain words were spoken
said the study laid the groundwork for future research and showed – contrary to some suggestions – that the dogs were indeed responding to the audio from the buttons rather than cues from their owner
“They really needed to show this,” she said
“And now I think the community of scientists is waiting for the rest that’s going to be exciting.”

An article in the February 2021 issue of DOWNBEAT Magazine had this to say about the individual who will be the recipient of the 2024 Jazz Legend Award at the annual San Diego Jazz Party in Del Mar
pianist Rossano Sportiello had mastered the repertoire of trad jazz from Jelly Roll Morton and Dixieland to Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller
He did all this while growing up in Northern Italy
learning from records and playing in European jazz bands beginning when he was 16
“Rossano was drawn to jazz primarily because of the trad style and the possibilities he heard in the freedom of improvisation
and hearing improvisation was a revelation to him
Exploring music styles beyond trad and stride is an ongoing source of inspiration
and he incorporates all he has learned into his own playing.”
“I met Barry Harris (New York’s dean of bebop pianists) when I was 26 and was so inspired to hear him play
Jazz is a beautiful way of expressing yourself.’” Rossano cites Hank Jones for teaching him a valuable lesson “that you don’t have to bang the instrument to swing
and that you can play softly with a couple fingers and still swing.”
Trombonist-arranger Dan Barrett recalls his first encounter with Rossano
a charming resort town located on Lake Maggiore near the Swiss-Italian border
which annually hosts what is billed as Europe’s largest hot jazz festival
One evening Dan was invited to sit in with an Italian big band that had a young man at the piano whom he had not met
When the pianist finally had a chance to solo
and he took the band to another whole level
some of the best and most exciting I’d ever heard
Dan kept in touch with Rossano after that introduction
occasionally sending pieces of music he thought might be of interest
recruited him to play in an American all-star group that he was leading
the late Mat Domber of Arbors Records invited Rossano to perform at that year’s “March of Jazz” in Clearwater
For seven years (1993-2000)
Rossano toured Europe as a member of the Milano Jazz Gang
playing the San Francisco style of jazz associated with Lu Watters and Turk Murphy
when she was singing in a Barry Harris choir and who now works as a writer at the United Nations in New York City
There are no musicians in Rossano’s immediate family
Their son was attracted to the piano at an early age and by the age of eight was taking lessons from a next-door neighbor
he came under the tutelage of classical pianist Carlo Villa
a relationship that continued until Rossano’s 1996 graduation in classical piano from the local conservatory at the age of 22
Rossano refers to the late Ralph Sutton as “his Spiritual Father.” However, he feels his own style is a composite of all the great jazz piano players. “I like them all, and they all have much to offer. I don’t try to play exactly like Teddy Wilson because I cannot be somebody else
Rossano displays a deep understanding of classical piano idioms and could very well be a first-class concert pianist in the classical world
During his studies at the Milan Conservatory of Music
he learned how to compose and how to orchestrate for a symphony orchestra
He also is an excellent teacher and has been a guest instructor at clinics and jazz workshops both here in the United State and in Europe
His first solo recording in 2003 was In the Dark
where the liner notes gave a phonetic pronunciation of his name: Ro-SAH-no and “Sporty fellow” and offered the following description of the artist:
“Rossano is a modest and courteous young man
with a slender build that’s just perfect for the Italian suits and jackets in which he performs
He has dark brown hair and wears a closely-trimmed beard and rim glasses that accent an already scholarly appearance
His smile is like the Cheshire cat’s: ear-to-ear
for he laughs a lot and has a wry sense of humor.”
During the 18 months of “down time” during the Pandemic
he began streaming weekly concerts from his New York City apartment that attracted listeners from all over the world
He gave private lessons and accepted commissions to compose original songs requested by fans to celebrate birthdays
Over 100 of the “Live at the Flat in Greenwich Village” series are currently available on-line
his mother and grandmother insisted he know to operate a sewing machine
a talent he put to good use making face masks for family and friends during the pandemic
He went on to say that he became more technologically involved with the Internet and Social Media and feels it resulted in his becoming more productive and busier than before
He’s played with most of the current jazz luminaries and become a regular on the jazz party and festival circuit throughout the world
He currently spends 60 percent of his time performing in Europe where a majority of his performances are as a member of The Three Wise Men trio along with Dutch saxophonist Frank Roberscheuten and Austrian drummer-vibraphonist Martin Breinschmid
I feel I’m always learning something.” In line with his crossover ability (like Benny Goodman)
he has three CDs where he plays classical compositions by Chopin
“Rossano’s beautiful touch and elegant ideas immediately attract the listener
for a brilliant career.” (Rossano will be 50 on June 1
Rossano states his overriding goal is to play jazz and make it understandable to everybody
he wants to see people smiling and having fun

ShareSaveLifestyleTravelMeet Rossano Ferretti, The Man Behind The $1500 Haircut And "The Method"ByKatie Chang
With over 20 salons in the most sought-after locations worldwide
Even though I’ve been in the beauty business for years – whether through selling products at my old apothecary in Brooklyn
or writing about the subject – I’ve always adopted a less-is-more philosophy
My makeup routine is virtually non-existent
(The only thing I tend to on a daily basis are my brows
and I do love the occasional bright lip.) As you’d expect
I don’t use a dryer (unless it’s literally freezing out)
or do anything to muss with my hair’s natural
styling products are banned in my bathroom
(But I’ll dab the tiniest bid of pomade along my part to tame frizz and flyaways)
The Rossano Ferretti Hairspa is located on the 19th floor in the Fuller Building in New York City...
But, when I received an email invitation to see world renowned stylist Rossano Ferretti at his new Rossano Ferretti Hairspa in the Fuller Building
I politely say no when invited to try out other stylists
Ferretti is responsible for one of the most innovative haircutting techniques to date
called “The Method.” (In short: it involves patented texturizing scissors that snip about 12% less hair than traditional ones.) And though I’m not one to hawk celebrity beauty
I couldn’t help but think of his salons' devoted clients
and Reese Witherspoon – all of whom could easily double as hair models
(Though a cut with one of his highly-trained stylists is more affordable
stylists and colorists stacked on top of each other
or anything else that could potentially detract from the tranquil
The Rossano Ferretti Hairspa is flooded with natural light
double-breasted wool blazer – which he designed himself – and his enviable ability to layer
After a thorough shampoo – which really felt more like a heavenly mind massage – Ferretti escorted me to a private nook
where together we leafed through a glossy book highlighting the history of his work and namesake salons
(His mini empire now includes 20 salons all over the world.)
It was then he asked me: “What do you want me to do?”
Though it had been a couple months since my last cut
So I thought a few inches off would make it look tidier
it didn’t take long for Ferretti to sense how surprised I was with his response
you shouldn't have to pay a stylist to ask you want you want
I create beauty around what nature gives you
to give you a haircut that’s right just for you.”
I wasn’t up for a debate.) He proceeded to cut my hair
He just sort of shook it and let if fall naturally
he used his upper body to really move with my hair
I found myself mesmerized and quieted by Ferretti’s graceful flow
this was the most unusual haircut I’d ever experienced.)
in the end (and price aside): one of the most beautiful
was when I returned to my regular routine the next day
all these “invisible" layers created by Ferretti’s patented scissors left my hair bouncier than ever
Which got me thinking: shouldn’t every haircut look beautiful in its most natural (by natural
shouldn’t they be used to enhance your look
shouldn’t a cut look great long after you leave a salon
As it turns out: the biggest takeaway from my experience with Ferretti is something I’ve believed in all along
The Rossano Ferretti Parma collection is inspired by Rossano Ferretti’s quest to enable each woman’s..
[+] unique inner beauty to be revealed through naturally beautiful hair
If composer and conductor Rossano Galante decided to remake an R&B classic, he might choose Aretha Franklin’s “Respect.” It’s a song that commands what he firmly believes concert band music deserves.
Galante, who’s conducted orchestras and concert bands, including the Coachella Valley’s own Desert Winds Freedom Band, returns to Palm Springs in early November for an event that spotlights concert bands. He’ll lead two groups of LGBT musicians in performing several compositions — one of which he wrote, “San Andreas Landscapes,” inspired by the Coachella Valley. (Listen to part of "San Andreas Landscapes" below)
The performances are planned as a Pride Concert during the Lesbian and Gay Band Association’s annual conference, a five-day gathering that encompasses Greater Palm Springs Pride weekend.
Galante recently chatted with Desert Outlook about why Palm Springs appeals to him as a gay man, his process of composing music, and living the ultimate dream.
I started teaching myself to compose when I was probably in seventh or eighth grade. At that time I was a trumpet player and I was teaching myself how to play piano.
What was your very first composition about?
OK, well I was in middle school and it was the worst thing you could ever imagine. It basically sounded — you know when an orchestra is tuning up? That’s what it sounded like. I had about 20 kids come over. It was really fun, but it sounded horrible. They all loved it. They said, “Keep going.”
I currently have 23 published compositions. I’ve written more than that, probably an extra 10.
Congratulations on “San Andreas Landscapes,” the composition inspired by the Coachella Valley. What’s been the reaction to the music here in Palm Springs?
I’ve gotten a lot of positive reactions from the musicians who played the ensemble. The publishers loved the piece. It should be released in the fall.
You’ve done a lot of music for film, which probably is why “San Andreas Landscapes” sounds and feels cinematic to me. What’s your process when creating music that isn’t for a film, from initial idea to finished composition?
That’s a tough one. When someone commissions me I ask them to give me a little bit of background about what they’re looking for. The process is not easy. It’s all emotional. When I sit at the piano, I try to grab myself emotionally with the music I’m composing. I have to be emotionally moved. My process is coming up with melodic ideas.
You’re going to participate in November at the LGBA Conference (Lesbian and Gay Band Association) in Palm Springs. What are you most looking forward to at the event?
The best part for me is standing up in front of the ensembles, getting to know them, to work with them, to rehearse, to make the music sound as great as we can make it sound. And, of course, getting to know the musicians. There will be 300 of them.
What will be your role in the LGBA 2016 Pride Concert?
There’s two concert bands. I’ll be conducting two pieces for one band, “San Andreas Landscapes” and “Landscapes.” I’ll conduct one for the other band, “God’s Country.” There will be other guest conductors.
Do you have a ritual or anything you do before a performance?
No, but I do get very nervous, not so much rehearsing and working with the musicians. Once I walk on the stage and turn my back to the audience and start, the nerves go away.
I understand that a wind band and an orchestra are two different things. In your view, what are wind bands better suited to that orchestras aren’t?
If you take a traditional concert band piece and you put in an orchestra, it often works. But there’s a fullness to a wind ensemble. Strings are very transparent; with a wind group, you have to be careful to make it transparent along with its largeness and heaviness. I like the reediness with a concert band. I love both ensembles equally. Writing for strings is very different than writing for a concert band.
Who’s the most underrated composer, someone whose work you wish everyone knew?
That is a tough question. Percy Grainger was a pretty big concert band composer. He should be more famous in general for orchestra. Honestly, in general, concert band composers should be regarded just as much as orchestra composers. Concert band music needs to be more respected because there’s some great stuff out there.
In a way, I’m kind of living my dream being a published concert band composer and getting out there and guest-conducting my music. At first I thought I wanted to be John Williams, but I’m not. He’s a genius. Then, I tried film composing. I’d say I’m living my dream and I’m extremely happy and blessed. I’m where I want to be in my life. I just want to keep getting better and growing as a composer.
Why should our readers attend the Pride concert?
The great music that will be performed. Palm Springs is a great place to be. I think Palm Springs has a great sense of community. I love it there. Being a gay man, the first time I went there I felt like I was at home. Growing up in Buffalo, I had to keep my lifestyle under wraps. It wasn’t easy.
I just finished a commission for four clarinets with the Air Force ensemble. It was very challenging for me. I’m used to writing for a large group. And the next commission I start up in September, and that’s for a full concert band.
Is there anything more you want readers to know, anything I didn’t ask?
I am incredibly honored to be chosen as one of the guest composers and conductors. I don’t take anything for granted.

use products and techniques that enhance it
Ferretti recommends his brand’s Favoloso Perfect Curls Enhancing Serum—they define the curls more without weighing them down
he adds: use the highest-quality products you can find
rich serum can work wonders with controlling frizz
“Avoid vigorous rubbing with a towel after washing your hair
gently pat your hair dry with a microfibre towel or an old T-shirt
Protect your hair from environmental stressors such as sun
Use products with UV protection and antioxidants
always protect your hair with a heat protectant

“The high humidity in Hong Kong can lead to hair problems like frizz and dryness, so choose a proper haircare routine that is personalised to your hair type,” says Ferretti
Those dealing with dryness and frizz can use a lightweight hair mask
like Rossano Ferretti Dolce Nourishing Mask
incorporating a leave-in conditioner or an anti-frizz serum can further protect the hair from moisture in the air
“The most common haircare mistake that people make is over-washing their hair”
“This can strip the hair of its natural oils.”
Use scalp oils to strengthen the hair from its roots
which can weigh the hair down and diminish its natural vitality
neglecting regular trims leads to split ends and uneven hair growth
One needs to consider the natural flow and movement of the hair
ensuring the haircut complements the unique facial structure and accentuates one’s natural beauty
one can also add volume to the hair without taking drastic measures
What’s important is to invest in the right haircut and then to maintain the groomed look with the right products,” says Ferretti
