Alizé Rubiera was focused on graduating from community college and had never heard of George Mason University’s ADVANCE Program until she received an e-mail that changed her life last fall For Rubiera, this program was the catalyst that led to the 19-year-old Fredericksburg native to transfer from Germanna Community College to George Mason to begin her junior year she is proudly poised to become the first person in her family to earn a college degree ADVANCE, part of the Mason Virginia Promise (MVP) initiative is a collaborative partnership between George Mason University and several Virginia community colleges designed to enhance the transfer experience for community college students pursuing a bachelor's degree These partnerships offer significant cost savings a simplified admission and financial aid process all while benefiting from the support of a dedicated advisor to ensure success with no loss of credits George Mason’s partnership with Germanna Community College in Fredericksburg, Virginia, was announced in June 2022 “It feels amazing,” Rubiera said of her eventual graduation and I feel like I’m motivating and inspiring my brothers and sisters I want them to see that we can do this—that we’re allowed to go to college and have the same opportunities as everyone else.” The second-youngest of five children, Rubiera, is majoring in criminology, law and society, with aspirations of becoming a criminal defense attorney. Due to graduate in spring 2026, she chose George Mason not only for its criminology program, but also for its diversity Rubiera is among the many new faces on the Fairfax Campus and is notably the first ADVANCE MVP student to transfer to George Mason after completing two years at community college “Alizé is an MVP trailblazer,” said Rita Alcala, associate director of the Office of Community College Partnerships at George Mason “Her story and recent transition to George Mason underscore the ADVANCE Program’s importance and its ongoing impact through its extended partnerships and streamlined admissions and matriculation processes ADVANCE and its partners help make a bachelor’s degree more accessible to community college students across Virginia.” Rubiera’s story is common among Virginia community college students seeking a better life as 64% of ADVANCE students identify as first-generation college students Currently 60 students are enrolled in the ADVANCE MVP Program across its five extended partner institutions, outside of the flagship institution partnership with Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) with more students expected to enroll this coming academic year George Mason officials expect at least one more ADVANCE MVP extended partnership student to transition to its Fairfax Campus in Spring 2025 Overall, 66% of Virginia Community College System students now have access to ADVANCE at their respective community colleges Rubiera credits her ADVANCE advisor, Dana Brantley for being invaluable support throughout the transfer process “She was always reliable whenever I needed guidance,” Rubiera said “Having an advisor who is available when you’re unsure or confused is crucial It all started with an unexpected e-mail nearly a year ago “That e-mail provided me an opportunity that I am extremely grateful for,” Rubiera said The following is an extended version of the story that appears in our latest print edition The viewing and wake for Pamela Alcántara Rubiera an alleged fatal victim of domestic violence at the New Life Outreach International Church at 2757 Morris Avenue in Kingsbridge Heights the cause of which was homicidal asphyxiation according to evidence presented in court by the Bronx District Attorney’s office on Saturday Among the politicians present at Alcántara Rubiera’s funeral service were Dominican Consul General Jesús Vásquez Martínez and Congressman Adriano Espaillat (NY-14) Bronx borough director for the mayor’s community affairs unit Pastor and the former councilman for District 14, Fernando Cabrera, who, as reported is once again running for his old city council seat were in tears at the service and consoling each other Hispanic clergy organization was also in attendance we asked Cabrera how the victim’s family was coping “The family’s in distress,” he said I’ve been here with her since she arrived [at the church for the viewing ceremony] She took ten minutes to be alone with her daughter by herself when the casket arrived and she’s a woman of faith.” Both the victim’s parents live in the Dominican Republic “I have to tell you she gave us a speech where her anchor and her hope is in her faith She lost two daughters in a span of eight months She’s grieving; she’s in mourning.” Cabrera explained that the grieving mother’s other daughter had died of dengue a disease similar but different from malaria caused by a virus spread through mosquito bites Sunilda Rubiera and Manuel Antonio Alcántara and other family members were seated in front of her semi-open A wreath adorned with flowers and blue ribbons was seen at the foot of the casket along with the words “Mami will always love you” in Spanish Members of Las Hermanas de Apoyo (The Support Sisters) a group which exists to support women affected by domestic violence they appeared to form a type of unofficial guard of honor around the church entrance which saw moving musical accompaniment throughout it was announced that another new organization is to be launched in memory of the young Dominican It will have the Spanish acronym “P.A.R.A.,” meaning “S.T.O.P.” in English and will incorporate the first letter of the victim’s first name (Pamela) Before the victim’s body was discovered, in a video of an earlier press conference held with friends and family members on March 5 organized with DM Noticias in front of Alcántara Rubiera’s building holding missing person fliers with a photo of Alcántara Rubiera were first heard saying in unison and in Spanish “We are asking for the community’s support!” “I don’t know if it was because he was desperate to see that she [Alcántara Rubiera] was actually moving out As reported during Perez Diaz’s arraignment at Bronx Criminal Court on March 8 prosecutors spoke of how Alcántara Rubiera had indeed planned to leave her abuser a step which domestic violence experts say frequently triggers a violent reaction from abusers The court also heard that Perez Diaz had been “secretly recording” the victim and that Alcántara Rubiera’s body had been found with bruising to the neck The prosecution alleged Perez Diaz was the only person to enter and exit the couple’s apartment after her last sighting Prosecutors outlined how neighbors tried to contact her after her disappearance but couldn’t get inside her apartment The prosecution also alleged Perez Diaz “lied” to neighbors about her disappearance and allegedly gave false information about his girlfriend’s whereabouts Of the pain the victim’s mother was experiencing “You can imagine the trauma that she’s going through right now the loss; it’s complicated.” He explained that it was not only the grief of losing her daughter but losing her in such a traumatic way that was extra hard we call it complicated grieving because it’s not the usual way,” he said We had even elected officials that came out here today for support and the clergy have been amazing in really providing her support Her mom wanted this service not to be in a funeral home She wanted it to be in church and that’s what we had here.” Alcántara Rubiera’s own church part of the Liberty Fellowship Deliverance Ministries is located on White Plains Road in Wakefield “We are both part of the same Chaplain association the Latin American Chaplain Association,” Cabrera said “I gave a speech when she graduated ironically but we have different local churches but we’re in the same family we’re always just talking to the pastor of her church.” Asked if Perez Diaz’s arrest had brought some comfort to the family and mentioned that the news was announced as they had gathered together on the previous Friday night we have to go through the process of the wheels of justice That’s one thing that she’s very adamant about that there won’t be unnecessary delays.” it speeds up the legal process and can save the victim’s family some of the trauma of revisiting the violent death of a loved one in a courtroom setting A not guilty plea prolongs the legal process and generally has the opposite affect on a victim’s family Asked if the Alcántara Rubiera’s mother had had doubts about her daughter’s partner prior to her body being discovered “I don’t know.” Given his decision to run for elected office once again could the City and State do to address and stop domestic violence “I think that we need to be more in the media,” he said “I think that the City could spend more funding and being able to get the message out on social media or whether it’s regular media “They’re finding themselves in a situation that there’s no way out and usually there’s a cycle that comes with domestic violence and that this could be done in an expedited way We have that system in place but they need to believe it.” Asked what he would say to immigrant victims of domestic violence who are potentially feeling anxious about their legal status and who may be afraid to ask for help out of fear of deportation “I would say a lot of immigrants are people of faith Talk to the clergy; they will make that call with you Talk to your social services; they’re obligated We’re mandated reporters to be able to contact the police station and to get the help that is necessary.” “We’re very fortunate in New York City Having worked in the City and working in the Council for people who are in that situation that they feel they have control that they could nurture the perpetrator and to get them out of being violent [but] the fact is that’s a myth; it doesn’t work That’s not the way to really get that person to get help We need law enforcement to come in and for people who are committing this type of behavior sometimes that’s the catalyst and the crisis that induces that to take place.” the department responds to around 230,000 domestic violence incidents annually “Domestic violence prevention police officers face unpredictable potentially volatile situations and therefore are highly trained to help ensure victims’ safety as well as their own,” they said were dispatched via a 911 call for a domestic dispute between the caller and her 47-year-old son Mora and Rivera were shot multiple times by a perpetrator and later died before the perpetrator was subsequently shot by Sulan The radio dispatcher had advised the responding officers that the caller indicated her son was threatening her with physical violence though no indication was given about the presence of weapons at the scene All three were later promoted to detective (two posthumously) which are possibly triggered by mental health episodes have also been left bereaved when police are called and the DV perpetrator ends up getting shot to save the lives of other family members Police said more than 400 NYPD domestic violence prevention officers and supervisors assist victims of domestic violence citywide on an ongoing basis They said domestic violence officers visit the homes of victims provide counseling services and shelter alternatives They said the department is committed to serving all communities in the City of New York especially those vulnerable to victimization and added that victims of domestic violence and other related crimes who have entered the United States on a temporary basis may be eligible for U nonimmigrant status visas The NYPD said their Domestic Violence Unit also performs domestic violence awareness outreach Department officials said each local precinct and public service area has a domestic violence office and the NYPD has prepared three separate brochures in different languages about domestic violence and the strategies that can help combat or prevent it Residents should contact their local precinct for more information [Details for local precincts can be found at the end of this story.] during Domestic Violence Awareness Month (held in October) “We stand with our women and young girls in this fight to end domestic and gender-based violence Our girls deserve a future free of fear and free of violence.” As also reported the Office of the Bronx District Attorney’s Office holds a 5K Run each year to help bring more awareness to the issue of and of the resources available to those affected by In 2021, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced increased funding of $6.5 million to address the issue and also highlighted a then-new “technology safety and innovation for survivors” public awareness campaign to shine a light on technology’s role in abuse Domestic violence can also have fatal affects on pets recently posted on social media that they had agreed to help a friend who was in grave danger of domestic violence and who was running for her life with her two young children and their cat The group said the family were in “big trouble” and that their pet cat needed an immediate foster “The connections between perpetrators and victims of domestic [violence] and pets are complicated and varied,” Little Wanderers wrote “Perpetrators of domestic violence often threaten harm or bring actual harm to their victims’ pets in order to control them or to punish them for actually leaving or attempting to leave.” They said another beloved family pet cat had been thrown out of a 3-story window earlier the same day and was missing “Concern over the safety of pets often delays domestic violence victims from seeking help or prevents them from seeking assistance entirely “A study found that more than a quarter of domestic violence victims stay in abusive relationships for a median time of two years to avoid leaving their pets behind and a staggering percentage of domestic violence victims report returning to an abusive partner out of concern for their pets’ safety.” They added, “This response is well-founded, given that up to 89% of pet-owning women entering shelters reported that their abuser had injured, killed, or threatened family pets. This happened today. [The cat’s name] may be gravely injured; she was thrown out of a window.” More information can be found for Little Wanderers NYC here Speaking outside the viewing and wake for Alcántara Rubiera a male spokesperson for the family thanked family members and the clergy of both the New Life Outreach International Church and Alcántara’s own church for all their support while the family continued to grieve He said her body would be flown to the Dominican Republic on March 19 for another viewing and funeral service very sad moment for the family,” he said before introducing Alcántara Rubiera’s aunt The aunt also thanked all those who supported the family and helped in the search for her niece who she described broadly in Spanish as a smiling “She was strong and took care of her family,” she said “She found God when she moved here to the United States We’re all going to remember her now,” she said Local services for those affected by domestic or gender-based violence are available in The Bronx If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic or gender-based violence call 311 and ask to be connected to a NYC Family Justice Center or walk-in Monday to Friday The Bronx District Attorney’s domestic violence unit can be reached on (718) 838 6688 has long been working to help survivors of both domestic violence and human trafficking in The Bronx Email Moniqueriley@freedomyouthfamilyjusticecenter.org or call (929) 612-3667 for more information Call the NYC 24/7 Domestic Violence Hotline on 1-800-621-4673, or visit the NYC Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence for more information The Domestic Violence Officer at the 52nd Precinct, which covers some or all of Bedford Park, Fordham, Kingsbridge, Norwood, Bronx Park, and University Heights, can be reached at (718) 220-5843 or via e-mail The Domestic Violence Officer for the 50th Precinct, which covers some or all of Kingsbridge, Marble Hill, Riverdale, Fieldston, and Spuyten Duyvil, can be reached at (718) 543-6072 or via e-mail The Domestic Violence Officer for the 46th Precinct, which covers some or all of Fordham, University Heights, Morris Heights, and Mount Hope, can be reached at (718) 220-5254 or via e-mail View current print edition Click here to read our disclaimer >> as the impacts will be in a much larger area José Rubiera spoke on his YouTube channel on the night of this Monday about the serious danger that the imminent impact of Hurricane Milton represents for residents in Florida Although the beloved Cuban meteorologist addressed the issue when Milton was still a category 5 - it has now dropped to 4 - his observations continue to be perfectly valid It displayed the perfectly defined eye of the powerful weather phenomenon and noted that it has a significant structure of spiral bands to the south and north that will affect a large part of the state in one way or another Rubiera showed the different models of forecasts but he urged not to pay too much attention to the exact location where the hurricane will make landfall and emphasized that the severe damage covers a very wide area especially large in this case because it is a major hurricane "I don’t think it’s good; it’s incorrect for them to focus their vision on the center because the center is just a representation of the storm but a broad area […] It doesn’t matter if it passes through Tampa; the effect will be north of Tampa and south of Tampa," he said it is a wide zone that creates 'a path' and causes destruction What is inside the cone has a 70 percent probability of being affected The entire peninsula will be affected in some way," he insisted Rubiera also referred to the rapidity with which Milton went from tropical depression to storm and then to hurricane He described the case as an “explosive intensification” in just a few hours something that he noted has become a recent trend for several hurricanes due to climate change The rapid development was also contributed to by the favorable conditions of the warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico and the favorable conditions in the upper atmosphere It is a major hurricane that will even affect areas that have already been impacted by Helene so there is already an important precedent.” "They need to prepare well to avoid loss of life and prevent material damage If you are in a flood area or on the coast Material damage can be recovered over time Hurricane Milton has strengthened as an extremely dangerous threat to the Florida peninsula as it moves northeast after passing near the Yucatán Peninsula With sustained winds of up to 155 mph (250 km/h) Milton poses a serious threat to life and property along the west coast of Florida The Miami Meteorological Service has warned of the strength of the winds and swells that will reach the state in the coming hours Weather update from Cuban veteran José Rubiera for this week of February 24 Cuban meteorologist Rubiera updated the weather in Cuba and Florida on his YouTube channel this Sunday Although he doesn't usually broadcast on this day "given the rain with an extratropical low and a cold front it's a good time to update the weather situation." "We discussed this phenomenon on Friday, but today we bring you the latest information. Let's look at the weather satellite image. Some media outlets, including the NY Daily News, had reported that the boyfriend of the missing woman had been taken into custody and was being questioned When Norwood News asked police about this earlier on Thursday they said a person was being questioned but would not confirm the relationship of that person to the missing woman Fox News reported that the body of the woman found in Yonkers had been found inside a red suitcase several missing person fliers were seen posted outside and inside the building and candles were also seen outside on the sidewalk in a small box under another missing person’s flier The same night Norwood News observed a police van sometimes used for the transportation of people located at the side entrance to the 46th Precinct stationhouse We also observed a silver-colored car being towed in front of the station-house and asked the NYPD if the car was being towed as evidence in the case We also reached out to a family member of Alcántara Rubiera for comment and will share any updates we receive A vigil for the young woman was held outside her home on Friday night our hearts are heavy with the loss of Pamela Alcantara Rubiera She is in our prayers and ask for her to be in yours including our family We ask for your donation with the assistance of the burial and transference of Pamela Alcántara Rubiera to the Dominican Republic to be next to her younger sister We appreciate any collaboration.” The message was repeated in Spanish We have asked GoFundMe to confirm the authenticity of the links and they duly confirmed their veracity nypd was called and nothing we came out with fliers and spread the word after 5 days for looking and everything we found her body Her mom is going to want to take her back to DR Please any thing would help.” We have reached out to the NYPD for comment on these remarks and will share any updates we receive Perez Diaz is presumed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law police responded to a 911 call regarding an aided woman at 810 River Avenue in the Concourse section of the borough officers observed a 41-year-old female unconcious and unresponsive,” police said “EMS responded and pronounced the aided female deceased at the scene The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death and the investigation remains ongoing at this time The identity of the deceased is pending family notification.” The Bronx DA’s domestic violence unit can be reached on (718) 838 6688 As previously reported has long been working to help survivors of both domestic abuse and human trafficking in The Bronx 12/11/2024 - 7:47pm (GMT-5) | The Cuban meteorologist José Rubiera warned on Tuesday about the high probability of a tropical cyclone forming in the western Caribbean this week and advised that the western region of Cuba should remain vigilant for a possible approach of the system Rubiera announced on YouTube that although November is traditionally a relatively quiet month in the hurricane season the current conditions in the region are conducive to the development of a cyclonic system an active tropical wave south of Jamaica in the western Caribbean is showing signs of organization that could develop into a tropical cyclone within the next 72 hours and German models—three of the most accurate in weather forecasting—agree that this system could intensify as it moves westward approaching areas in northeastern Nicaragua or the Gulf of Honduras The factors contributing to this potential cyclonic formation include the high heat content in the surface waters of the western Caribbean and the low intensity of winds in the upper atmosphere all of which favor the strengthening of these types of systems the weather phenomenon may pause its movement for two or three days and then resume its movement towards the northwest bringing it closer to the Yucatán Peninsula and possibly to the western part of Cuba and western Cuba are advised to stay vigilant regarding weather reports Authorities and emergency services are on alert to respond to potential impacts and reports on the behavior of this cyclonic system are expected to be updated daily the National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the United States reported an increased likelihood of a tropical depression forming in the Caribbean Sea before the end of the week there are disorganized rains and thunderstorms over the central Caribbean Sea which are associated with a broad area of low pressure The chances of that area of low pressure developing into a tropical cyclone in the next two to three days are 60% as the system slowly moves westward toward the western Caribbean Sea VIKINGS RUBIERA: Rivi, Bartoli D., Benci 4, Bortolotti, Errico 5, Oleari 3, Kasa 2, D'Agata, Bartoli R. 1, Gonzalez, Hila, Giovanardi, Strada 5, Bonassi, Fedila 4, Boni. "Being relegated hurts - reads a note from the club, which makes no excuses - but the verdict of the field is final and honestly correct: this season started badly, many mistakes on and off the field, a mountain to climb that proved too arduous and, despite the extraordinary self-denial of the boys, many of whom finished in tears, we were unable to straighten it out. There is still one last match to play, to honor this year until the end: Saturday in Bolzano". Concepts reiterated by the Vice President Luca Bartoli: "Being relegated hurts, this is the first step backwards since the club was refounded. It happens, the important thing is to correct ourselves and start again. There are many things to fix, but paradoxically this relegation can be the first step towards a new beginning. Rubiera deserves Serie A and Serie A must have Rubiera. So starting next season we will aim to return to the top". The club has decided that its number three will no longer be worn by anyone. whose body was found inside a red suitcase on a highway near Yonkers on Thursday died of homicidal asphyxiation according to evidence presented in court by the Bronx District Attorney’s office on Saturday evening The news was confirmed during a Saturday night arraignment at Bronx Criminal Court for defendant Junior Perez Diaz who she had planned to leave and who was arrested on murder and other charges on Friday His arraignment had been delayed for most of Saturday According to the criminal complaint signed and dated March 7 and kidnapping causing the death of the 26-year-old woman The grounds for the sworn evidence provided by NYPD Det Jeovany Geronimo (the deponent) of the 46th Precinct and summarized in the criminal complaint are that it is his belief based on the NYPD investigation and video surveillance from around the alleged time of the crimes Perez Diaz allegedly prevented Alcántara Rubiera from leaving their home between the hours of 2 a.m and a church planning event she was expected to attend on March 2 with the red suitcase containing the victim’s body He went on to say that Perez Diaz allegedly drove with the suitcase to Sawmill Parkway near Yonkers in Westchester County where he allegedly left it inside a ditch along the side of the parkway before Exit 5 As reported Norwood News had observed a silver-colored car being towed in front of the 46th Precinct on Thursday evening while Perez Diaz was reportedly being questioned inside the station-house We asked the NYPD if the car was being towed as evidence in the case No video or audio recording was permitted by the media inside the courtroom A bail request for Perez Diaz by his defense was denied during the arraignment by presiding Judge C based on Perez Diaz’s “prior history” [record of theft] and the severity of the allegations in the context of the murder case it was the view of one of the parties in court (who were not facing the media) that Perez Diaz “puts his own self-interests above those of society’s.” The court heard that Alcántara Rubiera’s body had been found with bruising to the neck The legal parties acknowledged and agreed that Perez Diaz and Alcántara Rubiera were known to each other The court heard that the victim had planned to leave Perez Diaz and that he had been “secretly recording” her The prosecution requested a copy of Perez Diaz’s statement and alibi and asked that he be remanded in custody for the duration of the case The prosecution said that Perez Diaz was the only person to enter and exit the couple’s apartment after the last sighting of Alcántara Rubiera alive The court also heard that neighbors had tried to reach out to Alcántara Rubiera after her disappearance but couldn’t get inside her apartment The prosecution alleged that Perez Diaz allegedly “lied” to neighbors about her disappearance and allegedly gave false information about his girlfriend’s whereabouts There was some discussion during the arraignment among the legal parties about a video interrogation of Perez Diaz which reportedly took place on March 5 and the date of his arrest which was March 7 a black sweatshirt with red lettering on the front he appeared to maintain a neutral facial expression and to have his hands cuffed behind his back though a court officer blocked the view of reporters throughout his court appearance It did not appear that there were any family members of the victim present in the courtroom though there were some other people present (as other arraignments also took place the same evening) The defense attorney for Perez Diaz requested an order of protective custody for his client while remanded and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner would determine the cause of death Perez Diaz was charged March 7 with second-degree murder (The latter charge appears to have been later updated to two separate counts of kidnapping according to the criminal complaint.) My first coach was Alessandro Perrone and with him I got to the blue shirt. In 2015 I won the European Junior Championship 10.000 meters, then I set the Italian record for 10 km on the road. In Valencia last year I finished the half in 59'41'', while my personal records for 10000 and 5000 are 27'50''51 and 13'22. ''73". These are already data from a good career which he gave a turning point by moving to Rubiera four years ago. "True, it was a drastic decision; at the time I felt at a standstill, I knew Stefano because he had been youth manager, I knew the training methodology from the Dini twins and I moved. I feel great, Corradini is my second home , it's the best place to do well." Are we talking about the silver you won in Rome? "I was fine, but I set out with the intention of finishing in the top eight, because in the previous days I had retired in a track race with bad feelings." "I had a very positive day, great support and I remained in the leading group. Then Crippa pulled away, I pulled away a little to get back into the leading group again." "I understood that I could get to a medal and I gave it all I had, gaining the positions that led me to an unexpected silver medal and before you ask me... I'll tell you about the final straight". As she passed the second, German Amanal Petros, she waved to him. The jury considered the unsportsmanlike gesture to be minor: had it been serious, you would have been disqualified. "I made a mistake and I was rightly warned. I have no justification, but it wasn't a gesture aimed at him or his country. Maybe it made me nervous that he widened out on the corner to not let me pass, but it fits and it didn't happen in the race nothing between us. I'm sorry because this gesture has gone around the world, I would like the controversy to end here. Will I offer him a pizza? You are also registered for the 10.000, will you do it? "No, with Stefano we decided to end here, the recovery times are really too short." There is no half marathon at the Olympics. "No and I don't have the minimum in the 10.000m. I have the best Italian time of the year, but there won't be any Italians in this race." both character performers at Walt Disney World and passionate about making magic at Disney Vicente’s vibrant personality and contagious laugh made him stand out of a crowd—I knew I wanted to be his friend Flash forward 3 years and Vicente is still one of my best friends that I have met through the Disney College Program Vicente is what I would call a dream chaser He’s fortunate enough to know exactly what he wants to do for the rest of his life: make magic with Disney Vicente’s most recent position at Disney was as a Cultural Representative in the Mexico pavilion his job came to an abrupt halt when he was furloughed Although he is a furloughed Disney Cast Member he has remained positive throughout the entire experience I was able to sit down and speak to Vicente (virtually) and he shared the positive spin and hopeful attitude he has towards this furlough Vicente reached “trainer status” on his CRP The Cultural Representative Program (CRP) is a year-long program where Disney sponsors international workers’ Visas so that there is proper representation in the countries in the World Showcase Aly: Tell me more about what being a program participant looks like Vicente: Being a Disney program participant is a life-changing experience in all aspects that you are looking for—professionally and personally There are countless wonderful experiences ready for you to live Every single day you get the opportunity to create long-lasting memories for families from all across the world We get to share our culture with the world and it makes me appreciative and proud of where I come from People from all over the world have adopted Mexico’s beloved traditions like celebrating the lives of their passed beloved ones This is thanks to a certain movie called Coco—and that is all because of Disney Look how happy Vicente looks in his costume Aly: What’s the type of energy you need to be as a Cast Member Vicente: I’d describe a great Cast Member as someone who brings a positive attitude everywhere they go and they have the passion to go above and beyond to deliver the best guest service experience the most important characteristic of a great Cast Member is knowing and believing that they have the ability to create magic wherever they go Vicente: Out of everything that you get to experience while working at Disney the biggest perk without a doubt is the friendships you make I could easily write a whole novel about the incredible people that I have met: the once strangers that I now call my Disney family I’d say when you are finishing a Disney Program this becomes the reason why it is so hard to let go and say “see you real soon pal.” It’s incredible how fast you connect with fellow Cast Members They are the ones who are happy for your happiness or dispute ever seems to diminish what you have with these friends Last October we visited Vicente during his CRP Aly: You were part of the group of Disney Cast Members who were furloughed due to the parks having to close How did you stay positive during this time Vicente: I’d be lying to you if I say I took it completely positive right from the very beginning I didn’t know how to process that we wouldn’t be back in The Plaza de los Amigos doing the “mariachi scream” every morning to welcome guests from all over the world to our Pavilion or how were we going to be able to say goodbye to the “familia” we had created Disney was right there with us every step of the way and we came to realize that we weren’t alone We were very lucky because we were able to navigate through those difficult times alongside the “familia” that we had created throughout our program in the Mexico Pavilion During the time we were on lockdown in Disney Housing we would get together every day and have all of our meals together We started having impromptu karaoke sessions We put our creativity to work and started new things Before we started saying goodbye to everyone we all got together to watch Happily Ever After on YouTube It was without a doubt very well spent quality time with the people that came to be close to our hearts Aly: What have been some of your positive takeaways from this experience being furloughed I realized that sometimes we don’t take the necessary time to process what you have I’ve been reflecting on the beautiful experience that was the Program and remembering the magic we were able to bring every day to people of all ages from all over the world I’ll continue to share the magic wherever I go because at the end of the day we create happiness no matter where we are Vicente: I try to remind myself every day of who I am and what I aspire to become one day To always bring an enthusiastic attitude and a creative mind that can build on stories Helping develop a collaborative environment where honesty Not only is Vicente passionate about making magic at Disney—he’s also really good at sharing it online His social media accounts are dedicated to sharing positivity Check out his vibrant photos on Instagram and fun videos on YouTube for your daily dose of magic Want to learn even more about Disney and keep up with the magic in the parks? Subscribe to Astana domestique Jose Luis 'Chechu' Rubiera confirmed his planned retirement at the end of the 2008 season Known for his domestique skills in the mountains the Spaniard spent seven years with the US Postal turned Discovery Channel between the years 2001 and 2007 Rubiera was one of several riders to move from the defunct Discovery Channel squad with team-manager Johan Brunyeel to the revamped Astana outfit Rubiera was expected to retire at the end of 2007 but according to the climber he had always intended to compete in 2008 "It was a misunderstanding that I was going to retire last year," said Rubiera "Last year I couldn't find a team and at the end of the Vuelta The situation of cycling was really bad and I was not able to find anything but thought that if I was not able to keep racing because I couldn't find a team then I was prepared for retirement because there was no there option," he added "Johan called me with the option of riding for Astana but I have always planned I will retire after this year." Rubiera feels his season to date with Astana has been successful with a good start at the ProTour's opening round in Australia and now at the Tour of California With the season starting on a high already for Rubiera the rider is hoping for one more piece of good news in the form of a Tour de France invite for his squad Astana hasn't been invited to any of French race organizer ASO's races - including the Tour de France - but Rubiera is hopeful the decision will be reversed "The team is really going well and I've been having a good time at the races away from Europe," said Rubiera "As of right now we are not invited to the Tour but I hope that will change if not I will focus on competing in the Vuelta." Rubiera believes that physically it is feasible to continue for another two or three more years due to maintaining a healthy lifestyle for years However the Spaniard wants to change his focus to starting a family in the next couple of years "I'm 35 and healthy and so maybe I could do a couple of years at the same level and quality of racing I'm doing now," he said "But I think it is also a good moment to stop and to enjoy life." Despite having just nine victories listed on his palmares since turning professional in 1995 Rubiera is one of the sport's super-domestiques In addition to the Spaniard's efforts to sure up Levi Leipheimer's second Tour of California win last week Rubiera was seen as a large contributor to some of Lance Armstrong's seven Tour de France victories "I think it was a long career and I was lucky with my health but I wanted to take the time to do different things with my life "Time at home and try to find a career using my past studies as an engineer I don't have children and that is another big reason for my retirement." After turning professional in 1995 with Artiach Rubiera claimed his first major victory two years later by conquering the Giro d'Italia's Stage 19 The Spaniard claimed his second Grand Tour stage victory three years later when he returned to Italy's Giro and won Stage 13 The 2000 win would be Rubiera's final Grand Tour win despite coming close again when he finished runner-up on the Giro's 202 kilometre Stage 3 in 2006 Rubiera also enjoyed glory on American soil when he claimed the Tour of Georgia's mountains classification in 2005 Rubiera's latest victory came in Asia during Discovery Channel's final season where he won the Tour of Qinghai Lake's Stage 8 Cotobello climb dubbed 'Cima Chechu Rubiera' José Luis 'Chechu' Rubiera says he believes that the Cotobello climb in Asturias that is almost to feature as a summit finish in the final week of the 2010 Vuelta a España will provide a spectacular setting for what is sure to be one of the crucial moments of the race Vuelta to include summit finish on Cima Rubiera if selected for the Vuelta by his new RadioShack team it would also provide him with a great way to round off his career in his 16th and final season given that the climb has been dubbed the 'Cima Chechu Rubiera' in his honour About to enter the last month of his contract with Astana Rubiera recently climbed the Cotobello accompanied by journalists from Asturian paper Comercio Digital "The Cotobello climbs steadily at about 8% a climb that takes a lot out of because of its constant difficulty," said Rubiera after his reconnaissance "There aren't many climbs of more than 10km on which a good climber can create decent gaps I believe there will be here because there are scarcely any points where you can get respite and on the final section there are ramps of 10-15% and even up to 18% which mean that riders will have to maintain a good rhythm." Likely to come in the middle of the Vuelta's final week Rubiera insists the climb will be decisive especially if a rider like Alberto Contador is in contention "It will be a decisive day full of mountains where riders such as Alberto Contador will be able to decide the Vuelta because a champion like him will probably climb it in the 21 from the bottom and set a hellish pace that will be difficult to follow," Rubiera reckoned Rubiera said "the Cotobello is a little less tough than the Angliru but its constant gradient makes it as complicated as more mythic summit finishes that are already well known at the three major tours." He added that Vuelta organisers Unipublic were considering three route options for the stage finishing on the Cotobello would be a day that takes in the Colladona La Falla de los Lobos and El Cordal climbs Another option would be to include a passage over the Cobertoria which featured as a summit finish in the 2006 race Looking ahead to his final season in the peloton Rubiera admitted climbing the mountain named after him in next September's Vuelta would be a good way to bow out on a climb that's called the Chechu Rubiera You can still enter the 2009 Cyclingnews reader poll and vote for your riders One lucky reader will win an Argon18 Krypton bike so get your entries in before the closing date - December 31 Peter Cossins has written about professional cycling since 1993 and is a contributing editor to Procycling He is the author of The Monuments: The Grit and the Glory of Cycling's Greatest One-Day Races (Bloomsbury March 2014) and has translated Christophe Bassons' autobiography has re-signed a one-year agreement with his Astana team especially with poor performances in 2007," explained Rubiera "After a successful season with Team Astana Rubiera was Armstrong's mountain lieutenant for five Tour de France victories but has also achieved individual success with two stage victories in the Giro d'Italia "I am very glad that Chechu decided to continue," commented team manager Johan Bruyneel "Chechu proved this year that he is important for the team His role is to guide the team on the road and to share his experience with all young riders of our team." the members of the 2009 Astana squad are: Renowned Cuban meteorologist José Rubiera is admitted to the intensive care unit of the Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery in Havana, where he is being treated.cupIt was at this time after suffering a cardiovascular event, his wife confirmed to the portal cubadebate According to a source from the medical institution the scientist came to the hospital yesterday complaining of discomfort Some state media outlets have reported that he is in stable condition after undergoing angioplasty and having a stent inserted Although no details of the condition have been offered, the agency Prensa Latina The URL of your information indicated that it was a heart attack Prominent Cuban meteorologist José Rubiera stable after heart attack https://t.co/NFp0vuaMOa — Cuban News Agency (@ACN_Cuba) September 8, 2020 The lead specialist treating him confirmed that he is currently under constant surveillance by a medical team and is progressing satisfactorily so soon "he will be fighting alongside his people to report on the cyclones." former director of the National Forecast Center of the Cuban Meteorological Institute is the most respected and beloved figure in Cuban meteorology broadcasting weather forecasts on National Television especially during hurricanes and other weather events https://www.facebook.com/insmet.cuba.9/posts/774918096673264?__cft__%5B0%5D=AZXG0bxKBumLbH_AoHvgvxGhZrm7hYmsOhdioWCHfcZU5vPrF_mM0dzougHaeYAptmP28EiqIbHoyd_XKjhrfN9u71xZQ8c6RqfW8eZaOgVgflk0fW4VCNhj8hw0Td_XwmE&__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R is also a deputy in the National Assembly of People's Power and vice president of the World Meteorological Organization's Hurricane Committee for the North American With a degree in Meteorology and a doctorate in Geographical Sciences he has devoted himself to presenting weather reports for both Cuban radio and television since the early 1980s So much so that some Cubans living in other countries given the high effectiveness of his forecasts and his charisma who's going to inform us with so much love about it A big hug for a humble and good person like you so we hope to see you in front of the cameras soon You're a strong person; it's important that you're well on behalf of all the drivers and the service and administrative staff of the ETECSA national cargo base in Naranjito and on my own behalf we wish you a speedy and safe return.cupreaction so that he will soon be back with us giving us his comments and alerts on the weather Rubiera...keep up your spirits and stay strong!!
