When long snapper Avery Salerno left Jackson State after two seasons with the Tigers and entered the transfer portal
“it was more about the educational side of it,” he said
“Jack State didn’t have my major and I talked to the coaches about it and they respected it
Public administration is why Salerno committed to the Arizona Wildcats last week
becoming the second long snapper to join the Wildcats
along with All-American Broden Molen from Montana
Arizona “had exactly what I wanted in the masters program,” Salerno said
“That was the most important thing,” he added
“The coaches were phenomenal and I wanted to go to a program that was on the rise and a team that I could help win immediately
I wanted to make an impact on the team immediately and help them win.”
is striving for two pathways after he’s done playing football: working for the U.S
Department of Homeland Security and coaching football
Salerno has “a lot of family friends involved in (Homeland Security) and it just always caught my eye growing up,” he said
“It has always been an interesting thing to me,” Salerno said
they’re guys who aren’t in the spotlight and are behind the scenes
They get all the dirty work done and it’s always been interesting to me.”
Salerno said “it usually takes two years to get hired by Homeland Security.”
I want to get into coaching,” said Salerno
“If my eligibility runs out sooner than what we want
they’re going to help me find a (graduate assistant) spot somewhere or find a spot on the staff at Arizona
“I didn’t see myself coaching until I started helping these kids
It brought a different type of feeling and I’ve never felt this type of feeling before

Arizona landed its second long snapper this offseason after Jackson State transfer Avery Salerno committed to the Wildcats
Salerno joined “Spears & Ali” on ESPN Tucson this past week to talk about joining Arizona
his long-snapping journey and playing at Jackson State
How was your official visit to the UA last week
I grew up with 100% humidity almost every single day
I never felt so hot but so cool at the same time
I love the coaching staff and I just fell in love on the spot.”
How was it getting to know first-year special teams coordinator Craig Naivar and what kind of coach is he
the coaches who had the most energy stood out to me and helped me more and developed me as a player
My dad (Tony Salerno) was a long snapper at Florida State in the Bobby Bowden era
so I was thrown into that role during Pop Warner
I started taking it serious around eighth or ninth grade
I played linebacker throughout high school
but it became a world of its own after my junior year
I started to get recruited for linebacker and long snapper
How much did your father influence your long-snapping journey
He has pushed me to be where I’m at today and I’m forever grateful for it
He’s had the experience of playing at the level I wanted to be at
He was a great mentor and I couldn’t have asked for a better dad.”
Have you had any blunders or memorable snaps in a crucial point of a game
A: “I’ve been blessed to say I haven’t had many bad snaps
but my last bad snap was probably in high school
We were in the playoffs and we were down by a touchdown
The worst feeling of my life was when I snapped the ball and I started running
he doesn’t even have the ball yet?’ I turn around and it’s in the back of the end zone
The whole town will shut down (for a game)
little stadium but we usually fit about 4,000 or 5,000 per game
I started dating this girl at Jackson (State) and I’ve been doing a lot more deep-sea fishing
I won’t be doing deep-sea fishing at Arizona
How was it being at Jackson State during the post-Coach Prime era
Everyone thought it was going to be the same product
Taylor finally got the players he wanted for the second season and we won the HBCU national championship
We got to play in the Atlanta Falcons stadium in front of 40,000 people
To win an HBCU national championship and bring it home to Jackson
It was a great feeling to see the fans celebrate with us and walk with us through all of the trials and errors.”
How was the culture at Jackson State during your time there
A: “The first thing I heard on my recruiting visit was
‘You gotta listen to the marching band.’ It is something else
The culture wasn’t much different than any other college campus
It was a great environment and everybody was really nice
The fans are amazing and the city of Jackson falls behind the university
what’s your favorite southern food and what’s one food you’ll miss
One thing that shocked me when I went over there
I got over to Arizona and I asked for a sweet tea

Listen to “MI Local” with host Jeff Milo Tuesday nights from 9-10 p.m
Salerno was in the Grand Rapids-based alt/noise-rock group Sojii (which recorded its debut album with the late Steve Albini)
Salerno started Dick Texas when she moved to Detroit in 2019
“Catharsis is in almost everything that I make,” Salerno said
remarking upon one of the most distinctive qualities of “All That Fall” — which involves reverb-splashed guitars that go from resonant twangs into purposefully dissonant crescendos
“And that’s what draws me to a lot of the music that I like
I think in this project — and especially what comes out on this album — my biggest goal as an artist is to just write better and better songs…and I think a lot of that came out in my guitar playing.”
“All That Fall” certainly has some elements of alt-country-conjuring twang to it
and a proclivity toward some grittier textures
but I’m hooked by these primal and honestly satisfyingly abrasive circuitous guitar phrases that singe the edges of each composition
the album attains its radiance from the subtle yet spellbinding lead vocals of Salerno
weaving gracefully through those stormy guitars
Salerno said: “I do like exploring the extremes of dynamics…”
seem to take their time — following slowed tempos that stretch tracks into the six-minute mark
“I have low blood pressure” Salerno said
“And I think that slow…it’s a good experience to explore
and I think that was a big energy to my early 20s
this slow universe has been really nice…”
Salerno was joined in studio by band member
multi-instrumentalist/audio-engineer Adis Kaltak
who added more anecdotal exposition about the recording process
particularly the vocals for a track we listened to
“Flies,” from “All That Fall.” Stream it for the full interview
Along with an interview with Salerno, we premiered a lot of new music by local artists this week (as we often do, on MI Local). We started the show with the brand new single from Grand Rapids-based indie-pop ensemble Phabies, along with the Detroit-based alt-country duo Neu Blume
who have a release party coming up on May 31 with Bonny Doon and Conor Lynch at UFO Bar

I will grouse a bit more about VanDerStock
it should have been easy enough for the Court to reject all of our arguments
and find the government had the best reading of the statute
Justice Gorsuch of all people decided to extend the Salerno standard to administrative challenges
thus greenlighting for the government a doctrine far more deferential than Chevron
I vigorously disagree with Bostock and McGirt
but understand why Gorsuch did what he did
I cannot fathom why VanDerStock came out the way it did
Whatever good was done by jettisoning Chevron has now been unraveled
And you don't have to take my word for it. Will Yeatman and Charles Yates of the Pacific Legal Foundation query if VanDerStock is an "accidental landmark." I didn't realize that DOJ lawyers were already pushing Salerno as a Chevron alternative:
The Salerno standard is another Chevron replacement that has been shopped by the government in the wake of Loper Bright
last year in a challenge brought by Pacific Legal Foundation (where we work) to a 2023 Environmental Protection Agency and Department of the Army Clean Water Act regulation
the Justice Department invoked the "no set of circumstances"standard as a reason for that challenge to fail
the Salerno approach is unique among these Chevron substitutes
in that the "no set of circumstances" framework is far more favorable to the government than even Chevron ever was
For practitioners and scholars of administrative law
the crucial concrete result from VanDerStok is that the Court linked APA § 706(C) with facial review
the Justice Department is on the hunt for alternatives to Chevron in a post-Loper world
we can expect government lawyers to more freely argue for facial review of an agency's statutory interpretations under the "no set of circumstances" test
the lower courts have a green light to uphold all manner of regulations
without uttering the shibboleth of Chevron
It is like Lee Optical deference for the APA:
a future scenario where the Supreme Court conclusively interprets APA § 706(2)(A) or (C) to require facial review
Because this "no set of circumstances" test is nearly impossible to pass
judicial review would be unavailable as an effective matter
such a reading of § 706 would obviate Abbott Laboratories v
the seminal 1967 decision on ripeness that unlocked the door to pre-enforcement review under the APA
This is not so far-fetched a scenario: it is
and at least a couple of circuit courts already seem open to the idea
Is this really what Justice Gorsuch intended
the Court offered some limits on its majority opinion
Yeatman and Yates doubt that the majority really thought things through:
for the Court to "create[] a far more powerful deference doctrine" after just ditching the Chevron doctrine
the legal arguments in favor of Defense Distributed have been scoffed at
the courts have refused to engage with our actual positions
judges on all sides of the spectrum mischaracterize the record
toy with rules about venue and jurisdiction
There is just such an irrational fear of people making their own firearms
that even the most ardent opponents of the administrative state will shrug

Democratic nominee against Van Drew ‘has genuine respect for working people,’ top union says
Jeff Van Drew (R-Dennis) enters the final stretch
Democrat Joe Salerno has received the endorsement of the American Federation of State
which represents more than 20,000 workers in New Jersey
“Joe recognizes the contributions that AFSCME members
and all public service workers provide for the people in South Jersey,” AFSCME NJ Council 63 Director Steve Tully said in a statement
“He has genuine respect for working people and he has been a supporter of organized labor in New Jersey.”
Salerno is competing in the 2nd congressional district
a South Jersey district that typically leans Republican
Van Drew was once able to win it as a Democrat before his defection to the GOP
but he won his 2022 re-election race in a 19-point landslide
and few in either party view the race as competitive this year
Salerno, though, has worked to close the gap with Van Drew; he narrowly outraised the congressman in the most recent fundraising quarter with the help of self-funding, and released a poll over the summer arguing that the race is within reach
In addition to AFSCME, Salerno has also gotten endorsements from the New Jersey Education Association, the Communication Workers of America, and the American Federation of Teachers New Jersey, among other unions; the AFL-CIO, the state’s largest union, decided to stay out of the race rather than back either candidate

and he’s brandishing an internal poll that he says proves it
which was conducted by the Democratic polling firm Global Strategy Group
Salerno may have more potential room to grow
since only 32% of respondents are familiar with him
whereas 79% of respondents have already heard of Van Drew
The poll tested a wide variety of positive messaging on Salerno and negative messaging on Van Drew; after respondents heard those messages
Salerno’s internal is the first poll of the 2nd district that has been released this cycle; in fact, it’s the first publicly available poll of any House general election in New Jersey since a Democratic internal poll of the 7th district from January
That landslide result convinced many Democrats that the 2nd district is no longer winnable in the near future, and political forecasters like the Cook Political Report don’t rate the district as competitive this year. But Salerno, who narrowly defeated Alexander in the June Democratic primary
is working to prove that he can turn his fight against Van Drew into a real race
The negative messages tested in Salerno’s poll provide some potential strategies for doing that: painting Van Drew – arguably New Jersey’s most conservative member of Congress – as a pro-Trump
depicts him as a bipartisan businessman who will fight for Social Security and against abortion bans
The poll also tested the presidential race in the district
giving former President Donald Trump a 50%-44% lead over Vice President Kamala Harris; his lead falls to 46%-43% when independent Robert F
That’s approximately in line with Trump’s 52%-47% victory in the district in the 2020 presidential election
Neither presidential candidate is hugely popular in the district
though: Trump’s favorability ratings are 47%-51%
Current President Joe Biden is even less popular
The Global Strategy Group poll was conducted from August 5-8 on behalf of the Joe Salerno campaign
with a sample size of 400 likely New Jersey voters and a margin of error of +/- 4.9%
(CBS12) — Neighborhoods in Port Salerno were bracing for Hurricane Milton on Wednesday night
but instead they came face-to-face with a tornado
Many of the neighbors in one Port Salerno neighborhood met each other for the first time while helping each other put their homes back together
“People need to take this stuff seriously man,” said Tom Perusi
Perusi had hunkered down in his Port Salerno home with his wife
a twister narrowly missed his house and toppled his boat upside down like a toy
His neighbors across the street took a direct hit from the tornado
and everyone was coming together to lend a helping hand in the aftermath
“It’s really everybody,” said Christina Hunter
“Just dropping everything and getting to work.”
“When people are in need," added Ron Bova
I’ll come out for my neighbor (always) at the end of the day.”
Terri Root was still traumatized Thursday from what she heard as she was taking cover in her home last night on Southeast Caroline Avenue
“I thought my neighbors had died!” said Root
How is the weather similar doesn’t even fit I don’t even wanna be here for another one.”
“We’ve got a lot of people out here doing what we can,” said Matt Hewgolod
“But it’s gonna take some time off some people that that lost everything last night and I can’t even fathom that.”
