but the project’s ambitions are grounded: to dissolve the boundary between dwelling and wilderness
The architecture is orchestrated around the terrain
using the bend in the river as both setting and structure
With glass walls that mirror the site’s natural curves and a palette echoing the forest and sky
the villa becomes an extension of its surroundings
Every design move — whether a framed view or a carefully selected material — tightens the bond between inside and out

The Cliffhanger by Pirinen & Salo follows the L-shaped bend of the Ivalo River
granting parallel views of sunrise and sunset across two kilometers of unbroken horizon
Living spaces and sleeping quarters are at once adjacent to and aligned with nature
channeling light and motion from the wilderness beyond
The result is a constant conversation between architecture and the land it occupies
The architects manipulate procession as a storytelling tool
Visitors are first met by a quiet garage that screens the villa from view
Only as they round the corner does the main residence appear
its sculptural form commanding the riverbank
The entry sequence isn’t a grand reveal — it’s a controlled build-up
the team uses modest materials on its exterior and an arctic-inspired palette facing the river
Pirinen & Salo embraces a dual material identity — modest at first glance
While the outer forms are sheathed in everyday finishes to soften the villa’s complexity
its river-facing facades are pure theater: glass
The contrast feels both elemental and deliberate
windowless hallway — echoing traditional Finnish mudrooms — acts as a liminal pause between forest and home
a place to shed the outdoors before the reveal
A soaring double-height hall invites sunlight to cut through a massive skylight while deep blue walls saturate the space
and the view rushes toward you like the river outside
while the forest-inspired ceiling calms and envelops
The Cliffhanger follows the bend of the Ivalo River to maximize panoramic views of the sunrise and sunset
Pirinen & Salo uses the home’s ceiling as a forest floor turned upside down — a multicolored plane that connects the architecture to its wooded context
It’s not literal mimicry but an emotional one
bridging the intensity of the blue hall with the tranquility of nature
The chromatic narrative is extended upstairs
where deep blue corridors lead to bedroom suites sculpted like tents pitched beneath the stars
Each room offers riverside views and subtly warped ceilings
The master suite is pure cinematic stillness — framed sunrises to the east
Pirinen & Salo conceals its main volume behind a garage to create a dramatic sense of arrival
interiors open with a double height main hall with a skylight and immersive views of the river
a multicolored ceiling evokes the feeling of walking beneath a forest canopy
living spaces are enclosed by sculpted ceilings with tranquil river views in all directions
glass walls allow for a fully immersive experience in nature

Text description provided by the architects. The villa integrates the landscape and surrounding nature into daily life. The nature-formed main space is carefully tuned to reflect the landscape beyond the glass walls. Combined with a colour scheme that creates visual connections to the surroundings, this design makes it possible to live as part of the landscape.
The villa is situated on the bank of an L-bend of the Ivalo River, overlooking the rapids. Living spaces and bedrooms mirror the bend's form, allowing for a 1.5 km parallel view to the northeast (sunrise) and a 1 km parallel view to the northwest (sunset) along the river, visible from both living and sleeping areas. Just beyond the river begins the vast Hammastunturi wilderness.

Magic is made when friends and family gather to eat
this concept is a cherished reflection of his upbringing
where meals were a time to bond with family and friends
food isn't just for eating; it's about the connection with each other," he reflects
Born into a family where cooking was second nature
Gutierrez learned early that the kitchen wasn't merely a place for sustenance
His mother's hands deftly preparing meals
the scents of pan de sal at dawn—these memories are what breathe life into the pop-up's menu
At the core is the spirit of communal dining—salo-salo
is about "sharing food with relatives
The kitchen table was always a safe place growing up
it ended with a meal shared in laughter."
The menu offers a thoughtful intersection of the Pacific Northwest's fresh ingredients and the bold
the Grilled Baja Prawn Sinigang—a dish rooted in the tangy
comforting flavors of Filipino sour soup but reimagined with delicate Pacific prawns
their sweetness a perfect counter to the tamarind base
"This one stays fairly true to the original," he says
tradition is elevated with a stunning 14oz bone-in ribeye
my mom's bistek was a favorite—thinly sliced beef in a soy-calamansi marinade
If you didn't get your portion quickly
The dish is given a Pacific Northwest flair with crispy fried potatoes and shishito peppers
a nod to local produce and contemporary presentation
"We finish it with a calamansi soy demi-glace
which gives it that nostalgic Filipino flavor but with a deeper complexity."
it's not just about recreating these flavors but infusing them with the bounty of the Pacific Northwest
replaces the traditional taro leaves with locally sourced kale
and it gives the dish more texture and crunch," he explains
While the dish may depart from its original roots
it remains true to the spirit of Filipino cuisine: "playful
The initiative is in great company. Filipino cuisine is having a moment, with restaurants like Musang and Archipelago pioneering the way
SALO SALO stands out for being one of two Filipino restaurants to operate inside a hotel in the country
it's about pushing those boundaries even further
"Filipino food isn't just dinner; we make mean brunch plates
The Filipino pop-up at Astra may be a temporary venture
to create a space where people come together
and leave feeling they've experienced something meaningful."

Salo is one of the most beloved foods in Ukraine
Famous Ukrainian epigeneticist Dmytro Krasnienkov explained in an interview with RBC-Ukraine whether salo can be relied on as a longevity "superfood."
salo is not a product that promotes rejuvenation
Although it contains beneficial fatty acids
an excess of salo in the diet can lead to negative effects due to its high calorie content
Salo can be eaten in moderation—a small piece will provide energy and some fatty acids
But too much is harmful because of the calories
He added that there are no direct studies on the effect of salo on the biological clock
but its composition suggests that excessive consumption may accelerate aging rather than slow it down
The scientist recommends focusing on other foods that genuinely support longevity: vegetables
Excessive consumption of red meat is associated with the acceleration of the biological clock
Another tip: include as many colorful vegetables and fruits on your plate as possible
Each bright color provides different antioxidants and beneficial compounds that support health
fruits—especially very sweet ones—should be eaten in moderation
The ideal time to consume them is before physical activity
so the sugar from the fruit is used for energy instead of building up in the bloodstream
Krasnienkov also recommends paying special attention to Omega-3 fatty acids—just about 1 gram per day can positively affect the biological clock and help slow down aging processes
Earlier, we shared the diet that reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack by 14%

BRAINERD — Lisa Salo stole the phrase “pressure is a privilege” from her role model Billie Jean King
The former Brainerd Warriors head girls’ tennis coach might think about tweaking it a bit to coaching is a privilege
It’s a privilege and career that spanned more than the 19 years she spent as Brainerd’s head coach
28-March 2 during the Minnesota Tennis Coaches Conference as she will be inducted into the Minnesota Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Fame
The official time and date has yet to be determined
our association’s past president and current executive secretary of the association
called me and said the association would like to induct me into the hall of fame,” Salo said
“I have to say I was totally surprised and incredibly honored to hear that from him
“I know so many of the previous inductees and their incredible coaching careers and their stories
Now to be included in that group humbles me.”
Salo also coached multiple individuals to the Class 2A State Individual Tournament
“The relationships,” Salo said about what she misses the most about coaching
and when I look back I volunteered with middle school boys’ program
long time and it's those relationships and watching them learn a sport that they can play for a lifetime
it’s a sport I love and I’m passionate about
To then see them build that belief in themselves and learn life skills that go along with that
That’s what I reflect on -- those relationships.”
Salo said her life is very different by not being immersed in the coaching world
She said since retiring she realized a “Wheel” was always spinning in her head of planning practices
constructing varsity lineups and devising coaching tips
“My family and friends would always tease me and say ‘I’m obsessed with tennis,’” Salo said
“I would get that all of the time from family and friends
I would tell them it’s more like passionate rather than obsessed.”
When Salo wasn’t coaching the varsity she was coaching
or organizing some level of tennis instruction through Brainerd Community Education or Baxter Parks and Recreation
She coached boys and girls tennis players during the summer for 38 years
She started coaching in 1980 at the Lake Hubert Tennis Camp with former Brainerd coach Bud Schmid
She spent 32 summers working at the camp and earned her United States Professional Tennis Association teaching certification
Salo was a USTA teaching professional at Madden’s Resort from 2002-2012 and coached USTA Junior Team Tennis programs from 2005-2011
no,” Salo said when asked if she ever thought she would have this type of career in tennis
“I never imagined the career that I’ve had and the journey that I would have,” she said
I also know I didn’t do it alone over all of these years
and summer tennis and all of the other off-season programming that I would do and certainly all of the coaches that I’ve worked with
My daughter Mikinzee is pursuing a career in the tennis world as well
I have a smile on my face when I think about that
Everybody has been so important to my journey.”
Salo’s tennis career was sparked by a photo and article of Australian Evonne Goolagong
She believes she was in sixth or seventh grade
Her parents drove from New York Mills to the Wadena Holiday Station

The northern Italian town of Salò has revoked the honorary citizenship of Italy's wartime fascist dictator Benito Mussolini following a vote by the local council on Wednesday evening
The first centre-left administration in the last 20 years succeeded in stripping Mussolini of his honorary citizenship of the town on the banks of Lake Garda
The motion to revoke Mussolini's honorary title
conferred on him in 1924 in the early years of the ventennio fascist regime
was put forward by centre-left councillor Tiberio Evoli
This was the third attempt to strip Il Duce of the honour in the last 20 years
Up until last year Salò had been governed for two decades by the centre-right
which had rejected the motion when it was proposed by the minority
There is nothing new about Italian towns revoking Mussolini's honorary citizenship however this is different: Salò was the heart of the Italian Social Republic
the puppet fascist regime controlled by Nazi Germany that governed northern Italy after the armistice of 8 September 1943
Citizenship was granted to Benito Mussolini long before the birth of the Italian Social Republic. It was 23 May 1924, less than a month before a fascist squad murdered Italian socialist politician Giacomo Matteotti
in a killing that shook Mussolini's regime
Every year on 28 October, a group of fascist sympathisers make the pilgrimage to Salò to mark the anniversary of the March on Rome
The revocation of Mussolini's title "had to be done"
the town's centre-left mayor Francesco Cagnini said on Wednesday night
describing the move as "not ideological" but rather a "unifying moment of sharing
reaffirming the values of love for freedom and democracy"
"We absolutely do not intend to erase history
nor exempt ourselves from dealing with it" - Cagnini stressed - "We do not erase anything: that page of our history

The Wolves responded with a 3-pointer by Cullen Kasbohm

Wis.- When young basketball players in the Northland want to take their game to the next level in the offseason
Salo’s Showcase is ready to answer the call
I’m very skill oriented.” As a local skills trainer
Luke Salo has become a “basketball guru” of sorts — a journey that started once his playing days were over
“I was able to play one year (of college basketball)
I had two knee surgeries and a shoulder surgery — both basketball-related — so I kind of had to find other ways to keep basketball in my life and was very lucky to meet a couple players that played professionally
They kind of got me into working out with them
can you help him out?’ And I just started working with athletes
it’s really blossomed and something really cool.”
Salo’s training sessions have even featured college and professional players with proven on-court experience
a Superior Spartan legend who has since played professional basketball overseas
there was never an opportunity like this for girls to come and play five-on-five and have it be really competitive,” said Lindstrom
I really like to do it… It’s really rewarding on our end
During this summer in which Lindstrom has assisted in Luke’s training sessions
she’s seen a significant increase of local girls’ basketball players committed to offseason improvement
“We had a skill session the other day — boys and girls were welcome,” she explained
“And there was triple the girls that there were the boys
I think that there’s a shift happening a little bit
I think we’re all a little bit here for it
it’s really cool to be a part of it in the area.”
While it’s true that basketball is normally played in the winter months
Salo’s Showcase is proof that the season never really ends for players aiming to unleash their full potential
“It’s becoming kind of eye-opening for a lot of athletes that if I don’t put in more work in the offseason to take advantage of these opportunities,” says Luke
“The increase in these opportunities that athletes are having now in the summer has been awesome for the game and it’s been awesome for the kids
To see all these athletes come and take advantage of that on their weekend when they could be doing other things; but getting their time in the gym with us has been really special to see.”
Players interested in joining Salo’s Showcase training sessions can learn more through the organization’s Facebook page.

the New York Islanders’ 2018 second-round draft pick
has left the organization to sign with the Malmö Redhawks in the Swedish Hockey League
The report comes via Johan Svensson of Expressen
Salo is set to become a group-6 UFA on July 1
but he appears to be headed back to Europe to play in Sweden
So, what led to this? Salo once had a lot of promise here on the Island
let’s revisit what went wrong for Salo on Long Island
Salo joined the Islanders organization from Europe after the 2020-21 season ended and had a strong training camp before reporting to Bridgeport
which was also the inaugural game at UBS Arena
Salo was brought up after six different Islanders players landed in the COVID protocol that sabotaged that opening weekend at UBS Arena
Salo provided a new look for the Islanders’ defense
as the then 23-year-old provided speed to a blue line that at the time regularly saw 44-year-old Zdeno Chara and 38-year-old Andy Greene take on heavy minutes
Sebastian Aho was also fighting for a roster spot after two AHL All-Star seasons while having a couple of cups of coffee with the team
Instead, Parker Wotherspoon was recalled
Wotherspoon did not seem to have a big future with the Islanders or a very high ceiling
was asked point-blank why Salo wasn’t recalled
Trotz openly praised Wotherspoon’s consistent play in Bridgeport before admonishing Salo with a pretty harsh critique
“He hasn’t played as well as he’s needed to play
(Salo) should be an impact and the best defenseman down (there)
Salo finished the year in Bridgeport before playing games 80 and 81 in what had become a lost season for the Islanders
Salo scored 20 points in 40 AHL games and five in 21 NHL games
Those 21 games with the Islanders in 2022-23 gave fans much hope
and he seemed poised to take another step forward
He would have a chance to claim the roster spots left vacant by Andy Greene and Zdeno Chara’s retirements
The latter was the left-shot defenseman slot that Salo would compete for
the Islanders made a splashy move at the draft and acquired Alexander Romanov for the 13th overall pick
Filling the top-4 hole in the lineup left after guys like Nick Leddy
But the third-pair left-shot defenseman roster spot was open
The only other outsider the Islanders brought in was Dennis Chowloski
Salo was the favorite, and indeed, he won the job. In game two of the season, he scored a pair of goals. Then, Salo played two shaky games and was scratched in favor of Aho on October 22. Aho played well
Salo didn’t play again until December 9, when he played for two weeks before being sent to Bridgeport. Salo only re-entered the lineup due to an injury to Adam Pelech
Samuel Bolduc became the top prospect within the organization
He had been coming off of an injury-riddled season but quickly became Bridgeport’s top guy
Even Parker Wotherspoon became the team’s permanent seventh defenseman
Just as quickly as Salo’s rise to notoriety began
Maybe Trotz’s quote may have shaken his confidence more than anyone realized
Perhaps it was the short leash early in October that Lambert gave him
and even Bolduc move past him on the depth chart left a mark
With a touch of irony, Aho’s Islanders career is likely ending
as he’s set to become a UFA on July 1
He was passed on the depth chart by waiver pickup Mike Reilly
while Samuel Bolduc is ready for a bigger role
who battled for a roster position for almost a calendar year in 2022
It’s a nice bow on a frustrating chapter for the Islanders

A representative of the majority has filed a motion for revocation
It is certainly not the first Italian municipality to revoke the citizenship of the Duce

Arizona State University swimming and diving has announced that Dave Salo

Head coach Herbie Behm made the announcement on Wednesday afternoon, saying, “Dave Salo is a swimming icon
He’s a thinker who has pushed the sport forward for over 30 years and someone I’ve looked up too my entire career
Everything one can achieve as a swim coach
I’m so lucky to be able to work with someone like Dave and I know the team will be in great hands with his leadership.”
who had been associate head coach since 2022
took the reins of the Sun Devils swimming and diving program on April 1st
when head coach Bob Bowman accepted the director of swimming role at the University of Texas
The 2024-25 season will be Salo’s first collegiate campaign since retiring from the head coaching position at USC in 2020

and producing 165 All-Americans (89 women/76 men) during his tenure

Just want to leave this comment for everyone slandering Dave’s legacy behind a computer screen
you know nothing about him as a person or a coach
Dave is an incredible person and an even better coach
He let me train with him for free for four months
despite being a measly swimmer compared to the olympic greats that were training with him
Dave is to thank for dispelling with the pseudoscientific training philosophy that suggests training 20 hours a week is somehow going to help you improve on a race that lasts less than a minute
He pioneered race pace training and I dropped 1.6 seconds in my 100 free in one summer season training with him
Don’t know much but usually the crazier the better
Most legendary relay – have you not heard of when the Aussies smashed up like guitars
Can’t imagine his misogynistic flavor re: Hosszu
LGBT rights is great news for the women’s program outlook
Thats why Rebecca Soni won gold training with him
Not to mention others like Breeja Larson and Efimova
Stop slandering coaches you know nothing about
no wonder the Hungarians are hightailing it out of there
He reportedly told Hosszu that she should do something else with her life after London 2012
but here he doesn’t have to be the head coach
This will be akin to Urbanchek coaching for years after he retired
Despite any beliefs he had about the pandemic and shutting down everything
Salo knows swimming and is an asset to anyone he’s helping
He’s at that part of his life where he just wants to coach and doesn’t need to be in charge
I wouldn’t have thought you’d get him to leave L.A.
This is close enough where he can go to LA whenever he wants and I doubt he’s gonna stick around in Tempe full-time once the college season ends
I think Dave Salo is one of the greats and I’m excited to see how he contributes to the team
political beliefs??????????????????????????
just take one good look at his twitter page
I read through his current twitter page entries and found nothing offensive
Maybe you need to look in a mirror Cadwallader
coaches can’t have personal views on politics
keep that crap out of here this is a swimming site
ASU jumped the gun with naming Behm head coach
Let’s see if Behm stays for the whole season
Salo will be there to mentor him in terms of training and provide some recruiting credibility and retention of Olympic hopefuls
I don’t think Salo wants to lead a college program and deal with all the admin tasks and management type tasks
Basically the team can say to recruits they have a Olympic level coach on staff
They worked a lot just to keep him in the program over the years and not take another HC job so that he could assume the role
This is Herbie’s team and Dave will be a great compliment to the staff with his knowledge and experience
They certainly could have done a lot worse
