improved growth performance in male Bianca di Saluzzo chickens
Photo: CanvaBlack soldier fly (BSF) larvae supplementation in the diet of the slow-growing breed Bianca di Saluzzo has been found to improve growth without compromising animal health or meat quality
Researchers from the University of Turin
wanted to look at sustainable protein sources in poultry feed and knew that BSF larvae are a promising solution due to their high protein content and sustainable production
past research has focused on fast-growing breeds
while the effects on native breeds have been less explored
The study therefore aimed to evaluate the impact of BSF larvae supplementation in the diet of slow-growing chickens
The experiment involved 144 male Bianca di Saluzzo chickens
and housed in the university’s experimental facility
There were 6 replicates of 8 birds for each of the 3 treatments
Read more about black soldier fly larvae and other insects as feed by visiting All About Feed
ending when the birds reached 174 days of age
with an intermediate slaughter at 147 days to assess potential age-related effects
Two birds per replicated were selected based on average live weight
resulting in a total of 36 birds per slaughter
The 3 dietary treatments were tested: the control group (c) received a basal diet adapted to niche poultry market
using local ingredients of maize meal (46.1%)
apparent metabolisable energy (11.8 MJ/kg)
The 3 experimental groups were given the same basal diet with an addition of 5% of the expected daily dry matter intake
either as dehydrated or live black soldier fly larvae

Mortality and health status were monitored daily throughout the study and from 39 days the birds’ live weight and feed intake were recorded every 21 days with a feed conversion ratio calculated
The study showed that BSF larvae supplementation
with an increase in final weights compared to the control group
No significant differences were found in feed conversion ratio
liver and spleen weight or histomorphometry between the groups
BSF larvae supplementation did not negatively affect immune function or liver metabolism
Higher production propionic acid was detected in the BSF larvae-fed groups compared to the control
suggesting an effect on volatile fatty acid production
Gut microbiota analysis showed an increase in beneficial bacteria

the meat fatty acid profile and atherogenicity and thrombogenicity indices did not undergo significant changes
implying a low potential risk to consumers’ cardiovascular health
The scientists said the absence of negative effects on meat lipids confirmed the nutritional safety for consumers
making BSF larvae a valid alternative in poultry feed
The paper has been published in the journal BMC Veterinary Research

WILLIAMSTOWN — Odds are when it is Alyssa Sauro’s turn to describe what she did this summer when classes resume in August
her experiences trump the rest of the classroom
The freshman from Williamstown recently wrapped up a perfect showing at the Class A State Track and Field Meet in Charleston with four first-place finishes as the Yellowjacket girls program claimed its third straight team championship
Before Sauro transitions to her sophomore year
she is busy training for a dream experience which will take her to Italy later this month
Sauro joins seven other American runners who will represent the United States in the International U18 Mountain Running Cup in Saluzzo
“I didn’t know much about the competition when I was told I was going,” Sauro said
“I know I will get to meet a bunch of new friends and try a new course
My mom (Michelle Elliott) and I are leaving June 22
We will do some sightseeing for a couple of days and do fun stuff like that.”
The 4.35 kilometer race includes 155 meters of ascent and descent
550 meters around the center of Saluzzo before taking the competitors on a long loop of 3.8 kilometers up onto the hillside to the west of the town
The event is sponsored by the World Running Association (WMRA)
Sauro dominated the distance events this past track season
She also placed second at the state cross country meet in the fall
“Since this race has lots of mountains
I’m trying to train on hills as much as possible,” Sauro said

Clinician Scientist at MedUni Vienna's Department of Dermatology
has been awarded this year's Egon Macher Prize by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Dermatologische Forschung
The award recognizes Saluzzo's research into the increased risk of cancer in HIV-infected individuals due to human papillomaviruses
the Dermatological Research Association (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Dermatologische Forschung) announces a number of different research awards to promote international scientific work in the field of dermatology
The Egon Macher Prize is awarded to young scientists for particularly outstanding scientific work in experimental dermatology
Early treatment and diagnosis increases life expectancy of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)-infected individuals to levels comparable to the general population
Antiretroviral therapy (ART) for inhibits viral replication and reduces HIV viral load to such an extent that the virus is no longer detectable in the blood
This restores the number of CD4+ T-cells in the blood and the risk of opportunistic infections
HIV-positive people are still at increased risk of developing skin and mucosal cancers
in particular due to human papillomaviruses (HPV)
HPV-related cervical cancers are observed 6x more frequently in HIV-positive women and and HPV-related anal cancers 34x more frequently in HIV-positive men
the mechanisms underlying the increased risk for HPV-induced skin and mucosal cancers in HIV patients
despite ART and good immune reconstitution of circulating CD4+ T cells
Human skin hosts to a large number of resident memory T cells (Trm cells)
which are important for immunological protection against viral infection and the development of cancerous cells
Saluzzo's study therefore investigated skin- and mucosa-resident memory T cells in HIV+ individuals
with the aim of understanding their possible involvement in development of HPV-related cancers
Using immunofluorescence analyses of skin biopsies
the researchers found that dermal Trm cells are depleted in the early stages of HIV infection
while early initiation of ART subsequently restored the number of CD4+ Trm cells in the skin of HIV patients
this was not the case in those with initially highly depleted levels of CD4+ T cells in the blood (low nadir)
These so-called "late presenters" displayed irreversible loss of dermal Trm cells and evidence of greater potential for tumorigenesis in the skin and mucosa
In single-cell sequencing coupled with sequencing of the T-cell receptor
the researchers were able to show that there were significantly fewer Trm cells in precancerous skin lesions of "late presenters" compared to precancerous lesions of HIV-negative individuals
These data underscore the importance of starting ART early in HIV-positive people and provide a basis for further research to prevent the development of skin cancer
the findings may also have implications for other patients at increased risk of developing skin and mucosal cancers and similar phenomena could play a role
in patients who are immunosuppressed following an organ transplant

A three-years-long nationwide operation named Cerberus after the three-headed hound of Greek mythology that guards the gates of the Underworld
culminated in the dismantling of two cells operating in the area of the northwestern city of Turin
Attorney General Francesco Saluzzo said at a press conference last week
Charges filed against 65 of the suspects included mafia association and transnational drug trafficking
while six were charged with money laundering for allegedly creating shell companies and reinvesting ill-gotten money

A renowned lawyer and an accountant were among those arrested in Operation Cerberus
One tipped the group about prosecutors' actions early on prompting stronger precautions among other suspects
Prosecutors believe this resulted in establishing shell companies and managing the assets structure
reinvesting the ill-gotten money in business – gambling
and the food industry in this case – grants them control over a specific territory,” Grassi said
Among the suspects are one of ‘Ndrangheta's top cocaine brokers

Agresta was arrested for a murder committed in 2008 and while behind bars
he was crowned “Padrino” - a high profile title in the secretive ‘Ndrangheta hierarchy
Agresta became one of many informants and exposed several members of his own family
Five of them were arrested in Operation Cerberus
He told prosecutors that “studying” had changed him
anti-mafia national prosecutor Federico Cafiero De Raho said that “despite continuous repressive operations
‘Ndrangheta clans continue to expand their criminal capabilities and businesses.”
“About €3 billion worth of mafia assets have been either confiscated or seized by Italian authorities since the beginning of 2019,” Italy's Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese said at a parliamentary hearing last week
Dozens of police operations and hundreds of arrests are made every year
“Ndrangheta still continues to be Italy's most powerful mafia organization,” he added
Cerberus' three heads represented past

“Cenacolo Community members in the United States are experiencing the loss of this special woman

Bishop Baker said that during the Festival of Life in Saluzzo
he “was fortunate to offer a prayer at Mother Elvira Petrozzi’s bedside.”
“She has reminded her Cenacolo family members that ‘life does not die’ and that we should not mourn
but rejoice when God calls her to eternity,” the bishop said

Because of this I can say that in all these years I can see that our community has kept on going even through so many difficulties because good always prevails.”
Pope Francis spoke about Mother Elvira and her community
“I send my heartfelt greeting to the Cenacolo Community
which has been a place of hospitality and human promotion for 40 years,” he said following his Angelus address
Mother Elvira was the fourth of seven children
the family experienced marginalization and poverty
Rita’s father was often drunk and unemployed
had to work outside the home to support the family
Rita spent much of her time helping her to care for the other children
The experience of dealing with an alcoholic father gave Elvira insights that she could call upon later in life in helping drug addicts
The family was so poor that Rita could not afford a pair of shoes

The community received diocesan canonical approval in 1998
and the Vatican recognized it as an international association of the faithful in 2009
“The members of the Community pursue their own personal sanctification by living a strongly Eucharistic and Marian spirituality, in trusting and total abandonment to Divine Providence,” according to the Dicastery for Laity

a distant relative of Primo Levi who fought as a wartime anti-Nazi partisan

a Berlin war claims conference bizarrely denied Levi any compensation for this loss because he was a member of the Italian Resistance
the story of an Italian partisan and Auschwitz survivor
“Voices of the Italian Jewish Resistance” assembles previously unpublished or little-known texts by such writers as the architect Eugenio Gentili Tedeschi)
Among Gentili Tedeschi’s postwar projects were to rebuild Milan’s Central Synagogue on the via Guastalla and the Hebrew school on via Sally Mayer; he was also a captivating writer
“Stardust,” Gentili Tedeschi describes how
as his group of Jewish partisans marched in the countryside
they would whistle the melody of the Hoagy Carmichael pop standard “Stardust,” with one combatant starting and the others picking it up in unison
“just as would be seen many years later in the film
‘Bridge on the River Kwai.’” This unusual choice of martial music
was inspired by his generation’s deep involvement in a “bunch of symbols
the New Deal as filtered through the movies of Frank Capra…”
For these youngsters, whistling “Stardust” was a “radiantly optimistic rendition, our salute to humanity pledged to oppose the universe of hatred constructed by the Fascists and German violence.” Other writings, first published in “Ha Keillah,” a bi-monthly produced by Turin’s Jewish community
include “A Dream” a 1978 essay by the author and educator Ada Della Torre
another cousin of Primo Levi who recalls how in the years 1942-3
the unruffled Levi would teach her about “Freud and astronomy… pointing to the sky and saying
It’s Capella [the brightest star in the constellation Auriga]…’” These bright stars deserve to be remembered

Italy –Alyssa Sauro’s world-class speed was fully realized on Sunday
as the Williamstown High distance runner came away victorious during the International U18 Mountain Running Cup
The field featured dozens of runners from around the world
as Sauro outran all of them to claim the win in 18:03
In the months leading up to the race through Saluzzo
Sauro and her coaches prepared by having her run in places with steep inclines to simulate the mountainous setting
the 3.35 kilometer race (which comes out to 2.7 miles for any Americans keeping track
“I had no idea this would happen,” Sauro admitted of her win
I didn’t know too much about anyone going in
but I said congratulations (to England’s Rebecca Flaherty)
but it’s great to get better with the coaches
Flaherty finished just a couple seconds off Sauro’s winning pace
as the international cross country gold medalist couldn’t keep up with Sauro’s biggest asset: her final gear
“Mike and Cliff Taylor did her training workouts with her before she went over there,” assistant cross country coach Larry Cassady said
“We just found out a couple months ago that she was going to be running over there
and we were still going into the regional and the state meet
We had to be really careful with her training
she started training for the race over there
That race consisted of steps and some pretty significant hills
We took her over to Marietta and let her run on those middle school steps over there
Marys and put her on a hill that’s about a mile up (on route 16).”
Cassady added that Sauro kept her blistering pace up after the state meet
Head cross country coach Mike Taylor saw the best of Sauro this past season
as she notched a second-place finish in the state cross country meet in Ona
She also broke a myriad of school and state records en route to helping the WHS girls’ track team to a third-straight state championship
“We talked about getting her on that (international) team
and we thought she’d be a good candidate for it,” he said
so we looked through some past events they had over there
We saw that she had to run up a bunch of stairs and steep hills
The elevation gain over there is about 500 feet
We also went up to Wayne National Forest next to Frontier High School and used the trails
so we utilized all that and the Broughton trails just trying to mimmick the race the best we could.”
Not only was this victory symbolic of her hard work
but it serves as just one memory in a whole list of them for the cross country standout
The experience for Sauro is one she won’t soon forget
as the sophomore-to-be recalled all the things that made her time in Italy so memorable
“We would go out for coffee and go out for bike rides,” Sauro said of what she did with her American teammates during any downtime they had
just to spend time with the team and the coaches.”
Sauro was one of seven Americans to make the trek to Italy
as three other girls from across the States (Rosie Mucharsky-O’Boyle
Milaina Almonte and Victoria Rodriguez) made up the four-person
Sauro is taking a beat just to catch her breath before the next moment in her young running career
and the course was really fun and challenging,” she said
I think I’m going to put some miles into running cross
but I’m just going to chill a little bit for now
I didn’t really think I would be where I am today without my friends
and I really appreciate every single company that donated

Last week, we saw Slightly Mad Studios reveal the different pre-order editions available for Project CARS 2. One thing was obvious: McLaren’s new 720S was the star of the show
we take a peek into how the British automaker assisted the game’s developers in making the 720S as close to reality as possible in PCARS 2
In the first video of a six-part film series
Slightly Mad Studios’ Vehicle Lead (Casey Ringley) and Physics R&D Lead (Andrew “AJ” Weber)
along with Pirelli’s Vitale Maffezini and McLaren’s Senior Vehicle Dynamics Engineer Mattia Saluzzo
After two years of testing all the McLarens in PCARS 2
Chris Goodwin approved of their handling and feel
Goodwin was not impressed with his first run of the game’s recreation of the new Super Series model
That’s when it was decided to bring in the whole crew
One of the biggest obstacles the game’s development team faced was the 720S’ active suspension and aerodynamics
Thanks to the data obtained from another test session in London
the team was able to adjust the in-game McLaren to bring it one step closer to reality
bringing in Pirelli’s Vitale Maffezini paid off
While looking at the patch pressure distribution sheets
Weber noticed a difference between the game’s SETA tire model and Pirelli’s
After changing all cars’ tire models in pCARS 2
the game’s 720S’ driving feel was transformed to match the real thing
In the end, working with real drivers seems to have been worth it, at least for Slightly Mad Studios. For those looking to be their own judge, Project CARS 2 will be arriving near the end of the year

The Hall on the second floor of the Old Town Hall houses the Picture Gallery dedicated to the painter Matteo Olivero (1879-1932)
Born in Acceglio in the upper Maira valley
developing a very personal style within the Italian Divisionism movement through his friendship with Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo and Giovanni Segantini
After training at the Accademia Albertina in Turin
Olivero moved to Saluzzo in 1905 and set up his studio in Salita al Castello
a few steps from the museum now dedicated to him
The collection of works by Matteo Olivero acquired by the Municipality of Saluzzo consists of what was found in his studio at the time of his death (1932)
conserved in the Historical Archive in Castiglia
A selection of the most significant works from the entire municipal collection is on display at the Pinacoteca: 67 paintings
with the aim of understanding the artist’s working method and the evolution of his style
The itinerary is divided into four exhibition areas on the basis of four themes (the time of social realism
his working method) to rediscover the human and artistic life of a great artist

which celebrate the solemnity of the mountains under the crystalline light of snowy winters
attention is drawn to the large Divisionist painting entitled “Morning: Upper Macra Valley”
exhibited in Paris in 1910: the painting is an exploit of bravery by the young Olivero at the height of his adhesion to Italian Divisionism

is working on the project "Identification of clinical

Eagles show the Roosters how it’s done in Edinburgh
Edinburgh ran out winners in a scoreline that did not reflect the effort and commitment of an Italian side who never gave up
The visitors chose to start the game and a promising first set of six for Edinburgh saw Mark Robertson run from inside his own half only to be tackled short of the try line
This was perhaps a sign of things to come although the early stages saw both sides complete their sets with neither dominating until a high ball from Eagles on the 5th tackle near the Saluzzo line wasn’t dealt with and Nick Hanmer was on hand to pick up the bouncing ball to run in under the post for the first try of the afternoon
converted by Stuart McBain to give Edinburgh a 6 – 0 lead
the Eagles continued to pressure the Roosters
disrupting their rhythm with some strong tackles and continuing to stay on top by allowing the ball do the work in the warm conditions
using the full width across the field as they sought to find a way through the Italian defensive line
This finally paid dividends when the hard running Doug Watters was on the end of a cross field movement in the left centre position to go over for the second try of the afternoon to give Eagles a 10-0 lead
neither side let the intensity drop and the defence from both teams was
ferocious which saw a number of players taken off for injuries
The enforced breaks in play did disrupt the flow of the game but not the determination of the Eagles to put on a good display in front of the onlooking spectators
who boasted two Scotland Rugby League representatives among then
all of whom would have been entertained with what they were seeing
Saluzzo had the first chance of the half to score but were unable to get over the whitewash
This resulted in an Eagles attack which saw a high ball bouncing desperately in the Saluzzo in-goal area and finally picked up by a Saluzzo player who was able to evade Eagles defenders to race down the field
much to the disappointment of the watching crowd who by this time wanted the visitors to score
Although the Saluzzo defence was tighter in the second half
Eagles remained in the mood to score and finish the game with two tries
the scorers were the same as those who rounded off the scoring in the first half. This time though
ran in on the left edge after running over two tired defenders to leave the final score at Eagles 44 – 4 Saluzzo North West Roosters
Eagles coach Barry McGuffog said; “I’d like to thank Paolo
staff and supporters who made the trip over and contested what was a highly entertaining game played in great spirit
They’re in a similar position to ourselves in terms domestic fixtures so play their regular rugby in the south of France.”
“Obviously it was disappointing that Strathmore pulled out on Friday afternoon
but after some quick discussions with Paolo at the Roosters and with our lads
we were able to get a full sided game arranged in place of the 9’s which ultimately will have benefited our guys more
We got another eighty minutes under our belts and were able to build on last week’s performance
righting a few wrongs and putting things we’ve practiced in training this week in place
We’ve got Cramlington away next week which allows us to continue building towards the cup game against Gateshead Storm on the 26th.”
Images from the match will appear here over the next few days

And speaking of the top of the class, the 1-0 victory on the Oltrepò pitch, thanks to Sganzerla's goal in the 14th minute of the second half, confirmed the crisis of the home team. The team coached by Maurizio Parolini is unable to break the taboo of San Contardo, where it hasn't won since last November 11, when it beat Asti 3-1. The team from Broni is in fact fourth from bottom with 26 points and in the playout zone.
