Italy holds claim to 58 UNESCO sites (the most of any nation)
with 31 additional sites on the tentative list right now
It’s incredible; all that history and enlightenment from a country slightly larger than the state of Arizona
And it means that no matter how many times you’ve been to Italy
I have made it a personal and professional goal to visit every region in Italy
I’m still lacking a few; I’m looking at you Friuli Venezia-Giulia
turns out I have been to 26 Italian UNESCO sites
and each one reminds me of how fortunate I am to do what I do
and to have been born in this cradle of Western civilization
I wanted to share a handful of my favorite sites with you
as picking favorites of anything in Italy is next to impossible
but I wanted to open a door to the places I love dearly
Few churches in the world breathe an atmosphere of intense and collective spirituality like The Basilica of San Francis of Assisi
the Basilica is the beating heart of the town in the province of Perugia
and a reference point for the entire Catholic world
the upper Basilica has a gabled façade made bright by a large rose window that’s flanked by a bell tower
The interior of the lower Basilica is bathed in famous frescoes by artists such as Giotto
the surroundings are darker and more intimate
It is no coincidence that the Crypt of San Francesco is accessed from the lower Basilica
walk under the arches of the outstretched portico in front of the entrance to the Basilica and take a moment to admire the panorama that surrounds you
Both the Basilica and the town of Assisi will always hold a special place in my heart
Francis is my “name saint,” or perhaps because San Francesco happens to be the Patron Saint of pets and animals (he has certainly looked out for my mischievous canine a time or two)
Verona is one of the oldest and most beautiful Italian cities
lovely Verona — a UNESCO site since 2000 — is one of the most beloved Italian cities (and my favorite)
visiting ancient Verona can provoke a mix of emotion
Enjoying an evening at the arena is a must
The arena is a Roman amphitheater that can hold 15,000 spectators
and an evening here alone justifies the trip
Contemporary artists who have held concerts here include Andrea Bocelli
it’s easy to feel transported thousands of years back in time
Enter Piazza Erbe (my favorite piazza in Verona)
Verona is also the birthplace of “Romeo and Juliet,” the protagonists of the famous Shakespearean tragedy
An immortal story that can be relived by visiting Casa Capuleti
be sure to look out on the balcony and swear your love to your beloved
In Verona it won’t be too difficult to soothe your sorrows in good food or wine
all washed down with a nice glass of Valpolicella or Amarone
and Verona will still have plenty to offer you
It’s not by coincidence that the Amalfi Coast happens to be the most popular culinary tour that I host
I don’t think there is a need to convince anyone to visit
the coastal stretch that overlooks the Gulf of Salerno and goes from Positano to Vietri sul Mare is pure wonder
the Amalfi Coast is most deserving of making the UNESCO cut
with its colorful houses and the domes of the churches with tiled roofs
and stop at Pasticceria Pansa afterwards for an espresso and a Delizia al Limone pastry
the smallest town in Italy with narrow alleys and houses that climb up a hill
A little farther north is Villa Cimbrone in Ravello with its splendid gardens and the Terrace of Infinity
worthwhile stops as you make your way along the coast
Vietri sul Mare is known for its splendid artistic ceramics
while Cetara is a small fishing village frozen in time
A unique destination that has fascinated travelers from all over the world for centuries
Florence is synonymous with the Renaissance
Donatello almost become travel companions during your visit to the city
Piazza della Signoria and the Boboli Gardens
monuments and museums is certainly an effective way to discover the charm of the Medici city adored by all who visit
museums and churches have run their course
one of my favorite activities is simply to become a Florentine for an hour
pastry and people-watching at one of the city’s famous cafes
but soon became a Concerto Café where the famous Paszkowski band performed with a female orchestra (very rare at the time)
Or perhaps enjoy an outdoor drink at Caffè Gilli
frequented in the past by artists and intellectuals such as Marinetti and Ardengo Soffici
perhaps one of Italy’s most misunderstood cities
is also on the list of favorite sites for me
for its uniqueness and for sentimental reasons
my first “big trip” as a young child living in Calabria was to Naples
Visit Naples because each district of the historic center has a unique soul
from the very central district of Montecalvario
without forgetting the Avvocata district and the Pendino district
among the areas of Naples richest in churches
but still in the historic center of Naples
there is the district of San Carlo all’Arena with the splendid Piazza Carlo III and the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli alle Croci
and screaming merchants shouting about their goods
They carry on with a smile as if hiding a secret
and they can make you feel at home immediately
proud to live there and proud of being from there
It’s practically impossible to have a bad meal here
“Vedi Napoli e puoi muori” is a famous saying that means
“See Naples and then die.” But why such a morbid saying
It is no coincidence that Rome is known worldwide as the “Eternal City.” In Rome
time seems to have stopped and its monuments and archaeological sites transform a simple walk through the streets of the city into a sublime dive through the millennia
Walking the streets of Rome means walking through history
You not only observe the many archaeological finds of the city
for a walk in Rome is a real immersion in its past
when gladiators fought within the walls of the Colosseum
Among the most popular tourist destinations in the world
with more than 16 million annual travelers
Rome is ranked third in terms of Europe’s most-visited cities
The center boasts mythical places such as the Imperial Forums
where you can breathe the true Roman spirit
made up of local culture and great cuisine
Without forgetting that Rome has the Vatican and St
among the most popular religious destinations in the world
After you have seen all the historical aspects of the city
perhaps consider paying homage to carbonara
The recipe for this iconic dish has been handed down for generations: eggs
Everyone has their own secret for its execution
San Gimignano is located in the province of Siena
surrounded by walls that are shadowed by high towers
Each tower corresponds to a family that once lived there
and I am sure it will not surprise you to learn that the higher the tower
the more noble and wealthy the family that lived there
It’s without a doubt one of the most beautiful villages in Tuscany
and its medieval center has earned the inclusion as a UNESCO site
The center goes back to the 13th and 14th centuries
what makes the village of San Gimignano special are in fact these ancient towers that in the distance still define the skyline of the town
There are two main entrances to the village
these are the two main “doors” to the historic center of San Gimignano
Porta San Giovanni is the entrance that we use typically when we visit during my Tuscan culinary adventures
and this gate has long been the most important in the city and welcomed those coming from Siena
Because any visit can be tied to the local cuisine and specialties
be sure to make a stop at Gelateria Dondoli
named by several organizations as the best gelateria in the world
Visiting Alberobello for me is like stepping into a fairytale village
The trulli are cone-shaped domed homes all very similar to one another that seemed to have risen from the pages of a fantasy novel
Alberobello has been listed among the UNESCO sites since 1996
and its historic center is divided into two districts: the Aia Piccola district where most of the citizens still live
where most of the trulli here are no longer being used as private homes
Curiosity would have one question how these little homes came to be
The town was born at the end of the 14th century
the trulli are the result of a scheme devised to avoid paying property taxes
The appearance of these constructions had to be deliberately precarious to give the impression of easily demolished buildings in the event of an inspection
The small size of the historic center makes Alberobello easily visited
and like many of the other UNESCO sites mentioned
places are touristy because they are worth visiting
Just a few of my favorite UNESCO sites in Italy for you to consider on your next visit
but certainly worth adding to your list of must-see stops include the canals of Venice

established in 1888 when Count Febo Edoardo Lucchesi Palli of the noble Campofranco family donated his extensive library to the state
The count donated not only his books and manuscripts but also furniture and shelving from his library
having them transported and adapted at his own expense
The rooms were then embellished by the city’s most sought-after artisans
The original collection consisted of more than 30,000 volumes (librettos
theatrical works and Japanese literature in the original language)
The collection includes many letters by opera composer Giuseppe Verdi; all the manuscripts and publications of the celebrated poet Salvatore Di Giacomo – who was also a librarian here; some 2,500 play scripts from the early 19th century and the Raffaele Viviani archive
spanning the entire career of the great Neapolitan actor and writer
It is hard to imagine that behind a gate on a busy avenue in Vomero is an agricultural business

The building also housed the Stock Exchange until 1992
when all trading activities were centralised in Milan
What many Neapolitans don’t know is that it’s still possible to visit the great hall of transactions
The immense neo-Renaissance hall is surrounded by columns interspersed with caryatids bearing lanterns or anchors

is so realistic that it has even been compared with the Veiled Christ statue in the Sansevero Chapel
and the new and inevitable injuries inflicted on the statue have only accentuated its dramatic effect
Built for Ferdinando Palasciano by architect Antonio Cipolla
the extraordinary Palumbo tower that flanks a palazzo dating from 1868 is clearly inspired by the medieval Palazzo Vecchio in Florence
The enchanting verdant garden around the tower

Although the tower stands out against the Neapolitan landscape and can be seen from afar
not many locals know that it is open to the public; it has recently been restored and converted into a bed and breakfast

this church was part of a large religious complex for women which was given its current name in 1565

has made history as the first transgender woman selected to compete in the Paralympic Games to be held this year
Here is a glimpse into her journey and transformation
Valentina Petrillo is a para-athlete who hails from Naples
within the tough neighborhood of San Carlo all'Arena
Petrillo always had a deep passion for sports
showing a natural talent across various disciplines
with a particular inclination toward running
Petrillo became well-known for her exceptional speed
she developed a profound admiration for athletics
She was particularly inspired by Pietro Mennea's triumph at the 1980 Moscow Olympics
which she still considers the most beautiful race in athletics history
It was during this period that her dream began to take shape—a dream that felt impossible to achieve
Petrillo yearned to wear the Italian national team's jersey and compete in the Olympics
she found herself suppressing her true identity
often projecting a harsh and aggressive male persona
battling against the woman she knew she was inside
the future sports star knew she was a woman
Petrillo encountered yet another stumbling block
her life took a challenging turn when she was diagnosed with Stargardt disease
Stargardt disease is an inherited eye condition that leads to vision loss
primarily affecting children and young adults
It is passed down from parents to their children through genetic inheritance
Petrillo's visual abilities are restricted to just 1/50th of the normal range, hence she is regarded as disabled. Therefore, becoming a Paralympian instead of an Olympian
The diagnosis was devastating for the athlete
forcing her to quickly reassess her childhood dreams
though her passion for athletics never wavered
Despite her determination, when she attempted to join an athletic club in Caserta, she faced rejection, being told that she "ran like a woman." At the age of 20
Petrillo moved to Bologna to pursue a degree in computer science at the Institute for the Blind
she was introduced to the world of Paralympic sports
As the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics approached
her coaches believed she had a strong chance of participating
she chose not to pursue this opportunity because she didn't feel complete or comfortable as a man
Although Petrillo spent a few years in athletics
she eventually transitioned to low-vision five-a-side soccer
earning multiple spots on the national team
She narrowly missed competing in the 2016 World Cup in South Korea due to an injury
Petrillo eventually returned to athletics because her operated knee no longer allowed her to perform certain movements necessary for soccer
She found it increasingly difficult to remain in masculine spaces or engage in such a physically demanding sport
the Italian native was beginning to confront her gender dysphoria
after a stellar season where she achieved all her personal bests
Petrillo decided to leave the men's world behind
she participated in her final men's sprinting competition
which affected her both physically and emotionally
Petrillo revealed that her metabolism changed and she became less energetic
this didn't prevent her from winning competitions
the sportswoman won 11 national titles in the male T12 category
which is designated for athletes with visual impairment
She fully transitioned in 2019. For the first few months, she put on 10lbs. "I can’t eat the way I did before, I became anaemic, my haemoglobin is low, I'm always cold, I don't have the same physical strength. [...] I'm not the same as before," she once explained
Petrillo experienced a decline in her performance
losing approximately 11 seconds in the 400-meter race and 2.5 seconds in her specialty
Petrillo found it challenging to accept that she wouldn't achieve the same speeds as before
She had to come to terms with this compromise
recognizing it as a necessary step for her happiness
The athlete shared her motto: "Better to be a slow happy woman than a fast unhappy man." Determined not to abandon competing
Petrillo found that athletics had always been her refuge; her legs became the strength that her eyes could not provide
Sports had always been a means of inclusion for her as a person with disability
Petrillo fulfilled her long-held dream by running alongside women
Valentina Petrillo competes in the 100m T12 event during the Italian Paralympic Athletics on September 11
she achieved yet another milestone by wearing the jersey of the Italian national team at the European Championships in Bydgoszcz
She made her country proud once again when she won bronze medals in the women's 200m and 400m events at the World Para Athletics Championships in 2023
Valentina Petrillo celebrates after the Women's 400m T12 Final at the Para Athletics World Championships in Paris on July 13
World Athletics imposed a ban on transgender women from competing in the female category at international events
announced that no transgender athlete who had undergone male puberty would be allowed to participate in female world ranking competitions
Valentina Petrillo competes in the Women's 400m T12 Final at the Para Athletics World Championships in Paris on July 13
To further explore the transgender eligibility guidelines, a working group was to be established. Coe clarified
"We're not saying no forever." Under the previous regulations
World Athletics required transgender women to lower their blood testosterone levels to a maximum of 5nmol/L
They also asked them maintain this threshold consistently for 12 months before being eligible to compete in the female category. Coe emphasized that the decision to change these rules was "guided by the overarching principle which is to protect the female category."
there is no unified stance in the world of sports regarding transgender inclusion
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) permits international sport governing bodies to establish their own policies on the matter
Petrillo is now poised to make history as the first openly transgender athlete to compete at the Paralympic Games
having been chosen to represent Italy in Para-athletics in Paris
The 50-year-old sprinter, who competes in the women's T12 classification for athletes with visual impairments, will race in the T12 200m and 400m events. Petrillo stated that her participation in the Games would serve as an "important symbol of inclusion."
When asked about her reaction to being selected for the Paralympics
Petrillo expressed that she had been waiting for this moment for three years and had done everything possible during that time to earn it

She emphasized that she deserved the selection and expressed her gratitude to the Italian Paralympic Federation and the Italian Paralympic Committee for their unwavering belief in her
Valentina Petrillo during the Italian Paralympic Athletics on September 11
Petrillo highlighted the historic significance of being the first transgender woman to compete at the Paralympics
recognizing it as an important symbol of inclusion
She acknowledged that while many people will have questions
only a small minority will truly understand her journey
When asked what she would say to those who oppose her presence in Paris
Petrillo stated that this is not merely a lifestyle choice for her—it is her true identity
like all transgender individuals who do not identify with their biological gender
or political ideology should not be discriminated against
which often impose rules based on a binary way of thinking
She asserted that it is the responsibility of the sporting world to find a solution
and excluding transgender athletes is not that solution
She concluded by noting that in the seven years since transgender athletes have been allowed to compete in the female category
there have been very few instances where they have stood out for their sporting achievements
While she rocks short blonde hair presently
Petrillo used to look fairly different before she transitioned
She had short brown hair and was almost bald with a clean-shaven look
the Paralympian also used to have thick eyebrows which now seem to be trimmed off a bit
judging by her current pictures on social media
the baldness on Petrillo's head is no longer apparent either as the multi-gold medalist now has full hair on the front of her head unlike before
the para-athlete world champion now puts on makeup unlike before she transitioned
Red lipstick seems to be her go-to and she often opts for a manicure with a red nail polish
Valentina Petrillo’s path to the Paralympic Games is a powerful symbol of resilience and inclusion
her journey challenges traditional sports norms and inspires others

After a long period of closure, the Cemetery of the Fontanelle of Naples is finally about to reopen its doors. However, with the reopening there will be major changes for visitors. The Municipality has announced a project to public-private collaboration involving the Curia for worship, the Community Foundation of San Gennaro for fundraising and the cooperative The Paranza, who will take care of the site management.
To ensure the hydrogeological security, improve the building structures and industrial plants, install a system of video surveillance, LED lighting and make the cemetery accessible at people with disabilities, the Municipality has already invested 200.000 €. In addition, others have been allocated 400.000 € to further improve internal security and resolve the infiltration from the overlying ground. These investments are aimed at creating an environment sure e cozy for visitors.
See this content on Instagram A post shared by Gaetano Manfredi (@manfredi_official)
La Community Foundation of San Gennaro has already collected a million euros to finance the project. However, to complete the necessary financing, they are still missing 60.000 €. President Pasquale Calemme said these funds will be used for a complete redevelopment of the Fontanelle Cemetery. The goal is to create an experience memorable for visitors, while preserving value cultural e religious tourism local.
One of the main changes concerns the access to the cemetery for the non-residents of the neighborhoods of the III Municipality (Stella and San Carlo all'Arena). Unlike in the past, the entrance will no longer be Loano train station for this category of visitors. Instead, a payment. Although the maximum cost of the ticket has been estimated by 7 to 10 euro according to the municipal authorities, this has sparked negative reactions from some city associations.
See this content on Instagram A post shared by Cimitero Delle Fontanelle (@cimiterodellefontanelle)
The Mayor Manfredi justified the introduction of the ticket fee as a necessary measure to ensure the sustainability
lack of funding led to the cemetery being closed for a long time
Manfredi stressed the importance of contributions from individuals and visitors to avoid prolonged closures and ensure the preservation of important cultural assets for future generations
The ticket will allow maintenance costs to be incurred
the lack of which led to the closure four years ago
If we don't want to have our properties closed for decades
we need the contribution of individuals and also that of visitors
