The journey of a life well-lived cannot be encapsulated in mere paragraphs and even though words can't fully show how we feel
we invite you to join us in remembering this incredible person and how much she meant to so many
we are filled with deep gratitude and admiration. You were born in San Giovanni in Fiore
Giovanni and Maria Lucente (Demarco) along with many beloved sisters and brothers. At just 12
you bravely took a month-long boat journey to Canada with your family to start a new life. You quickly taught yourself English by devouring “Readers Digest” so you could continue your life-long thirst for learning
graduating from University and Teachers College
and pursuing your Master’s Degree all whilst working full-time and raising four children. Through it all
pouring your heart and soul into making a loving
nurturing home. The steadfast commitment to education and your children's well-being was truly inspiring. They will forever be grateful for the sacrifices you made. Resilience
selflessness and the power of a mother's love to overcome any obstacle will remain your legacy
As the Executive Director of Women In Crisis
advocate and trailblazer. Your passion was to empower women and wow did you ever meet that goal by helping thousands of woman and children escape violence and begin new lives. Working with the local community and surrounding indigenous communities
as well volunteering on countless boards led to many honours and awards. Chatelaine recognized your grassroots advocacy when they chose you as the top 12 of “Who’s Who of Canadian Women” for that year. You declined their offer to fly you to Toronto as part of a ceremony with national media coverage. Although honoured
you said “it was never about that.”
Abbie Carricato. Who would’ve guessed he’d come in the form of a hockey coach. Opposites attracted! You spent 34 wonderful years together. While you loved books and politics
Abbie preferred golf and hockey. Somehow that worked for you as a couple. It was sweet how you doted on each other. You made him pasta fagioli and he brought your favourite treats. As a couple you both enjoyed family
great meals and a good teasing and laughs. Amazingly
shared the same grandkids (Mariah and Aaron) so you were able to act as his (Joe’s) surrogate grandparent which was very special. In the later years
you two moved to Niagara to join family and enjoy warmer weather.
The indelible love for your children: Lorne Conway (Cheryl)
Tim Conway and Darcie Conway (Mark) is so deep that it will be felt for the rest of their lives. All the homemade birthday cakes
non-judgemental and unwavering support and love. Even their friends adored you. As a co-parent to their father
you embodied the true meaning of “putting your kids first” ensuring they were nurtured and supported from every angle.
you remained deeply connected to your Italian roots
embracing your heritage and passing down traditions. You cooked the most delicious rustic meals with so much extra to send home with everyone. There wasn’t a pot big enough for all your sauce and meatballs. Now your grandkids are making these dishes they once cooked with you.
one of your favourite roles in life was of Nonna/Grandma/Nana to Kevin (Heidi)
Daniel and James. Your heart glowed with your great-grandkids Jet
Brixton and Laken. Their cheeks will forever be imprinted with your big kisses. Your optimism about the next generation had you believing wholeheartedly in their ability to shape a better world.
nephews and friends will forever carry the invaluable insights you shared through your lifelong dedication to reading
exploring spirituality and personal growth. They will cherish the profound wisdom you so generously and graciously shared with them.
you faced each challenge with grace and resilience. Your radiant smile shone brightly even in the face of pain. When others expressed their sympathy
you compassionately reminded them that you were not alone in your struggle. An infectious laugh and your mischievous jokes got everyone through. Your strength gave hope when there were no guarantees. You became the hospital floor’s “Honorary Grandma” and the nurses continued to visit you even when you returned home.
Your energy was extra radiant the months before your passing
you woke up every morning with a heart filled with gratitude and enthusiasm for the beauty that surrounded you in your home. The cheery birds at the feeders
the sun kissing your forehead through the big windows
and the laughter of your grandchildren – these were the sources of your healing
your own little oasis in the midst of life's uncertainties.
You are the heartbeat of our family and that will never change
Just by walking into a room your energy was so big and warm that it felt like a hug to all
valued and empowered to be their best selves. Because you believed everyone had that innate right.
Though you are no longer with us physically
your vibrant energy and spirit will continue to guide us. We will strive to honour your legacy by living our lives with the same strength
Your love and compassion made the world a brighter place. Thank you.
“Do not go gentle into that good night
rage against the dying of the light.”
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the hospital staff and nurses on 5A
Catharines Site. Special thank you to Dr
Kancherla and her surgical team for the exceptional level of care. Thank you to Dr
Cuthbert and the Oncology team on 3B and to Dr
Brick for his advocacy in the ER. We would also like to express our gratitude to Dr
Bassey and for the wonderful care provided by the Paramed and SE Homecare Nurses and PSW’s.

In the splendour of the Sila National Park
along whose shores it is possible to walk in the greenery
or simply stop for a picnic with typical Sila products
We are in the enchanting ski resort of Lorica
in the municipality of San Giovanni in Fiore
summer and autumn is tinged with the most beautiful colours of nature and welcomes groups of hikers and families who wish to spend a weekend at Lake Arvo
Ready to immerse yourself in a relaxing weekend in Lorica
The tourist village in the heart of Sila Grande
Lorica is strategically located to reach the area's most beautiful attractions: a stone's throw from the ski resort of Camigliatello Silano
the historic centre of San Giovanni in Fiore
famous for the presence of the important Abbazia Florense of Abbot Gioacchino da Fiore
The lake is one of the artificial reservoirs dotting Sila
tench and carp; along its banks nest all year round the Herring Gull
protagonist of the birdwatching activities that can be practised
Created between 1927 and 1931 to supply the area with hydroelectric power
Lake Arvo is today a true landmark for water and mountain sports in Calabria
Rowing competitions and bike boat activities take place on its surface
which literally means "floating bike" and which allows you to navigate Lake Arvo in the saddle of a special "two-wheeler": a bicycle on the water
mounted on two special floats that allow young and old to pedal on the surface of the lake
we recommend the unmissable thrill of the new zip-line on Lake Arvo
the only one in Italy to cross the entire surface of a lake
fully enjoying the thrill of being suspended on a 600-metre steel cable
as it is accessed by wearing a special harness
under the expert guidance of professionals
Quiet lovers and the ecologically-minded will find their ideal dimension on board the silent eco-friendly electric boat
for a gentle mini-cruise through the countryside
If lakeside sport and contact with nature have whetted your appetite
A weekend in Lorica can only end with a taste of typical products from Sila
The Cosenza Sila is criss-crossed by real "taste trails" that lead to some of Calabria's most renowned PDO and PGI products
It starts with the queen of the mountains: the Patata Silana PGI
The dense forests inhabited by the Sila wolf
give way to clearings where the tasty Patata della Sila PGI is cultivated
simply roasted in the ashes with the peel and seasoned with salt and a drizzle of oil
fried or as the basis for recipes and typical dishes
among which the traditional patate 'mbacchiùse and potatoes and peppers (pipi e patati) stand out
fruit of the dairy art of the local shepherds
to be enjoyed grilled or accompanied by a nice board of Calabrian Salumi PDO (pancetta
Two prized breeds graze in a semi-wild state among these woods
from which highly sought-after meat of absolute quality and healthy properties is obtained: the Podolica cattle breed and the Black Pig of Calabria
both of which are Slow Food Presidia and PAT (Traditional Food Product) categories

Starting off this list is the Bartley No. 1 mine explosion, located in Bartley, West Virginia
owned this mine and the accident occurred on January 10
An explosion rocked out killing 91 of them
The west side of the mine wasn't affected and the 37 men working there were able to leave unscathed
Rescue efforts were immediately organized by officials who happened to be meeting nearby
During these efforts a second explosion would occur
but thankfully no death or damage was caused by it
The suspected source of ignition was an electrical arc
which likely set fire to the coal dust in the air
The second accident on this list is the Centralia No. 5 Mine explosion, a mine that fittingly belonged to the Centralia Coal Company. Disaster struck on March 25
The disaster was first noticed at 3:26 p.m
when the assistant mine superintendent noticed that a fuse in the fan power circuit had blown out
This indicated that something had happened in the mine and he immediately went down the shaft only to find dust and smoke at the bottom
Rescue teams were sent out to find and bring back survivors of this explosion
with eight rescued and 24 escaping unaided
What was assumed to have happened was that an overburdened explosive charge stemmed with coal dust ignited the dust which then led to an explosion that coated four of the six working sections in flame and debris
The Orient No. 2 accident was another mine explosion. The Chicago, Wilmington and Franklin Coal Co. owned mine was located in West Frankfort, Illinois
The night shift entered the mine at the number 4 shaft around 6:25 p.m.
reaching the working sections about 20 to 30 minutes later
Four would be rescued with one later dying from injuries and 133 escaped uninjured
the night mine manager noticed that power had gone off inside the mine
He would investigate the shaft bottom and call company officials on the surface
The mine was known to be filled with methane gas
which was suspected to have been ignited by electrical equipment or smoking
The St. Paul No.2 Mine was owned by Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad and was located in Cherry, Illinois. On November 13, 1909, it would be the home of a fire that would end up killing 259 people
It started when a car containing six bales of hay was sent down from the surface to the third vein in order to feed the mules stabled underground
Due to electric malfunction kerosene torches were used and placed alongside the wall
When the car was pushed over to a stable area it came to rest under one of the open torches
Efforts to move the car away only spread the fire
the heat and smoke became more and more overpowering as the fire began the spread
a signal would be given to clear out the mine
but this order proved to be too late for many
The company running the mine was Phelps Dodge and Company
The mine employed about 300 men and was focused on cutting coal with machinery and hand-pick mining
blasts of smoke and debris burst out of the mine openings
blowing out the explosion doors and one side of the fan house
14 from an unaffected area were able to get out
and nine others would be rescued later by a crew
The explosion was estimated to have come from a dusty section where an overcharged explosive had been fired
lighting the coal dust and ultimately leading to this tragedy
The absolute deadliest United States mining disaster took place at the Monongah Mine
which the Fairmont Coal Company owned and which was located in Monongah
it was home to an explosion that killed 362 people
8 mines were slope openings a mile or so away from each other
things proceeding as usual until 10:28 a.m when the explosion occurred and killed almost all the workers
damaging the ventilation system and various motors and cars in the process
Rescue crews were able to save only 1 person
In the days afterward hundreds of bodies would be recovered from the wreckage
The cause of the explosion was contentious
with the most commonly accepted cause to be an arc from electric wires igniting the dust clouds

peacefully and fortified with the sacraments on January 19
Tony was the first-born of the late Angela Tedesco (nee Spadafora) and the late Giuseppe Tedesco
Michigan before returning to the metro Detroit area in 2021
Tony is predeceased by his cherished grandparents
aunts and uncles and in-laws Victor and Mary Servitto
siblings-in-law Edward and Katherine Servitto
Tony married the love of his life Rosemarie (nee Servitto) on July 21
this union was blessed with three children
Tony was blessed with two grandchildren Steven Kustra and his wife Dana
and Grace Murphy (nee Kustra) and her husband Curtis; and nine great-grandchildren with one on the way

As well as uncles Francesco (Maria) Spadafora and Giovanni (Franca) Spadafora
stories were a central part of Tony’s life
He could delight us with memories of his early years in Italy working in the vineyards
Then the story of his arrival from Italy to Ellis Island in the 1950s while still in his teens
and saving enough money to help bring his family to North America
Then he got married and started a family that he worked hard to support; first
the front-of-house icon of the family’s Italian restaurant-Franco’s
