Lamborghini's factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy, has been building supercars for 60 years
and the automaker has decided to celebrate this by publishing a look back at the factory's history
adding in-house assembly of transmissions and differentials in 1966
and the first facilities for working with carbon fiber in 1983
Production expanded from 67 cars in 1965 to 425 in 1971
fell to 55 cars in 1979 due to an economic downturn
Lamborghini was also building marine engines at the time
In line with changes in technology and government regulations
Lamborghini added research and development departments for electronics
The automaker came under the control of Audi in 1998
and the German automaker commissioned a major renovation of the Sant’Agata Bolognese facility that was completed in 2001
More recent additions have emphasized sustainability. In 2011, the automaker opened Lamborghini Park, with bee colonies to protect the honey-producing insects, as well as carbon-capture experiments conducted in partnership with the Municipality of Sant’Agata Bolognese and the Universities of Bologna, Bolzano, and Munich. A dedicated assembly line for the Urus SUV
earned the highest LEED Platinum certification for environmental impact
as did the factory's finishing department and an office building
encompassing electric all-wheel drive and a Recharge mode to keep a charge in the 3.8-kwh battery pack
was powered by a 3.9-litre V12 engine that made 369bhp

The Lamborghini Countach, launched in March 1974, marked a major shift for the Sant'Agata Bolognese automaker. It was the first Lamborghini with in-house bodywork and interiors
moving away from the company's previous reliance on specialised coachbuilders
This change streamlined production and gave Lamborghini more creative control
boosting its growth and solidifying its reputation for cutting-edge supercars
Lamborghini brought the original Countach LP 400 back for a photo shoot with its modern successor
Lamborghini’s Chief Manufacturing Officer Ranieri Niccoli said: 'We are proud to still be producing our super sports car models in the place where the Countach was created
Production has radically changed since then and there was a marked transformation of many aspects starting with the production of the Countach right through to today's models
Today our production is very different from 1974
but it retains the best aspects and brings together the manual skills of our operators and the best available technologies
giving rise to the so-called Manifattura Lamborghini Next Level
The common denominator between the production of the Countach and our cars today is attention to detail.'

In 1963 Ferruccio Lamborghini founded Automobili Lamborghini and built a new factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese
Construction of the facility proceeded rapidly
when Lamborghini revealed its first car
the main structure of the factory was already completed.
Today Automobili Lamborghini is a world-renowned company with over 2,000 employees that produces over 9,000 cars a year
Lamborghini’s headquarters has undergone upgrades
But has never left its original core structure
production reached 470 cars and 300 marine engines
In 1974 Ferruccio Lamborghini sold the company, and it went through a succession of owners. The Chrysler Corporation acquired it in 1987, shepherding the Diablo before selling the company to a Malaysian consortium in 1994. Then in 1998, Volkswagen AG acquired it
leading to a period of modernization and growth
The company opened the Lamborghini Centro Stile five years later in time for its 40th anniversary
using it to showcase classic Lamborghini cars
producing over 1,300 cars a year.
In 2008 the factory again expanded to include a modern finishing department and logistics center. Additional facilities followed those expansions to develop the Aventador's new carbon fiber body in-house
launching the Lamborghini Carbon Production center
Lamborghini production topped 2,000 cars a year and would quadruple production by 2020.
A big part of the production increase is attributed to the Lamborghini Urus
it quickly became the company's most popular model
the factor expanded again to 160,000 square meters
the equivalent of 1.7 million square feet
more than 13 times the size of the original factory in 1963.
but he would still recognize the company he founded
Today the headquarters remains in the Sant'Agata Bolognese region
and the factory's original road frontage with the proud Lamborghini sign is still the most prominent part of the facility.

Enzo Ferrari’s answer was a real challenge that he felt ready to collect: so he decided to start producing super-sports cars himself
Automobili Lamborghini was therefore founded in 1963 and was completed one year later on a site located in Sant’Agata Bolognese
From that moment Lamborghini started producing its super sports cars
which over the years will become the symbol of Design
traces this history of success and speed and was conceived as a sort of trait d’union between the historical part of the assembly plant and the new buildings

The Automobili Lamborghini Museum officially reopens following a redesign and new layout
with the event marking the start of Lamborghini’s 60th anniversary celebrations in an important year for the Sant’Agata Bolognese company. The museum has changed its name and been entirely remodeled
The newly-created exhibition “THE FUTURE BEGAN IN 1963”
retraces the most emblematic eras and representative moments that mark the history of Lamborghini’s first 60 years
The narrative begins with the evolution of the brand and its products from 1963 to the present day
starting with founder Ferruccio Lamborghini
telling the story of the brand and Lamborghini’s iconic technical and design heritage: innate principles that characterize the company’s DNA
“2023 will be a year full of original activities and developments
which opens with this new museum destination
We will celebrate our first sixty years through international events
which we will reveal during the year,” said Stephan Winkelmann
Chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini at the official opening of the museum
“We started from a challenge that Ferruccio Lamborghini took up at the beginning of the 1960s
which the company developed through pioneering and revolutionary ideas in the years that followed to write the history of the time and deliver innovations that have shaped the path of luxury super sports cars
Lamborghini always has and always will be a brand that never stops looking to the future.”

Visitors to Central Italy will now have a new reason to stop in Sant’Agata Bolognese
a small town that Lamborghini has called home for generations: The Italian supercar manufacturer has opened the doors to its freshly renovated museum
The museum itself dates back to 2001 but was growing a little rough around the edges
so Lamborghini took it upon itself to refresh things
visitors to the museum will follow the automaker chronologically
starting with the first vehicle it built in Sant'Agata
the first supercar to really help Lamborghini make a name for itself
Lamborghini looks to the future with a special display on SUVs
including the LM 002 prototype and the Urus concept car that is on track to reach showrooms in a couple of years
The museum certainly represents the largest collection of Lamborghinis on permanent display
A "family tree" is displayed as a piece of "wall art" that links all of the company's production cars together
Visitors can stop by the museum from 10 a.m
they can also book a ticket to visit the automaker's adjacent assembly line
It isn't clear if or when Google Maps will be updated to allow a look inside the new museum, but at least you can tour the way it used to look
Follow Motor Authority on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube
The next corner is dedicated to the Italian automaker’s SUV projects
with the LM002 “Rambo Lambo” displayed alongside the Urus concept
A family tree is mounted on the wall to chart the various models the company has produced over the last half century
with monitors highlighting each model – but there’s more metal to see on the next floor up
There you’ll find the full gamut of production Lambos
At the opposite side is a display dedicated to racing
with a pair of Lamborghini-powered F1 cars from the early 1990s
and steering wheels from the latest racing models to show visitors what it’s like to pilot one
Guests can even climb atop a podium for a photo with their own country’s flag on the monitor above
There’s also a section highlighting the company’s design department
and of course the requisite supercar (currently an Aventador Roadster) mounted on the far wall
This being the Miura’s 50th anniversary, the upper floor features a central display with the one-off roadster prototype accompanied by a bare rolling chassis. The renovated museum opened its doors in time to kick off the Miura Tour that’s sending 20 of the classic supercars on a 500-kilometer (310-mile) journey through the Italian countryside
The Italian Air Force marked the occasion with a flyover of four Eurofighters
The museum first opened in the same complex as the factory and headquarters in 2001. And while individual displays have shifted over the decade and a half since, this is the first time it has undergone such an extensive renovation. Having strolled through the museum not long ago
we’re looking forward to seeing all the changes on our next visit
