Today the Roman Martyrology commemorates St
convert from Judaism and a professed Priest of the Order of the Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel
Born in 1145 at Jerusalem and died by being stabbed to death in 1220 at Licata
Caterina Cittadini is also commemorated today
She was an Italian Roman Catholic religious from Bergamo who established the Ursuline Sisters of Saint Jerome Emiliani
The order was dedicated to the education of girls in Bergamo and in the surrounding areas and has since expanded outside of the Italian nation
leaving you an example that you should follow His steps" (Epistle)
The Christian slave might complain that his membership in the Church had not alleviated the harsh conditions of his life
Peter points to the example of Christ who was in all things to be the model of the Christian
neither was guile found in His mouth," but nevertheless he was subjected to persecution and injustice
But the Christian is expected to be a follower of Christ
but delivered Himself to him that judged Him unjustly." If then Christians feel that they have not achieved the liberty and the equality they long for
they are to remember that Christ had come not to right all the wrongs and injustices in the world
but to give an "example that you should follow His steps."
Men often complain against God when they suffer what they consider undeserved misfortunes
They think that God ought to interfere and punish injustice and wickedness here and now
They are like the apostles James and John; they want to call down fire from heaven and destroy those who appear to them to act improperly
Christ made it clear that all injustice will be rectified eventually
but that for the present He wishes to allow the cockle to grow among the wheat
When the proper time comes God will deal with injustice in His own way
But it is not only the slave who is to be subject to authority
and to recognize that mistreatment patiently borne is a service acceptable to God and meritorious for man
Obedience to legitimate authority does not depend on the worthiness of the official exercising authority
Christ Himself had commanded His disciples to obey the officials of the Jewish Church
even though they might not be personally worthy of the office they held
He was obedient first of all to His parents
"He went down with them and came to Nazareth
He observed the ritual and the laws of the Jewish Church
He obeyed the laws of the Roman authorities and paid the tribute they demanded
He set off on a Genoese ship on 1 April 1219 and stopped first in Messina before heading off to Civitavecchia before he ended up in Rome to meet with the pope
The friar preached in the Basilica of Saint John Lateran while in Rome where he met both Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Dominic
He foretold that Francis would receive the stigmata while Francis foretold his premature death.st angelus of jerusalem snip From there he was a guest of the Basilians in Palermo where he was for about a month
before preaching in Agrigento for over a month before settling in Licata
He had healed seven lepers and the ailing Archbishop of Palermo Bernardo de Castanea while in Palermo
He settled on the Sicilian island though his fame as a wonderworker caused crowds to flock to him
He also had success in converting some Jews though most Jews in Palermo came to despise him for this since he himself was once Jewish
He wanted to convert a Knight named Berenger
Catholic tradition states that Berenger was living in incest and that Angelo convinced the knight’s companion to leave him
Berenger became enraged and arranged to have him attacked and murdered
in front of the Church of Saints Filippo and Giacomo in Licata
He didn’t die from the attack until four days after the attack and during that time
he prayed for his assassin and asked the civil authorities to pardon him
setting an example for all those that he preached to
He was buried at Saints Filippo and Giacomo Church
His sepulchre at Licata quickly became a site of Pilgrimage
Symbols and Representation: Carmelite with a knife in his head; Carmelite with a sword in his breast
and three crowns; Carmelite with an angel bringing him three crowns; Carmelite with lilies and roses falling from his mouth
The sisters left the orphanage in 1823 to live with their cousins Giovanni and Antonio Cittadini
Caterina became a teacher at a girl‘s public school in Somasca in 1824
The sisters felt a call to the religious life; their spiritual director recommended that they should stay in Somasca
and become the basis of a new congregation
In 1826 the sisters rented a house in Somasca
and in October opened a boarding school for girls
and instituted the oratory style of education for her girls
The sisters established another “Cittadini” private school in 1832
Giuditta directed these new school until her sudden death in 1840
followed quickly by her spiritual director from the orphanage
The rapid succession of tragedy ruined Caterina’s health
but was cured through the intercession of Saint Jerome Emilani
Caterina quit her public teaching position in 1845 to manage the schools
and guide the three companions who help her
To help organize the work and lives of her companions
she wrote the beginnings of a new rule similar to that of religious orders
In 1850 she obtained permission to build a private oratory to keep the Blessed Sacrament at her boarding school
In 1851 she applied for approval of her new religious family
and told her to write the rules of the new order; her first attempt
based on the Constitution of the Ursulines of Milano was rejected
A second attempt was accepted on 17 September 1854 under the title Orsoline Gerolimiane (Ursuline Sisters of Somasca)
the bishop of Bergamo gave his approval; the order achieved papal recognition on 8 July 1927
and to care for the abandoned; today they work in Italy
Maria Francesca Cabrini was born on July 15
and she was determined from childhood to make religious work her life’s vocation
After teaching in Italy in Vidardo (1872–74)
she was appointed supervisor of an orphanage in Codogno (1874)
In 1877 she took her vows and changed her name in honor of St
after Pope Leo XIII recruited her to aid the waves of poor and vulnerable immigrants who streamed through Ellis Island (Mother Cabrini had tenaciously lobbied the Vatican to head East and spread the word of God)
She organized catechism and education classes for Italian immigrants and provided for the needs of thousands of children
She was as resourceful as she was prayerful
She has a shrine in Upper Manhattan, her image can be found on the bronze doors of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Midtown and her monument rests at Battery Park City Esplanade:
remembering always that the salvation of many souls is entrusted to our charity
but if we have faith and trust in Him who comforts us
she was an icon who defied incalculable odds while pursuing a higher mission

then on TV and in movies — helped seal her legacy

I’ve grown in friendship with this remarkable saint a lot since visiting the Mother Cabrini Shrine in Golden
the more I’ve realized the surprising paradoxes that pepper her story
so she founded her own orderMaria Francesca Cabrini was born in the small village of Sant’ Angelo Lodigiano
She felt a call to religious life from a young age
This physical frailty led her to being rejected
by already established religious communities
But if God wants you to be his spouse and you keep your heart open
After being the headmistress of an orphanage in Italy for six years
Cabrini received the call from the Lord to start her own missionary community
She felt at the beginning particularly called to serve the orphans
Jesus finally fulfilled her desire to give herself totally to him
she took the name “Frances” in honor of St
the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart
fill them with small flowers that she called “missionaries,” and sail them on the water
Consider her surprise—and ponder her great docility to the will of God—when she was asked to go in the opposite direction
In 1887 Cabrini went to Rome to ask Pope Leo XIII permission for her community to go to China
but to the West!” He saw the potential in her and her community to profoundly help the Italian immigrants in the United States
Cabrini submitted her will to the will of the Lord and took a small band of sisters west to America
Cabrini eventually found herself as far as West can be in Los Angeles
the Lord allowed her to face her fears and conquer them- again and again and again
What with voyaging between the United States and Europe
as well as between North and South America
she travelled enough to earn the nickname of “God’s Gypsy”
but is now the patron of all who suffer from the disease
Mother Cabrini lived an extraordinarily active life
Working to her last breath in service of the orphans whom she loved so dearly
she died of complications from malaria on December 22
Mother Cabrini had a big heart wide open to the poor
Her generosity is an inspiration and a challenge for all of us to also live with hearts wide open
and his timing over her own thoughts and desires
This is a testament to the truth that he “works all things together for the good of those who love him” (Rom
The Catholic Church in America celebrates her feast day on November 13
that we too live with her same generosity of spirit:
which once breathed over the chaos of the earth
give life to all the powers of my soul.”
The Milwaukee Bucks have added another veteran player who's familiar with Doc Rivers' coaching style
Veteran forward Danilo Gallinari officially signed Thursday with the Bucks for the rest of the season after playing a combined 32 games with Washington and Detroit this season
He's expected to provide some perimeter scoring off the bench and give the team depth at the forward spots
Gallinari plays both forward spots and fits what's called a "stretch-four" in the NBA due to his length and ability to make shots from the perimeter
Gallinari is a consistent perimeter shooter who has made 38.2% of his three-point attempts over his long NBA career. He's averaged 15.2 points a game
averaging double figures in 11 of his 14 seasons
How many teams has Danilo Gallinari played for in the NBA?The Bucks are Gallinari's third team this season
and the eighth team he's played in games with overall
He's played with the New York Knicks (2008-2011)
Washington Wizards (2024) and Detroit Pistons (2024)
Gallinari was also under contract with the Boston Celtics in 2022-23 but missed the season due to a torn ACL
Was Danilo Gallinari selected in the NBA draft?Yes
6 pick of the 2008 draft by the New York Knicks
he played with three Italian teams from 2004 to 2008
Rivers coached Gallinari while with the Los Angeles Clippers from 2017 to 2019
He's averaged 13.8 points a game in six seasons and shot nearly 40% from the three-point arc
The new movie “Cabrini” will be in theaters by the time you read this
and it is a sumptuous film from director Alejandro Gomez Monteverde
the Italian Catholic sister who founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
The film goes into great detail to portray how she offered support to Italian immigrants coming to America
The film depicts many milestone events in her life
including her relationship with Enrico Caruso
the first great recording artist of the 20th century
their paths would cross and they would both have an impact on each other’s lives
The movie stars acclaimed actress Cristiana Dell’Anna as Mother Cabrini
We get a glimpse into her childhood in Sant’Angelo Lodigiano
where she suffered from poor health after nearly drowning as a child
before dedicating herself to helping others despite facing numerous struggles of her own
the film features hauntingly beautiful music that helps propel the story of Mother Carini’s devotion and dedication to helping those less fortunate
as she helped champion the establishment of hospitals
all run by women and located all over the world
Renowned operatic vocalist Christopher Macchio performs the part of Caruso
in a fictionalized encounter with Mother Carini that occurs halfway through the film
when Mother Cabrini first comes to him asking for support to help her cause
“I won’t be involved in any scheme that involves the Church.”
when she has a group of children serenade him outside his window
his heart melts and he gives in by staging a performance of “Pagliacci” in New York to raise money for her
Mother Cabrini came to New York City in 1889 when Caruso would have been 16 years old
“Taking on this role was fantastic,” Macchio says
“Anytime you get the chance to play an operatic artist that has made such an impact on the world is a beautiful thing
Caruso always had an altruistic spirit that he carried with him wherever he went.”
Macchio further credits Caruso’s artistic integrity with motivating him to always help others
he helped to raise the profile of Italians in America at the turn of the last century
“He represented a shift in the perception of Italian Americans,” Macchio added
“He was one of the few who was regarded even by the elite of New York as worthy of being in their social ranks and was welcomed into their community in a way almost all other Italians were not.”
Macchio believes that Caruso helped blaze the trail for Italians so that they could go into different professions
including the civil service where they could become cops and firefighters
“He played such a large role in starting that shift in the public consciousness
and it was very important and impactful for the entire Italian American immigrant community from that point on,” said Macchio
and baptized one day later at the Catholic Church of San Giovanni e Paolo in Naples
Italy (possibly a nod to the fictional Giovanni in the movie)
His father was a mechanic and foundry worker
and he was encouraged in his musical career by his mother
he worked as a street singer and performed in cafes in Naples
made his stage debut in 1895 at the age of 22
and by the turn of the century he was performing at various theaters throughout Italy
One of his first major roles was playing the part of Rodolfo in Puccini’s “La Boheme,” with Arturo Toscanini conducting
In 1902 he made his first recordings for the Gramophone Company in Milan
He also charted 45 songs on the music charts between 1907 and 1921
including three international number one hits: “I Pagliacci-Vesti La Giubba (On with the Play),” “Love is Mine,” and “Over There.”
Caruso can be heard singing “Santa Lucia” and “Tarantella Sincera.” He was also one of the first music industry success stories
investing a large portion of his record royalties in lucrative enterprises
Caruso inspired a number of artists throughout the 20th and 21st centuries
including Richard Tucker; Luciano Pavarotti; Andrea Bocelli
whose 11-year-old daughter Virginia appears in the movie; and Mario Lanza
who played the tenor in the 1951 movie “The Great Caruso.”
Macchio has a new film in the works bringing the Caruso-Lanza connection full circle
Caruso came first and then Lanza came along in the 1950s,” explained Macchio
“Just as Lanza played Caruso in “The Great Caruso,” it is my aspiration to play Mario Lanza on Broadway and in film and to pull that thread and connect all three of us
I want to play Mario Lanza playing Caruso.”
Caruso’s magnificent legacy also played a large part in inspiring Macchio to pursue a career in opera. The world-renowned tenor has performed in some of the most esteemed venues around the globe
The Manhattan School of Music Conservatory graduate has entertained presidents and kings
performing the great pop songbook of legends like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin
along with the operatic pieces of Pavarotti
Macchio sees Cabrini and Caruso as being purveyors of both artistic substance and spiritual substance
attributes he believes are lacking in today’s public forum and public discourse
“That’s why movies like ‘Cabrini’ and the movie ‘Sound of Freedom’ that came before it from the same director
“They represent something uplifting and substantial and that’s why these films resonate so much with today’s audience
To show people like Mother Cabrini and Enrico Caruso
who were able to give so much of themselves
I hope the movie does Mother Cabrini justice. I know there are some fictionalized accounts and characters, but there’s so much that can be learned from the real Mother Cabrini. There’s a book with a collection of her letters that was released last month called “Letters From the Travels of St. Frances Cabrini” https://www.cabriniletters.com
Reading her letters is the best way to get to know this amazing woman of faith

WINDSOR TERRACE — The story behind the Mother Cabrini statue unveiled by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in a ceremony in Battery Park on Oct
12 is one of perseverance and artistic vision
Giancarlo Biagi and his adopted daughter Jill Burkee-Biagi
gave The Tablet an inside view of their process from concept to completion
depicting a young Mother Cabrini in a small boat with two children
stands in a cove in Battery Park across New York Harbor from the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
She was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1946 and four years later she was named the Patron Saint of Immigrants
The statue was completed in a remarkably short time — nine months — which Jill Burkee-Biagi said was because she and Giancarlo have been working together as an artistic team for decades and have created a shorthand in their work process
26 by the Mother Cabrini Memorial Commission from among several artists who submitted designs
They had to overcome several obstacles during the creative process
but they were determined to get the job done
They initially planned to work on the project in Italy
but COVID-19 lockdowns in that country prevented them from traveling there
They needed to be near a foundry to have the bronze sculpture cast
They planned to work in New York but again
COVID-19 interfered with their plans because of another lockdown
The artists finally wound up driving to Loveland
in order to do this work,” Giancarlo told The Tablet
They took their inspiration from Mother Cabrini
“She had so much determination; she overcame the odds,” Jill told The Tablet
the Biagis’ goal was to pay tribute to Mother Cabrini by incorporating facets of her life in Italy into the design
They also wanted the artwork to have universality in its appeal to the viewer
“We are all immigrants in one way or another
We all share the immigrant experience,” Giancarlo said
The boat depicted in the statue is meant to represent a paper boat
She made boats out of paper and filled them with violets
before casting the flower-filled boats into the river and watching as the currents carried them away
She wanted the boats to serve as her missionaries to the world
Mother Cabrini’s devotion to education also figured into the design — the girl in the boat is carrying a book. Mother Cabrini founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and founded 67 schools
the needy was vital to her,” Giancarlo said
The boy is carrying a musical instrument known as an ocarina
representing the music and culture that immigrants bring with them from their native lands when they come to America
The artists also gave careful thought to the statue’s immediate surroundings
“Those are river bed stones,” Giancarlo said
which come from a river near Mother Cabrini’s home in Italy
The stones were obtained with the help of Mother Maria Barbagallo
who is in charge of a museum dedicated to Mother Cabrini in her hometown
The sculpture was built using a centuries-old process known as lost-wax casting
It involves creating a duplicate metal sculpture (in this case bronze) from an original sculpture
The Biagis said they were honored to have been selected by the commission
co-chaired by Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio and Angelo Vivolo
president of the Columbus Citizens Foundation
can be found in art galleries and museums worldwide
studied at the Istituto d’Arte Stagio Stagi of Pietrasanta
to study at the Art Students League of New York
studied at the University of Washington and received a fellowship to work and study art in Pietrasanta
the Biagis maintain studios in New York and Pietrasanta
Born Maria Francesca Cabrini in Sant'Angelo Lodigiano
but was refused because of her poor health
So she dedicated herself to running an orphanage instead
formed the first nucleus of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart
under the protection of Saint Francis Xavier
When she eventually pronounced her religious vows
She understood that the modern world would be marked by huge migratory flows and by men
and children fleeing their homes to find peace and a better future
Frances Xavier Cabrini that emerges from the reflections of Pope Francis
In a Letter to the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
the Pope underlines how Saint Frances "welcomed a special missionary vocation from God: to train and send out consecrated women to the whole world
not simply as auxiliaries of religious institutes or male missionaries
but with their own charism of feminine consecration
in full and total availability for collaboration with both local Churches and the various congregations that were dedicated to the proclamation of the Gospel ad gentes”
It was that missionary charism that brought her to the United States to assist Italian migrants who were seeking their fortune there
and uncertainties of those who left everything in order to search for a better future elsewhere
her charitable works continued to include caring for orphans and the sick
Proclaimed a saint by Pope Pius XII on the 7 July 1946
she was proclaimed "Celestial Patroness of all Emigrants" in 1950
St Frances Xavier Cabrini died on 22 December 1917 in the hospital for migrants she herself had built in Chicago
Her mortal remains were later moved to Mother Cabrini High School in New York
a new statue dedicated to Mother Cabrini was unveiled by Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City’s Battery Park
Located just south of the South Cove on the Battery Park Esplanade
the statue is in honor of Saint Frances Xavier (Mother) Cabrini
Born in Sant’Angelo Lodigiano in modern-day Italy in 1850
Mother Cabrini was the first American citizen to be made a saint by the Roman Catholic Church
Mother Cabrini also established hospitals in New York City (Columbus Hospital and Italian Hospital which merged into Cabrini Hospital)
Mother Cabrini died in Chicago on December 22
ten years after fulfilling her dream of becoming an American citizen
She was interred at her orphanage in West Park
was brought to her congregation’s international motherhouse in Rome

which is located at 701 Fort Washington Avenue
which was named in her honor) and view Mother Cabrini’s body

Governor Cuomo announced plans for the creation of a Mother Cabrini statue and memorial on Columbus Day 2019. The announcement came in the wake of controversy surrounding the She Built NYC initiative from Mayor de Blasio and his wife Chirlaine McCray
She Built NYC will add five new statues of women in New York City
the first African-American woman to serve in Congress
The five women were selected in part through a public voting process
A spokesman for She Built NYC stated at the time that she had not been selected because tributes already existed
The resulting public relations storm was swift amidst the Italian-American community
particularly as Columbus Day was nearing last year
and the actor Chazz Palminteri said that the snub of Cabrini by McCray was racist on WABC radio: “Absolutely
If you’re an Italian American and you’re listening to us right now
The sculpture was designed and created by the sculptors Jill Burkee-Biagi and Giancarlo Biagi. At yesterday’s event, Cuomo said “

Pigs injured and immersed in sewage: farm supplier of PDO ham reported
Our latest investigation into a pig farm destined for the production of PDO ham in the Lodi area shows very serious mistreatment
During a first visit into the pig farm located in the municipality of Sant’Angelo
our investigators documented a critical situation
primarily due to the accumulation of hundreds of piglet carcasses which had been disposed of illegally
the investigators decided to place a hidden camera inside one of the company’s warehouses
Images recorded by investigators during their first visit show animals with wounds and injuries
and dozens of buckets containing the corpses of piglets abandoned in front of cages and outside the farm
Inside the farrowing cages there were dead and dying piglets
some with their legs or other body parts wedged into the structure and flooring
without environmental enrichments and with various parts dangerous and in ruins
This could explain both the presence of injured animals and the high mortality of piglets
The hygiene failures are also very obvious: animals forced to live in their manure
which is illegal if carried out systematically
The videos taken by the hidden camera show further problems
and in this case mainly involve farm staff: a worker who kills two piglets by banging them violently against the wall; some staff members who brutally handle some piglets
inadequately grabbing them by the paws and throwing them into the pens; and a worker laying the testicles of a newly neutered piglets in the sow’s manger
we sent a report to Cremona NAS (Commodities and Health Unit of the Italian police)
while a subsequent check by ATS (Health Protection Agency) in Milan confirmed various urgent issues relating to animal welfare
such as the presence of 20 pigs with lameness and “serious” injuries
and 20 with “minor” injuries which
instead of being hospitalized in an area used as an infirmary
were left in the enclosures together with the other animals
replace damaged parts of structures capable of injuring animals
With regard to the violent behavior of the operators
we filed a complaint with the Lodi Public Prosecutor’s Office against the legal representative and the workers involved for the crimes of killing animals (544 bis of the criminal code) and mistreatment of animals (544 ter of the criminal code)
The situation that our investigators found in the Sant’Angelo Lodigiano pig farm is by no means an exception in the intensive farming system
we ask the Italian Parliament and Government to intervene urgently to change the current system of controls on farms
because it is clear that there are many offenses that escape official inspections
we think it is essential to start a path that facilitates the abandonment of intensive production methods towards more sustainable systems
Ministro dell’Agricoltura e della Sovranità alimentare
Ministero dell’Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica
In recent years Essere Animali has published several investigations carried out inside Italian factory farms and slaughterhouses
some realized in collaboration with important and influential Italian and international media
in order to document and denounce the conditions of animals bred for food to the Italian judicial authorities and institutions
violations of animal protection laws and criminal code regulations were filmed
Essere Animali investigations have revealed:
Several complaints have been filed with the competent authorities for these mistreatments
filmed in almost all of the farms under investigation chosen on a random basis throughout the country
Essere Animali’s investigations have also shown types and practices of livestock farming that
cause unquestionable physical and psychological suffering to animals
thus intrinsically violating respect for the welfare of animals on farms
I therefore call for a process of legislative reform that will:

ITALY - MAY 23: Sandro Tonali (R) of AC Milan and Davide Calabria (L) celebrates during the Serie A Victory Parade on May 23
(Photo by AC Milan/AC Milan via Getty Images)
The former Brescia player spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport and had this to say:
I was a child on the street in Sant'Angelo Lodigiano
but I only realized what we did once we got back to Casa Milan
I read the emotion in the eyes of the people around us
I decided not to take the phone in hand for videos or photos
I had to live these moments and then always keep them with me."
but dreaming costs nothing and so in the future I would like to try to win the Champions League with this shirt
I have to add others from outside and improve in the choice of the tackles timing
too many times I expose myself to the risk of a yellow card
"Reducing my salary for Milan was my last thought
I am so attached to these colors that I know that my extension will never be a problem
it is right that the club thinks first of the expiring teammates than of me
I already have an agreement for another four years
Watching him follow the game standing on the bench is worth more than a thousand gestures
he is a champion who thinks of others first
I think the best player of the season is Leao for the games he made us win when we were in trouble
and website in this browser for the next time I comment
