ShareSaveCommentLifestyleDiningFour Brothers At Tenuta Sant’Antonio Are Working To Improve The Image Of The Wines Of VenetoByJohn Mariani
Forbes contributors publish independent expert analyses and insights
Twilight at Tenuta Sant'Antonio in Italy's Veneto wine region
The wines of Veneto have never garnered the attention or prices of those of Piedmont or Tuscany
even though Prosecco is a huge seller worldwide and its triad of Valpolicella
Bardolino and Soave have for half a century been among the best-selling easy-to-drink wines from Italy
a big -bodied red made from the Corvino grape
has a higher reputation but it’s been relegated to the special occasion category
The Castagnedi family that owns Tenuta Sant’Antonio winery has been a leader in trying to change the image of Veneto wines
evolving from the strict DOC and DOCG regulations of the byzantine Italian wine laws to improve the varietals
as well as making IGT wines that allow wineries to experiment with any grapes they wish to make modern Veneto wines
Tenuta Sant'Antonio has always been a family affair
now run by four brothers of the Castagnedi ..
It's always been a family affair: Antonio Castagnedi grew grapes in the Illasi Valley of eastern Valpolicella and left 50 acres of vineyards to his four sons: Armando
Armando sat down with me to taste and talk about what he and his brothers are trying hard to accomplish in Veneto
How long has Tenuta Sant'Antonio been a family winery and who in the family is in charge of what aspects
Tenuta Sant'Antonio was established in 1995
born from a dream of the four Castagnedi brothers who
set out to create iconic wines guided by research
The Castagnedis gave a new interpretation to the Valpolicella and Soave DOC terroirs while honoring the trademarks of Veneto
Italy’s winemaking traditions and production
Tenuta Sant’Antonio is an ambitious and ever evolving winery where we put rigorous quality at its backbone
The benefits of being a family-owned winery is that we can divide our areas of expertise accordingly
I am now head of export and management; Tiziano is head of Italian market and logistics; Paolo is head of product; and Massimo head of agronomics
The grapes of Veneto are used to make an innovative wine at Tenuta Sant'Antonio called Sciaia
The SCAIA Project was born in 2006 from the desire to diversify our audience and deliver dynamically unconventional wines
SCAIA is dedicated to Veneto IGT wines that embody Veronese creativity
while Tenuta Sant’Antonio is dedicated to DOC and DOCG wines that uphold the traditions of the Valpolicella
Both are dedicated to showcasing the terroir in its purest form
This strategic commercial diversification choice to move outside the DOC regulations allows us to expand our audience
targeting those who are open to drinking and learning about wines outside the Soave and Valpolicella DOC
How are your DOC and DOCG wines different from your IGTs
we carry on the history and symbolism of the denomination to protect the value of the territory by a unique drying process (appassimento)
calcareous and volcanic vineyards and terroirs
IGT wines represent the flexibility of a denomination when we are allowed to follow consumer trends dynamically
react promptly and serve quality wine to new consumers
The less restrictive IGT also allows us more avenues to serve those who are seeking wines linked to contemporary and creative styles of winemaking
Do you think the Italian wine laws have allowed too many varietals to have so many DOCGs
From a practical and commercial standpoint
I can’t deny that the multitude of denominations makes it difficult for consumers to grasp the image of Italy and understand each denomination
One of the main factors that has led to this confusion is the competitive history between provinces
locals from one province to the next have created specific production rules and traditions that purposely oppose others in order to be more distinctive and superior to the competition
There is also the added element of varied terroir and microclimates
which creates different growing conditions
making grape varieties vastly different from region to region
All these factors have sparked a desire to enhance the individual nuances of each region and regulate their quality with DOC and DOCG guidelines to protect each denomination’s unique identity
What is the difference between Valpolicella
Valpolicella Superiore and Valpolicella Ripasso
require the wine to be made with Corvina and Rondinella grapes
The Valpolicella Superiore regulations require 12% volume of alcohol in the base wine
With the La Bandina Valpolicella Superiore DOC
we want the wine to express a style intrinsically connected to the terroir
La Bandina is the best example of the Superiore status because all grapes that go into this wine are from a small vineyard—less than six hectares—solely dedicated to La Bandina
For the Valpolicella DOC Ripasso the difference lies in the historical Ripasso (“re-passed”) technique
in which the base wine is passed over the fermented skins of the Amarone grapes
The grapes used for Amarone are allowed to dry and shrivel so as to intensify the sugars that will ..
What is the difference between Amarone and Amarone Recioto
The macro differences lie in the style of the wines
The grapes are the same and the drying process is similar
which creates more residual sugar in the musts
this sugar is all consumed and transformed into alcohol
only a fraction of the sugar turns into alcohol
which leaves residual sugar to make the wine sweet
Tenuta Sant'Antonio Amarones are made in a lighter style to appeal to a contemporary audience
But in recent years they have become more drinkable earlier
we can conclude that the differences in flavors relate to the limestone soils and the altitude of our vineyards
which produce refined wines lighter in style
which are moving towards fresher and lighter flavors
This technological evolution has allowed us to understand ever evolving taste preferences and create wines that reflect our vision and style
How do you separate the Valpolicella grapes to determine what goes into Amarone
The grape harvest for Amarone is based on two fundamental criteria: selection and detail
110 quintals of grapes can be harvested from a single hectare of vineyard
and 50% of this total can be used for Amarone
For these grapes to endure the drying process
To ensure the fruit meets our quality standards
we hand-select each cluster in a multi-step process from the same vineyard
and quality and free of broken berries with higher base acidity versus the standard Valpolicella fruit are selected
in dedicated vineyards according to the vineyard's historical significance and best exposures
the second harvest of the remaining 50% of the grapes begins
These grapes will form the base for Valpolicella Ripasso
a wine closely linked to Amarone production due to its re-fermentation on the skins
Has Veneto's inland northern environment protected the region from global warming
Is your Monti Garbi your highest elevation vineyard
It is good practice to think not only of today but of tomorrow
with a vision that preserves the land and has a lower impact on the health of people and the planet
For years we have implemented sustainable practices
such as re-evaluating the Pergola Veronese system versus the Guyot system
grapes and safeguards the humidity in the soil
We have also implemented new irrigation techniques that preserve water from dispersion
seemed an insurmountable feat when we purchased the vineyard in 1989
but today it proves to be a winning choice for the changing climate and temperature due to its natural ventilation management
We strongly believe in honoring our terroir
which does not touch the Prosecco production area
Staying focused on what connects us to the land

an archaeological gem discovered in 1974 in the town of Sant’Antonio Abate
was buried under three meters of lapilli during the catastrophic eruption that destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD
this rural residence is characterized by its service rooms arranged around a courtyard with unplastered brick columns
highlighting its productive function within the Roman agricultural world
archaeologists found mural paintings in Villa Cuomo depicting grape harvesting scenes linked to the cult of Dionysus/Bacchus
These paintings document agricultural techniques of the time and reflect the importance of wine in social and religious life
The grape harvest was not just labor but a ritual of abundance and community dedicated to Bacchus
explained a spokesperson for the archaeological team
To ensure the preservation of these valuable paintings
diagnostic studies have been initiated under the direction of Dr
These investigations include non-invasive techniques and laboratory analyses of small samples taken from the paintings
The first study conducted was X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrophotometry
a technique that allows for the identification of the chemical elements composing the pictorial layers
The results obtained will be key in determining the painting technique used and in defining the best method for restoring and conserving these works of art
These analyses will provide a better understanding of the composition of the pigments and materials used by the ancient Romans
offering valuable insight into the artistic practices of the time
The restoration and enhancement work on Villa Cuomo represents a significant advancement in protecting the historical heritage of the metropolitan area of Naples
Thanks to the efforts of the Soprintendenza ABAP and the dedication of the specialists involved
this archaeological site will be appreciated by present and future generations
This space will not only showcase the past but will also invite reflection on our rural roots and their relevance today
Authorities have emphasized the importance of this discovery in revaluing the region’s heritage
The future of our territory is built by recognizing the value of our origins

This year the friars of the Basilica of Saint Anthony will again entrust themselves
to the Holy Father’s words in his traditional Message for the 2025 Lent:
We begin our annual pilgrimage of Lent in faith and hope with the penitential rite of the imposition of ashes
as we share in the grace of the Jubilee Year
I would like to propose a few reflections on what it means to journey together in hope
and on the summons to conversion that God in his mercy addresses to all of us

This arduous path from slavery to freedom was willed and guided by the Lord
who loves his people and remains ever faithful to them
It is hard to think of the biblical exodus without also thinking of those of our brothers and sisters who in our own day are fleeing situations of misery and violence in search of a better life for themselves and their loved ones
A first call to conversion thus comes from the realization that all of us are pilgrims in this life; each of us is invited to stop and ask how our lives reflect this fact
either immobilized by fear and hopelessness or reluctant to move out of my comfort zone
Christians are called to walk at the side of others
The Holy Spirit impels us not to remain self-absorbed
but to leave ourselves behind and keep walking towards God and our brothers and sisters
Journeying together means consolidating the unity grounded in our common dignity as children of God (cf

The Basilica of Saint Anthony in Padua will join in celebrating Sunday of the Word of God on 26 January
This initiative was spearheaded by Pope Francis in his effort to place the Holy Scriptures at the centre of life along with the Eucharist
The celebration in the Basilica at 11.00am will include a special ritual: the enthronement and the incensing of the Gospel
during the whole celebration in the presbytery

This commemoration provides a unique opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the common faith of Christians
as expressed in the Creed formulated during this Council; a faith that remains alive and fruitful in our days
The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2025 offers an invitation to draw on this shared heritage and to enter more deeply into the faith that unites all Christians
It is with this in mind that the guiding biblical text was chosen – John 11:17-27
takes its cue from the dialogue between Jesus and Martha when Jesus visited the home of Martha and Mary in Bethany following the death of their brother Lazarus
the prayers and reflections for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity were prepared by the brothers and sisters of the monastic community of Bose in northern Italy

Las Vegas Raiders coach Antonio Pierce was slapped with an eight-year show-cause order because of violations that occurred when he was an assistant coach at Arizona State
Most of the violations were related to what the NCAA referred to as a "scheme" orchestrated by Pierce to circumvent restrictions in place during the COVID-19 pandemic
Pierce facilitated impermissible recruiting contact with 35 prospects
football facility tours and entertainment." It was also determined he directed an assistant to engage in tampering with a player enrolled at another school and traveled out of state to observe and meet with prospects during a recruiting dead period
"In arriving at an eight-year show-cause order for Pierce
the panel emphasized his role as the ringleader in orchestrating the recruiting violations," according to the report from the NCAA
Raiders coach Antonio Pierce received an eight-year show-cause order for his role in recruiting violations when he served as associate head coach at Arizona State
The penalty would take effect if he returns to college coaching. Ian Maule/Getty Images"No comment," now-Raiders coach Antonio Pierce said when asked about the penalties
In the event Pierce is hired by an NCAA school during the show-cause order -- which runs until Oct
2032 -- he would be suspended for the first football season and would be allowed no contact with any of the program's coaches or players during that period
Pierce provided "false or misleading information" and was unwilling to provide his financial records
One ASU staff member told the NCAA that Pierce "did not fear the potential consequences for NCAA violations due to the financial security provided by his self-proclaimed wealth."
"Pierce used his position of authority to pressure staff members into engaging in violations
often by instilling fear that they would lose their jobs if they did not follow his orders," the report says
The NCAA also issued a five-year show-cause order for former ASU football analyst Anthony Garnett
Garnett would face a one-season suspension if hired during the next five years
In the 67-page report, there are several mentions of former booster Regina Jackson, the mother of former ASU and current Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels
who assisted with setting up impermissible campus visits and other violations
Daniels transferred from ASU to LSU after the 2021 season
won the Heisman Trophy in 2023 and was selected No
In April, the NCAA punished ASU with four years of probation
vacated games in which ineligible players competed

Catholics honor the memory of the Franciscan priest St
Although he is popularly invoked today by those who have trouble finding lost objects
he was known in his own day as the “Hammer of Heretics” due to the powerful witness of his life and preaching
The saint known to the Church as Anthony of Padua was not born in the Italian city of Padua
the son of an army officer named Martin and a virtuous woman named Mary
They had Ferdinand educated by a group of priests
and the young man made his own decision to enter religious life at age 15
Ferdinand initially lived in a monastery of the Augustinian order outside of Lisbon
But he disliked the distraction of constant visits from his friends
and moved to a more remote house of the same order
he concentrated on reading the Bible and the Church Fathers
while living a life of asceticism and heartfelt devotion to God
Ferdinand learned the news about five Franciscan friars who had recently died for their faith in Morocco
When their bodies were brought to Portugal for veneration
Ferdinand developed a passionate desire to imitate their commitment to the Gospel
When a group of Franciscans visited his monastery
Ferdinand told them he wanted to adopt their poor and humble way of life
Some of the Augustinian monks criticized and mocked Ferdinand's interest in the Franciscans
But prayer confirmed his desire to follow the example of St
He eventually obtained permission to leave the Augustinians and join a small Franciscan monastery in 1221
Anthony wanted to imitate the Franciscan martyrs who had died trying to convert the Muslims of Morocco
He traveled on a ship to Africa for this purpose
but became seriously ill and could not carry out his intention
The ship that was supposed to take him to Spain for treatment was blown off course
Francis was holding a major meeting for the members of his order
Anthony resolved to stay in Italy in order to be closer to St
He deliberately concealed his deep knowledge of theology and Scripture
and offered to serve in the kitchen among the brothers
no one realized that the future “Hammer of Heretics” was anything other than a kitchen assistant and obedient Franciscan priest
Anthony was forced to deliver an improvised speech before an assembly of Dominicans and Franciscans
Francis himself soon learned what kind of man the dishwashing priest really was
In 1224 he gave Anthony permission to teach theology in the Franciscan order – “provided
the spirit of prayer and devotion may not be extinguished.”
Anthony taught theology in several French and Italian cities
while strictly following his Franciscan vows and preaching regularly to the people
he dedicated himself entirely to the work of preaching as a missionary in France
teaching an authentic love for God to many people – whether peasants or princes – who had fallen away from Catholic faith and morality
Known for his bold preaching and austere lifestyle
Anthony also had a reputation as a worker of miracles
which often came about in the course of his disputes with heretics
and accepted food only after it had placed itself in adoration before the Eucharist that Anthony brought in his hands
which Anthony ate without any harm after making the sign of the Cross over it
who rose out of the sea to hear his preaching when heretical residents of a city refused to listen
Following the example of his patron – the earlier St
who had lived as a hermit – he retreated to a remote location
When his worsening health forced him to be carried back to the Franciscan monastery in Padua
crowds of people converged on the group in hopes of paying their homage to the holy priest
The commotion surrounding his transport forced his attendants to stop short of their destination
Anthony prayed the Church's seven traditional penitential psalms
combined with the many miracles he had worked during his lifetime
moved Pope Gregory IX – who knew the saint personally – to canonize him one year after his death
is honored on earth by many miracles daily seen at his tomb
of which we are certified by authentic writings,” proclaimed the 13th-century Pope

climate emergencies and expensive energy are putting a strain on the most disadvantaged countries
but they are also impoverishing at an unprecedented rate the weakest sections of Europe and our country

“Aspects that we will have to keep in mind in 2023 and in the years to come
to cultivate the sense of sharing and community that feeds the great Anthonian family.”
The realization of the projects was possible with the concrete help of the many devotees of St

St Anthony has always been a friend of the elderly

by listening once more to those two questions

A rule that makes us weary and indifferent
A model of growth that divides and robs us of a future

A kind of attraction to the security of familiar things
All the celebrations of Wednesday 14 February in the Basilica of St Anthony will include the rite of the imposition of the ashes (click here for the timetable). In particular, the 6:00pm Holy Mass, presided over by Fr. Andrea Massarin, Vicar of the Basilica, will be streamed live on this page

The Basilica of Saint Anthony’s church bells rang joyously on September 8 this year when the friars got word that their Shrine had a new Rector in the person of Father Antonio Ramina
The news had been broken by the Minister General of the Conventual Franciscan friars
Carlos Trovarelli and by the Pontifical Delegate
It was the Holy Father himself who had indicated the name of Fr
Ramina from a choice of two other candidates that had been put to him by the Minister General
Ramina made his solemn profession as a Conventual Franciscan on October 4
He has a degree in Modern Letters from the University of Padua
and also holds the title of Doctor of Theology
Ramina was the Rector of the Theological Seminary St
Anthony Doctor and then Guardian of the Community of St
He taught Spiritual Theology at the Theologiacl Faculty of the Triveneto and in the School of Spirituality at the Theological Institute St
He has also held the major role of Definitor within his Province
who has been nominated Guardian of St Francis Friary in Treviso
and will remain in charge until the 2025 Chapter
The Franciscan friars of the Basilica received the nomination with joy: “We thank the Holy Father
Ramina will continue with fervor the work of his predecessor
in collaboration with the Pontifical Delegate
in favor of the numerous pilgrims who daily flock to the Basilica.” Gratitude was also expressed to Fr
Oliviero Svanera for his work during these last five years
particularly for having been able to guide the Shrine and its friars during the hardest months of the pandemic
Despite the hardships experienced by all the friars of the Basilica because of Covid-19
and the bereavement of losing three fellow friars
Svanera was able to keep the fire of faith and devotion to St
Anthony alive with many new creative initiatives.”
“The place which is closest to my heart,” says the new Rector
but also because at the Saint’s Tomb you can feel the living spirit of all of the Saint’s devotees who entrust their prayers to him.”

The almond tree is the first plant to flower after winter
when nature is still fast asleep and spring has yet to produce her first delicate buds
Our Lenten path was accompanied by images of destruction
there have also been many signs of life and hope which
will allow us to celebrate Easter with hope: children born after the flight from Ukraine
the thousands of refugees welcomed into our homes
the courage of those who gave up their lives to protect their loved ones and freedoms
It is with these images in the heart that Father Giancarlo Zamengo
director general of the Messenger of Saint Anthony
on behalf of the friars of the Basilica and of all the collaborators of the great family of Saint Anthony
“Peace is the gift that the Risen Lord has come to bring us in our otherwise sad lives
Hardships must become a means for strengthening hope in us and to give us the strength to believe that the force of love will always prevail over selfishness and evil
Anthony to make us into builders of peace.”
