Sicily — Rescue teams and divers were returning to the site of a storm-sunken superyacht off Sicily on Tuesday to search for six people
who are believed to be still trapped in the hull
Divers were loading a rescue dinghy at the port of Porticello
after a first search Monday ended unsuccessfully
Fire rescue crews reported that divers were unable to access the below-deck cabins because they were blocked by debris that had shifted during the violent storm that toppled the luxury sailboat early Monday
including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her
due to the difficulty represented by the presence of furnishings obstructing the divers’ passage,” the fire crews said in a statement
The search was made particularly difficult because the ship was resting on the seabed at a depth of 50 meters
which limits the amount of time divers can be underwater
he told The Associated Press early Tuesday
The 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian luxury yacht had been moored about a half-mile off Ponticello when a storm rolled in around 4 a.m
Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water
Fifteen of the Bayesian’s 22 passengers and crew managed to escape
first onto a lifeboat and then by a nearby sailboat
that had also been moored offshore to ride out the storm
Among those missing was Lynch
who was once hailed as Britain’s king of technology
He was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges in a U.S
federal trial related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company
The vacation appeared to be something of a celebration after Lynch's acquittal
with guests including some of the people who had stood by Lynch throughout the ordeal
Also among the missing was Jonathan Bloomer
the former head of the Autonomy audit committee who testified at Lynch’s trial
Among the survivors was Charlotte Golunski
who said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water
but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety
built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi
it has been available for charter for 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week and is notable for its massive 75-meter tall aluminum mast

ROME, April 22 (Reuters) – The superyacht that sank off Sicily last year, killing British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and six others
will be lifted out of the water next month after its mast is dismantled
people close to the matter said on Tuesday
The recovery of the British-flagged Bayesian
lying on its right side at a depth of around 50 meters (164 feet)
could help explain why it went down during a sudden storm off the port of Porticello
near Palermo – an event that has baffled naval experts
The salvage operation will be managed by a joint venture of Dutch companies HEBO Maritiemservice and Smit Salvage
who declined to be named as they are not authorized to speak on the matter
Neither company was immediately available to comment
A ship carrying the mega crane HEBO Lift 10 has left the port of Rotterdam and is currently sailing off the French Atlantic coast
adding that it will take 10 to 12 days to reach Porticello
Twenty-two people were on board the Bayesian
The survivors included nine of the 10 crew members and Lynch’s wife
Lynch’s daughter was among those who died
Italian prosecutors and coastguards have selected a recovery project led by TMC Marine Consultants Ltd
which involves pulling the 72-meter mast out of the water before the rest of the vessel in order to safeguard the hull and evidence it may contain
which involved turning the 55.9-meter yacht
almost 90 degrees on the seabed without dismantling its mast
were rejected because of the complexity of the procedure
Prosecutors in the town of Termini Imerese, near Palermo, have placed three crew members under investigation: Captain James Cutfield
ship engineer Tim Parker Eaton and night watch duty sailor Matthew Griffiths
They are suspected of manslaughter and causing a shipwreck
The prosecutors have said the Bayesian will have to be pulled out of the water before the investigation can be concluded.

PORTICELLO, Sicily (AP) — British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people were missing after their luxury superyacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday
Italy’s civil protection and authorities said
Lynch, who was acquitted in June in a big U.S
was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello
A tornado over the water known as a waterspout had struck the area overnight
said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency
and police divers spent the day trying to reach the hull of the ship
which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello where it had been anchored
to see if it would be possible to search through the night
when weather conditions were expected to worsen
The ship had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers
A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight
and a waterspout struck precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored
“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina
wasn’t as badly damaged and helped rescue the 15 survivors — including Lynch’s wife
The Bayesian was notable for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast — one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night
Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week
said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water
the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell
said he had noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realized the ship had simply disappeared
ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported
Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people
who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard
Eight of those rescued were hospitalized while the others were taken to a hotel
One body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck
but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull
involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard
Fisherman Fabio Cefalù said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m
and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there
wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water

He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on-site for three hours
He said he had been up early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing
and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht

The search has resumed off the coast of Sicily for missing British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter
who are among six people feared dead following the sinking of his superyacht
The British-flagged luxury yacht, named Bayesian
capsized at about 5am local time off the coast of Palermo on Monday after being hit by a tornado
It's since been revealed the trip was intended to be a 'victory' celebration
after Mr Lynch was acquitted of fraud charges in the US
Four of the missing passengers are British
Italian news website la Repubblica confirmed
Sicily's civil protection agency confirmed that Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter

It comes just days after Lynch's co-defendant in the tech mogul's US fraud trial, Stephen Chamberlain, was “fatally struck” by car
rescue divers' efforts to get inside the sunken superyacht
which is resting on the sea bed 50m below the surface
have been hampered by 'obstructions inside the vessel' according to authorities
Emergency services have said the dives that have so-far been attempted were "unsuccessful"
"The first inspection [by] cave divers inside the wreck was unsuccessful," he said to waiting media
with difficulties due to the presence of furniture that obstructs the passage," he added in a translated statement
believed to be that of the vessel's cook
has been found and police divers are trying to reach the hull of the ship

It comes as local fishermen joined the search effort on Monday
"There were two sailboats half a mile away from the harbour with their anchors at sea," Fabio Cefalu told Italian media
"After 10 minutes we saw a flare in the sky
we waited about 10 minutes to see the intensity of the tornado and we went out to sea
"We were first to give rescue but we found no one at sea
we only found cushions and the remains of the boat."
Coast guards on patrol boats and firefighters attempted to rescue survivors, including a one-year-old baby
who “held her afloat" to stop her from drowning
The child's mother said her daughter is now being treated in the Di Cristina hospital in Palermo
The trip aboard the boat was said to be a "celebration"
with Lynch reportedly hailing he had "got his life back" following his aquital

If you've lived in Milwaukee for any length of time
you've heard them all: Balistreri and D'Amato
Over the years they've run your favorite restaurants
no Machi Produce and no Alioto's Restaurant
Balistrieri - organized crime in Milwaukee would have been far less organized
All of these local notables have one thing in common
Every one of these families traces its roots to a small strip of villages on the Mediterranean seacoast east of Palermo
The greatest number came from Porticello and Sant'Elia
a pair of interlocking hamlets whose borders have long since been invisible to anyone but locals
Together they cover perhaps two square miles - an area smaller than Milwaukee's Bay View neighborhood
Santa Flavia and Bagheria sent hundreds more immigrants
Villages elsewhere in Sicily added to the flow - most Milwaukee Italians are Sicilians
If there's a comparable cluster of influential Milwaukeeans from such a small geographic area anywhere in the world
and I had a chance to trace Milwaukee's Sicilian connection during a fall trip to Italy
Friends had told us that Porticello was a fishing village
but I'd never seen a fishing village quite like this one
but Porticello's roughly 10,000 residents are packed into three- and four-story stuccoed apartment blocks that form continuous walls along streets narrower than the average Milwaukee alley
The residential ramparts are broken by small shops and small restaurants
but we were more struck by the number of mobile vendors who sold produce
the church is the physical heart of Porticello
and the street system surrounding it seems improvised to the point of randomness
The whole assemblage cascades down to the sea - and a view as vast and open as the village itself is dense
We arrived in the wake of the Feast of Madonna del Lume
an extravaganza that swelled Porticello's population to an estimated 60,000 for an entire week
The town was experiencing a collective hangover
and the waterfront was strewn with the remains of fireworks
strolling in knots of two or three and stopping to play cards
I stopped a random stranger crossing Porticello's portside piazza and asked whether he knew anyone in Milwaukee
especially since few people in the village
"I know Milwaukee." His name was Santo Balistreri and
Santo worked in the Ampco Metal plant and shared a home with his parents
the immigrant had returned in middle age to a life of relative comfort in his Sicilian hometown
His parents died in Milwaukee and are buried here - "on Burleigh Street," Santo recalled
"My cousins are coming down." In a few minutes we found ourselves in conversation with a pair of Milwaukeeans: Peter and Sal Carini
brothers who own La Conca D'Oro restaurant on Oakland Ave
they were visiting a brother who still lives there - a trip they make every couple of years
following in the footsteps of a grandfather who came to Milwaukee in the 1930s and found work as a railroad fireman
"They didn't want to fish any more," Peter said
"They wanted a better life for their kids."
The more Sonja and I looked in the next day or two
The local cemetery was filled with names most Milwaukeeans would recognize
and one of the old-timers I photographed on a park bench near the church turned out to be a cousin of Shorewood barber Joe D'Acquisto's
I began to wonder if everyone in Porticello and Sant' Elia was related to someone in Milwaukee
Mass emigration from Sicily began in the 1890s
a time of economic distress in the Old World and industrial prosperity in the New
Milwaukee was already a manufacturing powerhouse
and an abundance of entry-level jobs made the city a magnet for immigrants
and Ampco Metal were among the employers that developed a strong preference for Sicilian workers
All it took was for a few forgotten Porticellans or Sant'Elians to find jobs and write home
One crossed and others followed - a pattern known as chain migration
But developments in transportation were every bit as important
a surplus of steamships and the rise of cutthroat competition had made ocean travel faster
Fares were so low that the grand ocean liners were practically trans-Atlantic shuttles
carrying workers back and forth in response to the vagaries of supply and demand
and one that applied particularly to Sicilian males
They lived in America during the warm months
Winter was also the customary season for young men to find brides
Europeans who had crossed in earlier decades
but the Sicilians took two-way travel for granted
The result was a pair of mutually reinforcing waves
Chain migration ensured a steady flow of immigrants to Milwaukee
and return migration ensured a permanent connection with Sicily
The ties between Milwaukee and the Porticello region remained strong
most tightly focused examples of both migration patterns in Milwaukee's history
Trans-Atlantic travel now requires hours by air rather than days by sea
re-created that density in Milwaukee's Third Ward
but their descendants live all over the metropolitan area
Porticello and Sant'Elia have changed as well
The conjoined villages have been nearly engulfed by the unlovely sprawl that Palermo has become
and the empty spots on the coastline are rapidly filling in with the expensive homes of city-dwellers seeking escape
and Milwaukee's Porticellans are as close as the nearest D'Amato
a tiny section of the Sicilian seacoast has sent a disproportionate number of its sons and daughters to Milwaukee
