Sarnico Arcidiavolo GT - the seakeeping of a monohull
What they say “The Arcidiavolo GT concept boat from Cantieri di Sarnico will become a production boat and a raceboat.”
Designed by powerboating legend Sonny Levi
the hull is said to combine the seakeeping of a monohull
Twin Yanmar turbo diesels on the leisure version give a claimed top speed of 59 knots with optional go-faster metallic paint and custom graphics to make sure everyone notices
Sarnico say the craft can be “enriched and refined” with accessories like leather upholstery

An electric engine from the 70s and a steam engine from 1932 to push: this is how the Sebino Express
one of the 400 historic trains recovered by the Ferrovie dello Stato Foundation which today made its journey with a load of tourists and emotions towards Paratico Sarnico
via Palazzolo sull'Oglio: twelve kilometers at the foot of the Camonica valley
among the vineyards of Franciacorta in a journey that was the praise of slowness and the rediscovery of a way of traveling from other times
The "hundred doors" carriage with wooden seats in second class
green velvets in first class and studded carriages and then her
the steam locomotive that swallows a quintal of coal into its boiler every five kilometres
A clean coal - explains the director general of the Fondazione Ferrovie Luigi Cantamessa - washed and which does not release fine dust
“This line – explains Cantamessa – was opened in 1876 and hasn't seen regular travelers since 1967
when the last railcar Paratico Sarnico Bergamo closed the era of this marginal section
The section has been saved and is one of those to be exploited together with the lakes
tickets are always sold out immediately after they have just been put on sale"
on the Palazzolo sull'Oglio - Paratico Sarnico first in Italy
panoramic carriages that end at the window line with wooden benches
"The first two specimens have already been manufactured in the Rimini major repair workshops
they will go back and forth at 30 kilometers per hour
making you enjoy the 12 kilometers of the Palazzolo Paratico Sarnico"
"Without the Lombardy Region - he underlined - we would not be able to support it economically"
which has been rediscovered and pleases: Every year
300 travelers travel along the old railways
tourists of all ages: the elderly who remember the journeys of many years ago and young people who want to rediscover the charm of another way of moving
with the smell of coal that creeps into the carriage and the history that pervades the carriages
used during the Second World War also to transport the wounded
also the regional councilors Franco Lucente
councilor for transport and sustainable mobility
Claudia Maria Terzi (Infrastructure and public works) and Barbara Mazzali (tourism
"An important support - explains councilor Lucente - which will not be lacking in the next few years so that this mix between tourism and local public transport continues to work to give users the opportunity to get to know the beauties of Lombardy"
"The importance of this project - he continued - is the growth it has had over the years: 2019 was a good year with 21 races
today we have 38 percent more than the previous year and this means that it is a project that deserves to be supported”
“The tourist who comes to Lombardy – underlined Mazzali – seeks sensory emotions and this solution gives the possibility of accompanying the tourist to less famous but no less beautiful places
We need to use Milan as a driving force for all the other provinces that have the real added value of great excellence with the famous Lombard style that tourists are looking for today
a further project that can be combined with major events is also welcome because these means of transport are appreciated above all by foreign tourists who are arriving: Americans and Chinese"
"The historic train is an emotional journey that makes you rediscover the spaces of the territories that have also changed by the arrival of the historic trains: over the years we have seen the territories where the trains pass evolve because they carry a load of passengers who want to discover the area
with the trips made in connection with the navigation service
At the beginning the trips were sporadic - concluded the councilor - but from 2018 it was decided to make them structural and year after year the interest has grown"

The first new model from Sarnico since the passing of Carlo Riva is strongly influenced by the great Italian designer’s legacy
writes Boat International Media CEO Chris Downham_..._
It's not often that I get out of the office to go to the launch of a new model; there are people better qualified than me to look at new boats
and often other commitments make it a bit tricky
and so when the invite came in to go to the premier of the new Rivale 56
and I had a couple of days window there were no good reasons not to go and lots of positive ones to schedule in the trip
the opportunity to make my first pilgrimage to the Riva facility and its spiritual home in Sarnico was not one to be missed
Riva’s base is about 90 minutes drive west of Milan on the shores of Lake Iseo
but a world away from the hustle and bustle of Italy's finance and fashion heartland
It is a picturesque holiday town but with a manufacturing base; Riva has been building boats around here for 175 years
and the facility is part working production line
part sales room and all historic epicentre for the Riva brand
The launch formed one element of a night that can only be described as a full on party
In true Italian style it was done with a combination of showmanship and passion
Ferretti Group doesn't seem capable of doing things by halves
bringing in Massimo Bottura from the three Michelin star Osteria Francescana in Modena to provide the catering
a top quality DJ to spin tunes into the small hours
and rolling in the launch of an Abarth Fiat 500 695 Rivale limited edition (with a claimed top speed of 140mph) as part of the programme
And that’s not to mention Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi taking to the stage later in the evening to perform a very competent rendition of The Eagles’ Hotel California
Following that segment I found myself reviewing my own parameters for what the role of a CEO is
was undoubtedly the arrival of the new 17 metre Riva motor yacht
revealing its name as Rivale 56 — a moniker inherited from earlier model
The boat appeared from behind a large floating mirrored box (complete with eight avant grade dancers)
which divided in two for the boat to emerge through
just as the musical medley culminated in the Duran Duran classic A View To A Kill
If you are going to launch a quintessentially Italian boat in an Italian shipyard
and a few hundred of your closest friends partying until the early hours
as we arrived sore-headed the following morning for a first look on board the Rivale 56 itself
The overall impression is of a pocket superyacht
With a full-beam master and a generous guest cabin
plus a day head and a further space for either crew accommodation or bunks — it's pretty extensive for a 17 metre
soft furnishings were provided by Ivano Redaelli and Van Besouw
including tartan blankets and wall-to-wall carpets
Specification and headroom are high throughout
with everything from high-gloss mahogany panelling in the galley through to the on-deck barbecue providing a sense of generosity and luxury living
Everything is of course much more compact than on a larger boat
but it feels well thought out and with a clear vision of how the boat will be used
for weekends exploring Italian coastal waters
The Riva brand heritage shines through, as the Rivale 56 is full of reminders of its distinguished antecedents. Take the stainless steel horn on the foredeck for example — styled specifically for this boat and but inspired by the same feature on 1960s Riva models.
The Ferretti Group team is confident in the Rivale 56, and expects to be able to deliver around eight to ten per year. With prices starting at €1,800,000, it seems an attractive proposition, and one that fits in with the Riva legacy. I imagine Carlo would be proud.

the man behind some of the world's most iconic boat designs
Legendary yachting entrepreneur Carlo Riva
Riva was born in Sarnico in 1922 where he still resided before his death
and at a young age he joined the Riva family business
which was founded by his great-grandfather Pietro in 1842
In 1954 he opened the new Riva futuristic shipyard which he organised based on a modern and innovative production structure
It was during this time that Mr Riva transformed how boats were seen
not simply as a method of transport for goods and people
but he saw craft as an object of pleasure and luxury
The Master shipbuilder transformed the Riva brand into a veritable status symbol with models such as Tritone
He said of the latter: “It was designed with love and is strong and pure like a thoroughbred horse
Riva’s boats became very popular with celebrities and royalty alike
Brigitte Bardot and Paul Belmondo were just some of the famous fans of the craft
all wanting a slice of the Italian dolce vita.Mr Carlo Riva always showed his forward thinking and innovative streak and in 1969 he created the first fibreglass boat
The entrepreneur decided to leave the shipyard in 1972 to concentrate on working on the International Tourist Port of Rapallo
in the northern Italian coastal region Liguria
The port was dedicated to him in 1975 and it still bears Riva’s name
In 2005 he was conferred the title of Personnalité de la Mer Prince Albert II of Monaco
said in a press release: “Carlo Riva has left us
The world has lost a brilliant creator of boats
a giant in Italy’s industrial and business history
“To me this is a personal loss of a master
His vision and inexhaustible energy make him the leading personality in the 20th century yachting world
a man whose extraordinary creations have already become legends
“Carlo Riva’s boats will always be the finest in the world
A source of inspiration to all of us who feel a strong sense of responsibility for the stewardship of and for taking forward into the future the leading brand in the world of yachting.”
carlo riva, pioneering engineer of luxury boat manufacturer riva yacht
the history of riva began in 1842 with its founder pietro riva
a carpenter who moved to the italian town of sarnico
the company’s reins were eventually passed on to ernesto and serafino riva
before finally ending up in the hands of pietro’s great-grandson carlo riva in the 1950s
carlo — originally an engineer — was driven by an endless passion for boats and the family business since he was a child
through his powerful vision for the company
carlo became responsible for creating the well-known ‘riva-style’ boat — a distinctive aesthetic that has become synonymous around the world with elegance and impeccable taste.

throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the riva boatyard became internationally successful with motorboats produced by carlo riva. carlo created a series of wooden yachts characterized by unmistakable design features
one of which was the ‘ariston’
of which he says was ‘designed with love
born pure and strong like a pedigree horse
models like the ‘tritone’ (the first two-engine yacht), the ‘sebino’ (which marked the beginning of series production)
all characterized by a meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship expertise
the vessels’ distinctive design qualities made many of riva’s creations the object of desire for movie stars and aristocracy.
carlo was also responsible for designing the company’s boatyard
his vision for the building was meant to mimic the feeling of being in a boat and looking out of the observation deck

AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function
but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style
There are no gates at the entrance to the forecourt of the Riva shipyard in Sarnico
Almost as if to hint at the link between the local area and one of its centres of excellence
which was set up on the Bergamo side of Lake Iseo in 1954
That year marked a turning point in its boat-making activities
a business that began 180 years ago this year
Which is not the only anniversary now being celebrated: 2022 is the centenary of the birth of Carlo Riva
the brilliant entrepreneur who exactly 60 years ago created a nautical legend: Aquarama
the speedboat that is the very epitome of Italian style
a marvel of inventiveness and craftsmanship
And we have all seen at least one of them at the cinema
with the arrival of CEO Alberto Galassi in 2014 Riva enjoyed a second youth
while staying true to the values that made it such a success in the first place: quality
“It’s a brand that belongs to everyone,” says Alberto Galassi
who has loved the brand since he was boy (“If it didn’t exist I wouldn’t be here,” he adds)
“It was a symbol of Italy’s rebirth after the war
it stirs the emotions of the same kind of influential people
from actresses to Formula One drivers.” It might seem something of a cliché to compare a Riva to a Ferrari
and yet its iconic logo is printed on the helmets and cars of Ferrari teammates Leclerc and Sainz (who of course both own one)
The affinity between the two Italian gems has been further emphasised by the fact that the Product Strategy Committee is led by Piero Ferrari
That is a valuable support for designer Mauro Micheli
who together with Sergio Beretta founded Officina Italiana Design
the studio that is the exclusive designer of the entire fleet
In 2004 the historic boatyard was joined by a second one in La Spezia where yachts with lengths of more than 20 metres are made
Ten years later Riva Superyacht Division opened in Ancona that makes vessels in steel
Carlo’s spirit and tastes live on in the Sarnico boatyard
“On the occasion of this triple celebration

and six of the other 16 have already been sold

Riva's original shipyard at Sarnico on Lake Iseo
The home of Riva Yacht’s superyacht division on the shores of the Ligurian Sea has been transformed by Studio Manfroni e Associati di La Spezia
The remodelling and expansion of Riva Yacht’s headquarters and shipyard in La Spezia has just been completed to a design by Studio Manfroni e Associati di La Spezia (MMAA)
The historic boatbuilder – which had its origins in the sleek motorboats designs of Carlo Riva – is now part of the Ferretti Group
with a range that runs from the iconic Aquariva series through to bespoke Superyachts in the 50m + category
The company divides its production between two key sites
just outside Bergamo on the shores of Lake Iseo
This facility originally opened in 1842 by Carlo Riva’s great grandfather
and was the nexus of wooden-hulled motorboat production from the 1950s onwards
This is Riva Yachts’ other production facility in La Spezia
originally opened in 2004 to cater for the far larger boats built under the Riva name after the Ferretti acquisition in 2000
adding it to a portfolio that includes Mochi Craft
MMAA have expanded their original design for the site with two new large structures facing the sea
as well as a new winter garden overlooking the sea
The two new buildings are connected by a bridge across the docks
The site itself runs to over 32,000 square metres and required extensive work to re-shape the coast to accommodate the docks and a special lift basin
This stretch of the Ligurian Riveria is home to many shipyards
including Sanlorenzo Yachts and the Italian Sea Group
All the workspaces have a direct view onto the water
with the two covered docks allowing boats to be serviced throughout the year
One is given over to the final stages of production
deep blues and aquamarines are prominently deployed
Mario Manfroni established his studio in 1986
The firm has extensive maritime experience
building marinas as well as shipyards and other industrial projects
Riva Yachts’ most recent launches were the Riva 88’ Folgore and Riva 110’ Dolcevita
the latter a substantial superyacht with five guest cabins
a far cry from the compact Aquaramas of the 1960s

The Gianni Bellini Art Gallery in Sarnico (Bergamo) hosts from May 19 to September 3
Masterpieces from the Johannesburg Art Gallery
curated by Simona Bartolena and Massimo Rossi
in collaboration with Associazione Il Ponte di Sarnico
under the patronage of the Municipality of Sarnico
the exhibition aims to remember Nelson Mandela
on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of his death.Sixty works
from the prestigious South African art gallery
which opened to the public in 1910 and boasts a heritage of great artistic value
Its collection includes artists such as Courbet
spanning more than a century of international art history
from the mid-nineteenth century to the latter twentieth century
The narrative ideally begins with the English nineteenth century and two works by William Turner and continues with Alma-Tadema’s painting
a refined and melancholy scene set in a dark and imaginative Egypt
and with the works of two of the major exponents of the Pre-Raphaelites
John Everett Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti whose masterpiece
with whom the painter lived an ’intense yet ill-fated love affair
which ended with the woman’s probable suicide
The exhibition continues with a large section devoted to the achievements of late 19th-century painting and opens with those painters who chose a new approach to the real in painting
Gustave Courbet with a foreshortening of the Norman cliffs of Étretat
introduced by authors such as Eugéne Boudin and Johan Barthold Jongkind
is represented by Edgar Degas(Two Ballerinas)
The exhibition tour continues with some protagonists of the post-Impressionist scene: Paul Cézanne(The Bathers)
Crossing the threshold of the twentieth century
one encounters the works of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso
which open to the new instances of contemporary art
There is no shortage of exponents of the second half of the century: the British Francis Bacon and Henry Moore
and the two protagonists of American pop art Robert Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol
whose triptych dedicated to Joseph Beuys is presented
Ideally closing the exhibition is the section that investigates art developed in South Africa in the 20th century
it is possible here to admire the works of Maggie Laubser
one of the exponents of South African expressionism
painters with strong interests in the social sphere who recount the country’s traditions
but also urban life and the reality of Apartheid
The exhibition gives the public an opportunity to discover the fascinating history of the Johannesburg Art Gallery
Principal player in the birth and formation of the museum collection was Lady Florence Phillips
wife of mining magnate Sir Lionel Phillips
A woman of great charm (as evidenced by her portrait
convinced that her city should have an art museum
she persuaded her husband and a number of industrial magnates to invest in the project
Lady Phillips sold a blue diamond given to her by her husband to purchase the early work
another great personality of the Anglo-Saxon cultural scene
the museum has presented a selection of works of extraordinary quality and modernity
a nucleus that has been enriched over the years by new acquisitions and donations

preserving and displaying scientific artifacts to the public and raising awareness of the local natural and historical heritage
The museum is divided into several sections all extremely rich in exhibits
There is first of all the ornithological one
Today the museum itinerary unfolds in the rooms on the building’s main floor
The first part contains numerous works acquired by the count during numerous trips to Italy in the second half of the 18th century
contains a collection of paintings from various Italian schools
which grew out of the donation of Giovanni Battista Zitti’s collection of Garibaldian memorabilia
Inside the splendid 15th-century palazzo Gervasoni is the Museo Civico d’Arte e del Territorio
The palace was formerly a convent as can still be seen from the presence of the cloister and gallery
today it houses a large picture gallery divided on three floors and the result of an important donation by Don Gianni Bellini
A total of about 150 works are preserved in Sarnico
mostly period paintings dating from the 16th to the 18th century
Period furniture and ancient marble and wooden statues are also part of the collection

Classified as a wetland of international importance, theTorbiere del Sabino nature reserve is one of the cradles of life in the entire Po Valley
Here there is a wide variety of habitats that are home to numerous aquatic marsh species now threatened with extinction not only in Lombardy
There are numerous trails that wind through the territory of the reserve and allow close observation of plants and animals in a wild and unspoiled habitat
among them the most striking is probably the central one that winds through wooden footbridges that connect the different tongues of land right in the heart of this territory
In Provaglio d’Iseo, above a rocky rise is the Monastery of San Pietro in Lamosa
a very ancient building overlooking the peat bogs
The monastery is believed to have been built where ancient pagan and early Christian temples stood in antiquity; instead
traces of the construction of an early church date back to the 11th century
which was later donated to the monks of the Abbey of Cluny and then became the center of the economic and religious life of the area
The Cluniac monks remained there until the 15th century
and traces of their passage are still clearly visible even though today the church has distinctly 15th- and 16th-century features
Numerous works of fine workmanship are preserved inside
including a fine cycle of frescoes of theHistoria salutis dating from the 15th-16th centuries
which is located in the adjoining oratory of Santa Maria Maddalena
Also worth seeing in Iseo is the church of San Silvestro: this marvelous Romanesque church is believed to have been the private oratory of the bishop of Brescia when he stayed at length on Lake Iseo in the summer
the church of San Silvestro consists of a single hall divided into two floors
the property of the confraternity of the Disciplini
is evidenced by the frescoes depicting some members of the order
Particularly striking is the recently restored fresco of the Dance Macabre in which a number of characters are still recognizable
a king and a merchant with his own purse of denarii
the village of Lovere is one of its most charming and historic corners
getting lost among the mountain peaks and clear waters is an experience to be absolutely tried as well as stopping to discover the many treasures guarded by this jewel of a town
Starting from the splendid Piazza del Porto with its majestic buildings that frame it

to house and assist those who were passing through this pass
Many throughout the centuries have stayed within these imposing walls and found refreshment there
and the wide world of yachting are grieving the loss of a maestro of boat design
a master of Italian style and unrivalled elegance
Carlo Riva was indeed an extraordinary man who turned his family name into a legend and made Riva a synonym of pleasure boating
who passed away in his hometown of Sarnico this week
His eponymous boat brand and parent company
LA DOLCE VITAJust four letters epitomise the history
the technology and the appeal of Italian-made yachts
The history of a family and of an extraordinary man
the legend of a whole era that saw the launching of Italian design onto the world stage from the days of “La Dolce Vita” through to the present day
which has always been the hallmark of the boats
crafted in the Riva boatyards: from the timeless charm of traditional wood to state-of-the-art fibreglass and steel
built and inspired by the genius and style of a unique man who has become a legend
a giant in Italy's industrial and business history," said Alberto Galassi
the Ferretti Group's Chief Executive Officer
"Carlo Riva taught us all the meaning of vision
His vision and inexhaustible innovative energy make him the leading personality in the 20th century yachting world
“Carlo Riva’s boats will always be the finest in the world
a source of inspiration to all of us who feel a strong sense of responsibility for the stewardship of and for taking forward into the future the leading brand in world yachting."
THE BIRTH OF PLEASURE BOATINGCarlo was not just one of the most internationally esteemed and renowned entrepreneurs in the pleasure craft industry
His innovations and creations have left an indelible mark in the history of lifestyle and design
making Riva the most famous boatyard of all times and a symbol of Italy's productiveness and creative genius
when the first speedboats were being built
Carlo was driven from a very early age by a boundless passion for boats and for working in boatyards
He joined the family business when still very young
following in the footsteps of his father Serafino
his grandfather Ernesto and his great-grandfather Pietro
futuristic shipyard — which is still protected by the Italian Superintendence for Artistic and Architectural Heritage — and organised it based on an innovative production structure
During that same period he transformed the very idea of the boat
turning it from a transport vehicle for goods and passengers or a racing powerboat to an object of pleasure and luxury
and creating a unique product in terms of aesthetic and functional qualities
RIVA’S GOLDEN AGECarlo is the creator of Riva's golden age
the Master shipbuilder who transformed the brand and its boats into a status symbol
These boats became the objects of desire for aristocrats
there were princes and sheiks from every corner of the world
during Italy’s industrial reconstruction and ‘economic miracle’ driven by a fascination for speed and racing cars
Carlo grasped the spirit of the age and created boats in wood with an unmistakable design
These nautical masterpieces immediately distinguished themselves for the fine materials
meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship with which they were created
about which Carlo said: "It was designed with love and is strong and pure like a thoroughbred horse
whose name is a tribute to the United States and to the magic of that state
The yachts created under Carlo's direction have all been inspired by an idea
launching a new fashion which is always the result of a research in design and construction which always makes all the difference
Riva became the foremost and iconic boatyard in the yachting world
Some 21 of these boats were sold during the first year of production
and a year later the Super version was brought out
The Aquarama remained in production until the 90s
is still housed in the museum of the Boatyard in Sarnico
Carlo showed entrepreneurial foresight yet again in 1969
demonstrating his great capacity for innovation while at the same time preserving traditional values
RIVA BOAT SERVICEHis unique and inexhaustible entrepreneurial spirit comes through not just from the boats he made but also from his ability to predict needs and opportunities
Anticipating the needs of yacht owners he in fact designed the Riva Boat Service
the focus of his interests shifted to the International Tourist Port of Rapallo
which was dedicated to him on 25 July 1975 and bears his name since that day
his "best-loved home" on the French Riviera
Carlo was conferred the title of Personnalité de la Mer by Prince Albert II of Monaco
Carlo has always been there to give advice
help and support to the Riva Boatyards: it is with great emotion that we remember his presence last spring at the launch of Rivamare
the latest masterpiece from the Sarnico boatyards
Carlo Riva died peacefully in his hometown of Sarnico on April 10
as he himself used to say: "With a touch of nostalgia in reliving the long ride of my wonderful life as a boatman."

When Chinese industrial conglomerate Weichai Group snapped up cash-strapped Italian luxury yacht builder Ferretti in 2012
the deal looked like a match made in heaven
known for the elegant Riva speedboats favoured by film star Sophia Loren
was the world’s top maker of large motor yachts and cash-rich Weichai saw an opportunity to offer luxury leisure to the growing ranks of Chinese billionaires
wealthy Chinese are yet to fully embrace the appeal of messing about in boats and Ferretti
which has since slipped to No.3 among global superyacht builders according to an annual order book survey by industry publisher Boat International
the market is not that fast,” said Fabiomassimo Discoli
a Hong Kong-based sales manager for Ferretti
adding that the company had found it needed to adapt its boats to the different tastes of Asian owners
“They don’t sleep on board and just use the boats for entertainment purposes,” said Discoli
speaking at the Singapore Yacht Show aboard a 21-metre Ferretti Yachts 690 that carried a €3 million price tag
The example of Ferretti underscores the difficulties Chinese buyers face in extracting quick returns from a global brand at a time when they are gobbling up Western assets as never before

Chinese buyers poured $18.8 billion into European assets in 2014
and topped that figure in the first half of 2015 alone
The Chinese bought an industrial plan that after two years did not produce results
But financial muscle alone is not enough to master a brand
and question marks hang over the ability of many Chinese buyers to leverage exports into their home market in times of slow growth
appointed by Weichai in May last year to try to revive the Italian group’s fortunes
expects the company to return to net profit in 2017
Weichai’s original Ferretti management team had envisaged the firm breaking even by the end of 2013
“The Chinese bought an industrial plan that after two years did not produce results,” Galassi said in an interview at the firm’s historic Riva shipyard in Sarnico
on the shores of Lake Iseo in northern Italy
“They value their investment but they also want returns.”
China has more than one million millionaires and 67,000 super-rich with 100 million yuan ($16 million) or more
But the number of luxury yachts sold is still low
Only around 0.3 per cent of Chinese with financial assets of at least $1 million own a yacht
according to a 2011 study by the Italian Trade Commission
sleek motor yachts conjure images of lazy family holidays along the sun-kissed Mediterranean coast
China’s coastline lacks the appeal of southern Europe or Thailand and a boat is seen more as a business asset than a family plaything
Taking out a client on a yachting trip has also become less socially acceptable since Chinese President Xi Jinping ramped up a crackdown on corporate corruption
leaving many fearful of becoming a target of official scrutiny
