The acquisition of Sagamore Spirit last year proved that Illva Saronno is working hard to become a recognized player in the global whiskey industry
Italian multinational drinks company Illva Saronno known worldwide for its iconic Disaronno Originale and Tia Maria
says reinforcement of these brands is central to its strategic plan
Both the heritage and presence of the two are continuously enhanced through sustained investment in global travel retail
The company’s long-term vision is to celebrate life
in style by developing and nurturing premium brands across key spirits categories
while promoting a culture of responsible drinking
Global travel retail is a core channel as it provides a crucial touchpoint for this vision
as well as tap into the premium American whiskey segment
alongside the development of The Busker Irish Whiskey highlights its ambitions for the future
Within the whisky category in travel retail
the company has a strong presence in Europe with The Busker Irish Whiskey
It has also been intensifying its efforts in the Americas
thanks to its premium product portfolio: The Busker’s Single Collection or Small Batch
Sagamore’s Cask Series and Engine Gin's innovative liquid and design
An inside look at the Sagamore Spirit Distillery in Maryland
Speaking about evolving preferences and trends
The spirits category is currently experiencing the rebirth of rye whiskey
Whiskey drinkers and mixologists are increasingly seeking and exploring other subcategories of American whiskey with a resurgence of rye whiskey
This is perfect timing considering the Sagamore premium product portfolio
Sagamore Spirit is dedicated to reviving the whiskey-making legacy in Maryland
The legacy of Maryland rye whiskey is a storied one that is deeply intertwined with the history of American distilling
To meet the growing demand for premium whiskies
Illva Saronno has created limited editions such as travel retail exclusive The Busker Single Cask Pot Still
in addition to super premium SKUs for Sagamore Spirits
By promoting these brands and ensuring their visibility in key travel retail markets
the company emphasizes an exceptional customer experience at the point of sale and ensures travelers encounter brands in an engaging and memorable manner
This strategy not only solidifies brand loyalty
as well as positions Illva Saronno as a formidable player in the segment
By winning both games of the Varese derby series on Saturday against Rheavendors Caronno
Inox Team Saronno achieved its second consecutive sweep
following the one on the field of Old Parma
it has a clean run (three wins out of three) in the games dedicated to AFI pitchers
where it has always presented Christina Toniolo as a starter
thanks to which she is one step away from reaching the 4 (in 7 games as a starter) of her 2024 in Saronno
but this was crucial for how it came about"
we were good because it could not have been so easy after the immediate disadvantage
runner-up last year and winner of the Coppa Italia
Toniolo's presence is particularly important: "The goal is always to compete until the end
and there is the possibility of improving and improving oneself
can allow everyone to take a step forward; their help is an opportunity for everyone."
Toniolo has had a lifelong love affair with softball: “I grew up in a family that always loved sports
My parents allowed me to try many different sports at a young age
and softball is the one I fell in love with at an early age
It’s been a part of my life for as long as I can remember
and I’m so grateful to be still able to play it today.” Since then
he already has a European gold medal behind him that the National team
will try to defend in September in Prague: “The team is enthusiastic about the contacts we have had in these first months with the new head coach
but we are only at the beginning of this adventure
We must not carry on our shoulders what others think
Our focus must be more than anything on the opportunity we have to wear the Italian uniform in such a prestigious tournament and to play as a team

faith and pop culture: this is what Cenacoli proposes
the exhibition organized by the City of Saronno and the Flangini Association on the occasion of Jubilee 2025
curated by art critic and historian Antonio d’Avossa
will be on view from April 13 to May 25 and will trace the theme of The Last Supper through works from different eras and languages
The choice of The Last Supper as the centerpiece of the exhibition stems from its universal symbolic value
It is one of the most powerful images in the Christian tradition
but also one of the most reinterpreted in the history of art
The aim of the exhibition is therefore to tell how this iconography has been reworked over time until it has become an element of pop language. The exhibition path brings into dialogue eighteenth- and nineteenth-century engravings
masterpieces of modern and contemporary art
in a narrative that ranges from the Christian tradition to conceptual art and the language of advertising
Among the exhibition’s protagonists are the likes of Joseph Beuys
such as the 16th-century wooden Last Supper housed in the Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Miracles and engravings from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts
The Last Supper is an icon that spans centuries and cultures
and it was precisely this transversality that inspired the exhibition concept
recalls the concepts of reconciliation and spiritual renewal
but it also opens to a reflection on the role of the sacred image in contemporary art
The exhibition takes place in several venues
with works exploring the theme of The Last Supper in new and surprising forms
The journey begins at the Spazio Art Café
where eighteenth- and nineteenth-century engravings granted by the Brera Academy will be on display
and continues to the Sala Nevera of Casa Morandi
which will feature modern and contemporary artworks
A particularly curious aspect is the inclusion of pop objects from China
all decorated with the iconography of the Last Supper
testify to the persistence of this image in the world of mass culture
Another striking section is devoted to fifty photographs of cenacles tattooed on human bodies
a sign of how this iconography continues to exert a deep fascination even outside the religious context
Expanding the exhibition are two prestigious city venues: the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Miracles
which houses the 16th-century wooden Last Supper by Andrea da Saronno and Alberto da Lodi
where Ugo La Pietra’s The Last Supper
an installation reflecting on the value of ceramics as a medium capable of preserving and handing down collective memory
The list of artists involved is exceptionally rich and varied
Alongside old masters of printmaking such as Raffaello Morghen
there are names of the contemporary world such as David LaChapelle
known for his photographic reinterpretations of the sacred tradition
The exhibition also features works by Hermann Nitsch
an exponent of Viennese Actionism; Daniel Spoerri
a pioneer of Nouveau Réalisme; and Joseph Beuys
who tackled the theme of spirituality with a conceptual approach
Fabrizio Garghetti and Wolf Vostell offer a reflection on the power of the sacred image in the age of mass communication
There is no shortage of Japan’s Tomoko Nagao
with her celebrated micropop reinterpretation of Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece
The exhibition will be enhanced by a calendar of side events
journalist and writer Luca Frigerio will give a lecture on Leonardo’s Last Supper
dedicated to Leonardo’s work and its influences in the history of art.On April 1
the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Miracles will host Tra chiese e cenacoli
a meeting that interweaves art and spirituality
organized by the Youth Pastoral of the Diocese of Milan.A special event is scheduled for Sunday
the opening day of the exhibition: from 11 a.m
Poste Italiane will make an exclusive philatelic cancellation dedicated to the exhibition
educational workshops and tours for high schools will be organized
with the possibility for students to become young cicerones of the exhibition
Special attention will be paid to accessibility
thanks to the use of special lenses for the visually impaired provided by the Flangini Volunteer Organization
the Cloister Art & Archives will host Objects in an Interior
The Dimension of the Sacred in Francesco De Rocchi and Gianfranco Ferroni
an exhibition curated by Giada Bulgari that explores the theme of spirituality through the paintings of the two artists
Promoted by the City of Saronno in collaboration with the Flangini Association
the exhibition boasts the patronage of the Lombardy Region
the Province of Varese and the Brera Academy of Fine Arts
The official catalog will be published by Silvana Editoriale
with the intensity of one who seeks no shortcuts
Each dish is a tale that weaves together familiar flavors and visionary ideas
local ingredients and suggestions gathered far away
“What do we want the guest to remember about us?” Take the stale bread ice cream with hazelnut cream: a tribute to the breakfasts of yesteryear
when yesterday's bread became the dessert of the day
Alfio has made a surprising dessert out of it
Or the rice mantecato with smoked eel and bittersweet onion
which seems like a portrait of the earth: humble
Each taste is crafted with the precision of an orchestra: scents that tell stories
that note that disorients you and invites you to look at each ingredient with new eyes
If the kitchen is the beating heart of Sui Generis
with her elegant smile and natural empathy
is the metronome of a service that flows smoothly and without smearing
“Our goal is for the customer to feel welcomed
The space is also designed to encourage this balance
almost imperceptible scents that let the dishes do the talking
Each season brings with it a different narrative
which Alfio and his team translate into vibrant dishes
mushrooms and chestnuts telling of the forest
with roots and fermentations that taste of time and patience
“We want each dish to be an invitation to live in the present moment
the journey to sustainability started with small steps: reducing waste
and today sustainability is central at Sui Generis
Even the menus tell a story: printed on recycled paper from coffee grounds and corn
a little reminder of how much we can do with what we usually discard
Alfio and Agata have a bigger dream: to engage the community
organize workshops to teach young people the value of sustainability,” they recount
“Only together can we create real change.”
The heart of the tasting menu is a love story: that of Cupid and Psyche
a powerful metaphor for the soul's journey to knowledge
But it is also a story of love for the planet
for the producers who work with respect and passion
“Love is the engine of everything,” Alfio says
“Every dish is a tribute to those who allow us to do what we do: our territory
and above all our guests.” And you can feel it in every dish
There is the care of those who know that food is not just nourishment
There is the passion of those who work with their hands
The experience at Sui Generis begins with an appetizer that immediately catches the eye: Comtes de Champagne 2013
paired with dishes such as mussel ricotta and lemon
turmeric nishiki rice nigiri with mirin lacquered sea bream and wasabi root
It continues with long-rising bread made with whole-grain flours from local ethical farms and kefir
accompanied by focaccia with extra virgin olive oil and rosemary
music paper with aged and smoked pecorino and Madagascar black pepper
hand-braided breadsticks with hortus aromatics and salt crystals
intense and surprising flavors follow one another
Sophie Cossy accompanies a sequence that includes oyster
Santa Margherita Ligure purple shrimp and wakame seaweed
and an intriguing sandwich with shrimp ham
rice mantecato with smoked eel and onion bittersweet
while squid ramen in katsuobushi broth finds its balance in Senkin Kamenoo
The second act offers a journey between cultures and traditions: vegetable dim sum with Chinese cabbage kimchi
Adriatic blue crab tacos with finger limes and gin apples
and wagyu empanadilla with Jerez de la Frontera vinegar and sesame mayo
a cappelletto stuffed with goose leg with Kanzi apples
bay leaf and applewood-smoked goose breast speck
precedes a succulent diaphragm with cannellini and hortus greens
the third act is a triumph of sweetness: Le Colibri Charmant Pineau
Fanny Fougerat introduces a tasting of Dekana pear with tonka bean
A journey that proves to be a tribute to memory
Sui Generis is not a restaurant you forget
The Nicolisi brothers have created something unique
an experience that goes beyond food to touch the deepest chords of those who experience it
the true meaning of Sui Generis: to remind you that the world is full of beauty
you just need to know how to see it with open eyes and an open heart

Do not sell or share my personal information:
you get the feeling of being in the right place to fully enjoy a special experience
Our grandparents used to say that "a good start is half the battle," well
It's known that dining at a Michelin-starred restaurant is a far cry from simply eating; it's experiencing something closer to enjoying a performance because haute cuisine is art
Watching Chef Alfio Nicolosi and his team move in the kitchen is like watching a dance
a marvelous choreography where everything works perfectly
It's a harmonious ballet where everything is beautifully in its place
The restaurant's choice is simple: a unique blind tasting menu that puts the chef's creativity at the center and meets a new
more attentive and conscious way of storytelling
Already from the chosen name - Love and Psyche - the intent is clear: to guide the guest through taste experiences that touch the emotions
A personal narrative of the happy encounter of three principles: the journey through space and time of Nicolosi's cuisine with the love and importance of seasonality
The diners move through the stages of this flavor tour
guided hand in hand to discover the soul of the chef and his numerous cultural and gastronomic experiences
Love and Psyche is based not only on the goodness of the elements but also on their ethical correctness
The choices are simple but aware: the preference for glass over plastic
but also the desire to ensure the restaurant staff a fair balance between life and work
Great attention is also paid to biodiversity
and the almost complete elimination of food waste
Another important element for Sui Generis's cuisine is the kitchen garden
the direct cultivation of edible plants and flowers allows the restaurant to fully meet its needs
And it is precisely from this sustainability and choice of seasonal ingredients that the dance of taste comes to life at Sui Generis
It all starts with a wonderful bread basket accompanied by oil and butter
The first act opens with finger foods that entice the customer to play with their senses
to loosen the tension of a too formal dinner
But the first act also features dishes like sea bream
a refreshing combination that cleanses the palate and prepares it for another creation by the chef
which is definitely one of the definitive tastes
Smoked eel rice and sweet and sour onion is one of those courses that can leave a lasting impression
a first course that could easily be a dessert
a mix of flavors that convinces and impresses
The second act once again features street food as the protagonist
and the engaging tongue bao with purple cabbage and tartare
The last savory dish that prepares the stomach to welcome the sweetness of the end of the meal
and cocoa that the end of the performance is celebrated
The applause then moves to the rhythm of the petit fours
and you are left alone with the memory of the taste
And it is at that moment that the experience is fixed in our mind and heart
A beautiful memory that allows us to enjoy the present moment and to thank ourselves for choosing to trust the chef and his staff
Disaronno owner Illva Saronno Group has appointed ex-Stoli executive Marco Ferrari as its new CEO from 1 October 2023
and most recently served as CEO for Italian spirits maker Gruppo Montenegro from 2014 to 2023
Ferrari will take over the CEO position from Aldino Marzorati
who will retain the role of president for Illva Saronno to ‘facilitate the transition’
Ferrari said: “I am thrilled to join a solid and successful group like Illva Saronno Group
I think there are all the ingredients to continue guiding it towards long-lasting growth
Illva Saronno Group has a history full of successes
“I will commit myself to give my contribution to make it bigger and bigger in a very competitive market
I thank the Reina family very much for their trust and Aldino for the excellent condition in which he leaves this wonderful company.”
Marzorati had worked alongside the late Augusto Reina, who was CEO of Illva Saronno until his death in February 2020
The Reina family said: “We are very pleased with the entry of Marco Ferrari into Illva Saronno Group
gained in multinational companies in the spirits and food sector
in which he has contributed to achieve a solid track record in terms of growth results
Illva Saronno will continue its growth and will capitalise on what has been achieved so far under the guidance of Aldino Marzorati
whom I thank on behalf of the entire board of directors for what he has done for the group
For almost 20 years he worked alongside Augusto Reina
making a great contribution to the growth of our brands in the world
to then become the first CEO external to the Reina family.”
Marzorati added: “I thank the members and all the stakeholders for having believed in me for more than 20 exciting years
[It was an intense] period with a lot of commitment and great responsibility
especially towards all the employees who accompanied me and allowed me to achieve exceptional results
I thank everyone for this exciting experience
I agreed with the board of directors that the time was right to transition to a new leader capable of leveraging Illva Saronno’s strengths and seizing the significant opportunities of the future
I leave to Marco a group that has grown over the years
and [he] will certainly be able to contribute to further growth
wishing him every personal and corporate success.”
In its full-year results ending 31 December 2022
Illva Saronno recorded a turnover of €321.9 million (US$355.9m)
and a consolidated net profit of €38.8m (US$42.9m)
This was accredited to ‘heavy investments in research and development’

Illva Saronno Holding S.p.A has acquired a majority stake in Baltimore’s Sagamore Spirit Distillery and Maryland Rye whiskey brand from founder Kevin Plank’s Sagamore Holdings for an undisclosed amount
The deal gives the makers of the Disaronno liqueur a foothold in the American whiskey market
as well as a new home for the company’s U.S
Disaronno International LLC will be moving its headquarters to the Baltimore Peninsula development where Sagamore Spirit’s distillery is located
the two major players that have seen exceptional growth have been American whiskey and tequila,” said Rob Cullins
Executive Vice President of Disaronno International
Rye is growing at a faster rate and is quite unique and differentiated from Bourbon
and when you go back and look at the history of whiskey making in the United States
they were actually making Rye whiskey in Maryland before Kentucky was making Bourbon
so there’s a legacy and a history…and so for us
it’s a perfect complement to get into the American whiskey space
but in a unique category and not a me-too like Bourbon but something very unique and differentiated
specifically,” he said in a telephone interview
will retain a minority stake in the distillery
which has been a cornerstone of his Baltimore Peninsula development in the former Port Covington industrial district

Italy’s Illva Saronno Split Up in “De-Merger”
2019 – The Irish Whiskey business has been booming in recent years
but there have been undercurrents of discontent amid all of the excitement
That played out in today’s announcement of a “de-merger” between Walsh Whiskey Company and Italy-based Illva Saronno
that amounts to the equivalent of a corporate divorce
The two companies joined forces in late 2013 with Illva Saronno making a major investment to help fund the €25 million ($34.1 million USD) construction of the Walsh Whiskey Company’s distillery near Carlow
I suppose…not all mergers and partnerships work out
and that’s what happened in this case,” Walsh Whiskey founder Bernard Walsh said in a telephone interview Friday morning
different views on where the company should go…the vision for the future
It’s very important to me we focus on premium and super-premium whiskies…our vision and the vision of our Italian partners were just not shared.”
The terms of the de-merger call for Illva Saronno to take full ownership of the distillery
which will be renamed the Royal Oak Distillery effective immediately
Walsh Whiskey will retain full ownership of its Writers’ Tears and The Irishman whiskey brands
while the two will continue to collaborate for now as Illva Saronno imports those brands into the United States
Illva Saronno executives were not available for interviews
spokesman Stefano Battioni provided this comment:
“Illva’s objective is to further enhance Royal Oak as a centre of excellence in Irish whiskey making by continuously improving its technology and processes
enhancing the visitor experience and achieving recognition as one of the best quality Irish whiskey producers in the market
Illva Saronno never reveals ahead of time it plans for the future
In any given moment we study developments for our spirits business based on our global vocation
We always look at way to exploit the best opportunity offered by the global market environments that is our natural habitat
and by our strong distribution network that covers 160 countries making international markets responsible for more than 90% of our turnover.”
Production and visitors center staff at Royal Oak will be employed directly by Illva Saronno going forward
while the sales and marketing team at Walsh’s office in Carlow will remain with Walsh Whiskey
None of the whiskey distilled at Royal Oak since it opened has reached maturity
meaning there will be no impact on the Walsh Whiskey brands
Walsh’s supply contracts with Irish Distillers provide for enough whiskey to meet growing demand for both brands worldwide
“We’ve grown that business three-fold
we’re inheriting a business which is three times bigger
and I am very confident that we will double the size of that business in the next three years,” Walsh said
the loss of the distillery remains a personal blow for Bernard and Rosemary Walsh following years of work to build the brands first and then a place to make their own whiskey
we oversaw every pound of concrete that was poured into the distillery
every piece of wrought iron for the supports
we were there right the way through…it was something that we absolutely loved doing
that chapter of Irish Whiskey distilling in Carlow and in Southeast Ireland which had been absent for 200 years
and now it’s up to our Italian friends to write the next chapter.”

The Moodie Davitt Report brings you the latest instalment in our popular series Ten Easy Pieces*
in which we get up close and personal with leading travel retail personalities via ten snapshot questions
Meet Illva Saronno Global Sales Director Domenico Toni
a football-loving twin who has played a pivotal role in the Italian drinks company’s multinational development
It’s currently one of the ‘coolest’ places in Italy
great food and beautiful beaches which make it unique
I am part of a large family of six children
With my brother and my sisters it seemed I always had to fight to get the best piece of cake; but we were
Both my parents were professors so discipline and education were important ingredients of my childhood
But I was also crazy about sport and any free time
was spent playing soccer with my brother and friends
We didn’t care if it rained or it was good weather; the important thing was to have a ball and somehow it immediately created a football field
From Southern Italy you moved north to Milan to study
What cultural changes did you face and what was your plan for the future
From an early age I had a passion for mathematics and economics
And I had a dream to work in the financial markets and the stock exchange
So after completing high school I decided to move to Milan to study finance
To move from a small town where I knew everyone
which was full of resources but where I had to learn to get by myself
The change of lifestyle was radical and sometimes difficult
I had the opportunity to realise my ambition to live in Italy’s most dynamic city
and to feel closer to a world which was typical of Wall Street
the film with Michael Douglas that inspired my passion for the world of finance
How did a summer job with Coca-Cola change your life
After graduation I received a job offer from Coca-Cola as a merchandiser for three months over the summer period
So I had the opportunity to get closer to the world of sales and marketing and discovered that it was just as fascinating as the financial sector
a great school; the perfect learning place
When I was asked to stay on in the company as a sales representative
Thus began my career in sales and that continued with another major FMCG company
What led to you to the drinks industry and Illva Saronno
At the end of 2009 I was contacted by Illva to contribute to the cultural and organisational change that the company wanted to develop
It wanted to approach the drinks business with a more multinational mindset
considering the cultural gap between multinational companies in which I had worked until then
And then there was the interest in a sector
which was definitely more fun than detergent for washing machines
How is Illva Saronno adapting to market changes and what role have you played in its development
Illva Saronno is a company led by a bright and clear-thinking entrepreneur who always looks to the future
This has enabled the development of a radical cultural and organisational change
which has seen the company evolve from a traditional approach
with offices abroad and overseas development particularly in the USA
with the presence of sales people in all the main markets
thus allowing the acceleration of the implementation of its brand strategy
reinforcing the contact with the markets and consumers
we were only three sales managers to manage the global business
Today the organisation boasts more than 90 people around the world
Illva Saronno’s main brand is Disaronno, which is the most-sold Italian liqueur. The revolution has also involved the communication strategy of the brand, with the limited-edition Icon which has become a pillar for the brand’s image and sales in recent years
I am pleased to say that I have played a major role in those changes
with the support of a great team of course
is the greatest challenge facing the drinks category in travel retail
I see the spirits category changing a lot in the coming six or seven years
with the development of more travel retail-exclusive products and entire ranges in some cases
must not and cannot focus only on offering quality products
It must develop the promotional mechanics required to offer experiences
with the signature drinks playing a fundamental role
digital and online business will make the difference in the near future
Have you estimated how many countries you have visited
Recently I had fun calculating how many countries I have visited
It was more than 50 but that still represents only 20% of all countries in the world
That figure would work for the past 12 months
You describe yourself as a passionate traveller
My wife Laura and I have travelled a lot together
We buy only the return ticket and then we try to live the country we are visiting
in contact with the local population and the culture of the place
Every time we travel we return full of emotions
We are doing the same with our children Eleonora and Gabriele now; and we are still backpacking
The choice to travel as a backpacker is connected with the difference between being a tourist and a traveller; the importance of being in contact with the local people and experiencing the place you are visiting
You have to taste the quality of the coffee
Good coffee is like good wine… it not only completes the taste of a lunch but also improves the quality of the day
I follow football as a fan of the great AC Milan and also support my hometown team
I play football with friends a few times during the year but not that often
And I follow my children who compete on a regional and national level
I also work out every day; that combines relaxation and keeping in shape
I try to do a 45-minute work-out or I jog or swim
The Cure was the first band I saw in concert
I remember travelling to Rome by train to see them; I slept in the station but it was worth it
The last group I saw live was U2 in Turin in 2012
