is now Head of Simulation Learning and Support Services at Leonardo’s Customer Support & Training division in Sesto Calende
Learning and Support Services organisational unit
mission and maintenance training systems and creates and supports mission and diagnostic planning systems
A sector that requires an almost ‘fanatical’ attention to customer care
these include MITHOS (Modular Interactive Trainer for Helicopter Operators)
a simulator specifically designed and developed by Leonardo for training helicopter rescue operators
which physically and virtually replicates dangerous and complex interventions
preparing the crew to react promptly in an emergency situation
“My entire career has been a series of ever-changing challenges
the skills required to achieve these goals have been the common denominator throughout his professional growth
right from the very first projects he worked on at the company
which all involve constant improvement and the ability to build on experience
motivation and a passion that began when he was still at university
which also responds to that certain curiosity he has for a number of disciplines in the world of simulation
Claudio recommends Leonardo as a place for young people to work
because: “it’s a company that allows you to do
grow and gain experience in a variety of areas
from strictly technical aspects to management
in an environment that is international by its very nature”

Leonardo-Finmeccanica has announced the first Level D full flight simulator for the new generation AgustaWestland AW169 light intermediate helicopter obtained ENAC (Ente Nazionale Aviazione Civile – Italian Civil Aviation Authority) and European Aviation Safety Administration (EASA) certification on June 30
Based at the Leonardo Training Academy in Sesto Calende
the new simulator will be used to deliver advance pilot training course for world customers
Level D standard allows one hour flown on the simulator to be equal to one hour flown on the real helicopter for maximized safety and reduced operating cost
jointly developed by Leonardo and CAE to EASA Level D
the joint venture owned equally by CAE and Leonardo
The simulator features unprecedented realism for helicopter-specific mission training
The simulator enables pilots to practice challenging procedures without risk such as low-level flight
autorotation and landing on platforms at sea
The event marks a major milestone in the AW169 program and the first ever implementation of the EASA operational suitability data (OSD) process for helicopters as per the new authority’s requirements issued in January 2014
to submit data EASA considers important for safe operations
maintenance staff and simulator qualification
The certification of the first full flight simulator for the AW169 completes the comprehensive range of training solutions offer for the type
which also include flight training device (FTD)
distance learning course and traditional classroom training
A dedicated training helicopter is also available for live flight training
Since AW169-dedicated customer training started in 2015
more than 85 pilots and 160 engineers have been trained on the new helicopter type
The Sesto Calende’s Training Academy is now the first ever simulation training center featuring the entire product family of Level D – full flight simulators also including the AW139 and the AW189 models
The relevant full flight simulators are located in the same purpose built building
featuring same CAE S3000 Series technology
thus maximizing commonality approach and easing the transition among the Family helicopters
This major result is achieved in the occasion of the 10th anniversary of training operations in Sesto Calende where Leonardo has seen an impressive steady growth of pilot and maintenance technicians trained from approximately 600 in 2006 to almost 7000 in 2015
The facility dedicated to ‘Alessandro Marchetti’ started with one single AW109 Power Level D FFS in 2006 and today it features six full flight simulators
three flight training devices and six full maintenance trainers covering the AW109 Power
Since its grand opening and operational readiness in June 2006
the Sesto Calende’s Training Academy has logged in excess of 130,000 flight simulator hours
more than 60,000 flight hours on company’s and customers’ helicopters
and became the first Federal Aviation Administration Helicopter Part 142 in Europe

Perfect for exploring on foot and by canoe
just 30 minutes from Milan by car or train (most of the towns mentioned here are on train lines from Milan)
plunging and rushing its rocky way (much-loved by kayakers) down to Lake Maggiore
where it sneaks into Italy under cover of the lake to reappear in altogether more placid form at the picturesque town of Sesto Calende
That’s where we’re going to start our trip
Ahead of us are about 60 glorious miles south to Pavia
where the Ticino surrenders its glacial waters to the more majestic Po
despite its proximity to half a dozen ancient towns
this river has been left absolutely to its own meandering devices
over white shale banks through woods of elm and willow
If you crave the utterly and amiably natural
the river is no more than ordinarily adorable
a wide expanse of transparent water between wooded slopes
neatly embanked to allow picturesque villas to prick your envy and waterside restaurants to offer generous fry-ups of pesciolini e rane
having surrendered some volume to human enterprise
the rest of the river is now free to wander where it will
tipping and murmuring this way and that round pebble banks or thick mounds of reeds and flowering robinia

Photograph: AlamyWhen the water swells with the spring snowmelt it uproots whole trees and carries them off
perfect perching places for herons and cormorants
Elegant egrets prod the shallows with their sharp beaks
Kingfishers flit and woodpeckers make themselves heard in the trees
Standing still in the dense undergrowth at the waterside
you’ll be hard put to distinguish all the different chirrups and trills
Not to mention the steady insect hum that pulses in the summer air
they sometimes refer to tracks the river may have swallowed up a decade ago
Follow a quiet track to its end and often enough you’ll find some humble no-profit development where locals are enjoying a glass of wine under battered sunshades
perhaps bathing or fishing or simply soaking up the busy hush of it all
it is Europe’s oldest functioning long-distance canal
So that’s another walk or cycle ride to consider
taking in the ancient centres of Robecco sul Naviglio and Abbiategrasso
Despite a few moments when the insects become a bit annoying
it’s really hard to imagine a better day out
