A few days after the Mite obtained the final decree for the East section (the one that connects Sicily and Campania)
this start-up marks a decisive advance towards the opening of the construction sites of one of the main infrastructural works in the country
The Ministry of Ecological Transition has formally launched the authorization procedure for the “Tyrrhenian Link - West Branch”
the 480-kilometer section that will connect Sicily and Sardinia of Terna's 3,7 billion euro submarine power line
A few days after Mite obtained the definitive decree for the East section (the one that connects Sicily and Campania)
the start of the authorization procedure for the West section marks a decisive advance towards the opening of the construction sites of one of the main works infrastructure of the country
essential for the development and safety of the national electricity system
The infrastructure that will connect Sicily to Sardinia will mark an important milestone in the laying of submarine power connections; in fact
with peaks up to 2150 meters below sea level
Terna sent Mite the request for authorization for the construction and operation of the work
following the closure of the public consultation phase during which the company spoke with citizens and all the Sardinian and Sicilian administrations involved
"With the start of the authorization process for the west section of the Thyrrenian Link
which follows the authorization of the East section in record time by MiTE
we have given a further acceleration to the path that will lead to the realization of a fundamental work for the electricity system of our country ”
"It is important to proceed quickly so that the new infrastructure will soon be at the service of the national electricity system
so as to favor the development of renewable sources which today represent the real alternative to Russian gas"
Based on the evidence that emerged during the six "Terna Meetings" organized with the institutions and local communities of Termini Imerese (in the province of Palermo) and of Maracalagonis
Settimo San Pietro and Sinnai (in the province of Cagliari)
the localization solutions of the future conversion stations and the route of the underground cables that will reach the same stations from the land landing of the submarine cable have been identified
from the landing of the Terra Mala submarine cable
the underground cables will mainly travel along existing roads for about 30 km
leaving the environment and landscape unaltered
where the conversion station in adjacent areas will be built
the submarine cables will land in Fiumetorto
From here the underground cables will cover a 7 km route along the existing road up to Termini Imerese
where the conversion station will be built near the current electricity station
and in particular the subjects interested in the work
will be able to view the project and possibly submit written observations to the Ministry of Ecological Transition within 30 days from the date of publication of the start of the procedure
Terna will invest approximately 3,7 billion euros for the project
involving around 250 companies in the construction of the project
The new infrastructure will allow greater integration between the different market areas and a more effective use of energy flows from renewable sources
the Tyrrhenian Link will play a decisive role in improving the reliability of the network and of the entire electrical system by contributing to its safety and adequacy
The new interconnection is a cutting-edge project that involves the construction of two submarine power lines of 1000 MW each in direct current (one from Campania to Sicily and one from Sicily to Sardinia) for a total length of about 970 km and land connections of about 60 km
The work will be fully operational in 2028
but the first cable - the one relating to the Eastern Branch - will be operational as early as the end of 2025

The present terminus of the Cagliari tramway is on the site of the former FdS railway station at Piazza Repubblica
ITALY: Work has started on a long-planned extension of Cagliari’s 950 mm gauge tramway to link the existing terminus at Piazza Repubblica with the main railway station
the 2·5 km extension will add six stops including an interchange at the main line station
The project is mostly being funded from EU grants
and lead contractor is the Integra Consortium
Work began on March 27 and construction is due for completion within 836 days
Operated by Sardinian transport authority ARST
Cagliari’s 12 km network is formed of two routes
mostly using moribund Ferrovie della Sardegna railway alignments
while Line 2 runs as a tram-train over 4 km of railway tracks from a junction at Gottardo to reach Settimo San Pietro
ARST has a fleet of six Škoda 06T cars delivered ahead of the line’s opening in 2008
plus three CAF Urbos vehicles which entered traffic in April 2018
ITALY: Sardinian transport operator ARST and Ferrovie della Calabria have placed a joint order for 12 hydrogen powered multiple-units
The €156m contract awarded to Stadler on June 19 is being funded from Italy’s National Recovery & Resilience Plan
ITALY: Three CAF trams entered service in Cagliari on April 21 as part of the 950 mm gauge network’s 10th anniversary celebrations
Sardinia transport authority ARST ordered the vehicles in 2013
and the first arrived in Cagliari in November 2016
