The 2025 Reporters Without Borders’ Press Freedom Index and report, published today describe a marked deterioration of press freedom around the world with journalists and media facing difficult economic conditions and journalists in the US operating in an increasingly hostile environment RSF has classified the state of press freedom globally as in a “difficult situation,” noting that following several years of decline the conditions for journalism are now rated “poor” in half the world’s countries and the average score of all assessed countries has fallen to 55 — a new low point RSF notes in its report that while physical attacks against journalists are the most visible violations of press freedom pressure from advertisers or financial backers and restricted public financing — is also a major problem and is “more insidious.” Of the five main indicators RSF uses to determine the World Press Freedom Index rankings the indicator that measures the financial conditions of journalism is at its lowest point in history and plurality in today’s media landscape requires stable and transparent financial conditions,” said Anne Bocondé “The media economy must urgently be restored to a state that is conducive to journalism and ensures the production of reliable information there can be no free press,” she added “When news media are financially strained they are drawn into a race to attract audiences at the expense of quality reporting.” is now classified in the “problematic situation” category Local news in the US in particular has been adversely affected by financial difficulties with “vast regions” becoming news deserts and the country’s social indicator — which assesses the sociocultural context in which journalists operate — has fallen 28 places amid unprecedented distrust of the media RSF cites the Trump administration’s abrupt end to funding for the US Agency for Global Media — which runs Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty — and USAID as examples of the administration’s attacks on the free press The report also notes that the situation for journalists in Palestine (ranked 163rd) where hundreds of journalists have been killed reporting on the Gaza conflict The global average score in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index has fallen to 55 “Those who stand up to the State are often journalists, and Jimmy Lai and his now defunct Apple Daily newsroom are not forgotten,” he wrote in a piece for WAN-IFRA has been charged with sedition and conspiring to collude with foreign forces His lawyers say he has been “prosecuted for being a journalist.” He is one of 10 reporters featured on a list of the most urgent press freedom cases created by the One Free Press Coalition of “journalists who are incarcerated or facing injustice.” Also on the list this year are reporters in the Philippines and Kyrgyzstan — two of whom are investigative reporters Two of the reporters on last year’s list — the Wall Street Journal’s Evan Gershkovich and RFE/RL’s Alsu Kurmasheva were released in a Russian prisoner swap Another journalist on the list was Victoria Roshchyna the founding director of the Journalism Protection Initiative and previously the executive director of the CPJ warned that “among countries experiencing a slide into autocracy censoring the media is a favored strategy.” “Once autocratization takes hold, it is very difficult to reverse,” he wrote in a WAN-IFRA piece. “But where it has been thwarted it’s because the free media held its ground continuing to report the news with bravery and determination This is the duty of journalists everywhere.” Reflecting on the rapidly changing press freedom situation in the US warned that “a coordinated attack is already underway” in Donald Trump’s America “Radio Free Europe, Radio Free Asia, and Voice of America have been shut down. Congress is moving to defund public media like NPR and PBS,” he said in an interview with Mateusz Mazzini, the reporter-at-large at Poland’s Gazeta Wyborcza “Then there’s the case of the Associated Press This historic agency has been completely cut off from the White House simply for using the globally accepted term ‘Gulf of Mexico,’ instead of Trump’s preferred ‘Gulf of America.'” “Trump has also taken control over which reporters have access to him. That used to be the job of the White House Correspondents’ Association. Now, Trump decides who can ask questions,” Baron added Across the investigative journalism community GIJN has heard uniform voices of solidarity and numerous creative strategies for surviving this fundraising crisis To dismantle VOA and other US-funded affiliates would be to silence decades of coverage in overlooked parts of the world on topics like human rights Investigative journalists across the region talk about their biggest challenges — from repressive laws and surveillance to funding cuts Sevgil Musaieva on the challenges of reporting during war and the dilemma facing journalists who want to fight for their country Please enable JS and disable any ad blocker This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks The action you just performed triggered the security solution There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase You can email the site owner to let them know you were blocked Please include what you were doing when this page came up and the Cloudflare Ray ID found at the bottom of this page FlaglerLive September 3, 2024 | | 9 Comments Joseph Michael Siano said this afternoon he knows “there’s a place in hell waiting for me when the time comes.” First he’ll have to serve 15 years in prison Joseph Siano. That was Perkins’s sentence McGeehan said the state had never made an offer so pleading was the only alternative because Siano did not want to put the family through a trial McGeehan underscored the fact that for eight years his client had not had a drunk driving violation or “any violation,” and that he’d expressed remorse He did not specify the sentence he was seeking for his client McGeehan asked him what punishment he thought the judge should give him “I deserve whatever he wants to give me,” Siano said offering an unusually personal preface to his sentence “I went to law school a long time to help people,” he said “This is not one of those circumstances where I can help Daley’s family is palpable and indescribable and I want you to know that I heard that testimony and I accept them.” He then pronounced Siano guilty of DUI manslaughter and DUI with property damage He gave him 418 days’ credit on the 15-year sentence when Siano was looking to bond out and Perkins denied him the motion Perkins had remarked that he was willing to bet that someone had told Siano over the years that sooner or later he’d kill somebody if he didn’t stop drinking and driving With “gain time,” or up to a 15 percent reduction on his sentence for good behavior he would leave prison in less than 12 years Joseph Siano has no excuse for any of this She would have helped him get sober and better his life because that’s all she wanted for anyone she was killed and ripped from a community that looked up to her That night I arrived on the scene of the crash and saw her car To think about what she was feeling in that moment kills me begging for an answer as to why this happened September 3, 2024 at 5:44 pm September 3, 2024 at 8:37 pm In this country certain violators get too many chances This type of situation plays over and over in this country victims have to bare the pain of the don’t care attitude from the pro criminal laws September 3, 2024 at 9:05 pm September 4, 2024 at 9:21 am September 4, 2024 at 9:21 am September 4, 2024 at 11:50 am September 6, 2024 at 2:37 pm I was on US-1 the night of this accident and was fortunate enough to see Mr Siano heading towards me in the wrong lane and had a chance to move out of his way A split second later I heard the crash behind me He never slowed down and never showed awareness of his surroundings as there was a curve behind me that would have blocked her vision of his heading towards her While I can’t imagine his sentence brings the family much peace he is off the road and will never again have the opportunity to ruin lives with his reckless behavior Ongoing prayers of peace of comfort to the Daley family; what a senseless tragedy September 6, 2024 at 3:36 pm Thank you for contributing this eyewitness account Ms September 8, 2024 at 5:53 pm Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. behind the trophy with his hand on his hat Vermont celebrates after defeating Marshall in the NCAA College Cup national championship soccer final in Cary Ethan Czaporowski isn’t a stranger to game-winning goals in sudden-death overtime championship game situations Although Czaporowski was ecstatic and stormed the field with the rest of his University of Vermont teammates after Maximilian Kissel evaded Marshall’s goalie before sending home the national-championship winning tally on Monday night the former Belchertown High School soccer star can’t say he hasn’t seen something very similar done before A golden moment for the Catamounts 🤩#MCollegeCup x 🎥ESPN2 / @UVMmsoccer pic.twitter.com/se9J3TGMDE it was Czaporowski himself who converted on a play exactly like Kissel — although Czaporowski was a freshman suiting up in black and orange for the Orioles Locked in a scoreless tie in overtime against Medway in the 2019 MIAA Division 3 state final Czaporowski received a long boot from a Belchertown defenseman He had only one defender running with him stride-for-stride in between him and Medway’s goalie Czaporowski controlled the ball with his chest got it to his feet and separated from Medway’s defense without breaking stride he wrapped a beautiful right-footed shot around the keeper and into the bottom right part of the goal – crowning Belchertown as 2019 state champions and Kissel gave Orioles head coach Zach Siano who coached Czaporowski for two seasons at Belchertown a sense of déjà vu with a carbon-copy strike – again crowning Czaporowski a champion “It was eerily reminiscent of Ethan’s goal where it was just a big ball over the top and the forward out-paced the center back,” Siano said “It was a mirror image of Ethan’s goal in the 2019 state finals Although Czaporowski didn’t see the field during his first season with the Catamounts Siano has a strong feeling the redshirt sophomore – who started his career with Virginia Tech before transferring to Vermont – still made his mark When Czaporowski played for Siano at Belchertown he was always one of the hardest workers in practice That mindset is precisely what led him to play Division 1 college soccer and he likely pushed his teammates during training throughout the season because those traits Siano described haven’t gone anywhere “He was tenacious on all levels,” Siano recalled “He was one of the hardest-working practice players I’ve ever seen in my life some of the guys might go through the motions in practice but Ethan was trying to get himself better in some capacity every single day just a great quality of someone who really wants to be the best when he has the possibility to be it.” yet he already has spent most of his life taking calculated risks to better his situation After leading Belchertown in goals and assists as a freshman (which earned him 2019 Gazette Player of the Year) and scoring a whopping nine goals in five games during his COVID-shortened sophomore season Czaporowski decided to do away with high school soccer playing with the Boston Bolts in USL League 2 and MLS Next as he earned a scholarship to play ACC soccer at Virginia Tech And when things didn’t go as planned in Blacksburg Czaporowski once more had to make a tough choice He ended up transferring to Vermont for the 2024 season That turned out to be another decision he got right “For him to take a big leap and go to Virginia Tech as a true freshman and then make the bold decision to transfer to Vermont it seems like it’s paying off for him,” Siano said Catamounts teammate TJ Liquori of Westfield is another western Mass former Belchertown standout Joseph Bianco made a run to the Elite Eight this season Western Massachusetts – and Hampshire County specifically – was well represented in this year’s NCAA Division 1 men’s soccer tournament so to see us have several players on different teams in this tournament In Siano’s classroom at Westfield High School a giant printed picture of Czaporowski’s cold-blooded game-winner hangs above his desk He sees it every single time he walks in to work and is reminded of one of the best moments in Belchertown soccer history “I told [Czaporowski] I’m eternally grateful to him for that moment and to see him rewarded for all of his hard work across the board is a great thing to see.” Villages-News.com It is with great sadness that Echoes of certain human activities, especially highly-polluting ones, sometimes show up in tree rings, coastal sediments and ecosystems. Arguably, these traces are hints of the Anthropocene a proposed geological epoch in which humanity is said to have irrevocably is written into the very fabric of our planet – and the life that co-exists here with us Siano and his colleagues are predominantly ecologists but they also work with historians. "The land changed because of human impact and also because of historical events," Siano says. When the team analysed the sediment cores from Brest they also detected a gradual rise in heavy metal pollution as time passed Younger layers of sediment contained higher volumes of mercury The report notes there were similar levels of some of these metals – especially lead and chromium – in Pearl Harbour, a major US naval base in Hawaii that was heavily bombed by Japanese warplanes in 1941 Siano adds that he can't be sure whether these metals came directly from the bombs themselves there is a signal in both Brest and Pearl Harbour of a calamitous Even Roman metallurgy, from many centuries ago, has left its mark. One 2022 study found a noticeable rise in lead contamination in ice correlated with the development of Roman industry It is sometimes difficult to be sure which specific events caused spikes in lead contamination The bomb turned buildings into dust… and spread this material across the nearby landscape – marking it foreverJean-Luc Loizeau at the University of Geneva has studied the sediment of Lake Geneva particularly the material found in a small area of the lake near to a wastewater treatment plant He says the sediment there contains many traces of human activities the way water moves around in this part of the lake has helped to preserve such clues "It accumulates because there is a kind of gyre that keeps the sediment within the bay," he says, referring to Vidy Bay, on the northern shores of the lake. In a 2017 paper he and colleagues describe the heavy metal pollution that became evident here in sediment layers dating to the 1930s Among the specific examples he gives is a spike in mercury contamination during the 1970s Besides metals, radioactive materials have also found applications in various industries. In Switzerland, for instance, radium was long used to make glow-in-the-dark details on watch faces. Remnants of radium from the watchmaking industry have turned up in landfill sites and buildings in the country And scattered around the globe are pieces of evidence that reveal the grim legacy left by nuclear weapons during the 20th Century. Take the giant craters in the Nevada desert made by huge weapons tests But some contamination caused by nuclear detonations is much more subtle In 2019, researchers revealed that some of the grains of sand on beaches near the Japanese city of Hiroshima are in fact particles of debris created when the US dropped an atomic bomb on the city on 6 August 1945 "The chemical composition of the melt debris provides clues to their origin particularly with regard to city building materials," the authors wrote heat from the explosion reshaped that dust and the blast ultimately spread this material across the nearby landscape – marking it forever Remnants of nuclear explosions are not confined to the outdoors. They may be in your attic, too. Attic dust often lies undisturbed for decades – unlike urban soil which is more likely to be disturbed – so traces of contaminants may remain A study published in 2003 reports the results of a survey of 201 homes in the US state of New Jersey Among the traces the researchers found there were lead concentrations that roughly correlated with the prevalence of lead in air pollution during the 20th Century But they also found small amounts of Caesium-137 This was more common the older the property was and could perhaps be explained by the frequency of above ground nuclear weapons tests in the US – especially during the 1950s and 1960s Siano and his colleagues are now looking further afield in their search for clues of human history embedded in nature The team has collected more than 120 sediment cores from nine different countries around Europe with the hope of finding further correlations between historical events and trace DNA or metal contamination left in those cores "We can look for the impacts of the Vesuvius volcano [eruption] in Naples," says Siano, noting that the volcano last erupted in 1944. And here, as in other locations, the team may also detect signs of radioactive material ejected during the Chernobyl disaster – contamination from the accident having spread to over 40% of Europe evidence of everything from oil spills to the development of oyster farms may have been locked away in the sediment "We have all the material to answer these questions," he says For more science, technology, environment and health stories from the BBC, follow us on FacebookX and Instagram. Hip-hop as a local New York City phenomenon was well underway when the Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight” broke through in 1979 brought an electronic foundation to post-disco disco music that has continued through myriad new subgenres and international offshoots It’s probably too much to say, in a cause-and-effect sense, that disco changed politics, or that politics created disco. But every movement has its signature sounds, whether it’s the folk and gospel that accompanied the civil rights movement or the psychedelic music that underscored antiwar protests later in the decade. But the music and the movement(s) advanced hand in hand, even as the wider culture followed at a distance. And dancing and dance music are almost by definition liberating, going back forever in every place and culture, and as such have been labeled dangerous by agents of the status quo. The sounds and the steps change, and one generation’s inventions may be regarded as quaint by the next — which might be regarded as a kind of progress — but in their time they can shake, and shake up, the world. One of those helpers, Dylan Saladino, said his girlfriend has set up a GoFundMe at tinyurl.com/PauliSiano to raise $50,000 for the man who had his livelihood stripped from him There were no injuries as a result of the fire that reportedly started in the garage’s roof shortly before 10:30 p.m The adjacent house Siano has lived in since 1976 was unaffected expensive equipment he has accumulated said has received countless phone calls from people offering their assistance Saladino said he is planning a March 30 benefit dinner and raffle at the Greenfield Elks Lodge 1296 on Federal Street He Dan Smith previously said the blaze was difficult to access with hotspots popping up and keeping firefighters busy for hours Crews remained on scene until around 3:30 a.m Smith said firefighters the last 10 years “I’m willing to bet somewhere along the way a friend or family member said to him: You’re gonna kill somebody if you don’t stop that You’re gonna kill somebody,” Circuit Judge Terence Perkins said today It’s not clear what he did between the time he was cashed out and the crash But instead of taking the northbound lanes He drove on as cars going south passed him At least two separate drivers who were going south told a Florida Highway Patrol trooper that they were certain something terrible would happen Siano crashed head-on into the Chevy Malibu Lee-Ann Daley was driving The 46-year-old mother of three was killed after a bond hearing where Siano’s attorney argued that he should be allowed to post bond and be supervised away from the jail Perkins in an extremely rare ruling upheld his original decision: Siano walking with a walker and is facing cancer surgery for the removal of a lung will remain at the county jail on no bond until his trial Several members of Daley’s family were in the courtroom Joseph Siano.Perkins acknowledged the extraordinary nature of the case “In every circumstance that I’m aware of the court has set bond on charges just like this,” the judge told the attorneys “I can’t think of a single case since I’ve been in Flagler where I issued no-bond warrant for these types of charges Nor can I think of a circumstance when I was in the felony division in Daytona These kinds of charges were much more common I can’t think of a single one where I entered a no-bond warrant does the defendant under these circumstances either present a flight risk or presented danger to the community?” questioned Slocum about the seven months between the time of the crash and Siano’s arrest “Did you take any steps during that seven-month period to safeguard the community against Mr Siano?” the attorney asked the trooper later clarifying that it’s common practice for FHP to spend many months completing the investigation McGeehan said Siano had never before skipped on court hearings “The state had to go back 10 years to look for something in this particular case,” he said Assistant State Attorney Jason Lewis argued to the court that Siano knew what he was doing “He obviously showed exactly what happens when someone under the influence of alcohol drives a vehicle,” Lewis said noting that as soon as his probation ended on the first DUI case he was charged with his second DUI less than a month afterward This is about safety to the community.” the judge said that Siano “didn’t learn on those two prior occasions went on probation went through all of that all of that stuff that goes with all of those dry conditions He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted His first pre-trial hearing is in September July 19, 2023 Made with love by funeralOne a “macabre and mystical dream cabaret“ by Opal Peachey and Mark Siano is a glamorous look back at the Belle Epoque when artists and their followers sought aesthetic exaltation—and occasionally found death—in a glass of “the Green Fairy.” 27 (each night but Monday) at the Triple Door Art Nouveau poster artist Alphonse Mucha inspired the look of the show Dvorak and Chopin provide background music and a cast of 10 handles the aerial numbers Siano himself plays Czech composer Antonin Dvorak (1841–1904) seeks his Muse in the decadent drink (Showgoers who spring for VIP seating get a sample.) I recently asked Siano whence came the ideas behind this bejeweled stage fantasia Hisam Goueli as Malabron and Isobella bloom curled up How extensive is the burlesque aspect of Bohemia Is it something like a Lily Verlaine/Jasper McCann show where the dance numbers are the focus within a fanciful setting Burlesque is just a small part of the entire show—two numbers total: one original song that’s a duet and the other is a boudoir-style derobing to Debussy’s “Clair de Lune.” It’s more of a cabaret in the classical sense of the word; many different artistic disciplines grace the stage but the narrative makes it feel similar to musical theater Chopin is played live onstage; fairies dance; there are original compositions by myself and [music director] Dayton Allemann; lots of singing; there’s a saucy host named Wormwood; sketch comedy and dramatic scene work are almost half the show; and there’s aerial and circus pieces too that you wouldn’t usually see in musical theater but that’s also what makes it unique is that there really is no single genre we do a ritualized absinthe service with the dancers at intermission—this is very uncommon Opal Peachey and I call it a cabaret musical but that only encapsulates a smidgen of it since conventional wisdom sees him as a particularly untroubled composer Nice Guy among the romantics—nowhere near as messed up as And he certainly isn’t regarded as any kind of avant-garde or “progressive” composer The original inspiration for this show came during an absinthe-fueled adventure stumbling around Prague On the river we encountered a giant Dvorak statue and I began humming his Ninth Symphony ad nauseam for the rest of the night Dvorak worked for this story because he was stable played by Hisam Goueli] suggests that he should leave Prague since his work was starting to be taken for granted: “We’re sick of you Dvorak!” He needed something fresh to capture the world’s attention “How do you get people to give a damn about classical music?” is the opening line of your press release My solution is present it unconventionally—cabaret is an excellent way to bring classical to people who would avoid it otherwise I think the
