See our disclosures In the latest viral trend that TikTok built, the Silvi pillowcase is on the fast track to becoming a cult classic. And while silk pillowcases have long-topped desert island must-haves lists for many beauty enthusiasts, this latest video (that’s already racked up 23M views) finds one TikTok user leaning into his inner scientist to make his case for switching to silk pillowcases In this eye-opening (and, can we add, incredibly gross?) experiment, @peakplant cuts a swatch from his partner’s cotton pillowcase and a swatch from a Silvi pillowcase He then puts each swatch in its respective petri dish and logs the results over the course of a week the cotton swatch is riddled with bacteria while the Silvi swatch remains clean and clear we did some digging on the Silvi pillowcase to get to the bottom of this mystery So, while silk is the headliner for the Silvi pillowcase, it looks like the devil’s in the details — or in this case, the silver. With medicinal uses dating back thousands of years silver has long been known for its antimicrobial properties and Silvi has dusted off this powerful antibacterial agent and incorporated it into the brand’s The Anti-Acne™ Silk Pillowcase Silvi promises that its pillowcases can “eliminate 99.7 percent of bacteria linked to acne and topical skin concerns.” In 30 days Silvi claims that their pillowcases can curb and prevent a host of skin and hair concerns Beyond digging into the science here to corroborate @peakplant’s claims that silver and silk make great bedfellows, we noticed that the Silvi silk pillowcase has over 2,000 five-star reviews Real-world users shared their stories of real-world performance and it looks like Silvi lives up to the hype It’s not hard to argue that silk “anything” is insta-worthy so there’s no shortage of folks hocking silk pillowcases on every platform with pretty photos and videos Some have even thrown in their two cents about the supposed benefits of said pillowcases the claims often center around nourishing your skin and regulating temperatures while you sleep Dr. Debra Jaliman, a board-certified NYC dermatologist and author of the book, Skin Rules: Trade Secrets from a Top New York Dermatologist “silk allows your skin to glide over the surface of the pillow it can help prevent fine lines or “sleep lines,” she says Ingrid Leo a resident doctor at Kliniken Valens in Switzerland adds that silk isn’t as absorbent as cotton so “sleeping on silk helps to preserve natural moisture and hydration.” That’s why most people wake up feeling like their skin is smoother and their wrinkles have seemingly ironed out overnight “Silk is a good thermoregulator and naturally hypoallergenic fabric that helps keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.” So, if you’re looking to manage nighttime hot flashes or you want to make your forty winks a bit cozier Leo cautions that while silk has a lot going for it “it may be less effective at absorbing sweat so more frequent spot cleaning may be necessary to maintain proper hygiene.” And while silk shouldn’t be tossed into your washing machine with your favorite jeans, you can clean and maintain your silk pillowcase without having to spend a small fortune with your local dry cleaner If you choose to wash your silk pillowcase by hand start by adding some mild detergent to a basin filled with water Place your pillowcase in the water and swish it around gently You want to “agitate” it enough to get clean without being too rough — do not rub or twist do not wring or twist; pat to absorb excess water if need be Lay it on a towel to dry or hang it to air dry While you shouldn’t throw your silk pillowcase in the washer with your regular laundry Just be sure to use a mesh wash bag to keep pulls follow the same directions outlined above for drying silk pillowcases: lay them flat or hang them to air dry Silk pillowcases can keep fine lines in check and frizzy hair at bay but for anyone looking for an answer to their acne and breakouts silver-infused silk pillowcases should top your shortlist Beyond the implications for your skin and hair the choice to make the switch from the usual suspects for pillowcases (cotton bamboo) may ultimately depend on your personal preferences and budget Some of these can hit your bank balance anywhere from $20 to upward of $600 (there are even some in the thousands) For a look at some great options, you can take a look at our guide to the best silk pillowcases The TLDR: Silk pillowcases can be a good investment but it’s important that you manage your expectations A section of Radcliffe Street in Bristol Township will remain open to traffic and will be reduced to one lane as construction continues on a rail line branch initially planned a full closure of the 7900 block of North Radcliffe Street as it reactivates a rail branch crossing the area the plan changed after local residents expressed concerns about limited access due to the ongoing closure of the nearby Randall Avenue bridge Residents worried that the simultaneous closures would leave them with only one exit from their neighborhood and potentially hamper access for emergency services Bristol Township Council President Craig Bowen said the municipality took action last week A letter was sent to Silvi officials and the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission with Tullytown Borough also being informed of the issue an agreement was reached with Silvi Materials to keep one lane open during the construction period according to Township Manager Randee Mazur The single-lane closure could begin as soon as later this week is to restore and utilize tracks previously removed by Amtrak The project is being funded by Silvi and in collaboration with Amtrak and Conrail The rail branch is intended to facilitate the transport of cement powder and reduce truck traffic on local roads Kurtz noted that the reinstated rail line will host about two crossings per Associate professor of physics and biology Ibrahim Cissé professor of biology and Whitehead Institute Director Ruth Lehmann and Andria and Paul Heafy Whitehead Fellow Silvi Rouskin have been awarded 2021 Vilcek Prizes The Vilcek Foundation was established in 2000 by Jan and Marica Vilcek who emigrated from the former Czechoslovakia Their prizes honor the outstanding contributions of immigrants in the sciences and the arts Prizewinners will be honored in an April ceremony “The 2021 awards celebrate the diversity of immigrant contributions to biomedical research and to society,” Vilcek Foundation President Rick Kinsel said in a press release “In recognizing foreign-born scientists and dynamic leaders in the arts and in public service we seek to expand the public dialogue about the intellectual value and artistic diversity that immigration provides the United States.” A faculty member in the departments of Physics and Biology, Ibrahim Cissé received the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Biomedical Science for using super-resolution biological imaging to directly visualize the dynamic nature of gene expression in living cells.  Cissé assumed he would be a lawyer like his father but he soon became inspired by the science he saw in American films so he completed high school two years early enrolled in an English as a Second Language program at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and enrolled in Durham Technical Community College before transferring to North Carolina Central University a historically Black college that was notable for its undergraduate science and mathematics research programs he spent a summer at Princeton University working in condensed matter physics Cissé was confronted by physics professor Paul Chaikin with a question about elliptical geometry and particle density Cissé’s creative problem-solving enabled him and his fellow researchers to develop experiments for observing and quantifying their results and they coauthored a paper that was published in Science magazine he was at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and earned a PhD under the supervision of single-molecule biophysicist Taekjip Ha who was leading research in high-resolution Cissé’s interest in using physics to understand the physical processes in biology led him to a post-doctoral fellowship at École Normale Supérieure Paris forms fleeting (“transient”) clusters with similar molecules in order to transcribe DNA into RNA He joined the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Research Campus as a research specialist in the Transcription Imaging Consortium before joining the MIT Department of Physics in 2014 and was recently granted tenure and a joint appointment in biology The Cissé Laboratory focuses on the development of high-resolution microscopy techniques to examine the behavior of single biomolecules in living cells and his own research focuses on the process by which DNA gets decoded into RNA His Time-Correlated Photoactivated Localization Microscopy (tcPALM) technique of imaging was able to peer inside living cells to study the dynamics of protein clusters This discovery has led to breakthroughs in viewing the clustering and droplet-like behavior of RNA polymerase II during RNA transcription “It’s becoming clearer that physics may be just as important as biology for understanding how cells work.” Other national and international awards include the Young Fluorescence Investigator Award from the American Biophysical Society, the Pew Biomedical Scholars, and the National Institute of Health Director’s New Innovator Award. He is a Next Einstein Forum fellow and was listed in Science News’ Scientists to Watch Professor of biology and director of Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research Ruth Lehmann received the Vilcek Prize in Biomedical Science she investigates the biology of germ cells Lehmann was captivated by science from a young age and majored in biology as an undergraduate at the University of Tübingen Her Fulbright Fellowship in 1977 brought her to the University of Washington in Seattle and served as the catalyst that spurred her career using fruit flies to understand germ cell biology She went on to train with renowned fruit fly geneticists Gerold Schubiger and Jose Campos-Ortega learning classical developmental biology and electron microscopy techniques She then performed her doctoral research with future Nobel laureate Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Genetics Lehmann probed the maternal genes that influence fruit fly embryo development — studies that ignited her fervor for germ cell research as a postdoc at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge she worked with Michael Wilcox and Peter Lawrence to pinpoint the molecules that control the fate of these vital cells where she served as a professor and member of the Whitehead Institute for eight years “Being an immigrant in the United States was exhilarating,” she says “because of the openness to new ideas and the encouragement to take risks and be creative.” She was recruited to the Skirball Institute at New York University (NYU) where she was appointed as the institute’s director as well as the director of the Helen and Martin Kimmel Center for Stem Cell Biology and chair of the Department of Cell Biology at NYU’s Langone Medical Center Lehmann returned to MIT this summer to launch the Lehmann Lab and become director of the Whitehead Institute in July Although she began her career focused on the formation and maintenance of germ cells Lehmann has since revealed key insights into their migration — and more recently into mitochondrial inheritance Her influential work regarding the development and behavior of these essential cells has also enriched related fields including stem cell biology “It means so much to me to be recognized as an immigrant and a researcher,” says Lehmann immigrants don’t feel as welcomed as I did when I came to this country meant to be given a chance to live the dream of being a scientist This allowed me to explore the fascinating biology of the germ line together with a group of incredibly talented trainees and staff and I share this wonderful recognition with them.” Lehmann’s accolades include membership to the National Academy of Sciences and European Molecular Biology Organization as well as the Conklin Medal from the Society for Developmental Biology the Porter Award from the American Society for Cell Biology and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the German Society for Developmental Biology The Andria and Paul Heafy Whitehead Fellow at the Whitehead Institute, Silvi Rouskin received the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Biomedical Science for developing methods to unravel the shapes of RNA molecules inside cells — aiding the potential development of RNA-based therapeutics The daughter of rock musicians in early-1980s communist Bulgaria she grew up fascinated with the geometry of the flora and fauna around her she started saving her lunch money to buy a miniature telescope At 15 she knew that her best chances to study science would be in the United States and so she joined a student exchange program in Idaho “I was not only allowed but encouraged to question my superiors,” she recalls and often debated with my teachers.” Rouskin completed her GED and studied physics and biochemistry at the Florida Institute of Technology at 16 As a staff research associate in the laboratory of Joseph DeRisi at the University of California at San Francisco using microarrays to detect and track viral infection She opted to stay at UCSF to pursue her PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology She joined the Whitehead Institute in 2015, and established the Rouskin Lab to focus on the structure of RNA molecules and to determine how structure influences RNA processing and gene expression in HIV-1 and other viruses Rouskin uncovered the higher-order structure of the RNA genome of SARS-CoV2 — the virus that causes Covid-19  — in infected cells at high resolution “The goal of my own lab has been to perform basic RNA research with clear therapeutic applications and a particular focus on the vulnerabilities of RNA viruses,” says Rouskin “I want my research to matter for medicine and so I always approach my research with a cognizance of how my work can directly benefit people.” Rouskin has also received the Harold M Weintraub Graduate Student Award for outstanding achievements in biological sciences and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund For example, his recent work with actor Chris Hemsworth on Avengers: Infinity War Avengers: Endgame and Men in Black: International took Silvi to England The high-octane actioner starring Hemsworth as Tyler Rake a hard-nosed mercenary hired to rescue a crime lord’s son kidnapped by the Bangladesh mafia Silvi oversaw everything from designing Hemsworth’s badass look to creating the blood and broken body parts left in Rake’s wake during the rescue mission the coronavirus has kept the Italian-born Silvi on lockdown his wife and daughter have been confined to their Rome apartment France designing the makeup for Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel when word came and he traveled back home by car That’s where we caught up with him to talk about Extraction’s makeup challenges “We were so excited to do this job because there was so much action,” says Silvi “We went through liters and liters of blood We shot a sequence on the bridge with fighting and explosions Extraction marks the directing debut of stunt coordinator Sam Hargrave, who worked from a script by Joe Russo Hargrave shot short video guides in advance to map out the action “It was very helpful to watch these films to see the back and forth as Chris goes through the many fighting beats,” continues Silvi where he was going to get hit and where he had to be bruised We saw that we’d have to have some continuity details like dried blood from the previous action sequence.” Silvi particularly cites a twenty-minute segment of nonstop action as an example of Hargrave’s split-second timing “The stunt action in this movie is something that I’ve never seen before.” Silvi’s main responsibility was creating the look for Hemsworth’s stone-cold killer world-weary look to show the toll the years had taken on the former military specialist turned gun for hire “He doesn’t have to look so handsome,” Silvi remembers Hargrave telling him But that proved to be easier said than done “We added dirt and blood and scars and Chris still looked amazing Silvi opted for three scars on Hemsworth’s face — one across his nose and two on the side of his head For a scene that called for Rake to remove his shirt Silvi scattered 25 more scars around his torso “The scars changed him a lot,” observes Silvi “It definitely made him look more rough and tough.” Rake sports an extensive tattoo on his neck that can be seen throughout the movie Silvi estimates 10 or 11 more were added on Hemsworth’s back calling on Rome-based graphic artist Virginia Lorenzetti to collaborate on the drawings and designs Hemsworth also weighed in on the selections “I would show him ideas and he would say which ones he liked and which ones he didn’t adding Hemsworth is often involved in the makeup process It was really fun to create this character with him.” A tattoo on Hemsworth’s chest plays a key role in Rake’s backstory “We tried to find an image that was reminiscent of the character’s son,” continues Silvi “He was a father who lost his son when he was six years old So there’s a tattoo on his chest to remind him.” Tiberio Nardi assisted Silvi with Hemsworth’s makeup which took about an hour each day to apply has known Silvi since they met on a movie set when they were fifteen Silvi’s father was doing makeup and Vannella’s father Following in their respective parent’s footsteps they’ve worked on and off together throughout their careers it’s been more on as Vannella is Hemsworth’s hair guy of choice (He created the iconic Thor locks for all of Hemsworth’s superhero appearances and did Hemsworth’s hair on Blackhat Bad Times at the El Royale and Men in Black: International.) Hemsworth was convinced that Rake’s look pivoted on the hairstyle the actor considered shaving his head completely Vannella ultimately cut it short on the sides and left it long on top so that it would flow down the front of his head “I think that bit of length on top was better,” Silvi adds Vannella was also instrumental in creating the look for the only featured female in the cast Iranian actress Goldshifteh Farahani plays Nik Khan a distaff version of Rake who enlists him to take on the rescue mission “We decided to give her a really smart and beautiful look,” says Silvi Silvi brought in Mad Max: Fury Road Oscar-winner Damian Martin to create the prosthetics For a scene where Rake digs a bullet out of his arm Martin replicated Hemsworth’s upper limb and fitted it with a blood rig “We put Chris in a certain position with the prosthetic arm in his shirt so you can really see him digging in the knife and digging the bullet out,” says Silvi a Bangladesh bad guy played by Suraj Rikame with a scar that ran from the corner of his mouth to the side of his ear Key Dan Lawson Johnston oversaw the complicated makeup for Saju (Randeep Hooda) an adversary who ends up with a broken nose and broken cheekbone after a knockdown fight with Rake “That was a two-hour makeup every day,” explains Silvi Silvi’s favorite gag involved a prosthetic head hit by a bullet at close range (We’ve been sworn to secrecy regarding who takes the hit) “We literally exploded the head,” says Silvi “It was filled with blood and brain material They put a bit of explosive inside and blew it up!” Upping the degree of difficulty was the extreme humidity and temperatures which averaged around 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) during the Thailand shoot Hooda’s prosthetic-heavy makeup was the most difficult to maintain But all the characters needed extra attention to keep their applications from sweating off during filming Silvi is waiting for the quarantine to be lifted Things have taken an optimistic turn in Italy as the rate of daily confirmed cases recedes Silvi has his fingers crossed that the lockdown will ease up by May they’ll be able to resume production on The Last Duel “We shot half the movie and because of the virus we had to go home,” says Silvi about the film that stars Matt Damon “It’s a very important movie for my career Keep up with The Credits for the latest in film
