The public meeting with photographers Jacob and Sara Aue Sobol will conclude the Photography as a Visual Poem workshop that will take place in Sirmione from May 5 to 9
2025 and will offer the public the opportunity to discover the works created by the participants
Organized by Magnum Photos in collaboration with the Municipality of Sirmione
the workshop proposed a path focused on the ability to capture not only people and places
but also human bonds and the poetry of everyday life
The meeting is an excellent opportunity to discover how Sirmione will have inspired the workshop participants: places
stories and visions born from the encounter with the territory will take shape during the public meeting
in a moment of sharing between photography and collective storytelling
Born in Copenhagen in 1976, Jacob Aue Sobol is known for his ability to tell the universality of human emotions
exploring themes such as love and vulnerability
the book Sabine (2004) is inspired by the time spent in Greenland
Tokyo tells the loneliness experienced in the Japanese capital
Sobol has worked on projects in different parts of the world
including Arrivals and Departures along the Trans-Siberian railway and James’ House
Sara Aue Sobol studied photography in Italy and Denmark and has realized photographic projects in Russia and Mexico
He is currently Art Director of Jacob Aue Sobol with whom he lives in Denmark

This famous quote by Elliott Erwitt encapsulates the essence of the exhibition that Sirmione dedicates to one of the great masters of 20th century photography and highlights his extraordinary ability to look at the world and life with great irony and at the same time with unsurpassed depth
After Martin Parr’s iconic beaches in 2024
the city continues its important collaboration with the Magnum Photos agency
presenting the famous exhibition DOGDOGS by Elliott Erwitt
Born in France in 1928 and with a career spanning over 70 years spent traveling the world photographing
Erwitt has captured moments of everyday life and iconic characters with a unique touch and has devoted much attention to exploring the relationship between humans and animals
but at the same time manages to speak to everyone’s heart
through images capable of touching anyone who observes them
“The special and timeless bond between people and their pets is what Elliott Erwitt has been able to immortalize in his images full of humor and lightness
he has revealed a deep understanding of the relationship that we humans share with our animal friends
the extraordinary technical and compositional mastery merges with the distinctive trait of his way of seeing the world.”
With an increasingly rich schedule of courses
Sirmione confirms itself as the Garda home of photography and strengthens its collaboration with Magnum Photos
consolidating its role as a point of reference for the world of photography
“We are very proud of the collaboration with Magnum Photos
a bond that year after year has allowed us to have great names in international photography in Sirmione
our Sirmione home of photography opens its doors to a giant of the 20th century with his amusing and acute images that give us surprising reflections on our daily relationships with animals and on our own lives”
The visit to the exhibition is enriched by the possibility of seeing I Bark at Dogs
a film directed by Douglas Sloan that explores Erwitt’s life and work
alternating moments of comedy and reflection
to provide an intimate portrait of the creative genius behind the camera

Sirmione blooms again and opens up to the world with a new tourist season

The colors of the tulips that dot our peninsula are a tangible sign of this rebirth: an explosion of life that recalls the words of Pope Francis

It is a period of momentum and renewed energy
an opportunity to highlight the many excellences of our territory
Thanks to everyone’s commitment and participation

the ‘Tulipanomania’ project enriches and renews our green areas
giving residents and tourists a fresh and multicolored welcome
which celebrates nature and the care of our territory.”
The Municipality of Sirmione continues its collaboration with Count Giuseppe Inga Sigurtà, owner of the famous Parco Giardino of Valeggio sul Mincio
bringing to our peninsula the excellence and quality of those who have won the prestigious World Tulip Innovation Award 2024
“When I was asked to create a part of Tulipanomania here – said Count Giuseppe Inga Sigurtà – I immediately understood that we could create something beautiful
The administration immediately proved to be very proactive
because as a child my parents often took me here
creating these flowerbeds again was a dream come true
A heartfelt thanks to all the technicians and to those who contributed to the creation of so much beauty and I hope that many tourists can take photos and take home a special memory of this wonderful town”

The Municipal Administration has always been committed to implementing targeted interventions to enhance the territory and to identify solutions that allow improving the livability and usability of spaces for citizens and guests
from 7 April to 13 October 2025 the summer ZTL regulation will be applied
which plans a pedestrianization calendar that is more extensive in terms of dates and time slots than that of 2024
These measures are part of a series of actions aimed at reducing the promiscuity of vehicular and pedestrian transits that make the liveability of the historic center problematic
The regulation of the ZTL 2025 is the result of an in-depth discussion with trade associations (Hoteliers
etc.) and residents in the Historic Center and seeks to balance the different needs of those who need to access the Historic Center
The structure of the ZTL 2025 allows for improved assistance for the first arrival of guests of the accommodation facilities in the historic center thanks to a further strengthening of the services available

is a place I’ve been frequenting for years
so I have eaten in many of its old-town restaurants
next to a stone building covered in bougainvillea
under a canopy of lime trees and fairy lights is Ristorante San Lorenzo
It’s much the same as the other eateries that share the Sirmio Peninsula
I’ve found that most dishes are a euro or two less than at other places
and complimentary glasses of prosecco and limoncello often appear
Ristorante San Lorenzo makes no pretensions
serving you and bringing your check when you ask
the tables sit close enough together that you can chat with strangers
take your order and bring water for your dog in what seems like seconds
Ristorante San Lorenzo doesn’t miss with any of them

The fish was filleted at my table and delivered its usual sweet taste
I had ravioli stuffed with spinach and ricotta after the woman at the table next to me ordered it and liked it
But not as much as the mussels with spaghetti
I asked my favorite server what she recommended
She lobbied for the roasted salmon with a light cream sauce
The dish was so good that I still think of it sometimes and salivate
Those with a sweet tooth can order tiramisu
The most expensive entree is steak Florentine for two at 90 euros
Lapis sapientium (literally: “the stone of the wise” or philosopher’s stone) is the work that the artist Johannes Pfeiffer created specifically for the Casa del Pescatore in Punta Grò
The work is composed of a 14 meter ash trunk
stone and light are the conceptual pairs that Johannes Pfeiffer explores with his sculpture
investigating relationships and opening an imaginary space in which existence and appearance merge
This is how the artist describes his poetics:
Johannes Pfeiffer was born in 1954 in Ulm
After graduating in Economics in 1980 he moved to Italy
He attended the Academies of Fine Arts in Rome and Carrara before dedicating himself to Land Art and environmental installations in 1985
He begins to travel with increasing frequency to carry out art projects in Europe and around the world: Chile

Beaches are places where people can be themselves
revealing their humanity in unique and surprising ways
An authentic and special dimension where you can relax and show off all those slightly eccentric nuances of your personality
along with often extravagant and bizarre behaviors
In the UK you are never more than seventy-five miles from the coast
it is no surprise that there is a strong British tradition of seaside photography
Martin Parr began photographing this subject in the 1970s in the United Kingdom and went on to photograph beaches around the world
offering a unique and surprising look at the customs and seaside rituals of different countries and cultures
“I have photographed the beach for many decades
documenting every single aspect of this tradition
restless swimmers caught in the middle of a dive
and the endless picnic going on on the sand
[…] You can understand a lot about a country by observing its beaches: across cultures
the beach represents that rare public space in which the most extravagant and bizarre national behaviors can be found”
Here on Lake Garda we are particularly experts when it comes to beaches
This special edition of LIFE’S A BEACH shows us Martin Parr at his best
traditions and hilarious absurdities linked to beach life and is enriched by some unpublished photographs of Parr himself taken in Sirmione and on Lake Garda
We thus have the privilege of seeing ourselves portrayed by the unsurpassed irony of the lens of the great British photographer
The exhibition is embellished with a special installation that accompanies the public in a relaxing seaside atmosphere
Martin Parr is one of the best-known documentary photographers of his generation
With over 100 books published and another 30 edited
his photographic legacy is already consolidated
Parr also works as a curator and publisher
He has curated two photography festivals: Arles in 2004 and the Brighton Biennial in 2010
He recently curated the exhibition Strange and Familiar at the Barbican Center in London
Parr has been a member of the Magnum agency since 1994
of which he was president from 2013 to 2017
In 2013 he was appointed visiting professor of photography at Ulster University
Parr’s works have been collected by many of the most important museums
In 2017 he founded the Martin Parr Foundation

From 18 March to 13 October 2024 the summer regulation
The tourist season is upon us and Sirmione is ready to welcome tourists and visitors to enjoy its beauty
The Municipal Administration has always been committed to implementing interventions aimed at enhancing the territory and identifying solutions that allow us to improve the liveability and usability of spaces for citizens and guests
the summer ZTL regulation will be applied from 18 March to 13 October 2024
Numerous pedestrianization days are planned during this period: every Sunday in the months of June
This measure is part of a series of actions aimed at reducing the promiscuity of vehicular and pedestrian transit which makes the liveability of the historic center problematic
assistance is guaranteed for the first arrival of guests of the accommodation facilities in the historic center thanks to the strengthening of the services available
both in terms of transport and parking spaces available at the Grifo Parking
Further details are available on the ZTL REGULATIONS page
it is possible to find a summary of the same by viewing attachment C in the appropriate section
a two-mile promontory projects into the water
At the very end of it lie the ruins of a large Roman villa
The oldest part of the structure dates back to the first century B.C.
but most of the villa was built about 100 years later
and over time it was incorporated into the city walls of Sirmione
Catullus describes his return to a home in Sirmione
which led 14th century scholars to believe that the villa on Lake Garda was the country house of the famous poet
as most of the villa was built after Catullus' death
the place became known as the Grottoes of Catullus
It became a popular destination for scholars and nobles
The complex was renovated in the 20th century and it is now a museum and archaeological site. Some areas in and around the villa have yet to be excavated. It is considered one of the most impressive examples of Roman villas in northern Italy
the villa consisted of two large residential areas with a garden in between
Surrounding the villa are a number of olive groves
the harvest of olives has been used to produce Grotte di Catullo extra virgin olive oil
visitors can get access to the Grotte di Catullo archaeological area with Archaeological Museum of Sirmione
and the Roman villa in Desenzano del Garda.

the agronomist who takes care of the historic olive grove
will go with the public practicing olive gleaning that follows the gathering
It will also be a chance to discover the extraordinary story of the 876 ancient olive trees that cover the peninsula
some of them with at least six centuries of life ahead
The story of the olive trees goes back to the centuries in which the sumptuous roman villa
was used as a pit of building materials for the local population
that place that was a wonderful garden with a lake view became land for orchards and plantations for the families of Sirmione
once the owners had finished their olive gathering
to let anybody glean the left drupes and bring them home
It will happen the same also Saturday 19th November: the agronomist Nicola Castoldi will go with the visitors practicing the gleaning
