Austrian Grand Prix rider Ulrike Prunthaller won on a roll at the 2017 CDI Caselle di Sommacampagna near Verona
Not only did she sweep the small tour with her two Quaterback son
but she also dominated the big tour on her long-time ride Duccio
The 32-year old Prunthaller brought three horses along to Italy
all owned by her loyal sponsors Edda and Wenzel Schmidt of Bartlgut in Austria
Her Prix St Georges horses are the 9-year old German Sport Horse Quarz (by Quaterback x Rubinstern Noir) and the 8-year old German Sport Horse Quantum (by Quaterback x Paradiesvogel)
a 12-year old Austrian warmblood bred stallion by Dimaggio x Coriograf B
Quarz and Quantum got such good scores in Italy," Prunthaller told Eurodressage
Quantum and Quarz were first timers at an international competition and I was interested in which way the judges would like them
In the Prix St Georges Ulrike placed second with Quarz (68.853%) and third with Quantum (68.711%)
In the Intermediaire I she won with Quarz (72.316%) and was second with Quantum (69.737%)
In the Kur to Music she opted to ride Quarz and won the class with 71.700%
"The first day the two were a bit irritated because of the show ground," said Ulrike about her small tour partners
The "Quarterback-youngsters" are extraordinary horses
They learn very quickly with a lot of power in their movement
I'm so thankful to Family Schmidt that I have so beautiful horses."
Ulrike also won the Grand Prix on Duccio with 70.700% and topped the board in the Grand Prix Special with 69.353%
"He is always with me and gives his best."
Prunthaller's next show stop will be the CDI Mariakalnok
followed by the CDI Wiener Neustadt and CDI Hamburg
Ulrike also has hopes for the 2017 European Championships in Gothenburg
"Naturally it's a dream for each rider to compete there
but we have a lot of very good riders here in Austria

two from the 20th century and a drawing from the 16th century enter the collectionA "harvest" of seven works
the latter of which was given to the museum as a gift
This is the balance of the acquisitions that the Uffizi Galleries have done at the Florence International Antiques Biennale
These are the paintings: "Portrait of a Victorious Young Man on Envy" by Pietro Paolini (1630-40)
"Ut pictura poesis," an allegory by Francesco Cairo (1635)
Felice Cerruti Bauduc's self-portrait
"Atelier with the artist painting the Combat of Sommacampagna" (1855)
and "Tragic Journey" by Ferruccio Ferrazzi (1925); we have to add two sculptural works
namely Jean-Baptiste Basset's "Bust in Ivory of Cosimo III de' Medici," signed and dated 1696
and finally the gift by antiquarian Enrico Frascione of the drawing by the 16th-century Venetian painter - and son of Paolo Veronese - Carletto Caliari
"A girl with a dog" preparatory for a painting now in the Louvre in Paris
The acquisition of the seven works during this year's Biennale has already been approved by the Scientific Committee of the Galleries and
by the deputed Commission of the Modern Art Gallery of Palazzo Pitti
Pietro Paolini (Lucca 1603 - 1681)Portrait of a gentleman with a sword
Paolini's painting presents a complex allegorical theme: an elegant knight
with his sword placed on his shoulder and his precious armor resting on the table
holds subdued with his left hand a monstrous female figure with snakes as hair intent on eating her own heart
"a painter of great bizarreness and remarkable invention" (as the 17th cent
historiographer Filippo Baldinucci had called him)
confirms in this work his interest for Caravaggesque light painting
seen and appreciated during his stay in Rome
Francesco Cairo (Milan 1607 - 1663)Ut Pictura Poesis"1635oil on canvas
is a visualization of the Horatian locution "Ut pictura poesis"
depicting the female personifications of Painting and Poetry
leaning against a rock where there is a "toccalapis" (lead rod used for drawing) holds a palette with fresh colors
while the other female figure has a laurel wreath as if to crown the art of painting
and depicts Poetry granting fame to her sister art
with deep shading and intense flashes of light
hark back to Cairo's Neo-Venetian phase
when the painter worked in Turin for the Savoy court
Jean-Baptiste BassetPortrait of Cosimo III de' Medici1696Ivory
The precious small bust of Grand Duke Cosimo III
made by French sculptor Jean-Baptiste Basset in Livorno in 1696
will enrich the ivory collection of the Treasury of the Grand Dukes at the Pitti Palace
the oldest and most valuable prestigious in the world along with those of Dresden and Vienna
will thus be able to flank the courtly ivory medallions with the effigy of the Grand Duke
already on display in the collections of the Pitti Palace
Felice Cerruti Bauduc (Turin 1818 - 1896)Atelier with the artist painting the Combat of Sommacampagna1855 (Signed)oil on canvas
The canvas - destined to be on view in the self-portrait display at the Uffizi - depicts the painter at work on his masterpiece
the enormous “Combattimento di Sommacampagna” (Combat of Sommacampagna
We see a glimpse into the painter's atelier specializing in military scenes of homeland history
with a real horse posing and a puppet dressed as a soldier
testifying to the workshop practices of the artist
that was one of the great protagonists of the Risorgimento
Ferruccio Ferrazzi (Rome 1891 - 1978)Tragic Journey1924-1925oil on canvas
this masterpiece interprets with a modern sensibility the great tradition of the masters of 15th- and 16th-century Italy
at the prestigious Exhibition of Modern Italian Art where it was purchased by Carl W
a noted collector of Italian Renaissance art
who appreciated the solemn neo-Fourteenth-century synthesis of the composition and perhaps the references to the iridescent colors of Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino's painting
Ferrazzi here evokes the memory of a personal experience
the journey by ship he made in November 1917 to Sardinia
The autobiographical episode is transfigured
by a personal style where the characters - including the artist's mother
sister and wife – are set within abstract geometric spaces aiming to convey
"reality reflected in my lyrical memory."

made by lost wax at the Maf Foundry in Milan
is a variant of one of the bronze four Stations of the Cross executed by Manzù for the Roman church of Sant'Eugenio
In a humanistic renewal of Catholic culture
Manzù departed from the liturgical and doctrinal tradition to draw on Donatello's great sculpture
This work coincides with Manzù's public consecration

This drawing comes from the workshop of Paolo Veronese
Carletto assumed a more important role in the management of the family business
after having worked for some years in the Bassano's workshop

age-worthy red and white wines comparable to Bourgogne
Nothing beats a complex Bourgogne blanc… like a Lugana Riserva white wine from Italy’s Lake Garda
easy-drinking light wines made from the local Trebbiano di Lugana (also known as Turbiana) grape
Lugana also offers a newer style – Lugana Riserva
layered texture resembles a Bourgogne blanc
“Lugana is a sort of red wine dressed in white, because it continues to improve and evolve during its lifetime,” says Angelo Peretti, author and director of Consorzio di Tutela Chiaretto e Bardolino
Peretti credits acid-driven Turbiana grapes and distinctive regional clay soils for Lugana Riserva’s distinctive ageing capacity and minerality
This ancient wine region on the southern end of Lake Garda introduced its Lugana Riserva programme in 2011. “The first bottle of Lugana Riserva Sergio Zenato was released in 1993, but only a few years ago, the term “Riserva” was included in the DOC’s discipline, starting with the 2011 vintage,” explains Nadia Zenato, daughter of Sergio Zenato, founder of Zenato Azienda Vitivinicola
“My father saw the potential of the local indigenous white grape variety Trebbiano di Lugana, when no one else believed in it.”
Few wineries currently make the time-intensive reserve wine. “We are pretty convinced of the potential of longevity of the Turbiana grapes” says Fabio Zenato of Le Morette
“Thanks to our family expertise in vine nursery and clonal selections on Turbiana.”
Lugana Riserva white wines offer Bourgogne-like complexity and ageability
“Lugana is one of those wines showing that Italian whites can age well, offering a multi-faceted personality – and great sips – as time unfolds: crunchy and mineral when the wine is young, complex – with tertiary aromas such as petrol and kerosene, as it ages,” says Irene Graziotto, certified sommelier, wine writer and international press office manager at Studio Cru.“I like it for its versatility
and for the fact that if I forget a bottle in the cellar

Nothing beats an elegant Bourgogne rouge… like a Bardolino cru

As Michaela Morris so deftly explained last year
Bardolino has undergone important changes in the last few years
In an effort to not be left behind by competitors – not just in Veneto
but elsewhere around the world – the Consorzio has worked with producers to update the style of the rosé wines (known as Chiaretto) and implement three historical crus for the reds
The red Bardolino DOC has assumed three crus based on historical subzones
Montebaldo and Sommacampagna were originally identified at the end of the 19th century
it is only very recently that these have become officially recognised
these crus are subject to lower yields with longer maturation and must be approved in a blind tasting by a panel of judges
after several years of behind-the-scenes work between the Consorzio and consultant Angelo Peretti
the Chiaretto rosés of Bardolino began transitioning from the traditional dark pink style – a by-product of red wine production where a portion of juice was run off to increase the skin/must ratio – to much paler
This is more than just a change in aesthetic: Chiaretto is a separate DOC as of the 2018 vintage
and the quality of the wine clearly benefits from grapes being grown
harvested and fermented with Chiaretto in mind
The reduction in skin contact helps to bring more elegance and aromatics
and the result is a new style that – whether producers like it or not – can be compared with those from Provence
this cru is situated in the southeast part of Bardolino
It is the warmest of the three subzones and also the wettest
this cru lies on the eastern shores of Lake Garda
The soils here are fine and the terrain is hilly
this cru lies at the northeast of the Bardolino area
vineyards are on average at higher altitudes here.
