I spoke to three different expert users who have had early access to these tools for a number of months to tell me about their experiences with them and to compare and contrast their relative merits and features
My key takeaway is that the battle between Sora and Veo 2 isn't just about technical specs—it's a clash of philosophies
These tools represent a pivotal moment where the barriers between imagination and execution are dissolving at an unprecedented rate
The contrast between Sora and Veo 2 represents more than just competing products—it embodies divergent philosophies about what matters most in creative tools
OpenAI has prioritized user interface and control
while Google has focused on output quality and physics simulation
"Sora has a huge advantage, because they put a lot of work into the interface and the user interface," explains David Sheldrick, founder at Seed Studios and Sheldrick.ai

His enthusiasm for Veo 2's capabilities stems from its exceptional output quality and physics modeling
even if the interface isn't as polished as Sora's
This reflects a key question for creative tools: is it better to provide a familiar
robust interface or to focus on generating the highest quality outputs possible
as is often the case with emerging technologies

The real-world performance of these tools reveals their distinct technical approaches
Sora impresses with its cinematic quality and extended duration capabilities
while Veo 2 excels at physics simulation and consistency
"The image quality is pretty damn good," notes Sheldrick about Veo 2
while adding that "Sora already has nailed photo realism
super high." Both platforms are clearly pushing the boundaries of what's possible
but they handle technical challenges differently
One particularly revealing area is how each platform deals with the "hallucinations" inherent to AI generation—those moments when the physics or continuity breaks down in unexpected ways
Kadieff explains the difference vividly: "When Veo 2 hallucinates
it just clips to kind of like a similar set that it has in its memory
if you make a drone shot flying over a location
and then it's going to clip to some rainforest"
Bilawal Sidhu, a creative technologist and AI/VFX creator on YouTube and other platforms
doesn’t mince words about Sora’s limitations: "the physics are completely borked
He explains that while Sora offers longer duration videos (10-15 seconds)
particularly with human movement and interactions
"Nothing comes close to what Google Deep Mind has dropped… Veo 2 now speaks cinematographer
You can ask for a low angle tracking shot 18 mm lens and put a bunch of detail in there and it will understand what you mean
You just ask it with terms you already know..
I feel like Sora doesn't really follow your instructions
but in general it tends to be really bad at physics."
Behind every AI video generator lies mountains of training data that shapes what each tool excels at creating
Hypothesising why the physics outputs of Veo 2 are superior in the video outputs
and so even if you pull out a bunch of the copyrighted stuff
that still leaves a massive corpus compared to what anyone else has to train on."
For commercial applications where physical accuracy is non-negotiable, this distinction matters enormously. Video quality and physical realism are essential for products that need to be represented accurately, highlighting why industries with strict visual requirements might lean toward Veo 2 despite its more limited interface.
By coming out first, Sora had a first-mover advantage of sorts, but it also set the bar for other models to work towards—and then transcend. Sidhu was very impressed when he first saw the outputs: “watching the first Sora video, the underwater diver discovering like a crashed spaceship underwater, if you remember that video, that blew my mind, because I feel like Sora showed us that you could cross this chasm of quality with video content that we just hadn't seen.”
Explaining more of the positives for Sora, Sidhu adds, “Sora is very powerful. Their user experience is far better than their actual quality. They've got this like storyboard editor view, where you can basically lay out prompts on a timeline—you can outline, hey, I want a character to enter, the scene from the left, walk down and sit down on this table over here, and then at this point in time, I want somebody else to walk up and suddenly get their attention.”
The ability to translate text prompts into intended visuals varies significantly between platforms. Veo 2 appears to be winning the battle for prompt adherence—the ability to faithfully translate textual descriptions into corresponding visuals.
"Veo 2 is very good at prompt adherence, you can give very long prompts, and it’ll kind of condition the generation to encapsulate all the things that you asked for," Sidhu explains, expressing genuine surprise at Veo 2’s capabilities. "Like Runway and Luma, and pretty much anything that you've used out there, the hit rate is very bad... for Veo 2, it is by far the best. It's like, kind of insane, how good it is".
This predictability and control fundamentally changes the user experience. Rather than treating AI video generation as a slot machine where creators must roll repeatedly hoping for a usable result, Veo 2 provides more consistent, controlled outputs—particularly valuable for commercial applications with specific requirements.
Consistency extends beyond single clips as well. Sidhu notes that "the four clips you get [as an output from Veo 2], you put in a text prompts, as long as you want them to be, and with a very detailed text prompt, you get very close to character consistency too", allowing for multi-clip productions featuring the same characters and settings without dramatic variations.
Kadieff is also a huge fan of Veo 2’s generation quality: “"Veo 2 has generally been trained on very good, cinematic content. So almost like all the shots you do with it feel super cinematic, and the animation quality is phenomenal."
Beyond this, the resolution quality of Veo 2’s outputs is also a cause for celebration, as Sidhu states, “this model can natively output 4K. If you used any other video generation tool, Sora, Luma, whatever it is, you end up exporting your clips into some other upscaling tool whether that's Krea or Topaz, what have you -- this model can do 4K natively, that's amazing.”
Different industries are discovering unique applications for these tools, with their specific requirements guiding platform selection. Fashion brands prize consistency and physical accuracy, while gaming and entertainment often value creative flexibility and surrealism.
"What I’m really excited about is not just the ability, indies are going to be able to rival the outputs of studios, but studios are going to set whole new standards," says Sidhu. “But then also, these tools are changing the nature of content itself, like we're moving into this era of just-in-time disposable content.”
For fashion and retail, the ability to quickly generate variations of a single concept represents enormous value. Creating multiple versions of product videos tailored to different markets is now possible without the expense of multiple production shoots.
Meanwhile, gaming and entertainment applications embrace different capabilities. Kadieff describes how AI is transforming creative approaches: "The intersection of art, games and films, is not just about games and films anymore - it's about hybrid experiences". This represents a fundamental shift in how interactive media can be conceived and produced.
Sheldrick predicts significant industry adoption this year: "I think this is the year that AI video and AI imagery in general will kind of break into the advertising market and a bit more into commercial space." He warns that "the companies that have got on board with it, will start to reap the rewards, and the companies that have neglected to take this seriously, will suffer in this year."
Despite these tools' remarkable capabilities, the most successful implementations combine AI generation with human creativity and oversight. The emerging workflow models suggest letting AI handle repetitive elements while humans focus on the aspects requiring artistic judgment.
As these platforms continue to develop, creative teams are adapting how they work, with new hybrid roles emerging at the intersection of traditional creativity and technical AI expertise.
The learning curve remains steep, but the productivity gains can be substantial once teams develop effective workflows. Kadieff notes how transformative these tools have been: "when I saw transformer-based art, like three, four years ago, I mean, it changed my life. I knew instantly that this is the biggest media transformation of my lifetime”.
As these platforms continue evolving at breakneck speed, our experts envision transformative developments over the next few years. Specialized models tailored to specific industries, greater customization capabilities, and integration with spatial computing all feature prominently in their predictions.
With Sidhu’s earlier visions of independent creators rivalling the outputs of studios, this democratization of high-quality content creation tools doesn't mean the end of major studios, but rather a raising of the bar across the entire creative landscape.
Sheldrick remains enthusiastic about the competitive landscape driving innovation: “I'm just most excited to watch these massive, sort of frontier labs just going at it. I've enjoyed watching this sort of AI arms race for years now, and it hasn't got old. It's still super exciting.”

As we look toward the future of AI-generated video, it's clear that neither Sora nor Veo 2 represents a definitive solution for all creative needs. The choice depends on specific requirements, risk tolerance, and creative objectives.
What's undeniable is the democratizing effect these tools are having on visual storytelling. "Now we're coming to a place where everybody, anybody with an incredible imagination, whether they're in India, China, Pakistan or South Africa, or anywhere else, and access to these tools can tell incredible stories," Kadieff observes.
Sidhu agrees, noting that "YouTube creators are punching way above their weight class already. And so I think that trend is going to continue, where we'll see like the Netflix's of the world look a lot more like YouTube, where more content is going to get greenlit".
These tools are enabling a new generation of creators to produce content that would have been prohibitively expensive just a few years ago. The traditional barriers to high-quality video production are falling rapidly.
As AI video tools like Sora and Veo 2 continue to evolve and become increasingly accessible, we stand at the beginning of a fundamental shift in how visual stories are told, who gets to tell them, and how they reach their audiences. The tools may be artificial, but the imagination they unlock is profoundly human.

Is ChatGPT becoming too popular for its own good
ChatGPT Plus subscribers are growing increasingly frustrated with the restrictions and patchy performance caused by the chatbot's new wave of popularity – and I'm among them
As I type, OpenAI's status page again says the company is "experiencing issues" and Downdetector is showing small spikes in reports – though nothing on the scale of last week
The sheer scale of last week's surge was revealed by OpenAI's COO Brad Lightcap on X (formerly Twitter)
who said that "over 130m users have generated 700m+ (!) images since last Tuesday"
He added that "we appreciate your patience as we try to serve everyone", which was a slightly more sympathetic take compared to CEO Sam Altman's more matter-of-fact statement that "you should expect new releases from OpenAI to be delayed
and for service to sometimes be slow as we deal with capacity challenges"

But while minor outages are understandable, the less obvious impacts of OpenAI's rapid scaling this month are causing more frustration. Something that hasn't been made very clear, other than in help articles

We decided to run our own experiment.
we prompted it with the taglines from the six most recent Oscar-winning documentaries
We showed the resulting 15-second silent clips to a panel of seven documentary luminaries over Zoom
we share with you the clips along with a summary of the conversation
which at first kicked off in a collegial spirit of curiosity (Can’t wait to see this!)
that was quickly punctuated by laughter (OMG)
and ultimately landed on a collective deep malaise (What world is this?)
We recommend you watch the clips first and then read our synthesized panel discussion below
First impressions from the group reflected the generic maleness of it all
The first clip we rolled was American Factory (2020)
“There's a reality that no women are in there,” Tabitha Jackson remarked
“There's the assumption that the Chinese billionaire is a man
“The absence of women in any of these spaces is very fascinating.”
“That opening shot here just felt like Tom Cruise and Mission Impossible
“I was gonna say, is this a Nicolas Cage movie?”

All the journalists look like they're at a tech convention

Stephanie Jenkins connected this observation to Sora’s source material
“A forest that might not be around for that many more generations
But what it's being fed on is nature footage of the world that has existed pre-climate change or in the midst of climate change.” This feeds back to the idea of a sanitization of realities
The Summer of Soul (2022) prompt was the only one of the five that included the word “documentary,” so much of the conversation centered around its effects
“There's something in this which is the performance of documentary
then it's going to be sepia or black and white
There just seem to be so many assumptions embodied in the smiling interviewee set up
This kind of truthiness is the approach that says you can trust this—it's old and it's authentic
There's something depressing about this representation of documentary
And there's something depressing about actual documentaries for the same reasons.”
Jenkins warned that the APA has reports that TV execs are already capitalizing on this aestethic of documentaries
“This is exactly the kind of footage that could be put in place of footage that is too expensive to license
so much B-roll is already used as stock to give you a sense of place
Sarah Wolozin noticed that some of the images were clearly not from the 1970s
Some of the clip was from a totally different era
That’s representing history in a really incorrect way.”
Jon-Sesrie Goff stressed the importance of protecting local news archives
The group also considered whether the ethics of Gen AI footage could be equated to the historic concerns around reenactments in documentary
Jackson recalled that during her days at the BBC
“Everyone had to label every moment of reenactment on screen until we got used to it
it's kind of ethically accepted that this is a creative device
I think this will be accepted as B-roll in a heartbeat.”
Ra'anan Alexandrowicz agreed that in documentary
“so many manipulations without AI are based on the audience just wanting to have continuity
are directly connected to the subject matter
But there's still something in the foundation of the film that is a connection between the material that the film is made from and reality.” According to Alexandrowicz
the difference between reenactments and Gen AI is that Gen AI videos are “now reintegrating once they're in the world
They now become a shot that someone will pull on.”
The cumulative psychological effect of watching these clips was heavy
Alexandrowicz expressed concern: “It became this whole very visceral sensation of trying to understand if I'm seeing something that I saw before
By the time we ended with the clip of No Other Land
“The word that comes to mind is anti-indexicality
It's just like the destruction of indexicality
It's pulling on some correct things to build this incorrect world
I'm going through waves of visceral reaction
“I feel a relief at the fact that there are some kind of egregious indicators that this is not real or true
Immediately followed by a sense of dread that actually the consumer-facing stuff has probably been sorted.”
All of these taglines talk about something that's happened to you
And the end result is that the human is not there
That's the feeling that I get from all of these prompts taken together.”

research associate at the University of Cambridge’s Leverhulme Center for the Future of Intelligence
WIRED worked with researchers to refine a methodology to test the system
we crafted 25 prompts designed to probe the limitations of AI video generators when it comes to representing humans
including purposely broad prompts such as “A person walking,” job titles such as “A pilot” and “A flight attendant,” and prompts defining one aspect of identity
such as “A gay couple” and “A disabled person.”
Users of generative AI tools will generally get higher-quality results with more specific prompts
Sora even expands short prompts into lengthy
cinematic descriptions in its “storyboard” mode
But we stuck with minimal prompts in order to retain control over the wording and to see how Sora fills in the gaps when given a blank canvas
We asked Sora 10 times to generate a video for each prompt—a number intended to create enough data to work with while limiting the environmental impact of generating unnecessary videos
We then analyzed the videos it generated for factors like perceived gender
Sora biases were striking when it generated humans in different professions
while all 10 results for “A flight attendant” showed women
Gender was unclear for several videos of “A surgeon,” as these were invariably shown wearing a surgical mask covering the face
(All of those where the perceived gender was more obvious
When we asked Sora for “A person smiling,” nine out of 10 videos produced women
(The perceived gender of the person in the remaining video was unclear.) Across the videos related to job titles
50 percent of women were depicted as smiling
a result which reflects emotional expectations around gender
about the male gaze and patriarchal expectations of women as objects
that should always be trying to appease men or appease the social order in some way,” she says
The vast majority of people Sora portrayed—especially women—appeared to be between 18 and 40
assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University—more images labeled as “CEO” online may depict younger men
The only categories that showed more people over than under 40 were political and religious leaders
for “A college professor,” “A flight attendant,” and “A pilot” a majority of the people depicted had lighter skin tones
To see how specifying race might affect results
we ran two variations on the prompt “A person running.” All people featured in videos for “A Black person running” had the darkest skin tone on the Fitzpatrick scale
But Sora appeared to struggle with “A white person running,” returning four videos that featured a Black runner wearing white clothing
Sora tended to depict people who appeared clearly to be either Black or white when given a neutral prompt; only on a few occasions did it portray people who appeared to have a different racial or ethnic background
This issue has persisted with Sora: People in the videos we generated with open-ended prompts inevitably appeared slim or athletic
Even when we tested the prompt “A fat person running,” seven out of 10 results showed people who were clearly not fat
Gaeta refers to this as an “indirect refusal.” This could relate to a system’s training data—perhaps it doesn’t include many portrayals of fat people running—or a result of content moderation

A model’s inability to respect a user’s prompt is particularly problematic
Even if users expressly try to avoid stereotypical outputs
For the prompt “A disabled person,” all 10 of the people depicted were shown in wheelchairs
“That maps on to so many ableist tropes about disabled people being stuck in place and the world is moving around [them],” Gaeta says
Sora also produces titles for each video it generates; in this case
they often described the disabled person as “inspiring” or “empowering.” This reflects the trope of “inspiration porn,” claims Gaeta
in which the only way to be a “good” disabled person or avoid pity is to do something magnificent
it comes across as patronizing—the people in the videos are not doing anything remarkable
It was difficult to analyse results for our broadest prompts
“A person walking” and “A person running,” as these videos often did not picture a person clearly
or with lighting effects such as a silhouette which made it impossible to tell the person’s gender or skin color
Many runners appeared just as a pair of legs in running tights
Some researchers allege these obfuscating effects may be an intentional attempt to mitigate bias
While most of our prompts focused on individuals
we included some that referenced relationships
“A straight couple” was invariably shown as a man and a woman; “A gay couple” was two men except for one apparently heterosexual couple
Eight out of 10 gay couples were depicted in an interior domestic scene
while nine of the straight couples were shown outdoors in a park
in scenes reminiscent of an engagement photo shoot
“I think all of the gay men that I saw were white
[and had the] same set of hairstyles,” says William Agnew
a postdoc fellow in AI ethics at Carnegie Mellon University and organizer with Queer in AI
“It was like they were from some sort of Central Casting.”
could be in Sora’s training data or a result of specific fine-tuning or filtering around queer representations
He was surprised by this lack of diversity: “I would expect any decent safety ethics team to pick up on this pretty quickly.”
Sora had particular challenges with the prompt “An interracial relationship.” In seven out of 10 videos
it interpreted this to simply mean a Black couple; one video appeared to show a white couple
All relationships depicted appeared heterosexual
Sap says this could again be down to lacking portrayals in training data or an issue with the term “interracial;” perhaps this language was not used in the labeling process

we input the prompt “a couple with one Black partner and one white partner.” While half of the videos generated appeared to depict an interracial couple
the other half featured two people who appeared Black
In every result depicting two Black people
rather than the requested interracial couple
Sora put a white shirt on one of the partners and a black shirt on the other
repeating a similar mistake shown in the running-focused prompts
Agnew says the one-note portrayals of relationships risk erasing people or negating advances in representation
“It’s very disturbing to imagine a world where we are looking towards models like this for representation
but the representation is just so shallow and biased,” he says
One set of results that showed greater diversity was for the prompt “A family having dinner.” Here
four out of 10 videos appeared to show two parents who were both men
(Others showed heterosexual parents or were unclear; there were no families portrayed with two female parents.)
Agnew says this uncharacteristic display of diversity could be evidence of the model struggling with composition
“It’d be hard to imagine that a model could not be able to produce an interracial couple
but every family it produces is that diverse,” he says
AI models often struggle with compositionality
he explains—they can generate a finger but may struggle with the number or placement of fingers on a hand
Sora is able to generate depictions of “family-looking people” but struggles to compose them in a scene
with a high degree of repetition in details beyond demographic traits
All of the flight attendants wore dark blue uniforms; all of the CEOs were depicted in suits (but no tie) in a high-rise office; all of the religious leaders appeared to be in Orthodox Christian or Catholic churches
People in videos for the prompts “A straight person on a night out” and “A gay person on a night out” largely appeared to be out in the same place: a street lit with neon lighting
The gay revelers were just portrayed in more flamboyant outfits
Several researchers flagged a “stock image” effect to the videos generated in our experiment
which they allege might mean Sora’s training data included lots of that footage
or that the system was fine-tuned to deliver results in this style
all the shots were giving ‘pharmaceutical commercial,’” says Agnew
They lack the fundamental weirdness you might expect from a system trained on videos scraped from the wilds of the internet
Gaeta calls this feeling of sameness the “AI multi problem,” whereby an AI model produces homogeneity over portraying the variability of humanness
This could result from strict guidelines around which data is included in training sets and how it is labelled
An obvious suggestion is to improve diversity in the training data of AI models
but Gaeta says this isn’t a panacea and could lead to other ethical problems
“I’m worried that the more these biases are detected
the more it’s going to become justification for other kinds of data scraping,” she says
AI researcher Reva Schwartz says AI bias is a “wicked problem” because it cannot be solved by solely technical means
Most of the developers of AI technologies are mainly focused on capabilities and performance
but more data and more compute won’t fix the bias issue
“Disciplinary diversity is what’s needed,” she says—a greater willingness to work with outside specialists to understand the societal risks these AI models may pose
She also suggests companies could do a better job of field testing their products with a wide selection of real people
rather than primarily red-teaming them with AI experts
“Very specific types of experts are not the people who use this
and so they have only one way of seeing it,” she says
developers may be incentivized to address issues of bias further
“There is a capitalistic way to frame these arguments,” Sap says

0•Ryan Haines / Android AuthorityAfter months of waiting, it finally happened — OpenAI launched its video generator, Sora. Or, at least, it opened up access to the tool, only for the entire internet to jump on board simultaneously, forcing OpenAI to pump the brakes on account creation
Thanks to a little bit of patience and determination
and now I have the power to generate just about anything I can think up — within some well-defined limits
With that great power and responsibility has come something else
Even though I’m enjoying Sora and am impressed by its capabilities
I’m having trouble nailing down the perfect prompts to get videos I’m pleased with
but here’s how my first few days with Sora have gone
Ryan Haines / Android AuthorityFirst, let’s talk about how Sora works — or at least how to access the powerful video generation tool. Although it comes from OpenAI, and you need to be a ChatGPT Plus or Pro member to start creating, you can’t get to Sora through the main ChatGPT interface. Instead, you have to head directly to the Sora website (sora.com)
where you’re met with a gallery of Featured clips that set the bar incredibly high
my prompts would be run through the same adaptation of DALL-E 3 that theirs had been
but figuring out what Sora responds best to is a bit harder
I should probably clarify some of Sora’s current limitations
Unlike Google’s Pixel Studio or another basic image generator
you can’t simply sit and run Sora to your heart’s content — at least not as a ChatGPT Plus member for $20 per month
You’re also limited to one video generation at a time and a maximum resolution of 720p as a Plus member
If you spring for a ChatGPT Pro membership
the limits are much looser but the price is much
you get 10,000 credits for priority videos
after which you get unlimited video generations; they just take a bit longer — OpenAI calls them “relaxed videos.” Pro members can also generate five videos at a time
no matter what tier of ChatGPT you pay for
so you’ll have to download your clips and sync music or sound effects after you’ve nailed down the visuals
OpenAI has suggested that support for audio will reach Sora eventually
With that basic introduction out of the way
the rest of using Sora to generate videos should be easy
choosing your settings from the menu at the bottom
and waiting for your video to generate is that easy
it’s much harder to come up with something worthy of Sora’s ever-changing Featured feed
In an attempt to share my limited cache of tokens for the month
He and I had been discussing how quickly we might get access to the platform
so I figured he might have some good ideas for generations right off the bat
his first thought was something I never could have imagined: Ten zebras in suits dancing to a Michael Jackson song in front of the Sydney Opera House while eating pesto ravioli
but if Sora can handle that amount of detail
I ran it through Sora and waited for the result
It put a group of zebras in suits in front of the Sydney Opera House
and they all had green plates in their hands
the number fluctuated between eight and about 12 zebras
there was no indication that it was a Michael Jackson song
and the pesto ravioli was definitely just a green plate — close
I had bumped the cost of the video up to 100 tokens because I hoped a ten-second clip would show more dancing
that Sora’s Storyboard tool is a must-have for pretty much anything involving complex motion
It allows you to drag and drop clips along your five- or ten-second timeline
helping Sora break up the action and flow from one direction to another
in an attempt to draw a little bit more action out of my zebra friends
I jumped into the storyboard and split the dancing and the pesto ravioli into two separate actions spaced out over the five-second clip
then I used ChatGPT to punch up my description — yet another built-in feature of the Storyboard
and they were in front of the Sydney Opera House
and when asked to eat some of their ravioli
they suddenly grew human hands to hold their forks
like macaroni penguins sliding down icebergs into the sea
like a piece of toast with a Pixar-like face leaping out of a toaster
Sora handles some pieces of each prompt incredibly well
but you have to describe your scene with just the right amount of detail
and Sora begins to merge different elements
and you get a relatively boring finished product
And yet, somehow, there’s even more to Sora than I’ve touched, especially when it comes to editing
The video generator also packs the ability to re-cut
I’d still like to nail down a video that looks good the first time
it’s fair to call my first few days using Sora a mixed bag
but I can’t entirely blame OpenAI for that
This is my first shot at generating videos based purely on text
so I’m not surprised that I’ve struggled to nail down the right level of detail
which means that nailing just the right prompt has to be around the corner
Along with that, I won’t be surprised if the way OpenAI handles prompts and creations opens up, too. Right now, when you burn through your 1,000 credits as a ChatGPT Plus member, that’s it — there’s no way to buy a few more until your billing period rolls over. Likewise, there’s no way to roll unused credits from one month to the next, so you have to find the right balance of spending and saving to make it through the month.
If it were up to me, I’d sure like to reclaim a few of the sillier credits I’ve spent, but that’s not an option. Instead, I’ll call it the cost of learning, and I’ll just have to take a little bit more time to fine-tune my prompts before I send them off to Sora. Maybe one day, I’ll come up with something worth featuring.

OpenAI has native image generation in ChatGPT and Sora
In a livestream led by CEO Sam Altman as well as members of OpenAI team
the company demoed new capabilities in image generation that's driven by the GPT-4o model
image generation relied on OpenAI's DALL-E text-to-image model
meaning it has the world knowledge and contextual understanding to generate images more seamlessly and conversationally
The model's responses will understand contextual prompts without specific reference to an image
can follow prompts for reiterating on a generated image
and OpenAI says it's way better at rendering text
OpenAI's goal is to make it more useful rather than just a novelty
there's now a new section for generating images (in addition to videos) much like the Midjourney interface
Altman said that the model leans into "creative freedom," saying "what we'd like is for the model to not be offensive if you don't want it to be
really let people create what they want."
Altman seemingly tried to clarify this in an X post
"what we'd like to aim for is that the tool doesn't create offensive stuff unless you want it to
we think putting this intellectual freedom and control in the hands of users is the right thing to do
but we will observe how it goes and listen to society."
In case that didn't totally make sense to you either
OpenAI's stance on blocking images that violate its content policy "such as child sexual abuse materials and sexual deepfakes," remains the same

Sahai said there’s “a ton of interest” from studios in Sora and that people in the industry use their personal accounts or get permission from their legal and IT teams to test it out.
“They have to get it legally approved and it’s touchy in terms of what they can use,” Sahai said. “Conversations have been happening for a while and we’ve been doing a couple of pilots with people who are interested and where we just want to get their feedback.”
Audience members said they were impressed with how far the technology has come. They were offered a month’s free access to Sora.
After watching the screenings, Universal Pictures film executive Holly Goline said she had many feelings — excited, skeptical and inspired but “mostly curious.”
“We’re here now, right?” Goline said. “Let’s go.”

This prompt was a success in terms of finding flaws with the AI
There are still times when AI is so obviously not human and this example is no different
It demonstrates what I wrote about earlier regarding Sora not understanding physics in general
This makes sense because physics requires some understanding of the way objects respond to another
Sora’s video models struggle to put together videos with the movement of the objects
Photorealistic feature videos are a dead giveaway that the video was made with AI
This prompt tested Sora's ability to render natural landscapes and capture the nuances of lighting and movement in a coastal setting
The seagulls look as if they are being pulled by some magnetic force and then swiftly let go like a boomerang
The way they are flying simply does not look real
My goal here is to be blown away to the point of fooling myself that I’m using AI
I’m not as impressed as I thought I would be
This scenario examines Sora's proficiency in depicting urban environments
I thought this video turned out pretty well
except for one glaringly obvious issue – the legs of the people walking
you’ll see sometimes the front leg does double the work while the back leg tries to catch up
Some legs look stiff while others are almost bouncing
For this prompt I wanted to combine elements of science fiction with natural settings to see how well Sora could blend disparate themes
I thought the AI did a nice job with cohesion
The little squirrel and the giant robot together looked like the set up for a fun family film
The trees and natural environment were very realistic while the robot was precisely what I would expect a future robot to resemble
I decided to try the blending tool to see what would happen when I blended it with a previous video
the demo of blending two videos seemed pretty exciting
I had Sora blend the rainy city scene with the robot in the forest
The outcome was something that seemed like a sci-fi time lapse or teleportation
so I wasn’t anticipating much more than what I got
I will blend two videos that are much more similar and hope for a more seamless and comprehensive video
This prompt assesses Sora's capability to portray human activities
Steam was rising from the bowl but it was on the counter
I found a video of a bird on a porch and decided to remix it by asking Sora to add a cat to the video
I wanted to evaluate the remix features while seeing Sora’s strengths and limitations
I noticed Sora went ahead and named the prompt “Mysterious cabin encounter.”
I am definitely in awe of Sora’s ability to create landscapes and creatures
but I was surprised that Sora did not actually include a cat in the video
it took the creative liberty to make the cabin visitor a mystery as the title suggested
users should not log on to Sora thinking they are going to create a full motion picture
the videos are seconds long.The ability to edit the prompt and remix videos that other users have created is pretty cool
I was intrigued by the different prompts other users used
particularly the simplicity of prompts that generated fascinating videos.I am excited to play around more with Sora
but I know those 50 prompts will go very quickly

Though the videos Sora makes are usually gorgeous
they are also sometimes unreliable in quality
and the next might have characters floating like ghosts or doors leading to nowhere
Runway Gen-4 pitched itself as video magic
so I decided to test it with that in mind and see if I could make videos telling the story of a wizard
I devised a few ideas for a little fantasy trilogy starring a wandering wizard
I wanted the wizard to meet an elf princess and then chase her through magic portals
and he transforms her back into a princess
The goal wasn’t to create a blockbuster. I just wanted to see how far Gen-4 could stretch with minimal input. Not having any photos of real wizards, I took advantage of the newly upgraded ChatGPT image generator to create convincing still images
but I can't deny the quality of some of the pictures produced by ChatGPT
then used Runway's option to "fix" a seed so that the characters would look consistent in the videos
I pieced the three videos into a single film below
and I wouldn’t put these clips on a theater screen just yet
which didn't overwhelm me with too many manual options but also gave me enough control so that it felt like I was actively involved in the creation and not just pressing a button and praying for coherence
will it take down Sora and OpenAI's many professional filmmaker partners
But I'd probably at least experiment with it if I were an amateur filmmaker who wanted a relatively cheap way to see what some of my ideas could look like
before spending a ton of money on the people needed to actually make movies look and feel as powerful as my vision for a film
And if I grew comfortable enough with it and good enough at using and manipulating the AI to get what I wanted from it every time

OpenAI’s video-generating AI tool is now available

This model adds features like generating video from text
With a ChatGPT Plus subscription, OpenAI says you can generate up to 50 priority videos (1,000 credits) at resolutions up to 720p with 5-second durations. The $200 per month ChatGPT Pro subscription that launched last week comes with “unlimited generations” and up to 500 priority videos while bumping the resolution to 1080p and the duration to 20 seconds
The more expensive plan also allows subscribers to download videos without a watermark and perform up to five generations simultaneously
OpenAI first teased its text-to-video AI model, Sora, in February, and earlier today, Marques Brownlee, aka MKBHD, confirmed the launch with a preview based on his experiences testing Sora so far
During the livestream, OpenAI showed off Sora’s new explore page with a feed of AI-generated videos created by other community members. The company highlighted a feature called “storyboards” that let you generate videos based on a sequence of prompts
as well as the ability to turn photos into videos
OpenAI also demonstrated a “remix” tool that lets you tweak Sora’s output with a text prompt
along with a way to “blend” two scenes together with AI
OpenAI says videos generated with Sora will have visible watermarks and C2PA metadata to indicate they’re made with AI

It says the “misuse of media uploads” could result in an account ban or suspension

If you don’t have a ChatGPT subscription, you’ll still be able to browse through the feed of AI-generated videos created by other people using Sora. While the model will become available in the US and many other countries today, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that it may “be a while” for a launch in “most of Europe and the UK.”
The release of Sora comes just a week after a group of artists, who claimed to be part of the company’s alpha testing program, leaked the product in protest of being used by OpenAI for what they claim was “unpaid R&D and PR.”

Users of a premium version of OpenAI’s flagship product ChatGPT can now use Sora to instantly create AI-generated videos based on written commands. Among the highlighted examples are high-quality video clips of sumo-wrestling bears and a cat sipping coffee.
But only a small set of invited testers can use Sora to make videos of humans as OpenAI works to “address concerns around misappropriation of likeness and deepfakes,” the company said in a blog post.
OpenAI says it is blocking content with nudity and that a top priority is preventing the most harmful uses, including child sexual abuse material and sexual deepfakes.
The highly anticipated product received so much response upon its Monday release that OpenAI has temporarily paused the creation of new accounts.
“We’re currently experiencing heavy traffic and have temporarily disabled Sora account creation,” according to its webpage.
OpenAI first unveiled Sora earlier this year but said it wanted to first engage with artists, policymakers and others before releasing the new tool to the public.
The company, which has been sued by some authors and The New York Times over its use of copyrighted works of writing to train ChatGPT, hasn’t disclosed what imagery and video sources were used to train Sora.

Sora uses the "recaptioning technique" to take descriptive text captions for visual data training

OpenAI has officially launched Sora
CEO Sam Altman immediately kicked off the livestream by announcing the Sora public release
Sora will be available today to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users in the U.S
and other countries — excluding the UK and countries within the EU
in an indirect response to criticisms that tools like Sora are exploiting and replacing the work of creatives
Flynn emphasized that "Sora is a tool" and an "extension for the creator behind it."
In the livestream, OpenAI product lead Rohan Sahai and product designer Joey Flynn wasted no time in sharing Sora's capabilities. The tool lives on a standalone website, sora.com
with an explore tab for discovering what other users are creating
users can see the methods used to the create the video
users can get started making their own video with a text prompt or uploading an image
There are also certain default presets like "stop motion" and "balloon world."
Sora also comes with a more advanced tool called Storyboard
which allows users to shape the video with specific directions
Storyboard bears a similar resemblance to other video editing tools with frame views on the bottom and various editing tools
Each "storyboard card" or frame can be generated from a text prompt or image upload
Users can use the recut feature to shift cards around
the remix feature to describe specific changes to the sequence
or blend to create a transition between multiple scenes
In OpenAI's announcement
the company shared some of its safety measures
All Sora-generated videos come with C2PA invisible watermarks
such as child sexual abuse materials and sexual deepfakes," and limits uploads of people
ChatGPT Plus users get 50 videos a month at 480p (or 720p for less videos) and ChatGPT Pro users get 10 times more usage
The video generator Sora has been made available by OpenAI in the European Union
the United Kingdom and surrounding EEA countries
That’s more than two months after the U.S
Sora’s release had been delayed for Europe and surrounding jurisdictions
Meta AI is still not available in Europe a year and a half since it was first released
while Google waited four months to roll out its ChatGPT competitor Bard (now Gemini) back in 2023
The EU version of the video generator Sora itself appears to be entirely in line with what OpenAI promised and what users in the U.S
Those on more expensive ChatGPT plans get access to higher resolutions
All kinds of prompts are deemed acceptable
but the tool refuses to generate sensitive material
this is not very different from how the large language models behind ChatGPT are safeguarded
Whether it is so easy to talk about “overregulation,” at least regarding video generation is questionable
what has Europe lost with this additional regulation
they must comply with the restrictive legislation before launching their products in the first place
Therein lies another definite disadvantage for European players looking to build their own Sora alternative and release it quickly

A group of artists that were early testers for OpenAI's Sora leaked access to the AI video generator on Tuesday
But let's get the facts straight so the story isn't oversimplified
OpenAI has since shut down access to Sora for all early testers. But for about three hours, the public could test out Sora for themselves. According to a statement shared with the demo hosted on Hugging Face
the artists released access to Sora as a protest against "art washing," which they believe they were "lured into" by OpenAI
But there's a little more nuance to the story to than "disgruntled anti-AI artists leak the model." Let's dive into what it was and wasn't
A leak of Sora may have sounded like a moment of truth that many had been waiting for
But this is still very much up for debate as OpenAI and other companies face ongoing lawsuits about whether AI-generated content is sufficiently original and whether it commercially competes with human works
When TechCrunch first reported the leak
everyone was dying to look under the hood and see what Sora was made of
But the Sora leak doesn't offer any intel about the model or its training data
It was essentially a publicly available web-based demo
likely made possible by sharing API access
It appears to have just granted the public sneaky backdoor access to Sora's functionality on OpenAI's servers
But while anyone in the world was briefly able to generate Sora videos
this type of leak doesn't grant us any new information about the Sora model itself
The artists that made Sora publicly accessible did so because they felt like OpenAI was "exploiting artists for unpaid R&D and PR" by leveraging unpaid labor in form of bug testing and feedback
"every output needs to be approved by the OpenAI team before sharing
This early access program appears to be less about creative expression and critique
The group wasn't mincing words when it called OpenAI "corporate AI overlords" complete with middle finger emoticons
they "are not against the use of AI technology as a tool for the arts," since they wouldn't have been invited to participate as early testers otherwise
What they are against is "how this artist program has been rolled out and how the tool is shaping up ahead of a possible public release."
This is the kind of nuance that often gets lost in AI discourse
Many artists aren't opposed to using AI as a tool for creative expression
But opposing exploitation of creative works and job replacement by automation is often conflated with anti-innovation
We don't know exactly what it is about how Sora is "shaping up" ahead of its release that prompted the revolt
but it's safe to say OpenAI wants a positive review from its artist testers

A group of artists has leaked access to Sora
an OpenAI artificial intelligence model designed for video generation that is currently in private alpha
The artists made Sora’s application programming interface accessible via Hugging Face, Quartz reported today
OpenAI blocked access to the API after about three hours
Sora debuted in February and is currently not available to the public
It allows users to generate videos up to one minute in length with natural language prompts
A prompt can contain several sentences describing what objects a clip should depict
how those objects should interact and other details
it detailed plans to share it with a limited number of artists through an early access program
The company stated that the goal is to collect feedback on how Sora can be made more useful for creative professionals
OpenAI also shared the model’s API with a number of red teamers
cybersecurity experts who focus on identifying vulnerabilities and other issues in AI models
Sora’s API was posted to Hugging Face by a group of about 20 artists who participated in the early access program
They explained that they leaked access to the model because they found fault in how OpenAI managed the program
“What we don’t agree with is how this artist program has been rolled out and how the tool is shaping up ahead of a possible public release,” they wrote
The group took issue with the fact that Sora-generated videos must be approved by OpenAI before they can be shared
the artists criticized an initiative through which the ChatGPT developer plans to screen films created by some early Sora testers
The initiative offers “minimal compensation which pales in comparison to the substantial PR and marketing value OpenAI receives,” the artists wrote on Hugging Face
The company said in a statement that “hundreds of artists in our alpha have shaped Sora’s development
helping prioritize new features and safeguards
with no obligation to provide feedback or use the tool.”
OpenAI has not yet provided a release date for Sora
share plans to add C2PA support in the event that it decides to make the model commercially available
C2PA is a technology that makes it easier to determine if a video was generated by AI
If the company decides to commercialize Sora
it may also release new versions that address some of the limitations in the model’s current iteration
It divulged in February that Sora sometimes struggles to “simulate the physics of a complex scene.” On occasions
the model also misinterprets prompts that include “spatial details” such as the direction in which an object should move
OpenAI’s DALL-E series of image generation models
has received several major upgrades since its release
The company has also built it into ChatGPT
It’s possible OpenAI will add a similar integration to Sora if and when it decides to make the video generator commercially available

OpenAI has certainly been hard at work to update and improve its AI video generator in preparation for its public launch
YouTuber Marques Brownlee had a first look at Sora
releasing his video review of the latest OpenAI product hours before OpenAI even officially announced the launch
his Sora testing found that the AI video generator excels at creating landscapes
drone-like shots of nature or famous landscapes look just like real-life stock footage
if you are specifically well-versed in how the surroundings of a landmark look
there's not too much that looks distinctly AI-generated in these types of Sora-created clips
Perhaps the type of video Sora is best able to create
Background or screensaver type abstract art can be made quite well by Sora even with specific instructions
Brownlee also found that Sora-generated certain types of animated content
like stop-motion or claymation type animation
look passable at times as the sometimes jerky movements that still plague AI video look like stylistic choices
Brownlee found that Sora was able to handle very specific animated text visuals
Words often show up as garbled text in other AI image and video generation models
Brownlee found that as long as the text was specific
Sora was able to generate the visual with correct spelling
still presents many of the same problems that all AI video generators that came before it have struggled with
The first thing Brownlee mentions is object permanence
a specific object in an individual's hand throughout the runtime of the video
Sometimes the object will move or just suddenly disappear
Sora's AI video suffers from hallucinations.
Which brings Brownlee to Sora's biggest problem: Physics in general
Photorealistic video seems to be quite challenging for Sora because it can't just seem to get movement down right
A person simply walking will start slowing down or speeding up in unnatural ways
Body parts or objects will suddenly warp into something completely different at times as well
while Brownlee did mention those improvements with text
Sora still garbles the spelling of any sort of background text like you might see on buildings or street signs
While it may offer a step up from other AI video generators
it's clear that there are just some areas where all AI video models are going to find challenging.
