Sitting astride cliffs that plunge down to the brilliant-blue Bay of Naples and at the gateway to the fabled Amalfi Coast this glam coastal town has got it all going on–a historic center brimming with pastel-painted palazzi and roads twisting vertiginously down to a marina where the irresistible tang of freshly grilled seafood hangs on the sea breeze.  Whether you’re slow-touring the peninsula in search of a cliff-clasped cove or sipping an icy limoncello piazza-side as the lights glimmer And it has long been this way: during the 18th- and 19th-century heyday of the Grand Tour Read our first-time guide and get planning your trip and you soon will be Intense heat and crowds rule out the peak months of July and August for anything other than lazy days spent hanging out at beaches, lidos (beach club), and waterfront bars. Room rates and temperatures soar, with highs reaching 35°C (95°F). The roads are jammed, especially if you’re heading on to the Amalfi Coast with an events calendar fizzing with live music Top billing goes to the Festa di Sant'Anna in Marina Grande in July and the Ferragosto festivities in mid-August bright days bring highs of around 25°C (77°F) making this a cracking time for exploring and coastal hiking Sorrento’s White Procession is one of Italy’s most atmospheric Holy Week parades with hooded penitents streaming through the streets by flickering torchlight September is another terrific month to visit and a flurry of sagre (food festivals) championing local produce and Sorrento largely goes into hibernation You can buy tickets in advance online; they cost €5 (US$5.40) EAV trains link Napoli Centrale station with Sorrento via Herculaneum but if you want to stop off elsewhere on the way and you’ll also need nerve for the hairpin roads and traffic of the Amalfi Coast.  Hugging cliffs and staggering down to the sea, Sorrento’s pastel-washed centro storico is a cat’s cradle of cobbled lanes and palazzi (mansions) where nobility swanned around in the 17th and 18th centuries.  Sorrento doesn’t really have a proper beach but it doesn’t need one with the Bagni Regina Giovanna a mile west of town and a rugged 30-minute walk via Via Capo You’ll want to leap straight into the jewel-like green-blue waters of this dramatic natural bathing hole But their history runs far deeper than what you see.  This was once the seaside retreat of Roman nobleman Pollio Felice, and you can now swim among the ruins of his 1st-century AD villa The name is a nod to the legend that Queen Giovanna II of Anjou of Naples used to meet her lovers here in the 15th century.  Off the west coast of the Sorrento Peninsula, ritzy Capri delivers beauty that is off the charts and yacht harbors hum with the mega-rich on holiday.  Cliffs rear above Marina Grande with wow-worthy views of Mt Vesuvius on the horizon It’s a steep walk down from the center to this cute where fishermen still mend their nets and boats bob on the sparkling blue waters of the Gulf of Naples.  Come for a swim in crystal waters, watch the world drift on by from a cafe terrace, or do as the Sorrentini do and book a table for lunch or sunset dinner at one of the seafood restaurants. Our money goes on Soul & Fish dishing up the day’s catch with flair - from spaghetti alle vongole (with clams almond-crusted tuna and lobster risotto infused with Sorrento lemons The Sorrentini have long known that when life gives you lemons, you make limoncello - or, perhaps, the smoothest lemon sorbet or ice cream. Sharp, zingy, and huge, the lemons here taste of sunshine. One of my favorite things to do is to take a fragrant walk among them in the Giardini di Cataldo orchards Hook onto a tour here for the inside scoop on the region’s oranges and lemons If I want to grab a cone, I swing by Antica Gelateria Sorrentina, whipping up some of Sorrento’s best gelato since 1860. Tucked down a narrow alley, it serves divine limoncello sorbet and lemon ice cream. Right in the heart of town on Via Marziale, Gelateria David is another must for outstanding homemade gelato Here you can learn how to make the good stuff at a 45-minute ice cream workshop with gelato master Mario Gargiulo Sorrento has long magnetized the rich and famous Room rates go through the roof during peak season with a sunbed on the beach setting you back as much as €20 (US$21) and even the simplest lunch at a cafe costing €100 (US$108) Sidestep the peak summer months and you can snag good deals on flights and rooms There’s no need to splurge on fancy restaurants either - seeking out local bakeries and supermarkets for cheap eats will save you a fortune and you can stock up on picnic provisions at the Tuesday morning street market in Via San Renato Most places accept cards but have small change handy for small buys and tips Basic room for two in a budget hotel or B&B: €60-100 (US$65-108) Room for two in an upscale hotel: €150-450 (US$163-488) Self-catering apartment (including Airbnb): from €70 (US$76) Train ticket from Naples to Sorrento: €10 (US$11) Full-day boat trip along the Amalfi Coast: from €70 (US$76) Ferry ticket from Sorrento to Capri: €16.40 (US$17.80) Bottle of limoncello: €20 (US$15.75)  Dinner for two at an upscale restaurant: €80-120 (US$87-130) so think along the lines of light cottons and linens and chic beachwear by day and throw something dressy in the case for the evening Pack an extra layer (a jumper or jacket) for spring and autumn Dress modestly in churches (shoulders and knees covered) All things made with oranges and lemons - from limoncello and other liqueurs to marmalades, lemon-scented oils, chocolates and sweets. Otherwise, look out for intarsio (marquetry) pieces, such as those sold at traditional Gargiulo & Jannuzzi Named after Renaissance poet Torquato Tasso, Piazza Tasso is Sorrento’s beating heart and an atmospheric spot for an aperitivo as the sun sets. Go for an ice-cold limoncello spritz on the terrace of Fauno Bar, before joining the Sorrentini for their evening passeggiata (stroll). I left mine at home in the US as I thought I wouldn’t need it now that I am leaving Sorrento in just a few weeks it doesn’t feel worth it to make purchases of things I already have at home I ended up just purchasing broccoli and potatoes because I had been planning on buying them at some point that day anyways; it was an enjoyable experience just walking around and looking through all that was being sold despite not buying anything particularly special I would recommend visiting this market if you’re looking for some fairly inexpensive clothing and other items and if you enjoy the experience of looking through a lot of things to find the treasure of what you will take home with you Questo sito web utilizza i cookie per migliorare la vostra esperienza durante la navigazione attraverso il sito web I cookie che vengono classificati come necessari vengono memorizzati sul tuo browser Questi vengono salvati in quanto sono essenziali per il funzionamento delle funzionalità di base del sito Utilizziamo anche cookie di terze parti che ci aiutano ad analizzare e capire come utilizzi questo sito Questi cookie saranno memorizzati nel tuo browser solo con il tuo consenso Hai anche la possibilità di opt-out di questi cookie Ma l'esclusione da alcuni di questi cookie può avere un effetto sulla vostra esperienza di navigazione Louisiana State Police reported an investigation into child sexual abuse material resulted in the arrest of a Sorrento suspect who was charged with 792 counts of pornography involving juveniles under the age of 13 35-year-old Matthew Corkern was arrested and booked into the Ascension Parish Jail The investigation into child sexual abuse material began in December 2024 the investigation began after LSP SVU received an online tip related to the sexual exploitation of minors which included information about a social media account containing multiple videos of child sexual abuse material Investigators reportedly obtained a search warrant for the account and identified Corkern as the suspected owner After executing search and arrest warrants at a residence belonging to the suspect April 25 he was arrested and charged with 62 counts of pornography involving juveniles under the age of 13 authorities reported an additional 730 images and videos were found on a cellular device allegedly owned by the suspect An additional 730 counts of possession of pornography involving juveniles under the age of 13 were charged April 28 Ascension Parish Jail records showed bond was set at $620,000 The LSP Special Victims Unit was assisted by the FBI Baton Rouge Field Office Attorney General Liz Murrill’s Louisiana Bureau of Investigation in affiliation with the Louisiana Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force the LSP Criminal Investigations Division and the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office The release added that the public plays a key role in identifying suspects accused of child abuse crimes and is urged to report criminal or suspicious activity The LSP online reporting system is available to the public through an anonymous reporting form that is submitted to the appropriate investigators. The fire near Innerarity Point and Sorrento Road is 70% contained at 30 acres and crews continue to build line in wet, marshy conditions, according to the Florida Forest Service Blackwater Forestry Center. Firefighters will leave the scene once it is secured and return in the morning to seak out any lingering hot spots. Motorists and residents are warned they likely will see lingering smoke in the area tonight and into the morning hours and should use caution. Escambia County is actively responding to a brush fire in the 5500 block of Corinna Street near Innerarity Point and Sorrento Road. Escambia County Emergency Communications received a call at approximately 3:57 p.m. and immediately responded to the area. Escambia County Fire Rescue, EMS, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Forest Service are currently on scene responding to the brush fire. Joe Zwierzchowski, a spokesman for the Florida Forest Service Blackwater Forestry Center, estimated the blaze is about 30 acres and said they currently have a two bulldozers, a brush truck and a helicopter at the site. "The reason the helicopter is there is because of the location," Zwierzchowski said. "The majority of this fire is kind of out in the marsh – a swampy, sawgrass kind of area – and our bulldozers cannot get to it." He said firefighters have put a fire line behind the structures on Corinna Street. "So, we're able to work directly behind the structures and with Escambia Fire Rescue and protect the structures, but we can't get out into the marsh where the rest of the fire is." As ground teams safeguard the nearby homes, the helicopter will be dropping water on the blaze. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office has advised motorists to avoid the area between the Innerarity Point Road intersection, Sorrento Road and Doug Ford Drive at this time. processions representing the Passion of Christ I attended the three processions taking place in Sorrento on Holy Thursday and Good Friday Seeing these processions was such a unique experience and allowed me to see the importance of Sorrento’s religious traditions surrounding Easter The first procession I attended was on Holy Thursday at 8:30pm Rosario (Venerable Archconfraternity of the Most Holy Rosary) but I didn’t get there quite early enough so I was standing behind a bunch of people and I could barely see what was happening After everyone in the procession had left the church some following the procession and others walking towards Corso Italia I ended up walking to Piazza Tasso and was able to see the procession much better this time when it passed through One part of the procession that wasn’t a part of the initial leaving the church was a band playing Funeral Marches at the head of the procession but as soon as the processional music was heard those wearing black and white robes with white hoods that covered their faces walked through A couple of those at the beginning were wearing crowns of thorns on their heads These were then followed by a group carrying lamps or torches Some of the items carried were what I had seen before in the procession for Sant’Antonino Then the symbols of the Passion of Christ were carried: a rooster and others that I either couldn’t identify or see clearly in the dark The main statue of this procession was a very large one of Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane This was an impressive statue and it rested on a bed of flowers and was carried on the shoulders of many people I was able to see it later displayed in the church the next day and getting to see it up close when it wasn’t moving was really nice because I could fully appreciate the intricacies of it at the end of the procession were those reciting prayers in unison I walked past the church on the way back to my dorm so I stepped in and I was stunned by the beauty of it I stood in the church processing what I had just witnessed and praying having been reminded of the seriousness of it This procession was organized by the Arciconfraternita di Santa Monica (Archconfraternity of Santa Monica) and is La Processione Bianca dell’Addolorata The White Procession of Our Lady of Sorrows This time I made sure to arrive earlier at the church where it began It felt surreal being outside in Sorrento at such an early hour I could hear singing: a chorus of voices in sync that pierced through the silence of the night I was able to see the exit from the church in a pretty narrow pathway so I was standing very close to the procession as it passed by This procession is known as The White Procession as those in it were dressed in white robes and hoods Much of this procession was similar to the one of the prior evening The large group of men who were practicing when I first arrived at the church sang a chant as they walked by without any musical accompaniment This procession’s main statue was that of Mary Although I didn’t personally see this part I have read that the procession goes from church to church visiting the sepulchres to bring the statue in as if she is looking for her son in each the last procession was at 8:30pm on Friday was organized by the Venerabile Arciconfraternita Della Morte (The Venerable Archconfraternity of Death) the participants were dressed in black robes and hoods they were holding symbols of Christ’s death This procession also included the same singing of the chant the Psalm 51 (“Miserere Hymn”) composed by King David as a confession to God after he sinned with Bathsheba The main statue of this procession was a large one of the dead body of Jesus This statue was lying on a bed of flowers and surrounded by candles now dressed in the black clothes of mourning the experience of attending these three processions was unlike anything I had ever seen before seeing these hooded figures walk the dark streets but experiencing these solemn processions really brought to light the importance of religious tradition to Sorrento as these processions happen every year and are participated in and attended by many The Ascension Parish home rule charter amendment failed and the Town of Sorrento elected its five council members in the March 29 election A total of 73 percent (10,871 votes) chose no while 27 percent (4,084 votes) voted yes on the home rule charter amendment Approval would have allowed for the deletion of "governing authority members shall receive an annual salary not to exceed the maximum amount allowed for police jurors by state law." Sorrento voters selected the five council members from a list of seven as just a single vote separated the candidates in fifth and sixth place: Wanda LeBlanc Bourgeois - 161 votes (17 percent)Duane Humphrey - 155 votes (17 percent)Randy Anny - 144 votes (16 percent)Chad Domingue - 138 votes (15 percent)Patti Melancon Poche - 114 votes (12 percent)Darnell Gilbert - 113 votes (12 percent)Harrison "Jake" Benson - 103 votes (11 percent)Domingue is currently mayor pro tem Bourgeois and Humphrey are also current council members Mayor Chris Guidry qualified unopposed for the election during the Jan 29-31 qualifying period and will serve a new four-year term he also was the lone candidate to qualify for mayor as he replaced two-term Mayor Mike Lambert the first Tuesday of each month at the Sorrento Community Center For more information on the town, visit sorrentola.gov Also, all four proposed statewide constitutional amendments failed TAVARES — A man has been arrested a man in connection with a shooting death in Sorrento the Lake County Sheriff's Office announced Friday evening will be held on a charge of second-degree murder According to a news release from the sheriff's office on Thursday deputies responded to a shooting at the 31500 block of Colby Place in Sorrento Witnesses told deputies that Kates and Fout were involved in an altercation before Fout shot the victim Fout left the area in an older model white Dodge Ram van alongside a female passenger and person of interest and the rear should have red transfer paint from striking another vehicle The sheriff's office on Friday circulated pictures of Fout Later in the day the agency announced that law enforcement had located and arrested Fout Last weekend – April 24-27 – the Sorrento Writers Festival hosted more 220 speakers across 169 events We activated 10 local venues and we sold an extraordinary 22,743 tickets although they’re still working out actual numbers they estimate  around 7-8000 people were in and around Sorrento stopping by galleries and visiting our local tourism sites Uncategorized Monique Ryan in Melborune and Allegra Spender in Sydney JOY acknowledges that we work and broadcast from the lands of the Yalukit-Willam Clan of the Boon Wurrung Peoples We also acknowledge the traditional owner of lands throughout Australia – and pay our respects to elders past and present as well as brotherboys and sistergirls of the LGBTIQA+ Community Chris Guidry qualified unopposed and will serve a new four-year term as mayor for the Town of Sorrento while seven candidates signed up for the March 29 election to select five council members "I would like to thank the residents of Sorrento for allowing me to run unopposed yet again," the mayor said in a Facebook post "I look forward to serving you as mayor again for the next four years." the United States I am interning at About Sorrento while studying at Sant’Anna Institute for the semester I had been looking forward to studying in Sorrento because of its beautiful views and classes and experiences (like this internship!) that would immerse me in Italian culture I’ve now been in Sorrento for about two weeks and it’s been an experience filled with new sights and I could not fall back asleep after waking up early in the morning my roommate and I went into the streets of Sorrento and explored standing on the pier and looking out at the water and enjoying the peaceful view of the quiet waters Seeing the beauty of the coast in the early daylight hours and walking around the nearly empty streets made it feel surreal that this beautiful area was where I would be living for the next few months That sentiment has continued as I’ve seen more of Sorrento and have started to become more comfortable with navigating the area One of my favorite things are all the cats wandering around Although I don’t have any cats of my own at home I really like cats and hope to have some as pets in the future I have a feeling that by the time I leave Sorrento Some are friendly and talkative; others are timid and can be enticed with food A couple of friends and I walked around Sorrento with a can of cat food but we were able to feed one that shied away from us at first Another of my favorite things is definitely the food There are so many kinds of food to try while I am here but so far the food I’ve had has been splendid my professor gave us the assignment to go find and try some sfogliatella and I liked that it was one that would allow me to explore more of Sorrento I was intimidated by this because I didn’t know where things were This sweet pastry has a flaky layered outside and the one I had was filled with a creamy lemon filling trying various flavors of gelato (my favorite so far is the Sorrento lemon flavor) alongside grocery shopping and cooking a lot of pasta for myself Stepping outside of my comfort zone (or flying out of it in this case) was a big change but I am excited to learn a lot about Italian culture and myself during these next few months 64,000-square-foot lab in Sorrento Valley will be key to preparedness when “Pandemic preparedness is just a fancy way of saying the chief innovation officer for Maravai/TriLink BioTechnologies “Be better ready than we were the first time around.” The lab will specialize in making the ingredients and components for mRNA the main part of the COVID-19 vaccines that helped end the pandemic in 2021 Broderick and other TriLink executives said the pandemic taught drug companies important lessons about making sure the U.S has everything it needs to respond quickly to any new disease or outbreak “It was eye-opening,” said Vice President and General Manager of Operations Kevin Lynch “It started all the way at the beginning with raw materials We had to strengthen our supply chain logistics we had to make sure we had qualified alternatives and we had to have capacity that was ready to go.” The new lab is fully automated and can ramp up production in a matter of days Lynch said it has its own reverse-osmosis water filtration system keeping a key ingredient for mRNA always at the ready It also has a generator that can keep the facility running for 24 hours if the power grid goes down The building’s four labs are all streamlined for efficiency Lynch said they can produce about two kilograms of mRNA every couple of weeks if needed enough to make millions of vaccines per week—much faster than the U.S “The design of this building was absolutely critical when we think about what to do next when Recent news highlights the concern of another pandemic The World Health Organization just declared a global health emergency over M-pox has been tracking the spread of avian flu across the U.S It has already infected millions of birds and hundreds of cows The CDC says it has also confirmed 13 human cases While neither disease has risen to the level of threat that COVID-19 reached in 2020 Broderick and Lynch said the facility is ready to help if needed It could also be used for other medical needs “We shouldn’t ever underestimate any virus,” Broderick said “And don’t forget how incredibly disruptive the COVID pandemic was As much as we don’t want to think about it That’s what this building allows us to do.” I think many of us associate it with the COVID vaccine But that’s just the tip of the iceberg - mRNA is now being tested for flu vaccines There almost isn’t a disease that mRNA can’t impact.” TriLink officials said choosing Sorrento Valley for the new facility was an easy decision The company already has two other locations in the area and the proximity to UC San Diego gives the company access to a highly trained Please enable JS and disable any ad blocker Home » #MyPOVSorrento » My First 7 Weeks in Sorrento: Looking Back and Forward I can’t believe it’s already been almost 2 months As I take time now to reflect on how this first half of the semester has been I’m realizing just how much I’ve learned about Sorrento and how much more there is to see I see so much beauty: both in the views and in the community Sorrento has to offer Having this internship has been great at pushing me out of my comfort zone in a good way allowing me to discover new places and attend events that I might not have had the courage to go to by myself if I didn’t have a mission to write about it This immersion into Italian culture has been a great way to become more familiar with Sorrento The classes I’m taking at Sant’Anna Institute focus on Italian history and language and have definitely helped my knowledge of Italian culture grow but there is something different about walking out into the streets of Sorrento and experiencing it for myself One of the first traditions I had the privilege of experiencing was for Sorrento’s patron saint This was when I began to notice the feeling of community created when so many people come together to celebrate The parade in particular was so different than anything I had seen before and it was a truly insightful look into how a town’s patron saint is honored The second festival and parade I was able to see was for Carnevale and this had an entirely different feeling was a celebration that seemed to be aimed towards children familiar characters down the streets as people threw confetti and sprayed each other with silly string I was amongst families and many children in costumes reminding me of Halloween parades and celebrations I had seen in the US Although at times I’ve felt a bit out of place I’ve loved getting to experience pieces of Sorrento’s local traditions firsthand Being able to explore places in and around Sorrento has been a blast seeing new sights and experiencing new foods Being in Italy really does feel like there is a piece of history on every corner it is also fairly simple to visit other places and I’ve had so much fun going by train and bus to other places in Italy like Pompeii But it’s always nice at the end of these trips getting to return to lovely Sorrento The opportunity to capture Sorrento in writing and images for About Sorrento has been a splendid way to reflect and share about what I have seen throughout my time here in Sorrento there are some exciting traditions in Sorrento to look forward to The biggest ones are the processions of Holy Week I’ve heard from multiple people about these traditional processions and I’m looking forward to finally experiencing them for myself These processions occur on Holy Thursday and Good Friday The White Procession of Our Lady of Sorrows represents the search by Mary It is called the White Procession in reference to the color of the robes and hoods worn by those in the procession this solemn procession includes a statue of the dead Christ this procession is called the Black Procession due to the color of the robes and hoods worn I’m looking forward to the other traditional aspects of Holy Week Palme di confetti confetti palms are sugar coated almonds arranged to look like branches and flowers and are gifted to friends and family Pastiera Napoletana is a traditional pastry from Naples made with ricotta cheese Easter bread comes in sweet and savory varieties This bread is in a circular shape which references the crown of thorns placed on Jesus’ head Neapolitan tortano is this savory Easter bread but has whole eggs on top I’m looking forward to seeing these processions and trying these foods and writing about them and in just a few weeks you’ll be able to read about my experience A truck drives past the blockades for I-12 on Essen Lane during a winter storm that covered Southern
