‘We took the tough decision’ – Vasseur defends Ferrari team orders situation in Miami as he acknowledges Hamilton’s frustration
McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella was left smiling at the end of a dominant performance by his team
with Oscar Piastri winning the Miami Grand Prix from Lando Norris
With the team having already bagged a 1-2 in Saturday's Sprint
the pace the papaya squad displayed in the Grand Prix itself had the paddock talking
READ MORE: Norris concedes he 'paid the price' as he reflects on Lap 1 battle with Verstappen in Miami
Piastri and Norris finished relatively close together with 4.6 seconds between the two team mates
but third-placed George Russell was over 33 seconds behind Norris
while Max Verstappen’s Red Bull – that had started on pole – was nearly 40 seconds adrift at the flag
That gap was by far the most dominant performance of the season from any team
and was gained after both Piastri and Norris had to climb back through the field in the early stages
2025 Miami Grand Prix: Piastri powers past Verstappen to take the lead
“I'm a little surprised that the gap we had today is as big as we saw,” Stella said after Sunday's Grand Prix
“I thought that we could have had an advantage from a tyre management point of view but I didn't think that the tyre management would lead to this level of gap throughout the race
“One of the matters that still in Formula 1 looks like it's a little bit of a black art
I would say especially when it's hot there's another characteristic which I think works very well with our car
you can see that is relatively closed from a bodywork point of view because there's been also great engineering going into the cooling system
I think in these conditions we see the excellence of the engineering at McLaren has reached a point where it can make a difference to this kind of extent.”
READ MORE: Piastri full of praise for McLaren after ‘unbelievable’ and ‘impressive’ victory in Miami
During the early stages of the Miami Grand Prix eventual winner Piastri had to overtake Kimi Antonelli – which he did with relative ease – and Max Verstappen to climb into the lead
Norris had to pass even more cars to get to second after dropping to sixth on the opening lap
with the Briton's bold attempt to get past polesitter Verstappen at the start failing to give him the reward he was after
The 25-year-old conceded post race that he "paid the price" for the move and
McLaren's electric pace could have allowed him to lift at that moment and fight back later from a higher position
McLaren recorded a 1-2 in both the Sprint and the Grand Prix
Stella explained: “Let's say that considering the situation [on Lap 1]
it could have been better for Lando to just lift and make sure that he could keep the second position because the car
we see was very fast and he would certainly have passed Max like Oscar and
you have to approach with the mindset of reviewing where the opportunities lie
and I think in this case Lando could have been a little bit more patient
HIGHLIGHTS: Piastri leads McLaren 1-2 after thrilling race in Miami
"But I quite like to see Lando aggressive
going for overtaking the lead of the race and sometimes it's just the matter of a fraction of a second
In this situation the stewards elected that there was no need to intervene but definitely the manoeuvre was quite at the limit.”
with Verstappen forcing both Piastri and then Norris to try and go around his outside into Turn 1
Stella did admit that Norris lost time in his fight – while Piastri made it past the Dutchman cleanly
Norris needed several goes and even had to give the place back at one point after overtaking off the track
2025 Miami Grand Prix: Norris comes out on top after epic battle with Verstappen for P2
This was the crucial period of the race where Piastri in free air was able to disappear up the road – leaving Norris too much to do once he did get into second place
the lap time or race time was lost because he needed to give back the position,” elaborated Stella
"It was fair to give back the position because when overtaking we exceeded the track limits so there's a few things that we need to improve
“Certainly there are things to improve even from Oscar's side
like if you look back at qualifying I think Oscar lost a little bit of rhythm from Q2 to Q3 so even in that case we have some opportunities
I think both drivers are very open to this kind of review

singer-songwriter Stella Cole (Communication ’21) reminded the world during her pseudo-hometown show April 30
graced the stage at Park West donning a red cocktail dress
a contagious smile and her musical triplet
Opening with “On a Clear Day” from the eponymous movie
she was joined by her regular band members on the bass and drums and NU faculty member Jeremy Kahn on the piano
whose performance was secured in a pinch after the regular pianist was injured a few days before the six-week tour began.
Nostalgia was an overarching theme throughout the show
Cole described a joyful Chicago-related experience about her childhood in the Springfield theatre
chastising herself for losing her thick skin after time spent in a warmer New York
Cole’s vulnerable reflections on life growing up in Illinois and her college years in Evanston brought a refreshing intimacy to the mid-sized venue that was completely filled by seated attendees
Cole admitted to the audience that during college she doubted her talent and marketability as a singer
The vintage songs originally sung by greats like Julie Andrews and Barbra Streisand may have been Cole’s lifelong interest but seemed uninteresting to others.
“I wondered if I was even good at this,” said Cole.
Cole’s frank admission placed a blanket of admiration over the crowd of about 400 people as she teared up singing the following song
was clearly in awe of a girl who once doubted herself
living out her dreams in front of our very own eyes.
“It is amazing to get paid to sing the songs I have loved all my life,” Cole said
“I never even knew this was a job I could have.”
Cole sprinkled in songs from her first self-titled record — which was released in 2024 — along with new material from her second album that will be released later this summer
The original songs meshed perfectly with the American Songbook classics and her voice’s vintage tone
The crowd was taken by Cole’s entrancing Midwestern charm that shone through in her post-song debriefs
The show ended with two hard-hitting tunes straight out of the Songbook: Cole’s angry rendition of “Cry Me a River” by Julie London and a universal favorite
“Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Judy Garland
Cole’s teary-eyed finale was met with a standing ovation from the audience
Honest admissions about her career as well as humorous anecdotes made up a large portion of the show
Cole’s nervous laughter in a room full of satisfied fans gave the show a revitalizing comfort
a sharp contrast to the modern nature of concerts that require fans to go into Ticketmaster war to see their favorite artist from the nosebleeds.
I was pleasantly surprised at how entertaining a sit down
Cole’s stage presence and unique tone was literally music to my ears
I highly recommend seeing her upcoming shows

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella believes Formula 1 rival Red Bull is inventing a “narrative” that suggests it is achieving miracles just by competing for pole positions and wins this season.
Max Verstappen sealed his third pole of 2025 for Sunday’s Miami Grand Prix and will be aiming to convert it into a second victory of the campaign to remain in the fight for a fifth consecutive drivers’ title
The Dutchman has been able to keep the McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri honest so far
despite widespread acknowledgement that the reigning champions have the fastest car on the grid
the suggestion that Red Bull is severely lagging behind in the battle at the front is something it is happy to play in to
they are very exceptionally good I would say at driving fast cars and they are extremely good also in creating the narrative to their advantage,” he said
“They exploit every possible opportunity to stay in the competition and some of these opportunities sometimes is to create the narrative like: 'oh we are making miracles here
the others should win every single practice session and qualifying and race'
“But this is the narrative created by some of our competitors which we read occasionally and then we change the page
and we focus on ourselves and when we focus on ourselves we look at the numbers
we look at what we should be improving and there's a lot that we should be improving
I also look at what Lando and Oscar deliver and deliver quite consistently
well done to Red Bull even in terms of the way they manage their non-technical opportunities.”
Norris will start alongside Verstappen on the front row in Miami and
when asked by Autosport in the post-qualifying press conference if his rival was getting more out of the Red Bull than he and Piastri in the superior McLaren
Norris replied: “It is impossible to know what car he's got compared to us
The advantage we have is two quick drivers and they don't
“We have a car that's capable of allowing drivers to drive quicker but impossible to know
impossible to actually know the difference between the two cars.”

Cardinal Beniamino Stella stunned many cardinals this morning
at the seventh pre-conclave plenary assembly of cardinals when
“he openly attacked Pope Francis” for “bypassing the long-standing tradition of the church” that linked the power of governance in the church to holy orders
“instead imposed his own ideas” by opening positions of governance in the Roman Curia and the church to men and women not in holy orders
Cardinal Stella, the former prefect of the Dicastery for Clergy
is 83 years old and thus not eligible to vote in the coming conclave
as prefect of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life
He also appointed women to other positions of responsibility in the Vatican
America received this news from a cardinal who was present at the pre-conclave plenary assembly
That cardinal asked to remain anonymous since the cardinals take an oath of secrecy not to reveal to outsiders what is said in these plenary assemblies
“We have listened to many complaints against Francis’ papacy in these days
but the speech by Cardinal [Beniamino] Stella was by far the worst,” he said
He also revealed that Cardinal Raymond Burke spoke yesterday
about the previous pontificate but focused on aspects of canon law
the former head of the Apostolica Signatura
has long been seen as a critic of Pope Francis’ policies and writings
Cardinal Stella’s intervention was particularly disturbing to several of the 181 participants
including 124 cardinal electors present today
not the least of which is the fact that he was one of the people Francis trusted when he first came to the Vatican and gave him the red hat at his first consistory in February 2014
Cardinal Parolin is described by the Italian press (as well as bookmakers) as the front-runner to be elected as the 266th successor of St
Cardinal Stella’s reasoning is “that it is necessary that after the papacy of Francis, which created disorder and confusion
one needs a diplomatic and moderate figure
to put things back in order,” an informed Italian bishop
Cardinal Stella spent much of his life in the Holy See’s diplomatic service
he entered the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy
where the Holy See’s diplomats are trained
he joined the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1970 and first served in its diplomatic missions in the Dominican Republic and Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo)
before being recalled to serve at the Vatican’s Secretariat of State from 1976 to 1978 and from 1983 to 1987
Pope John Paul II ordained him archbishop and assigned him as pro-nuncio to the Republic of the Congo and Chad in 1987
The pope sent him as nuncio to Cuba in 1992 and as nuncio to Colombia in 1999
Pope Benedict XVI appointed him to head the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in 2007
who had known and trusted Stella before he was elected pope in March 2013
appointed him as the prefect of the then-Congregation for Clergy in September 2013 and made him a cardinal in 2014
Cardinal Stella remained the prefect of that congregation until 2021
who is chairing the general congregations and who sources also told America is actively supporting Cardinal Parolin’s candidacy
asked the cardinals to confine their interventions to five minutes but one of the cardinals told me that “many do not respect this time limit
the 93-year-old Cardinal Joseph Zen of Hong Kong
spoke for 15 minutes.” In his intervention
Cardinal Zen criticized the Synod on Synodality
The first part of today’s session focused on the economic and financial situation of the Holy See
according to the Vatican communique to the accredited media
the coordinator of the Council for the Economy
“presented an up-to-date overview of the existing challenges and critical issues
offering proposals geared toward sustainability and reiterating the importance of the economic structures continuing to provide stable support to the mission of the papacy.”
the camerlengo of the church during the vacancy of the papacy
spoke as the chair of the Committee for Investments
it said the Austrian cardinal Christoph Schönborn
the chair of the Supervisory Commission of Cardinals of the Institute for the Works of Religion
“offered a reflection on the Institute’s current situation.”
The Vatican also said that Cardinal Fernando Vérgez Alzaga
the Spanish-born president emeritus of the Governorate of Vatican City State
“provided some details regarding the Governorate
with reference also to some renovation works involving buildings of the State and the support provided to the Apostolic See.”
“spoke about the commitment of the Dicastery for the Service of Charity.”
The Vatican reported that the “Letter to the People of God,” which the press office released today
was read out during the second part of the session
The second part of today’s session also saw 14 cardinals address the assembly
They spoke on a variety of subjects that included “a reflection on the ecclesiology of the People of God
with particular reference to the suffering caused by polarization within the Church and the divisions in society.” Some also spoke about “the value of synodality
lived in close connection with episcopal collegiality
as an expression of differentiated co-responsibility.” Several spoke on “[t]he issue of priestly and religious vocations” in relation “to the spiritual and pastoral renewal of the Church.” Several speakers “made explicit reference to the documents of the Second Vatican Council
especially the apostolic constitutions Lumen Gentium and Gaudium et Spes.” Others spoke about “evangelization” and insisted on “the necessary coherence between the proclamation of the Gospel and the concrete witness of Christian life,” the Vatican said
and thus a holiday in both the Vatican and Italy
the cardinals will not meet for a general congregation and so will have time to meet and discuss the papabili and the conclave that opens a week from today
The next congregation will be held on Friday

'Grey’s Anatomy' star Ellen Pompeo aims to inspire her daughters and son
Norris started on the front row alongside Red Bull’s polesitter Verstappen but was forced wide by the four-time Formula 1 world champion at turn two and dropped back to sixth on the opening lap
He clawed his way back to second behind winning teammate Oscar Piastri but Stella felt it could have been handled better
it would have potentially been wiser for Lando to lift and accept he would have gained the lead later on in the race because the car was fast enough but that’s with the benefit of hindsight,” he told Sky Television
Norris and Verstappen nearly had a coming together later on in the race
which resulted in the McLaren driver giving back the place before later passing his championship rival to move into second
Stella insisted giving back the place was the right thing to do coming just two weeks after Verstappen was given a five-second penalty when he failed to give the lead back to Piastri after going ahead through running wide
He said: “I think that was the right thing to do because Lando
was outside the track limits and you have to give back the track position
“That’s a little bit of bad luck but you have to behave and behave fairly
That could have been the risk of a penalty so it was the right thing to do.”
was critical of Verstappen’s approach in the race saying he had no choice but to run wide to avoid a coming together as they vied for the lead at the start
The Briton said in his post-race interview: “What can I say
“But it’s the way it is with Max – it’s crash or don’t pass
Unless you get it really right and you put him in the perfect position then you can just about get there
“But I paid the price for not doing a good enough job today,” the Briton lamented. (Reporting by Alan Baldwin)

When New Yorkers Rachel R. and her partner Drew visited the ASPCA Adoption Center to adopt a pet
they met two dogs they’d seen online before selecting Stella
“Stella’s behavior and energy level were a good match for them,” says Cindy Dong
an admissions and placement specialist who processed Stella’s adoption
non-accidental fractures that had gone untreated
and shared how the Medical and Behavior teams had worked extensively with her
Stella arrived at the ASPCA Animal Hospital on October 29, 2024, limping on both hind legs. She had been abandoned at the NYPD 100th Precinct stationhouse in Queens two days before and was transferred to the ASPCA as part of our partnership with the NYPD
and resisted placing any weight on her hind legs,” says Dr
a forensic veterinarian who examined Stella
revealed bilateral chronic fractures — of the top of the right femur
Muscle atrophy was present in both legs due to their non-use and a bony callus was visible along the left thigh bone
“The images showed the left femur fracture was older than the right,” Dr
“Stella also had a chronic healed fracture of the right humerus — the upper arm bone between the shoulder and elbow.”
Stella underwent a right femoral head ostectomy
surgery to remove the right broken femur head
Her left femur fracture is considered a chronic malunion
which means it may never fully heal to complete resolution
Liu says Stella’s multiple bone fractures were the result of blunt force trauma
Stella weighed just 43.5 pounds on October 29
was attributed to malnutrition and muscle atrophy
Skin scars on her head were consistent with healed dog bite injuries
and she had a fracture of her right frontal forehead bone and her left cheekbone
Stella also suffered from fractured and missing teeth
a chronic traumatic injury to the tip of her tongue resulting in a partial amputation
Stella’s head is pockmarked with healed dog bite injuries
“Stella’s injuries were consistent with non-accidental trauma
often referred to as intentional abuse,” Dr
Stella’s medical care was funded in part by a generous grant from The Brady Hunter Foundation
a global non-profit dedicated to supporting animal welfare
Following directives from veterinarians in the Animal Recovery Center
licensed veterinary technicians focused on exercising her right hind leg after her surgery
“We started with a warm compress of her right hip
followed by a massage of her thigh muscles,” says Devon DeFrancesca
an LVT who handled Stella’s PT twice daily for over a month
“Her normal routine consisted of a passive range of motion of her entire leg
and a three-legged stand where we elevated her left hind leg to ensure she built up stability on her surgery leg.”
Stella avoided using both hind legs due to untreated fractures in those legs
Her condition was corrected with surgery and physical therapy
Devon encouraged her to stand up on her hind legs
supporting her front legs and letting her take a few steps forward and backward
She was most relaxed and willing to exercise if we started with a gentle approach and built up from there
We’d give her the bully stick at the outset
we moved forward with the warm compress and massage
“She was understandably timid at first, but we earned her trust by ensuring she was well rewarded,” Devon adds. “Fear-free techniques
positive reinforcement and classical conditioning all helped her cooperative care.”
Behavior experts stepped in to apply Stella’s next level of treatment
“Stella received an A grade for her sociability with people and ability to be handled,” says Sara Xing Eisenberg
“But she got a C for her dog test which concerned us.”
Despite being intensely aroused and vocal around other dogs
Stella learned to interact appropriately with other dogs
“She sounded aggressive but only scared other dogs,” says Sara. “It was off-putting and hard to find a ‘helper dog’ who would tolerate her
We wanted to gather more information to know if she was eligible for treatment and could relax
Stella refused to take high-value treats or toys with other dogs present
who taught Stella how to walk with and greet other dogs appropriately
“She pulled on her leash when passing other dogs
but nothing like during her initial dog-on-dog test.”
Stella was happily co-housed with another dog
but we needed to get to the bottom of her dog-on-dog behavior,” Sara says
“It was like peeling an onion to discover the nitty gritty
working Stella through calm and controlled exposures to other dogs
Stella is rarely alone for long periods as Rachel and Drew
“We thought it best to adopt in the middle of the school year,” says Rachel
Rachel and Drew introduced Stella to their parents’ dogs on Long Island and will take Stella hiking this summer
“She’s so easygoing and loves to be outside,” Rachel says
Although her old injuries sometimes cause stiffness — a fading reminder of difficult times — Stella now uses both hind legs well with minimal discomfort
proving that her past no longer interferes with the present
“We put in a lot of work to give each dog we treat the best possible chance,” says Sara

The intense battle between Norris and Verstappen in Miami has left fans on the edge of their seats
weighing in on the controversial racing incidents
The clash between the two drivers reignited memories of their rivalry in the 2024 season
with Norris struggling to keep up with the reigning world champion
Stella suggested that Norris should have shown more restraint during the race
indicating that it might have been wiser for him to bide his time rather than aggressively challenging Verstappen in the early stages
This perspective sheds light on a potential lack of composure from Norris in crucial moments
Stella addressed the incident where Norris took four laps to overtake Verstappen
The British driver was initially successful in passing his rival but was instructed by the team to relinquish the position due to exceeding track limits
emphasizing the importance of abiding by the rules to avoid penalties
The strategic insight provided by Stella offers a glimpse into the dynamics within the McLaren team and raises questions about Norris’ approach to high-pressure situations on the track
As the rivalry between Norris and Verstappen continues to escalate
all eyes will be on their future showdowns to see if any lessons have been learned from the intense Miami Grand Prix

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A new global study found evidence that dogs can understand and combine concepts and
The study
conducted by the University of California San Diego's Department of Cognitive Science
involved dogs using an innovative new strategy to facilitate communication between animals and humans - an array of buttons that each speak a different word when pressed
The researchers tracked button presses from dogs living in 47 different countries around the world to see if there was any real cohesion or understanding in the buttons they were pressing
or if they just realized pressing certain buttons resulted in certain actions being done
One of the most popular participants in the study is a Blue Heeler-Catahoula mix named Stella
whose owner has amassed a large following on TikTok by posting Stella's attempts at communication
One of the more impressive feats Stella accomplished occurred around the time of her daily beach trip
only the button she usually pressed for "beach" as missing
Stella pressed "help," "water," and "outside" one after another
implying that Stella could understand and combine concepts to create new ones
"She was able to generalize the concept of water from being just
water in my bowl' to water as a more general thing that can exist at the beach and be much larger than four inches in diameter," said Leo Trottier
the company that sells the communication buttons
Although much more research needs to be done to determine whether or not furry friends could actually be taught to communicate with humans or if Stella is just a particularly smart dog
the possibility that one day humans could "talk" to their dogs is undoubtedly interesting

playHow Oscar Piastri made history for McLaren in Bahrain (1:03)Take a look at the statistics behind Oscar Piastri's Bahrain Grand Prix win
Formula 1 leader Lando Norris was unsparingly self-critical after suffering setbacks in Bahrain at the weekend but McLaren principal Andrea Stella said the driver was being unfair on himself and taking blame for the team
who now leads Australian Piastri by three points
"Something's just not clicking with me and the car
I'm not able to do any of the laps like I was doing last season
"The car was just mega and that's helping me get out of a lot of problems at the minute
But I'm just nowhere near the capability that I have -- which hurts," he added
Andrea Stella has defended Lando Norris after he was self-critical during the Bahrain GP weekend. Mark Sutton - Formula 1/Formula 1 via Getty ImagesStella told reporters he admired Norris's open approach
wearing his heart on his sleeve rather than erecting a mental screen
"It is relatively unique how visible he is, how open he is," said the Italian, who worked with seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher at Ferrari
might go on about the problem being elsewhere
It is something important that I admire about Lando
and which makes me very privileged and lucky as team principal
that he absorbs the blame and points it at himself
not the team.' Which is entirely inaccurate
There were things we did that made Lando's life less easy
We know what they were technically," he added
Some other drivers as soon as there is a problem; 'Ah
had "an incredible race craft" and had simply hit a temporary phase of things not going to plan while pushing the car to its limits
it will just require a bit of adaptation from Lando himself and some adaptations from the team
but I think the understanding is good and we are very optimistic that this will be resolved."
Stella said McLaren always shared the blame and "we know that there's a few things we can do better to make Lando more comfortable in the car."
Norris conceded he was hard on himself but it was how he had always operated and it would be harder still not to show his feelings
a lot of it is probably just getting my frustration out
It's just because of not achieving what I want to achieve," he said
"When I know what I can do and what I'm capable of
and I'm not even close to reaching that ..
"Maybe sometimes I lack a bit of self-belief and I have done in the past
"And probably maybe at times has limited me from becoming a better driver ..
I think what I can do and what I can achieve is good enough and easily up there with the best."
Genuine musical epiphanies are rare.
Years ago while I was driving through the English countryside
Edward Elgar’s Serenade for Strings came on the radio
I felt that for the first time I completely understood this music—not just its national origin but the essence of the pastoralism
aching nostalgia and trace of melancholy that permeate not just this work
Elgar’s Serenade was heard as part of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert led by Dame Jane Glover Thursday night
Music director of Music of the Baroque since 2002
Glover was a spirited and assured podium presence as she led a lightish
Essentially English program of works for chamber orchestra
But the spotlight was seized by violinist Stella Chen in a most impressive CSO downtown debut
Chen is subbing this week for the originally slated Robert Chen (no relation) who was back in his concertmaster chair Thursday night. The soloist, who has made regular appearances with the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra and other regional ensembles
First up was The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughan Williams
This celebrated work is regarded by many as the epitome of the English pastoral school of music—or
Yet there is an eloquence and affecting weight of meaning beneath the surface of this outwardly simple work
beautifully played portrait of the title avian in this postwar work
the violinist played the softer sections with lovely tone
often winnowing her sound down to a barely audible thread
Chen’s final solo—as the lark takes wing and recedes into the distance—was magical and utterly beguiling
her violin fading almost imperceptibly to silence
Too bad a loud cough had to spoil the violinist’s hushed concluding solo Thursday night—the worst of several moments from a noisy and restive Orchestra Hall audience
it’s February in Chicago but if you can’t control your cough without disrupting a performance you should stay home
Glover and the ensemble provided Chen with attentive
the British conductor giving her room to phrase freely and pointing up the contrast of the folk-like middle section
Elgar’s Serenade for Strings led off the evening
While the outer movements conveyed the score’s amiably relaxed lyricism
the deeper waters of the central Larghetto proved less successful— cool in expression and undone by Glover’s fussy over-moulding of the arching lines.
The prevailing mood of rustic introspection was dispelled by Benjamin Britten’s Suite on English Folk Tunes “A time there was …”
Britten’s final work for orchestra (1974) retools several folk tunes and country dances in five sections
While Britten’s sardonic arrangements feel a bit self-conscious at times
Glover led a lively and boisterous account with worthy solo contributions from harpist Julie Smith Phillips and
long-breathed English horn solo in “Lord Melbourne” was the highlight of the Britten performance
Stella Chen returned after intermission to show another side of her artistry with Ravel’s Tzigane
Magyar-flavored showpiece was written for the Hungarian virtuoso Jelly d’Arányi
Tzigane opens with an extended violin solo that makes up half of its nine-minute span
which Chen played in an elegant and somewhat restrained manner
If the solo was a bit short on outsized gypsy swagger
Chen handled all of the dizzying minefields of the second half—slides
left-hand pizzicato and constant tempo gear-shifts—with flawless aplomb
her chinrest came loose and went flying noisily onto the stage
With Glover and the CSO lending equally high-stepping support
Chen tackled the concluding section’s fireworks with impressive polish and blazing bravura.
The evening closed with music of Franz Joseph Haydn
the “London,” would be the composer’s final work in a genre he largely created.
I have had mixed feelings about Glover’s Haydn performances with Music of the Baroque
finding them missing some of the composer’s earthy qualities as well as an essential humor.
Yet this CSO performance of Haydn’s symphonic swan song was first class in nearly every respect—vivacious in spirit and ideally balanced with a fine blend of tonal refinement and animal spirits.
The Adagio introduction of the opening movement was grandly scaled and the ensuing main Allegro went with crackling velocity
The slow movement was gracious and stately with the minor-key middle section nicely pointed by the British conductor
Likewise the vigorous ensuing Minuet was spelled by the folk-like strains of the Trio
The performance was rounded off with a wonderfully energetic finale
Glover steadily built the increasingly complex repetitions of Haydn’s simple four-note theme to a peak
and Vadim Karpinos’s dynamic timpani rolls accented the vitality en route to an exhilarating double bar
The week’s CSO concerts are dedicated to the memory of Eric Wicks
A member of the orchestra’s violin section for 38 years
Wicks passed away October 28 at the age of 89
The program will be repeated 1:30 p.m. Friday and 7:30 p.m. Saturday. cso.org

She graduated from Ben Lomond High School in 1962.
She was a beautician retired from Defense Depot Ogden
She lived in the Ogden area until moving to Minnesota in 2018
She loved being a dog mom and was often seen taking them on walks
Lynn (Marva) Yates of Ogden and Dennis (Shelly Yates of Hurricane
She was preceded in death by her husband and love of her life
Services entrusted to Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary.
Myrtle was a young girl during WWII—an event that left an indelible mark and did much to shape the attitudes
perspective and demeanor for the rest of her life
Myrtle vividly recalled memories of spending long nights in air raid shelters to escape the frequent German bombing raids on London
It was during these fright-filled nights that Myrtle first learned how to knit—a pastime she continued into later life
No doubt those nights also helped instill her unyielding strength
She never seemed to ever forget the wartime food rationing either
which helped cultivate her great appreciation for fine marmalade
and (to the chagrin of her children) her serving somewhat modest portions of food at mealtimes
and she taught at a number of schools before and in the early years after marrying Wyn John
Myrtle supported her husband throughout his career
when Wyn's work for 3M brought the family to Minnesota in 1975
Myrtle also supported Wyn throughout his two terms serving as mayor of Lake Elmo
and she was instrumental in Friends of Lake Elmo Library
the community organization that worked to save and successfully reopen the Lake Elmo Library in the mid 2000s
Helping to protect and preserve this valuable resource for future generations of Lake Elmo residents was an achievement of which Myrtle was justifiably proud
Myrtle's training as teacher was evident in her stern
approach to raising her four children (and also in managing her husband when it came to diet
Myrtle upheld those same high standards in her daily life
Myrtle had high expectations for all her children
but her overwhelming pride was evident whenever she had the opportunity to introduce any of them to her many friends and acquaintances
She also had a lifelong passion for tennis—playing well into her sixties—and continuing to follow Wimbledon
the US Open and other tournaments every year on TV
and always enjoyed a fine meal—especially when it was spent in the company of her children and their extended families—be it at the holidays or at summer barbecues by the lake
But if there was one thing she always insisted on (and as the servers at the Waters
Perkins and other local restaurants can attest)
it was having "bendy bacon" with her breakfast
Myrtle and Wyn lived on Grand Avenue in Saint Paul for many years before moving to the Waters in White Bear Lake
they enjoyed traveling around the United States
and to visit relatives and friends back in the UK
They also enjoyed going to the Guthrie Theater
the Ordway and attending various cultural events in Minneapolis and Saint Paul all year round
"She was a great lady." That was the overwhelming opinion shared by many people when they first learned of Myrtle's passing
A great lady who will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends—some who she knew for more than 50 years
and others she met more recently as she continued to get to know new arrivals at the Waters
Myrtle's family would like to thank Dr
April Abrahamson of Bluestone Physician Services for her ongoing help and support
the nurses at the Waters and Hospice of the Midwest for the wonderful care they gave Myrtle in her last days
as well as all the Waters staff and residents for the touching send-off they gave Myrtle after she passed

presented by the University Libraries in collaboration with the Center for Judaic Studies
It is on display now through April 7 in Anderson Academic Commons (AAC)
Stella (1936-2024) was an influential 20th century modern artist known for abstract art that pushed boundaries with its use of color and movement to explore narrative
His work has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York

The series was inspired by the work of Russian artist El Lissitzky
who created a series of drawings based on the centuries-old Passover song

On January 29, Sarah Lawrence first-year Stella Sturgill ’28 appeared on The Today Show to discuss her work with the podcast “This Teenage Life”
a youth dialogue and podcasting program that features the voices of approximately 50 teenagers from around the world
Stella first discovered the podcast as a high school freshman while searching for accessible and engaging news sources
She was drawn to its unique mix of cultural topics — like the 2020 election and climate change — and personal conversations about friendship
“The podcast immediately resonated because I could envision my own experience listening to the stories,” Stella said
“The episodes were authentic windows into other teens’ experiences.” After listening to every episode
eventually writing and producing two of her own episodes
The values that drew Stella to the podcast — curiosity, authenticity, and community — also shaped her approach to the college search and athletic recruitment process. “I really wanted to play soccer in college, but the recruitment process can be arduous,” Stella said. “When I met Coach Grillo at Sarah Lawrence
I immediately felt how much he cares about his athletes
Then I learned about SLC’s conference projects and close faculty-student relationships
This is what experiential learning should look like.”
Stella has deepened her friendships with the podcast’s NYC-based contributors and found new ways to apply her skills
She’s using her interview experience for conference projects and hopes to integrate her passion for storytelling into her coursework in health and wellness
coeducational liberal arts college that consistently ranks among the leading liberal arts colleges in the country

playMax Verstappen wins fourth consecutive Japanese GP (0:56)Take a look at the incredible numbers behind Verstappen's fourth consecutive Japanese GP victory
Japan -- McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has defended his team's strategy calls at the Japanese Grand Prix
including the decision not to swap its drivers at the end of the race
Verstappen won from pole position at Suzuka after soaking up 53 laps of pressure from Lando Norris in second place and Oscar Piastri in third
Piastri radioed the team to say he had more performance to unleash to attack Verstappen if Norris moved out of his way
Similar situations in the past have seen teams swap their drivers under the condition that the unleashed driver gives the position back if it is unable to pass the rival car
But ultimately McLaren opted against swapping its drivers as it felt Piastri was not better placed than Norris to attack
"I don't think it is so clear that Oscar was faster," Stella said
"I think Lando was trying to get in Max's slipstream or even closer
but any time you went below one second [of the car in front]
"So then Lando was doing a little bit of an 'elastic' today
I don't think it is a situation that we should judge at face value in terms of what the pace of the car was
"Lando was trying to get close to Verstappen with maximum momentum
It was something we knew right from the start that on this track you need 0.7-0.8 seconds of performance advantage in order to be able to overtake."
Max Verstappen has caught up to Lando Norris in the championship
just one point behind. Kym Illman/Getty ImagesAnother option McLaren did not explore was to pit Norris before Verstappen to try to make use of the performance of fresher tyres to "undercut" the Red Bull
Piastri pitted on Lap 20 to fend off a similar undercut from George Russell
before Norris and Verstappen both pitted on Lap 21
When Stella was asked why McLaren gave the benefit of an early pit stop to Piastri over Norris
he said it was to protect the team's overall result and because an early pit stop would have left Norris vulnerable to losing positions in the event of a safety car
"I think pitting Lando would have meant that we could not have pitted Oscar and this would have been a problem for Oscar," Stella said
which I think would have been a problem with the cars
"We will review the gaps [between the drivers at the time of the pit stops] to understand whether there was a possibility to go for an undercut with Lando that could actually be executed on Max
that by giving up track position you also expose the car that you pit to safety car risk
Like Lando would have lost positions in a safety car should a safety car be deployed
but an undercut attempt comes with some risks
"It was apparent that the degradation was low
so I think if you lose position with a safety car
I don't think we could have overtaken a Ferrari or a Mercedes today."
After Norris missed out on pole position by 0.012 seconds on Saturday and Piastri by 0.44 seconds
Stella said the core reason for the result could be traced to incredibly small margins in qualifying
"I'm sure our two drivers will have commented themselves that their qualifying laps were not the best laps in qualifying in their careers
you need to nail laps in qualifying and you need to bring home any possible millisecond
with 0.043-0.045 seconds between P3 and P1
I think the qualifying laps yesterday in Q3 were even more of a determinant factor than anything that happened today in the race."
