TEHRAN - In a landmark archaeological breakthrough
Iranian researchers have discovered what is believed to be the long-lost quarry used to source the massive stones for Achaemenid-era masterpieces such as the palace of Darius the Great in the ancient city of Susa
The site was found near the city of Abdanan in Ilam province
and is being hailed as one of the most significant archaeological discoveries in West Asia in recent years
head of Iran's Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism
announced the discovery during an official visit to Abdanan on Friday
the origin of the stones used in Darius's palace remained a mystery
This discovery is astonishing and could solve a 2,000-year-old historical puzzle," he said
The monumental find was made possible through the efforts of a local teacher
and archaeologist Luqman Ahmadzadeh-Shohani
operating under the Institute's Archaeology Department
and geological studies to identify extensive remnants of ancient quarrying operations
Among the findings were stone-cutting tools
and significant quantities of limestone and iron ore
which may have been used in crafting metal joints for Achaemenid stone architecture
Historical references to a site named “Abiradush” — mentioned in inscriptions by Darius I as the source of stones for the Apadana Palace — had long intrigued scholars
The newly identified quarry in the Kabir Kuh mountains near Abdanan matches the descriptions and is believed to be the fabled Abiradush
“The Apadana Palace in Susa is one of the most majestic royal structures of ancient Iran
Identifying the true origin of its building materials opens a new chapter in our understanding of Achaemenid construction logistics
The research team estimates the distance from the quarry site to Susa at roughly 150 kilometers
The stones were likely transported via a complex route combining mountainous roads and riverways
Archaeologists are hopeful that this find will lead not only to a deeper understanding of the Achaemenid Empire’s engineering and architectural achievements but also to the potential nomination of the site for UNESCO World Heritage status
The discovery could spark new avenues in cultural tourism and sustainable heritage development in the central Zagros region
Although detailed studies are ongoing and more visual documentation is expected to be released
the discovery has already drawn comparisons to the famed Pentelic marble quarries used in building the Parthenon in Athens
This is not the first Achaemenid quarry to be identified in Iran
archaeologists uncovered large-scale stone extraction sites near Pasargadae
including the extensive “Almas-Bori” quarry and others used for building foundational and decorative elements in royal structures
Experts believe that continued research into these ancient quarrying systems will further illuminate the sophisticated techniques employed by Achaemenid builders — from the extraction of 2- to 50-ton stone blocks
and eventual polishing using date palm fibers and sharkskin
The UNESCO-registered Susa was once the winter residence of Persian kings after having been captured by Cyrus the Great
Susa became part of the Persian Empire under Cyrus II
Various archaeological seasons in Susa have yielded ample relics including pottery
Susa is also a gateway to several worthy destinations such as the UNESCO-tagged ziggurat of Tchogha Zanbil
Situated in the lower Zagros mountain range
Susa is identified as Shushan in the Book of Esther and other Biblical books
follow the self-guided signage past date palms into the excavation site of the 521 BC Palace of Darius
an area of deep excavations through 15 strata; south of the castle is an eroded earthen watchtower overlooking teenagers riding dirt bikes
Dominating the landscape on the right is the fortress-like Chateau de Morgan (Shush Castle)
built on the bones of an Elamite acropolis by the French in the early 20th century to protect their loot from marauding tribesmen
but there are fine views from the path around the base
including a view of the Tomb of Daniel from the southern side
Susa is known primarily from the story of Esther in which Haman the Agagite planned to defeat the Jews of Persia
Esther outwitted him by persuading her husband
The episode is commemorated every year in the Jewish Purim festival which is marked with costumed parties and other celebrations
It is said that Alexander of Macedonia captured Susa in 330 BC and plundered the city
seizing some 40,000 talents of gold and silver from the treasury
Alexander initiated Shushan’s decline by favoring Babylon and shortly after
Subsequently rebuilt by Sapor II (309-379 CE)
it was renamed Iranshahr Shapur and later helped in the resistance against the Arab invasion of 645
After the fall of the Achaemenid Empire and the reign of Alexander the Great
the city became part of the Seleucid empire
where nearly all Greek and Parthian inscriptions were discovered

lamenting that the city has become more of a transit point for visitors heading to neighboring destinations rather than a primary attraction
It was red brick with a big picture window and a pasture out front where their horses could graze
The lump she’d found just two years earlier had metastasized
In the beginning doctors cut off both breasts
removing any fragments of the disease that they could
A hospital bed in Angie’s new living room allowed her to watch the horses graze from the picture window
quietly building Legos and trying to process what was happening around him
Horses are responsible for some of my dearest friendships
We both volunteered for a local equine rescue
doing evaluation rides on new intakes and training rides to prepare horses for adoption
tech savvy and a gifted photographer with a company she named after her first horse
ran the rescue’s website and documented the horses’ rehabilitation journeys.
Everything about Angie was big: her personality
She swore like a sailor but baby-talked her horses
“I’ll be crapping myself all morning from the *bleeping* chemo
but let’s get lunch then go take some pics of Coyote for the website!”
It wasn’t long after Angie and I met that she took me to meet her own herd at an old stone barn she rented so she could care for them herself
Ella and Blue were mother and son; Angie’s husband claimed Blue as his trail mount and always stood out on the blue-eyed
Angie’s friend Cortney was retraining Ella
and Angie beamed with a matronly pride when Cortney showed the mare for the first time
Our work at the rescue blended easily into friendship
I—a teacher with summers off—was regularly driving her to chemo appointments so her husband didn’t have to take time away from work
We’d call them “working chemos” and in her room at the hospital I’d write horse updates for the rescue while she worked on the website
the Benadryl cocktail they’d drip through the port in her chest would hit
I’d settle in with a book or some work of my own
and we’d stop at her favorite Japanese restaurant on the way home.
Chemo stopped working and the cancer spread shortly after Angie and her husband closed on their house
They’d put up temporary fencing for the horses
but there was no extra to build a barn before winter
A group of friends planned a spaghetti dinner fundraiser to raise money toward a barn for Angie’s horses
Boarders and students from Cortney’s barn offered to cook
and her lesson students would serve the food
Friends and businesses donated more raffle baskets than we could store in one person’s home
A few days before the dinner was scheduled
and taking regular doses of morphine that her mother would administer through a dropper onto Angie’s tongue.
While she dozed in her bed in the living room
scrubbing their coats with shampoo and conditioning manes and tails
When we tried to get Angie into her wheelchair
She couldn’t even sit without support.
So we wheeled her hospital bed over to that picture window
I sat on the windowsill next to Angie’s bed with a bucket of peppermints
luring the horses to the window with the crinkle of wrappers
reaching each treat toward the horse in the window
We didn’t know she had so little time left
I got the call that she was gone three days later
as I unlocked my high school classroom’s door
Angie’s fundraiser was scheduled for Sunday
in the funeral home just blocks from the fire hall
Before the doors opened for the fundraiser
a dozen of us walked from the fire hall to the funeral home to see our friend
Someone made matching shirts for the fundraiser—hot pink ribbons on a black background—and my heart caught in my throat when I walked up to her casket and saw Angie dressed in hers
joking about how dorky we were in our matching outfits
and how glad we were that her bald head was covered by a bandana rather than the itchy wig she hated
We noticed that she wasn’t wearing her bra with the sewn-in prosthetic boobs
it went missing for a few days and she found it in the freezer when we were on our way to chemo
then she hung it on the coat rack on our way out the door.)
and then we said goodbye to Angie and walked back down the street to the firehall to scoop meatballs and sell raffle tickets to all the people who loved our friend
The fundraiser brought in over $20,000 that night
We delivered the money after the funeral the following day to Angie’s husband and son
They built a little barn for her horses and cared for them for the next few years
But Angie’s guys weren’t really horse people; it was her love of horses that had fueled their own riding
and they decided it was time to find new homes for the horses
each horse carefully placed and protected through contracts from the horse rescue that she’d helped found and run.
the first pony for her new little daughter
But if Penelope would get more attention at my farm
I hooked up the trailer and drove to Cortney’s farm
We were both teary-eyed as Cortney said goodbye
has been with us for a little over a year now
and it’s hard to remember life without her.
She lives in a little open stall in the center of the barn
nipping at anyone who dares walk past without a pet
She bosses around her two full-sized pasturemates
Our instructor has been teaching her liberty work
which she loves; she’ll trot behind Meagan over poles or little crossrails
then nuzzle her for treats or pats when she’s done
Our teenage students call her “P-Dawg,” and one taught her to navigate trail obstacles
showing her successfully in-hand this season
students fight over whose turn it is to hold her
and they walk her around the show grounds like a dog.
but Pen-o-pee is my fave-wit.” He rides his bike down the aisle to her stall where she’ll nuzzle his face
zigzagging distractedly across the yard with her in tow
learning now that a cluck will make her walk and a very dramatic “whooooooooaaaaahhhhh” will make her stop
“Pen-o-pee wants to dig with me,” as he scoops up shavings with a tiny little toy excavator in front of her stall as she sniffs his head
we crack the hallway window so he can yell
He’ll never remember life before her.
This fall marks eight years since we lost Angie
and it’s harder to hear her voice or see her face in my mind.
But fall brings her back to us all: She was born and she died in the fall
October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month
and every pink ribbon will forever remind me of her.

A consortium of 12 European universities has embarked on an ambitious project to better prepare health workers for a digital future
The initiative, Sustainable Healthcare with Digital Health Data Competence, or Susa for short, was launched in January with €12.4mn of funding from the EU’s Digital Europe programme. It covers the education of doctors and nurses through bachelors and masters degrees, and life-long learning for established health professionals.
Minna Isomursu, Susa project leader and professor at the University of Oulu in Finland, calls it “a pivotal moment for European healthcare education”.
“We are creating a workforce that can harness digital health data to revolutionise patient care, improve efficiency and contribute to a more sustainable and equitable healthcare system,” she says.
If they don’t have the skills, the technologies will not be used, however beautiful they seem
Digital healthcare already spans a vast and varied range of applications. They include: computer examination of X-ray scans using artificial intelligence to detect abnormalities; mobile apps for people to monitor themselves for medical conditions; distant health counselling through text messaging; and electronic recording by doctors and nurses of patient notes using voice recognition.
Susa was born out of Isomursu’s research on integrating digital technologies into care pathways. “I found that one of the main obstacles was that health professionals lacked the required skills and competencies,” she says. “If they don’t have the skills, the technologies will not be used, however beautiful they seem.”
A parallel problem, Isomursu suggests, is that “digital technologies are currently developed by engineers and technologists without healthcare professionals, who are not involved because they lack the required competencies. This is slowing down the innovation process because health workers are not involved from the beginning.”
Susa’s 12 partner universities in nine countries will put digital skills at the heart of 20 bachelors and 26 masters programmes, aiming to produce 6,558 graduates by the end of the four-year project. There will also be 16 life-long learning modules to make 660 mid-career professionals proficient in digital healthcare.
Minna Isomursu (right) and Corinna Uhr at Oulu University in Finland The need for better targeted and more extensive digital training is felt throughout the health sector, public and private, says Lynne Green, a consultant clinical psychologist and chief clinical officer at Kooth, a UK-based company providing digital mental support to young people. She welcomes the launch of Susa.
“There isn’t a clear academic pathway for people working in digital health tech,” Green says. “When people come to us, we do our own digital health training. But we want to take that to the next level and get some accredited training with an academic institution that many people can access.”
Our biggest challenge is building rapport and relationships in a digital setting
Mental health practitioners often find it hard to move from traditional face-to-face or telephone counselling to text-based digital interactions on mobile phones, says Green. “You cannot just transfer the skills,” she adds. “We may have to retrain staff in some of the basics — how to engage with someone digitally.”
Mastering the technology itself is not the most important issue in preparing health workers for the digital age, because people can learn the technicalities of operating the system with relative ease, Green adds: “Our biggest challenge is building rapport and relationships in a digital setting.”
In the Susa EU project, the emphasis will vary according to the subject matter. For nursing programmes, digital interactions with patients may be most important, says Isomursu. On the other hand, biomedical engineering students developing a new device have no direct connection with patients and need to focus on the technology of measuring a biological signal. But they still need to know how health professionals will use the device in the clinic.
The Susa consortium is building its educational materials around “20 learning objectives that are essential advanced digital skills for all health professionals working with health data regardless of their disciplinary background.” Five of Susa’s learning objectives focus on artificial intelligence, including its ethics, regulation and technology — an area largely missing from today’s courses.
Susa will share the materials developed during the programme, not only within the original group of 12 founding institutions but also with other universities that have already expressed an interest in joining the project, says Isomursu.
At Kooth, Green advocates teaching an attitude of “cautious enthusiasm” while exercising restraint towards applying AI.
“It’s not going away so we need people with experience to see how we can use it effectively, safely and with really good governance,” she argues.
“There are certainly areas in which AI brings real benefits, for example in summarising case notes and helping clinicians with administrative tasks so they can get on with things they are trained to do with patients,” she adds. “But we’re not going down the chatbot route [in digital therapy] any time soon . . . You do need to have a human with experience to oversee what the computer is doing.”

Susa comprises a group of artificial archaeological mounds rising on the eastern side of the Shavur River
as well as the remains of Artaxerxes' palace on the other side of the Shavur River
Susa developed as early as the late 5th millennium BCE as an important centre
administrative and political hub that enjoyed different cultural influences thanks to its strategic position along ancient trade routes
Archaeological research can trace in Susa the most complete series of data on the passage of the region from prehistory to history
Susa appears as the converging point of two great civilisations which reciprocally influenced each other: the Mesopotamian and the Iranian plateau civilisations
Susa’s long-lasting and prominent role in the region
or as a strategic centre sought by neighbouring powers (e.g.
Sassanid) is witnessed by the abundant finds
of disparate provenance and of exceptional artistic or scientific interest
as well as functional structures and traces of urban layout (e.g.
the remains of the Haute Terrasse in the Acropolis
the Ardeshir Palace) that more than 150 years of archaeological investigations have revealed
Criterion (i): Susa stands as one of the few ancient sites in the Middle East where two major social and cultural developments took place: the development of the early state
Susa is among the few sites in the Middle East where the dynamics and processes that led to these monumental human achievements has been documented
and still holds a huge body of important tangible evidence to understand better the early and mature stages of social
Susa contributed to the development of urban planning and architectural design
The royal ensemble of the Palace of Darius and Apadana
lofty stone columns and gigantic capitals and column bases
and the orthostatic and ceramic wall decorations
together represent an innovative contribution to the creation of a new expression
Criterion (ii): The proto-urban and urban site of Susa bears testimony
from the late 5th millennium BCE to the first millennium CE
resulting from ancient trade connections and cultural exchanges between different civilizations
Susa has been identified as the focal point of interaction and intersection between the nomadic and sedentary cultures
It played a key role in creating and expanding technological knowledge
architectural and town planning concepts in the region
Through its sustained interaction with nearby regions
archaeological and architectural materials discovered at Susa exhibit a variety of styles and forms
shedding light on an international ancient city that both influenced and was imitated by its neighbours
Criterion (iii): The remains of the ancient city of Susa bear exceptional testimony to successive ancient civilizations during more than six millennia
as well as having been the capital city of the Elamite and Achaemenid Empires
It contains 27 layers of superimposed urban settlements in a continuous succession from the late 5th millennium BCE until the 13th century CE
where the processes of urbanization crystallized in the late 5th millennium BC
A decade of scientific excavations from 1968 to 1978
also documented the development and changing character of this early urban centre throughout the millennia
Criterion (iv): Susa is an outstanding and rare example of a type of urban settlement representing the beginnings of urban development in the proto-Elamite and Elamite periods
as the administrative capital city of the Achaemenid Empire
Susa contributed to the creation of a new prototype of ceremonial architecture
which became a characteristic feature of the Iranian Plateau and its neighbouring lands
The excavated site of the ancient urban and architectural remains of Susa is included within the boundaries of the property
Even though many of the finds are today exhibited in museums
Susa still includes the essential elements to express its Outstanding Universal Value
The property covers the known part of the ancient city

although many of the decorative elements are now deposited in museums for protection
Susa is being conserved using scientific and philological methods and approaches
the excavated remains have been stabilized and conserved respecting their architectural and planning design as well as their building materials
From its initial formation and in the course of its development until its final decline
Susa has always remained on its present site; its environmental setting has

Walsh Jesuit senior Natalie Susa is the cleveland.com Softball Player of the Year
.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Matt Goul, cleveland.comCLEVELAND
Ohio — Natalie Susa had to watch last year as her Walsh Jesuit softball teammates played without her
recovering from a knee injury suffered early in the 2023 season
The Minnesota recruit spent a full year rehabilitating her ACL
able to pitch in the preseason before finally being cleared to hit in May — a year to the day
“I was happy I was able to pitch,” Susa said after Walsh Jesuit’s season ended against defending OHSAA Division I state champion Austintown Fitch
Susa returned to the circle in dominant fashion
leading the Warriors to an undefeated regular season and the No
1 ranking in the Ohio High School Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association state poll and now being selected as the cleveland.com Softball Player of the Year
She pitched 102 innings with 187 strikeouts to just 24 walks and a 1.09 earned-run average
“She was kind of our rock this year,” coach Tony Scibelli said
“We all see the stuff she does in the circle
but it’s really what she does as a leader and a student-athlete
Just having that back was a really big bonus for us.”
Susa credited her teammates for giving her the motivation in the last year during her comeback
“Going to practice really was what I looked forward to because I knew every day they would check in on me and text me,” she said
‘How did that check up go?’ They would ask me where I’m at
I wanted to be excited to tell them good news.”
When Susa started pitching again last winter
she would throw 50 pitches and gradually work her way up
starting with just base running before finally being able to hit again in time for the postseason
While Walsh missed reaching the state final four in Akron
only one other team (Buckeye) among teams in the cleveland.com coverage area reached the Elite Eight in any of the OHSAA’s four divisions
“I think our year together was the best it’s ever been,” Susa said
but there’s nothing I ever want to change about how this year went.”
Meet the full cleveland.com all-area softball team below

YOUNGSTOWN — The next game for the Walsh Jesuit softball team needs no introduction
but we’re going to hype the heck out of it anyways
It’s the game softball fans have dreamt about since the brackets came out and it’ll happen Friday when the Warriors face Austintown Fitch in a Division I regional final
Walsh advanced to the regional final with a 10-0 five-inning win over Painesville Riverside in Wednesday's second game
after Fitch outlasted Amherst Steele 2-1 in nine innings in the opener
“I can’t tell you the number of people who have reached out to me from outside our area in Columbus
we’re coming,'” Walsh coach Tony Scibelli said
You’re talking about two teams with tons of talent who have been there before
I think it’s going to be standing room only
It’s a Division I regional final rematch from 2023 that the Falcons won 11-1
Fitch is the reigning state champion
Walsh finished the season ranked first in the state coaches poll
The Warriors are ranked ninth in the nation in the USA Today Super 25
The Falcons are ranked 10th
which just beat Aurora and is in a Division II regional final
“It would really be huge if we could win that one,” Walsh second baseman Brianna Wise said
“It’s been eight years since Walsh has seen state for softball
I think we have the momentum for the next two.”
Walsh pitcher Natalie Susa (13-0), who was injured for last season’s loss to Fitch, will pitch for the Warriors and is headed to Minnesota next season
Sydnie Watts (20-1), who did pitch against Walsh, will go for the Falcons and is headed to Georgia Tech in 2025
Susa is coming off a two-hitter in which she struck out 12 in five innings
Watts is coming off a two-hitter in which she struck out 17 in nine innings
“When I was listening to (former UCLA coach) Sue Enquist speak one time
she said that the game doesn’t know that it’s a big game,” Susa said
That’s always stuck with me because whether it’s a big game or a game where we’re leading comfortably
staying collected and remembering that it’s just a game like we’ve been playing well is the key
“It would be everything to get to Firestone Stadium (for the state tournament)
Fitch looked like it was moving on in the eighth when it scratched across a run
but Amherst Steele's Kayla Rhodes hit a monster home run high off the left-field pole to keep things going
Kalaina Ray singled in Samantha Severn in the top of the ninth to push the Falcons to victory
Walsh blitzed Riverside (20-10) for four runs in the first and coasted to the victory with Sienna Tepley (2-for-2
“Since our sophomore year we’ve wanted to beat them and we’ve come up short
We’ve been looking forward to this and have had this in the back of our mind
This secretly is what we’ve been working for
Fellow senior Susa is part of that excitement and proved it in her win over the Beavers
It was the second time this season Susa has beaten Riverside
and she struck out a combined 27 batters in 12 innings in those wins
“I told the girls going into the first inning
I think being able to score early in a vital game helps me stay calm because I know I have the offense.”

It starts tonight (20,30pm) play-off for third place, there is the champions league in the next season. The Sir Susa Vim Perugia tries to stay among the nobles, to do so he has to beat the Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza which has been missing from the tournament for some time. For those who cannot be at Pian di Massiano there is still the possibility of following the match which will be broadcast live streaming on the Vbtv platform and also on Dazn.
It is the coach Angelo Lorenzetti who introduces the clash: "The volleyball that Piacenza expressed in the semifinal is certainly of a high level and we have to measure ourselves with that. I told the boys that there is no reason why Piacenza, psychologically speaking, should be easier to play this match here, there is no reason why Piacenza should be more motivated, it is a clash of equals, therefore, it is up to us to interpret this match at our best".
Among the locals, there is curiosity to see if Japanese spiker Yuki Ishikawa will be among the starters. The Emilians have rested much more having lost the semifinal in three games and coach Ljubomir Travica may have recharged his team's batteries properly. Among the guests, an increasingly important role is played by Turkish spiker Ramazan Efe Mandiraci who has earned his place.
There are fifteen precedents between the two teams in official matches, thirteen of which were won by the block-devils and two by the Emilians. Three former players in this challenge, among the Umbrian ranks Davide Candellaro, in the opposing roster Gianluca Galassi and Fabio Ricci. Referees: Marco Zavater (RM) and Vincenzo Carcione (RM).
: Giannelli - Ben Tara, Solé - Loser, Semeniuk - Plotnytskyi, Colaci (L). PIACENZA: Brizard - Romanò, Simon - Galassi, Mandiraci - Maar, Scanferla (L).
In these few days that separate the Sir Susa Vim Perugia from Game 2, the Juventus coach Angelo Lorenzetti will continue to work with the boys on both the technical and mental aspects: "There is still the technical aspect to take care of in these days, that's for sure, then each of us must ask ourselves "who wants to be there" and once you have given the answer you have to take the actions to be who you want to be".
There’s a small foster-based horse rescue in the Pittsburgh area called Flying Changes Equine Rescue
I’ve been on the board of directors for almost a decade and often foster rescue horses
our students will ride the foster horses in lessons
excited to play a role in each horse’s journey
We’re transparent with our students about these horses
We hang a stall sign with the rescue’s logo on the stall door
and are our students are invested in their care
We celebrate when fosters leave us for their new families
though those goodbyes are always bittersweet.
is a 12-year-old bay Thoroughbred who raced until he was 9
retiring sound with some to-be-expected arthritis in his knees and fetlocks
He’s blind in his left eye from a track injury
but his limited sight doesn’t bother him on the ground or under saddle
When his first and only post-track owner fell on hard times
she surrendered him to keep him safe.
She’s a solid little rider and a really great kid.
and many of our students—perhaps Kenzie the most—have fallen in love with his kind eye
and the way he twists himself into a pretzel to nuzzle them for a treat.
Once we started posting information about him online
a woman named Helen reached out to the rescue with interest
grassy pastures and was searching for a new partner to ride over the property’s rolling hills.
we were excited: Helen could be I.Q.’s perfect person
we didn’t want to place him with a rider who might push him too hard or ask too much
would help keep him sound and healthy for years to come.
When Kenzie came for her lesson two weeks ago
and her lip quivered just a little—and suddenly I was 10 again
sobbing into the mane of a pony that I loved
A swaybacked bay with four knee-high socks and a fat blaze
and he took care of me more than any other equine ever has
The lease was $60 a month and granted me limitless access to “my” pony
I’d have moved a cot and sleeping bag right into the corner of his stall in the barn that was just less than a half-mile away from my childhood home
The run-down wooden structure housed half a dozen dark
musty stalls and a spider-webbed feed room
but it smelled of hay and sweet feed and horses
My best friend at the time was a girl named Annie
when we met—but age doesn’t matter when horses are the common denominator.
I was still expected to fulfill the obligations of leasing. One night a week
I brought in a half-dozen horses in from the pasture and served them dinner
It was also my job to strip P.J.’s stall once a week
and I’d toss heavy shovelfuls of soiled bedding into a rickety wheelbarrow and wrestle it to the manure pile beside the barn
and the shovel would catch the broken boards of the rotting wood floor
On cold winter days Annie and I would fling frozen turds over the stall partitions like grenades
doubling over with laughter at the other’s shrieks
Lisa’s parents lived on the same road as the barn in our little Pittsburgh suburb
Lisa drove in and stayed with her parents so she could teach her motley crew of students in the flat expanse of dirt behind the barn
lapping the arena in two-point or without stirrups
and Nezzie in water we hauled in buckets from the creek in the pasture
tying them to the hitching post in front of the barn to dry in the sunshine
and a white collared shirt that was most definitely NOT a ratcatcher)
we’d trail ride the half hour to the local show arena
where the $20 in our pockets would cover our show fees and snacks from the concession stand
studying the more advanced riders from the backs of our ponies after our morning walk/trot classes were done
When we weren’t in rigorous training for the cross-rails division
Annie and I also rode all through the county park across the road from the barn
to gallop the fairgrounds’ dirt track or jump the 6-inch balance beams of the park’s fitness trail as if they were cross-country fences
is the reason I escaped that childhood unharmed
I hung up the bridle I was holding and crouched down in front of her
since you’ve been so awesome at helping to get him back in shape.”
“Remember how the vet said that’s arthritis
It wouldn’t be fair to ask him to be a full-time lesson horse
or to learn to jump with only one good eye,” I continued
The right thing to do is to find him someone who will love him and ride him lightly but often
so he stays in good shape and feels good.”
“You riding him is so important,” I told her
You’re helping us to figure out what he likes to do
Her voice wobbled. “Will he still be here next week?”
for almost two years when Annie told me he was leaving
“Lisa bought a farm in Ohio,” Annie said nonchalantly one Saturday morning as we shoveled stalls
My parents said I can start looking for my own horse!”
Lisa hadn’t said anything at our last lesson the week prior
I didn’t even know she was looking for a farm
my mother drove me to the barn to say goodbye
my mom ushered me into the back seat of our station wagon so I wouldn’t have to watch P.J
I cried myself to sleep—not little sniffles
body-shaking sobs that left my head pounding and my heart drained
questioned whether to let me continue with horses
if I even decided I wanted to look for a new place to ride
That pony was this awkward little girl’s best friend
That little girl’s heartbreak is as real now as it was back then
In the aisleway of a barn I could never have imagined owning as a child
I put my hands on Kenzie’s shoulders and gave her a little shake.
I’d never do that to you!” I said
and when he was ready to be adopted
I promised her that the horse she was growing to love would never just disappear.
“We’ll all have plenty of time to say goodbye,” I assured her
it means that we can help the next horse who needs us
and the corner of her mouth rose in an almost-smile.
“But now I have to see what saddle pad he wants to wear today.”
on the last few weeks of a month’s-long shoulder injury rehabilitation
While the two groomed his dark bay coat together
Kenzie eased out of her shell to chat with Helen about the horse
I could see Helen try to hide a smile as she asked Kenzie to tell her more
snapping some pictures on her phone after asking Kenzie’s permission
Helen praised the girl’s riding and thanked Kenzie for allowing her to watch the lesson.
She loved him and stayed for an hour after her ride
brushing out his tail and feeding him treats.
After a few more visits and a few weeks of planning
met my trailer at the end of the driveway.
Everyone—especially those who have been riding him—had plenty of time to say goodbye and wish him well
We had celebratory cookies in the barn the week before his move
We posted photos to our social media accounts of him in his new home
with his new “mom” and new Appaloosa buddy and his rolling green fields
and an empty stall awaits its next occupant who needs our care
There are lots of reasons that a horse moves on: stepping up or stepping down
or an owner buys some land and fulfills a dream of bringing horses home
especially those in barns with a lot of horses coming and going
horses moving on may seem like no big deal.
Remember how much a horse can mean to a child
give them plenty of time to say goodbye.
and has no idea what you mean by the concept of free time.

YOUNGSTOWN – An already incredible culture became that much better this season with a Walsh Jesuit softball senior class that won’t ever be forgotten
Although the Warriors lost 8-2 to reigning state champion Austintown Fitch in a Division I regional final at Youngstown State University on Friday
the memories will linger for decades to come
Sienna Tepley and Zoey Schmitt came to Walsh ready to make the Warriors great
They leave making the Warriors (22-1) nearly impeccable
“They leave a great legacy,” Walsh coach Tony Scibelli said
“There was a certain culture when they came
They’ve definitely made this program what it is.”
What it will be in 2025 is a team with a bar left very high by the 22-1 Warriors of 2024
That senior class reached a district final all four seasons
won three of them and reached the regional final twice
That it took the Falcons (21-1) and Georgia Tech commit Sydnie Watts to beat them last season and this season shows just how special Walsh was
“I couldn’t have asked for more,” Wise said
even when I’m four hours away at Cincinnati next year
It’s a senior class that leaves with a 73-15 career record and having never lost a Crown Conference game
it’s a class that showed everyone how to play the game the right way
“We didn’t even have to try for it,” Susa said
Just loving each other off the field translated to the field
Susa was quick to point out that every class contributed to the culture
A usually stoic Scibelli choked up a bit during the postgame speech
Juniors Caleigh Shaulis and McKayla McGee know the baton has been passed to them to continue greatness
“The seniors brought major talent and major positivity to the dugout,” Shaulis said
I want to create a culture next year that’s the same
Fitch showed exactly why it's headed back to Firestone Stadium to play Fairfield
The Falcons held a 3-0 lead before the floodgates opened in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run home run by Kylie Folkwein followed by a no-doubt homer to center by Watts.
Fitch finished with 13 hits and scored seven of its eight runs with two outs
Watts (21-1) showed why she’s headed to Georgia Tech with a four-hitter
The right-hander finished with 13 strikeouts and walked six but showed poise to get out of jams
“She was locating the ball really well,” Shaulis said
“We came in knowing she was a great pitcher
Watts didn't allow a hit until McKee singled to center to start the fourth inning
Walsh scored its only two runs when Renee Brown and Ella Girard singled in the seventh and Wise singled to right with two outs to plate both runs
