Gayle Elaine (Frey) Taurisano created this Life Tributes page to make it easy to share your memories
I see a lot on social media posts that surprise me
but nothing as shocking as what I just saw on my Facebook feed
It was from the page of my good friend Chris Taurisano
the best fishing guide in Northern Illinois
Taurisano wrote some thoughtful words about his career and his accomplishments
He thanked his legion of steady clients and talked about the famous musicians and sports stars that he has had the opportunity to work for
He talked about his family and that they had always supported his efforts
He announced that he was going to leave the fishing guide business and turn his T-Bone Guide Service over to longtime partner Matt Madlener
Taurisano was retiring from the guiding business and he is still a spry 49
People keep at it until their bodies give out or they keel over
How does somebody retire from a job that most people do for recreation
It’s damned hard work and I had the pleasure of watching Taurisano guide
There is nobody who works any harder than him
He was worth every dime his clients paid him
A lot of people knew of Taurisano and his fishing exploits but didn’t know of all the other things that made him tick
Frankie went through a very long and traumatic bout with childhood cancer
but parents never get to rest assured of anything
but a child with medical issues is even rougher
he just kept guiding 12 months a year whenever the weather allowed
Taurisano worked as an electrician in every available open hour he had to keep the cash coming in
Family is incredibly important to Taurisano
and he always honors the memory of his beloved grandfather who was his life’s primary and most important fishing teacher
Taurisano is a musician who sang and played guitar in a band whenever he could because he loved it
He worked out like a maniac and was always in top physical condition
He decided to take up the sport of muay thai
This is a form of kickboxing that is part of the mixed martial arts world
In his first bout his opponent knocked him out with a vicious kick to the head
In his most recent bout his hand was raised in victory and he was awarded a championship belt
I am sad to think that Taurisano will no longer be a part of the Illinois professional fishing community
He is one of the best fishermen I have ever had the pleasure of being in a boat with
He is one of the hardest-working people I know
Taurisano is a top-quality human being who has always done the best for his friends

The holiday season is a time meant to be spent with friends
and loved ones — and not regretting the classic blunders that could lead to fire
the Utica Fire Department urges caution and to take care this time of year as they get more calls than usual
These can be anything from the exposure to the cold
and drivers not taking heed of road conditions
“We see a lot of issues with winter weather and exposure
especially in the homeless population,” Chief Fire Marshal Philip Taurisano said
it’s just people who are outside for too long doing too much.”
Taurisano recommends seeking shelter at a warming center or a homeless shelter
The Morrow Warming Center is located at 500 Plant Street in Utica
and the Utica Rescue Mission is located at 293 Genesee Street
Taurisano urges people to dress appropriately when outside
And when trying to warm up inside is when Taurisano says things can go wrong
“We see an uptick in fires because everyone is buttoning up their house and starting up their furnaces or fireplaces for the first time,” Taurisano said
chimneys can be dirty and have creosote build-up
and so much more can go wrong if people don’t know what they’re doing
Taurisano recommends people read the owner’s manual for their fireplaces or look online for proper use and care
The Firefighters Association of the State of New York recommends people have their heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by professionals
For those on a budget and thinking about using the oven to heat their home
but gas ovens left unattended can lead to a buildup of carbon monoxide
Even electrical ovens can overheat or malfunction
“I don’t know how often we’ve had candle-related fires,” Taurisano said with exasperation
“Candles and smoking are right in line with each other
he said he’s gone as far as replacing the candles with warming dishes that won’t light flames
With most modern furniture made of processed plastics and fibers
The Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services says that people should trim their candlewicks before burning them and use candleholders that are heat-resistant
capable of containing any drops and placed on a stable
“Real Christmas trees are a real danger,” Taurisano said
The amount of heat a Christmas tree can put off is incredible
FASNY warns people against letting their Christmas trees dry out and become an easy way to start a house fire
'Tis the season: Considering a living Christmas tree this year? Here's what you need to know
Taurisano recommends people with live Christmas trees water them immediately and frequently to prevent them from drying out
they should be kept away from heating vents and space heaters
And while fake Christmas trees are fire-resistant
The same lessons about keeping Christmas trees away from heaters and being wary of malfunctioning lights
Some families might be using a space heater this year that runs off of fuel oil
which Taurisano said can quickly start fires
While using a kerosene heater indoors is legal
Taurisano urges people to fill it up outside
kerosene heaters can cause a risk of carbon monoxide gas if used for too long
“There’s a lot of concern when it comes to heating and fires when the weather gets colder,” Taurisano said
“People are driving like it’s August,” Taurisano said
“There’s a lot of things that need to be considered when it comes to winter driving.”
The first pieces of advice the fire marshal can give are to always leave extra room to stop and pay attention to road conditions
“Also check your tires and make sure your car is in good condition
We’ve seen a lot of little things contribute to accidents with injuries.”
People should make sure to clean their cars off completely when taking off for their commute and not leave any snow on their hood or roofs
Snow left on hoods can fly off and hit the windshield
while snow on roofs can hit the driver behind you
“Trucks are famous for that on the thruway,” Taurisano said
“And you have people’s cars getting hit with two-inch-thick pieces of ice.”
drivers should always be prepared should their car get stuck
More: Clinton's bustling local business scene invites shoppers this holiday season
All aboard! Free screenings of 'The Polar Express' upcoming for K-5 students in Oneida County
Taurisano recommends always to have at least half a tank of gas when taking off for the day
and anything else to make a 12-hour wait bearable
“We had that situation a few years ago when we got 30 inches of snow and people didn’t believe it,” Taurisano said
“They didn’t believe it and should have just stayed home
but they ended up in their car for 10 to 12 hours.”
Taurisano said the job of a fire marshal is fire prevention
meaning it’s his job to put the fire department out of business
the fire marshal says smoke detectors are the first line of defense
Those with smoke detectors already installed should check to make sure they’re in service and have fresh batteries
Those without smoke detectors should install them in every room of the house where people sleep
there should be a smoke detector,” he said
“You should also put them in common areas where people gather.”
Taurisano said putting a smoke detector in the kitchen is unnecessary
“As much as people say you should put it in the kitchen
the smoke detector should be right outside the kitchen,” he explained
Those with questions or concerns can always call the Utica Fire Department at https://cityofutica.com/departments/fire-department/index
Sap’s rising in Geauga’s sugar maple trees with the recent warm spell and the griddles at Century Village Museum in Burton will soon heat up to turn out pancakes at the annual March breakfasts
Preston Auto Group in Burton Village generously sweetened this year’s project by contributing $5,000 to the Geauga County Historical Society to help start the engine
said GCHS interim President Linda Taurisano during a recent phone interview
Preparation for the nonprofit’s major fundraiser starts early
who has been involved with the breakfast relay for seven years
said she has been rounding up supplies and volunteers for several weeks to jump start this year’s breakfasts
Pictures of kids with the Easter Bunny will be taken from 11 a.m
applesauce and regular pancakes will be served to order and gluten-free flapjacks are available
“We had gluten-free last year — it went over really big,” she said
the young man with a gluten sensitivity asked
“I’m working — where’s my gluten free pancakes?” Taurisano recalled
Besides GCHS members putting in their time
local Rotary Club of Burton-Middlefield members sizzle sausage and flip pancakes while individuals doing court-ordered community service help clear tables
The syrup — poured over Sunday breakfast pancakes and sold during the festivities — mostly comes from the sugar bush on the Century Village property and is processed on the grounds
Money from the breakfasts and sales makes it possible for Century Village to produce many events all year long
the Battle of Wardin; A WWII Living History Event will be reenacted from 9 a.m

The conservation of the genetic integrity of Apis mellifera subspecies has emerged as an important objective
the Emilia-Romagna region became the first Italian regional authority to issue a law specifically addressing the protection of the native Apis mellifera ligustica subspecies
In this study we analysed a highly informative portion of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)
widely used for assessing genetic diversity of honey bee populations
By analysing 1143 honey bees sampled after the introduction of this law
we provided a snapshot of the distribution of mtDNA haplotypes in this region
The two most frequent mtDNA haplotypes were C1 (characteristic of A
reported in 86.5% and 11.0% of the analysed bees
About 1.3% and 1.1% of the analysed bees carried mtDNA haplotypes of the A and M lineages (haplotypes A1a
Continued genetic monitoring will be important to assess the impact of this regional law over the coming years
we recommend a more stringent policy to prevent the erosion of the genetic integrity of the native subspecies A
Geographical distribution of the apiaries of the Emilia-Romagna region (22,510 km2) from which honey bees were sampled. Province abbreviations and administrative borders are highlighted. The correspondence between province name and their abbreviation is reported in Table 1
The subset indicates the position of region in the Italian map
we investigated the diffusion and distribution of mtDNA haplotypes in the honey bee population of the Emilia-Romagna region
by analysing honey bees sampled in the years 2020
just after the introduction of the regional law that protects A
We hypothesised that the effects of the law may not yet be evident
as only one or a few years passed since its publication
the observed frequency of mtDNA haplotypes in the honey bee population of the Emilia-Romagna region could serve as a baseline for monitoring the trend in the frequency of A
ligustica specific mtDNA haplotypes over the next few years
reflecting the effectiveness of the law’s enforcement
These primers amplify a portion of the intergenic non-coding region of the mtDNA located between COI and COII that contains the tRNA-Leu sequence (tRNALeu-COII) and allows the discrimination between different A
PCR was performed using an Applied Biosystem SimpliAmp Thermal Cycler (Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc.
The reaction mix contained: 2X Kapa Hifi HotStart ReadyMix PCR kit (Kapa Biosystems
USA); 20–50 ng of template DNA; 10 pmol of each primer
The PCR amplification profile included an initial denaturation step at 95 °C for 5 min
followed by 35 cycles of alternate temperatures (30 s at 95 °C
30 s at 54 °C; 30 s at 72 °C) and by a final extension step at 72 °C for 5 min
The obtained amplicons were electrophoresed on a 2.5% agarose gels in TBE1X buffer
stained with 1X GelRed Nucleic Acid Gel Station (Biotium Inc.)
PCR products were purified with a standard isopropanol precipitation-purification protocol before Sanger sequencing
Sequencing reactions obtained using both primers were loaded on an ABI3100 Avant Genetic Analyzer Sequencer (Applied Biosystems
USA) following the chain termination protocol of the BrightDye terminator cycle sequencing kit (NIMAGEN
Novel mtDNA sequence haplotypes were confirmed with a second DNA extraction
with trees obtained with 1000 bootstrap replicates
The ML tree was obtained using the General Time Reversible base substitution model considering Gamma and Invariable sites (GTR + G + I)
initial trees for the heuristic search were obtained automatically by applying Neighbour-Joining and BioNJ algorithms to a matrix of pairwise distances estimated using the MCL approach and subsequently by selecting the topology with superior log likelihood value
A discrete Gamma distribution was used to model evolutionary rate differences among sites (+ G
parameter = 0.5666) while the rate variation model allowed for some sites to be evolutionarily invariable ([+ I]
the GTR nucleotide substitution model was selected as it encompasses all transition and transversion substitutions and allows for unequal base frequencies
this model is considered the best choice for Maximum Likelihood phylogenetic reconstruction
the evolutionary distances were computed using the Maximum Composite Likelihood method and the rate variation among sites was modelled with a Gamma distribution (shape parameter = 1)
To simplify the phylogenetic representation derived from both trees
branches distinguished by less than 20% of the bootstrap replicates were collapsed together and all ambiguous positions were removed for each sequence pair using the pairwise deletion option
considered as the probability that two randomly sampled alleles are different
was calculated according to the following formula:
Fisher’s exact test was used to assess whether there was any population differentiation in terms of mtDNA haplotypes across time
Software QGIS 3.30 (http://www.qgis.org
accessed on the 20th January 2024) was used to produce a geographical representation and density map of the distribution of the mtDNA haplotypes over the whole Emilia-Romagna region
The density map was obtained using the heatmap plugin of this software
The density was calculated based on the number of points in a location
with larger numbers of clustered points resulting in larger values
heatmaps allow the identification of “hotspots” and clustering of points
Logistic regression was used to test relationships between the distribution of a specific mtDNA lineage or haplotype (coded as binary variable: presence/absence of a mitotype) across the longitudinal geographic coordinates of the Emilia-Romagna region
Amplified fragments and sequences were obtained from all 1143 sampled honey bees
Amplicon size ranged from about 550 to 900 bp
as determined from agarose gel electrophoresis
and then confirmed from the analysis of the obtained sequencing electropherograms
After sequencing, based on various polymorphisms of the tRNALeu-COII region, we identified a total of 14 different mtDNA haplotypes, whose structure and DraI restriction sites were determined in silico and are shown in Supplementary Figure S1
These haplotypes were grouped into three main mtDNA lineages: A
Twelve of these mtDNA haplotypes have already been reported by previous studies; two are novel haplotypes
are described in this study for the first time
as reported in the figures of the original article
The two novel haplotypes are marked with an asterisk
Distribution of the mtDNA haplotypes in the Emilia-Romagna region across the three years of sampling
M and A haplotypes in the different administrative provinces
The chart size is proportional to the number of honey bees analysed for each administrative province
(B) Density map of the analysed honey bees carrying the C1 mtDNA haplotype
The same map reports information of the geographical position of the apiaries from which some honey bees carried the A (blue triangle)
considering all 1143 analysed honey bee samples
a relatively low level which reflects the high frequency of the C1 haplotype in the region
In this study we analysed a large number of honey bee samples to monitor the distribution and diffusion of mtDNA haplotypes of the A
mellifera populations managed in this region
The study covers a short time window based on three years of sampling (2020
which may represent in practice a single population genetic snapshot
as no differences between mtDNA haplotype frequencies were evident between the years
This time window may not capture any relevant effects of the regional law as it was issued only in 2019
Therefore the results obtained can be considered a starting point for monitoring its effects
It is also worth mentioning that currently no specific protocols or procedures have been officially established in the region to monitor the application of the law
which may have limited the enforcement of the law in recent times
This high-density map provides a detailed and accurate representation of the distribution of mtDNA haplotypes in the region at a specific time point
sample density and time frame of sample collection
contains the P0 element typical of the A lineage but the same restriction sites as the M haplotypes
We believe that M79 has not arrived in the Italian honey bee population in the same way as the haplotype of the M7 group
but rather that it was introgressed very recently
similar to what is suggested for the M4 haplotype
This is supported by its very low frequency (only one sequence was reported) and its identification in the Piacenza Province where several other unique and low frequency haplotypes were detected
Further studies are needed to support this hypothesis
It is also important to monitor the level of adaptation to continental environments and beekeeping systems
as well as evaluate the productive and behavioural characteristics of colonies carrying foreign mitotypes
to prevent any inadvertent introduction of Africanized honey bees through trade with South America
This study offers a thorough and unprecedented analysis of the honey bee population genetics in the Emilia-Romagna region
The results are particularly important as this region currently has legislation supporting the breeding and management of A
which is particularly relevant for the high density of A
ligustica queen breeders established in the Emilia-Romagna region
Despite analysing a large number of samples
the haplotype diversity was found to be low
This is mainly due to the prevalence of the C1 haplotype
This is generally a positive result and should lead to further actions to strengthen the positioning of this subspecies as the prevalent (or unique) genetic pool in the regional territory
as expected from the full application of the regional law
Continuing the genetic monitoring that we started will be important to evaluate the effect of this law at the population genetic level over the coming years
we can recommend a more stringent policy to prevent a more extensive diffusion of foreign mitotypes
which might be indicators of erosion of the genetic integrity of the native subspecies of the Emilia-Romagna region
The sequences of the two identified novel haplotypes are available in EMBL-EBI European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) repository (http://www.ebi.ac.uk/ena) under the project number PRJEB67526

UTICA – Teri Taurisano, age 43, was called home to be with her late mother and brother due to complications after a surgical procedure on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. At the time of her passing, she was in the hearts of those who loved... View Obituary & Service Information
The family of Teri Taurisano created this Life Tributes page to make it easy to share your memories
The 2019 Research and Creativity Expo is coming up on May 1-10
To get our community excited about the student presentations that will be featured at the Expo
we’re speaking to several student presenters
and learning about their hopes for the future
research is a key element of our mission to educate for justice
because evidence-based data and thoughtful analysis opens minds and helps communities build a more just society
Our next student presenter is Ivan Taurisano ’19
an English major from Italy who will be presenting his research on the portrayal of orphans in children’s literature and how these stories shape children’s lives
Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?I'm from Rome
I come from a family of judges and lawyers and my parents wanted me to come to the United States to become a lawyer
after I earned my associate’s degree in Criminal Justice from LaGuardia Community College
I decided that I wanted a bachelor's degree in English Literature because I want to write children's books
I think John Jay has given me everything I need to do just that
I was told by many people that John Jay was not the best place for writers
my three years here have taught me differently
“I think that the English Department at John Jay is one of the strongest assets of the College.” — Ivan Taurisano
Why is John Jay an excellent place for writers?I think that the English Department at John Jay is one of the strongest assets of the College
who are willing to take an extra step to know their students as individuals and not just as a number or a figure in the classroom
I had the opportunity to work with Professor Jeffery Heiman
and Professor Claudia Zuluaga who are all published authors
All of them gave me something that I didn’t find at my previous institution or in Italy
I always knew that I wanted to be a writer
because of the nature of my job as a writer
you need to meet people and learn their stories in order to write your own and present it to the public
John Jay has been instrumental in teaching me this
How did you find your way to children’s literature?I decided to write children’s literature because I believe that a child has a greater ability to connect with a story
These were stories that talked about children who lived life very differently from my own
I always felt like I was leaving a part of myself in those pages
I realized that they were helping me process some dilemmas in my own childhood that I didn’t have the opportunity to process
Storytelling became a tool of self-discovery and helped build my self-esteem
“What I am trying to demonstrate is that in children’s literature
something else is given to the child to overcome this feeling of loneliness.”—Ivan Taurisano
You’re going to be part of the Research and Creativity Expo
What can people expect to see and learn from your presentation when they go?What I was hoping to do was present my honors project
and Parental Absence in Children's Literature
Psychological theories today show that loneliness and neglect are two things that shape a child in a way that is going to cause a lot of problems when they become adults
My goal is to present the issue in a way that is not overwhelming and show that yes
People aren’t expecting to go to this expo and see a topic like this
maybe in that audience there’s a psychology major who will listen to me and see that there is an interdisciplinary connection here between Psychology and English
Would you say that there are an overwhelming number of books that have this common theme?I’m working on a series of books from the beginning of the 20th Century to today
by Frances Hodgson Burnett which was published in 1911; The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman which was published in the beginning of the 21st Century; and James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl
What I am trying to demonstrate is that in children’s literature
something else is given to the child to overcome this feeling of loneliness
the child becomes an orphan and then they are given some sort of substitution
What is really interesting is that the children are given a friend who is generally of the same age
but more importantly the child enters an enchanted world where they are empowered
What happens inside this peach is interesting
it’s as if he is crawling into his mother’s womb
and they assume roles that we would normally identify as a mother
the author teaches children that while James doesn’t have human parents
he has figures who assume those roles in order to help him develop in the same way as if he did have those parents
the child goes back to the real world because he has been given the things he needs to develop himself
These magical realms are a way to process trauma
“When you share your art and someone connects with it
in that moment the author has accomplished something that other fields don’t allow you to.”—Ivan Taurisano
How does your research help move the needle forward on justice issues? For me
I had experiences of being bullied in my school
I was alone and didn’t know how to connect with other people
My parents are judges—my mom is the President of the Juvenile Court in Rome—so she always talked during dinner about all of the children that she met and how their lives were so difficult because of their circumstances
climb the social ladder and get to the top
I can try to bring some people with me and we can climb this ladder together
when you share your art and someone connects with it
in that moment the author has accomplished something that other fields don’t allow you to
I just want to help people and find ways to connect with people through words
if I can really touch someone and change just one person's life
what do you hope you’ll be doing?I’m attending Simmons University in the fall where I’ll get an M.A
I hope to be able to be a full-time writer
in Literature for Young Adults from Cambridge University in the U.K
because I love to write and I love the way writing changes lives
and see how before she began writing she was depressed
an entire generation has been named after her books—The Potter Generation
and I am still reading those books today because they left an impression on me
if I can really touch someone and change just one person’s life
To learn more about this presentation and others, make sure to come to the Research and Creativity Expo from May 1-10

Sveva D’Antonio and Francesco Taurisano: Our collection is our life
Having such memories in front of us every day allows us to escape our daily routines
Artists are dreamers and their art allows us to dream about alternative worlds
to invent new ways of imagining ourselves in society
Artsy: Is there a specific work you’re thinking about more
We’re inspired by the saturation of the color
but also impressed by the way we feel uncomfortable looking at it
It raises questions about the function of an image and the construction of subjectivity in contemporary culture
Artsy: Have you discovered new artists during this time
S.D. & F.T.: We never stop discovering new artists. We love to open up our research to new scenarios in visual art. Now, we’re returning to our favorite artists like Michael E. Smith
They each express the relationships between the body and the society
They lead us to rethink the way we live and bear in mind the possibilities of change

Artsy: Have you found ways to support artists and art spaces during this time
S.D. & F.T.: We started a series of live videos on our Instagram account
and what they think should change in the art system
We started with artists and then we interviewed other figures of the art world: art fair directors
each one of us should rethink the way we act within it
which is something artists are asking for right now
requires cooperation and gathering a community together
We also recently acquired a painting by the artist Sol Calero from ChertLüdde gallery in Berlin

SearchAntonella Bassani takes second win of the season in Porsche Cup BrasilRACERSSep 4
20234 min readAntonella Bassani was the highest scorer of the weekend at Termas de Rio Hondo
as the 17-year-old race car rookie claimed her second pole position and her second race win of the season to move into second place in the championship standings of Porsche Cup Brasil
Bassani's outstanding rookie season in race cars featured a fourth place overall and class podium at debut
followed by a pole position and her first outright podium just one round later
where she climbed the top step of the podium for the first time
at only her third race weekend in GT racing
the driver coached by former Indycar driver Bia Figueiredo scored her second pole position of the season after a close duel with Eduardo Taurisano - eventually prevailing by a 0.005 second margin
because I prepared myself a lot for the Termas round"
"I'm not even going to celebrate the pole because soon there's another quali
The session was in fact followed shortly after by Q2
which set the grid for Sunday's race at the 4.805 km circuit
The battle between Bassani and Taurisano resumed - this time with a reversed outcome: Taurisano edged his opponent by just 0.035s for his second pole position of the season
having surpassed Marcelo Tomasoni in the final minutes - ahead of championship leader Tomasoni and Josimar Junior
who slotted in the top five on the final lap

Antonella Bassani had to convert race 1 pole positions into a victory and she did just that - not without some close battles in the first half of the race
While the starting procedure was initially aborted and then resumed under safety car, Antonella held the top spot at the green flag ahead of Eduardo Taurisano and Antonio Junqueira, in a confident start by the young driver of the #72 Mobil1-sponsored Porsche 911 GT3
Taurisano spun and dropped to fifth place on lap 7
Antonella Bassani was quick to seize the opportunity and reclaimed the race lead
aided by a big battle for the runner up position over four seconds adrift
Antonella's second victory of the season was also particularly important for the points' tally
as she gained 7 points to Marcelo Tomasoni
"Now we are second in the championship
we will start from P2 and look for the victory and the leadership of the championship again."

Bassani had another chance to carry momentum and lined up second on the grid
who also had proved to be in great form at the Argentinian venue
who had her mirrors full of Marcelo Tomasoni and Josimar Junior
Josimar Junior found a way past both drivers and moved up to second - while Bassani remained under pressure from Célio Brasil
Josimar Junior was the fastest driver on track and caught Taurisano for the lead - but Bassani found great pace after the initial laps and was not ready to give up the fight: she soon set the fastest lap of the race to rejoin the leading duo - just as Wagner Pontes spun out in the gravel and brought out the safety car with 15 minutes to go
The race was back to green for the final 10 minutes and the top three slightly pulled away
Bassani had more pace and attacked Josimar Junior - but a fast approaching Marcelo Tomasoni seized the opportunity and stole third from her championship rival
Bassani fought back and completed a spectacular double pass on lap 10 that gained her second place once again - in what was arguably the best move of the weekend
Antonella closed the fifth round as the highest scorer of the weekend and will tackle the season finale at Interlagos - in a F1 support race - as vice leader
having scored 209 points in her rookie season in race cars so far
