>> Prior to its PIAA Class 3A quarterfinal game Saturday
the Garnet Valley girl lacrosse team attended the fifth and final Kip Taviano #10ve Lacrosse Celebration in Glen Mills
During warm-ups and following their convincing 17-7 romp over District 11 champion Parkland
a standout lacrosse player at The Haverford School
was killed in a car accident days before his graduation in 2013
Kip’s younger sister) is a senior on our team and the whole Kip Taviano event is really special to our group,” GV coach Jenny Purvis said
the Jags carried over their enthusiasm and were ready to go against Parkland
They looked nothing like the team that needed overtime to defeat Parkland in the regular season
“Our whole team was there for the Kip Tav event
and coming there from that … it’s something we like to do every year,” junior Regan Nealon said
it gives us a little more fire for our game.”
The Jaguars never let their guard down Saturday
putting on a textbook display of Garnet Valley girls lacrosse
and advanced to the semifinal round of the state tournament
The District 1 champions will face a familiar foe in District 1 third-place finisher Unionville
which disposed of District 12 and defending PIAA 3A champion Archbishop Carroll Saturday
“We were pumped up in the locker room and I think we came out ready to play,” said Nealon
“Last time we played them we went into overtime with them
so we really want to come out here and show them we are the better team
This victory Jaguars (16-2) was never in doubt
so we don’t want to have that happen for a third year in a row.”
The match got off to an inauspicious start for Parkland when senior attacker Irene Lee was whistled for a yellow card
enabling the Jags to pounce with the man advantage
Kamryn McNeal scored the first of her four first-half goals to give GV a 1-0 lead
we really got better at working together and moving the ball around
It’s really starting to show at this point in the season,” McNeal said
At this point in the season we’re doing really well and I honestly cannot believe how successful we’ve been.”
Parkland (19-7) stayed within striking distance for the first 10 minutes
Jill Bushinsky’s tally 10:25 into regulation cut GV’s lead to 3-2
The first half essentially was the Kamryn McNeal-Reagan Nealon-Riley Delaney show
All three took turns sharing the goal-scoring responsibilities
The Jags tallied nine of the final 10 goals of the opening half
They found the back of the net twice in the waning seconds
then McNeal scored on a free position with five seconds to go to give GV a 12-3 cushion
The Jags thrived on attack and got a slew of players involved
McNeal (two assists) and Regan Nealon (one assist) each posted four goals
while McKee chipped in with two goals and a pair of helpers
Kathryn Toohey netted two goals and Kara Nealon pitched in with a goal and three assists
Senior goalie Sam Hamalak made fives saves in the cage
“I think it shows that … we have a lot of options and we’re not a one-trick pony,” Purvis said
“Any one of those seven girls on offense can score and anyone can cause a turnover
I love it when the stat sheet is spread out
because it shows that we have such good balance.”

Massey’s Canyon has drastically come to a halt compared to the past few weeks
A few gaffer dolphin were caught by trollers
and B buoys and the Old Grounds with jigs leading the way
2-ounce flounder caught from the Old Grounds at Lewes Harbour Marina
7-ounce flounder at the Old Grounds on a shiner
2-ounce flattie aboard the Katydid at the Old Grounds while bouncing bucktails off the bottom
Small ling and a sea bass are also being caught with the flounder
Spanish mackerel and bluefish are still being caught at the Fenwick Shoal with the best bite coming from trolling spoons
The amount of bluefish getting caught at the Fenwick Shoal is worth the trip
Decent marlin action has been happening at the Baltimore and Washington canyons for anglers trolling
and participating in the 43rd Annual White Marlin Open
There will be more to come on the tournament as final results come in
Craig Giba pulled in a 18-pound gaffer dolphin at the Baltimore Canyon
Bigger flounder are biting at Bubblegum Beach with jigs
and decent size sheepshead have been caught during the morning
and daytime hours at the Indian River Inlet along the rock jetty on sand fleas
Small rockfish are being caught at night on sand fleas
kings have been steady along the Delaware coastline with bloodworms the most effective bait
Slot rockfish are still being caught at the submerged rock jetty at Augustine Beach
The best method is to use egg weights and drift peelers in and out of the rocks (be careful not to get hung up)
that could be due to the heat with less anglers heading out on boats
and trout have been hitting throughout the bay
most notably at the reef sites on bloodworms
Action on tog and sheepshead has slowed at the Outer Wall and Ice breakers
they are still lingering in the area and hitting on sand fleas
Croaker and spot are biting at the Cape Henlopen Pier on bloodworms with most of the croaker short of keeper size
A few flounder have been caught at the pier on minnows and jigs
but the kayakers have had far better luck at the pilings at the end of the pier with minnows and jigs
More slot stripers are biting in the Delaware
along with the submerged rock jetty about two miles north of the Delaware Memorial Bridge on the New Jersey side
are among the most productive spots with bunker working at the towers and yozuri lures catching the stripers at the jetty
The lit up Market Street Bridge at the Wilmington Riverfront has been productive in the Christina around 9 p.m.
on outgoing tides with basically any lure working
Sometimes the action is so fast the stripers hit the second the lure hits the water
trolling bucktails from the first bend past the former Up the Creek Restaurant to where the tidal meets the non-tidal section has worked pretty well
Sometimes I stop at the Amtrak bridge to make a few casts along the structure
Slots were also biting in the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal on eels and swim shads between the bridges in Lewes
decent flounder action has been reported in the canal at the Savannah Road Bridge and the Lightship with minnows working the best
Small croaker are hitting bloodworms in the canal as well
The banks of the Broadkill River has seen good striper action on lures in the morning and evening hours
and Lums Pond had good bass reports this week on senkos
The bulk of the action happens during the early morning hours and evening hours

Flounder continue to bite at Reef Sites 10
with bucktails tipped with squid working the best
Sea bass are being caught alongside the flounder
The Katydid has been successful running out to Site 11
A few flounder were caught in the Indian River Inlet back bays on squid
Rockfish and trout are being caught at the Inlet on sand fleas
For anglers hitting the surf it has been mostly blues on mullet
and kingfish on bloodworms along the Delaware shoreline
There have been good reports on billfish from the canyons
Alexis Nowakowski caught a white marlin at the Baltimore Canyon on a naked ballyhoo
Flounder continue to hit at bay reef sites
Decent size croaker are also being caught at reef sites along with spot
White perch are biting from shore at Augustine Beach down to Port Mahon on bloodworms
Catfish are also biting from Augustine to Port Mahon on bloodworms
Bluefish are still chasing lures at the Outer Wall on outgoing tide
and blues are being caught from shore at Broadkill Beach
A few flounder have appeared at the Cape Henlopen fishing pier and are taking live minnows near the pilings
There are plenty of skates lingering around the fishing pier as well
It doesn’t hurt to bring a minnow trap to the pier
as the blues are attracted to the schools of minnows
Croaker and spot have been caught in the Broadkill River and Lewes-Rehoboth Canal this past week on bloodworms
Joe Shevlin caught a flounder in the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal on a minnow and nuclear chicken gulp
There are plenty of white perch and catfish to go around in the Delaware River from Dobbinsville to the C&D Canal
The best bet is to fish ponds with spillways
Site 11 continues to produce good numbers of tautog
Boat captains have also found tog at a number of ocean structures
The Indian River Inlet hasn’t yielded any fish
but there are a few reports of white perch biting in the Indian River
White and yellow perch are being caught at the Woodland Beach Pier with minnows
and earthworms working as the preferred bait
and yellow perch in Delaware Bay tributaries as well
The Susquehanna River has been on fire with yellow perch
Mike Bowen of Eastern Marine fished the Susquehanna by Owens Marina in Perryville with live minnows and caught six keeper yellow perch around 10 and a half inches
Richard Clendening fished Owens Marina and managed a limit of yellow perch on minnows
Izzy and Brian Mora also fished Owens Marina and caught 25 yellow perch
Pete Fechter fished the Sassafras River at the Georgetown Bridge and landed multiple yellow perch in the 12-inch range
and he caught a few rockfish in the 18-to-22-inch range
He was using a homemade fly and a three-inch split tail fluke
Ed Raymond checked into Captain Bones Bait & Tackle with a pickerel that weighed 4 pounds
4 ounces that he caught from Wyoming Pond on cubby jigs
He caught two more pickerel in the 4-pound range and landed eight bass up to 4 pounds

During last year’s prom at Garnet Valley High School in Glen Mills
lifelong friends Jon Vandenberg and Kip Taviano spent much of the night talking about the future — specifically
their future as men’s lacrosse teammates at Furman
“When I committed to play lacrosse here at Furman
“He was just so excited to come here and play.”
That excitement tragically ended just four days later when Taviano was killed in a car accident
While Taviano never got to suit up for the Paladins
coach Richie Meade wanted to ensure that one of his first players to commit was always a part of the new program
I think it’s more devastating if the child is not remembered,” said Meade
“He was a wonderful kid from a wonderful family
Remembering Kip is going to help everybody else here
That number is just going to be a reminder to all of us that we have no problems
Taviano’s family was moved by the ceremony
“It’s pretty overwhelming,” said Jim Taviano
“We had no idea they were going to do all of this
We would’ve been here anyway… Everyone here has been so supportive.”
“It’s really cool to actually be here and see where he would’ve attended classes – and just seeing the guys on the field too
because I can just picture him down there.”
While Vandenberg attended Garnet Valley High along with Maggie
where he played football in addition to lacrosse
McBride Award for improvement in academics and athletics as a result of hard work and dedication
While the respect Meade has earned in the lacrosse world initially drew Taviano to Furman
it was his first visit that sealed his decision
“He knew when he stepped on campus that this is where he wanted to be,” said Jim Taviano
“The small campus and intimate classrooms; he thrived in a high school like that.”
and each wears a purple wristband emblazoned with #10VE
I and everybody else wishes he could be here today,” said Vandenberg

and our thoughts and prayers go out to the Taviano family and Kip’s many friends
We will work together today and in the weeks to come to support our boys and the School community in coping with this tragedy," read a statement from The Haverford School.According to the school
Taviano will be remembered for his "affable" personality
"He was a strong student and a respected member of the varsity football and lacrosse teams
including the 2013 Fords’ team that recently won the prestigious Inter-Ac Invitational lacrosse championship
Taviano committed to play for the new Division I lacrosse program at Furman University beginning in fall 2013," the statement reads
Watch a video of Taviano's friends talking about him.
"The crash that took Taviano’s life occurred at about 5:30 p.m. on a sharp curve in the 300 block of Smithbridge Road. According to Pennsylvania State Police, Taviano, driving a Toyota Camry, failed to negotiate the curve and swerved into the opposite lane of traffic and into the path of an oncoming Land Rover," reports the Delco Times.
Taviano, a member of the Haverford School’s Class of 2013 and its lacrosse team, was pronounced dead at the scene, the newspaper reports. Read how the community has responded to his death on Twitter.

From a measurables standpoint he checks in where you want a top defensive back prospect to be around 6 feet, 185 pounds. Long-limbed athlete who has a 77-inch wingspan to further validate his overall size. His athleticism is above average and shows up consistently.
Toviano is a muscular, broad-shouldered young man who still has a lot of room to add mass and gain strength as he develops in the weight room. His lower half is lean and well-defined. Flashes very good quickness and change of direction for a longer-body athlete. Does a nice job of being smooth transitioning once he flips his hips and is light on his feet.
Good in his backpedal keeping his body square with the ability to plant and go once the receiver has declared in his break. Good in press coverage where he doesn’t panic. Shows patience as he mirrors the receiver with good eye placement and leverage.
Once the ball is in the air, reacts well to the receiver going for it and attacks the hands to make a play. In off-coverage, flashes the instincts to read and react quickly and not get caught in bad body position. Does a nice job of getting depth on his drops and staying in his zone without chasing receivers and being disciplined.
A player who is a good overall athlete as he has 3-phase snaps on special teams, offense, and defense. Shows good speed with the ability to chase down guys. Willing to come up and tackle in run support. Plays with good strength and is physical.
Depending on how he matures and grows he could transition to safety as well. He has the ability and skill to have a multi-all-conference type career ending up with an NFL-type career. Could become a top half of the draft prospect.
2022: Finished senior season with 38 tackles, two INTs (both TDs), two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. Contributed 9-58 rushing.
2021: Texas District 8-6A first-team selection as a junior. Recorded 26 tackles, one INT, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. Added 41-415-8 rushing (10.1 ypc) and one kickoff return TD.
2020: Texas District 8-6A Defensive Newcomer of the Year. Varsity starter at CB as a sophomore.

Before another Garnet Valley girls' lacrosse win last week
The Jaguars are gearing up for the PIAA final against Springfield (Delco)
scheduled for noon Saturday at Hersheypark Stadium
And they will be bringing the message of Kip Taviano with them
Taviano died last May in a two-car accident in Delaware County
The 17-year-old was finishing his senior year at the Haverford School
He had committed to play lacrosse at Furman University
played on Garnet Valley's 2011 and 2012 state-championship teams
"I think we're definitely going to win it for Maggie and Kip," Warden said
and it would be awesome if we came out on top."
Coach Jenny Purvis asked her players before the season how they wanted to design their annual team T-shirts
They told her they wanted them to represent Taviano
They chose purple shirts - the color of Furman - and printed on the back the Twitter hashtag that Warden scribbles on her hand
It was created after Taviano's death and uses his uniform number to spell "love."
Anything that can make them go in the same direction and have the same goals definitely helps."
The Jaguars (23-2) have won 14 of their last 15 games
The loss came in last month's District 1 final against Springfield (24-2)
The Cougars scored with 3.4 seconds left to win by one
with Garnet Valley claiming a four-goal victory early this season
Springfield is riding the play of goalie Katie Bedard and a defense that has allowed an average of 6.8 goals this season
"It feels awesome," Springfield junior Emily Santana said
"We know they're a strong team and they've been tough competition in the past
