(TSXV: ZAU) ("Zodiac Gold" or the "Company")
is pleased to announce channel sample results of 17m at 1.09 g/t Au and 1.17m at 18.79 g/t Au from the Alasala and Alasala South targets respectively
The targets are 3km apart (Figure 1) and are included in the Company's extensive pipeline of targets within its Mineral Exploration Licenses covering over 2,300km2
The Company concluded a drilling program consisting of 8 holes at the Alasala target in October 2024 and reported results including 4.05m at 13.92 g/t (including 1.6m at 34.5 g/t Au)
7m at 2.23 g/t Au (including 1m at 12.65 g/t Au) and 4.25m at 0.99 g/t Au (including 0.7m at 5.25 g/t Au)
Channel samples taken in the Lion Hill artisanal pit during the drilling program returned 6.05m at 9.06 g/t Au
reinforcing the high-grade potential of the Alasala target (press release dated October 28

Follow-up geological mapping and channel sampling at the Alasala target focused on structures cutting across the north-northeast trending soil anomaly
Seventeen channel samples were taken across a west-northwest trending structure in the Mandingo Hill area (Figure 2)
90m south of the mineralized zone intersected in hole ALDD007 (4.05m at 13.92 g/t Au)
Zodiac Gold considers the northwest trending Todi shear zone structures to be highly significant in the distribution of gold mineralization in the region
particularly within favorable host rocks such as the amphibolite and melanocratic gneiss package that is consistently observed in artisanal workings from the Company's Alasala to Youth Camp targets (Figure 1)

Zodiac Gold has completed preliminary reconnaissance exploration and is pleased to report that a 1.17m channel sample returned a result of 18.79 g/t Au
This further validates the potential for high-grade gold discoveries in the Alasala area
Note that during this initial stage of exploration
channel samples could only be taken on the edge of the artisanal workings due to flooding in the rainy season
More detailed mapping and sampling will be completed during the dry season
commented: "We are excited by the identification of additional mineralized zones associated with northwest trending structures at Alasala
providing further drilling targets for high-grade gold
The high-grade result from reconnaissance exploration at the previously unexplored Alasala South target further validates the outstanding potential of this target."
The Zodiac Gold licenses are located only 13 km from the capital city of Monrovia
meaning that the project benefits from existing infrastructure
with extensive artisanal gold mining and only limited systematic exploration completed in the past
The Todi project encompasses a vast 2,316 km2 land package situated within an underexplored region of West Africa
Mineralization in 57 of 65 holes drilled to date
District-scale gold exploration potential with proven high-grade mineralization across multiple drill-ready targets along a 20 km gold corridor
supported by excellent infrastructure and proximity to established mines
Strategically located 20 km SE of Avesoro's New Liberty Gold Mine (1.8 Moz
resource) with production of 360Koz in 2023 (Avesoro website: https://avesoro.com/) (Figure 3)
particularly along a major northwest trending Todi shear zone structure
Diamond drilling completed at the Arthington and Alasala targets
Drilling highlights from 32 holes at Arthington include 6m at 10.6 g/t Au (including 3m at 20.45 g/t Au)
9.65m at 7.5 g/t Au (including 3m at 20.36 g/t Au) and 9.14m at 4.2 g/t Au
Drilling highlights from Zodiac Gold's 2024 drilling of 8 holes at Alasala include 4.05m at 13.92 g/t Au (including 1.6m at 34.5 g/t Au) and 7m at 2.23 g/t Au (including 1m at 12.65 g/t Au)
Results from previous drilling include 6.0 m at 7.69 g/t Au
as well as a historical result of 19.6 m at 6.17 g/t Au (re-sampling of the historical drill core returned results of 21m at 4.1 g/t Au)
The northern part of the project is in a major iron ore district with established infrastructure
along strike from mines with significant historical and current production
USGS mapping shows a 65km extension of iron-bearing formations from the Bong Mine through the Zodiac Gold licenses
A historical mineral resource within the licenses was reported by West Peak Iron in 2014 (for details see press release by Zodiac Gold on October 7

The intersection reported at the Alasala target includes 17 one meter channel samples taken perpendicular to the strike of the zone
therefore the intersection reflects the approximate true thickness of the zone
The intersection reported at the Alasala South target includes a single channel sample
again taken across the interpreted true thickness of the zone
The material was bagged at the sampling location and transported a short distance to the Company's exploration camp at Alasala
All samples met the standards for chain of custody without the opportunity for third party access from Zodiac Gold's exploration camp to the sample preparation laboratory in Monrovia
Sample preparation was performed by SGS in Monrovia
Each sample was dried and then crushed to 70% passing -2mm and a representative 1kg split was taken by riffle splitting
The split was then pulverized to 85% passing -75 micron and approximately 200g was bagged and labelled
with the remainder being returned to Zodiac Gold
Analysis was performed by 50g fire assay with an atomic absorption finish (method GO_FAA50V10) at SGS Ghana
Both the preparation and analytical laboratories have internal QA/QC programs
Zodiac Gold submitted one CRM sample in the channel sample sequence reported
No blank or duplicate samples were submitted with the samples reported

Even before geopolitics and cultural polarisation made environmental, social and governance (ESG) a touchy subject
the concept had become “very muddled”
chief sustainability officer of Mahindra Group
one of India’s largest conglomerates
Everyone has a different understanding of what ESG means
and confusion over the terminology and the complexity of sustainability reporting and disclosure have led to pushback from businesses over “what is important and what is not,” says Todi
The former Bain management consultant runs the sustainability team of a US$20 billion company that employs 240,000 people across 20 industries in 100 countries
He was appointed lead of sustainability strategy and partnerships in January 2022 and has helmed the team as group chief sustainability officer since July 2024
Mahindra Group – which operates in sectors including real estate
and renewable energy – committed to be carbon neutral by 2040 and use only renewables by 2030
Speaking on The Eco-Business Podcast in a new series called On the frontlines
which profiles changemakers on the hard edge of sustainable business
Todi said he believes the core elements of ESG will continue to be relevant for businesses
even though the term has become politicised in the United States and is increasingly taboo in some parts of Asia
The pertinance of one issue in particular – climate – is only going to increase
Sustainability is really about protecting your business from climate risk
“Climate change is not a matter of opinion
“The implications of climate change – both from a risk perspective as well as an opportunity perspective – are going to be very real and impact a wide number of industries in a very significant manner over a short period of time in the near future.”
“When we talk about Scope 2 decarbonisation [the electricity a company uses]
the activity will be the same – to reduce emissions by moving to renewable energy
But the terminology will be on energy security and cost savings – because there is a strong business case associated with it,” he said
the actions businesses take to improve their supply chains will focus more on resilience and security
On this podcast, Todi talks about the development of Mahindra Group’s Planet Positive strategy
where sustainability sits in the organisation
and how he drives the sustainability agenda in a large conglomerate
“There is no one single thing that defines sustainability leadership
It takes a mix of the right commitments and intent
it has to be underpinned by real action,” he said
Mahindra Group has a relatively small central sustainability team
and each of its listed businesses has its own sustainability unit
the company has about 50 dedicated sustainability staff and a crew of “sustainability enablers” who also play a critical role in executing the strategy
“Sustainability is something that has to be integrated and executed – not just by the sustainability team
Sustainability teams are often advisors and change-makers
but the real action has to be taken by other teams,” he said
which is also called the Tea Garden City of India [Dibrugarh in the northeastern state of Assam] and have spent a childhood surrounded by greenery
A lot of the personal motivation came from the place where I was born
So I think a lot of love for the environment was from my childhood
I went to one of the top engineering institutes
and due diligence across a number of different sectors
As I was interviewing for different roles outside of the management consulting ecosystem
It is one of the large business offices in India
I figured that there was an intention to elevate the subject of sustainability from being seen as a compliance exercise that is cost-centred to one that is value-centred in a strategic area of work
It seemed like a very exciting problem to work on
I did not have any professional background in sustainability
but I was driven by a mix of passion for the environment and the problem statement being interesting – how do you make sustainability value-adding for the business
That is what made me choose my current role
One of the first things we did about three years ago
when I started in this role was to put together a framework to understand what it means to be a sustainability leader
What are the aspects and considerations that one has to take
we realised that sustainability is a relatively complex topic
which is often a bit easier to measure in terms of market capitalisation
There is no one single metric that defines sustainability leadership
It is a mix of the right commitments and intent
Are you moving forward in terms of reducing your environmental impact
How are you navigating the transition of the business – especially with respect to the climate transition
Then it could also include how investors view the space from a ESG lens
There’s a whole host of things that you have to do
all of these have to be underpinned by real action
Sustainability teams are often advisors and change-makers – the real action has to be taken by other teams
Given that we operate in so many different sectors
broadly classified in the manufacturing and services sector
how do we come up with what I call a common programme that can act as a framework for driving all the businesses forward
That’s where we started with the Planet Positive strategy
The concept being: how can we operate each of the Mahindra Group companies in a manner that can be considered “planet positive” and integrate sustainability as a core part of the business strategy
The first pillar is what we call “greening your operations”
which is very relevant in the manufacturing context
There are three or four aspects that we are primarily looking at
all the direct emissions of the company – both Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions
how do we help all the companies become “water positive”
all the waste management practices – ensuring that each of the locations and factories are zero waste-to-landfill
The fourth area that we picked up is what we call material circularity
In the manufacturing context we consume a lot of material
The second pillar of action is decarbonising industries
The idea is that there a lot of things that you do can’t be done by a single company
It is dependent on the ecosystem that you operate in
So the first area of focus was: Can we build a pipeline of green revenues
In the automotive context it’s about a green product – so
In some cases it may be a green service and for other industries it could also be a “green enabler”
That’s an example of being an enabler for the green transition
Mahindra Group has a renewable energy company [Mahindra Susten] which provides green energy
and we have an operations and maintenance company in the solar sector [Mahindra Teqo]
Company by company – both in the real estate sector and the hospitality sector – we are trying to make similar transitions of what we can do
we want to move the entire supply chain ecosystem along with us
Now there are a few thousand suppliers that engage with Mahindra
We want to build awareness around the subject that sustainability is not just a good-to-do
and is something that is good for your business
We also want to measure the performance [of companies in our supply chain and incentivise them
they are large enough companies on their own
there is a lot of handholding and coaching required
Another area of action is to look at new business models which are circular in nature
This was specifically important in the context of our auto sector
we have a company that does end-of-life vehicle recycling [Cero Recycling]
The third pillar [under the strategy looks at] the intersections: where we are able to positively influence societal outcomes
and where we have a certain degree of influence [even if] it may not be our direct business
[For example,] a big part of the Mahindra Group operates in the farm economy
We are one of the largest manufacturers of tractors globally
So between these businesses as well as some of our corporate social responsibility programmes
we are taking some action that helps farmers adopt sustainable practices and become more climate resilient
we typically work with smallholder farmers
Many of them will be the first victims of climate change
So it’s important to help them adapt to what is coming
This helps farmers protect their yields over a period of time in case of changes in rainfall patterns
which sells sustainable varieties of rice seeds which consume less water
we have planted about 25 million trees under an agroforestry model
This is an area where we don’t have much direct negative impact
because we don’t operate in industries such as mining where the negative impacts are more prominent
The policy that we follow is to reduce harm and conserve where possible
our solar businesses range across hundreds of acres of land
conserve and restore local biodiversity wherever we have physical land assets
I think the other area that we work on as a large companies is climate advocacy
both with the government and with the Indian corporate ecosystem
Because policy has a very close intersection with climate action
reporting and disclosure as a large listed company is another area that we focus on
We have 10 long-term commitments on ESG; seven of them focus on environment
around carbon neutrality and SBTi [Science-based Targets initiative] targets
We have a commitment for becoming “water positive”
This is something that is very much driven from the top
is a big advocate and champion of climate action
both at the national level and international level
Our managing director (MD) and CEO for the entire group
is also very closely involved with sustainability
I’m a part of his extended team at the corporate level
For a long time we have had the Sustainability Council
It had the members of some of the large listed companies as well as a few other group executive members
which were more specific to each of the businesses
and then set the pace for actions to be taken
We had meetings at least once every month or at least eight or nine times a year
The complexity of the nomenclature around ESG and sustainability should not prevent action
That has really helped us set a strong base with alignment at the very top
Now coming to the second part of the question
Sustainability is a lot about day-to-day actions
It is something that has to be integrated and executed
I often say that sustainability teams are often advisors and changemakers
but the real action has to be taken by other teams
We have a relatively lean team at the centre
Which is my team of about five to seven members
In each of the listed businesses we have a sustainability team
we have a single individual responsible to drive this because we operate in about 20 different industries
there are about 50-odd people who are dedicated to sustainability
who are folks who are not part of sustainability
but play a critical role in executing the sustainability plan
our procurement department has a small team which drives all sustainability action with the suppliers
our Scope 2 decarbonisation work is to a large extent supported by our renewables business
Our operations team plays a big role in driving sustainability when it comes to our resorts and hospitality business
there’s a much larger ecosystem of up to a few hundred people at least
who are more closely involved in driving actions across the group
This is a question I’ve been asked often
especially in the last four months due to global developments
It’s also a topic where I’ve had the chance to engage with a wide variety of stakeholders
There are two ways to look at sustainability
One definition of sustainability is a bit more focused on ESG
The other way to look at sustainability is through a climate lens
I do agree that there the conversation gets very muddled
Everyone has a very different understanding of what ESG means
The sub-components within ESG continue to stay relevant
phrasing and complexity associated with it are where you will see constant ups and downs
the principle of shifting to renewable energy or being more energy efficient – no one is contesting that
But the complexity associated with reporting and disclosure are places where you may see some pushback on what is important and what is not
Everyone is trying to get something out of that space
But if I were to take a slightly different view on sustainability
which is from the climate action perspective
then I have no doubt that the relevance of the subject is only going to increase
both from a risk perspective as well as opportunity perspective
is going to be very real and impact a wide number of industries in a very significant manner over a relatively short period of time in the near future
it’s a matter of time that this transition will be very strong
the only change that I see is that the terminology in which people will talk about sustainability may change a little bit
but the underlying actions won’t change
When we talk about Scope 2 decarbonisation
which is reduce emissions by moving to renewable energy
but the explanation or the terminology would be about energy security and cost savings
Because there is a strong business case associated with it as well
a lot of actions around supply chain will be about resilience and security
So the actions in a lot of ways will continue
will be a lot more business-driven rather than about doing good for society in the global ecosystem
the government is very inclined to support climate action
there continues to be a strong focus on the energy transition
the pace at which action and conversations around climate action are happening is only increasing with time
The other good part is that increasingly more people are beginning to realise that this is a lot more strategic in nature
or help you capture new business opportunities in EVs
waste manufacturing etc; there is lots of potential for growth
sustainability is really about protecting your business from climate risk
sustainability is a lot about protection from the effects of climate change
especially in your rural or agri portfolio
I really don’t think the complexity of the nomenclature around ESG and sustainability should prevent action
whether they are board members or investors
who really understands it will realise that it makes sense to continue investing in sustainability
and make it a lot more strategic than it used to be
We have a lot more young people who are interested in wanting to build a career in climate action and sustainability
One is that you have a role which is completely dedicated to the subject
irrespective of whatever function you work in
there is an element of sustainability and climate action that can be overlaid
procurement teams – when they make decisions about which supplier to prioritise and what kind of products to buy
there is a role they can play in choosing the right kind of suppliers who also are doing things on climate action and choosing the right kind of materials
how can the green financing ecosystem be leveraged
how do you talk about climate of the initiatives internally
How are you using your voice for climate advocacy
A lot of sustainability action will be driven by functions which are not sustainability
you can bring a sustainability lens that will make you much more effective in your job
That’s at least how I look at this space and how I encourage people to think about what they can do if they want to meaningfully contribute

Todi (Perugia) pays tribute to Mark di Suvero (b
among the most important living sculptors linked to the generation of abstract expressionism and active in environmental and public art internationally
curated by Marco Tonelli and promoted by the Fondazione Progetti Beverly Pepper
in collaboration with the Municipality of Todi
is held as part of the fourth edition of the Festival of the Arts and features a solo exhibition by the Italian-born U.S
spread throughout the center of the Umbrian town. The exhibition itinerary opens ideally from Piazza del Popolo
which hosts the large sculpture Neruda’s Gate (2005)
who died a few days after Augusto Pinochet’s coup d’état on Sept
the typical color of many of the American artist’s steel sculptures
The slightly inclined structure is spanned by a long steel beam to create a dynamic effect that accentuates its expressive and dramatic force
which at the end of the exhibition will remain in Todi under a loan agreement for use
is one of several tributes to famous people that di Suvero has made throughout his long career
such as to scientists and mathematicians such as Galileo
Scarlatti or Mozart or other poets such as Baudelaire
The sculpture also underscores di Suvero’s often explicit political engagement in his works
cannot be said to be unrelated to an emotional and existential involvement with the facts of reality and historical events
to emphasize his interest in the concepts of matter and antimatter
continues inside the Hall of Stones of the People’s Palace where
a number of large-scale paintings from his personal collection and his studio in New York
Such paintings express the playful and participatory sense-the audience can illuminate them with small flashlights making unexpected colors appear-that Mark di Suvero’s poetics has developed since the 1960s
as well as manifest the meaning of “drawing in space” that art historian Rosalind Krauss has given to so much iron sculpture produced in the 20th century
Mark di Suvero is the author of the poster that will accompany the 38th edition of Todi Festival
one of Italy’s and Umbria’s leading cultural events ranging from theater to music to visual arts
which will open in conjunction with the Festival of the Arts
under the artistic direction of Eugenio Guarducci
“The choice of Mark di Suvero,” says Marco Tonelli
"as artist and testimonial of the Todi Arts Festival
is motivated not only by the sculptor’s importance in the history of modern and contemporary art and in particular for so-called ’late industrial’ sculpture (of which he is practically the last exponent)
but also by a link of continuity with the work of the American sculptor Beverly Pepper
who had chosen Todi and Italy as her second home and place of life and work
beginning with an interview given in 1998 to Heidi Landecker
never hid her admiration for Mark di Suvero
whom she included in an ideal pantheon alongside sculptors such as Brancusi
The review underscores the bond that had been forged between Beverly Pepper and Mark di Suvero; the two exhibited together in numerous group shows between 1968 and 1995
public museums (including theAlbright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo and the William College Museum of Art in Williamstown)
in prestigious private galleries (such as John Weber Gallery or John Berggruen Gallery) or in public spaces dedicated to sculpture such as the Socrates Sculpture Park on Long Island in New York
Not to mention their joint presence in important sculpture collections such as that of theHirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington or the Storm King Art Center near New York
Pepper and Suvero’s works were exhibited side by side along the Riva degli Schiavoni on the Grand Canal in Venice during the Centennial Biennale
A series of free collateral initiatives (by reservation only

urban trekking on contemporary art in Todi
workshop activities for children ages 4 to 10 and families on contemporary art with a specialized childhood educator
Accompanying the review is a catalog edited by Marco Tonelli
Mark di Suvero was born in Shanghai on September 18
1933 to Italian parents(Matilde Millo di Suvero and Vittorio di Suvero)
In 1941 he moved with his family to San Francisco
In 1954-56 he attended the University of California at Santa Barbara and then Berkeley and began painting and sculpting
where he discovered Abstract Expressionism
joined the artists’ cooperative collected in the March Gallery
In 1959 he began creating sculptures out of scrap wood taken from demolished buildings
The following year he is the victim of a serious accident while working
In 1963 he is among the founders of the Park Place Gallery
In 1964 he made his first outdoor sculpture
once he learned to use cranes and welding techniques
he created the first large outdoor steel sculpture Are YearsWhat
A solo show of his work is organized at the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum in Eindoven
and in 1975 he is the first living artist to exhibit at the Jardin des Tuileries in Paris
the Vietnam War ends and he returns to the United States
The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York then dedicates a retrospective to him with works set up in various locations around the city
an association dedicated to supporting artists who wish to create large-scale sculptures

An intimate and cozy living room is the container of l'Aurora
the restaurant born in 2023 inside the Borgo dei Cipressi farmhouse
“My grandmother Aurora had always dreamed of owning a farmhouse where she could spend her vacations
so my grandfather gave her this 14-hectare property
which first he and then we decided to call L'Aurora
Just think that she personally planted the plants and cypresses!” says Federica Pasetto
who took over the family stable together with her partner Davide Barone
decided after the pandemic to start again in the Todi countryside to embark on their own idea of catering and hospitality
Federica is in charge of the dining room and the dessert line and has recreated a vintage and retro (in the positive sense of the word) atmosphere in the sign's rooms
English risers and embroidered centerpieces
completes an enchanting scenario in which the windows allow you to immerse yourself in the vastness of the greenery that surrounds the estate
enriched by about 200 olive trees - plus another 150 newly planted -
a vegetable garden and finally the breeding of farmyard animals
An ecosystem that allows the young couple to self-produce most of the ingredients used by Davide in the kitchen
while what does not come from Borgo dei Cipressi is sourced from small producers in the area
with exclusively homemade products including fresh pasta
which has always been a passion of mine," says the chef
but rather first courses such as "Tortelli di zucca e erborinato di capra" or "Fettuccine di farro alla genovese di cinghiale"; the barbecue is the other protagonist of l'Aurora as well as game and venison
“We have recently started working with fire that allows us to do different cooking ,” says Davide
goose and rabbit are animals that I would like to cook more and more often
also because they are ideal if we want to promote discourses such as sustainability
can boast of a stint in the kitchens of Heinz Beck's Pergola
an adventure that allowed him to approach raw materials differently
A concrete example is the Cannara Onion from the garden that Davide puts into cooking as soon as the embers of the evening service are turned off
In the morning he whips the inside of the vegetable and brings it to the table with herb-flavored croutons; a dish with attention to every detail that stands as a candidate to be one of the restaurant's signatures
strawberry grapes and pickled lemon is a must try
The wild boar pulled pork focaccia with truffle mayonnaise is also excellent
the Roman chef regales almost forgotten flavors with his Bottone in bianco stuffed with goose sauce: “Here
I wanted to propose my own version of a local classic
which is usually made with tagliatelle in a dry version.”
as well as the alcoholic pairing that rewards many of the Umbrian wine realities
ends with a pleasant Piglet cooked at low temperature and finished on the grill
accompanied by a mushroom and marsala glaze and Cannara onions
which close the course with a harmonious sweet note
Dessert is Federica's playground and for the occasion she brings to the table Chocolate
“This recipe consists of a chestnut shortbread
an ingredient we also find in the chocolate mousse
while I propose the fruit in a liquid version." Beautiful to look at

and yet Italian people live here day to day,” Dyck said
“I’m grateful for this opportunity to travel to Europe
but I learned so much about each city I visited
was experiencing it with other Penn State students he now considers very close friends
and by the end it felt like family,” Dyck said
We visited places like the Piazza del Popolo and the Duomo di Firenze
and you look to your right and everyone else is just as amazed as you are
Seeing monuments and historical sites in real life was so satisfying after working hard and studying them back in State College.”
Bruno-Chomin brought students together five times each week for classes in Italian language and culture
coupled with visits to important cultural sites
Dyck found the faculty-led aspect of the trip “phenomenal,” as continuous information about Italy and its culture was available via Bruno-Chomin during their visits to the various sites
Other activities on the trip included visiting art museums
looking at Gothic and Renaissance architecture
and many trips to gelato shops — a common student favorite
a fourth-year student majoring in psychology
said that seeing all the aesthetic beauty while exploring sites throughout Italy was “like a sweet dream come true.”
it has filled my heart with love once again,” Rotondo said
After experiencing the beauty that is Italy
Rotondo stumbled across a tattoo artist who helped her commemorate this monumental study abroad journey
“Dolce far niente,” means “the sweetness of doing nothing” in Italian
I learned the important lesson of slowing down to be completely present in the moment,” she said
“I think American culture is so used to the hustle and bustle that we forget to simply enjoy the little things.”
Rotondo found its magnificence “indescribably breathtaking.”
“My favorite imagery was a statue of the Roman goddess Juno Sospita
located in the Room of the Rotonda (the Round Room),” she said
“The large marble statue caught my attention
Her favorite location from the trip abroad was Naples (Napoli in Italian)
“I left half of my heart in Todi,” Rotondo said

Wayne State University School of Medicine Professor and Chair of Pharmacology Sokol Todi
will lead a study section of the National Institutes of Health for a one-year term beginning in July.
will serve as chair of the Cellular and Molecular Biology of Neurodegeneration Study Section
Cellular and Developmental Neuroscience Integrated Review Group in the NIH’s Center for Scientific Research
Todi will steer the discussion of each grant application discussed at the meeting and summarize strengths and weaknesses brought up during the discussion
The summary is used by the entire study section to determine scores given to each application
but it is also a very rewarding one,” he said
“What makes it highly rewarding is interacting with colleagues about science at the cutting edge and debating scientific notions and approaches
It is a tough job that I take very seriously
it has to do with people’s careers and their aspirations
But the energy in the room as applications are discussed is a great reward.”
Todi previously served as alternate chair and associate chair of the same study section
as well as a member of various study sections for the NIH
including Chronic Dysfunction and Integrative Neurodegeneration and various Special Emphasis panels
He was nominated for the chair role due to his demonstrated competence and achievement in his scientific discipline
evidenced by the quality of his research accomplishments

will host an exhibition curated by the Beverly Pepper Projects Foundation and the City of Todi
The Sala delle Pietre in the Palazzo del Popolo will welcome Ian Davenport (Sidcup
an internationally renowned British artist known for his innovative approach to painting and sculpture
offers an overview of his painting-installations
which blur the boundaries between two-dimensionality and sculpture
a leading exponent of the Young British Artists movement
returns to Italy after the success of his 2022 exhibition at the Chiostro del Bramante in Rome
installations that play with the floor as a pictorial surface
will be accompanied by a series of works on paper
featuring splashes of color that challenge the traditional view of painting as a static
A striking element in the exhibition will be Davenport’s video installation
which transforms the city into a stage for art and culture every year
which will be visible during the days of the event
will further enrich the visual experience proposed by the artist.Davenport’s initiative in Todi is part of a long tradition of collaboration between the Beverly Pepper Foundation
which have always promoted contemporary art as an integral part of the city’s cultural life
the city has had the privilege of hosting great masters such as Arnaldo Pomodoro
confirming its central role in the international art scene
with the return of Silvano Spada as artistic director of the Todi Festival
Davenport to also sign the 39th edition’s poster
bringing to life a program that combines the central events with a rich calendar of free collateral initiatives
These will include guided tours for the public
workshops for children and educational projects for schools
thus creating a bridge between contemporary art and the local community
with his research that embraces matter and color
invites the public to a sensory experience that goes beyond mere observation
His work thus challenges the limits imposed by artistic conventions and opens up new possibilities for understanding the relationship between form
The artist is known for his ability to combine traditional and modern techniques
creating works that challenge expectations and stimulate critical thinking
“I am delighted,” says Ian Davenport
“to have been invited by the Beverly Pepper Projects Foundation and the city of Todi to exhibit my work
Italy has always been the home of artistic brilliance
and the Italian Renaissance painters have had a huge influence on my work
The inspiration for the colors in my works often comes from artists such as Beato Angelico
My paintings explore the physical materiality of painting
thus taking on a sculptural form that restores a dynamic intervention in the exhibition space.”
“Ian Davenport,” says Antonino Ruggiano
“gives the Todi Festival 2025 a poster full of lights and colors
iconically anticipating the figure of a special edition with which the city rediscovers Silvano Spada artistic director and sees the collaboration with the Beverly Pepper Projects Foundation consolidated
The name of another internationally renowned artist is added to the extraordinary gallery of prestigious signatures
major exhibitions and contemporary artworks that have enlivened Todi over the past half century.”
“I thank the Beverly Pepper Projects Foundation,” asserts Silvano Spada
“for its tribute to the Festival with the creation of the Manifesto signed by the English artist Ian Davenport: a gesture that allows me to continue my attention to contemporary art with
authors of famous posters of some of my Festivals
Beverly was my very first fan and my social/cultural reference of my private or representative meetings in the sociality of the Todi of that time and
“We are proud,” emphasizes Elisa Veschini
President of the Beverly Pepper Projects Foundation,“ to reaffirm our prestigious partnership with the Todi Festival
an alliance that continues to grow with enthusiasm and passion
It is an honor for us to be able to work alongside a Festival that
His inspiring guidance stimulates us to continue an enlightened path that
has brought some of the greatest names in contemporary art to Todi
making this city an international point of reference for culture
We thank master Ian Davenport for accepting our invitation
to this extraordinary project that celebrates art in all its forms.”
“Ian Davenport,” recalls Marco Tonelli
curator of the project and scientific curator of the Beverly Pepper Projects Foundation,“ is one of the most important British abstract painters active since the late 1980s
and activate the gaze of both specialists and laymen
thanks to their dynamic colors and the processes of painting always in view
as if the viewer were part of the making of the work and the work something alive and still in progress
in which the passage of time and the immediacy of experience seem to constitute the substance of the painting
holding appearance and structure in balance.”
That same year he participated in the Freeze exhibition
a founding event of the Young British Artists movement
Just two years after graduation he had his first solo exhibition at Waddington Galleries in London
and in 1991 he was nominated for the Turner Prize
making him the youngest artist ever nominated for the prestigious award
Davenport has established himself on the international scene through an abstract language that investigates painterly gesture and the physicality of color
His most recent works are distinguished by lines of acrylic paint poured on sloping surfaces
creating complex textures of color and depth
Over the past decade he has intensified his graphic work
producing a large series of etchings and silkscreens
In 2006 he made Poured Lines Southwark Street
a monumental 48-meter-long mural painting on a London bridge
now among the largest permanent public works in the United Kingdom
an installation consisting of more than a thousand vertical stripes
accompanied by a limited-edition artist’s watch
for whom she hand-painted a series of porcelain plates (2016)
with whom she designed a handbag for the Lady Art project
In 2010 she participated in a residency program at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Connecticut
His works are part of important public and private collections
In Italy he is represented by Luca Tommasi Gallery in Milan
when we are told this was a dilapidated textile warehouse in its previous life
“It’s not every day that you come across a place with soaring ceilings
the defunct textile warehouse was completely run down—the ceiling
walls and structure needed significant work,” says Nikita Shahri
loves a good challenge and decided to transform the warehouse into a chic cocktail spot now known as Late Checkout
Talib ChitalwalaNo one would get the brief as she did, so the restaurateur donned the hat of a designer for the project. The co-founder of Chrome Hospitality, along with her partner Pawan Shahri, has always been deeply involved with the design of their restaurants Gigi
“With this project—our tenth venture—I wanted to push my creative boundaries even further
and transforming an old textile mill into a new cocktail bar was an exciting challenge
The piece de resistance is its soaring bar
a 30-foot rack displaying the spirits fashioned from aged wood
“The bar has been designed for interaction
and guests can hang out there and watch their cocktails being made,” says Shahri
Talib ChitalwalaRemnants of the warehouse's past life live on at Late Checkout. The industrial flooring has been retained, and the exposed brick walls have been carefully restored
“We had to be mindful of preserving the integrity of the space while making it functional for a modern restaurant
All the walls were load-bearing so we couldn’t break them down
We had to work within those constraints while still ensuring the layout felt seamless and functional,” says Shahri
where a sea of people constantly race in and out of work
Late Checkout may just make a case for you to stay a while longer

Soon after finishing your studies abroad, you joined your family business. So how did your upbringing in a reputed business family help you in taking up such responsibilities at an early age?
Did you always want to become a businesswoman and join the family business, or did you have some other plans as well?
Was it your choice to join the agro business vertical of the group? Was there any particular trigger for that? How are you adding value to this business?
Joining South City International School was certainly your choice? Wasn't it?
Yes, it was definitely my choice to join South City International School. My late grandfather always had a passion for education and strongly believed in the power of learning to uplift society. His influence, along with my personal experience as a former student at South City International School, made it feel natural to become involved in the school’s journey.
In many ways, my involvement with the school also allows me to connect with my grandfather, as I didn’t have as many opportunities to work closely with him due to my time abroad. Being part of the school feels like a continuation of his vision and values, which I am proud to help carry forward.
The education sector in the country has undergone sea changes over the years. How challenging has been your journey so far?
The education sector in India has indeed evolved significantly, and I feel fortunate that my journey has been more about embracing opportunities than facing challenges. Our overarching approach has been centered on fostering a supportive environment where students can thrive. We prioritize open communication with all stakeholders—students, parents, and staff—ensuring that we address diverse needs while setting clear boundaries.
One of the key aspects of our approach is to remain adaptable in the face of changing educational expectations and parenting styles. We recognize the importance of creating an inclusive atmosphere that nurtures not just academic growth but also personal development. Moreover, with the vast availability of information on the internet, it's essential to make learning engaging and enjoyable, helping students stay motivated and connected to the educational process.
While the journey has been largely positive, it requires continuous effort to keep everyone satisfied. Overall, I believe that our commitment to understanding and responding to our community’s evolving needs is essential in helping students reach their full potential.
Sometimes, people say there is no alternative to offline/physical classroom teaching, sometimes they say online education is the future, and sometimes people say the hybrid model is the way forward. What is your take on this?
Having navigated the hybrid learning environment during my time in America, I see value in online education. Yet, I believe high school students are still in the process of developing the skills necessary to thrive in a hybrid model. College students possess a level of maturity and experience that helps them prioritize their education, while high schoolers can easily feel overwhelmed with social interactions and extracurricular activities.
While it's important for schools to have the capacity for hybrid teaching, I feel it shouldn't be the standard approach for this age group at this moment. As technology evolves, the hybrid model might become more effective and accepted in the future, but for now, a more traditional learning approach may serve our younger students better.
What is your take on the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020's pedagogy?
The New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 marks a significant shift in India’s educational landscape, embracing a learner-centric approach that prioritizes the individual needs and interests of students. This policy prepares them for a rapidly evolving world by emphasizing adaptable skills and conceptual understanding.
One of the key strengths of the NEP is its commitment to quality education, establishing high standards for curriculum design, teacher training, and assessment practices. It also promotes inclusivity by addressing gaps in access and recognizing diverse learning needs.
Additionally, the NEP fosters holistic development by integrating co-curricular activities, sports, and vocational education, acknowledging that learning extends beyond academics. The emphasis on experiential learning encourages students to engage actively with their education, enhancing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Furthermore, the policy advocates for digital integration, recognizing technology's transformative role in enhancing educational experiences. Flexible pathways allow students to tailor their education based on interests and aptitudes, while teacher empowerment is prioritized through professional development and support. In essence, the NEP 2020 lays the groundwork for a more inclusive, engaging, and future-ready education system that aims to nurture well-rounded individuals.
What are the changes you have brought in at South City International since you took up the reins? What are your plans to take it to the next level? What are its current USPs?
At South City International School, we take pride in our secure and expansive 3.5+ acre campus, which features CCTV surveillance and state-of-the-art facilities. Our commitment to quality education is reflected in our affiliations with both the CISCE and Cambridge boards, alongside our "Unmesh" wing, which offers NIOS for specially abled children. These elements define our school’s unique selling points and demonstrate our dedication to fostering an inclusive educational environment.
To enhance our offerings, we have introduced several initiatives:
Toddler Zone: A dedicated area for children aged 2+, creating a comprehensive solution for families as well daycare facilities.
School ERP System: This implementation has streamlined communication and access for students and parents, making information more readily available.
New Clubs: We have launched initiatives focused on entrepreneurship, visual arts, and social outreach, encouraging creativity and innovation among our students.
Expanded Language Offerings: We are in progress of introducing German, French, Spanish, and Mandarin, to broaden their cultural horizons.
Curriculum Enrichment: The integration of robotics and gymnastics has enriched our students' learning journeys, while we are actively upgrading our classrooms and laboratories. Plans are also in place to introduce specialized labs for math and social sciences.
Sports Facilities Expansion: We are introducing a pickleball court and have plans to add facilities for hockey, tennis, and squash.
Looking ahead, we aspire to increase our enrollment to over 2000 students, making SCIS the top choice for families. I sincerely appreciate the unwavering support from our principal, Ms. Satabdi Bhattacharjee, who shares our vision, as well as the insights from our board of directors. Together, we aim to cultivate an enriching environment where every student can excel.
Do you have any plans to have more branches, or would you restrict yourself to only one school?
At this moment, our primary focus is on South City International School. We are dedicated to refining and enhancing every aspect of our existing institution to ensure it reaches its fullest potential. While we believe in the value of expansion, our current priority is to make SCIS the best version of itself before considering any additional branches. However, the future is always open to possibilities, and we remain flexible in our approach.
Any plans to foray into higher education or any other discipline in education, going forward? What are your scale-up/expansion plans?
At this moment, we do not have immediate plans to expand into higher education; however, we are actively exploring various avenues to enhance our current offerings. We are establishing partnerships with different consulates, which will allow us to provide more opportunities for study abroad programs.
Additionally, we aim to develop our role as a center for competitive exams like NEET and JEE, providing dedicated support for students preparing for these important milestones. While these initiatives are still in the pipeline, we are committed to implementing ideas that will enrich the educational experience for our students over time.
Our focus remains on building a strong foundation at South City International School, and as we grow, we will continue to explore opportunities for expansion in higher education and other disciplines.

It’s easy to think that this is the perfect Italian hill town
I’m in Umbria, the region that lies between Rome and Florence at Italy’s geographic center
The problem with Umbria isn’t that gems are hard to find
The region has a seemingly endless supply of utterly charming towns and picture-postcard landscapes
Umbria, like neighboring Tuscany
is covered in rolling hills quilted with cultivated fields
Umbria has been dubbed “the New Tuscany.” But I think
it is the “old” Tuscany; Umbria clings to its agricultural roots and old-time traditions
to its quiet rhythms and its cultural heritage
Umbria offers everything that Tuscany does
A glass of wine at a bar with snacks can be enjoyed for €4 to €7 ($4.60 to $8)
A plate of homemade pasta topped with prized white truffles set me back €10 ($11.50)
as did a perfectly grilled super-tender steak of local beef
Pizza and beer for two is a worthy €20 ($23) outing
you could have a pretty charming life in Umbria with a budget of €1,350 (around $1,580) a month
Real estate in this region also won’t break the bank; you can have your own Umbrian idyll for as little as $57,400
This well-kept town is one of those appealing places that is big enough to have everything you need
but small enough to maintain a sense of community
And the honey-colored brick buildings cascading down the hillside seem to gleam in the sun
The streets are often stair-stepped and sloped
(Some of Todi’s steepness is overcome with a slick funicular that whisks you up to town.)
I love Todi’s overall atmosphere; it’s got a warm aura to it and it gets my vote as the friendliest town
People seem to beam; their smiles and sing-songy buongiornos make me think they are genuinely happy there
Todi hosts annual events like a tango festival and the week-long Todi Festival
and a lovely park with tree-lined paths where I watched frolicking kids
Outside town is a swank spa resort and sophisticated wineries
I think it would be hard to be a vegetarian in Todi
though; I was lured by enticing smells of grilling meat in all quarters of town
and battalions of chickens slow-roasting over open fires are some of the mouth-watering delicacies to be savored here
As if Todi’s perfectly kept old town wasn’t enough
its setting among some spectacular woods and surprising river canyons gives it a natural appeal
It’s also in a near-perfect “triangle,” only 50 minutes from Spoleto
Todi has some surprising real estate bargains
Nice rental apartments start at just €350 a month
A nicely restored apartment in the heart of the historic center
steps to all the cafés and the gorgeous main piazza
It’s the town I would pick if I were to move to Umbria
spilling over just enough to exude hill-town ambience without being steep enough to hurt your legs
The cathedral and other churches were decorated by hometown hero Pietro Vannucci
the Renaissance master known as Il Perugino (a bit inaptly nicknamed
His most famous work is in the Sistine Chapel
but he certainly endowed his own town with many masterpieces
it’s impossible to distinguish the difference
the hills are softer and the valleys shallower
Silvery olive trees glisten in the sun; stripes of vines streak the fields
and the sunlight gives off an ethereal golden hue
including a blues festival and a tasty saffron fair
so you’ll find creamy risottos and pasta sauces with the fragrant
scrumptious wild boar sauce that’s made here
A lovely loft in a restored building in the heart of town that is bright and cozy with terra cotta floors
An ample-sized two-story townhome in the city center with two bedrooms
A house with a pool is renting for just €500 ($585) while an apartment in a palazzo complete with frescoes is listed at €650 a month ($702)
This city of about 40,000 people sits along the Tiber River
The old town is cradled in ancient protective walls and dotted with Renaissance palazzi
and civic buildings are loaded with art by heavy hitters like Raphael
The town center is lively and lived-in; it’s also level
lots of folks were pedaling around on bikes
along with plenty of pasted-up notices for upcoming festivals and exhibitions
so be sure to try some strangozzi pasta with white and black truffles
Some restaurants have a full page of dishes bearing the prized tubers

Here's How I Made The MoveLearn the story of how I decided to buy my second home in Italy
specifically in one of the most stunning villages the country has to offer
Faith Katunga•Jan 11
Although every location was lovely in its own way
Picture this: narrow cobblestone streets winding through a medieval village adorned with vibrant flowers and ivy-covered walls
The scent of freshly baked bread and aromatic espresso wafting from local cafes
The gentle hum of Italian conversations punctuated by laughter—this was Spello
We’d heard of Spello’s beauty and wanted to see it for ourselves
Little did we know that this charming village would cast a spell on us that day
It was as if the town itself was whispering to us
inviting us to become a part of its richness.
Let’s rewind to the COVID-19 era when masks were the rage and making eye contact with another human being was akin to sneezing in their face
We yearned for Umbria’s verdant landscape
I fantasized about strolling through the olive tree fields and picking wild asparagus
While still primarily located in Milan and a city girl at heart
I had grown to love the charms of small-town living
the countryside looked monotonous and a place for retirement.
Our initial curiosity about purchasing a second home in Spello had transformed into genuine interest
and we decided to explore the idea further
That infamous Italian bureaucracy is no laughing matter
nor is the prejudice that sometimes comes with it
was the rock we needed on this venture.
One thing we quickly realized was that buying property in a picturesque village like Spello is not as daunting as it may seem
We had fallen in love with a particular house online and wanted to see it
we had purchased a second home in Italy and were busy renovating it.
our dream of owning a home in Spello has become a reality
with its terracotta roof and a small garden
is our sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life in Milan
Thanks to its friendly people and enduring charm
we have found a community and a place to recharge our batteries
Owning a home in Spello has also opened up countless opportunities for us
We’ve become a part of local initiatives and joined the annual Infiorata Flower Festival.
If you’ve ever dreamed of owning a home in one of Italy’s most beautiful villages like Spello
Even while owning a home these days is a privilege pretty much everywhere—and I won’t argue against that—it is possible to do so with the correct support
Our story proves that a single-day trip can sometimes turn into a life-changing adventure
and a charming Italian village can become your second home

ShareSaveCommentReal EstateForbes Global Properties1700s Villa Offers A Peaceful Refuge Near The Medieval Town Of Todi, ItalyByLauren Beale
Yet the property is close to shopping and services. The center of the medieval hilltop town of Todi is about 7 kilometers or slightly more than 4 miles away, according to Cinzia Romanelli, chief executive and cofounder of Building Heritage.
A secondary structure that can be used as a pool house or lounge sits near the main house.
“Todi is a very quiet and secluded city because it holds no more than 15,000 to 20,000 people,” Romanelli says. “The administrative facilities are all conveniently located in the heart of the town while the ancillary services remain outside the town walls.”
While it may be quiet, there’s still nightlife. “Most of Todi's nightclubs are located in the historic center or just outside,” she says, “where you will find pubs, lounges and wine bars.”
The dining room shares a two-sided fireplace with the kitchen.
The appeal of the villa is evident throughout the 600 square meters (about 6,500 square feet) of living space.
A central fireplace anchors the beamed ceiling living room. The kitchen and formal dining room are connected by a two-sided fireplace that serves both spaces. Original details include polished terracotta floors, a wood stove and outdoor sinks.
The kitchen offers modern convenience with a rustic vibe.
The five bedrooms all have private bathrooms, and the vaulted-ceiling primary suite features a fireplace and bathtub. Exposed stone walls add a rustic vibe. Windows bring in views of nearby fields and, in the distance, Todi.
Across a stretch of lawn and close to the main house is a 100-square-meter (328-square-foot) secondary guest or pool house overlooking the heated outdoor swimming pool, which has an attached eye-shaped spa. Large sofas and a central fireplace create a welcome space, which has its own kitchen. A wood-fired oven, grill and trellis-covered al fresco dining space sits right outside.
Exposed stonework and wooden beams enhance the character of the interiors
The gardens encompass 3,000 square meters or about three-quarters of an acre
The swimming pool takes in views of the Umbria countryside

Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) is the way communities have historically developed around the world
with clusters of human development near key transportation routes like waterways and rail lines
assuming people within ½ mile will walk to access transit.
Creating more density near transit will be critical as Washington plans to accommodate future population growth
TOD is the practice of planning for greater development intensity near transit stops
such as mixed-use buildings with employment
public transit means transit that accommodates commuting and use as a primary transportation option
TOD supports human-scaled compact urban development – clustering homes
all within easy access to high quality public transit service
Many agencies in Washington are already working on TOD initiatives

alternating visits to villages and cities of art with stops at craft breweries
Interest in beer has exploded in Italy for some time now
over XNUMX beers were produced in our country
and many of these are the fruit of the work of craft breweries and microbreweries
solo in Umbria There are more than thirty craft breweries. To find out their contact details, just view thespecific section of the Umbria tourist promotion board website
All take advantage of spring water and use malts from native grains
If we place the Umbrian breweries on the map we see that they are distributed throughout the region
It is therefore possible to connect them together by creating routes that allow you not only to "go for beer"
naturalistic and food and wine beauties of the Green Heart of Italy
In this article we propose a ring between villages and breweries in the central-southern area of Umbria
The city is often considered only for its steelworks, to which a museum is dedicated inside the CAOS - Opificio Siri Arts Center
the historic center is interesting and maintains ancient vestiges and Renaissance buildings
despite the serious destruction caused by the Allied bombings during the Second World War
You cannot help but visit the tomb of Saint Valentine
located in a beautiful baroque basilica a little outside the center
is considered the patron saint of lovers for having united in marriage a Roman centurion and a young Christian woman
Seven kilometers from the center the Velino river flows into the Nera giving rise to the Marmore Falls (which we talked about here)
Created by the Romans three centuries before Christ by diverting the course of the Velino to reclaim the Rieti plain
they are the highest artificial waterfalls in Europe: 165 meters in three jumps
The name comes from the calcium carbonate salts present on the rocks that make them similar to white marble
The waterfall area is included in a park crossed by various paths with two paid entrances
the lower belvedere and the upper belvedere
Near the lower belvedere there is an equipped area for campers with 22 pitches
Il Bro Brewery of Terni produces “live” beers with high fermentation
without preservatives and refermented for about twenty days in the bottle with their yeasts
From Terni to Spoleto it is about thirty kilometers on the ancient Via Flaminia
the profile of the fourteenth-century Rocca Albornoziana immediately stands out
located at 400 meters above sea level on the Sant'Elia hill
it is easily accessible thanks to the system of escalators that connect the historic center to the lower part of the city
Internationally famous for the Festival of the Two Worlds
Spoleto has also been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011 with the Basilica of San Salvatore
a rare example of Lombard architecture built between the end of the XNUMXth and the beginning of the XNUMXth century
The building was damaged by the earthquake and is still being restored
so it cannot be accessed: you have to make do with peeking inside through a large window
only thirteen kilometers separate Spoleto from the Tempietto del Clitunno in Campello
When a passion becomes a business. In Spoleto the Caber Beer It was born almost for fun as a home brewery
Today it produces about twenty types of top-fermented beers in Belgian and English style with barley grown on its own farm
The brewery is completely powered by solar energy; it is open to visits and tastings and there is also a company shop
Spoleto is the entry point to visit the green and wild Valnerina. Travelling along the SS 685 in Cerreto di Spoleto you turn right to reach Cascia, with the sanctuary of Santa Rita, and Norcia, with the famous basilica of San Benedetto. Unfortunately, the 2016 earthquake caused serious damage to the artistic and cultural heritage of the two cities enclosed in the Sibillini Mountains National Park
and a visit has a strong symbolic and concrete value
You can contribute to the restart by purchasing the renowned typical products of the area
including the inevitable cured meats: it is not for nothing that the term norcineria derives from Norcia
It is easier to go back towards Cerreto and pass through Sellano
where the very high Tibetan bridge that connects Sellano to the hamlet of Montesanto awaits us
since you walk in a harness on a narrow walkway half a kilometer long located at a height of 175 meters
A short itinerary leads to the discovery of the ancient canals and waterfalls
The abundance of water has made the town famous for its paper mills: the paper used for the first printed edition of the Divine Comedy came from this Umbrian town
Ut laetificet cor, to cheer the heart. This is the motto of the Nursia Beer produced in the Monastery of San Benedetto in Monte in Norcia
the city of the founder of the Benedictines
with an amber color and a strong flavor: the brewery's income serves to support the activities of the abbey
over the centuries wars and earthquakes have had a significant impact on the appearance of Foligno
Destruction and reconstruction have followed one another but what has never changed is the typical Roman layout with Corso Cavour and Via Mazzini
Foligno is beautiful and easy to explore on foot: the main buildings are concentrated around Piazza della Repubblica
an equestrian competition between the city's districts dating back to 1448
accompanied by a procession in period costume
with many small restaurants and grocery stores
a sweet made of elongated and rolled dough filled with apples
walnuts and cocoa; and if you want to make an enemy in Foligno
tell them that rocciata looks like a strudel
has been one of the most famous places in the city for over a century
It offers delicious take-away sandwiches and is also a bistro
Speaking of typical products: about twenty kilometers from the center
the hamlet of Colfiorito is famous for its red potatoes and lentils
a special Belgian ale beer produced with water from Rasiglia
one of the towns – together with Pale and Foligno – where there is a sales and tasting point
Travelling along the highway from Foligno towards Assisi
a few kilometres before we come across Spello
In Roman times it was a very important center as evidenced by the numerous remains
the list of things to see is long and the place certainly deserves a stop
Saint Francis and Saint Clare were born in the town that lives in their name even if
The historic center is a concentration of wonders
Starting with the Basilica of Saint Francis
the cycle of twenty-eight frescoes by Giotto with the Stories of the Life of Saint Francis leaves you speechless
On the slopes of Mount Subasio stands the Eremo delle Carceri
but a secluded and solitary place where Francis and his companions used to retreat to pray
Immersed in a forest of centuries-old holm oaks
taking advantage of the unequipped space located nearby
Founded in 2012, 7 kilometers from Assisi, the company Hermitage beer produces over 40.000 liters of beer per month divided into eight varieties
The brewery carries out particular research on yeasts and experiments on spices and fermentations that have earned Enrico
co-founder with a degree in Agricultural and Environmental Biotechnology
Assisi is the turning point. We pass Perugia and take the E45 south towards Torgiano, a town famous for its oil and wine. The typical local products are dedicated to Lungarotti Foundation Museums MOO and MUVIT and the project Scultori a Brufa
a theme park with thirty works created by internationally renowned contemporary sculptors
Continuing on the SP 403 a detour takes us to Cannara
If among the things to see there is the Infiorata di Pentecoste
among those to taste there is the Cipolla di Cannara
included in the list of traditional agri-food products
games of skill are started including the Ruzzolone
a tradition that consists of rolling cheeses through the streets of the center
Back on the SP403 we find, one after the other, the villages of Bevagna and Montefalco (which we talked about here)
who even built a river port there: it was the base of a connecting road that led directly to Rome using the waters of the Clitunno and Topino rivers that flow into the Tiber
the church of San Michele and that of San Silvestro are two jewels of Romanesque architecture
Say Montefalco and you immediately think of Sagrantino
But the name is also linked to great artists such as the fifteenth-century painter Benozzo Gozzoli
whose canvases are found in the Pieve di San Fortunato and in the museum complex of San Francesco together with works by Perugino
Located in Torgiano, the Perugia Brewery owes its name to an old brewery opened in the capital in 1875 and closed in 1926
including the title of “Brewery of the Year” 2016
a new facility has been opened with a taproom
a place with a view of the production open every day where you can taste and buy the beers
Guided tours are available on Fridays and Saturdays by reservation
From Montefalco to Todi you travel about thirty kilometers on the Regional Road 316
the Provincial Roads 414 and 418 and the State Road 79 bis
we see from below the historic center still enclosed by the bastions
The Middle Ages was the historical period of greatest splendor of the city and this is evidenced
by the Piazza del Popolo and the Duomo dell'Annunziata
In the city of the friar and poet Jacopone, the Todi underground
More than three kilometers of tunnels and galleries
hundreds of wells from various eras and dozens of pre-Roman
A highly engineered hydraulic system used until 1925 for the supply and drainage of water that accumulated underground
the Irish artist Brian O'Doherty and his wife Barbara Novak have transformed their home by painting it entirely with bright colors and geometric shapes
a path immersed in greenery with twenty sculptures that tell the story of the American artist's career from 1960 to the XNUMXs
take the State Road 448 and then the 205 in Baschi
The route passes through woods and olive groves along the Corbara Lake
an artificial basin of about ten square kilometers in a splendid valley within the protected area of the Tiber River Park
When you are in Todi don't forget to stop by Cantina Roccafiore
The symbol of the city is the cathedral with its Gothic façade: linked to this splendid monument is the automaton that strikes the hours on the Torre di Maurizio
on the corner with Piazza del Duomo; it was the first built in Italy in 1348
A strategic landing place for visiting the city and its surroundings is the Battistelli rest area
located a few steps from the funicular to the historic center
About ten kilometers from Orvieto, the Centrolitri Brewery di Baschi produces artisanal unfiltered and unpasteurized beers refermented in the bottle
It offers beers inspired by Umbrian culture and flavors using local water and enhancing the territory
It was one of the eight Umbrian breweries to stand out in the 2022 edition of the Cerevisia Award
supported by the Ministry of Agricultural Policies
It offers guided tours and direct sales at the headquarters
take the A1 to Attigliano and then the Provincial Road 31
About two kilometers from the village is the Rio Grande Basin urban river park with its trekking paths that wind through the woods
Amelia is located in an area with a high agricultural vocation with numerous typical products: dried figs
the small fava cottòra hand-picked as in the past and Vin Santo
But there is also much to see in the center
starting with the Roman cisterns accessible from Piazza Matteotti
an underground complex that tells the story of the city from the Romans to the mid-18th century
passing through the dark times of the Inquisition
It is a young company: the master brewer Alessandro Di Stefano attended the CERB courses at the University of Perugia and in 2017, helped by his brother Marco, he opened his own plant. The Amerino Brewery has also received numerous awards for experimentation (for example by adding figs) and reinterpretation of various beer styles
Birrificio Amerino products are also noted for their particularly colorful and decorated cans and bottle labels

A son of old Napa relocates to an underrated corner of Italy
Rollie Heitz is not the first American to move to Todi—a stunner of a medieval hilltop town (pop
17,000) in Central Italy’s Umbria region that has often been cited as one of the most pleasant towns on earth
Yet from a wine perspective, Heitz, 64, who was raised in Napa and helped grow his family’s legendary Heitz Cellar (now under new ownership)
is arguably the town’s most notable resident
picked up stakes and sold their house in Napa County to move to a new home and small vineyard at Tenuta Montorsolo
nestled on a bluff with dramatic views over the Umbrian countryside
Now he’s working on the fourth vintage of his Concinnate wine label in the 12-year-old Todi appellation
where the primary red varieties are Sangiovese and Merlot and the main white variety is Grechetto
“There’s a huge potential here,” enthuses Heitz
as he looks over his vineyard of 2.5 acres—half of which was replanted this spring
So how and why did the Heitzes land in Umbria for their semi-retirement years
they weren’t Italophiles or regular European travelers
They are “old Napa” folks whose roots (and those of their children) are among California’s pioneering wine families
The move represents Heitz’s second big career move away from his familial nest
after working at Heitz Cellar for nearly 20 years and overseeing estate vineyard growth from 30 to 350 acres
making 1,000 cases a year of single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
as well as rosé from Grenache and Viognier
Then a decade ago, Heitz was visited by Ev Thomas, a California artist who had started making wine in earnest near Todi. (Read my column, “The Tale of Terramante.”) Heitz says Thomas was particularly interested in Midsummer Cellars at the time because “it was the smallest winery he could find,” at about 500 square feet
and he and Sally began visiting Thomas and his Italian wife
“What they were doing here was appealing to say the least,” Heitz comments
The Heitzes were smitten by the rural Umbrian lifestyle—more laid-back and less famous than in neighboring Tuscany—and began casually real-estate shopping
they visited Montorsolo and what had been a bed-and-breakfast with a separate garage-sized winery
the small vineyard and many more acres of forest
we decided we should make an offer,” says Heitz
Pushing them out of Napa was the economic reality of the boutique-winery rental market
but the congestion and rents were getting so high that we would always be in a position of being renters.”
They shuttered their winery and sold off the wine
as well as their house and home vineyard in Deer Park
he produced varietal Sangiovese as both a “crisp red” and a rosé
which he says is “the richest variety here—it’s been a bit of a surprise.”
He made Cabernet Sauvignon by harvesting the 2.5-acre vineyard of near-neighbors from Norway: “It doesn’t have the might of a Napa Cab
Heitz also experimented with Central Italian grapes like Pecorino and wrestled with Montorsolo’s Sagrantino—Umbria’s big red variety that stars in Montefalco
“It’s just not my grape,” Heitz says with a shake of the head
First there was a small house fire (from an overheated battery of a recharging drill) when they were away
The smoke damage forced them out of their home into a rental for a couple months
just after returning to their home in early 2020
“COVID arrived and threw a rather large wrench in everything.”
With a full winery and reduced trade from tourists and local restaurants
Heitz sold that year’s rosé to a distillery
“I guess it became hand-sanitizer,” he says dryly
“and that was too bad because it was really nice.”
The travel restrictions also posed personal setbacks—like having to watch their son’s wedding via Zoom
In Heitz’s tightly packed, one-man winery, every square inch counts—right down to the space-saving, cuboid steel fermentation tanks he uses instead of cylindrical ones. Reds are aged 15 months in stacked French oak tonneau and barriques
“Every year the barrels do get heavier,” Heitz quips
Concinnate, labeled with a golden bear reminiscent of the California flag, sits at the value end of boutique wines. Direct-to-consumer prices listed on the website range from €10 (about $11) for his 2020 Sangiovese rosato to €18 (about $20) for his Todi Merlot. Heitz has been experimenting with shipping to the U.S.
When I visited the Heitzes, a heat wave had gripped Central Italy after Rollie and his vineyard hand had planted new vinestock, requiring them to hand water hundreds of nascent plants daily. While keeping a Merlot and Sangiovese plot, he had pulled out Sagrantino and some diseased Sangiovese to make room for Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and a small amount of Viognier.
“We want to get it working so it’s a little easier to manage,” he says. “Once the vineyards are all established, we should be caught up.”
Heitz has discovered some dramatic differences between Umbria and Napa. In the vineyard here, with its poor, rocky soils and a climate marked by summer heat and rains, he has found he has a shorter growing season. “It’s a fairly warm climate and you’d expect acidities to drop, but that’s not the case,” he says. “You get really good acidities here.”
When it comes to the bureaucracy of winemaking, both Napa and Umbria have their complications. Italian law, he observes, is particularly restrictive about the handling of wine pomace after pressing—all but requiring sale to distilleries.
On the other hand, he says, winery licensing in Italy is generally much easier. “Here alcohol is not viewed as the great evil it is in the States,” Heitz says with a chuckle. “Nor is it viewed as a great revenue source.”

Situated in the central Italian province of Perugia
students from the Ciuffelli Agricultural Institute of Todi – the country’s oldest agricultural school – are returning to a rather unique classroom this autumn
The so-called Green Room replaces the ceiling with Umbria’s blue skies and boasts rows of olive trees instead of walls. While the country was in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic last spring
students took their final exams in this outdoor classroom
we had an idea to create an area at its core where they could further develop the knowledge acquired in the field,” the director of the farm
“The Green Room is located at the heart of the farming estate managed by the institute,” he added

which allows students to learn from a central position in the context of the territory
with the Tiber River below and Mount Subasio
“Located in the midst of our olive trees and overlooking the valley
the Green Room turned out to be the solution to organize the final exams last June
in a healthy environment and in compliance with the measures imposed to curb the spread of Covid-19,” Santucci said
In the aftermath of a three-month lockdown
remained closed for the rest of the term and moved lessons online
Students of Ciuffelli and similar institutes could at least take solace in taking their final exam outdoors
all the administrative formalities could be handled easily,” Santucci said
adding that during the summer the space was used to screen movies
“The success of this initiative encourages us to use the Green Room even more often than before
in which outdoor activities are being encouraged.”

Since 2014, a small collection of olive varieties of Umbrian origin

another 4,000 olive trees have been restored by the institute and become the centerpiece of its mission
“We run an educational farm that organizes environmental and agri-food activities, including olive oil production, for about 3,000 children each year,” Santucci said. “Also, we operate as a social farm that
In addition to promoting local olive varieties
the institute also manages a collection of olive trees from other countries in the Mediterranean basin

The plants come from a larger collection of the olive germplasm gathered and preserved by the Institute for Agricultural and Forest Systems in the Mediterranean of the National Research Council (CNR) of Perugia

The property also includes a vineyard and wine cellar, a cheese factory, a honey laboratory, an animal husbandry facility, a botanical park, orchards dedicated to the study of plants at risk of genetic erosion, and an oil mill used to produce a high-quality extra virgin olive oil

has since yesterday seen the presence of the columns of the American artist Beverly Pepper (Brooklyn
1922): these are four monumental sculptures
which constitute a re-edition of the intervention that Beverly Pepper carried out in 1979 and which was entitled Todi Columns
thus soar again in the very center of the medieval city."The Todi Columns,“ says Beverly Pepper
”were a unique event for that time and have remained in the memory of the citizens who still
about the sculptures and tell me we were not ready
I would like to give the city of Todi a memory of its experiences
the columns have been refabricated and will be installed again in the square after 40 years." The history of the installation
continued: the sculptures were in fact exhibited in the United States
during the International Sculpture Conference and at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York in 1987
In the 1990s they returned to Italy for an exhibition in Venice on the occasion of the 1996 Biennale
starring in Pepper’s solo show at Forte Belvedere
The artist later donated the works to the Venice Civic Museums
which then permanently installed them in the courtyard of Spazio Thetis in the Arsenale
historian of modern art at Princeton University
emphasized the novelty of her works: “Beverly Pepper undoes certain worn-out clichés about women’s art that might force the qualities of her art into an intimist dimension
Her work does not fit any of the already outdated stereotypes of female vulnerability or passivity
with aspects indistinguishable from the work of her male colleagues
Her courage and energy are becoming legendary.”
