Luisa Neubauer is a climate justice activist
My hometown owes its story to a massive glacier that covered the entirety of northern Germany during the last ice age
Beside and on this water rose the city of Hamburg
by the good fortune of being the last European mainland stop before the North Sea
the horns of the gigantic container ships passing just a few hundred metres away—all of that on repeat made up my childhood summer days
And we didn't ask why; it was just not allowed
washed into the river from Hamburg’s overfertilized farmland after rainy days
I learned that the container ships operating in the river caused deadly currents
which increased with the growth of globalized container shipping
when I learned how the uphill battle between my hometown’s ecology and its economy was manifested in my childhood playground
There was another thing we noticed that was a bit odd
The vast majority of the kids at my school would cycle to school each morning
sweating on the last hilly part of the journey
so we would find ourselves trapped between a busy sidewalk on the one side
and honking school buses and rushing cars on the other
We would sigh with relief as we arrived at the school gates
We adapted over time: sometimes we would walk our bikes for the most stressful parts of the journey
sometimes we would get to school early to avoid the worst of the traffic
Hundreds of those mornings passed before we considered that maybe it was the infrastructure
I was experiencing an urban environment that had been built with neither children nor nature in mind
I was surrounded by the kind of infrastructure that suggested if something felt wrong to us
My childhood taught me what it looks like when urban spheres eat each other up
creating a subconscious yet omnipresent tension between the adults
the natural environment and the built environment
None of this is unique; quite the opposite─it resembles dynamics we can see around the world
often in even more exploitative and exhausting forms
More than half the world’s population lives in urban environments
which are often the places experiencing some of the worst consequences of the accelerating global climate crisis
tensions and unresolved crises will accelerate and fuel each other
It isn't always easy to imagine what the climate crisis really means
Florida and its experiences with a recent record-breaking hurricane
in every corner of the urbanized world we find glimpses of a climate future that is yet to come
We are witnessing the extremes that could become baselines for a century of catastrophic records
We don't have to make up new worlds to understand what a climate disaster future could mean for us─all it takes is to not look away from what the world is telling us already
And so the real challenge might be to imagine how things could go differently
What might it look like for us to take a different path that doesn’t lead to more and more radical disasters but
Looking back to little Luisa playing on the polluted riverfront
it is quite easy to understand that urban infrastructure that is harmful for nature tends to be harmful for children too
It is also easy to see how young dreams of a better world are stifled by infrastructure that implies change is impossible
A world that teaches us it is humans who must evolve around the built environment will never inspire young people to think big and imagine different futures
It inherently disables agency and dries out opportunities to seek change
What if cities didn’t silence their youngest inhabitants but instead listened to them
What if they inspired citizens to challenge the status quo and take their own needs seriously
What if cities were created around synergies between their different spheres
instead of reinforcing tensions and trade-offs
realized that something was going wrong in our little world
But once the initial thought of potential change in our urban environment was planted
We had never interacted with municipal infrastructure planning authorities
had never thought about the cost of a bike lane
or the conflicts between neighbouring inhabitants who were asked to let go of a few square metres of their front yards
we had decided that we would not return to traffic-jammed mornings
and the idea of leaving them behind had already become irresistible
local consultations and political lobbying to push our local officials to invest in a bike path
It was unconventional for youth to engage in local politics and in what would later be called “climate action”
That bike lane ended up being the first moment of over a decade of climate activism for me
And the more time I spend in climate spaces of all kinds
reaching from my neighbourhood all the way to the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP)
the more I am convinced that any urban area
town or city whose young people are excluded from finding answers to climate change is working against itself
It is not only that solutions for children tend to work out for climate and nature too
but also that the ability to think big tends to be a characteristic of younger generations
whose members have not yet been conditioned to routinely glorify the status quo
There is good news: the youth climate justice movement has officially declared that we do not intend to wait until someone invites us to make decisions affecting our own present and future
We are going to create space for ourselves at the table
we have a right to climate justice and a right to be safe
We see leadership from young people who are not only taking to the streets but are remaining there to continue the struggle
Years after I stopped playing at the beach
but my childhood made me become an activist
And now it is up to all of us to decide whether we are going to watch as the times change us
or if we’re going to go out and change the times ourselves

a fresco important to its city and its inhabitants
a fresco that has been revived thanks to careful restoration
We are talking about the restoration of the fresco of the Madonna and Child with Saints
a Renaissance work located in the Church of Santa Chiara in Urbania
which was the subject of an intervention promoted by the Soprintendenza Archeologia
Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the Provinces of Ancona and Pesaro and Urbino and made possible thanks to a 9.000 euros through the Art Bonus decree
ranking fifth in the national final of the Art Bonus 2024 competition
The restoration work was designed and directed by the Superintendency itself
In addition to the preservation of the fresco
the restoration is part of a broad project to protect the heritage of the Church of St
financed by the Worship Buildings Fund starting in 2019.We are located in one of the most beautiful areas of Montefeltro: Urbania
is the city of the Ubaldini family from the noble ducal milieau
elevated to the rank of diocese and city by Pope Urban VIII in whose honor it changed its name
is dotted with its elegant noble buildings and twenty-two places of worship including churches
oratories and convents: this is where the Renaissance fresco is located
"The restoration work on the Madonna and Child with Saints of Santa Chiara ranked fifth in Italy out of more than 200 projects submitted to the Art Bonus 2024 competition," recalls architect Cecilia Carlorosi
Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the provinces of Ancona and Pesaro and Urbino
and the professionalism of the Soprintendenza officials and restorers led to this result
the Art Bonus has proven to be an effective tool for the protection and enhancement of our country’s heritage
also fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors and promoting strategic partnerships with which restoration work can be financed.”
The fresco occupies the left wall of the church hall and was discovered in 1977 by Monsignor Corrado Leonardi
under a 1631 painting by Simone Cantarini depicting theImmaculate Conception
The concealment of the painting occurred in the first half of the 17th century during a renovation ordered by Duke Francesco Maria II Della Rovere
Although the fresco has always been recognized as a work of great artistic value
although the restoration seems to confirm the historical tradition that has long attributed it to Timoteo Viti (Urbino
It has recently been suggested that the hand was that of an artist of the first half of the 16th century with Mannerist influences traceable to Giustino Episcopi
the style of the painting highlight a balance between architecture and landscape typical of the Urbino school
with similarities to other works by Viti and references to Renaissance painting
the idea that it may be a work by Viti is back in vogue
“The fresco,” explains art historian Francesca Farina
on the left wall of the hall below a 17th-century altarpiece; it depicts a typical Renaissance Sacred Conversation
with Madonna and Child among saints and characters connected to the Clarian community
lead us to recognize in it the hand of Timoteo Viti
a painter from Urbino who was an associate of Raphael
and who may have worked on it around 1510.”
The subject of the fresco is a classic Renaissance Sacred Conversation
the Madonna sits on a throne with the Child in her arms
surrounded by saints who reflect the link with the community of the Poor Clares
Ursula and the 11,000 Virgin Martyrs are depicted
The identification of the figure in cardinal’s robes has also been the subject of debate
but currently the most accepted theory points to him as Cardinal Bessarion
theologian and cardinal protector of the Franciscan Order
characterized by a long white mustache and a full beard
“The work,” clarifies architect Biagio De Martinis
“led to the complete functional recovery for worship activities and the restoration of the roofing
and the arrangement of the church façade.”
Time and moisture had compromised the stability of the fresco
Deterioration of the masonry had caused detachments
while color alterations and abrasions obscured its legibility
The restoration therefore began with a meticulous analysis of the state of conservation
followed by photographic and graphic documentation
Pictorial retouching was carried out with watercolor glazes
and in this way the chromatic unity was restored without altering the originality of the work
One of the most interesting aspects of the restoration was the discovery of traces of the original coloring of the Virgin’s mantle
a portion of azurite emerged on the left shoulder of the Madonna
revealing that the mantle was originally an intense blue
the pigment had degraded and had left clearly visible the underlying morellone
a brown base to which the blue was dry-applied
The painstaking work of restoring the Madonna and Child with Saints in the Church of Santa Chiara in Urbania has thus made it possible to rediscover rather unprecedented specifics and to renew the link between the painting and the community that guards it
The fresco restoration project thus aims to demonstrate that the artistic heritage of the past remains a living reality in the present
made so by the joint efforts of institutions

What to Do in the Le Marche Town of Urbania
Infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
Force Urbania price starts at ₹ 30.51 Lakh and top model price goes upto ₹ 37.21 Lakh
Urbania is offered in 8 variants - the base model of Urbania is 3615WB 14Str and the top model Force Urbania 4400WB 13Str
If your entire family is together in today's world
even if they are going on a picnic or for a function
because it has become a benchmark for family MPVs
But I can guarantee you that you are forgetting an option in the range of Rs 30-35 lakhs
and 10 members of your family can sit in it and go comfortably
So can Urbania become the next ‘car’ for your big family
or a customised ride for your small family
or will one or two Innovas be better for you?
Now it is obvious that you must be thinking why am I showing you a commercial car
and your family will not travel in any traveller
which means that you can also register it privately
9 passengers plus driver is the maximum limit of any car to register it on a white plate
this Urbania is made on a monocoque chassis like a car
you can also customise the cabin as per your needs
you don't get a simple key like a traveller
which also comes with lock and unlock switches
there is no passive keyless entry request sensor on the door
The good thing is that you can also turn on the hazards by pressing the key
the intensity of these headlamps is not that good
its height and the entire glass panel is its highlight
These are made of steel and have a wheel cap on them
But the good thing is that you get disc brakes on all four wheels
The good thing is that you get LED tail lamps here
And the offset number plate looks a bit off
this Urbania looks a lot like Ford Transit
Which is a very good thing because it is a very good-looking van
like a black colour with black tinted glasses and black wheels
there was always a little problem in going to the back seat
You had to go through the front door by folding the seat
And then you have an easy step to go inside
a light has also been given here to aid in the dark
The height here is so much that you can easily walk in this car without ducking
The front seats and the last row seats get a lot of legroom because of the wheel well
The least amount of legroom is in the middle row - so let's talk about these
which helps you avoid fatigue on long distances
The seat back also has a bit of contouring - which keeps you comfortable
The good thing is that you can also recline these seats to a large extent
you also get fully adjustable armrests as well.
The windows are huge and because of this - a lot of heat comes in
the air conditioning of this car is excellent
You get separate controls to control the rear air conditioner and the front air conditioner
And when it blows very cold air to cool down the cabin quickly
Which can be adjusted completely or can also be closed
every seat has its own individual cabin lights
every seat has its own USB chargers and every seat has its own bottle holders
But there is no shortage of possibilities in Urbania
You can upgrade these seats by giving them better foam or add better covers or armrest
However - if you want to turn it into a caravan - there is no limit on customization
You can leave these front seats and put two big captain seats in the back along with a folding seat bed
You can customise this whole cabin according to your requirements
the range of customisation can vary from affordable to very expensive
It is very easy to get in and out of Urbania because there is a side step with its own light along with ergonomically placed grab handles
The cabin is also designed like a car and not like any truck or bus
The steering is completely straight the way it is in cars and this driver's seat is customisable with height
the steering wheel also adjusts for tilt and reach
And then comes its instrument cluster which is of course analogue
But in the middle you get a digital screen where all the vital information is given like trip and efficiency
all the other controls whether they are lights or AC stay within your reach making the cabin very ergonomic.
its ORVMs are manually adjustable and there are no manual adjustment levers inside
If there was a cabin conversation mirror here
it could have been easier to talk to the family.
There is no shortage of practicality and storage here either
there is space in the middle to keep your phone and wallet
the passenger has his own phone slot with a charger
and the driver and passenger both have covered storage
If this is not enough - you also have a glove box and double decker door pocket which are massive
you are going to get limited features in the Urbina
You have power windows for both the driver and passengers with one touch down
cabin lighting and finally a 7-inch touch screen with wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
This comes with a two-speaker sound system
the speaker blanks are installed throughout the cabin so can easily be upgraded.
you might feel that the safety features have been ignored
You get airbags for the passenger and driver
And if you are going to take this car to a mountainous area or a snowy area - you get the convenience of auto hold
And as I mentioned before - disc brakes on all four wheels so its braking performance is also impressive
then there should be no shortage of luggage space
this Urbania is its short wheelbase version
which means that you get very little space behind the last row
you can keep some suitcases and bags under the seats
But if there are a lot of big suitcases in the family
then they will not be able to fit here easily
you will have to install a carrier on top if it is legal
you get only the space to keep overnight bags behind the last row
But the best thing is that you get a medium wheelbase Urbania instead of a short wheelbase - the last row space is completely empty in the 9 plus driver configuration
You can keep as many things as you want and in fact
Force itself sells a luggage rack where you can also stack your luggage properly
The longer wheelbase version is Rs 3 - 3.5 lakhs more expensive than this model.
When you start driving for the first time - you feel a little nervous
you start to understand that it is like a very big SUV
the clutch is very light and the vision outside is excellent
And while the gearbox is conveniently placed
it sometimes causes a problem shifting in first and second
If Force would have given an automatic transmission with the Urbania - it would have been very easy to drive for private buyers
The 2.6-litre diesel engine here is derived from a Mercedes-Benz engine
Now the engine that was derived from is very old and that can be felt
The refinement is not very good and the engine is also fairly audible
The 350Nm torque means that even if you stay one gear up
You don't have to shift much in the city and commutes can easily be done in 2nd
the floorboard for the driver is of a very good size
There is no dead pedal here but the seat is mounted tall
you can easily keep your feet on the ground
It can return 11 to 14kmpl and when you are driving it in the city
depending on how much load you are driving with.
While you don't get the smooth ride that you get in SUVs or MPVs
Even on bad roads when you go a little slowly
the van doesn't move much and keeps the occupants at ease
And while in the front of the cabin you can hear the engine
You can't take it to the mall because the height is a problem for mall entrances
it doesn't fit in the parking spots of regular cars
So you have to park it outside the mall or the restaurant
The good thing is that it has a high-mounted reverse parking camera which makes things easier.
When it comes to handling - the Urbania behaves just like a big SUV
Body roll remains in control and changing lanes on the highway feels natural
Even taking a high-speed turn won’t make you nervous
The Force Urbania is indeed a very capable van
its very big which makes it very difficult to find parking anywhere
then you will have to buy its medium wheelbase version where you can easily install a luggage rack at the back
then it would have been even easier to drive.
the other aspects of the Urbania are quite impressive
The most surprising thing is that it is a very big monocoque structure which makes its driving dynamics and comfort feel like a large SUV
If you were looking for a van to make into a camper - then it is very difficult to get a better choice than this
your whole family will comfortably go in the Urbania together laughing
then the Force Urbania is exactly what you need
If your family has outgrown MPVs and you need a bigger alternative - the Force Urbania might be exactly what you need
The Force Urbania is available only in the Diesel fuel option
The mileage of the Force Urbania is 11 kmpl

"onion oracles" have been using the root vegetable as a form of divination to peer into the future and predict the weather
Every year on the evening of 24 January in the central Italian town of Urbania
local schoolteacher Emanuela Forlini cuts a yellow onion into quarters
She then separates out 12 wedges that will form the basis of her local weather predictions for the year ahead
She lays out a slice for each month of the year on her kitchen chopping board
the second February and so on through December
Sprinkling each piece with a generous pinch of salt
As the first rays of sun appear on the 25th
looking for signs supposedly sent by a saint in the salt's reaction with the onion – are the wedges wet or dry
she creates her annual weather forecast for another year
published in local newspapers and on television for the people of Urbania and the surrounding province of Pesaro and Urbino
Forlini has been practising this ritual for the past 28 years
carrying on the tradition from her father Anselmo
While Italy is home to a handful of other onion readers
Forlini has become the country's go-to expert
often featured in regional and national media throughout the years
essentially making Urbania the spiritual home of this tradition
not out of a strong belief in her own predictions
"I practice this ritual out of affection for my father and my grandfather
this means simply keeping alive a very ancient and true tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages but is
From reading runes and tea leaves to examining the stars
people throughout history have been looking for signs that might tell them the future
searching for comfort in knowing which way to go
These various modes of divination have taken many different forms depending on the religious
many people turned to whatever vegetables were available at the time to predict the weather for the year ahead
this vegetable has historically been the common onion
a humble crop readily available to every farming family
Inside Urbania's 15th-Century Palazzo Ducale
which was commissioned by the Duke of Montefeltro
a library houses the duke's biography
The book describes his army winning a battle because he had consulted the onions and learned of the bad weather predicted
The practice has more commonly been used by farmers
passed down through generations of those dependent on agriculture
It was essential knowledge – when to plough the earth
Failing to consult the onions could mean the difference between feeding your family or not
it was a thing people believed in and many did it," Forlini recalled
instead there were people who cultivated this tradition and the farmers turned to these trusted people..
who was a farmer that continued this tradition
even later when it had fallen into disuse."
Urbania resident Anna Damiani remembers a time before smartphones and scientific weather predictions
we didn't have weather forecasts like there are today
for us it meant it would rain for the next 40 days
but we still continued to believe in it even if sometimes it was also wrong."
Italy's few remaining onion oracles tend to be scattered in the country's central and northern regions
Their predictions are published in local newspapers including a regional edition of the newspaper Il Resto del Carlino
as well as on a regional TV news programme
the typical refrain being: "The onions have spoken for another year." The continued annual broadcast of the results helps keep the tradition alive
the onion weather predictions (il barometro delle cipolle) remain a part of the local lexicon
'The onions have predicted rain!' or 'The onions have predicted such and such'," said Damiani
the accuracy of the predictions isn't what's important; what matters is that it continues
"We all know that it is not a scientific method
there are meteorologists and satellites and everything that today's modern world gives us
It is only a tradition… just a way to keep yourself a little anchored to the past in an emotional way."
Elisa Luzi is an anthropologist at the University of Tübingen in Germany but hails from a town close to Urbania
and she has been known locally as "the onion girl" ever since writing her bachelor's thesis at the University of Bologna on the topic of the Urbania onions in 2007
as well as local farmers who relied on the predictions
The day that the journal would print the predictions
we'd have to buy the paper and read what happened
He was still attached to this kind of old tradition – following the Moon to know when you have to work the field
Chop a medium onion into quarters and place 12 of the largest pieces on a wooden chopping board in two parallel rows
non-iodised salt on each slice and leave the board on a windowsill facing east with the window open
bring your board inside and analyse your onions straight away
The top of each slice represents the first 10 days of each month
the middle the second 10 days and the bottom the third portion
Undissolved salt means dry and sunny; melted salt means rain
possibly snow for a winter month; slices hardened with salt crystals mean frost and/or snow; bubbles mean humidity
The timing of the ritual is rooted in Catholicism
which is intrinsically tied to Italian culture
"Traditionally in the Catholic Church
the day of [January] 25th is the day of the Conversion of St Paul
you do it [the ritual] the night before because
it's the night before that's important," Luzi said
Paul received clear signs to become a Christian
This same night was chosen as the best time to read the onions as it was believed to hold some kind of magic
"They thought 'he was given signs so he'll give signs to me'," said Luzi
While the tradition has Catholicism in its DNA
the Catholic church does not officially support the practice
"They do not condone this kind of stuff
Onion-reading may no longer serve as practical a role as it once did
but Urbania's residents are still keen to preserve it
"It's kind of a point of pride… [it's] part of what we are
a little piece of our identity that we bring from the past
you need to remember that you're a part of history
When Forlini is finished with her readings
she types them up and sends them to the media for publication
the onions predicted a long and cold winter; a spring that starts and finishes with rain
interrupted by a mild and beautiful May in between; a sweltering summer; a mild early autumn that lasts until the end of October; and an earlier-than-usual start to a cold winter
"I certainly don't throw them away!" she said
I'll make onion soup for the evening."

TPG Real Estate Partners (TREP) and Urbania have formed a joint venture to acquire the three assets and operate them under the BCOME brand
One asset in Pamplona opened in September and the other two

Urbania develops real estate in Spain, Portugal and Brazil. TREP is already active in Germany’s student-housing market through its Campus Living platform
said: “We have been studying the student-housing market in continental Europe for many years
and we are pleased to partner with Urbania to build an institutional portfolio of scale that provides students across Spain with affordable
“Despite the growing number of domestic and international students
Spain remains one of the most undersupplied European markets in terms of purpose-built student accommodation.”
said: “We are delighted to be partnering with TREP in a joint mission to raise the quality of purpose-built student accommodation assets across the Iberia market

In-depth analysis and commentary on today's biggest news stories as only the BBC can deliver
BBC "Newshour" covers everything from the growth of democracy to the threat of terrorism with a fresh
Many LGBT-owned businesses are lobbying the city to do more to ensure that companies from their community have equal access hundreds of millions of dollars in city contracts
CEO of ChatterBlast marketing located in Philadelphia's Gayborhood
who leads the Center City digital marketing firm ChatterBlast
understands why Philadelphia has long devoted a share of public contracts to companies owned by minorities: It helps close the opportunity gap for groups that haven’t historically had a fair shot at city work
said it is about time the city make room in that category for businesses operated by lesbian
“We don’t expect this to be a system that is requiring X-amount of dollars to be spent with the LGBT community,” Urbania said
“We just really want to be next to the other minority and business services — those owned by women
African-Americans and the disabled,” he said
“We want to be in that same class and category.”
A growing number of LGBT-owned businesses in Philadelphia are lobbying the city to do more to ensure that companies from their community have equal access to some of the hundreds of millions of dollars in city contracts awarded every year for everything from general construction to technology services
to be given an edge in the bidding process
Philadelphia officials say they are still studying the issue
contracts have gone to those who have the most access to the people who make the decisions,” said Philly-based Jonathan Lovitz
senior vice president of the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce
“And all we’re trying to do is make sure those great LGBT enterprises in Philadelphia have a seat at the table to say
in light of some Trump administration proposals that throw LGBT protections into peril
going the opposite way on the local level carries heightened urgency
According to the Department of Commerce, about 30 percent of the $991 million in contracts the city awarded in 2016 went to businesses owned by minorities
City officials hope the percentage will reach 35 percent or higher in coming years
but advocates of expanding the set-aside category to include LGBT enterprises said they are hearing concerns that such a move would take business away from the rest of the group
“I’ve heard that sentiment expressed by both members of the African-American business community and from members of city government,” said Marc Coleman
who is black and gay and the president of the Tactile Group
He said when minority business owners are given city work
“Other diverse communities may think that this is going to take something away from the pie
but LGBT business owners are twice to three times more likely to utilize other minorities in their subcontracting,” he said
Leaders at a half-dozen companies that were awarded city contracts last year as part of the city’s diverse supplier program did not return requests for comment about whether adding LGBT companies to the group would create fears of less work to go around
who runs the Mayor’s Office of LGBT Affairs
said she has not heard this worry from any businesses owned by the groups now in the diverse category
She said the city is committed to growing opportunities for the gay and lesbian business community
although formally expanding the city’s diverse business category would require launching a study to demonstrate that LGBT companies are being left out
In fact, city law stipulates that a “disparity study” be completed before a new class is added to the diversity category
“If you can’t prove that there’s a disadvantage
then it wouldn’t make sense to provide extra benefits,” Hikes said
who heads the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce
having to commission a study to illustrate that there is LGBT discrimination is preposterous
“The sheer need of talking about a need for a disparity study shows there’s disparity,” Nelson said
Several business owners interviewed said being open about their sexual orientation has resulted in unambiguous bias
“People found out that I had a husband and decided not to work with us,” said Coleman of the Tactile Group
“There are actual real stigmas and barriers.”
is that forcing businesses to self-identify as disadvantaged “further stigmatizes them.”
“We’re trying to get the city to move away from this old-school model,” he said
simplifying the process of how companies bid on public projects and giving contractors incentives to hire more LGBT subcontractors
Wolf has not added LGBT-owned businesses to the state’s diverse supplier category – that requires a two-year study
Backers of more LGBT access to city work say if Philadelphia officials just mirror the preliminary actions of Wolf
that would be a victory — at least for now
Hikes agreed with advocates that it’s inexcusable that the city does not track the number of LGBT businesses in Philadelphia
And even if adding LGBT businesses among the ranks of other diverse groups favored for city work may be a far-off prospect
figuring out a way to assess the community’s economic impact is a shorter-term goal
in terms of the city checking off boxes and giving me a list of what the LGBT business are in the city
We know that’s not the case,” Hikes said
“We need to know who these businesses are,” she said
“What kind of business are they bringing into the city
The National LGBT Chamber of Commerce has certified 50 businesses in Philadelphia as LGBT business enterprises or as being at least 51 percent owned by an LGBT person
said if LGBT companies believe a core part of their character is invisible in a business proposal
some could feel muzzled and walk away from opportunities
“Nobody leaves their identity at home,” Nelson said
“And if you ask someone else to leave their particular identity at home
“A lot of times that keeps people from even wanting to trying to compete.”

A standardized radiology reporting system that automatically refers patients with suspicious lung nodules to a multidisciplinary care team improved the odds that a patient would be diagnosed with lung cancer at an early stage
a new study by Kaiser Permanente researchers shows
“It’s hard to get a call from a doctor who is telling you that something was found on your scan
It’s of immediate value to patients for us to be able to explain that we have experts who are looking at the scan and that we have a plan for them
The observational study, published in November in the journal Chest
included 99,148 KPNC patients age 18 and over who had a chest computed tomography (CT) scan between January 2015 and July 2017
40% of the patients were tagged under the new system
Patients whose scans were reviewed with the new reporting system had a 24% greater odds of an early-stage lung cancer diagnosis than patients whose scans were read before the new system was implemented
It is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S
is modeled after a similar approach used for reporting results from screening mammography
standardized reporting for chest CT scans is harder to implement because of the wider potential range of findings
“Cancer care is very complicated and involves many protocols and workflows,” said study co-author Lisa Herrinton, PhD
a senior research scientist and epidemiologist at the Division of Research
“There are lots of pieces that have to be moved around and making changes can be very complex
We were happy to see that the new system led to greater diagnoses of early stage lung cancer.”
Under the new system, radiologists classify pulmonary findings into one of 8 categories; category 5 is used to report findings suspicious for lung cancer. Then, a process developed by study co-author Ashish Patel, MD
a thoracic surgeon at The Permanente Medical Group
automates referral of patients with a category 5 result to a daily triage physician
typically a pulmonologist or thoracic surgeon
Complicated cases are discussed at weekly multidisciplinary conferences
The team takes over the patient’s care or makes recommendations to the patient’s primary care physician
The new system builds on previous work at Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center to standardize tagging of CT reports by pulmonary findings
The study did not find that the new system reduced the time from diagnosis to surgery
“Once you streamline one part of the system
you need to look at other parts of the system downstream,” said Urbania
Future studies will look at whether the new system improves lung cancer survival rates
The researchers’ expectation is that it will
“It’s reasonable to assume that if more people are diagnosed earlier
more people will survive longer,” Urbania said
The project is supported by The Permanente Medical Group Delivery Science and Applied Research (DARE) Initiative
Coauthors include Jennifer Dusendang, MPH, Stacey Alexeeff, PhD, and Douglas A. Corley, MD, PhD, MPH

We are just starting to see some of the best business opportunities for social
and that’s disrupting the traditional marketing approach
Social was never designed to be a silver bullet
but it is now part of the communications mix and can’t be ignored
What is happening is that social is becoming more integrated and people are learning that it is really more of a manifestation of your company brand
REITs that own malls or shopping centers are definitely starting to look at the customer experience and are finding new ways to integrate social media
experiential marketing and creative campaigns into the mix
buying patterns continue to move online and the only way to gain more customers is to meet them where the physical and digital experiences intersect
entertainment and the ability to share all that with their world
The best way to attract consumers to brick-and-mortar locations is through incredible moments that they can share on their social accounts
I always view social as having the potential for a large variety of objectives
but you can only use it successfully for a few of these goals at a time
Some organizations are using social for community outreach
philanthropic efforts and customer service
growth and attention for the things you are already doing as a company
Social can be aimed at employee retention or recruitment
A content marketing plan and a strong Facebook strategy can be a great place to showcase your talent and reveal your company culture for the next generation of team members
Our interns often remind us that they do in fact judge a company by their social media and by how well a company’s website shows up on their phone
leasing and all other integrated marketing efforts to drive business growth
If large regulated financial institutions and CEOs of health care organizations like Aetna can be on social media
REITs need to decide if they want to use social as a disclosure mechanism to their investors
there is a simple set of procedures to ensure that social is used correctly and the wrong information is not released (SEC Regulation FD)
The choice should be based on the investor relations process and internal resources of the REIT
we are not seeing a ton of value to using social for investor communications in this sector
whether using social for investor relations or not
the same rules of clear communication and common sense should apply
If you wouldn't say it to a room full of your clients
are companies that own or finance income-producing real estate across a range of property sectors
These real estate companies have to meet a number of requirements to qualify as REITs
and they offer a number of benefits to investors
REITs historically have delivered competitive total returns
steady dividend income and long-term capital appreciation
Their comparatively low correlation with other assets also makes them an excellent portfolio diversifier that can help reduce overall portfolio risk and increase returns

Harlem-born Kimberly Becoat is a Brooklyn resident and mixed media artist whose work explores issues of societal constructs and malaises with an unsparing
she makes us aware of what’s happening within our communities and the forces at work to deny us agency
currently on view at The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts in Brooklyn
Becoat draws on her own experiences and brings viewers into some of the social aspects of dwelling in public housing projects
colors and ways residents choose to interact
highlighting the frequently forgotten aspects of Black lives in New York City
in the 16 original pieces of her new body of work.
Here we speak with Becoat about her latest project and all-seeing eye
Aside from the gorgeous visual pleasure of looking at Urbania
political implications at play that you can share with us?
KIMBERLY BECOAT: What’s happening in Urbania land is a conversation about urban landscapes how they’re developed
what they were designed to do (or separate a people from doing) for the people that inhabit them and more importantly
how the people within them chose to cultivate their own narrative
It’s also a resurrection of information that is lost to many who are not natives to New York City and never pay attention to these areas – and last
a resurrection and revitalization on the beauty of the projects in other states
BECOAT: Working in mixed mediums allows me to move through the narrative or overall concept behind a body [or series] of work more fluidly than attempting to express it with just painting or collaging or whatever
It’s me making an active choice to go where the work wants to go and then marry it with my signature touches
what is the range of your canvases?
BECOAT: My work can go from 10 feet or more to as small as 5 inches
These newer works in the Urbania series fall somewhere in the middle area – around 5 feet to smaller works 24 inches
BECOAT: All the works in the Urbania series are on paper
I know it looks like canvas that I am constructing on but is indeed a conscious choice to craft this particular series on paper
It gives the work a tapestry vibe that I’ve fallen in love with
I work more on paper than canvas these days
Describe for us your artistic developments over the last decade or more.
BECOAT: I’ve been refining a lot of techniques into little systems that allow me to move the ideas more fluidly
I use sand mixed with acrylic in a lot of my work and fabrics with multiple dyes in others – and I’ve developed lovely ways to keep those mixes together on a piece to last as well as get look I want
even your low moments during these artistic developments
Low lights are always more important when developing in a new material and turning it into beautiful highlights – so I would say artistically just paying deeper attention to the mistakes – for example when the paper rips on an overlay of multiple materials I’ve mixed together on the work
My thoughts do not immediately run to destroying the entire work
I’m more apt to leave it and come back to it and figure out what these materials are asking me to see in order to put them together cohesively to tell the story I want in the work
I have to say after looking at a lot of work from this series I’ve done a damn good job making those adjustments into a lovely highlight reel of works
Do you think that you’ve by now reached mastery of your practice or is it an ever-ongoing process?
” You know what you know – you know what you don’t know – But you don’t know what you don’t know” (laughing)
I know that I’ve mastered a great deal
I know what I’ve yet to master (but I’m getting there) – but there’s an outlier of information in an art practice of mediums that I’ve seen
and I say “wow – I didn’t even know I didn’t know that or that was possible” – yes and no… always ongoing
Seriously- I know that’s a generic answer- but the truth of the matter is I could be watching a TV show or hear some tidbit of a conversation traveling and it will spark me down a rabbit hole
I love playing investigator – I love researching deeper after I learn/hear stuff
Intertwine it with my lifelong insistence to always speak from a Black American framework well there you go! There’s so much there to work from – because so much of the Black [and Brown] American experience – just in enjoy living separate from fighting and rallying for our rights has not been explored or told
What are your favorite art periods and why
– My favorites right now would be the Black Arts Movement of the 70s and the 80s early 90s – that was such a broad range of work from everyone on both coasts
You still had master Black artists working and producing and creating spaces to show
The Black women artists that came from those decades
Who are some of your favorite artists and why?
BECOAT: Howardena Pindell/Betye Saar/Mark Bradford/Jack Whitten on range of use materials alone the kings and queens of assemblage – I learn something new to try every time I look at their work
Stanley Whitley – as a painter for me – their mastery of color is chef’s kiss – I referred to them a lot doing my Urbania works creating my own color codes from hood/bodega store staples
And Alma Thomas – she was an art educator and artist – that is not easy to do because you pour so much into the youth to be able to do the work she created at a high level of production and aesthetic is incredible – as an artist that also teaches youth
for those not previously familiar with your work
is this a continuation or departure from your previous works.
BECOAT: I work on several bodies of work simultaneously- so when I was working or beginning the concept for Urbania way back 10 years ago with earlier pieces I was also working on pieces about the modern day hottentots and laying out the work for Seneca Village which actually was the catalyst (both series) for Urbania – a person might think I’ve departed from a particular style but no
mixing other materials are all in works whether I decide to make it abstract or gesture to a figure – in my head it’s all the a continuation
BECOAT: Urbania has several parts to it – this mid part that this solo exhibition speaks to is opening up a passageway into an area (or areas) of New York City where NYCHA housing is constructed and also more out of NYC- the areas in other states affectionately called the Projects
I’m speaking to those social dynamics/rituals and cultures of those that have grown up in those dwellings – as they have seemingly been abandoned either in a physical way or economics throughout the years
This mid part is lighter in tone and subject matter as I’m incorporating hood games like Skelly
double Dutch or hood colors I call them from candies we ate like Lemonheads
And then addressing areas where we were seemingly invited but felt restrictive in some ways to be there – so I touch upon reclaiming sanctuary and making peace with those spaces outside the hood – like Central Park where the pool resided
This portion and Blackness or Brown skin thriving a placing is center stage in that joy
What are the major takeaways that you hope that viewers would get from this new body of work?
BECOAT: Overall be active in knowing the people where you reside – one of the biggest resentments against expats in any environment is this unnatural desire to “takeover.” There’s freedom in community – in understanding what was there before you and with you – be a part of the experience not segregated from it
That there’s sanctuary in having a place that even in your mind you can call back to and move forward in no matter you are – never forget your cultural codes – bask in the colors as those are everyday aesthetics that keep you grounded even outside the hood – we are always asked to put them aside – but don’t
swim and roller-skate – and that’s all a revolutionary act too
So make sure one does them as often as possible
And that the work invigorates and opens up dialog about all these things for you

(WZTV) — The nationwide strike involving nearly 50,000 General Motors workers reaches new heights in Spring Hill
Several United Auto Workers members got arrested outside the plant
after it was announced GM cut off their health benefits
This move by General Motors is truly unprecedented
In 50 years worth of negotiations with UAW
GM has never shut off employees health insurance
That’s what really fired up these striking workers
As many as nine General Motors workers were taken away in handcuffs after blocking trucks from getting in
“Our workers are very passionate about making sure that cars don’t get built during this time frame,” explains UAW Local 1583 Chair Mike Herron
The arrests came after finding out the company was cutting off health insurance to strikers amid intense contract negotiations
now that lifesaving procedure is in jeopardy
I need catastrophic insurance,” says Urbania
Urbania is one of 3,500 Spring Hill employees on strike
but there’s a lot more stories out there than just mine,” Urbania said
Maury County Mayor Andy Ogles heard Urbanias’ story and is now stepping in
“That was a low blow and entirely unnecessary,” says Ogles
Striking workers can sign up for coverage through UAW but it takes time to process

QUE.—Builder Sebastien Lessard has no delusions of grandeur with his Urbania 2 housing project currently underway near Le Corbusier Boulevard in Laval
later a university economics grad who worked his way to the top of a small family construction business
understands the demographics of his potential customer base
He says he will not add to their costs by seeking unnecessary LEED certification or otherwise taking steps that might raise prices of the condos he is trying to sell to them
The first homes in Urbania 2 are expected to be ready for occupancy by next December
The $270-million project will eventually include a total of 1,150 condominiums in six buildings maxing out at 32 storeys
a similar medium- to high-density project that recently wrapped with 750 units
"Urbania 2 is a price-point project," said Lessard
"We know that people who use the subway station are people with limited incomes
so we can’t go with only high-end units," he said
"It is not a service to the community to propose that kind of product."
Urbania is marketing to young urban professionals who cannot afford the prices of downtown Montreal
"Two-hundred-thousand dollars will get you a one-bedroom with an interior parking garage," he said
"If you compare costs with the downtown core
you will spend $450 to $550 per square foot there; here in Laval
it’s $150 cheaper per square foot."
Being shrewd about costs starts with the architect
He used Montreal’s Giasson Farragut for Urbania 1 and will continue the collaboration with phase 2
"Giasson Farragut has been involved since the beginning
They are very sensitive to bringing architecture to market
It means that design must be done according to budget
When we establish a price point we have to design a building so the market can absorb it
I have seen projects where it is a monument to the architect."
Lessard said Urbania follows the principles of the LEED program but does not necessarily seek LEED certification
