the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche in Urbino will pay tribute to Simone Cantarini (Pesaro
known as “il Pesarese,” with a major monographic exhibition dedicated to his artistic production
organized in collaboration with the Barberini Corsini National Galleries in Rome
represents an important opportunity to rediscover the talent of a painter who knew how to move between classicism and baroque with extraordinary originality.Curated by the Director of the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche
together with Anna Maria Ambrosini Massari
an official art historian at the Ministry of Culture
titled Simone Cantarini (1612 - 1648) known as the Pesarese
brings together 54 works selected to narrate Cantarini’s artistic and intellectual journey
It is an exhibition that testifies to the constant collaboration between Italian museum institutions to enhance the national heritage
Simone Cantarini was born in Pesaro in 1612 and from a young age showed an early talent for drawing and painting
where he had the opportunity to study closely the works of great masters of the 16th century
but especially those of the Bolognese painters of his time
The turning point in his career was his entry into the workshop of Guido Reni in Bologna
one of the most influential artists of the Italian seventeenth century
His apprenticeship with Reni was crucial in refining his technique and developing a pictorial language of great elegance
but the relationship between the two soon proved difficult
with a proud temperament and little inclined to submission
soon manifested a desire to emancipate himself from his master’s influence
openly criticizing his master’s work and giving birth to a more personal and dynamic pictorial language
Cantarini embarked on an independent career
consolidating his own style and attracting the attention of important patrons
Bolognese biographer Carlo Cesare Malvasia described him thus
“He was Cantarini of ordinary stature
A portrait well suited to a painter of independent character and precocious talent
capable of creating works in which grace is combined with a unique dramatic intensity
His painting is distinguished by an extraordinary finesse of execution and a luministic sensibility that brings him close to the great masters of the seventeenth century
Although he remains attached to an idea of classical beauty
there is a more vibrant expressive tension in his works than the idealized composure of Guido Reni
and the fluidity of his strokes made him a highly regarded artist among his contemporaries
One of the most significant works on view in the exhibition is the monumental altarpiece from the church of San Cassiano in Pesaro
a place of worship particularly linked to the artist’s life
the Madonna and Child with Saints Barbara and Terentius
Cantarini self-portrays the figure of Saint Terentius
inserting himself within the sacred narrative with intense emotional participation
which can be admired in the first room of the Rovereschi Apartments on the second floor of the Ducal Palace
returned to the museum in 2021 thanks to the Ministry of Culture’s “100 Works Return Home” project
The ministerial initiative made it possible to unearth works kept in storage
returning them to the areas for which they were intended
This project had the merit of returning visibility to some works that
The exhibition on Cantarini fits into this perspective of rediscovery and valorization
offering the opportunity to delve into the figure of an artist who is often little known
but of fundamental importance in the pictorial panorama of the seventeenth century
Simone Cantarini’s career was marked by a premature end
under circumstances that are still unclear today
Cantarini had stormy relations with other artists
Other hypotheses speak of a poisoning by a rival
but the fact remains that his demise deprived the Italian art scene of one of the most original voices of the seventeenth century
Cantarini’s legacy is of extraordinary importance
producing a series of prints that were highly successful and contributed to the spread of his style far beyond the borders of Emilia and Marche
His ability to translate into images a refined balance between classical idealization and expressive naturalness makes him a unique artist whose rediscovery is now more necessary than ever
Solaris Urbino 12 Electric is a quite well-known model for those into the European bus market
Solaris is today the leading European player in the zero-emission bus sector
a highly successful model launched in 2016
have been available in a BEV version right from the start […]
have been available in a BEV version right from the start (while the previous-generation electric Urbino had already been presented in 2011)
allowing the dynamic Polish manufacturer to gain great experience in this type of alternative drive
And new features have been launched in early 2024
This article was previously published on the February 2024 issue of Sustainable Bus magazine
As an alternative to the ZF AxTrax e-powered axle
a central motor from Austria’s TSA (model TMF35-28-4) or ZF’s CeTrax Cx220 110B have been available for a few years now on the Solaris Urbino 12 Electric
so that supporters of one or the other solution can be satisfied
The increasingly strong collaboration with Impact Clean Power Technology has led to the development of new High Energy 100 batteries
with NMC chemistry and a capacity of 102.9 kWh per module
This modules have the same size of the previously fitted range
The weight is also similar (just about ten kilos more)
for a 14 percent benefit in terms of energy capacity
The new batteries also make it possible to upgrade vehicles born with the 88 kWh Impact modules or even the first-generation 40 kWh modules
The performance of the three variants ranges from 160 kW of power for the TSA
to 220 of the CeTrax and up to 2×125 kW of the ZF’s “motor wheels” (with as much as 22,000 Nm of total maximum torque downstream of the integrated hub reduction)
one can logically intervene on the transmission ratio
opting for a greater or lesser reduction depending on the mission profile required
on the left-hand side; a solution that requires a forward extension of the base close to the wheels and the positioning of a rearward-facing two-seater behind the disabled seat
Among the advantages of the motorised axle is certainly the smaller internal size
there is quieter operation and decidedly easier maintenance
as well as (it seems) greater efficiency in energy recovery during braking
letting the customer choose the preferred driveline already puts Solaris in an advantageous position compared to competitors who go their own way
sometimes without being sure of which solution is actually the best
Let’s talk about the updates introduced to the Solaris Urbino 12 Electric at VDV-backed Mobility Move exhibition, held in Berlin at the beginning of March
The increasingly strong collaboration with Impact Clean Power Technology, a Warsaw-based company specialising in batteries and charging systems (with plans to establish a gigafactory)
has led to the development of new High Energy 100 batteries
the Berlin fair was also an opportunity to make official the new arrangement of the drive components
as already anticipated at Busworld in Brussels on the 18-metre
the rear structure of the vehicle changes completely
The engine tower inherited from thermal vehicles
the inverter and the cooling units are gone
The batteries are therefore all transferred to the roof
They are distributed between the front and rear areas
similarly to what other manufacturers have already done
allows up to six 100 kWh modules to be accommodated on the 12-metre and up to eight on the 18-metre
This enables the Urbino to achieve respectable capacities (and therefore range)
even taking into account a DoD (= depth of discharge
the energy that can actually be used) of 80 percent
The greatest benefits of the new layout can be seen inside
where four to seven more passenger seats can be found in the area previously occupied by part of the batteries
The entire passenger compartment is also surrounded by windows
all other types of batteries remain on the list: 140 kWh LFP batteries (the cheapest) for plug-in recharging
and 30 kWh LTO batteries for flash and opportunity recharging by direct or reverse pantograph
The standard position of the CCS2 socket is near the right front wheel
to which a second specular recharging point can be coupled to the left
With the exception of a few minor optimisations on components and production costs
the Urbino otherwise retains all the characteristics that have taken it to the third place of the European market for city buses
The self-supporting reticular structure is still made of stainless steel profiles and tubulars welded together
onto which the reinforced fibreglass headers
all fitted with specific hinges that allow almost total rotation
contain the overall size in the open position
The driver’s seat is of a fairly traditional design
with an adjustable dashboard integral with the steering wheel and compliant with VDV standards
It is supplemented by a practical dashboard to the left of the driver and room for additional controls and control units above the driver’s head
The ISRI or Grammer brand seat is pneumatic with lumbar adjustment
which can be combined with cushion heating and backrest ventilation functions
The passenger compartment is very spacious
also thanks to the new battery arrangement
and only partially affected by the presence of the motor
The windows can all be fitted with a vasistas or sliding opening
with a choice of two levels of transparency
Evening lighting is provided by two rows of LED lamps arranged longitudinally and pointing downwards at approximately 45 degrees
with transparent plastic covers featuring a rather classic appearance
Handrails are in painted steel or stainless steel
with an intelligent modular assembly system
The basic seats are the Kiel Ideo or Ster 8MU
made of plastic with or without velour covers; alternatively
Yet another example of Solaris flexibility

The international Bus of the Year jury has awarded the title of Bus of the Year 2025 to the Solaris Urbino 18 hydrogen
This marks the second title for a Solaris vehicle and the first time in the competition’s history
that a zero-emission hydrogen-powered vehicle has won
The international Bus of the Year jury has awarded the title of Bus of the Year 2025 to the Solaris Urbino 18 hydrogen
This marks the second title for a Solaris vehicle and the first time in the competition’s history
that a zero-emission hydrogen-powered vehicle has won
The statuette was awarded on 16 September during a gala at the opening of the IAA Transportation in Hanover
It’s worth noticing that almost half (44.5%) of all hydrogen buses registered in mainland Europe in 2023 were Solaris vehicles
This title acknowledges both the excellence of our product and our strong market position throughout Europe
We are greatly honored to be a leader in zero-emission solutions
supplying our customers with battery and hydrogen buses
This is the second time that a Solaris vehicle has won the Bus of the Year title after the Urbino 12 electric model awarded in 2017
This time, industry experts appreciated the advantages of hydrogen technology and awarded the articulated version of the Solaris Urbino 18 hydrogen (that was launched in September 2022)
which is powered by electricity generated in a hydrogen fuel cell
Solaris is therefore the first company in the history of the competition to win the title for both battery-powered bus and now a hydrogen-powered bus
The main energy source in the new Urbino 18 hydrogen is hydrogen
The heart of the bus is a cutting-edge fuel cell that acts as a miniature hydrogen power plant
Hydrogen is transformed by the fuel cell into electricity
which is then transferred to the driveline
the bus can carry up to 140 passengers.
Solaris batteries (based on LTO formula) with a capacity of around 60 kWh serve as an auxiliary power source, used, for example, during acceleration of the Solaris Urbino 18 hydrogen as well as for energy storage. Complete technical sheets can be found HERE
Thanks to the hydrogen technology applied and an increased number of new
light hydrogen tanks with a total capacity of 51.2 kg
the brand-new bus performs excellently on longer routes
Solaris stresses that the bus can cover 600 km on a single refill
while maintaining all the qualities of an electric drive (based on energy consumption in e-SORT 2 tests)
Full refueling of the vehicle takes around 20 minutes.
The newly-awarded Bus of the Year 2025 has been equipped with a modular drive system with components placed on the roof and in the rear of the vehicle
aiming to maximizing passenger capacity, facilitating servicing and providing more flexibility in terms of roof arrangement options.
“The small number of batteries and the increased power of the fuel cell in the Urbino 18 hydrogen allow this bus to operate efficiently
An additional advantage of the fuel cell is that the vehicle is quickly ready for its next journey. Almost all the energy is stored in the hydrogen
All that is needed to continue driving is to refuel the hydrogen
the bus can travel up to 600 kilometers
There is no need for any additional infrastructure”
CTO Solaris Bus & Coach.
The Solaris Urbino 18 hydrogen competed for the title of the best bus of the year in May this year as part of the Bus Euro Test
This year’s edition of the event was held in Kladno
where vehicles from five manufacturers underwent a series of comparative tests over several days: Daimler
is a prestigious industry competition organized since 1989 by the Association of Commercial Vehicle Editors (ACE)
The competition is held every two years and each time the event’ host is a jury member from a different European country
The winning vehicle receives the title of the best bus for the next year
so in this year’s edition the title is “Bus of the Year 2025”
The jury evaluated such factors as acceleration
as well as the subjective feelings of the jury
who tested the bus as both drivers and passengers
“Hydrogen is probably one of the most sustainable fuels
and its usage and share in energy mix will grow fastest in public transport in the coming years
The fact that Solaris has chosen to invest so heavily in this technology deserves great respect
Solaris has also managed to construct a bus that meets future requirements in terms of passenger comfort and capacity
as well as a sustainable and environmentally friendly powertrain”

Duke Francesco Maria II Della Rovere (Florence
Here the masterpieces of Baroque portraiture will be presented along with the Madonna of the Cat (Florence
The second room will deal with the theme of large altarpieces made with innovative nocturnal effects that revolutionized the 16th-century tradition with the unprecedented chromatic flashes accompanying some masterpieces
such as the Deposition executed for the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Perugia
the Madonna of San Simone in the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche or the Visitation at the Chiesa Nuova and theInstitution of the Eucharist at the Minerva
The third room will be devoted to the theme of affections
nature and emotions with small paintings intended for private devotion

The small Italian hill town of Urbino became
for a short time during the Renaissance era
one of the major cultural centres of Europe
the historic centre is defined by its Renaissance walls that survive virtually intact
several buildings of extraordinary quality have been retained such as the Ducal Palace
the Monastery of Santa Chiara and a complex system of oratories
The initial nucleus of the city evolved from a fortified Roman settlement dating from the 3rd and 2nd centuries BCE
The Romans built on the top of the hill where the Ducal Palace now stands and until the 11th century
its urban expansion required the construction of a new system of defensive walls
Federico da Montefeltro undertook a radical rebuilding campaign within these original walls without disturbing the overall urban structure
The city was later further expanded to a second hill lying to the north
now enclosed by the Renaissance walls an elongated outline
Urbino is a small city in the hills that experienced an astonishing cultural flowering in the 15th century
it attracted artists and scholars from all over Italy and beyond which
influenced cultural developments elsewhere in Europe
Federico da Montefeltro ruled in Urbino and his court brought together some of the era’s leaders: foremost humanists of the time such as Leone Battista Alberti
and Giovanni Bessarione; mathematicians like Paul van Middelburg; and artists such as Luciano Laurana
Piero della Francesca and Ambrogio Barocci
These men created and implemented outstanding cultural and urban projects
This cultural climate made it possible for Raffaello
Donato Bramante and the mathematician Luca Pacioli to flourish in their own art and science
Criterion (ii): During its short cultural pre-eminence
Urbino attracted some of the most outstanding humanist scholars and artists of the Renaissance
who created there an exceptional urban complex of remarkable homogeneity
the influence of which was carried far into the rest of Europe
Criterion (iv): Urbino represents a pinnacle of Renaissance art and architecture
harmoniously adapted to its physical site and to its medieval precursor in an exceptional manner
Urbino appears as a continuous and unified space defined today
a significant number of buildings from that era survive
Some demolitions occurred in the early 19th century
No major threats to the historic centre have been identified
The authenticity of the Historic Centre of Urbino is high as it has retained much of its urban form in terms of street layout within the Renaissance walls
it has preserved its spatial characteristics and volumes
as well as to the subsequent Renaissance additions
Even the interventions from the 18th and 19th centuries left the Renaissance layout almost completely untouched
designed by Vincenzo Ghinelli situated beside Francesco di Giorgio’s tower
was compatible in style and proportions with its neighbours
it has preserved its authenticity through the use of traditional and historical techniques and building materials in the maintenance and restoration work on buildings and in the public areas of the historic centre
types and dimensions of existing architecture
The interventions in the town planning have never transformed the older constructions
perfectly complying with the urban landscape and the morphological conformation of the site
The historic centre is regulated by national laws and by town planning and local building regulations
National laws directly safeguard many individual monumental buildings in the historic centre as well as in the surrounding fortifications
The centre is also protected as a conservation area with a specific landscape protection planning control as well as an archaeology protection control
Local town planning and building laws define the criteria and methods used for preserving the historic heritage
These standards and regulations guarantee the protection of the urban layout
and finishing techniques for building fronts
the Municipality has undertaken a planimetric survey of all buildings in the historic centre
which made it possible to classify them according to type
degree of integrity and definition of permitted intervention limits
detailed surveys of building façades along the main thoroughfares
together with painstaking archival research has provided documentary and methodological support for the planning of maintenance and restoration interventions to those façades
The safeguarding of the landscape in support of the image of the historic centre is implemented through regulations for integral protection as laid down in the General Zoning Plan applied to the whole area of hills that can be seen from the circuit of the city walls
Within this zone it is only possible to carry out requalification interventions to the plant and tree resources and to cultural and historic heritage
together with limited and properly calibrated interventions for the provision of underground parking to improve access to the historic area and to implement a definitive area for pedestrians only
all conversion works in the World Heritage property are subject to council planning permission
and to the specific opinion of the competent territorial office of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities
These procedures are in place to prevent any harm to the integrity of cultural heritage as well as any damage to the perspective
or light or any alteration to environmental conditions or decorative features
Czech transport company Martin Uher Bus has ordered ten Urbino 12 hydrogen buses from Polish manufacturer Solaris
All buses should be delivered towards the end of next year
They will be the first hydrogen buses to hit the road in the Central Bohemian region around Prague
they will operate in “the hilly areas around Mníšek pod Brdy” outside of the Czech capital
Solaris emphasises that “the buses will be refuelled with hydrogen produced from 100% green electricity.” It will be supplied by Vrané nad Vltavou hydroelectric power plant
Solaris presented the current generation of its twelve-metre solo bus with fuel cell, the Urbino 12 hydrogen, in 2019
The FCEV is fitted with 70 kW fuel cell and has a stated range of up to 350 kilometres
The vehicle also has several batteries with a total capacity of 60 kWh mounted on top
They also store energy recuperated during braking
“We are the most populated region in the Czech Republic and are we closely monitor innovations in transport and other sectors
We are the first region in the country to launch a major hydrogen project in transport,” said Petra Pecková
Governor of the Central Bohemian region
“At some point in the future
all transport is to be emission-free
and we need to test the latest technologies in practice
We already have electric buses on lines in Kutná Hora
Now we will also try out the other promising fuel – hydrogen.”
“I am extremely proud that Martin Uher Bus has chosen our company as a partner in the transition to zero-emission transport using ten modern Solaris Urbino hydrogen buses,” said Roman Zdráhal
“We are honoured to be part of this significant hydrogen project in the Czech Republic
We will bring our experience and extensive knowledge to this initiative – our company has already delivered more than 220 hydrogen fuel cell buses to customers from 10 European countries.”
solarisbus.com
one of Sweden's largest transport operators
has ordered 46 electric buses from manufacturer Solaris
The first buses will be delivered next year and go into service in the Dalarna region
The order is for 19 Solaris Urbino 12 electric models and 27 Solaris Urbino 15 LE electric vehicles
The latter are scheduled for delivery in 2025
while the 12-metre models will follow in 2026
The 15-metre electric buses were first introduced in early 2020 and are designed especially for Scandinavian countries
as the demand there is high for that size vehicle
the Urbino 15 LE electric ordered by Keolis “will be powered by High Energy batteries with a total capacity of 700 kWh
providing an extended operational range.” It has room for up to 72 passengers
and as it is designed for both urban and intercity transport
all seats are equipped with three-point seatbelts
The smaller Urbina has space for up to 61 passengers and is equipped with a 600-kWh battery
“The drive will feature a 240 kW traction motor and a modular drive
with components located on the roof and at the rear of the bus
maximizing passenger space,” Solaris points out
“Keolis’ order of 46 electric buses is a significant step in sustainable mobility solutions in Sweden
We are pleased to implement zero-emission solutions in both city centres and suburban transportation
as we believe this is essential for the global transformation of transport,” said Sverre Skaar

Solaris has delivered the first of 50 newly ordered electric articulated buses to Berlin's public transport operator
The unique feature is that the electrically powered vehicle has a battery passport - a good two years before it becomes mandatory in the European Union
The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) submitted the order for the 50 units at the end of 2023
and the first Urbino 18 electric was handed over precisely one year later
The model has a battery capacity of around 700 kWh and offers 41 seats
It is charged overnight at the depot or using a pantograph at the final stops
the entire order should be completed in 2025
the Polish manufacturer states that the articulated electric bus now delivered has a battery passport
a digital document containing detailed information about the origin and composition of the battery
All 49 other buses for BVG will also have such a passport
It can be accessed by scanning the QR code on the batteries
Solaris is early with this feature, as a functioning digital battery passport will not become mandatory in the EU until February 2027. The background to this is that the European Union adopted a new regulation on battery market regulation in August 2023
Key points of the document are a mandatory declaration and labelling – including with regard to battery components and the proportion of recycled material – as well as the aforementioned electronic battery passport and a QR code
To give member states and economic operators in the market sufficient time to prepare
the labelling requirements will apply from 2026 and the passport and QR code from 2027
Solaris justifies the early adoption of this regulation with its leading role in Europe: “To date
Solaris has delivered over 5,000 zero-emission vehicles
making responsible management of this strategic zero-emission transport component essential.”

The Urbino 18 hydrogen will be delivered in the second half of 2025
which stands for ‘Le Syndicat Mixte des Transports en Commun du Territoire de Belfort’ and brings together regional transport operators
The Régie des Transports du Territoire de Belfort (RTTB) will then operate the fuel cell buses
The Urbino 18 hydrogen is an 18-metre articulated bus with a 100 kW hydrogen fuel cell, which Solaris buys from Ballard
and composite tanks that can store more than 50 kg of hydrogen at a pressure of 350 bar
They are used as an auxiliary power source
the larger Solaris hydrogen bus can seat a maximum of 52 passengers
Solaris says this is already its third order for hydrogen-powered buses in France. In March, it announced an order for 22 Urbino 12 Hydrogen from Paris
“We are extremely proud to collaborate with SMTC in Belfort and to supply the city with the high-tech
The Urbino 18 hydrogen are not only an innovative means of transport but also a step towards a sustainable future

Eighmy signed a renewal collaboration agreement with the university
Though the program began with architecture students only
the College of Liberal and Fine Arts soon followed suit and began leading semester-long programs in Urbino in spring 2012
Groups of engineering and construction science and management students have also collaborated in Urbino in recent years
Currently there are discussions with the College of Education and Human Development and University College to offer additional programs at the ISCU
Participation levels continue to rise: an average of 65 UTSA students now study in Urbino each semester
and more than 850 UTSA students have studied in Urbino since 2010
Murphy initiated an international studio requirement for architecture and interior design students when he joined UTSA in 2009
which has become a signature experience for the College of Architecture
we felt strongly that having a multicultural and historically rich international experience was imperative to the growth and development of our students,” said Murphy
I believe all students can benefit from a culturally immersive experience such as what we have in Urbino
and I’m ready to work with all colleges at UTSA to continue and grow the opportunities for students
“A global view of any topic greatly increases the value of what is being learned. Students who study abroad are better prepared for employment that now occurs in every sector on a global scale.” In his new role in the Division of Global Initiatives under the leadership of Vice Provost Lisa Montoya
Murphy will support the growth of UTSA programs at the ISCU as well as UNIURB- aligned programs and provide necessary support for exemplary educational experiences for students and faculty in residence
He also will explore developing a “micro-campus” in Urbino to provide enhanced services to UTSA students and to offer coursework to non-UTSA students from other universities studying in Urbino
UTSA College of Engineering Dean JoAnn Browning also will serve as interim dean of the College of Architecture

Portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Urbino is both one of Piero della Francesca's greatest works and one of the most famous portraits from the Italian Renaissance
But it's not just impressive to look at—beneath its brushstrokes lie secrets and the tragedy of the Italian couple
The profile portraits, displayed today as a pair of paintings, are tempera works painted on wooden panels. However, in the past, they were connected by hinges, which locked the Duke and Duchess's gazes. Today, the hinge has been abandoned, and the paintings share an elaborate gold frame at Florence's Uffizi Gallery.
The work captures the Duke of Urbino, Federico da Montefeltro
He was the commander of a band of mercenaries who would be hired out by Italian city-states to battle on their behalf
The fortune Montefeltro made from this bloody line of work was used to transform the hill town of Urbino into a grand court as well as to finance works of art that would assure his legacy
Art historians believe Piero began the Duke's commissioned portrait as early as 1465
Before Piero could complete the matching panel
the 26-year-old Duchess Battista Sforza died of acute pneumonia brought on by childbirth on July 7
Some have suggested her pale skin is not a sign of status—women of privilege didn't toil in the sun—but more the pallor of death
The artist likely used Sforza's death mask for reference
Montefeltro preferred that his battle scars not be preserved for posterity
A brutal bout of jousting at a tournament cost him his right eye and a chunk of his nose
Traditionally the subjects of profile portraits face the right
But the effect of him facing left is that it locks his eyes with his lady
suggesting they share a bond that transcends death
Humanist courts of the 15th century were very fond of collecting coins of ancient Rome
a tradition that has carried through to currency all over the world
The Duke and Duchess are poised high above the landscape in the background
they have a bird's eye view over their sprawling domain
speaking not only to Urbino's hilltop position
When these paintings were made, high foreheads were all the rage
Ladies would dedicatedly pluck away at their hairlines to achieve this coveted look
That's a diptych standard. The specially crafted frame at the Uffizi allows for visitors to walk around and see both sides of Portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Urbino. On the back lies an elaborate scene that depicts the Duke and Duchess approaching each other
Joining the Duke and Duchess on their carts are characters meant as the physical embodiments of Virtues
it reads: "He rides illustrious in glorious triumph
The eternal fame of his virtues celebrates [him] as equal to the greatest dukes
She who observed modesty in success flies on all men’s lips
honoured by the praise of her great husband’s exploits.”
The dates are hazy, but it's believed the painter took commissions from Montefeltro for nearly 20 years, resulting in works like The Flagellation and Brera Madonna
which presented the 50-year-old Duke in armor kneeling before the Virgin Mary
A 2008 medical study argued that Portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Urbino and Brera Madonna presented substantial enough evidence to prove that Montefeltro could have been diagnosed with thoracic hyperkyphosis
The works of this Early Renaissance artist have fascinated art enthusiasts for centuries
in part because he used his mathematics background to work out the pleasing shapes and staging of his scenes
Art historians who've studied Seurat's masterpieces A Sunday on La Grande Jatte —1884 and Bathers at Asnières argue there is a connection between the painter and Piero
They believe the 19th century French painter's predilection for profile subjects and simple forms shaped by use of light was inspired by Piero's signature style

I am very happy to be here today to help inaugurate a new course in American literature
I want to congratulate Adjunct Professor Giuliana Gardellini who is with us today and who will teach the new course in Anglo American literature here at the University of Urbino
Since I know many of you are fluent in English
This new course is a major accomplishment for both the U.S
Mission to Italy’s priorities is supporting and promoting American Studies in Italy
American Studies has historically been a key channel for connecting with Italian youth and universities in Italy
I heard about the decline of American Studies as an academic discipline at Italian universities
Despite the strong interest by undergraduate and graduate students in studying American literature and history
many universities have not been replacing retiring senior American Studies faculty members or promoting junior faculty for budgetary and bureaucratic reasons
we explored different ways in which the U.S
Mission could assist to help revive American Studies and re-energize course content across Italy
we decided to grant a special fund to support eight new temporary adjunct professorships
four in American History – one each at the universities of Trento
and four in American Literature -(one each at the universities of Pisa
We chose the universities based on our assessment that this seed support could lead to the establishment of additional American Studies teaching positions
The University of Trento inaugurated the first new course in American history in February
and the University of Macerata launched the second in October
Our other university partners will be launching their courses this coming year
We have been thrilled with the progress so far
This American Studies Initiative is the result of a successful joint effort by the U.S
AISNA (the Italian Association of North Americas Studies)
AISNA has worked with the universities to establish the teaching positions and incorporate the new courses into the curriculum
The Centro Studi Americani has administered the funds and amplified the program in partnership with AISNA
I would like to take this opportunity to announce that we have just renewed the grant to continue funding adjunct professorships in the eight universities for the academic year 2018-2019
And I am even happier to report that we have added two more universities to the roster: the University of Florence for American Literature
and the University of Cagliari for American History
I am also pleased to highlight a dedicated American Studies page on the U.S
Embassy website which offers updates on the American Studies Initiative
provides links to American Studies conferences
and serves as a general resource for students and professors
Please pick up a book mark with the webpage address
and share the news with your friends and colleagues
We have been gratified to see the outpouring of support and enthusiasm for this initiative from the American Studies academic community
The ultimate aim of our initiative is to grow American Studies in Italy by underscoring the tremendous interest in the field here
and to encourage universities to prioritize funding to renew adjunct professorship positions in American literature and history
we were delighted to learn this fall that the University of Naples L’Orientale has approved a new tenure-track position in American History and International Relations
We have high hopes that other universities will follow the University of Naples’ excellent example and that American Studies teaching positions will begin to reopen throughout Italy
Your presence and support here today is a wonderful
