up +2.4% compared to the corresponding period of 2023
Box terminal facilities performed strongly
reporting a rise of +33.7% in containerised cargo on August of the previous year
in addition to the solid bulk sector which recorded a leap of +49% on 2023
with a slight drop of -0.4% on the same month of last year
whilst mineral oils fell by -33.2% due to ongoing maintenance works at the local oil refineries
Downward trend across the liquid bulk industry
with a -44.7% decrease on the corresponding period of 2023 as a result of a fall of -63.7% in chemical products
Container volumes rose to 255,445 TEUs in August 2024
up +18.4% on the corresponding period of the previous year
bolstered by a 194.5% surge in transhipment
The substantial growth in traffic across this commodity sector reflects the rescheduling of calls made by global carriers at the Ports of Genoa in response to ongoing disruptions caused by the attacks in the Red Sea
box traffic in the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado totals 1,879,118 TEUs
a +1.3% increase on last year's comparable period
The busy passenger port also performed strongly
and totalling over 2 million across the first eight-month period of 2024
due to a reduction in ship calls for on-site works in progress
and total 1,471,888 in the first eight months of the year
containerised cargo by +16% and conventional cargo by +12.1% on April 2023
the growth in container traffic has boosted the port's modal split
The upward trend in total tonnage registered by the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority and the strong performance of other strategic sectors

A Maltese-flagged oil tanker transporting Russian oil to Europe was rocked by two explosions while docked in the port of Savona in northwestern Italy last week
The vessel Seajewel was transporting oil from Russia to Europe despite sanctions, making it a part of Russian President Vladimir Putin's so-called "shadow fleet," Ukrainian news outlet Ukrainska Pravda reported on Monday
Newsweek has contacted Russia's Foreign Ministry for comment by email
Russia's "shadow fleet" operates in the Baltic Sea and consists of old vessels that often operate under opaque ownership and lack adequate insurance
frequently changing their flag registrations
These vessels account for around 17 percent of oil tankers globally
Last month, Washington announced fresh sanctions against "an unprecedented number of oil-carrying vessels," many of which are part of the shadow fleet
Russia put together its shadow fleet to circumvent curbs on its oil exports in response to Western sanctions levied after Putin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022
The oil tanker Seajewel suffered a series of explosions while unloading oil in the early hours of Saturday morning
Italian news outlet IVG reported on Monday

The Ports of Genoa closed 2024 with a +1.2% growth rate in total throughput on the previous year
notwithstanding the challenges posed by the geopolitical risks and economic turmoil which characterised the past year
the Red Sea crisis and the disruptions caused by the Suez Canal trade chokepoints. The difficult market conditions had varying impacts on the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado Ligure’s diverse commodity sectors
in line with overall trends registered across the global supply chain industry
containerised traffic rose by +5.7% on 2023 to 26,834,571 tons and by +2.9% to 2,820,501 TEUs
a record high since the merger of the two ports in 2017
whilst conventional general cargo remained flat at 14,520,949 tons
a +7.8% overall increase on the previous year
in part caused by the closure in the third quarter of 2024 of the main oil refinery connected with the Ports of Genoa; whilst industrial traffic plummeted by -37.2% in relation to the level of uncertainty which continued across the year at the Genoa Cornigliano steel plant
Although the ferry passenger port posted a +1.4% advance on last year
the total passenger count at the Ports of Genoa decreased by an overall -4.5%
a contraction which was caused partly by recent market changes adopted by the cruise lines calling at Genoa and Savona
In 2024 passenger throughput totalled 5,005,852
which breaks down into 2,283,693 cruise and 2,722,159 ferry
For more information go to the page Port Statistics
The month of August 2024 witnesses an increase in overall throughput across the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado Ligure to 4,992,670 tons
recorded a contraction in trade in the second quarter of 2023
Conventional general cargo dipped by -1.6% (+0.2%..
The project’s strategy was grounded on consolidation and rationalization of business in Savona and on the expansion of Vado Ligure port area
in particular aimed to upgrade cruise terminal facilities
to make landfill reclamation alongside the breakwater and build a new road access to Savona port area
to complete the port-city area regeneration
as well as the functional and urban re-qualification of the coastline between Savona and Albissola with the construction of a new marina in Margonara
The greatest development opportunities pivoted on the Port of Vado
being positioned outside the city centre but supported by efficient road links to major transport corridors
showed high potential for hosting new infrastructures
The expansion Plan envisaged to restore former bulker business and set up a new container terminal
while also restructuring road access and reducing environmental impact
except for landfill operations and the new marina
whereas the expansion of Vado Ligure logistic hub is still in progress
further growth opportunities are to be assessed on the ground of a unified perspective agreed with Genoa port in compliance with the new Masterplan which is currently being conceived by Sea Port Authority

with an increase in cargo throughput of +11.3% on the corresponding period of the previous year to a monthly total of 5,759,747 tons
it is important to note that the figures released by the container and multipurpose terminals indicate that the extent of the impact of the Red Sea crisis on the Mediterranean ports and
on the Ligurian ports is as yet not fully clear
as the negative statistics registered in March have now been followed by a set of highly positive results
April's resurgence now boosts total freight volumes for the first four months of 2024 to 21,355,517 tons
box traffic recorded an increase of +12.7% on April 2023
bolstered above all by a +6.2% rise in full container gateway traffic and a 72.7% surge in transhipment
exports rose by +6,7% and imports by +5,4%; whilst the growth in transhipment at the Port of Vado Ligure
is due to a series of spot calls which were introduced to replace the scheduled liner services that have been cancelled as a result of the disruptions caused by the attacks in the Red Sea
across the Ports of the Western Ligurian Sea
The liquid food bulk sector (-36.9%) and industrial activities (-38.8%) both sustained a fall in volumes
the latter due to the debate underway regarding the future prospects of the Acciaierie d'Italia steelworks
Monthly passenger throughput is also in decline
although the first four months of the year have reported a gain of +1.6% - a total of 747,549 -
including a +5.5% advance in cruise passenger traffic on 2023 to 502,279

has historically been a hub of industrial activity
particularly in sectors such as shipbuilding
Savona has experienced significant deindustrialisation over the past few decades
This transition has led to economic challenges
local authorities and stakeholders have been compelled to devise new strategies and policies to revitalise the economy and ensure sustainable growth
Historical Context of Industrialisation and Deindustrialisation
Savona’s industrial heritage dates back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries
when the region emerged as a pivotal centre for shipbuilding and heavy industry
The presence of a deep-water port facilitated trade and attracted significant investment
the latter half of the 20th century saw a decline in traditional industries due to globalisation
and increased competition from emerging markets
The shift towards a service-oriented economy and the relocation of manufacturing operations to countries with lower labour costs contributed to the decline
The closure of major industrial plants not only led to unemployment but also left behind environmental challenges
Deindustrialisation in Savona has resulted in several economic challenges
The loss of manufacturing jobs has had a ripple effect
impacting local businesses and reducing consumer spending
The skills mismatch has further exacerbated unemployment
as former industrial workers find it difficult to transition into new roles in emerging sectors
the decline in industrial activity has led to reduced tax revenues
limiting the capacity of local governments to invest in infrastructure and public services
the Province of Savona has embarked on a series of economic development strategies aimed at revitalising the region
The deindustrialisation of the Province of Savona presents both challenges and opportunities
While the decline of traditional industries has had a profound impact on the region’s economy
the adoption of new strategies focused on diversification
and sustainability offers a pathway to revitalisation
By leveraging its strengths and embracing change
Savona has the potential to emerge as a dynamic and resilient economy
providing a model for other regions facing similar transitions
The concerted efforts of local authorities
and communities will be essential in driving the region towards a prosperous and sustainable future

Spy crane woes. As recounted by the Wall Street Journal
the Pentagon is increasingly concerned that Chinese-made ship-to-shore cranes might be hosting and operating spying equipment
Some United States officials have compared them to “Trojan horses” because of the sophisticated sensors they are equipped with to monitor container movements
The logistic data flowing through the cranes could theoretically allow China to map the seaports’ traffic
over 27% of global container trade would have passed through ports owned
by Chinese and/or Hong Kong companies by 2021

Italian authorities have launched a terrorism investigation into explosions that damaged an oil tanker anchored off the northern Italian coast late last week
citing a statement from the chief prosecutor of the city of Genoa
This is the latest of four similar incidents in the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas in the past month
Two explosions opened a hole below the waterline of the Greek-flagged tanker carrying crude oil
which was anchored on Saturday near the port of Vado Ligure - in the municipality of Savona
in the northwestern Italian region of Liguria
It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the alleged attack on the cargo ship
which - like other tankers targeted by explosions - recently docked in a Russian port
Genoa Chief Prosecutor Nicola Piacente told Reuters in connection with the explosion on Saturday
The counter-terrorism department of the Genoa prosecutor's office is investigating suspicions of "a shipwreck aggravated by terrorist intentions," Piacente said
announced that its vessels' regular services were suspended on February 15
"The ship's crew and representatives of a third party involved in the commercial operations are unharmed
The incident did not cause any environmental damage," the company "Tenamaris" said
adding that it was cooperating with Italian authorities
Lawmakers from Italy's opposition "5 Star Movement" said the incident was "of a terrorist nature" and called for a report on the investigation to be presented to parliament once it is complete
The causes of the previous three explosions on oil tankers in the Mediterranean are not known
The ships in question were docked at Russian ports
Another ship operated by "Tenamaris" - "Seacharm" - suffered damage in a similar incident
Greek authorities are investigating what happened to the vessel in the incident last month
note) is currently operating normally," said "Tenamaris"
was damaged and subsequently anchored in the Russian Baltic port of Ust-Luga
The Russian cargo ship "Ursa Major" sank in the Mediterranean Sea in late December last year after an explosion in its engine room
as announced by the Russian Foreign Ministry

A new off-dock rail facility for both port terminals (4 lanes
450m length) provides rapid access for up to 14 trains per day
to central and northern Europe such as Switzerland
APM Terminals Vado Ligure has set itself a target of moving 40 percent of containers arriving or departing from Vado Gateway by rail
launched today in Vado Ligure and operated by APM Terminals
sets a new standard for port infrastructure in Italy
The facility is unique in terms of services and technology
from its automated yard to its truck appointment system
Vado Gateway is the most important port infrastructure development in Italy over the last decades and the result of a 450-million-euro investment
has invested 180 million in the project (43 million provided by project financing)
Chinese Partners Cosco Shipping Ports have a 40% share and Qingdao Port International a 9.9% share
The terminal was commissioned by Autorità di Sistema Portuale del Mar Ligure Occidentale (Western Ligurian Sea System Port Authority)
which will now entrust APM Terminals with the management of the facility for the next 50 years
During a ceremony attended by the Vice-Minister for Italian Infrastructures and Transport Mr
managing director of APM Terminals Vado Ligure
said: “We are proud that this project phase has been completed successfully and we are now ready to operate our new terminal
Thanks to great collaboration with all our partners and authorities
we have been able to overcome challenges and can now focus on offering our customers excellent service.”
The Vado Gateway terminal is expected to significantly increase the competitiveness of the Ligurian and Italian port infrastructure
making it a true hub for cargo moving to the northern part of the country
It is therefore referred to as one of the maritime terminals on the “New Silk Road”
The new terminal has already secured two important services operated by A.P
connecting the Mediterranean to the Middle East and India
connecting the Mediterranean to North America
APM Terminals Vado Ligure also operates the adjacent Vado Ligure Reefer Terminal
the largest logistic hub in the Mediterranean dedicated to fruit
Vado Gateway capacity will amount to circa 900,000 TEUs per year
together with the 250,000 TEUs of the Reefer Terminal
will allow the Port of Vado to handle over one million TEUs every year
which significantly increases the competitiveness of the Ligurian and Italian port infrastructure
It will initially operate on a 450-metre part of the quay
but from July 2020 its whole 700-metre extension will be available for use
With a draft at quay level of 17.25 metres and height of 4.5 metres above sea level
Vado Gateway will be able to accommodate and operate the latest generation Ultra Large Container Ships (ULCS) without any limitations
Vado Gateway is also equipped with the latest technologies
The yard used for container storage and handling is the first in Italy to be completely automated
Automatic Rail Mounted Gantry (ARMG) cranes will work autonomously under the remote supervision of highly specialised operators
This will guarantee the highest safety standards
as no personnel will be present in this area while containers are being moved
Access to the yard will only be allowed for maintenance work when the cranes are not operating
The containers unloaded at Vado Gateway will be immediately recorded with a dynamic video camera set on the ship-to-shore (STS) cranes
and the information sent to the Terminal Operating System (TOS)
highly advanced and fully integrated with all other equipment
allows real time tracking of each container.
Container handling from the quay to internal exchange areas
and from there to the yard and exchange areas for road transport (exchange grid)
will be carried out by straddle carriers - hybrid-powered equipment with an operator on board
receiving instructions directly from the TOS.
Vado Gateway will be equipped with one of the most technologically advanced systems in Italy for the access of trucks
reversible lanes provide access to the terminal
facilitating flow management by means of the truck appointment system
Truck drivers arriving at the access gate will have previously booked their appointment and received relevant confirmation via a web interface connected to the information systems
they will proceed through an optical reader
which will identify the driver by the vehicle number plate and container number
Another important feature is the intermodal connection potential
APM Terminals’ target is to move 40% of containers arriving to or departing from Vado Gateway by rail
taking advantage of the rail infrastructure which is currently under development in Vado
around 4-5 trains will connect Vado with several intermodal hubs in the North and East of the country
but the number is forecast to increase over time
Vado Gateway and the Reefer Terminal will employ around 390 people (240 from Vado Gateway and 150 from Reefer Terminal) by the end of January 2020
The majority will be covered by a framework agreement signed with the Trade Unions a year ago
the Vado Gateway will employ more than 300
A significant number of employees have been hired thanks to training and requalification programmes developed specifically for the unemployed
These will provide new opportunities in an area which was recently hit by the industrial crisis and has witnessed the closing or downsizing of several large companies
A new rail connection between the container and reefer terminals in Vado Ligure and Verona Porta Nuova inland port has been established
The twice weekly service is managed by Maersk Italia and operated by Logtainer connect
The Vado Ligure port system includes the Vado Gateway deep-sea Container Terminal
and is the largest hub in the Mediterranean for fruit logistics.
With the addition of this new rail connection
there are now five connections between Vado Ligure and destinations including Porta Nuova
Together they offer approximately 12-14 weekly trains that can be increased to meet customer demand
“We are happy to announce this new rail connection with Verona Porta Nuova
an additional important service we can offer to logistics operators,” comments Paolo Cornetto - CEO of Vado Gateway and Reefer Terminal
Vado Gateway has strengthened its offer of rail services to the most important logistics centers in Northern Italy,” continues Cornetto “We are proud to be among the main port infrastructures in the country when it comes to the use of rail transport
In the future we should also be able to leverage the railway system being built by the Port System Authority of the Western Ligurian Sea
This infrastructure is key to us reaching a 40% intermodality quota
a key operational requirement for the new container Terminal."

Mattia Villardita at APM Terminals Vado Ligure in Italy has been impersonating his favourite superhero and paying young hospital patients uplifting visits
but his engagement and passion never changed a bit
Mattia Villardita looks like an ordinary terminal employee who likes what he does and appreciates the people he works with
But there is another personality hidden beneath the protective gear and APM Terminals uniform
who visits young patients in nearby hospitals to keep the children’s spirits high and “bring an explosion of colour into the grey hospital life they are used to”
“The idea to dress up as Spiderman and engage in goodwill work came from my desire to personally do some good and show gratitude for the help I received when I was a patient myself,” shares Mattia
Having to undergo multiple surgeries on one leg until the age of 20
Mattia spent countless hours and days in hospitals
an experience that profoundly changed his life
you see the world through a different lens and appreciate small things in life
Many people don’t realise how lucky they really are
a mission almost,” he says before adding: “You simply either have this thing in you
this thing was not only his willingness to help
but also a superhero waiting to be revealed
initially bought for a party among friends
gradually became a regular after-hours outfit
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought yet another level of seriousness to the life of Mattia’s young proteges
but he found them surprisingly mature and conscious of the situation
“I never had to lie to them or invent an imaginary villain to explain the situation,” he shares
adds an additional challenge for small patients
who are already very isolated in hospitals
Not being able to visit them in person didn’t stop Mattia and his superhero alter ego from acting
so Spiderman went online and has so far enjoyed over 700 video calls with young patients
“I still cheer them up and tell them not to worry and that sometimes even Spiderman needs to stay at home for a good cause
This helps them feel less alone and it’s also greatly appreciated by parents.”
Mattia assures that Spiderman has many more plans in the pipeline
and he can’t wait for the isolation to be over
so he can once again be physically present with his young friends
he is practicing his tricks and may even be able to throw his spiderweb soon
“You won’t believe how many times I’ve been asked to do that,” he laughs
which had its grand opening less than a year ago
has remained fully operational throughout the pandemic thanks to strict safety and hygiene measures and smart ways of working
Its young and vibrant workforce (the average age being below 30) is very proud of its contribution to the local community and the economy
“We have a great team and great culture
which truly inspires us to give the most of us and excel in whatever we do,” says Mattia
so he takes up his usual post at the terminal every day
Committed to always giving his best in whatever he does
Mattia is happy to not have to choose between his career and charity work – or make any sacrifices
“This work-life balance allows me to fully focus on two important pillars of my life
It’s great to be with a company that supports my charity work and has even offered me a new superhero costume to continue my passion.”
Despite his obvious superpowers and recent attention from national media
Mattia remains a modest and down-to-earth guy who only wants to make people happy – and bring a lot of colour into his own life
It’s about the small things we can all do everyday to make some good
but we also have many ways of making it meaningful.”
