American troops entered this Venetian city and defeated a ragged but determined German force to reclaim it for an alliance on the cusp of victory in Europe a slate of reminders sought to drive the story of Vicenza’s liberation home for those serving today “You can’t go very far in Vicenza without tripping over our historical past,” said Kevin Shea Army Reserve officer and field historian working at Caserma Ederle as a contractor A small group of soldiers toured World War II battle sites around Vicenza on Monday Vicenza was a major transport and communications hub for the Germans thanks to its new roads It also had an air base at what is now Caserma Del Din Allied forces were racing north to secure Italian borders and capture Germans ideally in the Po Valley before they could reach the Alps and retreat American forces liberated Bologna before pushing toward Verona where they had a brief but fierce engagement That set the stage for the Battle of Vicenza on April 27-28 historian of the 752nd Tank Battalion based in Connecticut has dedicated decades to studying this portion of the war The disorganized German forces were falling apart and had resorted to horse-drawn carriages But there were still thousands of them streaming toward Vicenza troops were already in the towns they were streaming toward,” Holt said After a vicious engagement outside Vicenza on April 27 the 88th Division Task Force Frye prepared to enter the city the Americans had about four tanks moving along the SR11 regional road when they were ambushed urban combat is the worst possible scenario,” Holt said American troops were attacked by German snipers hiding in buildings targeted with hand grenades thrown from roofs a weapon similar to a bazooka that fires projectiles that enter a tank and then destroy it from the inside out they were forced to drive with their hatches open it was the worst casualty day of the entire war Sixteen American soldiers were wounded in addition to the three killed Eight Silver Stars and three Bronze Stars were awarded for actions in Vicenza that morning The entire unit was awarded a distinguished unit citation “The spirit of these people needs to be remembered,” Holt said “It wasn’t just a bunch of guys sending their men forward into battle These were officers right up to the colonel of the infantry American forces continued their race toward the border It was the most heavily bombed city in the Veneto region with destruction to homes and iconic buildings The roof was burned off the Palladian Basilica in the center of town and the main church was almost completely destroyed “Our front yards were a front line,” said Randall Jackson who recently recorded a podcast about the battle “New soldiers can’t relate without hearing these stories.” The 80th anniversary remembrances in and around Vicenza over the weekend also offered cause for jubilation William Cantrell of the 173rd Brigade Support Battalion was watching a group of Italians dancing in celebration Sunday and suddenly was pulled into the action himself “I was on the side and this little old lady just took my hand,” said Cantrell Italian reenactor Enrico Ricci was also on hand wearing an American military uniform with a unit patch from the Army’s tank destroyer battalion “It’s important because it’s been a long time since the war,“ Ricci said Also taking place Monday was a screening of “The Lost Mountaineers,” a documentary about the 25 men of the 10th Mountain Division who lost their lives in Lake Garda at the end of World War II A brief film that team when Jackson Shorey had a goal and an assist in the boys match to open Saturday’s play That just meant that Emerson Shorey had a bit more motivation in the girls contest Are the two siblings a little competitive with each other very,” Jackson Shorey said with a tight smile after the Wildcat boys blanked BFA 4-0 His sister was a bit more nuanced after scoring three times in the Naples girls’ 4-1 victory over the Falcons Emerson Shorey was a part of the Wildcats’ last two Division II title teams earning All-Europe second-team honors as a freshman in 2023 She scored a goal in the team’s title win last year but hasn’t been the main player whom opposing teams key on in previous seasons “We love Emerson,” BFA coach Jack Wilson said with a wry smile We also tried our best to stop her scoring today Shorey didn’t wait long to equal her older brother’s goal total blasting a shot into the net from a tough angle – near the end line about 20 yards from the goal heading Jazmin Miranda’s corner kick into the net from the far side of the penalty area 3 came early in the second half when her free kick from about 35 yards away took a tricky bounce and eluded the Falcons’ keeper before finding the net She accounted for part of the Wildcats’ last goal as well taking a shot from about 30 yards out that deflected off a BFA defender to Ava Williams The senior striker took the ball in the air and kicked it in got on the scoreboard with a little more than 10 minutes left when Anna Yancey found the Naples goalie too far in front of the goal and launched a high-arching kick from about 30 yards out into an empty net Naples coach Maria Oropallo said she likes where her team is at a strong midfield including Jazmin Miranda and Emma Heavey good defenders … we have a lot of strengths.” The Wildcats scored their first two goals – and had several more good chances – off set pieces and gave goalkeeper Joey Randazzo most of the match off BFA didn’t get off a shot on goal in the opening half as Naples built a 1-0 lead Alessandro Vavra put his team on the board by lofting a free kick about 20 yards from the goal over a wall of defenders and off the keeper’s hands and into the net Falcons coach Joe Batluck said his tired team severely cut back on counterattacks having just played Vicenza late Friday night after a series of travel delays and issues getting on the base “That strategy worked in the first half,” he said because the team trailed only 1-0 despite getting outshot 13-0 A few Wildcat shots either hit the outside of the goal or the football goal post just on top of it Or they were saved by BFA’s goalie duo of Dash Dockrey and Nehemiah Perryman Naples scored again early in the second half on a set play as Finn Stephens headed in a corner from Shorey The Wildcats’ final two goals came from their two most skilled players just making solo runs on goal Shorey beat two defenders in a short run from the right side of the goal and then fired almost point blank into the net Vavra earned his second goal by taking a throw in from the left side of the goal and then dribbling through five BFA defenders before booting the ball in Italy — The Army in Italy has launched an online vehicle registration system which officials say will reduce time service members and their families spend settling in as the busy summer moving season approaches The new system allows soldiers and civilian employees to submit most paperwork electronically Once the preliminary information is approved registration is finalized during an in-person appointment that should take just five to 10 minutes “Before we were doing most of this stuff in person This should be something that is easy and convenient for newcomers,” said Rick Scavetta A Stars and Stripes reporter recently tried out the new system Users fill out an online form with personal information and vehicle specifications then receive an email with instructions for sending copies of documents such as the registration and title The documents should be approved within a few days the applicant should receive a message asking for information users receive an email with appointment details for payment and signatures Registration renewal appointments can be made on the U.S The program was tested at Camp Darby in February and is now available at Caserma Ederle and Del Din in Vicenza Adoption of the speedier process by the Army in Italy comes on the heels of a huge backlog that began last year for Defense Department personnel at various places in Germany The changes in Italy are different from those in Germany But he added that the goal is the same: to get people out of administrative tasks and back to work as soon as possible “These things can be really time consuming holland.rebecca@stripes.com @_RebeccaHolland Italy — A program that guided the Army’s female soldiers along their career path has been renamed and opened to men as the services work to comply with new Pentagon rules and executive orders on diversity The group formerly known as “Women of the Herd” is now simply called the mentorship program in Vicenza which is home to the 173rd Airborne Brigade A separate Ranger School mentorship program a female soldier had planned to form for women is also now on pause the brigade’s annual parachute jump for women took place over the skies of northern Italy with the addition of some men The changes underscore how the Army and other services are attempting to adapt programs originally meant for subsets of service members who may face challenges said in remarks before a leadership talk in late March that was part of the mentorship program “There are teammates here that will talk to each other and say things they wouldn’t say to others.” has encouraged mentoring to help identify gaps and promote its values an Army Research Institute-funded study by the University of Kansas did find differences in how mentorship was perceived among the sexes The 2022 report said that while men in the Army often used mentorship as a tool to advance many women view it as a way to survive in a male-dominated field Erica Plaisance started the female mentorship program at Vicenza The group meets twice a month for breakfast and attends occasional talks from people outside their unit “We have a lot of young soldiers who don’t know the opportunities the Army has,” Plaisance said which included about 50 women and four men She spoke about her 29 years in the military and said it took significant time for some men to accept her and other women but you can actually do the same things we’re doing,’” Trent said “It was very challenging from a female perspective because not only were we not wanted but we didn’t have anyone to turn to,” she said The parachute jump for both women and men happened the following day videos and social media posts celebrating last year’s all-women jump were initially removed from Army websites and social media as the services moved to take down information that might be viewed as promoting DEI initiatives They have since been restored after further review This year’s event in the skies over the province of Pordenone featured two Air Force planes and 94 jumping participants “We didn’t want to get rid of the opportunity to mentor young soldiers and there are plenty of male soldiers who support women,” brigade spokeswoman Capt “So it’s a mixed jump and sometimes it’s just fun to jump out of an airplane.” Italy – Simon Gilbert towers over most of his peers on – and off – the basketball court But Vicenza’s 6-foot-8 junior center used his size advantage Friday night in a way that he never could playing video games grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked 10 shots in an 82-63 victory over the Naples Wildcats proving that the high-octane Cougars can do pretty well when the game slows down as well Gilbert gave credit to his teammates for feeding him the ball and said a pair of recent losses to Division I powerhouse Wiesbaden – Vicenza’s only losses this season – may have both played a big part in his performance “We learned (against Wiesbaden) that we should work the ball more to get the best shot.” It’s fairly hard to get better shots than Gilbert got for much of Friday He was 6 inches taller than any Wildcat defender And he didn’t take a shot – except from the free throw line – more than a few feet away from the basket Gilbert had never played basketball before his freshman year Before that: “I didn’t play a lot of sports Vicenza coach Jesse Woods taught him three different post moves Woods said Friday was Gilbert’s best game of his career But while Gilbert’s offense was a welcome addition to the Cougars’ attack it was on defense that he really stood out - not only did he block 10 shots but he altered many as the Wildcats were more than aware of his presence when they got in close The Cougars led only 14-10 after a quarter but a 29-13 second-quarter advantage essentially led fans to only wonder what the winning margin was going to be Vicenza stretched the lead to 36 points a few times but Naples battled back each time to avoid the game ending due to DODEA-Europe’s 39-point mercy rule “We didn’t give up,” Wildcats coach Craig Lord said [Avoiding the mercy rule] became our short-term goal.” Naples did that thanks to some hot shooting Bothv Jeramiah Robinson and Jettyn Jones connected from long distance multiple times in the second half as the Wildcats scored 50 points after intermission Robinson finished with a game-high 28 and Jones had 19 Dylan Horrigan had 20 points and Ben Harlow 18 for the Cougars who play Black Forest Academy on Saturday after the Falcons and Wildcats play each other Naples 31: A cold second quarter doomed the Wildcats in the opening game as well as the Cougars used a 27-2 advantage to blow open a close game that never got close after that Naples turned the ball over 24 times in the first half alone Vicenza’s Jenina Smith (10 steals) and Trishauna Lewis (eight steals) were particular pests in a pressing defense that has seemed to become the team’s trademark “We look to see how [opposing teams] handle the ball and if they’ve only got one ballhandler we harass that player,” Vicenza coach John Kohut said Naples junior Emma Heavey bore much of the responsibility for getting the ball up the court Heavey paid attention and eventually started to turn the tables “When we can’t secure the ball and we don’t run an offense past two passes those are not good formulas for success,” Naples coach Jim Davis said The Wildcats did actually outscore the Cougars in the second half as Vicenza eased its pressure a bit and tried a slower approach on offense Kohut admitted his team did struggle adjusting to that new pace and it was a good chance to work on a slower approach “We do well when we’re active and pressuring,” he said Smith finished with 17 points and Lewis 16 for the Cougars while Heavey had a team-high 12 for Naples Italy — Recent break-ins at the off-post homes of U.S military personnel stationed at area Army bases are shining a spotlight on property crime just ahead of the winter holidays American families in and around Vicenza have reported 20 break-ins to military police so far this year The scattered crimes have not targeted a particular neighborhood there were 28 break-ins at military-affiliated households in the Vicenza area While the number doesn’t show an upward trend families of American personnel have described brazen criminal behavior in posts to Facebook who lives about 8 miles outside of Vicenza with her Army spouse had $10,000 worth of jewelry stolen over Veteran’s Day Weekend Police think the thieves climbed up to her second-floor balcony and opened the electric shutters with a credit card “We believe they saw us leaving with a suitcase and knew that we were gone,” Govea said People also have rung the doorbell from time to time possibly to check whether the family is home adding that one of those instances happened at 11 p.m Others have posted on Facebook about having their windows kicked in and seeing men in ski masks loitering outside homes the city of Vicenza said it would install at least nine additional cameras to be monitored by police hire additional officers and increase patrols throughout the city center Attempts to reach the police department for comment on those measures were unsuccessful But Italian authorities have told their U.S military counterparts that the issue is not unique to Americans “Thefts occur at about the same rate among Italians,” Scavetta said There are about 14,000 Americans living in the Vicenza area One way to mitigate the risk of home-invasion theft in some cases is to have a good relationship with their neighbors Leaving trash cans or mail out for days can alert would-be thieves that the occupant is out of town A neighbor can bring them in and keep an eye out for suspicious activity “Minimize leaving valuable objects in the front yard or porch; don’t leave valuables in your car,” Scavetta said don’t put the box from the purchase in the trash on the street Install camera surveillance for easy monitoring Italy — Construction is underway on four phases of a $500 million housing project in Vicenza that will provide 478 homes to Army families by 2028 The first 111 of the units at Caserma Ederle and Villagio are scheduled to be completed near the end of 2025 Another 260 units are on track for the summer of 2027 Standards for military housing have changed a lot since that time an engineer overseeing the project for the public works department at U.S A three-bedroom home in the old units was about 900 square feet while the new three-bedroom units will be 1,614 square feet Millers said the Army was seeing families living in off-post housing return to the U.S which was part of the reasoning for this project A lot of young soldiers are moving overseas with their families for the first time familiarity — it’s very important for them,” Millers said townhouses and single-family homes available with three There will be 50 apartment units at Caserma Ederle neighborhoods named after Italian cities will have a playground and a dog park The community will have a recreation trail and a central pavilion as well as a path to allow children to walk to school without encountering traffic The modernized units will have American-friendly amenities that often aren’t found off post and child-safety locks on some kitchen drawers and they will be outfitted with new loaner furniture until the families’ belongings arrive “Reducing the time from the plane to getting settled was a priority for the command,” said Rick Scavetta green and tan to match other housing in Vicenza and they’ll be under about 65 feet high to comply with local law this was the largest military housing project worldwide it had to be divided into four phases and contracts but because they were awarded at different times they have different contractors “There’s a lot of coordination that has to take place,” said Navy Cmdr the resident officer in charge of construction with the Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command One move NAVFAC took to simplify construction was to build an enclave The projects are fenced in and have their own entrances so that contractors don’t have to get approved for base access The fences also keep kids going to school on Villagio safe There will be a fifth phase to build a housing office and community room Italy — Soldiers and their families in Vicenza reveled in their chance this week to meet with a variety of celebrities and enjoy a USO holiday show touring Europe Caserma Del Din and Caserma Ederle welcomed former NFL star defensive tackle Vince Wilfork comedians Hunter Hill and Melissa Villaseñor all but two of them with the New England Patriots who won the Super Bowl twice during his time with them He was a five-time Pro Bowl selection and made first-team All-Pro in 2012 Wilfork joked and took photos with eager fans including Casey Hall a specialist in the 173rd Airborne Brigade brought her 10-month-old daughter in a Patriots onesie “I grew up in New England and am a huge Patriots fan,” she said vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff kicked off the nighttime show Tuesday that followed the meet-and-greet “This is a great opportunity to spend a lot of time with the 173rd,” he said The tour started at Naval Station Rota in Spain before coming to Vicenza and it will make seven stops across Europe Grady said it was important for giving back to soldiers and their families Grady added that he hoped the tour could bring a bit of the U.S single soldiers who can’t go home and don’t have family in Italy The performers said their favorite part of the tour so far has been hanging out with troops over meals and learning about what they do day to day who had a role in the TV series “Nashville” and “Outer Banks” and was a regular on the comedy show “Whose Line is it Anyway?” in its early years Esten and fellow performer Hill have personal ties to Italy while Esten’s wife was born in Naples and grew up playing sports on military bases This is the second USO tour for both performers a country singer whose debut album “Two Thousand Miles” was released in 2020 is on his first USO tour and said the experience has been one of the most rewarding of his career so far but the real time we’ve gotten to spend with the troops is amazing,” he said adding that the tour has made such an impact that footage from it will feature in his newest music video “I’ve got a song coming out called ‘Give Up to Get It,’ about everything we give up to get our dreams,” he said you’re surrounded by people who make it worth it.” service members stationed elsewhere in Europe can check the Facebook page of their local USO to see whether remaining stops on the holiday tour will be in their area The tour will visit Naval Air Station Sigonella in Sicily on Thursday and Naples on Friday on a weekday and I’m staring at a half chicken I’m not sure I ordered My Italian is mediocre and my brain is hazy This is my first time at a restaurant post-pregnancy and the first glass of sparkling wine I’ve had in a little over nine months and I feel giddy to be out in the world but also disoriented without a newborn attached to me But it looks divine and I notice almost everyone is eating the same thing a restaurant we wouldn’t have considered going to if much else had been open on a Wednesday afternoon But I’m beginning to think of this as serendipity leading to worries that we’d look underdressed in our sweaty workout clothes compared to the Italians who in Vicenza almost always look chic and pulled together even at the grocery store or on the hiking trail But Le Quattro Stagione is packed with a mix of construction workers white or sparkling?” the waitress asks when we sit down But red or white is the expectation here as part of the set menu Both are set unceremoniously in unmarked bottles on the tables around us One of my favorite things about living in Italy is that you can take any type of container to the market and fill it up to serve at home or in your restaurant for weeks Le Quattro Stagione is also one of the few places I’ve been in Vicenza where no one on the waitstaff speaks English The server realizes our Italian is far from fluent and flashes a look that says After understanding about half of what the waitress says and I get a creamy pasta while my husband gets a ragu so I’m not sure where the confusion occurred the construction workers are downing a bottle of red An older man with another man in his 20s or 30s I smile at how normal it is in Italy to enjoy some wine and head back to the office A three-course meal with wine and coffee cost us 35 euros We loved the restaurant so much we brought my mom a few days later we thought we were ready for the full Italian language experience we each ended up with two full orders of different pasta I think based on a question I did not ask correctly the waitress thought we wanted to try everything We were such an anomaly that the chef came out to ask how it was going pouring our wine from the bottles already on the table We understood the menu and the waitress seemed relieved pasta with tomato sauce or pasta with ragu a skewer of mixed grilled meat or mixed boiled meat creamy but light with large chunks of pumpkin and perfect for a chilly winter day My skewer of mixed meat had a simple seasoning and a lot of char beef and a sausage with fennel and other spices There were two unidentified meats — maybe lamb I was most excited about those potatoes and a surprisingly flavorful I felt lucky to have snagged a spot amid the people clad in construction gear The restaurant was packed and a line of guests stood at the door A sign at the door even announces that “tables are reserved for workers.” While you can dine at Le Quattro Stagione on weekends a weekday lunch is the better time to go to get a real sense of the place The pasta is fine if not particularly distinguishable from others in Vicenza a lunch that is very Italian and very filling for a low price and the feeling that you are part of a community even if you understand only half of what’s going on Price: Coffee for 1.50 euros and full meals from 10-15 euros Italy — The parking crunch at Caserma Ederle should start to ease around mid-December as work on a wide-ranging $7 million steam pipe project wraps up in places on base that have been most affected parking and streets have been disrupted across the base While the project won’t be completed until 2025 the work will be mostly out of sight after this year encompasses almost the entire base and entails replacement of decades-old pipes with more efficient ones the base will realize about $750,000 a year in energy savings as a result “That translates to real dollars that go to other community projects,” said Callie Carmichael Some pipes are about 60 years old and the surrounding trenches have been soaked with rain destroying the insulation and making them less energy-efficient Most of Caserma Ederle’s domestic heating and all its hot water come from steam starting at a central energy plant near Community Bank under the sidewalks and throughout the base better-insulated steam lines run to a heat exchanger which converts steam to hot water and runs that to the buildings Transmission is improved because the switch means the steam won’t have to run from the central processing plant all the way to the various buildings when heat exchangers were activated in some areas “That will go up significantly because we’re hitting heating season,” he said The central processing plant had been losing more than 9 cubic meters of water per hour because of leaks the base has seen a 67% decrease in water loss following the installation of new pipes Germany – The Vicenza Wildcats had grown accustomed to waltzing past Division II opposition the past two years All thoughts of a second consecutive extravagant coronation quickly evaporated Saturday afternoon at the Wiesbaden Sports and Fitness Center on Clay Kaserne Marymount gave Vicenza all it could handle and made the Cougars sweat it out during the Division II title game of the 2025 DODEA European basketball championships The Cougars eventually managed to pull away for a 57-39 victory While the blowout victory over Naples the year before marked the program’s first in a decade this year’s had added meaning because the game was a dogfight “It was very important for us for us to know just because we won it last year nothing was given,” Vicenza guard Jace Herron said and I think that first half really showed us that.” Not that the Cougars (17-2) came into the season They brought back nine from last year’s squad including All-European performers Ben Harlow and Herron who left the team after his freshman season to play on the Italian side rejoined the program last year and noticed a major difference in the team’s quality “We’ve been so blessed with a bunch of kids with the right mindset,” said Harlow who was named the tournament MVP for the second straight season That’s how we were able to create a program where we’d go back to back.” That work prepared them for Marymount (7-7) which shocked the Cougars and the crowd in Wiesbaden by jumping out to a 12-4 advantage at the 2-minute Among the highlights were Gael Grant Rios scoring on a nifty reverse and Hiyab Haile lobbed a pass over the Vicenza defense to Oscar White in the paint committed nine turnovers in the first quarter something coach Jesse Woods said his squad needed to clean up His players did that with just 10 turnovers the rest of the game Herron gave Vicenza the lead for good with a pair of free throws at the 7:18 mark in the second quarter The lead hovered in the upper single digits until a Herron reverse and a Harlow steal on back-to-back possessions with a minute remaining in the third quarter pushed it to double digits at 40-27 “That team played great basketball tonight and it made us test ourselves mentally,” Woods said we missed some easy baskets underneath that would get us going 10 of which came off steals and layups on the other end Marymount coach Phil Davis had nothing but praise for his players that they made the title game In his first year in charge of the program Davis was hoping to change the culture at a school where soccer and tennis are the main sports Lorenzo Tranquilli paced Marymount with 15 points while Grant Rios contributed 10 points in the losing effort “I told the kids at the beginning of the year our goal was to play on Saturday,” Davis said I think they surprised a lot of people this year.” Woods poured water on any talk of a three-peat Joe Kelly and Micheal Darland – and he doesn’t know exactly what will happen during PCS season the foundation has been set for the program something in which the seniors take great pride “This (level of success) hasn’t happened at Vicenza for a long time so the fact that we were all a part of this is probably the highlight of my high school career,” Herron said Italy – Scorching summer temperatures may have dropped a bit but expectations are not cooling off for Vicenza cross country runners On a brisk and sunny Saturday morning in the hills outside Vicenza the Cougars hosted competitors from Aviano Sigonella and Rota and raced around Lago di Fimon in their second cross country meet of the season “I want to win Euros,” said Vicenza senior Mitchell Horrigan who won the boys race in a time of 17 minutes but he’s currently got the fastest time posted to Stars and Stripes this season and said the cooler weather will only help him improve because we’ve been [defeated] by Aviano the past few years,” he said freshman Kelsie Torgesen of Vicenza said she hopes to get her time under 21 minutes this season She won Saturday’s race with a time of 21:11 The course halfway around Lago di Fimon and back is flat hikers and families were sometimes an obstacle “The race was a little off for me,” Horrigan said The runners have four more meets until the championship takes place on Oct Germany – Vicenza held back a surging Black Forest Academy on Saturday and overcame a late injury to one of its key players to capture its first Division II volleyball title since 2021 capping off a perfect run in this year’s DODEA Europe tournament placing runner up in the tourney a year after falling to Aviano in the finals battled back after falling behind 16-1 in the first set forcing Vicenza to score 26 points to win the set and riding that momentum into a convincing win in the second set with soft dinks at the net instead of punching hard hits “We gave them back the same medicine they were doing by dinking once in a while and hitting some other big ones,” said John Kohut “I switched up our offense and defense as well.” BFA coach Kim McKell said her team has “some strong hitters that we probably didn’t utilize as much as we could have today but we were trying to poke holes in a pretty strong defense.” The Cougars were able to somewhat tamp down the Falcons’ powerful attacker who had 16 kills in the match and was named to the all-tournament team “She still got her hits in,” Kohut said of Sivonen “but we did better digging them up” in the third and fourth sets After falling behind 9-7 to open the third set the Cougars rallied for seven consecutive points with senior Avonlea Sparling serving combined for four points during the stretch with Sparling landing a pair of aces and Fitch using a light tap and a more powerful spike at the net to help put the Cougars up 14-9 The fourth set featured long rallies and a tie score five times BFA at one point led 16-12 but some miscues down the stretch The Cougars had a scare when Fitch went down with an injury but they managed to pull ahead for good after the score was locked up at 16 all Fitch said she aggravated an old ankle sprain I just wanted to finish out my last game ever playing volleyball on a good a note rather than on an injury.” Sparling said she was worried when Fitch went down “because she’s such a glue to our team,” she said so I had faith that she was going to come back in.” helped pick up the slack while Fitch was sidelined Fitch said the Cougars play with a team mentality “I think when we have such an amazing group of girls you’re playing with each other and we just wanted to win for each other,” she said Fitch led the Cougars with 10 kills and eight digs Setter Emily Bell fueled the offense with 27 assists Lee “is that quiet ninja on our court who just plays the ball up and doesn’t say a word and suddenly you’re like ‘wow that set just happened … I thought they were going to get a kill.’” McKell called Vicenza “a formidable team,” and chalked up her team’s shaky start to nerves “I think we pulled through,” added BFA senior Leah McKell “But I think it just set us a little bit off the rest of the game.” the Vicenza and American Overseas School of Rome girls basketball teams opened the doubleheader that included quite a jolt for both teams A 3.9 magnitude earthquake briefly interrupted play in the third inning of Game 2 as the Wildcats attempted a comeback against the Cougars after a stunning 15-0 defeat in the opener No one was injured and there was no apparent damage at Naval Support Activity Naples’ Carney Park in the 1:32 p.m tremor that rattled street signs and lampposts and briefly stunned players and spectators play resumed with the Cougars holding Naples to five runs in the first inning to win A bit of overconfidence after Game 1 and some errors in the first inning of Game 2 led to the close score who believes the Cougars have a good chance of making it to the final day of the season-ending championships this year Coach Osvaldo Garcia Carrillo attributed the team’s wins to a good slate of returning players That combination along with eager new recruits is helping the Cougars build on the fundamentals needed for a winning season “There’s a long process to to see where it goes from here,” Naples catcher Emily Anderson said “We’re going to improve throughout the season.” Game 1 saw Vicenza take an early lead in the first inning but the Cougars were able to break open the game in the second taking a 12-0 lead after Naples’ pitcher Anna Gose struggled with an aggravated shoulder injury Freshman Savannah Ingram came in to relieve Gose Vicenza scored three more times in the third inning The game was then called due to mercy rule run differential in the fourth The game was a significant learning experience for a team that struggled with fielding and maintaining focus according to Wildcats coach Kennedy Rascoe “Once we get our energy up and we remember that we are out here to have fun we are going to do just fine,” said Rascoe noting this year’s team mostly is comprised of new players Game 1 was “rough,” but the season is early She pointed to a strong performance by Ingram and team solidarity on Saturday as some of the reasons the living in a Disney-like fairy tale this week The Vicenza Cougars hope to put more of a Brothers Grimm spin on it Saturday Marymount advanced to DODEA-Europe Division II boys basketball championship game for the first time in school history by stunning second-ranked Aviano in one semifinal game Friday Aviano 45: Royals senior Patrick Gianni admitted his team will be underdog in the championship game Gianni hadn’t beaten the Saints in three years on the court before Friday’s game But he said that’s not unusual for the program which has not exactly terrified many opponents for years until athletic director Alex Klainos convinced longtime American Overseas School of Rome coach Phil Davis to come out of retirement to coach this season the Royals raced out to a 10-2 lead against the Saints and led 15-7 Aviano took its first lead of the game at 40-39 on a basket from Deon Walker with 7 minutes Walker just had hit three free throws to bring the Saints within one with less than a second left in the third period The Saints managed only one more basket over the next four and a half minutes but that was better than the Royals’ output Gianni’s basket with 3:23 to play were Marymount’s first points of the quarter But that started a run of nine straight that ended up being the difference Nash Stoner’s halfcourt basket that just beat the buzzer were the only points for the Saints in the last six minutes “Turnovers killed us,” Aviano coach Keith Adams said Davis coached at AOSR for 25 years but hadn’t reached the finals since winning the tournament in 2015 that gives him much more experience on the stage than anyone at the school he’s now coaching “I had retired and was OK with that,” Davis said “But then they called me and I’m so glad they did.” Stoner finished with a game-high 25 points for the Saints keeping them in the contest in the first half with 18 points Deon Walker had 10 and twin brother Andrew seven freshman Gael Grant Rios had 14 and junior Lorenzo Tranquilli eight Naples 54: The Wildcats’ outside shooting kept them close for most of the first half Three straight three-point shots cut Vicenza’s lead to 29-26 midway through the second period But Vicenza scored nine straight points and was ahead 38-28 at intermission The only real scare for Vicenza in the second half was when 6-foot-8 center Simon Gilbert limped off the court with 6:38 left in the third But he was back again minutes later after just bumping knees with another player Ben Harlow finished with 27 points to lead Vicenza while Jace Herron scored 23 and Dylan Horrigan 13 known mainly for his outside shooting and layups after turnovers drove into the paint several times against the Wildcats “Our bigs are getting good at setting screens Those bigs – Gilbert and 6-3 Joe Kelly – fouled out within minutes of each other early in the final quarter But Vicenza was up by 19 when Gilbert left with 5:50 to play and the lead never really dipped Jettyn Jones finished with 21 points four seasons And while the victory might have featured the most dramatic ending to any of the 200 wins in Falcons coach Lillian Aldred’s coaching career it was also likely one of the most perplexing Olivieri’s layup after a frantic drive that started at half-court helped the Falcons cap an unbeaten season But it came in a game saw the two teams miss 25 of 34 free throw attempts commit nearly as many turnovers as they had points and featured two Falcons foul out with the game on the line after Aldred called a timeout and told her players to avoid fouling undefeated” as they walked into the locker room A perhaps unlikely hero helped carry the team to the win Leah Renk gained a bigger role after last year’s all-tournament selection Natalia DiMatteo broke her ankle She and Nina Neroni are the only bigs on the team with experience Renk might have had her best game of the season Saturday keeping the Falcons within striking distance after Vicenza zoomed out to a 11-1 lead heading into the second quarter Every time she needed a bit of reassurance Saturday “I could tell she never gave up on me,” Renk said Saturday’s victory was Aldred’s third title in four years in Europe that included an abbreviated event during the coronavirus pandemic Olivieri’s basket came after Vicenza had gained possession briefly after the Cougars leading scorer missed a free throw with 11.2 seconds left that could have put Vicenza on top Smith had been fouled by tournament Most Valuable Player Silvia Goldman while bringing the ball up court becoming the second starter to foul out in less than 30 seconds The Falcons gradually had trimmed into the Cougars’ lead in the final quarter but failed to go ahead despite numerous chances over a 2-minute span where neither team could find the bucket 22 seconds to play with a free throw and Goldman – who finished with 10 points – gave AOSR its first lead 22 seconds later known for their fast-paced play this season went into a slowdown offense to start the second “I was trying to force them to come out of their zone,” Vicenza coach John Kohut said AOSR eventually played man-to-man the rest of the game but the tactic initially gave Vicenza fewer chances to score than it would have otherwise So when the Falcons – mainly Renk – got going Renk had four points and three rebounds in a 20-second span in the third that cut the lead to 17-15 She finished with team highs of 11 points and 14 rebounds “She didn’t have a very good tournament at all the first three days,” Aldred said The Falcons connected on only 5 of 15 free-throw attempts “Four freshman starters and it looked like nerves got to them today,” Kohut said led the Cougars with eight points and Smith had seven Gracie Perry had six points and 11 rebounds Germany – Wiesbaden boys basketball coach David Brown admitted he didn’t know what to expect from his players after two weeks off and just a couple of practices before Vicenza came to town Friday evening The senior shooting guard showed the Warriors were up to the task against one of the top teams in Division II Idowu dropped 14 of his 23 points in the first half to help Wiesbaden jump out early during a 76-58 victory over the Cougars at Wiesbaden High School “He sets the temperature of the team,” Brown said of Idowu The Warriors (6-0) needed a little time to get going trailing Vicenza (4-1) by three midway through the first quarter Wiesbaden finished the frame on a 12-0 run really turned it up a gear in the second quarter Jacob Idowu scored 11 points for more than half his team’s offensive output (20) keeping the Cougars at a double-digit deficit Idowu scored in various ways – backdoor cuts Taking a 36-24 lead into halftime made the team’s slow start seem like a thing of the past “It took us a quarter or two to get in the flow but I feel like when we get into the flow … we just start hitting shots Others stepped up to complement Idowu’s performance Senior small forward Zion Thompson scored a pair of buckets early while freshman guard Carter Edwards chipped in with all six of his points in the first half Brown dug into his bench often to bring on players like Edwards senior guard Jonah Harvey and junior power forward Isaac Mason The Wiesbaden coach said they earned those minutes and their teammate said he’s noticed their efforts Their performances allowed another of Wiesbaden’s big three – Jordan Thibodeaux – time to find his shooting boots The senior point guard popped off for 20 of his game-high 29 points in the second half He seemed to find his rhythm with a shot from beyond the arc right before the break and continued it over the final 16 minutes The point guard had his hand in the offense early despite not scoring as much Thibodeaux had five assists in the first half with three of them coming on Idowu buckets making sure everybody else’s job is easier … I think he really took that to heart and executed that today,” Brown said The Warriors needed Thibodeaux’s offensive output in the second half Trailing by 10 points at the 2:31 mark in the third period Vicenza produced a 9-2 run over 1:03 to make it 47-44 That’s when Thibodeaux scored four straight points to make it a three-possession game again Jace Herron (19 points) and Ben Harlow (18) paced Vicenza “I thought our kids handled the adversity well,” Vicenza coach Jesse Woods said Vicenza 40: While every DODEA coach faced the same problem of having two weeks off for winter break Wiesbaden coach Kristin Kachmar was thrown an added curveball who figured to be an important piece to the offense During Friday’s game against Vicenza at Wiesbaden High School The Warriors did enough to hold off a pesky Cougar squad I think that it takes a minute for everybody to get adjusted and to get back into the swing of things,” Kachmar said “We’ve got some new girls that need to step up in different roles that they’re not used to there were many times where I was frustrated as a coach Two of those sparks happened right before halftime and early in the third period Wiesbaden (3-3) scored the final eight points over a 2:15 span starting with a Katie Shea (10 points) runner and ending with a buzzer beater by Kariyah Housey (12 points) after Vicenza (1-4) tied it a minute into the third with a drive by Jenina Smith the Warriors rattled off a 16-0 run to pull away for good Housey herself sparked that run with the first basket off a Kaitlynn Boman pass Housey had eight points during the quarter “Once we started to hit that click and understanding in the third quarter … it was really good.” Wiesbaden also enjoyed a major advantage on the glass Senior Natalia Bergdorf corralled 17 herself Although Kachmar said she wished the Warriors had made some of the bunnies that led to the high number of offensive rebounds she couldn’t fault the team’s effort crashing the boards that gives you an advantage,” Kachmar said Am I pleased with the fact that’s what happened couldn’t have been happier with the performance The Cougars have nine freshmen on the squad and not a lot of height Kohut challenged his players to turn over Wiesbaden as much as possible and keep the ball away from the hoop The Cougars forced 34 Warrior turnovers with 21 of them coming on steals Smith (game-high 16 points) had eight of them “The key this weekend is go out there and harass the ball she coordinates coverage All rights reserved VICENZA, Italy – Very few football teams are in top form at the beginning of the season. So Naples coach Jim Davis didn’t have too much to be upset with following his team’s 28-6 victory Friday over Vicenza. “This was only our second game,” Davis said. “Normally, teams don’t peak until the sixth or seventh game.” Unfortunately for Naples, Friday’s game also marked the halfway point of the regular season – minus a matchup against a yet-to-be-determined Division I foe a week before the Wildcats presumably attempt to defend their D-II title. After Aviano failed to field a team this fall for the first time in school history, the number of DODEA-Europe 11-man football teams in Italy shrunk to two. Both Naples and Vicenza have already defeated the third – and final – team in the D-II field this season, Rota, in consecutive trips to Spain. So Friday’s contest marked the end of the first round of head-to-head matchups. And while Friday’s game was much closer than Naples’ 40-0 victory a year ago on the same field, the Wildcats still loom as the favorites to retain the title. “It has been a while since we’ve beaten those guys,” Vicenza coach Jesse Woods said, looking at the opposite sideline before the start of the game. His team likely will get two more chances this year if form holds true. Vicenza visits Naples Oct. 18 and the Wildcats might host them again in the championship game. The Cougars kept Friday’s contest close in the first half, despite fumbling the ball five times. Although they controlled the time of possession, it was a series of big Wildcats plays that made the difference. “Not only on the offensive end, but on the defensive end,” Davis said. It only took Naples three plays to score on its first possession. Quarterback Camden Kasparek connected with Gab-riel Doran for a 36-yard pass and two plays later, Micael Daniels went into the end zone from a yard out. Joshua Banks added the first of four PATs. Vicenza countered with burly Andrew Overstreet’s 2-yard run to cut the margin to 7-6. Overstreet, one of the largest players on the field, had several carries in the contest and was part of a Vicenza strategy to try to overpower and wear out the Wildcats with run after run between the tackles. “We wanted to make the Naples defense work a little more,” Woods said. “But in the second half, our guys started to get tired and we missed some blocks.” Naples had taken a 14-6 advantage at the half thanks to another big play: Leshei Morgan’s 30-yard run in the second quarter. Morgan had appeared to be stopped after about a 7-yard gain but did a 360-degree spin to separate himself from his tacklers and then sprinted down the right sideline into the end zone. After Naples missed a field goal to end their first second-half possession, Vicenza mishandled the ball again and this time Naples’ Phoenix GoOco pounced on the ball. Daniels scored on a 3-yard run a few plays later and it was 21-6. The Wildcats finished the scoring when Kasparek connected with Doran on a 38-yard-touchdown. Two more Naples scores were nixed by a penalty on a 51-yard punt return and a fumble at the goal line that Vicenza recovered. But that was more than enough for the Naples defense, which held Vicenza to 43 total yards in the second half. For the game, Naples outgained Vicenza 301 yards to 152. Kasparek threw for 145 yards. Morgan rushed for 80. Naples could wrap up a spot in the championship game next week when it hosts Rota, while Vicenza gets a bye before hosting Stuttgart’s JV squad on Oct. 5. 23 Mar 2025 16:30:00 unruly Herdman kids take over turning it into an unexpectedly meaningful retelling of the Nativity story “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” features a large cast of 38 members and is the perfect must-see play for this holiday season With moments of genuine surprise and laughter the show is a delightful mix of chaos and charm showcasing the cast’s incredible talent and leaving the audience with a sense of joy and holiday spirit urging us to look past outward appearances to recognize the potential for change and meaningful connections in everyone When the Herdman siblings take over the pageant’s leading roles they bring their wild disruptive behavior and outrageous questions to the rehearsals shocking the congregation and challenging everyone’s expectations of what the Christmas pageant should look like hilariously bring their own eccentric interpretations to the first dress rehearsal with Grace Bradley (Angela Wilson) as the Herdman’s inexperience and blunt honesty lead to unexpected moments of humor and heart Grace struggles to keep the rehearsal on track while they ask outrageous questions about the Nativity like why the Wise Men would bring impractical gifts or why no one called child services on Herod It perfectly captures the show’s blend of comedy and heartfelt lessons setting the stage for the transformation that follows As the Herdman’s unconventional take on the pageant unfolds the town learns surprising lessons about compassion preconceived ideas and the true meaning of Christmas The remarkable set features a modular setup that seamlessly transforms between the Bradleys’ household to the church The clever design makes for smooth transitions between scenes and enhances the audience’s immersion with details that make it feel like a real a stage for the Nativity and even cathedral-style glass windows It felt as though we were in the middle of the pageant experiencing the events alongside the characters worn-out clothes capturing their characters and visually setting them apart from the more traditional subtly emphasizing the contrast between them is left alone with the baby Jesus during rehearsal; we see this usually brash and tough child cradles the doll with unexpected tenderness revealing a quiet vulnerability and a glimpse at the wonder she feels in the role The raw emotion is striking as Imogene’s transformation embodies the deeper meaning of the Nativity story It’s a powerful and touching moment that captures the true spirit of Christmas leaving a lasting impression on everyone watching The cast’s standout talent lies in their incredible ability to fully inhabit their characters bringing both depth and humor to the performance Bradley (James Grady) are a hilarious dynamic duo interacting with wit and timing As they try to manage the chaos of the pageant Bradley’s sarcastic commentary create a chemistry that keeps the audience in stitches A majority of the cast are immensely talented young kids and teens The explosive Gladys brings an infectious comic energy to the stage especially when she delivers lines with perfect comedic timing and exaggerated drama with her poised delivery and mature presence stands out for carrying the narration of the show with professionalism beyond her years this play shows us that growth and transformation can come from the most unexpected places We see how unlikely characters are capable of learning empathy and understanding and that giving others a chance can have a profound impact It underscores the importance of compassion and the realization that the true meaning of Christmas goes beyond tradition and outward appearances Sometimes people who seem difficult are the very ones who can show us the deepest truths about kindness and community Email first column shows archival sources; the second column shows past analytical campaigns; the third column shows the location of all points where photographs and samples of pictorial materials were taken on the 3A front during the current research project The image highlights comparison with the new process of analytical survey methods through the use of HBIM The HBIM model also allowed for the inclusion of other investigations carried out in previous campaigns such as structural diagnostics in the sub-scene spaces; endoscopic investigations in the walls and sub-scene; magnetometric and thermographic investigations in the proscenium and the ceiling over the cavea and the Odeum highlighting the fact that the theatre's internal microclimatic parameters had never previously been monitored These investigations commenced recently in order to gather data on the fluctuations in internal temperature and relative humidity as well as to establish possible correlations between these factors and the development of deterioration phenomena or pathologies on surfaces or structures In addition to microclimatic investigations acoustic monitoring was carried out to verify the response to acoustic stresses of the interior spaces of the Theatre It is currently being determined whether the structural alterations made during the second half of the twentieth century may have impacted the acoustic and microclimatic behaviour of the interiors of the Theatre the flats have been virtually dismantled to pinpoint previous survey locations and to highlight comparison with the new process of analytical survey methods using HBIM The samples were investigated using a multi-analytical approach to define their stratigraphy accurately and identify their composition in terms of binders and pigments A polished cross-section was prepared for each sample by embedding it in epoxy resin Polishing was performed dry and/or using petroleum as a fluidifying agent to avoid any hydrosoluble material (e.g. certain analyses were conducted directly on the materials as they were The analytical methods adopted are summarised below Reflected light optical microscopy was adopted on polished cross-sections to investigate describe and measure the microstratigraphy of the layers and identify their various components (pigments This study also used ultraviolet light (UV) observation to estimate the fluorescence induced by any organic substances use was made of a Leica DM2500 optical microscope equipped with a mercury vapour lamp and a set of filters suitable for visualising the fluorescence emission response (green emission: excitation filter BP 450–490 nm emission filter LP 515 nm; blue emission: BP 320–380 nm Mineralogical analyses were performed by X-ray powder diffraction on fine-grained powder samples (obtained with an agate mortar and pestle) using a Panalytical Empyrean diffractometer in Bragg–Brentano reflection geometry and equipped with CuKα radiation and an X’Celerator detector Qualitative diffraction data analysis was carried out with X'Pert HighScore Plus® software (PANalytical) and the PDF-2 database The reference intensity ratio (RIR) method rather than only the intensity of the peak channel was used to semi-quantify the amount of the recognised materials in the multiphase XRPD patterns on single layers or several together as long as they could be separated manually with the support of the stereomicroscope and scalpel textural and elemental compositional investigations were carried out using a ZEISS EVO15 scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with a LaB6 cathode coupled with an X Flash 6160 BRUKER energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) system A series of analyses was performed on each recognised layer to characterise the different materials and measure the thickness of the layer where possible Elemental maps were also generated to enhance comprehension of the samples’ multilayer structure Micro-Raman spectroscopy was performed with a DXR2 Thermo Scientific™ Raman microscope equipped with two frequency-stabilised single-mode diode depolarised lasers at 785 nm and 532 nm Spectra were acquired on the cross-sections using laser power varying between 1 and 30 mW for the 785 nm laser and between 1 and 10 mW for the 532 nm laser Spectrograph aperture of 25 μm pinhole and 10X and 50X objectives were also adopted therefore with a spectral resolution in the range 2.7–4.2 cm−1 and a spatial resolution of 2.1 μm a series of pinpoint analyses was performed on recognised layers and coloured particles to characterise the different materials and pigments where possible The identification of the organic compound was performed using a Thermo Scientific™ Nicolet™ iN10 MX Infrared Imaging Microscope for pinpoint analysis of both the cross-sections and the untreated samples a small amount of powder sampled from every layer identified by stereomicroscope was taken using a needle then deposited and pressed on a standard KBr pellet for each micro-fragment The analyses were performed in transmittance mode with the minimum spectral resolution equal to 1 cm−1 and 60 consecutive scans fingerprint peaks were mapped on cross-sections using germanium crystal micro-tip ATR with 0.35 mm Ø for tapping-mode investigation of the component distribution in the microstratigraphy The shots were processed using the commercial software Agisoft Metashape Pro The photogrammetric model was oriented on the same reference system previously used for processing the topographic and laser scanning survey The decision to use the same reference system was made for two main reasons: (i) the previous survey was already available to the research team so it was not necessary to perform a new topographic survey; (ii) the use of a shared reference system opens up the possibility of including the results of the photogrammetric survey within the HBIM environment it became feasible to link the photogrammetric point cloud to the pre-existing information model Cross sections in reflected-light photomicrographs of samples TOV_02 and TOV_17 (a d); elemental EDS maps in false colours of samples TOV_02 Reflected-light (f) and UV green emission (g) photomicrographs of sample TOV_04 compared with μFTIR map (h) of the characteristic peak of acrylic polymers (ν C = O In order to describe the microstratigraphy more efficiently, the layers identified were named alphabetically starting from the deepest layer (i.e., layer A) to the top (i.e., layer C for a sequence of 3 layers) (Table 2) The use of HBIM and the introduction of all prior investigations into its archival system prevented unnecessary repetition of characterizations and enabled assessments to be based on these findings as regards the condition of finishes and supports relies on outcomes from earlier investigations as revealed by archival research Backscattered SEM–EDS images of a microcrystalline silica deposits on wood sample TOV_13; b and c two areas of sample TOV_17 showing different calcium sulphate micro-textures at least three types of ground layers have been recognised: which belongs to the second type of preparation described above This indicates that this third type belongs to an earlier intervention The use of calcium carbonate as the principal inorganic binding agent only in these two samples leads to the assumption that retouching and/or restoration work was limited to a few flats Two exceptional cases in terms of the composition of the ground layers are identified in samples TOV_05 and TOV_06 which appear macroscopically to be fillings executed at a later date The two impastos revealed a carbonate composition characterised by abundant traces of acrylic polymers as indicated by μFTIR analysis that TOV_05 and TOV_06 do not show a true pictorial microstratigraphy: the former shows a gypsum basal layer (layer A) surmounted by a sort of thick calcium carbonate-based plastering (layer B) The second sample (TOV_06) also presents a grey-yellow which is unusually filled with wood splinters The presence of chromium oxide in layer A of sample TOV_06 also places it historically in a period certainly later than the early 1800s Table 3 summarises the most significant data from the multi-analytical study performed on the identified pigments observed in the stratigraphy of the samples. Specifications for each pigment are reported in this section. Reflected-light photomicrographs of a cross-section of the sample (a, b); backscattered SEM–EDS images of the same samples (c, d) Raman spectra of the most significant pigments Two different green pigments have been identified in the paint layer (and sometimes as occasional particles in other layers) The coexistence of hematite and clay minerals enables the pigment to be defined as red ochre The mixture of clay minerals with iron hydroxides and oxides allows this pigment to be defined as yellow ochre The white pigments identified are by far the most numerous after the second half of the nineteenth century) μRaman investigation detected diagnostic peaks at 1099 which identifies the mineral dolomite [CaMg(CO3)2] The XRPD analysis of sample TOV_06 confirmed this attribution only in layer TOV_09/E can its use be attributed as a pigment the white pigments are titanium white (titanium oxide TiO2) and barium white or bianco fisso (barium sulphate The complexity of the case study is also reflected in the definition of the original binders from green (layer B) to orange (layer F) for sample TOV_04 and from red (layer B) to green/grey (layer G/H) for sample TOV_09 TOV_11 and TOV_15 present a very simple and unique microstratigraphy compared to the others They show a white sulphate preparation layer from the inside to the outside with a few dispersed red and yellow ochre particles on top of the wooden support Laid directly on this is a very thin layer (layer C) containing the usual titanium white and coarser particles of barium white dispersed in a binder of an acrylic nature Through a targeted analysis of front 3A of flat 3, querying an element within the HBIM model yields the information detailed in Table 4 making it possible to compare the state of conservation of the surfaces Isometric view of the 3A front of Scamozzi’s scenery for the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza The upper part of the figure shows Flat 3A broken down into its architectural components; the lower part shows the location of samples taken from three different points on the flat the analyses to which each was subjected and the conclusions drawn with respect to the stratification of the paint and ground layers can thus generate an infinite number of search possibilities Through the selection of a single object (a portion of a wooden flat etc.) it is possible to obtain detailed information concerning it This makes it possible to systematize historical data and results from laboratory analyses starting from the overall view of the architectural element being interrogated (scene portion) and arriving at the single sample taken The three-dimensional model data visualisation thus offers an agile synthesis between the overall vision of the selected architectural object backed by studies typically conducted on it by art historians that characterises the typical contributions of applied mineralogists and petrographers chemists and restorers working in heritage science multiscale view is one of the innovative results of using HBIM as a tool for investigation and design in the restoration of material and tangible cultural heritage The methodological approach adopted for research on the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza proved the potential of an interdisciplinary study to enhance and maintain a site of significant cultural and historical interest the diagnostic enabled significant observations to be made on the materials and technologies used for the painting of the wooden scenery identifying the materials applied and distinguishing the original ones from those related to modern restorations of the panels an important advance evidenced here for the first time The investigations confirmed complex and varied sequences regarding the microstratigraphic sequence and painting technology indicating that the wooden perspective flats had undergone numerous retouching and restoration interventions The laboratory data revealed a rather basic pigment palette especially concerning the hypothetically older layers (i.e. Indigo is the only exception to this uniformity The pervasive presence of acrylic polymers as well as the ubiquitous use of titanium oxide and barium sulphate The use of a Heritage Building Information Modelling (HBIM) system facilitated the digitization of all the acquired documents and data related to the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza and contributed significantly to identifying and guiding the selection of sampling points through meticulous evaluation of historical information The analyses performed acquire a peculiar importance by cataloguing all the research carried out for a timely analysis of the historical relevance of the traces of original and modern paint that can guide the conservation process in the operational choices related to them the model enables a programme to be developed detailing new insights and investigations to be carried out to increase the level of knowledge By keeping the model updated with the restoration work carried out it will be possible to monitor the response of the materials to interventions on the wooden scenery as a function of the microclimatic indoor conditions of the Teatro Olimpico to set up monitoring programmes and to plan scheduled conservation An added value of the methodology described is the high potential for sharing which will avoid future data dispersion (as is the case of the unpublished data on the repainted sections of the scenery) as all those involved in the restoration process will be able to update the information in the digital model as studies and interventions continue the HBIM system allows consolidation of all the acquired building data into a unified digital model facilitating the creation of connections and correlations between the information collected The datasets generated and/or analysed during the current study are not publicly available due to the co-ownership of the data with the Italian Ministry of Culture but are available from the corresponding author on reasonable request Monumental Archive of the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the provinces of Verona 84 «1944—Disassembly of scenes;
