The Catholic Church’s cardinals are meeting next week at the Vatican to elect the new pope in a centuries-old process called conclave
but the longest-ever in history was nearly three years long

Italy (AP) — It was the mounting rage of citizens in Viterbo
that put an end to the longest papal election in the history of the Catholic Church
forging for the first time the word “conclave.”
Viterbo is also considered the birthplace of modern conclaves
where cardinals are confined to a single place until they elect a new pontiff
and often need to negotiate before reaching a compromise on the final name
the cardinals — summoned in Viterbo to elect the successor of the late Pope Clement IV — were split mainly between two factions and couldn’t reach a consensus before September 1271
As the cardinals continued to deliberate in Viterbo
frustration rose among locals due to the lack of progress
as political and internal struggles had cast a shadow over the election
Those divisions stemmed from the cardinals’ allegiance to competing parties
mainly supporters of the papacy and the Holy Roman Empire
That was further complicated by personal and family ties
making any agreement on the pope’s election extremely difficult
The electing marathon led citizens ,who at the time had to pay for the cardinals’ room and board expenses
“The cardinals left us a very important testimony
where they said to be locked inside a palazzo discoperto
a palace with no roof,” said Elena Cangiano
an archaeologist at Viterbo’s medieval Palazzo dei Papi (Palace of the Popes)
the cardinals ended up camping inside the unroofed palace
“That’s reportedly testified by some holes found on the hall’s floor
which could be those left by the tents’ poles,” she explained
Then Viterbese also restricted the cardinals’ meals to bread and water to make them hurry up
they started tearing off part of the roof of the large room that hosted the college of cardinals
Those extreme conditions only lasted three weeks
following which the cardinals were allowed access to the other rooms of the palace
It would take another 15 months before Gregory X was chosen as the new pope
That was the longest papal election ever: To avoid the same situation ever occurring again
Gregory X promulgated a new apostolic constitution — called “Ubi Periculum” — that imposed strict regulations on the election and allowed to isolate the cardinals
Gregory’s election was also seen as a “compromise,” with his name chosen to unite the divided college of cardinals and bring an end to the exhausting process
Gregorio X decreed that cardinals were restricted to “one meal per day,” and later
considers the city’s primacy a matter of pride
”This is the history of our city,” he said
we care a lot about our medieval neighborhood
we care about the pope palace that is truly wonderful and
was struck by the history of the Viterbo conclave after a tour of the papal palace
I did not know that first conclave started here
Vatican history experts stress that modern conclaves still owe to Viterbo some of their key characteristics
“Let’s say that the timing is now almost certainly respected
also thanks to all that happened in Viterbo,” said Cangiano
it doesn’t take that long to elect the pope.”

White smoke is seen billowing out from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel and announcing that a new pope has been elected on Wednesday
One of the cells in which a Cardinal will live during the Conclave
derived from historical studies including Miles Pattenden’s “Electing the Pope in Early Modern Italy
1450–1700,” and interviews with experts including Elena Cangiano
an archaeologist at Viterbo’s Palazzo dei Papi (Palace of the Popes)
it took almost three years — 1,006 days to be exact — to choose Pope Clement IV’s successor
making it the longest conclave in the Catholic Church’s history
It’s also where the term conclave comes from — “under lock and key,” because the cardinals who were meeting in Viterbo
took so long the town’s frustrated citizens locked them in the room
The secret vote that elected Pope Gregory X lasted from November 1268 to September 1271
It was the first example of a papal election by “compromise,” after a long struggle between supporters of two main geopolitical medieval factions — those faithful to the papacy and those supporting the Holy Roman Empire
Gregory X was elected only after Viterbo residents tore the roof off the building where the prelates were staying and restricted their meals to bread and water to pressure them to come to a conclusion
Gregory X decreed in 1274 that cardinals would only get “one meal a day” if the conclave stretched beyond three days
with some taking place outside the Vatican walls
Four were held in the Pauline Chapel of the papal residence at the Quirinale Palace
Santa Maria Sopra Minerva or other places in Rome
On 15 occasions they took place outside Rome and the Vatican altogether
referred to by historians as the Western Schism
there were rival claimants to the title of pope
The schism produced multiple papal contenders
splitting the Catholic Church for nearly 40 years
The most prominent antipopes during the Western Schism were Clement VII
The schism was ultimately resolved by the Council of Constance in 1417
The cloistered nature of the conclave posed another challenge for cardinals: staying healthy
Before the Domus Santa Marta guest house was built in 1996
cardinal electors slept on cots in rooms connected to the Sistine Chapel
Conclaves in the 16th and 17th centuries were described as “disgusting” and “badly smelling,” with concern about disease outbreaks
“The cardinals simply had to have a more regular and comfortable way of living because they were old men
many of them with quite advanced disease,” Pattenden wrote
The enclosed space and lack of ventilation further aggravated these issues
Some of the electors left the conclave sick
but concerns about political interference soared during the longest conclave in Viterbo
Gregory X decreed that cardinal electors should be locked in seclusion
The purpose was to create a totally secluded environment where the cardinals could focus on their task
without any political interference or distractions
various popes have modified and reinforced the rules surrounding the conclave
Pope John XII was just 18 when he was elected in 955
The oldest popes were Pope Celestine III (elected in 1191) and Celestine V (elected in 1294) who were both nearly 85
Benedict XVI was 78 when he was elected in 2005

‘DEI does not have a religious component,’ education expert says
Viterbo University in Wisconsin cited its Catholic identity to affirm its commitment to “diversity
and inclusion” despite President Donald Trump’s recent order targeting DEI
Two higher education experts told The College Fix that the school’s commitment to DEI conflicts with federal law and promotes divisive ideologies
the President of Viterbo University sent a campuswide email forwarded to The Fix
“Viterbo will continue to be a place where diverse backgrounds
and experiences are welcomed and respected.”
“New directives continue to raise concerns about diversity
Viterbo University’s mission is not dictated by political shifts,” President Trietley stated
“Our Catholic Identity and mission calls us to uphold the dignity of every individual
and cultivate a sense of belonging … This commitment is not about any single program or policy; it reflects who we are as a Catholic
He quoted Pope Francis and Pope John Paul II in his support of these policies
‘God calls on Christians to reject anything that discriminates or excludes and discards people,'” he stated
Trietley sent another email telling the student body the Trump administration’s immigration policies are causing “uncertainty for students and employees.”
He instructed students to “contact Campus Safety & Security” if they “are approached by an outside law enforcement official seeking access to facilities or student records.”
he stated the “university does not track the immigration status of students.”
The university’s DEI webpage states that it offers “programming and support for education and understanding while providing opportunities for student diversity
Senior fellow Jonathan Butcher at the Heritage Foundation
told The College Fix via email that “DEI does not have a religious component.”
the core idea driving DEI is rooted in critical race theory
which is opposed to traditional theories that emphasize reason and individual worth
including racial preferences in college admissions
adding that “…it advocates for equal outcomes regardless of our choices or decisions.”
DEI requires the government to alter the scales of justice so that some receive more than they have earned while others receive less
It is “discriminatory by definition,” Butcher told The Fix
along with Viterbo University’s Office for Communications and the vice president and coordinator for DEI
did not respond to repeated requests from The Fix over the past month for comment on potential policy changes in response to Trump’s executive actions or on how the university intends to align its stated values with federal law
Manhattan Institute fellow Renu Mukherjee told The Fix via email that because the school receives federal funding
The Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling in Students for Fair Admissions made clear that treating students differently based on their race or ethnicity is prohibited
Further, one of Trump’s recent executive orders aims to eliminate all DEI practices across the federal government
“Guidance released by the Department of Justice and Department of Education also enforce this ruling and the principles of colorblindness and equal opportunity expressed therein,” Mukherjee said
She said it is possible for President Trietley to continue to foster a welcoming
and supportive environment in line with the Catholic identity and mission while complying with the law
“If Viterbo’s DEI programs discriminate on the basis of race or ethnicity in any way
propagate the notion in any way that racial minorities
seek to equalize outcomes among various groups in any way
then all that clearly sows division,” Mukherjee said
She said efforts like these and the ideologies that support them
as opposed to bringing students together in shared understanding.”
Last year, the school introduced a new scholarship exclusively for female students pursuing medical school, The College Fix previously reported
Additionally, in 2022, the communications department at Viterbo told employees to use the phrase “all” genders in place of “both” genders

The documentation operations related to the preventive archaeological investigations conducted in Piazza del Plebiscito
An intervention planned as part of the redevelopment works of the paving of the square
which has returned results of great historical and scientific relevance
In parallel with the final stages of the survey
operations are also underway to cover the emerged evidence
so that the area can be handed over to Sector VI - Public Works and Maintenance of the City of Viterbo as early as Monday
April 14.What emerged in the archaeological site goes far beyond expectations
returning a stratified and complex picture of urban life in one of the most significant areas of Viterbo’s historic center
the discoveries include numerous evidences that are intertwined with the deep history of the city: from medieval burials to wall structures that predate the current layout of the square
to pipelines that testify to the continuous reorganization of urban space over the centuries
One of the most impactful finds is the one related to the cemetery of the church of Sant’Angelo in Spatha
a reality hitherto known only through documentary sources and never investigated in the field
Archaeologists have identified as many as 45 depositions
To these were added five graves referable to children
in some cases finished with a tile covering and roofing
in addition to being part of the customs of the time
offers valuable information on the funerary practices in use in the town community of the time
masonry of particular interest has emerged
suggesting a different urban layout prior to the current arrangement of the square
probably referable to rooms or buildings not yet fully identified
testify to a long and articulated history of occupation of the area
which is confirmed as a crucial junction in the urban morphology of Viterbo
The layout of the masonry offers insights into a better understanding of the transformations undergone by this space over the centuries
returning hitherto unpublished elements to historical and archaeological research
No less significant are the stretches of pipelines that were found during the investigations
attests to the continuous stratification and functional adaptation of this portion of the city
hydraulic infrastructures often survive architectural and urban reorganizations
constituting an eloquent trace of the daily life and practical needs of the urban community over time
In view of thetechnical impossibility of leaving archaeological evidence in view - also so as not to compromise the continuation of public works - detailed and technologically advanced documentation was undertaken
In addition to the usual photographic shots
a laser scanner survey of the entire area affected by the excavation was carried out
This methodology makes it possible to acquire data on each structure with very high precision
ensuring a virtual and permanent reconstruction of the evidence
will not be lost in the memory of research
Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the province of Viterbo and southern Etruria
has expressed its desire to return to the citizenry what emerged during the excavation
The intention is to elaborate a multimedia narrative that can be the prerogative of everyone
offering a fascinating and unprecedented cross-section of Viterbo’s history
it is planned - upon completion of the study of the materials found
particularly bone remains and ceramics - to organize a public exhibition
This event will provide an important opportunity to raise public awareness of the wealth of heritage hidden under the city’s streets and the value of preventive archaeological research
will thus continue to be a living space of the city
digitally preserved and ready to be shared
