The Victorian summer lights up with Cinema in the Park, the open-air film festival starting on Thursday 15 June 2023 in Ceneda on the Papadopoli Park platform. This year’s programme, intended especially for families, offers titles of great interest. The event is organised in cooperation between the Municipality of Vittorio Veneto, the Pro Loco of Revine Lago and Piattaforma Lago – a network of cultural projects.
The organisation of Cinema al Parco is supported by the Vittorio Veneto Library, the Municipal Summer Centres and the associations Ceneda Insieme, Le Mamme di Ceneda, (Ri)Datti Una Mossa and Comitato Festeggiamenti di Santa Augusta.
“The administration,” Uliana concludes, “wants to make Cinema in the Park and Papadopoli Park a symbolic event and place of activities for families, children and people of all ages, enhancing the magic of a place that, due to its natural setting, can be enjoyed both during the day and in the evening”.
The programme runs over five consecutive Thursdays, at 9 p.m. The films are mainly products for children, but are also suitable for an adult audience, due to the themes dealt with and the important productions. Admission costs EUR 3.
The selection aimed at adults and children (with a special screening for children on 29 June) includes great classics, restored gems, and the successes of recent years, also thanks to the collaboration with the Cineteca di Bologna.
The theme of space will accompany spectators for two evenings, who, thanks to “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” and “WALL-E”, will find themselves looking at the sky with a different gaze – a theme in collaboration with the Municipal Summer Centres.
In the event of bad weather, the screening will take place at the Civic Library.

The InterContinental on Via Veneto opened to rave reviews a few years’ back
to its striking location in a grand Renaissance Revival palazzo—also the former American Embassy Library

You don’t get much more iconic than this location in the heart of Via Veneto—the perfect setting for an established luxury hotel like the InterContinental
which straddles the line between the more ornate five-star spots of yesteryear and the more modern lifestyle hotels
The vibe here is definitely old-school sophisticated
thanks to a pared-back interior design that manages to keep the buildings sweeping staircase and grand marble lobby looking clean and fresh
there’s no attitude here—as can sometimes be the case in more trad hotels
Guests in tees and trainers are treated the same as the couple in fur coats
Located in the heart of Rome on the legendary Via Veneto
the property was originally built in 1900 to host ambassadors staying in Rome
before serving as the American Embassy Library in 1946
All 160 rooms and suites are comfortable but uncluttered
with soft leather headboards and fluffy sheets (quilts are hypoallergenic

plus a Nespresso coffee machine and a kettle with a good selection of tea

2025 — A shocking accident occurred in central Turin when a tourist bus veered off Piazza Vittorio Veneto bridge and plunged into the Po River
Authorities have confirmed that there were no passengers on board at the time of the incident
Eyewitnesses reported seeing the grey bus break through the barriers of the bridge and fall several metres into the shallow waters of the river below
Initial reports suggest he was alone in the vehicle and may have lost control of the bus while maneuvering along the bridge
An autopsy has been ordered to determine if a medical episode contributed to the crash
Local police and transportation authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident
Possibilities being examined include brake failure
driver fatigue or a sudden health emergency
Video surveillance from the area and the onboard black box may provide further insights in the coming days
the vehicle had passed routine safety inspections and was not carrying tourists at the time due to scheduled maintenance later that morning
Turin mayor Stefano Lo Russo expressed condolences to the family of the driver and thanked emergency services for their rapid response
“We are devastated by this tragic accident
Our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones
The city will fully support the investigation and ensure all safety measures are reviewed,” he said
located at the foot of the Gran Madre di Dio church
The bridge connects Piazza Vittorio Veneto — a major social and tourist hub — with the riverside neighbourhood of Borgo Po
Traffic along the route has been temporarily diverted
and the area remains cordoned off as authorities work to recover the vehicle and assess structural damage to the bridge
City officials have promised a full review of safety protocols for tourist transport services operating in central Turin
transport unions have called for a moment of silence in honour of the deceased driver

WOOSTER — Considered a war hero in a small Italian village
one Wooster veteran is being remembered at home and in Italy on the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I
a local Italian-American heritage organization
will lay flowers at the Wooster grave of First Lt
during the Battle of Vittorio Veneto in Italy
The bomber pilot was killed when his plane was shot down in the final days of World War I
a WWI aviation historical researcher who lives in Vittorio Veneto
emailed the Daily Record last month seeking someone in Wooster to place flowers on Bahl’s Wooster grave while he organized a minute of silence for Bahl and his crew on the day of his death
Vittorio Veneto is in the northern Italian village near the Austrian border
Amici Italiani offered to fulfill Marinello’s request to put flowers on his grave
he “gave the ultimate sacrifice for Italy,” said Amici Italiani board member Harry Tomassetti
“Our organization is based on the Italian heritage of Wayne County
he is deserving of our acknowledgment here,” Tomassetti said
He grew up on West Larwill Street and attended school in Wooster before going to college in Indiana
He was working in Cleveland as a private secretary for Samuel Mather of Pickands Mather & Co
when he was called into service with the machine gun company of the Fifth Regiment of the Ohio National Guard
He later became part of the 332nd Infantry Regiment
Army that was part of the 83rd Infantry Division
The regiment formed in August 1917 at Camp Sherman
They departed for Europe in June 1918 and arrived in Italy via England and France a month later
Bahl was a pilot in a four-man crew that also included first pilot Lt
Coleman Dewitt of New Jersey and their Italian crewmen
They were conducting a daytime bombing mission of an Austrian munitions plant on Oct
was attacked and shot down by five Austrian fighters
Austrian soldiers robbed the bodies of the crew and refused to allow the four bodies to be buried
Norman Sweetser described how seven old men from Vittorio hiked 4½ miles across the mountains to retrieve the bodies and brought them back to the village
“The graves were beautifully decorated with flowers placed there by people of the surrounding country who wished to pay tribute to the men who paid the supreme sacrifice for their liberation from enemy occupation,” Sweetser wrote
Bahl’s father accepted a Medal of Valor on behalf of his son from a representative of the king of Italy at New York City Hall in February 1919
and his flag-draped coffin was escorted by more than 100 uniformed veterans of Wayne County from Wooster United Methodist Church to the Wooster Cemetery
Marinello helped to dedicate a room at the Museum of the Battle in the Italian village dedicated to Bahl and his unit
his group organized an event about the 332nd Infantry Regiment and created a website called Faces in the Book
which can be found at www.facesinthebook.it
filled with stories and photos of the regiment
Marinello writes that he hopes the website acts “as a bridge between our city and the American states
in which we do not hide the hope of finding the descendants of the soldiers listed here and maybe even be able to weave new relationships
documents and photos” for both the website and the museum exhibit
The Italian historian is also preparing for some conferences to present his work on the 332nd Infantry Regiment and their service to Italy and hopes someday to visit Wooster and do a presentation

ROME (AP) — Italian leaders on Thursday marked Liberation Day
which celebrates the end of the country's Fascist dictatorship during World War II
with appeals against glorifying dictator Benito Mussolini
The celebrations come a day after a group of hardcore fans of the Lazio soccer club performed fascist salutes and hung a banner that read "Honor to Benito Mussolini" before a match in Milan
the Milan square where Mussolini's body was hung upside down along with that his mistress and other fascists after they were executed in 1945
Tens of thousands of people joined marches in Rome and Milan commemorating Italy's liberation from fascism 74 years ago
President Sergio Mattarella visited the memorial to the Unknown Soldier in Rome after making an appeal against re-writing history
He then headed to Vittorio Veneto in northern Italy
an area where Italian partisans fought Nazi-Fascist troops during the war
He hailed Italy's return to "freedom and democracy after 20 years of dictatorship
"History teaches that when people barter their freedom in exchange for promises of order and protection
events always take a tragic and destructive turn," Mattarella said
Premier Giuseppe Conte visited the Ardeatine Caves
the site in Rome's outskirts where 335 people were massacred in 1944 by occupying German forces
Deputy Premier Luigi Di Maio visited Rome's main synagogue and said that more work must be done to fight racism and anti-Semitism in light of events like the banner praising Mussolini
The Italian soccer league's governing body vowed to do "everything in our power" to wipe out racism in the sport
Lazio's Italian Cup semifinal victory at AC Milan was overshadowed by racist abuse directed at Milan players who are black
Allied troops freed Italy from the Nazi occupation and Mussolini's rule

Palazzo Todesco confirms its vocation as a container for photographic exhibitions by hosting in its halls the Ameriguns exhibition dedicated to Gabriele Galimberti
a Tuscan author of international prominence in the field of photojournalism and documentary photography
he has exhibited worldwide and worked over the years for international magazines and newspapers such as National Geographic
the world’s most prestigious photojournalism competition
This project chronicles the American passion for firearms through iconic images in which quiet or smiling citizens pose with their private collections in ordinary living rooms
These portraits are hyperrealist in tone because of their environmental contextualization and careful attention to the arrangement of objects that create an effect of texture and pattern
The result is alienating compared to classic journalistic-type photography
the perfection of framing and the fixity of the image sublimate the drama of culture from guns
which cuts across the different strata of society in the United States
through the aesthetic perfection of a studied composition
A stylistic formula that has become recognizable and highly personal signature
His research is not limited to identifying themes and subjects but wants to go to the understanding of the general phenomenon because photography has the power to reveal the truth with the power of visual data
Also on display at Palazzo Todesco is Toy Stories
a series of images that take on the characteristics of a short collective novel made up of stories of children framed within intimate spaces of life
often a refuge from the incomprehensible reality of adults
This photographic project led Galimberti to visit
more than fifty countries around the world
recording the same spontaneous and natural joy of children in showing off their toys
Whether it is a real fleet of cars or a simple stuffed monkey
dinosaurs or miniature toy soldiers these photographs capture the same pride
self-conscious or disarming in showing off their treasure
of children who yet live in very different socio-economic realities
The In Her Kitchen project also uses the same modes of communication
The photographer makes a fascinating journey around the world by entering the intimacy of the home
but this time he combines the portraits with shots of the kitchens and typical dishes that are prepared in those environments
he emphasizes the contrast between the quantity and quality of medicines found in the homes of those who live in megacities or in villages
thus emphasizing the same anxiety and fear that humans feel when faced with pain and death
An exhibition that also includes other sections of a multimedia nature and proves to be a compelling social and anthropological exploration to discover the peculiarities and differences
Gabriele Galimberti describes a world with complex dynamics
characterized by deep injustices and irremediable diversities but also by common problems
shared emotions and feelings that make all human beings similar
Gabriele Galimberti is an Italian photographer who often lives on airplanes
and occasionally in Val di Chiana(Tuscany)
In recent years he has been working on long-term photo documentary projects
Galimberti’s work consists of telling the stories of people from around the world through portraits and narratives of their peculiarities and differences

Wilfred Wood earned the Victoria Cross for his actions in the First World War
He may have seen action on a lesser known front
in what is a lesser known engagement to Americans
but his story is definitely worth remembering
due to his incredible bravery and the difference he made in the Battle of Vittorio Veneto
Wilfred Wood was born in Hazel Grove, Greater Manchester, England, on February 2, 1897. With the country at war, he enlisted in the British Army, serving as a private with the 10th Battalion
Northumberland Fusiliers on the Italian Front in 1918
only at higher altitudes and during colder winters
The American-manufactured weapon was perfected by the British and used heavily during the First World War
It had a distinctive barrel cooling shroud and a top-mounted pan magazine
and it was a highly-effective infantry weapon
Wood received the Victoria Cross for his actions on October 28
The battle had been raging for four days and featured fierce Italian attacks – supported by the Allied forces – trying to drive the Austro-Hungarian forces from Italian territory and end the war itself
Near Casa Van, Italy, a unit on Wood’s right flank was held up by hostile machine gun fire and deadly-accurate sniper fire. The private acted of his own accord and worked his way forward with his Lewis gun in hand. He sprayed the machine gun nest with bullets and forced 140 opponents to surrender
The Allied advance continued until the soldiers encountered a hidden machine gun nest
Despite the fire coming from point-blank range
Wood charged while firing his own gun from his hip
where another three enemy officers and 160 men surrendered
Wilfred Wood returned to his job as a railway worker
then supervisor with the London and North Western Railway (LNWR)

One of the largest and newest cruise ships in the world has crashed into the pier in Palermo
The MSC mega-ship which was only recently christened in early November 2019 has crashed into the pier in Palermo
No injuries have been reported including passengers and crew onboard the vessel
As the giant 181,000 gross ton vessel was maneuvering to dock at the Port of Palermo on the island of Sicily in Italy at around 8:30 AM on Monday when she hit the Vittorio Veneto pier
Due to high winds at the time the ship hit the corner of the pier on her stern port side
MSC Grandiosa seems to just have some scratches but as the area is located near the waterline there is no doubt further inspections were needed to make sure she was seaworthy
The majority of the damage looks to be the corner of the pier with some huge chunks now missing
The MSC cruise ship finally departed the port as scheduled at around 5:00 PM which means there shouldn’t be any delay or impact to the current voyage
Malta on Tuesday with the arrival of around 9:00 AM
The new cruise ship is currently on a 7-day Mediterranean cruise which departed Civitavecchia
She is a Meraviglia Plus class vessel and one of the largest in the world
MSC Grandiosa has a maximum guest capacity of 6,334 along with 1,704 crew members
She was delivered to MSC Cruises on October 31
MSC Cruises has previously had some similar accidents including two MSC ships crashing in the port Port of Buenos Aires in February 2019
the MSC Armonia crashed into the pier in at the port of Isla Roatan

PA – After closing their pizza shop doors at 1803 Markley Street in Norristown in 2013
after six years in a shopping center off Rt
the longtime Montgomery County favorite will be opening a second location
Via Veneto Pizza and Italian Ice has been a staple in Montgomery County
from a little town called Castellamarre del Golfo
have been making pizza and water ice in Norristown since the early 1970s
“The name was already on the pizza shop when we bought it in 1973
Via Vittorio Veneto is the name of one of the most famous streets in Rome
“back in the day,” many of the Italian immigrants in Norristown
“knew what they were getting,” when they went into Via Veneto; which
has been the Stabile family cooking up quality food from the old country
and everybody feels like they belong in the same place.”
“Everybody knows them for their water ice.”
Via Veneto’s Italian Ice is now sold across the country
That’s the way we started with a small little machine.” They still use the original machine from 1976 to make and test new flavors at their production facility in an industrial park in East Norriton
Owners say they regularly produce eight gallons of Italian ice a minute
They routinely fill upwards of 1,300 2.5 gallon buckets of water ice on a production day
The Stabile family says they now wholesale their product to almost every state in the country
In 2016, Hershey’s tapped Via Veneto to make their Juice Rush Cups
“It’s served to a lot of the schools in the country.”
These days the older guys run the Italian ice business in west Norriton
and the younger guys handle the pizza business at their 6-year old location in East Norriton
they plan to build a brand new pizza shop at the same site they made pies and Italian ice since 1973 on Markley Street in Norristown
Via Veneto's Pizza and Italian Ice, which I grew up on, has announced they'll be opening a 2nd location in 2020! They'll build a brand new building at the original site on Markley Street in Norristown. They now make and fill about 1,300 2.5 gallon bins of water ice A DAY…@phl17 pic.twitter.com/vs6GKpZuKr

BERGAMO, Italy (CNS) — Accompanied by Bishop Francesco Beschi of Bergamo and escorted by both Italian and Vatican police officers, the glass coffin containing the body of St. John XXIII left the Vatican early May 24 for a 370-mile drive to Bergamo
The route taken for the trip north was kept secret for security reasons
When the procession reached Bergamo’s central Vittorio Veneto Square, Bishop Beschi told thousands of people gathered there that it was “with great joy and emotion that I accompanied to our diocese
the urn with the mortal remains — now relics — of John XXIII
which return for a few days to the land of his birth.”
St. John, who opened the Second Vatican Council
After his ordination as a priest and years of service in the Vatican diplomatic corps
he was appointed patriarch of Venice in 1953
The pilgrimage with his remains was meant to mark the 60th anniversary of his election and the 55th anniversary of his death
Maria Calagari was in the square with her sister and some friends to welcome St
“We are fortunate because we saw him when he was pope
we saw him die and we just saw him now — 55 years later as a saint here in Bergamo,” she said
In connection with the pilgrimage of St. John’s relics, Pope Francis gave an interview to L’Eco di Bergamo, the area’s main daily newspaper, which is owned by the Diocese of Bergamo.
In the interview, Pope Francis described St. John as “a saint who did not know the word ‘enemy,'” but “always sought what would unite people.”
For St. John, he said, “the church is called to serve human beings, not just Catholics, and to defend always and everywhere the rights of the human person and not just of the Catholic Church.”
Pope Francis said the pilgrimage was meant to be “a gift and an occasion” to renew one’s faith and to remember the great pope. It is a special opportunity for the elderly, the sick and the poor, who have not been able to go to St. Peter’s Basilica to pray at his tomb.
The visit to the Diocese of Bergamo included a stop at the city’s prison, where 180 prisoners — including 35 Muslims — asked permission to enter the internal courtyard where a truck carrying the remains was to stop.
The prison yard was the first place in Bergamo where people were allowed to touch the glass coffin. The prisoners were given a square of either yellow or white fabric to touch to the glass; most of them touched the glass with their hands, then used the fabric to wipe the glass clean.
Vincenza, one of the inmates, told the local television station that it was amazing to have the saintly pope’s remains stop in the prison at the beginning of the pilgrimage “because usually, especially for important events, prisoners are the last ones people think about.”
From the prison, the relics were to be driven to the diocesan seminary named after Pope John XXIII. The priests of the diocese were to escort the remains to the cathedral later in the day.
Teens and young adults of the diocese planned a prayer vigil in the cathedral May 25, and the remains were also to be present the next morning as new priests were ordained for the diocese.
After a Mass with the poor May 27, the body was to be moved to the hospital named after the late pope, then transferred to the Shrine of St. John XXIII in Sotto il Monte.
Pilgrims can pray before the saint’s remains at the shrine until June 10, when Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican secretary of state, will celebrate Mass and the body will be returned to the Vatican.
Cardinal Angelo Comastri, archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica, told Vatican Media that “this is the first time — it’s never happened before — that the remains of a pope make a return visit to his home, to his roots.”
Contributing to this story was Cindy Wooden at the Vatican.

Such is the sentiment of a famous aphorism that aptly describes the photo of a Scottish piper traversing the streets of Veneto during the First World War
at least not for us Venetians with a passion for the Scottish Bagpipes
But let’s start by telling the story from the beginning
the Veneto Piping School participates in the commemoration ceremonies of Remembrance Sunday at the British cemeteries of Giavera del Montello and Tezze di Vazzola
and at the war memorial in Maserada sul Piave in the province of Treviso
It’s precisely at this last location that an informative totem catches our attention
the recently installed totem also features a photo of a Pipe Band from the First World War
It’s obligatory to have our band’s photo (above) with this historic backdrop
But then a question arises among us: “Is it really a photo of a Scottish pipe band from the First World War taken in Veneto
Or is it a photo taken elsewhere on the European front and symbolically placed on the totem?”
start researching online and sending emails to the municipalities involved in the commemorations
to the historical museum Museo Storico della Grande Guerra in Maserada sul Piave
and to the Museo della Battaglia di Vittorio Veneto
The response from the museum in Maserada doesn’t take long to arrive
Besides Scottish soldiers’ battalions in Veneto during the Great War
The discovery fills us with enthusiasm; the photo in question was indeed taken in the area of Vittorio Veneto (Treviso) in December 1917 when British allies came to aid the Italian army engaged at the front from the Asiago plateau to the Piave River after the defeat of Caporetto
it’s a photo of a bagpipe and drum band of the Gordon Highlanders
the famous infantry regiment of the then 7th Division of the British Army
and we manage to discover other photos: a stereoscopic photo of the same regiment and the same band with a detailed caption reading “Italo-Austrian War
Allied troops on our front – Castelfranco Veneto – December 1917 – A company of Scotsmen in their characteristic costume” (Fig.2)
Finally, a video of British soldiers detrain from a train at Fontaniva station (Padova) followed by a clip focusing on pipers marching and playing. https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/1060008198
These three small photos above and the video are preserved by the Imperial War Museum in London and available as viewable material in the museum’s online archive
Thanks to these research efforts and to the discovery of historical photographic and video material
we find out that there were three Scottish battalions in Italy during the First World War: the 6th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders
two divisions were on the front line on the Piave
while the others were in reserve behind them
namely the area between Vicenza and Legnago
which constituted the concentration zone of the British contingent (Fig.7)
Between the end of December 1917 and January 1918
they began to move towards the plateau and the Piave to enter into action at the front
two divisions (the 5th with the Argyll & Sutherland and the King’s Own Scottish Borderers
alternating on the plateau first and then on the Piave
It was truly incredible to find all this historical material and discover tangible evidence that the places surrounding us were so closely involved in the dramatic events of the past wars; our thoughts naturally go to those who lost their lives
Perhaps among the rediscovered photos are also those of the two MacLeod soldiers whom the Veneto Piping School commemorates every year with a dedicated ceremony at the British cemeteries of Barenthal (Asiago) and Montecchio Precalcino (Vicenza)
the faces of many young people have remained imprinted
we cannot know… But one thing we do know: in the worrying and sad reality of war
a piper found the strength to give a moment of lightheartedness to children and bring a smile by doing the only thing he could do for them at that moment: playing the bagpipe
We don’t know the name of that piper
but his act of kindness surely left a lasting impression
first on the children who listened to him then and also on us
more than a hundred years later from that December 1917
we can still admire his gesture captured in the photo
“I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay… small acts of kindness and love.”
And it’s precisely this example and spirit that the Veneto Piping School wants to bring and tries to convey to the audience during its performances
a heartfelt thank you to the Piper in the photo for still being an inspiration today

Quando scoppia la pace (When peace erupts)
Vittorio Veneto becomes an experimental laboratory for artistic dialogue between the countries that participated in World War 1
Athens (EMST) supports the national representation of Greece by Bill Balaskas in Italy’s World War I centenary exhibition “Quando scoppia la pace” (“When peace erupts”)
This new permanent exhibition is hosted from Sunday 4 November 2018 by the city of Vittorio Veneto – the location of the last battle of the Great War (1914-1918)
“Quando scoppia la pace” is curated by Dimitri Ozerkov
curator of contemporary art at the Hermitage State Museum
A true “call to arts” is what brought in Italy 13 international artists selected by Dimitri Ozerkov
in order to reflect on peace at a place that is the symbol of the conclusion of WWI
Serbia and Croatia are countries of the nations once again gathering in Vittorio Veneto
13 artworks specifically designed for 13 different locations in the historic districts of Vittorio Veneto
which from 4th November – the day on which the War officially ended – will define the first edition of an event that will be for Vittorio Veneto
a “Centennale”: an artistic itinerary that is both temporal and spatial
as former war locations will transform into places to celebrate peace every 100 years
Balaskas presents the first part of a new dual neon installation
The work’s two parts are reproductions of the right-eye and left-eye apertures of a military mask that the artist discovered in Vittorio Veneto’s Battle Museum (Museo della Battaglia)
and its particular design was chosen in order to protect the soldiers’ eyes from snow and the low temperatures on the mountains
“Apertures” has been conceived by Balaskas as a work that shall co-exist in two different locations: Vittorio Veneto for one of the two “eyes”; and at a second location in Austria
which will be announced in the coming months
the work will have a physical presence on both sides of the Alps and
a complete “view” of the War era and what it means today can only materialise by ultimately bringing those two parts “together”
above and beyond the mountains – a poignant allegory for the current state of Europe and the collective lessons to be learnt from World War I
Balaskas’s work is exhibited at the entrance of the Battle Museum of Vittorio Veneto
theorist and academic based in Nottingham and London
His works have been exhibited internationally
he was invited to represent Greece in Italy’s permanent World War I centenary exhibition
while in 2012 he represented the United Kingdom in the London Cultural Olympiad and in Maribor
Brussels; EMST National Museum of Contemporary Art
Vitoria-Gasteiz; Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center
Rotterdam; Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts
New York; Thessaloniki Biennale; Musée des Abattoirs
Recent lecture-performances and talks include Tate Liverpool; University of Oxford; Sharjah Biennial; Goldsmiths University
Ghent; and the Victoria & Albert Museum
Balaskas has received awards from the European Investment Bank Institute; Comité International d’Histoire de l’Art; European Cultural Foundation; Open Society Institute; and the Association of Art Historians
he is an editor for the Leonardo Electronic Almanac (The MIT Press)
while his writings have also appeared in edited books and in publications such as the Journal of Visual Culture
he holds a PhD in Critical Writing in Art & Design and an MA in Communication Art & Design from the Royal College of Art
Bill Balaskas is an Associate Professor and Research Coordinator at Nottingham Trent University

(ANS - Rome) - Costantino Vendrame was born in San Martino di Colle Umberto
in the diocese of Vittorio Veneto (Treviso) on 27 August 1893
His parents Pietro and Elena Fiori taught him to love work and sacrifice and above all the Lord
Constantino distinguished himself by his intelligence and his goodness
He completed his high school studies in the seminary of Vittorio Veneto and in 1913 he put into practice his dream of becoming a Salesian and entered the novitiate of Ivrea
After a first experience in the oratory of Chioggia
participating in the First World War (1915-18) with other Salesian confreres who
emerged from this harsh experience further tempered in body and spirit
he received the missionary crucifix in Valdocco in October
in the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians
a mountainous area to the north-east of India
He had the task of approaching the area's inhabitants and in less than a year he was appointed parish priest of the city
reaching the "outskirts" via rough and tiring mountain paths
meeting families and children without distinction of ethnicity and religion
starting Salesian oratories to make Jesus and his Gospel known was his mission
one he lived by giving himself wholly for the glory of God and the salvation of souls until the very end of his life on January 30
Near legendary not only the number of conversions and baptisms he administered
but also the fruit of his extraordinary mission that still continues to inspire amazement
love for the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary Help of Christians the inspiration of all his works
Both his native city and the Diocese of Vittorio Veneto cultivate a great devotion to their fellow countryman and promote the Cause of his Beatification that also involves the young and keeps alive the missionary zeal and the commitment to announce today the Gospel that so distinguished Fr Costantino
