all the way to Capitol Hill Elwood, 16, was among three young Civil Air Patrol leaders representing Wisconsin during National Legislative Day in Washington, D.C., advocating directly to lawmakers about the critical role this organization plays in communities and youth development.  Civil Air Patrol serves as the civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force fostering youth leadership and advancing aerospace education With around 400 cadets across Wisconsin alone from emergency response to shaping future leaders.  “Civil Air Patrol has helped me overcome my fear of public speaking and leading small groups,” Elwood told WPR “It has really advanced those skills for me and for other cadets in that aspect.” Youth interested in learning about Civil Air Patrol can visit a local squadron The following interview was edited for brevity and clarity.   Shereen Siewert: What inspired you to join Civil Air Patrol in the first place?  Hayden Elwood: Civil Air Patrol originally drew me in with their aviation program I’ve always had a spark for aviation and Civil Air Patrol has allowed me to expand that spark It’s given me the opportunity to meet new people and expand my personal knowledge about public speaking and aviation SS: Tell me what it meant to you to be selected as one of the cadets traveling to Washington Then I felt a rush of amazement at such a great opportunity I was in a group of two cadets and two senior members We interviewed each representative for about an hour to talk about what Civil Air Patrol is and how important it is to the communities of our state We met with seven representatives in all.  SS: What stood out as the most surprising thing to you?  but going and talking with people who are so high up in the U.S SS: What are some of the key messages that you shared with lawmakers?  HE: We talked about how important this organization is and helped legislators understand the impact of Civil Air Patrol It’s not just national emergency response but also youth leadership and development The biggest benefit for people involved in it is coming out of your shell It’s a place where you can meet and talk to new people and make new SS: Tell me a bit about the overall experience HE: On a daily basis you can study leadership and aerospace We have certain events every year where cadets from all over the country come together for an encampment where younger cadets are taught by older cadets SS: I know Civil Air Patrol has a strong focus on aerospace Have you participated in any search and rescue training or aviation programs?  HE: I have vast experience in the aerospace programs where senior members or pilots take cadets up in the air and have them fly the aircraft so they can learn about aviation I took my first Young Eagle’s flight and the first time I went up in the air I looked at the ground and it was incredible to me SS: What do you love most about flying?  It’s beautiful looking up at the clouds It’s a totally different view up there.  SS: What has been the most challenging part of being a cadet?  getting up and talking to a large or small group of people and telling them what to do.  SS: How did you get over your fear of that?  There was a time when one of our senior members randomly called me up to speak in front of the room Stuff like that helped me get better at public speaking and getting over the fear of talking in front of people SS: What does the future look like for you?  HE: I want to join the Air Force and then become an airline pilot after that I am currently obtaining my private pilot’s license right now First you need to be 17 and then there’s a multitude of tests that you need to take practical tests to make sure you’re proficient in the skills of flying the aircraft and have general knowledge of aviation SS: How has being a part of Civil Air Patrol influenced your future plans?  HE: It has greatly amplified by plans and my love for aviation I’m in an environment where I’m surrounded by other pilots with a lot of opportunities for experience in aviation emergency services and leadership That really can prepare young people for the future The main aspect is having these people around you who support you and build you up You’re in an environment where people support each other and build them up You love what you’re doing and the people around you love the same thing also the executive officer for the Stevens Point the lieutenant phase and finally the colonel phase The airman and sergeant phase are kind of leaning phases while the lieutenant and colonel phase are leaders The Panthers had a sophomore and three freshmen among their top players in the state finals. One of those underclassmen, freshmen guard Drew Steals, scored a team-high 17 points off the bench. Sophomore Adam Ikamba had 16 points and 13 rebounds, and Kane added 10 points. Steals’ role increased after junior Caiden Battles suffered a first-quarter injury. Iuzzolino said this was by far Steals’ best game of the season. “How many freshmen come into a state championship game and do what Drew Steals did today?” Iuzzolino said. “He was amazing. He played like a senior.” Sewickley Academy (26-3) was trying to win its fourth state title after victories in 1997, 2010 and ‘17. Iuzzolino said for now he was leaving Hershey “disappointed in the loss,” not looking forward at the program’s bright future. But it’s undeniable that the Panthers’ youth make them a title threat beyond this season. “They’re going to be back here the next three years,” predicted Sewickley Academy senior Nolan Donnelly. “And they’re taking gold next year.” District 3 runner-up Linville Hill (24-5) was making its first appearance in the state finals. Stephen Smucker scored a game-high 22 points for the Warriors. Giovanni Sejuste added 12 points and Drew Tibbins had 10. With 6-8 teammates Kane and Ikamba on the court together, Sewickley Academy had a significant advantage over Linville Hill, which started nobody taller than 6-2. But that edge in height ultimately wasn’t enough to overcome an undersized opponent that didn’t seem intimidated. Linville Hill made sharp cuts into the paint and showed a knack for finishing around the basket. “I’m going to be honest. I was surprised by their aggression,” Donnelly said. “To come out and step up right in our face and act like they were supposed to be there, I’ll give them credit for that.” Sewickley Academy held an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter but was outscored 15-6 over the final six minutes. A layup by Kane with 34 seconds left gave the Panthers a 54-53 lead, but Smucker answered with a go-ahead runner for Linville Hill at the 23-second mark. Kane was called for a carry on Sewickley Academy’s next possession, a turnover that seemed less costly once Linville Hill’s Derian Petersheim missed two foul shots with 10 seconds left. The missed free throws set up Sewickley Academy for the game’s final shot. “We knew they were going to have to throw a lob,” Linville Hill coach Mike Schatzmann said. “That was the only chance they had. We tried to pack that middle, but let me tell you, it almost worked for them.” Linville Hill led 13-9 after one quarter and 28-27 at halftime. The teams were tied at 40 after three. Sewickley Academy scored the last basket of the third quarter and opened the fourth with eight consecutive points. A layup by Donnelly capped the run and gave the Panthers a 48-40 lead with 6:29 left. Linville Hill answered with an 11-2 run to retake the lead. “Our team should use this as a learning opportunity,” Steals said. “I’m sad that our senior Nolan didn’t get the win. But we have a lot of younger players on our team.” Sewickley Academy’s size makes it easy at times to overlook their youthfulness. The team’s 17-player roster included eight freshmen and two sophomores. “On my nightstand I have a little piece of paper from when I first took this job that says: ‘Don’t forget they’re 14- and 15-year-old kids,’” Iuzzolino said. “I remind myself of that all the time.” If Javascript is disabled browser, to place orders please visit the page where our photos are available to purchase Hill Valley Dairy, which took over the Clock Shadow Creamery space in Walker's Point in December is bringing a new artisan cheese and cocktail bar to the building It will be similar to Hill Valley's cheese bar in Lake Geneva That spot has cheese and wine pairings like the Red The Milwaukee concept will expand on the Lake Geneva menu with similar wine pairings while adding a new craft cocktail component Each drink on the cocktail menu can be served with a unique cheese plate pairing "We're looking to get a pulse on the city and bring something unique and different," she said We wanted to come up with cocktails for the cheeses we make." Noah Lyles is reaching its breaking point Read more: Dolphins Superstar Tyreek Hill Believes He Can Beat Noah Lyles in a Race Hill has doubled down on his comments regarding beating Lyles in a foot race The 30-year-old said he was ready to race Lyles after Lyles called him out A post shared by instagram This talk was sparked almost a week ago when media personality Kay Adams visited the Dolphins training camp and sat down with Hill The topic of Lyles' "world champions" comments and his most recent Olympic performance was at the focal point Hill wasn't shy to tell the public how he really felt about Lyles and how he could beat him in a race "Noah Lyles can't say nothing after what just happened to him," said Hill He wants to come out and pretend like he's sick for him to do that and say that we're not world champions of our sport A couple of days after making these comments Hill is ready to put his money where his mouth is He is ready to race Lyles in a 50-yard race and now we'll wait and see if and when Lyles responds Hill is among the fastest players in the NFL as he can clock a speed of up to 22.01 mph Although the All-Pro wide receiver is a fast man Olympic-type track speed is a different animal Lyles reached a top speed of 27.09 mph for his 9.79-second run which won him the gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games and the lowest he's gone is Hill's top speed on the football field A lot of it has to do with the gear that Hill wears on the football field then maybe he could stand a chance or make it a competitive race and now all eyes will be on whether Lyles will accept the challenge or respectfully decline Lyles has been public enemy No.1 for many basketball and football fans so it'll be interesting to see if he'll lean towards that role in this potential London In July it was announced that London could get 30 new Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) over the next few years The next location to get one in the capital is Greenwich and Blackheath – the south east London location will be getting new part-time traffic restrictions from the end of November Here’s everything you need to know about the new Greenwich LTN.  A part-time LTN will be enforced at rush hour in Greenwich and Blackheath from November 27. North-south through traffic will be barred from streets east and west of Greenwich Park between 7-10am and 3-7pm on weekdays Traffic will remain the same at other hours.  Most boroughs in London have some sort of traffic restrictions in place with 81 low traffic zones covering 70 percent of eligible roads with only four percent of roads affected by LTNs.  Other areas with Low Traffic Neighbourhoods include Camden ‘LTNs help to make streets around London easier to walk and cycle on by stopping cars vans and other vehicles from using quiet roads as shortcuts.’ LTNs block traffic from entering certain roads with bollards If you live in an LTN you will still be able to access the road by car but it will have to be via a different route You’ll still be able to access your home on foot or bicycle.  LTN sceptics, look away: here are London’s healthiest streets Get the latest and greatest from the Big Smoke – from news and reviews to events and trends. To develop a uniquely personal sound, he stopped working as a sideman and even refused to listen to other people’s music. With Point of Departure, recorded in March 1963, he showed that his self-imposed musical solitude was paying dividends. While the public wasn’t yet fully aware of Hill’s accomplishments – his Blue Note debut album, Black Fire wasn’t issued until April 1963 – many Big Apple jazz musicians were already in awe of him which is probably why the pianist could assemble such a star-studded sextet for Point of Departure Listen to Andrew Hill’s Point of Departure now. He brought in rising saxophone star Joe Henderson – adept at playing both hard bop and progressive jazz – alongside Eric Dolphy who juggled alto sax with bass clarinet and flute Hill also hired a more conservative player a 39-year-old trumpet virtuoso with hard-bop affiliations Rounding off the group were two forward-looking musicians who two months earlier had contributed to Dolphy’s yet-to-be-released classic Out To Lunch!: Bassist Richard Davis and a drummer almost half his age who had been playing with Miles Davis since 1963 Hill’s decision to blend youth with experience was inspired allowing the session to reach forward while being tethered blustery piece that sets Point of Departure’s distinctive post-bop tone the album’s five tracks showcased Hill’s deeply chromatic style with its asymmetrical phrasing and emphasis on fractured rhythms With its Thelonious Monk-like angular horn motifs and jaunty swing groove “New Monastery” was easily the album’s most accessible cut But perhaps the most affecting track was the album’s closer mournful elegy with hauntingly beautiful solos “I wanted something that would fit a death march,” the pianist revealed in the liner notes adding that the group’s performance deeply affected Dorham Andrew Hill’s music was notoriously tricky to play – some of his Blue Note sessions were shelved because he was unhappy with how the music came out – but with Point of Departure the album stands tall today as the Chicago pianist’s greatest achievement — The Oregon State Police (OSP) Central Point office will be temporarily relocated to Gold Hill at 426 6th Ave The temporary relocation is due to a renovation and update project at the current Central Point facility The office phone number will remain the same at 541-776-6114 and *OSP to reach dispatch on mobile devices For any questions, please call the office at the number above or email Ask.OSP@osp.oregon.gov every state has both a highest and lowest point and one What and Why RI reader recently wrote in asking who named the hill after his brother Jerimoth Brown Ranked against the highest peak in every state You can hike Jerimoth Hill. It’s a 0.3 mile out-and-back trail off Route 101 at pole 212. It's less than a mile from the Connecticut border But the AllTrails reviews “Anti climatic,” “not much to see,” and “quick little trail” are among the recent reviews The hikers who are most interested in it tend to be “peak baggers,” the name for people who are on a mission to summit the highest peak in all 50 states The short hike takes you to a small clearing in the woods. There’s no view to speak of – this is no Mount Washington, New England’s highest peak – but there is a United States Geological Survey marker On the edge: How did Rhode Island get its border? It's a story with hundreds of years of bickering  Fun fact: Up until the 1940s it was believed that Durfee Hill in Glocester was the highest point in the state but when the government released new surveys it turned out Durfee Hill was just a little shy of the title While some states have points that dip well below sea level, such as Death Valley in California, the lowest point in Rhode Island is sea level Rhode Island has about 400 miles of coastline giving plenty of opportunities to stand at the so-called lowest point of the state What and Why RI is a weekly feature by The Providence Journal to explore our readers' curiosity. Federal Hill and other neighborhood associations said they had asked for a meeting with BGE officials for weeks They wanted to have a place and time where they could ask all the questions they felt the company had dodged about gas regulators the utility wants to put on the outside of people’s homes BGE had set up stations around the room at St Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church so people could talk one on one rather than addressing the utility representatives publicly as a group That moment set the tone for the contentious two-hour meeting “We were expecting to be able to sit down and ask all of you at the same time so that we could get the answers and hear each other,” said Magdalena Fitzsimmons who lives in the Washington Hill neighborhood The Baltimore Banner thanks its sponsors. Become one. The gas company is replacing aging “low-pressure gas infrastructure” throughout Fells Point with a new system that it says will provide “more reliable and resilient service to residents,” according to a spokesperson for BGE The change requires the gas regulator to be installed outside a home to “reduce pressure from the service line” for safe distribution into the property it could increase the risk of gas intrusion into the home whereas outdoor regulators vent directly outdoors The company said it is following recommendations set up by the National Transportation Safety Board but did not provide the report when asked BGE also did not answer The Baltimore Banner’s questions about how the gas company has determined that external gas regulators are safer which are already not compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 would be even less accessible to people in wheelchairs The neighborhoods are also high-pedestrian traffic areas “We’re not asking them to do anything that they’re not already doing,” Claudia Towles adding that Bolton Hill residents have internal regulators in their homes “We’re just asking them to do it on a scale of a neighborhood to provide equity to all residents.” BGE says the internal regulators mentioned by residents were installed before the company changed its practices in 2021 saying they knew of homes that were granted an exception last year “Alternative methods will be explored if specific locations lack the required space for an outdoor regulator due to building codes or regulations,” according to a BGE statement distributed after the meeting community residents were frustrated by what they said was a lack of communication and transparency since January when they learned the gas company would start work in Fells Point They called BGE’s conduct “extraordinarily frustrating” and “insulting,” a textbook example of “what not to do in public relations.” Explanations from the BGE community engagement and outreach team didn’t satisfy residents The company also could not provide data that shows which is safer saying he was not answering their questions “Can you quantify the difference in the safety of those two installations?” a resident asked “Who is liable if someone in a scooter hits the regulator and gets hurt?” “Why is it [internal regulators are] safe in Bolton Hill but not here?” “Safety is not an absolute,” Nelson started so that works on your argument but not ours?” a resident interrupted Community residents also said it was not clear who they should contact if they had questions particularly when residents were told the company was going to cut their gas off if they don’t let the contractor in “That is bullying to threaten to shut off.” A spokesperson said in a statement that the gas company does not want to discontinue service but it is allowed to do so under the terms of the company’s gas service tariff They stressed the company’s desired approach is to avoid service interruptions If there is a difference in the safety of external regulators there needs to be a tradeoff that makes up for the fact that anyone would have access to the device outside — which could result in accidents and injuries A promotional poster BGE set up at the meeting suggested bringing attention to the regulator by painting it pink painting a flamingo on the wall where it is located or putting a flower pot or bench in front of it Residents said these were not solutions that would address the safety concerns of the community might want to spell it correctly,” Stern said referring to the poster that read “aestetic.” While aesthetics are part of the residents’ concerns especially when they live in historic districts and are expected to maintain their houses in a certain way people at the meeting were overwhelmingly more worried about safety a resident told BGE they did not want to speak with the community outreach and engagement team but with officials who can make decisions “Can you pull that off?” the resident asked “Can you pull off a meeting where we can meet with people who actually have the authority to respond to what we’re saying?” chief of staff to the chief customer officer at BGE said the gas company shares residents’ concerns on safety “I do not want you to think that BGE is a company that is focused on profit I understand that it may be funny,” she said when her statement caused laughter throughout the room But we are going to do what we can do to share with our leadership what’s been conveyed tonight.” clara.longo@thebaltimorebanner.com Clara Longo de Freitas clara.longo@thebaltimorebanner.com Clara Longo de Freitas is a neighborhood reporter covering East Baltimore communities she interned at The Baltimore Sun as an emerging news and community reporter She also has design and illustration experience with several news organizations Welcome to The Banner's subscriber-only commenting community. An overhead shot of Dresden Generating Station in Morris. (Photo provided by Constellation ) “I do all this to prove a point,” Hill, who has visited the Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear power plant sites, said toward the end of the video. “And that point is this: The world looks different when you understand it, and nuclear power and waste, when you understand it, looks less dangerous and more promising than ever.” In an interview with the Morris Herald-News, Hill said the Dresden video – aptly titled, “I Kissed Nuclear Waste to Prove a Point” – was filmed during a visit in July after extensive background checks and clearances. The White House’s Office of Nuclear Energy had to sign off on the visit. Officials from Constellation Energy, which operates Dresden Station, also put Hill through a battery of tests. “Obviously, you cant just waltz into a working power plant,” Hill said. “Getting inside Dresden involved background checks, many Zoom calls and many months of planning. Once I was there, we were scanned for radiation, our footage was screened and armed guards followed us at all times.” Paul Dempsey, a spokesman with Constellation, said company representatives took note of Hill’s volume of work. “We researched Kyle’s video archive and were impressed with his fact-based approach to teaching viewers about a topic,” Dempsey said. “He addresses misconceptions head-on and has a great way of teaching about a topic without getting too caught up in complicated language.” The YouTube video explained some of the various features within the Dresden site, including pools of water within the facility, where nuclear power is piled, that reportedly is cleaner than drinking water. Hill also walks among the 16-foot-tall dry cask storage towers that are able to withstand missile strikes. Nuclear power, which, like wind and solar, is carbon-free, is an important source of everyday life, despite what advocates deem as having many misconceptions among the general public. Today, nuclear power is linked to about 20% of the electricity powering the U.S. Hill said he hopes viewers of his creations ponder deeper questions about their overall environment. “Here’s a powerful question: Where is all the waste that a nuclear power plant produces? It’s on-site, either in pools or nearly indestructible casks,” Hill said. “[Constellation] likes to say that they can account for every neutron. Now ask yourself the same question of fossil fuels. Where is the pollution that your local coal plant produces?” While epic nuclear disasters of the past, such as Chernobyl and Fukushima, resonate most, Hill in his latest video notes they are an anomaly. For his part, Dempsey said he hopes viewers see Dresden Station “as just another place of business” that employs an array of “seasoned professionals.” “The attention to detail and strict governance by procedure is very important to Constellation,” Dempsey said. “Every task starts with a pre-job brief hat includes a safety component. A job can be stopped if any issue arises that needs further discussion.” Copyright © 2023 Shaw Local News Network
