Home » Japan Commissions Sixth Mogami-Class Frigate ‘Agano’ 「あがの」
Named AGANO (with pennant number FFM-6), the vessel is the 6th Mogami-class frigate
a next-generation frigate for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF)
AGANO will be deployed to the Maizuru Naval Base of the JMSDF
The vessel is named after the Agano River (あがの
阿賀野川 Agano-gawa) a river in the Hokuriku region of Honshu
It is also called the Aga River or the Ōkawa River in Fukushima
All ships of the class are named after famous rivers in Japan
Agano was launched by MHI in Nagasaki in December 2022
The FFM (also known as 30FFM and previously known as 30DX) is the next generation multi-mission frigate designed for the JMSDF
A total number of 22 Frigates are expected to be procured for the JMSDF
the FFM multi-mission frigate will have a full load displacement of about 5,500 tons
with a length of 132.5 meters and a beam of 16.3 meters
It will have a maximum speed in excess of 30 knots
indicating a high level of automation on board
The FFM will be equipped with a wide variety of weapons and systems as listed below
The JMSDF had originally planned to build a total of 22 Mogami-class frigates as Tokyo ramps up efforts to strengthen the country’s naval forces
it has decided to now procure a total of only 12 such frigates until the fiscal year 2023
with plans to acquire a new class of 12 FFMs from 2024 until 2028
The new frigates will essentially be improved Mogami-class ships that are set to be built to the design proposed by MHI
As previously reported by Naval News
the new-class FFM will be fitted with longer-range missiles
and improved capabilities for various maritime operations
improved version of the Type 12 SSM and the new ship-to-air guided missile (or simply A-SAM) will be equipped with the new-class FFM
With better anti-aircraft and search capabilities
the new FFM may become closer to an FFG (missile frigate)
Australia Lists Mogami Class as 1 of 4 Contenders for Its Next Frigate
As part of strengthening the Royal Australian Navy’s surface combat fleet capability, Australia listed the Mogami-class frigate of the JMSDF as one of the four candidates for the navy’s next frigate
with the other three vessels being Germany’s Meko A-200
South Korea’s Daegu class FFX Batch II and III
In response, Admiral Sakai Ryo, chief of staff of the JMSDF, praised this move.
“We believe that Australia has picked frigates from these countries based on its own information
The fact that the Mogami class was selected as a candidate is a sign of the high level of trust and evaluation of Japanese equipment,” Sakai said at a press conference on 6 March
adding “the JMSDF intends to actively exchange opinions with the Royal Australian Navy.”

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries held a christening and launching ceremony for JS Agano at the company’s Nagasaki Shipyard
The sixth 3,900-ton Mogami-class multi-role frigate will begin fitting out and is expected to be handed over to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force by the end of 2023
in accordance with Japanese naval traditions
is named after a natural feature of Japan: the Agano river
The river flows through Fukushima and Niigata prefectures and empties into the Sea of Japan
The last Agano served in the Imperial Japanese navy during the Second World War
participating in the Battles of Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands
the names Noshiro and Yahagi were also present
names again used by the Mogami class today
The Mogami class multi-role vessels were designed with the intention of providing a replacement for the Asagiri and Abukuma class surface combatants
heavy automation has allowed the class to only require a crew of 90 to operate the vessel
a more than half reduction from previous designs
Heavy computerization also enabled Mitsubishi to provide an “Advanced Integrated CIC” onboard for greater situational awareness
Two more hulls will be delivered next year for the fulfillment of the initial contract laid down in 2018
and two more have since been added to the order in FY2021
The two additional hulls will be constructed with Mk41 VLS systems already integrated instead of the fitted-for-but-not-with configuration of the current fleet

Home » Japan’s MHI Launches ‘Agano’ 「あがの」Sixth FFM Mogami-Class Frigate for JMSDF
The launch of this sixth unit follows the commissioning last week of the 3rd ship-in-class, JS Noshiro FFM-3 「のしろ」 with the JMSDF
#防衛装備庁 pic.twitter.com/1ipk2Wgkdz
The shipyard will now proceed to the fitting out stage of the frigate
ahead of its delivery and commissioning set for the end of 2023/early 2024
The two shipyards in charge of building the first two frigates of the class are Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) in Nagasaki and Mitsui E&S in Okayama
the FFM multi-mission frigate has a full load displacement of about 5,500 tons
It has a maximum speed in excess of 30 knots
The FFM will be equipped with a wide variety of weapons and systems as listed below:
Initially, the Mogami-class was only “fitted for but not with” (FFBNW) Mk. 41 vertical launch system (VLS). This changed at the end of 2021: According to our Japan-based contributor, Yoshihiro Inaba
the Japanese Ministry of Defense announced the supplementary budget for FY2021
which included a budget for two VLSs sets for FFM ships
Two FFM frigates will get 16 cells each (allowing for a total of 32 quad-parcked ESSM each)
The total supplementary budget is about $6.8 billion
of which about $74 million is for the purchase of the VLS shipsets
the FFM 9 and 10 specified in the defense budget request for FY2022 included a budget for VLS
Therefore the VLS specified in this supplemental budget is for installation on any of the FFM ships 1 through 8

Along the Agano river, deep within Niigata Prefecture are several small villages
Each one supposedly participates in maintaining a long religious folk tradition
found dating back to the late Edo period involving deities named Shoki-sama
each village fashions it’s own life-sized deity out of straw giving special attention to its (male) genitalia
And what was the significance of the phallus involved
With a brisk chill still in the air from a lingering winter
I headed out with a certain Dr T to explore these remote areas of the Japanese countryside and investigate further
Going off a clue from a very ratty looking book Dr T had procured
we set out in our rental car aiming for the old road
“It shouldn’t be too far from central Niigata.” Dr T advised me as we came off the motorway.” But I am just a little concerned that our shrine will be buried in a mound of snow
Dr T got me to catch the first train from Tokyo on a Saturday morning to go and dig out a shrine lost somewhere in the vast countryside of Niigata
I keep my thoughts to myself and take a sip of my morning Blendy coffee
There’s a lot of snow-covered shrines out there.” I sulk
Dr T is the affectionate nickname for the idiosyncratic Dr Stephen Turnbull
he’s a specialist in Japanese military history and eastern religion
I had the pleasure of sitting in on his incredibly popular course “Samurai and the Sacred” back in my university days
It’s no exaggeration to say he’s a modern-day Indiana Jones
It wasn’t long before we were nearing our destination
Most other cars had vanished from the road and convenience stores proved surprisingly difficult to find
Lining the narrow road were several prominent flags
a sharp red in contrast to the winter landscape around us
There was no mistaking this was the place to be today
we wandered to the small wayside shrine hidden in a cluster of trees
Inside were three men huddled around a kerosene fire drinking sake and eating rice crackers
They paid us no attention as we stood in front of the frosted glass doors
and it wasn’t until I knocked and began sliding one open that they looked up at us

“Ruth like myself is concerned about the runaway corruption in Kenya, the poverty 59 years after the independence, the high cost of living, the bad leadership and recycling of leadership that comes year in, year out the bureaucracy and the never ending impunity,” Mwaure said.
“And this is something that our competitors will not be able to do because they have been the godfathers of this impunity and corruption.”
Mutua said she is upto the task adding that the country needs new and fresh leadership for it to move forward.
“It is good to recognize that we are the new team, the dream team and the new energy that is coming into office. I am coming to represent the women, the youth and those abled differently. We are the new leaders that the Kenyans have been waiting for,” she said.
Mwaure and Mutua further stated that they will conduct their campaigns both in public barazas and on social media.
He announced that the government has already provided him with the necessary security after he was cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to run for the presidency.
Mwaure who is one of the four candidates eying the top seat exuded confidence that the IEBC is set and well prepared to conduct the polls.
“Based on the grueling process that I went through during clearance, I can tell they are up to the task and my request would just be about the electronic transmission of the results. I hope the commission will ensure that the technology is reliable,” Mwaure said.
Others who have been cleared to run for the presidency include Deputy President William Ruto of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), Raila Odinga of the Azimio La Umoja One Party and George Wajakoyah of the Roots Party.

In 1993, Niigata Russian Village was opened to encourage relations between Japan and Russia. It was subsequently closed and opened again after renovations in 2002. It was then open for only six months before lack of visitors forced it to close yet again.
Now after over 8 years of being abandoned the park is an amazing sight. The park includes a large cathedral, hotel (which has sustained a great deal of fire damage), multiple theaters, restaurants, and even a golf course.
No doubt the most amazing and curious part of the abandoned structure is the woolly mammoth (fake) taxidermy and skeleton that were left behind in the now empty Russian Village.
Update: As of July 2016 the park is mostly demolished.

Dubbed 'Badilisha', English for 'Change', Agano’s manifesto makes the proposition of starting from a clean slate and is anchored on 12 Aganos (pledges).
These are: Agano to the constitution, the Family, Women, Youth, Persons Living with Disability, County Governments, Workers, Business Owners, the Economy, Religious Institutions, the Environment, as well as Agano to the International Community
Should he and his running mate, Ruth Mutua, ascend to power in August, David Mwaure has pledged to increase revenue allocation to counties to 40%, designate 10% of the 40% to go directly to the Village councils.
Mr. Mwaure intends to convene a taskforce to study the possibilities of dissolving Nairobi County after this election so that post-2027, Nairobi governor be an appointee of the president after elections and an automatic member of the cabinet.
In his plan for Kenyan workers, he has pledged a general waiver of 50% PAYE, as well as a conducive environment for the private sector, individuals, and others to set up businesses in a bid to boost entrepreneurship.
The biting economic state is also in his manifesto, and the spirant plans to move the Asset Recovery Agency to the Presidency, devolve budgeting to the Village Councils as opposed to the Treasury or State House Budget office, and go after the ‘big fish’ of corruption and ensure they are subjected to the due process of the law.
Mwaure further intends to create a legal framework that will ensure Public Sector Audit General reports are prima facie evidence in abuse of office and misappropriation of funds.
“We will ensure the Ksh. 15 trillion stolen and stashed abroad is returned to Kenya in consultation with all the concerned countries where these funds are,” promised Mr. Mwaure.
His government will also limit the total loan repayments by the government to Ksh.1 trillion.
“This will immediately release Kshs.350B to support government programs. We will urgently call for a meeting with our lenders to arrive at a fresh repayment plan to ensure the country does not fall into debt distress,” he said.
Additionally, all contracts with foreign entities starting with SGR, Nairobi Expressway, Mombasa, Lamu, Naivasha and Kisumu ports will be made public under his administration.
The Agano government has also promised to create an office for the Registrar of Families and use the data collected for the Huduma Number to refocus government planning to be family-centred.
Mr. Mwaure will ensure that each registered family has at least one person who is employed and roll out the Universal Healthcare Coverage program based on disease and demography.
Priority will be given to cancer, accident victims and all forms of medical/non-elective surgery.
He has further promised to waive medical bills for any person who dies in a government hospital.
Furthermore, old persons above 70 years will get access to free medical services.
In a bid to enhance the security of the country, Mr. Mwaure’s administration intends to equip the security sector and make it “a place of pride to serve.”
They also will introduce community policing starting from the village council level.
Similarly, Mr. Mwaure has promised to implement the 2/3 gender rule in all appointive positions and enhance access to government procurement opportunities (AGPO) reservation to youth, women and people living with disability quota to 40 percent.
Under their pledge to business owners, his administration has promised to verify all County and National government pending bills and convert them to government bonds.
“Local content bill will be enforced to ensure that all tenders below Ksh. 1 billion are exclusively awarded to local companies,” said Mwaure.

Congratulations to the winners of the Best PhD Presentation Eugene B Dowdle Awards. A joint 1st was given to Alisha Chetty and Nada Abdel Aziz. While Agano Kiravu took 2nd prize and 3rd prize went to Cheleka Mpande.
The Eugene B Dowdle Awards saw all the Division of Immunology PhD students competing for best presentation on their PhD research. The presentations were 8 minutes with 5 minutes for questions. External moderators kept very strict time limits and oversaw the presentations. While five judges selected from other departments scored the PhD candidates and maintained fairness through the competition.
The Eugene B Dowdle awards were the first of their kind made possible by the very first Head of Department for the Division of Immunology; Eugene B Dowdle. Prof Dowdle's daughter, Susan Dowdle, now living in Australia, was included as she signed the certificates given to each winner.
A total of 15 students presented on their work all competing for the cash prizes of R15,000 for 1st, R7,000 for 2nd and R3,500 for 3rd place. The presentations took place during May and June with the winners announced on the 18th July 2019.
Head of Department Clive Gray and 1st Prize Alisha Chetty, 2nd Prize Agano Kiravu and 3rd Prize Cheleka Mpande
The ceremony was held in the Wolfson Pavilion where Alisha Chetty and Nada Abdel Aziz each won the first prize of R15,000. Nada was unable to be at the ceremony, so a friend accepted her certificate. Agano Kiravu took the 2nd prize of R7,000 and Cheleka Mpande scooped 3rd place and R3,500.
The ceremony was followed by a finger lunch in the IDM foyer with many attending from the Division to congratulate the winners.

Kuhn said the change does not signal a shift in TWU’s values: It stands behind the religious perspective behind the covenant

He said the school’s attempts to establish a law school was “not irrelevant” to the decision

Guerra Maynes’s organization had provided support to those who took the fight over TWU’s covenant to the Supreme Court of Canada
TWU became the subject of headlines and controversy after it announced in 2012 plans to open an evangelical law school
While the proposal received approval from the Federation of Law Societies of Canada
both B.C.’s and Ontario’s law societies said they would refuse to accredit future graduates from the program due to the university’s governing values
detailed in the school’s community covenant agreement
the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that societies governing the law profession had the right to deny accreditation to TWU
which could have opened in September 2019 if the ruling had been favourable
No students had been enrolled and the province withdrew its accreditation for the school in 2014
said that because B.C.’s Ministry of Advanced Education had not approved TWU for a law degree program
the matter now remained between those two parties

The leaders agreed that the parties will form a coalition in the coming days
Agano party leader Senior Counsel Mwaure Waihiga has been endorsed to run for the presidency
Waihiga was endorsed on Tuesday by a total of 20 unfunded political parties in a function that took place at Macha Beach Resort
The leaders agreed that the parties will form a coalition in the coming days before embarking on a nationwide campaign to drum up support for their candidate
his administration will fight corruption completely without bias
“These others cannot fight corruption because if you look at their backgrounds
they are joined at the hip in various areas,” Waihiga said
He added that among the candidates who have declared interest in the seat
some have been in politics for over 10 years and have not been able to change the situation in the country
hence the need for an alternative choice for Kenyans as they get ready to elect their fifth president come August 2022
Waihiga joins Deputy President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga who have publicly declared they will be on the ballot
Party of Independent Candidates of Kenya chairperson Julius Wambua said their candidate is in the race to the very end
“We are not giving up; we are not going to be cowed
We are giving the country an alternative voice
We urge Kenyans all over the country to come out and support our bid to give fresh leadership and breath fresh air into the country’s politics,” Wambua said
Raila announced his candidature during the Azimio La Umoja Convention that took place at Kasarani Stadium on December 10
a move that will see him running for the same seat for the fifth time

has petitioned the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to deploy psychiatrists to assess the mental state of his Roots Party competitor
Speaking during a press briefing on Thursday, June 30, Mwaure questioned Wajackoyah's mental fitness, citing his draconian and rather controversial methods of dealing with some of the country's issues
He explained that the assessment would save the country a lot of time if conducted now as compared to a later date in the event Wajackoyah wins the August 9 presidential vote
to immediately constitute a panel of imminent psychiatrists to ascertain the mental state of this individual," Mwaure petitioned
The Agano Party presidential candidate further proposed that if found to be unstable
Wajackoyah should receive the best treatment available in the country
On the flipside, if the findings reveal he is of sound mind, he called on the government to fully enforce the law, accusing Wajackoyah of encouraging drug trafficking and consumption.
he should be accorded the best medical attention possible
then he should be arrested and charged in a court of law for willfully planning to commit and promoting a felony," Mwaure added
Among the proposals by Wajackoyah that Mwaure differed with was the cultivation of marijuana in public spaces
suspending the constitution and rearing of snakes for export
The lawyer cum preacher further called out the Roots Party leader for allegedly attacking religious leaders and asking Kenyans to abscond churches
accusing him of being a messenger of the devil
"Yesterday he said that the Archbishop from Nyeri is a bishop from hell
The same fellow has urged Christians to abandon places of worship
who else but lucifer can give Christians such instructions?" posed Mwaure
The Agano presidential hopeful vowed to introduce a mandatory toxicity and mental aptitude test for any individuals seeking public office
Mwaure further disclosed that he would be launching the Agano party manifesto on July 4

Agano presidential candidate David Mwaure Waihiga has hit out at Roots presidential candidate George Wajackoyah over his church comments
Mwaure said Wajackoyah would not respect churches if elected President
The Agano presidential candidate said that the church had been a beacon of hope in Kenya and helped keep governments in check
"The remarks of Wajackoyah shows he will have no respect and regard for about 80% of Kenyans who attend or belong to churches and
he will have no respect for freedom of worship
I call on him to retract his words and apologize to the catholic church
religious institutions," part of the statement read

They only went straight into smoking of marijuana
