Kol Ami invites you to a joyful and affirming Shabbat service honoring LGBTQ+ Pride Month
and the Jewish values that call us to stand for justice and inclusion
our focus is on studying actions that are repetitive
recurrent and purposive” -this line was frequently echoed by one of the professors at the Department of Sociology
I have been a committed student of the discipline from the very beginning
I still recall my school sociology teacher on the first day of grade 11 saying
“You now have three boyfriends who’ll stick with you for life
and Weber.” And she couldn’t have been more accurate
I had the option to pursue Psychology – often viewed (now) as an ‘acceptable’ and ‘prestigious’ choice – at Lady Shri Ram College
trusting an inner pull I couldn’t ignore (and I’m so glad I did)
I continued my undergraduate studies at LSR
followed by a postgraduate degree from the Delhi School of Economics
And it’s safe to say that the last five years have been incredible
opening vistas of learning and broadening one’s horizons
it became increasingly clear to me what I truly wanted to pursue
Unlike many who take sociology as an easier path to cracking the UPSC
Combined with the dynamic environment at LSR – home to so many strong
and passionate young women – I knew I wanted to delve deeper into the space of Gender and Women’s Studies
As soon as I completed my final Masters exams last year
I was fortunate to step into the very field I had aspired to – women and health
I’ve been working at Ipas Development Foundation
a non-profit dedicated to advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights for women in India for over two decades
what stood out most was seeing women at the heart of the organization
the journey from theory to practice has been far more enriching than I could have imagined
Each field visit – whether to districts of Diamond Harbor
Alwar or Jodhpur – has led to a new observation in its way
What began as site visits to understand health systems or community attitudes soon began revealing something deeper: the quiet codes and symbolic structures that govern everyday life
especially while working in the field of reproductive health and gender justice
involves moving between data and experience
It is a practice of noticing what goes unsaid and yet deeply felt
it requires me to occupy two roles at once: the one who listens
and the one who cannot unsee what she has just witnessed
but the questions it provokes are profoundly personal
I visited a home where four generations lived under one roof
and we sat in a circle – the ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist)
But while the older women took the chairs offered
the young daughters-in-law instinctively sat on the floor
their silence and posture conveyed more than a survey form ever could
was not simply material – it was symbolic
To sit on it was to occupy a space of deference
the chair became a marker of the Sacred – reserved
legitimised – while the floor became a site of the Profane: every day
their distance from the conversation – all spoke to an internalised order that was not enforced by threat
as one moved from one household to another
was the growing relevance of the signifier
it is the signifier that determines the signified – not the other way around
the signifier is reshaped by other signifiers – whispers
Culture and society are not in a hierarchy but in a constant dialogue
The reproduction of deeply entrenched societal norms within health-related interactions was particularly striking
Public,’ as articulated by Sherry Ortner in Is Female to Nature as Male Is to Culture
found renewed relevance – gender roles were not only visible but actively reinforced
Women remained closely associated with the private sphere and with nature
while men were linked to the public and the culture
this dynamic played out in unexpected yet telling ways
One of my male colleagues often had to stay back and avoid entering the homes
refused to lift their ghoonghat – the veil
and appeared to listen to him more openly than they did to us
the symbolic gains more power than the real
to question the symbol – be it the chair
or the role – is to risk challenging the very structure that holds the community together
This is the delicate dance of doing sociology: not just to observe
to notice who isn’t speaking and who always sits on the floor
decoding the structure within the anti-structure
and often questioning the very frameworks we were taught Without this critical perspective
no policy can truly be implemented successfully
Much like Durkheim’s assertion that religion is society worshipping itself
who listens and who responds – mirror the community’s foundation
is not only a subject of the health system – but she also becomes a symbol of it
becomes a practice of seeing – carefully
the most telling truths are the ones no one is explicitly naming
By studying gender through the lens of sociology
one seeks to turn the gaze both inward and outward
sparking conversations that demand change and forge new pathways for equality
The goal is to balance the ability to generalize broad propositions while delving into the unique particularities that shape lived experiences
I hope to contribute meaningfully to the discipline
giving overdue recognition to its female theorists and remaining open to learning from the complexities of the world around me
Ami Sahgal is a 23-year-old female working at a non-profit organisation dedicated to sexual and reproductive health rights in India
She holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Lady Shri Ram College for Women (2022)
where she was awarded the university medal
and recently completed her master’s degree from the Department of Sociology at Delhi School of Economics (2024)
A passionate advocate for women’s issues
Ami is committed to addressing concerns related to health
She aspires to specialise in Gender Studies
From the perspective of students of Sociology based in India
this crisis raised by the novel coronavirus is consequential for knowledge and how we understand it
This blog hopes to be a site to further the sociological consciousness
to explore the idea that things may not be quite what they seem to be.We plan to use this space to ‘cultivate’ the sociological imagination
We live in strange times – at once connected and at once lonely

The nonprofit Rockland Housing Action Committee is partnering with Regan Development
to construct 17 duplex-style homes at 55 Schriever Lane in New City
The team appeared before Clarkstown’s Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) last week
and located to the west of and behind a group of commercial properties on South Main Street in New City
zoned R-15 (single-family homes on 15,000 square foot parcels)
is surrounded by residential neighborhoods of single-family homes to the north
The development team plans to offer the individual units for sale to eligible first-time home buyers earning 80% of Rockland County’s Area Median Income (AMI) as set by HUD (Housing & Urban Development)
a family of four can earn up to $124,400 to be eligible
by incorporating $462,143 of subsidies per home
the purchase price can be reduced from $768,384 to $306,241 so a low-income buyer earning up to 80% of Rockland County median can qualify for a mortgage to purchase a home
The development will be called Homesteads At Demarest
The development plan is complicated by new New York State DEC regulations on wetlands
To mitigate the impact of wetlands on the site
the developers have proposed clustering the houses on a portion of the property outside the wetlands
Approvals for cluster developments require reviews by both DEC and the Town of Clarkstown
No Rockland County GML review is required based on the location of the property
The plan was originally introduced to include 20 homes
Clarkstown’s code provides cluster development as an alternative in residential zones “to enable and encourage flexibility of design and development of land in such a manner as to preserve the natural and scenic qualities of open lands in order to preserve the natural and scenic qualities of open lands.”
the entire almost three acres of wetlands on the site will remain undisturbed
Without clustering a portion of the wetlands
The wetlands are associated with a tributary of the Demarest Kill which runs along the eastern edge of the site from north to south
The clustering plan would also override the zoning codes requirement for lot size
and side-yards that are traditionally part of the R-15 single-family zone
To protect the environmentally sensitive area around the wetlands
the developer would likely give the Town of Clarkstown conservation easements
the buyers of the houses would be deed restricted from increasing the homes’ footprints or size
Rockland County’s need for affordable housing is acute and ongoing
the County of Rockland commissioned a Housing Needs Assessment from Pattern for Progress
The report found that there was a lack of housing in general
and that the available housing was insufficient to meet the needs of Rockland County residents
Regan Development Company, a large regional affordable housing builder, along with its nonprofit partner Rockland Housing Action Coalition (RHAC), also plan to build 52 affordable units of 55-plus senior housing at 250 South Middletown Road in Nanuet
Plans for the $24 million development call for razing the Chase Bank to build the housing project on 2.5 acres that are within the Nanuet Hamlet
RHAC is a 20 percent partner in the redevelopment deal
The nonprofit will manage rentals once that project is built
The project will be available to seniors who are qualified as low-income renters at or below 80 percent of the AMI (Area Medium Income) in Clarkstown
Clarkstown residents will get a preference on the units
Rockland County awarded Regan Development $5 million in a revolving loan fund for the project through its Housing Actions Loan Opportunity (HALO) program
Projected rents for the units in Regan’s Nanuet project are $2,330 monthly for one-bedroom apartments; $2,796 monthly for two bedrooms
A Metro website offers up a look at proposals from eight different teams vying for the rights to redevelop an agency-owned property at the intersection of Wilshire and Crenshaw Boulevards
The approximately 60,000-square-foot property, which has been used for construction staging as part of the Purple Line extension, has been pitched as one of several properties where Metro aims to reach its goal of building 10,000 homes on agency-owned land
Metro expects to select a developer for the property by June 2025
Community Development Partners has envisioned the site with a collection of five-story buildings arranged around common pathways and open spaces
Plans also call for 3,500 square feet of community space
Abode Communities and Koning Eizenberg Architecture have proposed a project dubbed Walnut Crossing
which will also include space for KYCC and TMC Community Capital
Other project components would include 4,540 square feet of community space
Non-profit developer West Hollywood Community Housing has teamed with TCA Architects and MJS Landscape Architecture on the most densely-populated of the eight concepts
Plans also call for 2,00 square feet of community space
A proposal from PATH Ventures and Warren Techentin Architecture calls for building up to 256 homes on the site
Plans also call for 40 of those homes to serve as permanent supportive housing
complemented by 3,350 square feet of community space
A proposal from Mercy Housing California and CTY Housing, with design work by AO
calls for the construction of 125 homes on the property
plans call for 5,754 square feet of community space
A proposal from EAH Housing and VTBS Architects would bring 112 homes to the property
Other project components would include 4,200 square feet of community space
Bridge Housing and architecture firm Steinberg Hart, which have also teamed up on a proposal for another Metro opportunity site in Santa Monica
have pitched a concept with 259 homes for the Wilshire/Crenshaw site
Proposed ancillary features would include 5,000 square feet of community space
The eighth and final proposal comes from The Urban Coalition and Better Angels Affordable Housing Fund I, LLP, with design works by Perkins&Will.
including 170 units at 80 percent AMI and 42 units at 110 percent of AMI
40 units would be reserved for transition age youth
Other project elements include 2,000 square feet of community space
more than 27,000 square feet of open space
A representative of the project team says via e-mail that competing proposals
in light of a recent revelation that the city cannot support new low-income housing tax credit projects in the near term future due to its budget crisis
The Better Angels / Urban Coalition project is instead utilizing private financing

What started as a playful design experiment is now becoming a full-fledged production vehicle
Citroën has officially announced that the Ami Buggy
originally teased as a concept and briefly available in an ultra-limited edition run of just 50 units
will officially join its 2025 production lineup
And while fans across Europe are thrilled at the news
there’s a big caveat: this micro-mobility marvel is still not coming to the U.S
The Ami Buggy is based on Citroën’s all-electric Ami city car
This electric two-seater was clearly inspired by a Jeep’s sense of fun and freedom
but packed into a minimalist urban form that’s all about zipping through tight city streets
Think of it as a beach cruiser with a plug
When Citroën first revealed the Ami Buggy as a concept
it drew curiosity for its ultra-compact form and no-frills design
But it wasn’t until the limited release of 50 units in 2022 that the hype became real—they sold out in under 20 minutes
with buyers eager to own a piece of electric car history
That overwhelming response made it clear: people wanted more
the Ami Buggy will be available in full production
opening up access to this quirky electric machine beyond just the lucky few who got in early
The Ami Buggy carries over the fundamentals of the standard Citroën Ami—a top speed of 28 mph
and a full recharge time of 4 hours using a 220-volt European socket
but it’s more than enough for short city commutes
and low-speed joyrides through European neighborhoods
And it does it all for a base price of just over $10,840
For those who want a bit more weather protection
Citroën also offers zippered fabric door covers as an optional accessory
a removable soft top sunroof transforms the car into an open-air electric cruiser
channeling those summertime dune buggy vibes
The exterior gets a rugged aesthetic upgrade as well: 14-inch gold-finish steel wheels and a sleek black rear spoiler give the Buggy just enough edge to stand apart from the typical urban EV fleet
It’s the kind of vehicle that looks at home parked next to surfboards or rolling up to a skatepark
the Ami Buggy isn’t built for highways—or even fast backroads
It’s classified as a quadricycle in many parts of Europe
meaning it often doesn’t require a full driver’s license to operate
That makes it especially appealing to younger drivers and urban dwellers looking for a stylish
and eco-friendly alternative to scooters or rideshare
Its 46-mile electric range is more than enough to cover a day’s worth of errands or neighborhood exploration
And thanks to its compact footprint and plug-and-play charging
the Ami Buggy is an ideal solution for cities trying to reduce congestion and emissions
Despite the excitement surrounding the Ami Buggy’s return
Citroën has no plans to bring it to the U.S.—at least not yet
The issue likely comes down to federal safety regulations and the U.S.’s infrastructure (and expectations) for vehicles
28-mph EV might sound like a dream in places like Venice Beach
the regulatory barriers are higher than the car’s price tag
that hasn’t stopped American fans from admiring from afar
The Buggy’s combination of function and flair taps into something that’s been missing from many U.S.-based EV releases: personality
Where many electric cars focus on futuristic minimalism or hyper-performance
the Ami Buggy isn’t just another electric vehicle—it’s a statement piece
With a growing interest in urban micro-mobility solutions
it fits into the global trend toward compact
sustainable transportation that doesn’t sacrifice style
It’s the kind of vehicle you buy not just to get from point A to B
This is the EV equivalent of a streetwear drop—limited-run aesthetic
and just enough performance to make it useful without being mainstream
Want to explore the specs or dream-build your own Ami Buggy? Head to Citroën’s official site to check it out: Learn More from Citroën.
Just don’t expect it to pop up at your local dealership in Los Angeles or New York any time soon
The Citroën Ami Buggy is making its way into full production for 2025
and electric efficiency to more drivers across Europe
but it’s undeniably one of the most interesting—and fun—EV stories of the year
it’s a reminder that the future of mobility doesn’t always mean going faster
Would you take the Ami Buggy for a spin if it hit U.S

Noah Brown made some shocking allegations regarding his mom, Ami Brown, just days before his younger sister Rain Brown was arrested this month and charged with burglary
malicious mischief and criminal trespassing.
According to The Sun, days before Rain ended up behind bars with her husband, Josiah Lorton, Noah contacted police to conduct a welfare check on both Ami and Rain, whom Noah claimed were “couch surfing” with Rain’s “aggressive” husband.
In court paperwork obtained by The Sun, Noah told police that he believes his mom is “off her meds,” drinking a lot and taking meth.
“[Noah] has tried contacting his mother after receiving a ‘disjointed message’ last night and heard she has been drinking a lot and she is now taking meth that was given by [Rain] and Josiah,” the court documents read.
A post shared by Rain Lorton (@heroofkirrkwell)
Police reportedly contacted Noah April 8 to notify him that there had been an attempt to contact Ami and that Ami “might be” with Rain and Josiah. In response, Noah claimed that Rain “struggles to keep up with taking her medication and thinks that anybody who tries to force her to take it is the devil.”
“Noah continued to explain that Josiah is known to always be armed,” court documents stated. “Additionally, Noah explained that [Rain] had also taken a pistol from him. Noah didn’t want to list it as stolen, but wanted me to be cautious when attempting to contact her.
A post shared by Rain Lorton (@heroofkirrkwell)
Noah advised me that his mother and [Rain] refer to Josiah Lorton as the next ‘Messiah,’ which extremely worried Noah,” the documents continued.
According to The Sun, an officer went on to speak to a man who claimed to have met Josiah and Rain on a job site and had offered to let the couple stay at his home, as the two appeared to be living out of a car. The man alleged that Josiah and Rain had with them a large “diaper bag full of pills.”
A post shared by Rain Lorton (@heroofkirrkwell)
An officer did attempt to do the welfare check that Noah requested
“I advised Noah that I attempted to contact his mother (Amora Brown.) I also explained to Noah that I had discovered that Amora might be with his sister Merry
In addition to “stalking,” Noah and Rhain claimed that there was a “threat of violence including malicious and intentional threat or presence of firearm/weapon causing substantial emotional distress.”
The two had requested that Rain make “no attempts” to contact them directly, indirectly or through third parties, and that she not be allowed to come within 1,000 feet of them, their residence, their children’s school and more. Rhain and Noah also requested that their two sons be protected from their aunt, and that Rain be required to give up all firearms and be prohibited from obtaining more.

While the Brown family has yet to publicly speak out about Noah’s latest allegations, Rain took to social media earlier this month proclaiming her innocence in the aftermath of her arrest.
“It hurts my heart that my rainbows would choose to believe the lies that my old manager who stole $43,000 from me and abused me instead of maybe thinking, ‘Oh no who is saying this about Rain?’ Not ‘Wow what a waste,’” she wrote. “It deeply hurts my heart.

“With all this said I hope y’all will stick around to hear my side of the story,” she continued

A guide to the newest places to eat and drink
Chefs Amy Phan and Zach Ramos first started selling their jewel box-like chirashi bowls as a carryout luxury during the thick of Covid lockdowns
Now after a series of pop ups around town—in addition to private in-home omakase tastings—the Sushi Taro alums have finally landed in a permanent location in Georgetown
Two Nine (formerly Ama Ami) features an intimate omakase counter upstairs and a takeout-only daytime cafe downstairs
The stars of the daytime cafe are the stunning chirashi bowls
which use premium seafood sourced mainly from Japan’s Toyosu fish market
One of Two Nine’s signatures is the “Tokujo” bowl ($60)
plus an even more luxe option with seasonal specialties (like firefly squid
What’s unique about Two Nine is that they also change up their rice recipe four times a year to complement the fish of the season
sweeter winter fish is paired with a more acidic rice seasoning
Leaner fish in springtime comes with more lightly dressed rice so it’s not overpowered by the vinegar
The chefs also use Okinawan black sugar in the seasoning to give the rice its darker color
you’ll also find “ono nigiri” inspired by the oversized sushi piled high with garnishes that are often found at conveyor belt sushi restaurants in Hawaii
Bluefin tuna nigiri is dressed like poke with ginger
seared amberjack nigiri channels the flavors of grilled amberjack collar marinated in a miso-honey sauce
Japanese-inspired pastries and specialty coffee and tea drinks are also available throughout the day
Particularly popular is is the ice-shaken matcha
which doesn’t have any dairy but still has a creamy
velvety texture thanks to the right combination of Uji matcha
Phan is the pastry talent behind adorable turtle-shaped cream puffs
which come in strawberry and other rotating seasonal flavors
where Ramos prepares 17 to 21 courses at $205 per person
Two Nine devotes eights seats to the tasting
but an additional four are available for diners to order sushi a la carte from around 30 different selections
(Reservations for the latter are available
but they’ll take walk-ins if they’re not booked.)
“The menu changes every single day,” Ramos says
“The tunas will stay on and king salmon stays on
but I don’t think there’s any other restaurant that has a revolving nigiri sushi menu that changes on a daily basis.”
Ramos says they are working with four different seafood buyers to gain access to a large variety of premium seafood
The chef will often stay up until 2 AM so that he’s the first to claim a particular type of specialty fish from his Japan-based purveyor
The omakase includes a combination of composed dishes and nigiri
“I would not say it’s a nigiri-focused tasting menu
We’re having a nice balance between multiple appetizers to start
Ramos brings some of his Hawaiian roots to a classic goma tofu by making it with coconut and spinach instead of soybeans
Other starters recently included marinated giant octopus leg from Hokkaido with wasabi stems as well as bioluminescent squid with a soy-vinegar jelly
The tasting also highlights different types of sea urchin
(Ramos says there are more than 60 purveyors of the specialty at the Toyosu fish market.) Expect three to four uni options at any given time
including some in filtered ocean water to prevent oxidation
A small but mighty sake list was curated by Louie Anne Batac-Nguyen
a certified sake sommelier with Capital Sake
Sake pairings are also available for $120 or $75
Two Nine hopes to use the restaurant for collaborations and pop-ups
The name Two Nine is a play on the word “tunay” meaning “to be genuine or true to oneself” in Ramos’s grandfather’s native tongue
The number has also become a lucky one in his family
and other family members similarly have establishments with 29
The upstairs dining room has 29 window installations
and omakase reservations go live on the—you guessed it—29th of each month
intimate feel of the “homakase” dinners that Ramos and Phan used to host in people’s homes

Citroën The new Citroën Ami Buggy is a stripped-down
The nickname given to this car by the French automobile brand
is a French word loosely translating to “adventurer”
More like your friend who randomly dips to Montpellier on a Tuesday just to catch a vibe
Born from the 2019 Ami One Concept
the Buggy keeps that same wide-eyed optimism
just metal hoops; a roof that rolls back; yellow-tinted trim and a few stash boxes for good measure; the mascot is even optional (but yes
The whole thing leans into a kind of playful industrialism
purpose-built for warm-weather impulse trips
Citroën 1 / 3And that’s exactly the spirit of the Ami Buggy
sun-chasing machine built for bouncing from beach to beach without worrying too much about where you’ll end up
Citroën 1 / 2It’s not trying to be a statement
“can you fit two people in here?” small — but that’s the charm
Starting at €7,990, Ami Buggy might even cost less than the floral nappa leather or vegetable-shaped “it” bags you’re tossing in the backseat
Think of it not as your daily driver, but rather as your summer accessory for carrying summer accessories.

we propose a streamlined process for AMI replacement
thus mitigating the risks associated with outdated AMIs
The following example list a series of tasks that need automation:
serverless approach to automating infrastructure updates
This orchestration service simplifies the update process
leading to enhanced operational efficiency
Implementing Step Functions reduces the potential for human error and ensures consistently up-to-date infrastructure with the latest application versions
To access the AWS Lambda function code and Step Function definition, retrieve the Git repository at https://github.com/aws-samples/example-code-for-automation-with-amazon-ec2-auto-scaling
Using Step Functions enhances operational efficiency
ensuring consistent deployment and maintenance of infrastructure with the latest application versions
– GetASGAndLaunchTemplate: Retrieves configuration details
– Sysprep: Prepares instances for AMI creation
– UpdateASG: Updates launch template versions
– Status Check Functions: Monitor instance and AMI states
Figure 1 shows the architecture of the automation in our solution
This Lambda function handles the initial setup by:
This Lambda function manages the operating system preparation by:
Repeat steps 1 to 7 as shown earlier to create a new AWS Lambda function and then
Use the sysprep_v1.py script from the GitHub repository you cloned earlier
Ensure the Lambda execution role has permissions to use SSM
The role must have the following policies:
This Lambda function handles ASG updates through:
Use the updateASG_v1.py script from the GitHub repository you cloned earlier
Add the following permissions through the IAM console or attach an inline policy:
Two functions to ensure smooth operations:
Use the check-instance-state_v1.py script from the GitHub repository you cloned earlier
Follow the previous steps to create another function (e.g., check-ami-status)
Use the check-ami-status-function_v1.py script from the GitHub repository you cloned earlier
Ensure the Lambda execution role from these two functions includes the AmazonEC2ReadOnlyAccess policy
Repeat steps 1 to 7 as shown earlier to create AWS Lambda function and then
Use the Cleanup_v1.py from the GitHub repository you cloned earlier
Ensure the Lambda execution role has permissions to call terminate_instances and deregister_image by including the following permissions:
Create a state machine that orchestrates the Lambda functions using the provided ASL (Amazon State Language) JSON template
Open the AWS Step Functions Console and navigate to State Machines using the left navigation menu
Use the ASL (Amazon State language) JSON file “StepFunction_v4” from the GitHub repository you cloned earlier
This script will create a state machine like the one in Figure 2
Figure 2: Visual Definition of State Function
description and event bus (default) as shown in Figure 3
use the following code (in JSON format) to configure the source pattern
“detail-type”: [“Backup Job State Change”]
select AWS Service for Target Type and Step Functions state machine in the target
Figure 4: configuring Target pattern in EventBridge Rule
Choose the name of State Function you created
select Input transformer for Configure target input
Figure 5: EventBridge Rule Input Transformer
Here, we are using the following input transformer. (as shown in Figure 6)
Figure 6: EventBridge Rule Input Transformer
go to Review and create and select Create rule to create the Event Bridge Rule
Schedule regular backups or create on-demand backups of application servers
Successful backup completion triggers the automation workflow
Once the AWS Backup job runs for your EC2 Instance and the job state changes to Completed
EventBridge will execute the sysprep process
Verify the AMI ID in the ASG launch template under Latest version
This should match with backup AMI created by the Step Function
AWS Step Functions empowers applications with robust automation capabilities
This facilitates the creation of complex workflows that integrate diverse AWS services
enabling businesses to adapt rapidly to evolving operational requirements and bolstering their agility within the cloud ecosystem
This Automation process use an AWS Step Function and six Lambda Functions – the dynamic duo that orchestrates the entire process
You only pay for what you use. These serverless components sit quietly in your AWS account
not burning through your budget while idle
But what about all those resources created during the automation process
The solution implements a cleanup mechanism using a dedicated Lambda function which deletes resources once they’ve served their purpose
This approach ensures your AWS environment stays tidy and cost-efficient
And when you’re completely done with the automation
You can easily remove the Step Functions and Lambda Functions through the AWS Console with just a few clicks
It’s as simple as selecting the components and hitting delete
AWS Step Functions offer a robust solution for automating the creation of Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) and the subsequent update of Auto Scaling Groups (ASGs)
This orchestration service minimizes manual intervention
leading to increased operational efficiency and improved consistency within the infrastructure
Automated workflows facilitate the standardized creation and management of Amazon Machine Images (AMIs)
thereby mitigating the potential for human error
Seamless integration with diverse Amazon Web Services (AWS) offerings enables streamlined updates to launch configurations and templates
ensuring Auto Scaling Groups (ASGs) consistently utilize the most current images
AWS Step Functions enhance process robustness through integrated error handling and monitoring features
facilitating swift remediation of emergent issues
adoption of this service promotes a more resilient and agile cloud infrastructure

including as commander of the navy and head of the Shin Bet
protecting Israel and defending it from external and internal threats
along with 17 other colleagues who have also dedicated their lives to Israel’s security and welfare
I made a decision that the future of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state is so under threat that it is not just my responsibility
Our government is undermining the democratic functions of the state to shore up and protect its own power
It is forcing us into a perpetual war with no achievable military objectives and which can only result in more loss of life and hatred

It is no longer enough to keep this discussion solely within the borders of Israel
We need to make sure that our allies abroad understand how grave the danger is
We need our friends from outside Israel to express their support for the Israeli people and not an extremist government committed to unravelling the fabric of the state
The 36 individuals who wrote a public letter expressed the exact concerns and sentiments that we have been articulating on the streets
It is not easy to speak out and I commend them for their bravery

Citroën announced this week that it's giving the Ami Buggy a primetime slot
It will now be offered as a trim level that doesn't have any production limits
The 2025 Citroën Ami Buggy, and the zesty Ami Buggy Palmeira with its yellow interior accents and robot bobblehead named Andy, will be the top two trims in the Ami range
The cheapest Ami costs the equivalent of just over $9,000
while the cheapest Ami Buggy costs about $10,950
while the top-of-the-line Buggy Palmeira starts at about $11,400
Buggy models swap out their normal doors for hinged metal tubes
Upgrading to the Ami Buggy doesn't outfit the diminutive city car with any true off-road abilities
Ami Buggys lose their regular doors and roof panel to allow owners to experience their car's sub-50-mile electric driving range alfresco
They still feign all-weather usability with zipped door covers and a soft top included to keep occupants dry
Ami Buggys also gain another hilarious addition that's exclusively there for vibes — a rear spoiler to keep it glued to the road while traveling at its top speed of a blistering 28 mph
The standard wheels are swapped out for 14-inch steelies finished in gold
while the Citroën chevron is painted black and the Ami logo is bright yellow
Opting for the top-line Palmeira trim injects some color into the Buggy
with bright yellow exterior accents and interior touches including three yellow storage boxes
And your Ami Buggy Palmeira comes with a new friend named Andy
with no relation to our very own Andy Kalmowitz
Andy is a tiny robot bobblehead who "perfectly captures the new Ami Buggy's playful spirit" and nods along to the rhythm of the road
Citroën says order books will open for the new Ami and Ami Buggy in France on May 6
The Ami is also offered with a Cargo Kit that partitions off the driver's seat and covers the passenger seat to protect it from whatever cargo owners choose to haul inside
and the seat cover is made of four sections
Both can be installed and removed to swap the Ami from two-seater to one seat cargo hauler and back quickly
the Ami provides a whopping 12 cubic-feet of maximum space
The new Ami will be available with a conversion kit that allows easier access for wheelchair users
though the description of how it works seems deeply complicated
and some shelves and straps to help wheelchair users to hoist themselves into the seat before removing their wheelchair's wheels
and putting the wheelchair frame in the passenger seat
Though we don't get the adorable Ami in the U.S.
its use case in our massive country wouldn't be nearly as compelling as it is in Europe's dense cities
you'll have to buy a used Mitsubishi i-MIEV
Unfortunately there are no options that are quite as chic or doorless as an Ami Buggy
will start at €7,990 - the same base price as its predecessor model
Citroën has also unveiled the Ami Buggy at the Paris Motor Show
Both the updated Ami and the new Buggy version will be available to order in Europe from May 6 onwards
The new Ami features a range of 75km with a 4 hour recharge time via AC and comes in three new colour packs (‘Spicy’
the vehicle can be driven from the age of 14 without a full driving licence
it requires an AM moped licence (which 16-year-olds and up can obtain) or a full driving licence
Citroën is also expanding its micromobility offering with the new ‘Buggy’ version of the Ami
it is primarily designed for outdoor leisure use (it uses ‘black metal hoops mounted on hinges’ instead of doors)
be able to buy zipped door covers as an additional extra which can be rolled up and stored when not in use
it has a black spoiler and 14″ steel wheels with a gold finish
Both vehicles come with a range of interior equipment including 3 storage boxes
a smartphone holder and a ‘My Connect Box’ to hook up devices to the vehicle
It’s available in a ‘Palmeira’ yellow colour pack
Citroën is also offering a modular cargo kit to simplify the expansion of storage space
It can separate the driver and passenger areas as well as creating a loading surface from the passenger seat
which Citroën states adds up to 340 litres of storage for things like parcel deliveries
this can be folded up and stored when it’s not required – restoring access to the both seats

ALASKAN Bush People star Noah Brown has claimed his mom
and his sister Rain are abusing meth in a desperate welfare check request to authorities
Rain, 22, was arrested and charged with burglary
malicious mischief and criminal trespassing on Friday
as he was hit with burglary and malicious mischief charges
Sun can exclusively reveal that just days before their arrest
her brother Noah called police to conduct a welfare check on his mom Amora "Ami" Brown and his sister Rain
whose real name is Merry Christmas Raindrop
2025 was included in court papers for the burglary investigation
weeks before they were ultimately arrested on April 11
“Noah Brown reported the following: Mother is ‘couch surfing’ with her daughter Brown
Merry (Rain) and daughter’s aggressive boyfriend Lorton
Noah continued to claim his mother is “off her meds” and that her condition is "deteriorating."
Ami was hospitalized in February for chest pain.
The court papers continued, “Merry is not allowing her to take her medications. Lorton also has guns and is not supposed to have them.”
“I advised Noah that I attempted to contact his mother (Amora Brown.) I also explained to Noah that I had discovered that Amora might be with his sister Merry
“Noah suggested that Merry struggles to keep up with taking her medication and thinks that anybody who tries to force her to take it is the devil
Noah continued to explain that Josiah is known to always be armed
Noah explained that Merry had also taken a pistol from him
Noah didn’t want to list it as stolen but wanted me to be cautious when attempting to contact her
Noah advised me that his mother and Merry refer to Josiah Lorton as the next ‘Messiah,’ which extremely worried Noah.”
The officer then spoke to a man who met Josiah and Merry on a job site
He offered to let the couple stay at his home because they appeared to be living out of her car
“I asked him if he had noticed anything that Josiah and Merry might have had with them
He advised that Josiah and Merry had a large ‘diaper bag’ full of pills,” the report read
Rain and Josiah remained behind bars until their court date on April 14
Rain spoke out on Instagram after she was released from jail
"It hurts my heart that my rainbows would choose to believe the lies..
"Instead of maybe thinking 'oh no who is saying this about Rain?' Not 'wow what a waste' it deeply hurts my heart
With all this said I hope y’all will stick around to hear my side of the story
This isn’t the first time Rain has been accused of abusing meth
Noah and his now-estranged wife Rhain filed a restraining order against Rain on August 5
claiming she committed "unlawful harassment."
In Noah’s Declaration in Support of Motion for Ex Parte Restraining Order
he accused Rain of "using cocaine and meth and consuming alcohol."
my mother went to visit Respondent and my mother was offered cocaine for her migraine/headache she was experiencing."
Noah explained of an incident that occurred during filming for the Discovery series
"We were in the elevator and [Rain] said something along the lines of ‘my life would be so much easier if you were dead
I was helping the family move horses up to NorthStar ranch
and because Raindrop and Snowbird wouldn’t listen to me on how to properly transport the animals
one of the horses fell in the trailer and couldn’t get back up on her own
“When I was telling them what we needed to do to help the horse stand
I would rather the horse die than listen to you
Now go wait in your truck or I will get my gun right now!’
"I waited at my truck the rest of the time
I found out the next day that the horse died.”
Noah explained his family has been a “victim” of “unlawful harassment” since his Rhain was introduced to the family on August 15
A temporary order was denied without a court hearing because of “no basis.”
“The petition lacks sufficient information and is unsupported by a properly [submitted] declaration
“Petition is essentially blank with references to ‘see declaration of Noah Brown.’
allegations pertain to incidents that are too remote in time to warrant issuance of a TRO without notice to the respondent
“There must be sufficient information to support the petition for a TRO to issue or for a hearing to be set.”
Noah and Rhain have not re-filed the request
Sun was unable to contact Rain regarding the restraining order request
Days after the Petition for Order of Protection request was filed with the court
“How come in a world so harsh it is praised more to be fake [than] it is to be real
Why do I have to pretend I don’t know what the F word is
“Many of you have watched me grow up from a very young child into the strong capable woman I am today
who quite frankly doesn’t give a flying F#€!< about what anyone thinks of me
"If that sentence offended you and you asked yourself ‘What happened to her?!’ Keep asking that question
“But as you go to type your mean comment about what I have to say remember this: What would you do if when you were yourself the world told you ‘you’re not acting like yourself!’ Who would you listen to
Have a blessed day everyone… God and Jesus bless and keep you in his everlasting light.”
Rain also revealed she married her boyfriend Josiah
Alaskan Bush People fans have followed the Brown family for 14 seasons on Discovery
Billy and Ami married in 1979 and welcomed seven children together
-Bear Brown - separated from Raiven and father to River, Cove and Everest
-Gabe Brown - married to Raquell and father to Sophia and a second daughter
The U.S. Sun previously reported Alaskan Bush People was canceled after 14 seasons
The show aired on Discovery from 2014 to 2022
The cancellation came after patriarch Billy’s business partner, Robert Maughon, filed a breach of contract lawsuit against the late star’s estate and business
just two months after he died in February 2021
Billy's wife, Amora “Ami” Brown
is the executor of the estate and a defendant in the case
“Testimony acknowledging that the show ‘Alaskan Bush People’ ultimately had 14 seasons
with the last season being filmed in 2022.”
Alaskan Bush People is referred to in the past tense
“These breaches occurred despite the significant profits generated by [Alaskan Wilderness Family Productions]
particularly through the television series ‘Alaskan Bush People’ which was featured on the Discovery Channel network.”
Alaskan Bush People is not listed as one of the company's “properties," as shows from Naked and Afraid to Gold Rush are included
The network hasn't posted an update on the series since September 2022
A rep for Discovery and Ami did not respond to The U.S
The lawsuit remains ongoing and Ami has denied the contract claims in an effort to protect her late husband's estate
The family has fallen apart after Billy's death in 2021
announced their split after being on and off for years

anthropomorphic qualities of the tiny machine
Now it’s gone one step further with the introduction of the Ami Buggy
The company has sold over 75,000 Amis since its introduction five years ago, helped by many countries having a rather more laissez faire approach to the age you have to be to drive one – in France
along with a burgeoning owner’s cult
an ‘acid-tinted version’ that adds yellow-tinted trim and accessories
additional stickers and the addition of the official Ami dashboard mascot
The Ami Buggy’s key feature is the absence of conventional doors and side windows
replaced with a simple guard rail for an invigorating open-air experience and supported with optional zip up door covers
A roll-back canvas roof adds even more airtime
Although the Ami is somewhat compromised by range and speed – and that hasn’t really changed with the new edition of the car – there’s still plenty of delight to be had in both the design and driving experience
The key shifts in the new model are the elevated positioning of the twin headlights
The dimensions stay the same (2.41m long and capable of turning in 7.2m) and in addition to the availability of the Buggy derivative there’s also the option of the Cargo kit
which replaces the passenger seat with more space for luggage and/or light goods
there’s an Ami for All model which is designed for people with reduced mobility

New details regarding the March arrest of Alaskan Bush People star Rain Brown and her husband, Josiah Lorton, reveal that the couple allegedly stole more than $170,000 in cash
wine and gold coins from a family member of Josiah
As The Ashley told you last month, the 22-year-old former reality star was arrested in Okanogan, Washington
and charged with burglary in the first degree
malicious mischief in the first degree and criminal trespassing in the second degree
except for the criminal trespassing charge
The list of allegedly stolen items includes $75,000 in cash, $85,000 in gold coins, $8,000 in wine and champagne, a pistol valued at $2,500, a revolver valued at $650, a second pistol valued at $450 and a bong for marijuana valued at $250. Jason also noted that there was damaged glass and a broken generator on his property; he valued the alleged “vandalism” at $5,000.
Jason claimed that a neighbor of his has video footage of Josiah and Rain at the residence where the allegedly burglary occurred. He also informed police that his nephew was the only person with whom he had shared the location of the missing valuables and that he feared Josiah was only at his property to steal the items.
“Jason went on to explain that even though he does not have a positive opinion of [Rain], he believes that even she would not be capable of stealing from him unless Josiah told her about the location of said valuables,” the report stated.
As The Ashley previously told you, Rain took to social media last month seemingly proclaiming her innocence in the aftermath of her arrest.
“It hurts my heart that my rainbows would choose to believe the lies that my old manager who stole $43,000 from me and abused me instead of maybe thinking
‘Oh no who is saying this about Rain?’ Not ‘Wow what a waste,’” she wrote
This is not the only unsavory thing that Rain and Josiah have recently been accused of. Last month, Rain’s older brother Noah called the police to ask for a welfare check on Rain and their mother, Ami
who has reportedly been living with Rain and Josiah
Noah told cops he had heard that Ami was now taking meth given to her by Josiah and Rain
He went on to claim that Ami, who was hospitalized in February and placed in a medically induced coma
Noah alleged that his mother wasn’t taking her medication because Rain “is not allowing her” to do so
A post shared by Amora L. Brown (@amibrownwolfpackmama)
He also claimed that Rain’s husband was in possession of guns
which he is allegedly not permitted to own.
Police reportedly contacted Noah on April 8 to notify him that there had been an attempt to contact Ami and that Ami “might be” with Rain and Josiah
Noah claimed that Rain “struggles to keep up with taking her medication and thinks that anybody who tries to force her to take it is the devil.”
“Noah continued to explain that Josiah is known to always be armed,” the police officer wrote in the court documents
Noah advised me that his mother and [Rain] refer to Josiah Lorton as the next ‘Messiah,’ which extremely worried Noah.”
Noah also accused Rain of stealing a pistol from him.
An officer attempted to do the welfare check on Ami; however
he was only able to deduce that Ami “might be” with Rain and Josiah.

A critical security vulnerability has been disclosed in AMI's MegaRAC Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) software that could allow an attacker to bypass authentication and carry out post-exploitation actions
The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2024-54085
"A local or remote attacker can exploit the vulnerability by accessing the remote management interfaces (Redfish) or the internal host to the BMC interface (Redfish)," firmware security company Eclypsium said in a report shared with The Hacker News
"Exploitation of this vulnerability allows an attacker to remotely control the compromised server
bricking motherboard components (BMC or potentially BIOS/UEFI)
potential server physical damage (over-voltage / bricking)
and indefinite reboot loops that a victim cannot stop."
The vulnerability can further be weaponized to stage disruptive attacks
causing susceptible devices to continually reboot by sending malicious commands
This could then pave the way for indefinite downtime until the devices are re-provisioned
CVE-2024-54085 is the latest in a long list of security shortcomings that have been uncovered in AMI MegaRAC BMCs since December 2022
They have been collectively tracked as BMC&C -
Eclypsium noted that CVE-2024-54085 is similar to CVE-2023-34329 in that it allows for an authentication bypass with a similar impact
The vulnerability has been confirmed to affect the below devices -
AMI has released patches to address the flaw as of March 11
While there is no evidence that the issue has been exploited in the wild
it's essential that downstream users update their systems once OEM vendors incorporate these fixes and release them to their customers
HPE and Lenovo have already released security updates for their products that integrate AMI’s fix for CVE-2024-54085
"Note that patching these vulnerabilities is a non-trivial exercise
requiring device downtime," Eclypsium said
"The vulnerability only affects AMI's BMC software stack
since AMI is at the top of the BIOS supply chain
the downstream impact affects over a dozen manufacturers."

Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed a new type of name confusion attack called whoAMI that allows anyone who publishes an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) with a specific name to gain code execution within the Amazon Web Services (AWS) account
"If executed at scale, this attack could be used to gain access to thousands of accounts," Datadog Security Labs researcher Seth Art said in a report shared with The Hacker News
"The vulnerable pattern can be found in many private and open source code repositories."
the technique is a subset of a supply chain attack that involves publishing a malicious resource and tricking misconfigured software into using it instead of the legitimate counterpart
The attack exploits the fact that anyone can AMI, which refers to a virtual machine image that's used to boot up Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances in AWS, to the community catalog and the fact that developers could omit to mention the "--owners" attribute when searching for one via the ec2:DescribeImages API
the name confusion attack requires the below three conditions to be met when a victim retrieves the AMI ID through the API -
This leads to a scenario where an attacker can create a malicious AMI with a name that matches the pattern specified in the search criteria
resulting in the creation of an EC2 instance using the threat actor's doppelgänger AMI
grants remote code execution (RCE) capabilities on the instance
allowing the threat actors to initiate various post-exploitation actions
All an attacker needs is an AWS account to publish their backdoored AMI to the public Community AMI catalog and opt for a name that matches the AMIs sought by their targets
"It is very similar to a dependency confusion attack
the malicious resource is a software dependency (such as a pip package)
whereas in the whoAMI name confusion attack
the malicious resource is a virtual machine image," Art said
Datadog said roughly 1% of organizations monitored by the company were affected by the whoAMI attack
and that it found public examples of code written in Python
and Bash shell using the vulnerable criteria
Following responsible disclosure on September 16
the issue was addressed by Amazon three days later
AWS told The Hacker News that it did not find any evidence that the technique was abused in the wild
"All AWS services are operating as designed
Based on extensive log analysis and monitoring
our investigation confirmed that the technique described in this research has only been executed by the authorized researchers themselves
with no evidence of usage by any other parties," the company said

The key challenge is ensuring that Auto Scaling groups always launch new instances from the latest
This solution leverages Systems Manager Automation to patch the current “golden” AMI
create a new AMI from the patched instance
and update the AMI ID stored in Parameter Store
Auto Scaling groups can then reference this updated AMI ID parameter to launch new instances from the latest patched AMI
you can establish an automated pipeline to keep your AMIs consistently up-to-date with minimal manual effort
This solution provides a scalable and repeatable approach to maintaining a secure and compliant AWS infrastructure
Solution Overview: The architecture of the solution can be broken down into six steps
Figure 1 – Architecture Diagram for updating AMI ID using SSM and lambda
Note: The IAM roles for automation will be deployed by the AWS Cloudformation template
Wait for the CloudFormation stack to reach the “CREATE_COMPLETE” status
IMPORTANT: The CloudFormation template uses the Amazon Linux 2023 image as an example in the us-east-1 region. To find the AMI ID for this image in another region, please follow these steps
Task 2: Create a Parameter in SSM Parameter Store for the AMI ID
Create a string parameter in Parameter Store that uses the following information:
Figure 2: Create a parameter in SSM parameter store
Task 4: Update the Launch Template for the ASG to point to SSM parameter store
To update a launch template that specifies a parameter for the AMI
Task 5: Create an Automation Runbook Use the following procedure to create and run a runbook that patches the AMI you specified for the latestAmi parameter
the value of latestAmi is updated with the ID of the newly-patched AMI
This approach ensures that new images are automatically made available to different computing environments that use Auto Scaling groups
When you specify aws:ec2:image as the data type for a parameter
Systems Manager doesn’t create the parameter immediately
It instead performs an asynchronous validation operation to ensure that the parameter value meets the formatting requirements for an AMI ID
and that the specified AMI is available in your AWS account
A parameter version number might be generated before the validation operation is complete
The operation might not be complete even if a parameter version number is generated
Optional: Setting up Notifications Based on Parameter Store Events
You can set up notifications to be alerted when a Parameter Store parameter is updated
This can be useful for monitoring changes to the latestAmi parameter and receiving notifications when it is updated with a new AMI ID
you can configure AWS CloudWatch Events to capture Parameter Store events and send notifications to an Amazon SNS topic
Here’s a high-level overview of the process:
You can follow the detailed instructions in the AWS Systems Manager User Guide: Monitoring AWS Systems Manager Parameter Store Events
You can automate and schedule the monitoring process using SSM Maintenance windows to ensure that checks are performed consistently without manual intervention
This setup provides a reliable way to keep track of changes in the Parameter Store
enhancing security and operational visibility
It also enhances security and operational visibility
Cleanup If you decide you no longer want to keep the Lambda and its associated resources
you can go to the CloudFormation section in the AWS Console
select the stack (named during deployment)
All resources will be deleted except for the Lambda function and SSM Parameters
This blog demonstrates how to automatically keep AMIs up-to-date for Auto Scaling groups by leveraging AWS Systems Manager Automation
You can schedule this automation to run routinely using AWS Systems Manager Maintenance Windows
ensuring your infrastructure consistently uses the latest
you can set up an automated workflow to patch the current golden AMI
and update the AMI parameter referenced by your Auto Scaling groups
While this use case focused on patching AMIs
the automation capabilities of AWS Systems Manager can be extended to consistently maintain other aspects of your AWS environment
To learn more about other AWS services and features that integrate
we recommend that you review SSM automations

Metrics details
Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and the myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MI/RI) that typically ensues represent a significant global health burden
accounting for a considerable number of deaths and disabilities
percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is the preferred treatment option for reducing acute ischemic damage to the heart
pathological damage to cardiomyocytes due to MI/RI remains an important target for intervention that affects the long-term prognosis of patients
mitochondrial dysfunction during AMI has been increasingly recognized as a critical factor in cardiomyocyte death
Damaged mitochondria play an active role in the formation of an inflammatory environment by triggering key signaling pathways
including those mediated by cyclic GMP-AMP synthase
NOD-like receptors and Toll-like receptors
This review emphasizes the dual role of mitochondria as both contributors to and regulators of inflammation
The aim is to explore the complex mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction in AMI and its profound impact on immune dysregulation
Specific interventions including mitochondrial-targeted antioxidants
and mitochondrial transplantation therapies have demonstrated efficacy in preclinical AMI models
These pathways contribute to the perpetuation of an inflammatory environment within the infarcted myocardium
which in turn results in further tissue damage and adverse outcomes
By elucidating the mechanisms of activation of these pathways and their downstream effects
we aim to identify potential therapeutic targets that may be employed to reduce inflammation and improve the prognosis of patients with MI
The objective of this paper is to examine the intricate mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction in MI and its profound impact on immune dysregulation
we present promising interventions targeting mitochondria that have demonstrated therapeutic efficacy in preclinical MI models
By gaining a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between mitochondrial integrity and the immune response
we aim to pave the way for the development of novel and effective therapeutic approaches to protect myocardial function and limit myocardial fibrosis after MI/RI
This highlights the potential of this approach as a therapeutic agent for MI
double membrane-bound organelles fundamental to eukaryotic cells
orchestrate cellular energy production and metabolic homeostasis
Their distinctive architectural organization enables the spatial segregation of diverse biochemical pathways critical for cellular processes
Contemporary research has revealed that mitochondria extend beyond their canonical role in ATP generation
serving as central regulators of cellular signaling networks
the efficiency of fatty acid oxidation in mitochondria is crucial for maintaining energy homeostasis and preventing metabolic diseases
The interplay between amino acid metabolism and mitochondrial function is particularly significant in conditions such as cancer
where altered amino acid metabolism can promote tumor growth and survival
mitochondrial dysfunction can lead to impaired amino acid catabolism
contributing to metabolic dysregulation and disease states
This shift highlights the adaptability of cellular metabolism in response to energetic demands and environmental changes
Oxidative stress arises from an imbalance between the production of ROS and the body’s ability to eliminate these harmful compounds
The sources of oxidative stress can be both endogenous and exogenous
Endogenous sources primarily include mitochondrial respiration
leading to the formation of superoxide radicals
such as those involving xanthine oxidase and nitric oxide synthase
Exogenous factors include environmental pollutants
which can exacerbate oxidative stress by increasing ROS levels or depleting antioxidant defenses
and physical inactivity also play a crucial role in modulating oxidative stress levels
oxidative stress injury and fibrosis caused by myocardial ischemia by down-regulating the transforming growth factor-β1 signaling pathway
These findings underscore the central role of mitochondrial dynamics proteins in AMI pathophysiology and their potential as therapeutic targets
Mitochondrial dynamics and the mitophagy pathway
(a) The process of mitochondrial fusion is divided into the fusion of OMM and the fusion of IMM
Fusion of OMM is mediated by MFN1/2 and fusion of IMM is mediated by OPA1
Mitochondrial fusion allows contents to be exchanged between different mitochondria
(b) There are three main steps in mitochondrial division: (1) Drp1 undergoes phosphorylation; (2) Drp1 is recruited from the cytoplasm to the OMM by interacting with Drp1 receptors including fission protein 1 (Fis1)
mitochondrial fission factor (Mff) and mitochondrial dynamics proteins of 49 and 51 kDa (MiD49 and MiD51); (3) Drp1 assembles into a ring-like structure that surrounds and compresses the mitochondria
consuming GTP and generating two separate organelles
One of the most well-defined mechanisms of mitochondrial autophagy is the PINK1/Parkin pathway
One of the most well-defined mechanisms of mitophagy is the PINK1/Parkin pathway
In the event of a loss of ΔΨm or an increase in ROS
Parkin then proceeds to ubiquitinate mitochondrial surface proteins
thereby signaling to the autophagosome for junctional proteins
calcium-binding and coiled-coil domain-containing protein 2 (NDP52)
Reattachment of the ubiquitin chain to microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3) on phagophores plays a role
damaged mitochondria can be eliminated through other autophagic pathways
specifically those that are non-ubiquitin-dependent
Some mitochondrial receptor proteins (or lipids)
such as FUN14 domain containing 1 (FUNDC1)
have the capacity to recruit phagocytic membranes independently of ubiquitin
Mitochondria are wrapped by autophagosomes to form mitochondrial autophagosomes
which eventually fuse with lysosomes to degrade and recycle mitochondria
preventing the subsequent necrosis and progression of AMI
Mechanisms of mitochondrial membrane permeabilization in AMI
The formation of the mitochondrial membrane pore in AMI is a complex process that involves three main mechanisms
The opening of the MPTP represents a pivotal regulatory event during the process of cell necrosis
MPTP is a protein conformer that spans the inner and outer mitochondrial membranes
The PTP is comprised of multiple mitochondrial proteins
These proteins facilitate the opening of the PTP in response to a multitude of stress signals
These proteins facilitate the activation of PTP in response to a variety of stress signals
MOMP is mediated by the Bcl-2 family Bax/Bak
The formation of larger pores by Bax/Bak permits the IMM to protrude into the cytoplasmic lysate
thereby facilitating the release of cyt c and the escape of other mitochondrial matrix contents
GSDMD is a cytoplasmic protein that is cleaved by activated caspase1 to release the active N-terminal fragment of GSDMD
The resulting GSDMD-N rapidly disrupts both the inner and outer mitochondrial membranes
representing a novel pathway for mitochondrial membrane permeabilization
ROS promote the externalization of cardiolipin from IMM to OMM
mediating the formation of mitochondrial pores
This finding suggests that this signaling pathway may be a suitable target for therapeutic intervention in MI patients
which triggers the cGAS/STING-mediated cytoplasmic DNA sensing pathway
It was shown that in the absence of apoptotic caspase activation
leading to slightly elevated levels of IFN-β protein in the blood
This supports the idea that caspases inhibit immune response during cell death
Activation of the cGAS-STING pathway results in the activation of numerous downstream signaling cascades
The principal pathways encompass the activation of NF-κB and IRF3
which facilitate the production of type I interferons and other pro-inflammatory cytokines
thereby ensuring an efficacious immune response to pathogens
mitochondrial damage and the release of mtDNA into the cytoplasm serve as potent activators of the cGAS-STING pathway
The hypoxic and oxidative stress conditions in the infarcted myocardium lead to mPTP opening and the release of mtDNA
triggering the activation of the cGAS-STING pathway
In addition to mediating inflammatory responses
this signaling pathway has been linked to a number of other pathological processes
identifying the chronic activation of downstream STING signaling and targeting the cGAS-STING pathway can effectively control the persistent damage of inflammation on cardiomyocytes after AMI
The persistent activation of the cGAS-STING pathway can lead to detrimental effects
including prolonged inflammation and cardiac dysfunction
Studies have found that excessive production of IFN-I and pro-inflammatory cytokines post-MI correlates with worse cardiac remodeling
The chronic inflammatory state induced by cGAS-STING might ultimately lead to cardiomyocyte death and fibrosis
NLRP3 undergoes a conformational change that facilitates its oligomerization and the recruitment of ASC
which subsequently activates pro-caspase-1
Active caspase-1 is the prototypical inflammatory caspase
which breaks down pro-IL-1β and pro-IL-18 into their active forms
leading to the secretion of these potent pro-inflammatory cytokines
The interplay between NLRP3 activation and apoptosis is further evidenced by findings that inhibiting NLRP3 can significantly reduce apoptotic cell death in models of cardiac stress
targeting the NLRP3 inflammasome may provide a therapeutic avenue to mitigate cardiomyocyte apoptosis and improve cardiac outcomes in various pathological settings
This unique structural and functional configuration underscores TLR9’s role as a key sensor of microbial DNA
TLR9 serves as a critical bridge between innate and adaptive immunity
with its precise regulation being vital for maintaining immune homeostasis and preventing disease
Mitochondria regulate inflammatory pathways during AMI
PRRs recognize PAMPs and DAMPs in microorganisms and regulate inflammatory signaling through three pathways
Mitochondria regulate the cGAS-STING signaling pathway
cGAMP induces conformational changes in STING proteins
which in turn regulates the activity of IRF3 and NF-κB
This then initiates the production of proinflammatory cytokines
which are essential for mounting an effective immune response to the pathogen
Mitochondrial activation of NLRP3 inflammasome
The release of DAMPs such as ROS and mtDNA from injured mitochondria promotes the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome
the NLRP3 protein is first translocated to the mitochondria
where it is redistributed to the Golgi in the form of an oligomeric cage
NLRP3 is translocated to the microtubule-organizing center (MTOC) and reorganized
acquiring the designation of NLRP3 inflammasome
NLRP3 is then separated and defined by three typical components: the NLRP3
Activation of NLRP3 inflammasome results in the activation of pro-caspase-1
which then catabolizes pro-IL-1β and pro-IL-18 into their active forms
Mitochondrial activation of inflammatory pathways via TLR9
mtDNA exhibits structural similarities to bacterial DNA
TLR9 is capable of recognizing unmethylated CpG motifs present in both bacterial and viral DNA
TLR9 undergoes a constitutive change that initiates an intracellular signaling cascade
primarily through a MyD88-dependent pathway
This leads to the activation of various transcription factors (including IRF3 and NF-κB)
Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for developing targeted therapies aimed at mitigating mitochondrial dysfunction and preventing cardiomyocyte death
thereby improving outcomes in patients with AMI
Understanding these signaling pathways will be crucial for developing targeted therapies aimed at mitigating endothelial cell apoptosis and improving outcomes in MI patients
A number of innate immune signaling pathways
including those mediated by the activation of TLRs
have been demonstrated to induce necroptosis
It is primarily induced by the accumulation of copper ions within the cell
which leads to the binding of copper to lipoylated components of the TCA cycle
disrupting mitochondrial function and triggering cell death pathways
The mechanism involves the dysregulation of cellular copper homeostasis
which can result from both exogenous sources
how myocardial oxidative stress affects elevated copper ion levels during myocardial ischemia and the key targets remain to be demonstrated in further studies
Mitochondria are primary sites for ROS generation during cellular respiration
and excessive ROS can lead to mitochondrial dysfunction
including neurodegenerative disorders and cancer
The role of antioxidants in mitigating mitochondrial oxidative stress has garnered significant attention in therapeutic strategies
Recent studies have highlighted the potential of antioxidant therapies in preserving mitochondrial integrity and function
MitoQ exerts its regulatory influence over mitochondrial homeostasis through the mediation of AMPK and its downstream signaling pathways
This provides further evidence of the potential of NAD precursors in enhancing mitochondrial health
thereby offering a novel therapeutic strategy for the treatment of myocardial ischemia
These findings provide a compelling rationale for its clinical use
The administration of necrostatin has been demonstrated to attenuate programmed necrosis in cardiomyocytes by blocking the programmed necrosis signaling pathway
demonstrated that Necrostatin markedly reduced the incidence of MI and diminished the expression level and phosphorylation of RIPK1 and RIPK3 in myocardial tissues
These findings suggest that necrostatin not only inhibits apoptosis but also effectively reduces necrosis of cardiomyocytes
The mechanism of action of CsA included restoration of the MMP and reduction of ROS levels
which attenuated cardiomyocyte injury and apoptosis
apoferritin serves not only as a delivery vehicle
but also as an inhibitor of ferroptosis in ischemic cardiomyocytes
This is achieved by increasing the protein expression of GPX4 and decreasing the levels of unstable ferric ion and lipid peroxides
the utilization of CsA for the management of MI/RI is constrained by its immunosuppressive impact on other normal organs and tissues
CsA exerts a protective effect against MI/RI solely when delivered to the IMM of ischemic cardiomyocytes
SS-31 represents a novel mitochondria-targeting peptide that directs the accumulation of drugs into mitochondria
These effects are attributed to the inhibition of mPTP opening and ROS production
Its distinctive mechanism of action renders it a crucial therapeutic agent for myocardial protection
AMI and lower wall acute transmural myocardial infarction
metformin may potentially act as a risk factor for patients
additional assessment of the efficacy and safety of metformin in patients with MI will enhance our comprehension of the clinical viability of metformin as a therapeutic option
the issue of biomarker gaps remains unresolved
The prevailing models are currently incapable of monitoring mitochondrial repair in real time due to an absence of real-time biomarkers
Although serum mtDNA levels have been shown to correlate with injury
they are unable to distinguish between necrosis and mitochondria-driven release
This review emphasizes mitochondrial dysfunction as a key therapeutic target that has the potential to transform the management of AMI beyond traditional reperfusion strategies
Public health programs that focus on mitochondrial health have the potential to reduce the incidence of AMI
These programs may include the promotion of diets rich in antioxidants (e.g.
regular exercise to enhance mitochondrial biogenesis
and smoking cessation to reduce oxidative stress
the early detection of biomarkers of mitochondrial damage (e.g
circulating mtDNA) can enable preemptive intervention in at-risk populations
It is also recommended that dietary interventions be considered in order to promote a diet rich in antioxidants (e.g
rosin tannins) with a view to reducing baseline oxidative stress
By linking laboratory-to-bedside innovation with population-level prevention
this study highlights the potential to transform global cardiovascular care
Mitochondria-mediated inflammatory responses are of pivotal importance in the pathophysiology of MI
A number of factors contribute to mitochondrial damage during AMI
including mechanisms such as the production of RNS/ROS
and mitochondrial membrane permeabilization
Damaged mitochondria have been observed to promote immune responses through the cGAS-STING pathway
Each pathway contributes to the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and the recruitment of immune cells
Targeting different pathways of damage to mitochondria
preclinical studies have identified a number of promising agents targeting mitochondria that have been shown to be effective in reducing inflammation and mortality in AMI models
Promote combination therapy centered on SGLT2i (such as MitoQ synergistic intervention)
and simultaneously correct energy metabolism disorders
oxidative stress and programmed cell death pathways

Columbia Public Schools requested clarification on how AMI hours are interpreted
Columbia Public Schools has requested clarification from the state about how hours of alternative methods of instruction are interpreted
under the current Department of Elementary and Secondary Education interpretation of AMI hours
used its last day of AMI classes Tuesday and will use a traditional snow day Wednesday
CPS spokesperson Michelle Baumstark said two bills moving through the Missouri legislature could provide some positive changes for school districts regarding AMI
have cleared House committees and could be placed on the calendar in the coming days
The changes made in these bills would allow for days missed due to inclement weather to be counted toward the 169 days required to be eligible for a bump in state aid
Baumstark said in an email that existing policy can force districts to weigh student safety with state funding when considering whether to call off school during a winter storm
House Bill 368
a standalone version of the calendar language in HB 607
is being heard on Wednesday in the House Elementary and Secondary Education Committee
Have the latest local news delivered every morning to start your day informed
which stands for alternative methods of instruction
is a remote learning model that allows school districts to count students present on snow days
Students choose from a list of learning activities to do at home on AMI days
According to a news release from Columbia Public Schools
AMI does not include the delivery of new content
AMI focuses on review and study of material already taught and enrichment opportunities for students
Computers and the internet are not required to complete AMI activities
The district implemented AMI days into district protocol for the 2024-25 school year after a new state law required certain school districts to have at least 169 days of school and 1,044 hours of instruction

— The Drift-In AMI in Bradenton Beach celebrated its grand reopening Friday after being closed for six months because of damage caused by Hurricane Helene
It’s a bar that’s been on Anna Maria Island for 100 years
It’s made a comeback after being closed for six months because of damage from last year’s hurricanes
bartender Heather McNeal is making up for lost time
But it was a family she hadn’t seen in six months
After Hurricane Helene’s storm surge forced the Drift-In to shut down
we had people lined up down Bridge Street when we opened this morning,” McNeal said
The establishment is also a piece of history on the island
the bar is celebrating its 100th year of service
Everything has been made brand new," McNeal said
"This building’s been here since 1925
so there were a lot of upgrades to be made."
McNeal has worked at the Drift-In for years
she said it wasn’t as simple as just finding another job
“Nobody really took me serious about needing employment," she said
you’re going back to work at the Drift?’ But we had no idea when we’d be open
Some friends in town gave me work where they had something available to do
But every day was like holding tight."
but now members of the staff say they are ready to bounce back and lean on each other to get back to normal

the Netanyahu government has doubled down on its efforts to consolidate its control and ramp up its military operations in Gaza and Lebanon
Following the firing of the former director of Shin Bet
an unprecedented decision in Israel’s history
the government has begun the more complicated process of terminating the attorney general
as well as changing the process by which judges are appointed
A ferocious military operation in Gaza that has taken a terrible toll on Palestinian civilians and recent anti-Hamas demonstrations have resulted in renewed negotiations on a new hostage release for ceasefire agreement
And for the first time since the Israeli-Hezbollah ceasefire agreement in November 2024
rockets launched against northern Israel triggered response strikes in the Beirut suburbs
What does the future hold for Gaza and any longer-term agreement
Will the Netanyahu government succeed in what appears to be a renewal of the 2023 effort to increase its power and undermine Israel’s judiciary
What about any hopes for a regional peace accord encompassing Palestinians and Saudi Arabia
Join Aaron David Miller as he engages former Shin Bet director Ami Ayalon on these and other issues on the next Carnegie Connects
Note: This is a rush transcript and may contain errors
a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and welcome to Carnegie Connects
a series of conversations about issues of critical importance to America and to the world
I'm pleased and honored to welcome back to the program Ami Ayalon
Admiral Retired Ami Ayalon is a former director of the Israeli Security Agency known as Shin Bet
He's a former commander as well of Israel's Navy
he was the first Shin Bet director hired from outside of the organization
He also served as a cabinet minister and a member of the Knesset
He's also one of the best analysts of Middle East and
and a man of extraordinary integrity and courage
And at the risk of embarrassing him further
many of the leadership qualities that is critically important to leading the state of Israel today
We should stop here because it couldn't be better
I know there are no rewind buttons on history
but I want to ask you two questions about October 7th
having served under three Israeli prime ministers
having been responsible for the security of the people of Israel
what are the major takeaways with respect to why Israel failed
both from an intelligence point of view and operational point of view to anticipate
and then to respond promptly to Hamas' attacks on October 7th
I think that it is beyond the name of the Prime Minister
that we are asking ourselves during the last almost two years or one year and a half
I'll start with the short and it will be enough
My answer is that Socrates was not sitting in the general staff room before the 7th of October
but the questions were so tough up to the point in which the leaders of Athens decided that the young people in the street
they have some doubts when it comes to the leadership and they decided to execute him
Plato describe this scenario in a beautiful way
"I cannot because this is my nature." Now
we have to understand that in a military organization
one is hierarchical organization and second obedience is a supreme value
You see it in every military organization in a place in which people do not have the courage
they have the courage to go to the battlefield
but they're afraid to ask questions and to challenge conventions
Until we shall be able to change the genetic structure of every military organization
we shouldn't be surprised when we just do not see
We do not see the reality the way we understand it today
the greatest intelligence failure since October 6
Was it a failure to imagine Hamas' intentions and its capabilities
was an assumption that we can control the level of flames
the level of violence when it comes to Hamas
Netanyahu saw Hamas as an asset because for him
Hamas was an asset because as long as Hamas controlled Gaza and Palestinian authority control West Bank
so nobody from the international community can demand a negotiation
They do not have even a unified leadership
but it was not intelligence failure to see this scenario
It was just the refusal to accept that this will be the scenario
but they will not do it because they are afraid to lose their leadership position in Gaza
We measure hardware and they measure software
When we discussed it in our previous meeting
so we did not understand that when we see the future struggle or engagement
we measure it in military terms and they measure it in totally different ..
They are looking for the support of the street and in a way they want this military battle because before the 7th of October
35% in the Palestinian Street and today it's 80%
their support level of support between 70 to 80%
I've wrestled with this one myself since October 7th
Could October 7th have played out any differently if Israel had had a different prime minister
and Yitzhak Rabin into the prime ministry on that fateful day
I'll get right to the core issue because I know we're going to talk about it
Do you think that a different prime minister might've responded over the last 18 months differently than the way Benjamin Netanyahu responded
the way I understand Rabin and Barak and everybody
every person when he is in power for too long
during his first four or eight years would behave differently
But he did not listen to what they told him before the war
It was an open debate and this was not the case in the case of Netanyahu
Everybody who presented him a different idea
I think that they were much more pragmatic
it's not only that he's losing his pragmatic views
when he tried to nominate a new director of Shin Bet
but he didn't have the political power because he is trapped in the coalition that he created
So in addition to too many years in power and the coalitions that he created
just one question about the prosecution of the war
prosecuting a war where your adversary embeds its assets around
and co-locates them among civilian populations is a very tough war to fight
was there any way to avoid ,in your judgment
the exponential rise of Palestinian civilian deaths and the humanitarian catastrophe that played out in Gaza
from the misery inflicted upon the Palestinian people by the Israeli military in an effort to gain support in the international community
I think that during the first four or five months until January or February '24
which is to use his people as a human shield in order to bring our soldiers into the cities and to kill as many civilians as we can in order to present us
it is a totally different war for the wars of the 20th century and even from the war in Afghanistan and Iraq because Gaza is a totally different type of battlefield
But we achieve most of our military goals after
this war is a war without any political goal
I know exactly what happens to a war without a political goal
The war becomes the end and not the meaning
The whole concept of war is to use violence
But if as long as we are doing it for self-defense
But now it is not a just war because there is
not even a military goal for this military intervention or war
It's not that we forgot to design or to present a political goal because this is exactly what our prime minister wants
He understand that the moment that this war will end
Because you have to remember before we went back to the war months ago
what was the conditions of the extreme right of this coalition
to fire the general attorney and to go back to war
This is exactly the decisions that this government made in order to bring them back to the coalition
And 70% of the people of Israel believe that all the decisions
the decision of this government is not in order to secure Israel and to create a better reality for the state of Israel and its people
to the present and let's move to the present now and focus on politics
I want to put up on the screen so everyone can see it
an ad that ran in two large Israeli dailies
but a group of 24 former intelligence security and military officials
the 24 of you meet every several weeks to talk about the state and fate of the country
I want to just summarize what's on the screen in Hebrew
"Netanyahu's conduct poses a clear and immediate danger to Israel's security and future as a Jewish democratic state
recognizing that Netanyahu conduct casts serious doubt on his fitness to fulfill the role of prime minister
We also call for the intensification of the civil struggle
for the immediate return of hostages within the framework of a ceasefire agreement
the establishment of a state commission of inquiry
upholding the high courts of justice decision with regard to conscription into the IDF
and setting an agreed upon date for elections in which the people will have their say." It's signed by past police commissioners
at least one of them was a prime minister and two of them defense ministers
that the military security and intelligence elites featured in this ad and who've been working together are playing such a pivotal role in the opposition to this Israeli government
hoping to change the government and create a different pathway for a different future for Israel
Aside from the fact that we could never put hundreds of thousands of Americans out in the streets week after week after week
campaigning for a relatively unified vision of what America is all about
you were able to do that during the judicial reform
We have a pretty bright line that separates civilian and military authority
There was a letter published by a number of former secretaries of defense in opposition to the current administration and some of its policies
but that's nothing like what former military security and intelligence elites in Israel are doing with respect to oppositions and even civil disobedience
How do you explain it because I think it speaks volumes about the nature of the opposition in Israel and prospects for its success
but I'll try to explain it from my personal point of view
Israel is a totally different kind of society
We have to remind ourselves that our military is of peoples
one of the laws that we are demanding to pass is to make sure that the Haredim
But still Israel is based on the concept that this state belong to the people and every person
every citizen should not only do something for each country
but to serve in the military and to be ready to sacrifice his life in order to secure the state
people cannot avoid the fact that these groups that you just mentioned
I think that when we summarize all our experience
it is about between 8 to 900 years of military service
So it means something for the people of Israel when we say that this war should stop because it is not a just war
this war will bring to the end of the state of Israel as a Jewish democracy
We are endangering our security if we shall not stop this war
but the identity of the security of the state of Israel
This is why what we say is not exactly as if people will see us only as civilians
I believe that if you will try to see it in America
which usually it's not wars between states
I was optimistic enough or pessimistic enough to say that this war will over because I thought that Russia will conquer Ukraine
I don't know whether it'll take six
"The real war will start only when Russia will conquer Ukraine." We saw it in Iraq
Bush declared victory and the real war started only later in Iraq and Afghanistan
are wars between a state and a terror organization
I think that the military commanders are the only one who understand the limits of the use of military power
People who do not serve in the battlefield do not see it and politicians refuse to see it
people who never serve in the battlefield cannot understand it
but politicians understand it and they refuse to see it because they need the war in order to be elected
It's a crazy reality that was created during the 21 century
It's a combination of the global technology of the media and the internet
when we are afraid we prefer security on rights
This is why in time of war we elect leaders who know how to kill the enemies
We do not elect leaders who promise us a better education
they will not stop the war because the war enables it to stay in power
You have a peculiar and unique situation which existed in no other Israeli government where the prime minister of Israel is on trial
almost five years and counting for bribery
fraud and breach of trust in a Jerusalem district court
presumably means either the possibility of a conviction
but he was convicted of one of the charges leveled against the prime minister
14 to 15 months in prison or a plea agreement that would mean the end of the prime minister's career
But you clearly believe that the struggle now
for the identity of the state of Israel is an existential one
How do you propose to get from where we are now ..
2023 saw an amazing demonstration of people power
where in a country just shy of 10 million people
if you deduct even the 2 million Palestinian citizens of Israel
wouldn't have expected to be out in the streets protesting
it is not only because this war has no political goal and lead us to nowhere to lose our security and identity
the figures of the people who took to the streets doubled
You have to understand that I have three sons
and two of my grandchildren are serving in the military
you do not go to the street because the balance between the domestic threat
and the ways they are trying to destroy our democracy
People who comes back during weekends from Gaza will not go to the streets
it lasted about more than three weeks and we lost 2,700 people in less than three weeks
one more reason for the prime Minister to go on with this war
he knows that the moment that this war will end
But I want to explain something about the way this conflict
the domestic conflict is perceived in Israel
and I'm trying to explain it in maritime language
but the problem is that there is a multifocal storm because I can describe what we see today in Israel as a constitutional crisis or as an identity crisis
from the day Israel was created because we do not have constitution
Our Judaism did not create a culture of democracy
Our coalition system create a reality in which our legislative branch
Because once you have majority in…so the executive branch controlled the legislative branch and the legislative branch was destroyed by the government
what we see today from the constitutional point of view is that the struggle of today is to destroy the judiciary because the legal system
it's the only way to stop or to limit the power of the government
Israel is only democracy in the Middle East." We have to ask
"Are we really still a democracy?" But what do we mean when we say a Jewish democracy
"Why am I Jewish?" I'm a member of the Jewish people
but my Jewish identity is not the concept of Kahane or Rabbi Kahane or Smotrich or Beville
that their Jewish identity is Jewish supremacy and racism
I want to believe that we believe in a totally different aspect of Jewish identity
I am very proud every time when I meet somebody who do not understand it
that in time in which thousands of years ago when kings used to say that there are gods
but everybody was created in the image of God." This simple concept was the beginning of the liberal democracy of today
I'm very proud to see the Jewish aspect of every liberal democratic constitution
You can see it in the American constitution or in any other liberal constitution
This is a totally different type of Jewish or Jewishness or when we say democracy
Whether it is a dictatorship of the majority
the way many people in Israel believe or whether it is a democracy that preserve and protect civil and minority rights
we do not agree on what is the meaning of it
What we see today is the rifts between the Israeli tribes are deeper and wider every day
I think that makes the problem just even more difficult to resolve because what you're describing is a political system that depends largely on Knesset arithmetic
60 plus 8 affords a government the capacity to govern
the notion that until you have a mass mobilization where political elites
and until you can mobilize hundreds of thousands of people in the streets day after day after day
But you have argued that civil disobedience
as we watch the next several months play out
The Israeli Supreme Court is hearing petitions on the firing of one of your successors
where a president may well decide to ignore the rulings of the federal judiciary or is ignoring now
is any of this possible to play out in the weeks ahead
I know that some people that are listening to us now probably will smile
I'm optimistic because the way I understand history
in every crisis or a crisis is the beginning of a new world and in every crisis there is an opportunity
But I think that what we have to do now is
to recognize the intensity and the magnitude of the threat
of the danger that we are facing and to prioritize
To prioritize the threats because we have all the techniques
the threat to our future and to our security
the internal threat because we were not prepared
We did not realize that this scenario will come
once we convince the Israeli people that in order to maintain our security and our identity
on the occupation and our relations with the Palestinians
we have to unite from on the base of what we see in the polls
we have to demand to return the hostages and to demand immediate ceasefire agreement
we have to establish a state commission of inquiry because it drive people crazy when people who are responsible refuse to present their mistakes and to leave their positions
we have to demand the law of conscription and to demand an agreed date of election
we have to understand we shall not be able to do it alone
"Nobody will save us from ourselves." When you were in the American administration
"We cannot want agreement between you and Palestinians more than you want." So yeah
This is why we have to understand that without the support and the assistance of the Jewish communities outside and the international community
especially when I meet Jewish leaders to tell them
It's the only country in the world that belong to people who are not its citizens." Israel is a country of the Jewish people and you care about Israel
It is your duty to tell us what you see and to tell us that we are heading to the wrong direction
my optimism comes from the simple fact it is not a original conflict anymore
I think that it is obvious that it'll shape world economy and it will shape world stability
This is why I think that every political leader in Europe
understand that it is his political interest to try to achieve stability in the Middle East
It is to take the regional coalition that was created by Biden and to let Trump and other leaders
although I am not sure that I understand your president
I think that he has the power to execute the vision of Biden
I'm not sure that this will be what we shall see in 20 years from now
and maybe this is too simplistic of an antidote
"Men make history but rarely is they please." The reality is
when you've seen breakthroughs in the area of conflict
in the conflict zone between Israel and the states and entities with which Israel shares contiguous borders
it was a result of leaders who believed they were acting
not just for their immediate political gain
but for the future benefit and securities of their peoples
in his first incarnation before Rabin's murder or King Hussein or Nelson Mandela and De Klerk
Without leaders who are masters of their politics
it's hard to imagine any external savior rushing to rescue Israelis and Palestinians
Which is why our conversation and the way in which you process problems
and the honesty that you bring to this conversation is exactly the kinds of qualities that are required on both the Israeli and Palestinian
you cannot see what is in front of us for good or for ill
I was listening to what President Trump said yesterday
and everybody listened to the same words but understand it differently
he brought Netanyahu from Budapest to tell him first
I prefer a deal." So he adopted some of Obama's ideas
I want to end this war and to bring the hostages back." This is what I heard from his speech and all the rest probably said something I didn't listen
All the best to you and your family and stay safe

Utilities can shape the smart grid future by enabling the technical foundation for Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) 2.0
As the electric distribution sector evolves
smart meters have become a focal point for utility technology modernization
Early smart meter implementations were largely successful in replacing legacy automated meter reading (AMR) systems
As Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) technology has developed
advancements in meter and IT capabilities have led utilities to pursue more ambitious use cases in their AMI transformation programs
The pursuit of these advancements has introduced new challenges for utilities
in standing up the technical foundations needed to enable new AMI technologies
While core AMI functionality continues to be implemented at scale across the US
more advanced AMI use cases have sometimes struggled to live up to their potential of improving operational efficiency and meeting customer expectations
EY Digital Grid helps power companies digitize their grids for a resilient
With advanced IT infrastructure and data analytics becoming paramount for the success of AMI 2.0
robust technical architecture and planning have become increasingly important in enabling the promise of AMI technology
AMI 2.0 programs need a new IT and customer-focused transformation paradigm
from business case ideation to implementation
This white paper will discuss the foundational components needed to enable AMI 2.0
These components aim to establish a technical foundation that supports advanced AMI use cases and leads to increased customer satisfaction
interoperability among utility business capabilities and operational efficiency
Utilities seek to pursue critical AMI 2.0 outcomes
and improved customer technology adoption by focusing on IT strategy as an enabler to successful grid modernization
The advent of AMI 2.0 technology has enabled a new era for utilities
enhanced customer interaction with the grid and modernized power grid applications
early and recent AMI implementations have fallen short of these ambitious goals
coupled with the evolution of the workforce to effectively support these advancements
an AMI 2.0 era brings new advanced capabilities for AMI
positioning it as a critical component for broader grid modernization efforts
Electric meters have evolved into sophisticated devices that enable utilities to modernize operations and foster innovation
The rise of distributed energy resources (DERs)
distributed intelligence “at the edge,” and increased customer demands for energy information have accelerated the need for utilities to evolve and enable these use cases
As many utilities now seek funding for AMI 2.0
they face growing demands from regulators and ratepayers to justify the substantial costs involved in pursuing these upgrades
To capitalize on the promises of AMI 2.0 technology and successfully execute on digital transformation
utilities must lay a robust technical foundation to support advanced AMI use cases that will enhance customer satisfaction
increase interoperability among utility business capabilities and improve operational efficiency
utilities must acknowledge insights and lessons learned from previous AMI implementations
Let’s look at where early and recent AMI implementations fell short and how a new approach to AMI 2.0 programs can help address these challenges
The first generation of smart meter implementations were largely focused on remote reads
remote disconnect and integration with outage management
While many utilities also implemented customer-focused programs related to online billing presentment and usage alerts
challenges in understanding the true nature of customer desires
incentives and barriers to adoption limited some AMI customer benefits
many early and recent adopters of AMI did not anticipate the additional investments in IT infrastructure needed to enable access to data across the enterprise and support AMI use cases
This lack of preparation meant that foundational IT work related to infrastructure
development and testing were often underfunded
the exponential increase in data volumes from AMI meters did not have corresponding data governance plans or appropriate changes to data architecture and master data management
which led to stress on core systems and IT infrastructure during and after implementation
Many utility business functions developed their own “shadow IT” data platforms replicating the same AMI data across the enterprise
This often resulted in project schedule delays
Example: A North American utility spent over $50 million on AMI hardware but only budgeted approximately $1 million for IT infrastructure upgrades
existing IT infrastructure struggled to process the data generated by the new advanced meters
leading to project scope reduction and costly IT workarounds
Lack of performance-based contracts and vendor lock-in further hampered the flexibility and scalability of AMI systems
Contracts with vendors often lacked performance-based incentives and did not account for supply chain issues or limitations in solution capabilities
Internal readiness was another significant challenge
as many utilities were not adequately prepared for the new business-as-usual (BAU) model required to manage and operate the advanced functionalities of AMI
Insufficient socialization of new BAU roles and responsibilities led to infighting and departmental “kingdom preservation” during implementation
personnel and processes were not in place to handle AMI program changes
a lack of AMI system interoperability led to restricted integration of utility capabilities
Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS)
Reliance on single vendors for the entire network and hardware footprint further limited business flexibility
and opportunities for shared utility network infrastructure investments were missed
The inability to integrate various systems and technologies across open standards limited the overall effectiveness and benefits of the AMI rollout
Customer advocacy organizations have highlighted barriers in customer access to real-time energy usage data from advanced meters via Wi-Fi or Zigbee radio signals to the New York State Public Service Commission
While this technology is available on existing meters
the ability for customers to access this data via their HANs has faced challenges and delays in its implementation
With significant advancements in power grid technology
utilities are well-positioned to leverage AMI 2.0 capabilities
Seamless integration with other grid technologies like an advanced distribution management system (ADMS)
and an outage management system (OMS) are paramount to realize the full potential of AMI
The rich waveform data generated by these meters unlocks advanced capabilities like preventive maintenance
paving the way for a more resilient and efficient grid
Before embarking on AMI 2.0 modernization initiatives
utilities should consider aligning themselves around several core goals
AMI 2.0 technology provides utilities with a generational opportunity to invest in data capabilities and become “AI-ready.” To enable the success of AMI 2.0 advanced use cases
AMI implementations need a robust data analytics foundation
This includes putting in place a modernized data architecture
and an AI-ready data governance strategy to support advanced use cases
users across the enterprise require access to curated AMI data sets in a controlled manner
This self-service approach is often realized through a centralized data platform where AMI data can be accessed through a data catalog or data marketplace
Utilities must assess their data initiatives and efforts in AMI 1.0 and allocate sufficient funding in the AMI 2.0 business case stage to define a data and AI strategy and establish a data foundation for the long term
and data integrations to enable speed and innovation in the delivery of AMI use cases
Utilities can help to future-proof their AMI investments by facilitating backward compatibility with existing assets and forward compatibility with emerging power grid technologies such as DERMS and distributed automation and intelligence
This involves preventing vendor lock-in by ensuring any new software and hardware investments can “plug and play” with existing and future assets and adhere to common open network and application compatibility frameworks
Deploying interoperability in the AMI 2.0 implementation can enable modular and distributed resources to share AMI network infrastructure investments and transmit data in standardized formats to facilitate more efficient system monitoring and less reliance on single vendors
One of the main challenges seen in AMI implementations is customer engagement and barriers to adoption of AMI technology
It is therefore crucial that utilities fully understand these challenges and customer perspectives to ensure their inputs are incorporated into AMI 2.0 proposals
This involves engaging ratepayers before formal AMI business case proceedings through customer focus groups
pilots and consultations to address concerns and understand their unique desires and pain points
The business case should clearly articulate tangible customer benefits
demand response programs and opportunities for lower energy costs
By addressing these challenges in the early stages of modernization initiatives
AMI 2.0 implementations can be better positioned to achieve the goals of the smart grid era
a new implementation paradigm is needed to enable the promise of emerging smart grid technologies
Below summarizes the key steps at each stage of the AMI 2.0 implementation journey designed to avoid historic implementation challenges and future-proof utilities for further smart grid innovation
The modernization roadmap starts at the business case
where regulators are applying increased scrutiny to AMI 2.0 proposals
The role of utility regulatory commissions is rapidly evolving
with the difficult task of evaluating ambiguous forward-looking grid modernization investments that don’t fit into the traditional cost-benefit models of legacy AMI deployments
To boost the likelihood of regulatory approval for AMI 2.0 business cases
utilities must engage with customers and wide variety of business stakeholders early in the process — through focus groups
and consultations — to understand their unique desires and pain points
Transparency and detailed planning in regard to the cost/benefit ROI are crucial to gaining regulatory approval
The business case needs to clearly articulate tangible benefits for customers including real-time energy data availability
demand response programs and DER integration
Utilities must also transition from traditional cost-benefit models to more flexible approaches that accommodate future power grid investments
Performance-based ratemaking and contracting are one way for utilities to align vendor interests with outcomes
promoting synergies and adding rewards or penalties based on the achievement of benefits
Balancing meter capital depreciation with the need for modernization
and communicating opportunities for backward compatibility with existing infrastructure are also essential in gaining regulator buy-in
Benefits should be defined in a way that they can be monetized
quantifiable metrics should be established to assess and prove these benefits
The final key to business case success is the facilitation of cross-departmental collaboration
Utilities need to clearly link AMI investments with broader grid modernization goals and opportunities for shared investments in network
Sector leaders should be transparent about the additional investments needed to enable advanced use cases and align ambiguous investments in IT and network infrastructure with specific operational and customer benefits related to AI and data analytics
utilities should have a clear understanding in the business case stage of required investments in the entire IT landscape to achieve the goals of the transformation effort
This includes having a holistic understanding of data and IT infrastructure needs
Utilities can demonstrate this knowledge by conducting cloud FinOps
and data strategy assessments before regulatory proceedings to show the required investments needed to enable the AMI 2.0 solution in its entirety
it’s time to set the foundation for success in your AMI 2.0 implementation
This means establishing the AMI 2.0 program governance plan to implement the new capabilities
processes and skills needed for the new BAU to operate and manage in the smart world
The first step in this process is determining what core Minimum Viable Product (MVP) functionality looks like and building an incremental program plan that avoids "doing too much too fast" and sequences the implementation to address core MVP first
The overall program plan should set the technical foundation for core MVP and advanced use cases before field deployment to ensure implementation success
Organizational change readiness is another critical aspect of the new transformation paradigm
Preventing organizational churn requires driving a business-led Responsible
Informed (RACI) definition and obtaining buy-in from key stakeholders before implementation begins
Conducting a comprehensive review of enterprise architecture and business processes can also help determine new system requirements or process changes needed to enable the new BAU
the successful implementation of AMI 2.0 requires not only technological investment but also the development of the right talent
collaborative ways of working and a culture that fosters innovation
To fully capitalize on the benefits of AMI 2.0
utilities must proactively identify potential capability gaps within their workforce and implement necessary personnel changes to the workforce in concert with the AMI program plan
Establishing the IT systems and data foundations plan is essential for the successful implementation of AMI 2.0
Before embarking on any field asset replacement plans
information systems and technology architecture should be established as a single source of truth to identify integration points and data exchange protocols for the entire AMI solution
By mapping each layer of architecture to relevant smart grid open protocols and standards
and documenting data exchange requirements
you can create an enterprise-wide blueprint for interoperability
IT leaders should leverage the cloud FinOps and data strategy assessments from the business case stage
to build out foundational master data management
and system change plans to set the foundation for both core MVP and advanced use cases
A modernized data governance plan should also be put in place to account for increased data volumes and workloads needed for data analytics use cases
systems and data foundations plans are finalized
IT and systems preparation work should be sequenced before the implementation of core MVP and advanced functionality to ensure technical foundations are in place before field asset replacement
This includes standing up the necessary IT infrastructure and cloud foundations
and establishing data workflows and processing applications
After laying systems foundations for core MVP
the implementation of core functionalities
technical resources should commence advanced IT and systems preparation work to optimize the business case funding runway
and establishing data workflows and processing applications for advanced functionality
Separating systems preparation work for core MVP and advanced use case efforts can focus finite technical resources during the implementation
and avoid churn associated with regular project challenges
The final step is the implementation of advanced functionality
This involves systems implementation of advanced use cases
AI/ML solutions and integrations with other systems such as DERMS and ADMS
it is imperative that any efforts toward advanced functionality have the necessary IT and data foundations in place to enable AMI technology advancements
This comprehensive approach from business case ideation to implementation can ensure that utilities are well-prepared to modernize their operations
and promote innovation in the evolving US power market
utilities can build a robust technical foundation
improve interoperability and deliver tangible benefits to customers
ultimately enabling the transition to AMI 2.0
Before embarking on AMI 2.0 implementation efforts
utilities should focus on the following key steps:
Allocate sufficient funding for foundational IT work related to infrastructure
by putting in place a data strategy that includes a modernized data architecture
Clearly link AMI 2.0 implementation efforts with broader power grid modernization goals and opportunities for shared investments in network
Adopt a customer-focused transformation approach and engage ratepayers on their pain points and desires through focus groups
pilots and consultations to ensure tangible customer benefits are addressed in the AMI implementation
Separate the implementation of core MVP and advanced functionality and build an incremental program plan that avoids “doing too much too fast.” The plan should set the technical foundation for core and advanced use cases before implementation work commences
By learning from past challenges and adopting a novel IT and customer-centric AMI 2.0 implementation paradigm
utilities can successfully implement the next generation of AMI technology
The future of the smart grid depends on it

National Geographic photographer and filmmaker Ami Vitale shares personal stories of war
and innovation as she emphasizes the urgent need for conservation at 6 p.m.
The event is being presented by the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies
73% of the world’s wildlife has vanished
But humans can also be part of the solution by prioritizing conservation efforts and engaging in sustainable practices
“We can protect ecosystems while still fulfilling our own needs
This balance hinges on recognizing the intrinsic value of all living beings and fostering an environment where both humanity and wildlife can thrive together,” Vitale said
Through captivating visual stories captured over two decades
she’ll talk about how pushing boundaries can positively impact our daily lives
Drawing inspiration from both wildlife and people who protect endangered species
she highlights the interconnectedness and underscores how solutions emerge when people prioritize saving nature
“This recurring theme of hope is illuminated in every one of my stories
demonstrating that hope is not only alive but thriving across our planet
The stories are uplifting and show us how collective action is shaping a better future for communities and our planet,” she said. “All of the stories I share show us what it means to be human at our best: compassionate
and determined to protect the vulnerable. The people in these stories urge us to remember that even the smallest kindness can change the world and that it is often in the face of our greatest challenges that human ingenuity and creativity light a path forward.”
One story revolves around a rhino species that recently became functionally extinct; in less than a hundred years
it went from tens of thousands to just two females today
a small group of individuals have banded together and are doing everything they can to save this species
Her photographs and videos act as incredible tools to create awareness and foster a sense of commonality and understanding across cultures
“Research consistently shows that (photographs) make information more memorable
Images play a critical role in highlighting the interconnectedness of individual well-being and environmental health
These stories highlight not only the perils but also the promise — the hope that exists all around us,” she said
she doesn’t shy away from the urgent message that our world is in crisis
“Planet Earth is the only home we have
we have poked some big holes in this shared life raft. This age
and the debt will continue to grow well into the lives of our children. The future of it is in our hands. We cannot afford to feel overwhelmed or hope that someone else will address the problem
Continuous awareness and action are needed; conservation is not a one-day job,” she said
She advocates being conscious of what we consume — both dietary and lifestyle wise
“Companies know that on a crowded planet sustainability equals availability of resources
from the food we consume to the products we purchase
sends a message about our values and priorities
we encourage businesses to adopt environmentally-friendly practices,” she said
“Our future happiness depends on (all of) them
There is room enough for all of us — but only if we hear — truly hear — what others are saying,” she said
Vitale’s journey began in conflict zones
where she witnessed how everything from resource scarcity to climate change intensifies suffering and conflict
Her stories focus on people living on the front lines of war
She is a Royal Photographic Society Honorary Fellow and recipient of the prestigious Lucie Humanitarian Award
She was also named Magazine Photographer of the Year at the International Photographer of the Year awards and is a six-time recipient of the World Press Photo awards
inviting some of the world’s most inspiring environmental photographers to join
It not only raises funds for conservation — over $5 million so far — but also mentors the next generation of global changemakers
Its Student Speaker Program integrates science and curriculum into classrooms and has engaged more than 10,000 students
These initiatives have been featured in global photography festivals and highlighted in media campaigns worldwide
171 articles were published in major media outlets around the world
it will have provided online mentorship in storytelling to 884 visual journalists across 79 countries
we create compelling narratives to drive meaningful action,” she said

As of Friday, Springfield Public Schools had used all six of its Alternative Methods of Instruction or AMI days for preschool and four of the days for kindergarten through grade 12
said there are still unspent AMI days available for K-12 students
"We are able to extend to six days," he said
AMI allows students to learn at home when school is closed for inclement weather
the district is able to count the day out of class as a learning day for attendance purposes
This flexibility is critical because of a change ushered in by Senate Bill 727
It puts districts at risk of reduced state funding if they fall below 169 days
the switch to AMI started with the second day school was canceled
For students in kindergarten and grades 1-12
the AMI switch started with the fourth day school was canceled
districts can count up to 36 hours for AMI

No in-person classes were held this past week
and schools were closed Tuesday through Friday because of heavy snow
Hall said the forecast for the coming week is much better and the district has options
including the possibility of using any remaining AMI days or adjusting the spring calendar
the district could schedule a day after Memorial Day if it exhausts the six AMI days for K-12 and there are more closures needed
"We feel like we're in a good place and have options if we need to make adjustments," he said
