An August ribbon-cutting ceremony brought together Forest Service representatives with those from the Wrangell Cooperative Association
National Forest Foundation and local students who installed livecams at the nearby Anan Wildlife Observatory
tribal administrator for the Wrangell Cooperative Association
offered a tribal welcome and sprinkled tobacco on the ribbon before U.S
The ceremony commemorated a significant moment for their community and a milestone for the Alaska Cabins Project
The Alaska Cabins Project is a partnership between the National Forest Foundation and Forest Service that is building
reconstructing and repairing up to 25 public-use cabins across the state’s national forests
It is made possible by a nearly $14 million investment from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act
with the foundation fundraising an additional $3.7 million
The Anan Bay Cabin is the project’s first cabin to be completed in the Tongass National Forest and second state-wide
“Cabins in the Alaska Region fill an important niche,” said Director of Recreation
who was among those gathered behind the ribbon on the cabin porch
In a state where both national forests tend to be rainy and cool
“There are people happy to hike all day in the pouring rain
they are not always so excited to get into a wet tent.”
Cabins encourage people to get out on their public lands
but how people choose to use these lands has shifted over time
more people want cabins closer to communities—on the road system
close to a trail or a short distance on protected waters.”
National Forest Foundation President and CEO Mary Mitsos was among those who traveled to Anan for the ceremony
Mitsos said that the shifting demand from public land users is integrated into the broader strategy for the Alaska Cabins Project
She added that this includes constructing new cabins with accessibility in mind
In addition to fundraising to help pay for the construction of new cabins
the National Forest Foundation contracts with builders to construct the cabins and works with agency staff to ensure the cabins are built to specifications
Before its encounter with the fallen spruce
the former Anan Bay Cabin had been popular with the local community and visitors
Its proximity to Wrangell as well as the Anan Wildlife Observatory made it a good fit for the broader strategy of the Alaska Cabins Project and a top priority
The Anan Bay Cabin was among the first in line for reconstruction
but another factor put it on the fast track to completion—it would be one of the first to use a new
King explained that the ready-to-use layout may save time throughout the process
engineers tailor the standard layout to local snow load
“If a window breaks and you know it is part of the standard cabin package
you know the size and might already have an extra one on the shelf.”
The Anan Bay Cabin is now open for reservations
This fast-tracked prototype was just one of the projects underway at Anan in 2024
participants took a short boat ride to the Anan Wildlife Observatory to experience other recent additions--a new viewing platform with a spiral staircase
and nature livecams installed by Wrangell High School students
"The ribbon cutting was a small celebration that represented much bigger things,” reflected Wrangell District Ranger Tory Houser
“It represented the beginning of the Alaska Cabins Project implementation and an ever-strengthening relationship with tribes
It was just the tip of the iceberg.”
Anan Yaeesh is a 37-year-old Palestinian activist from Tulkarem in the West Bank of occupied Palestine
Active in the liberation movement during the Second
he was imprisoned for 4 years in Zionist prisons and seriously injured after an ambush by colonial special forces in 2006
he left Palestine for Norway before settling in Italy in 2017 and obtaining a residence permit there in 2019
he was arrested by the Italian police in the city of L’Aquila
then transferred to detention in the high-security prison of Terni for alleged collaboration with the Tulkarem Brigades
an organization linked to the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades (one of the armed groups of Fatah
that continue to uphold Palestinian liberation rather than “security coordination” with the occupier.)
activists and people in solidarity with the Palestinian people and their resistance to support Anan Yaeesh through actions
Lebanese communist and Palestinian resistance fighter imprisoned in France since 1984 although he has been eligible for release since 1999
Let’s make this date a broad mobilization
calling for the release of Georges Abdallah
the Filton 18 and all our comrades incarcerated in imperialist
for their participation in or support for the resistance of the Palestinian people
Below we share with you Anan Yaeesh’s statement from Wednesday
during the preliminary hearing for his trial
I wish to begin by greeting the Court and all present
I would like to ask the honorable judge to grant me the minimum human right of respect toward my country
by observing a minute of silence for the souls of the children
I wish to affirm my confidence in the Italian judicial system and recognize its legitimacy
I object to being tried in Italy because I am Palestinian and have not committed any crime in Italy or in any other country
is known to the Italian security authorities
and I was granted a residence permit in Italy and special protection after my asylum application was rejected by the Foggia court
I consider my arrest and trial here to be illegitimate
was carried out in contradiction with international humanitarian law
the Geneva Convention and the two Additional Protocols
and everything that flows from it is also illegal; anything based on illegitimacy is indeed illegitimate
If you recognize the legitimacy of the State of Palestine
then the extradition request made against me in January of last year should have been submitted by my country’s government
you consider Palestine to be a territory illegally occupied by a colonial power
and you should not arrest me here for that reason
I have read your observations on the case and
I have concluded that you consider Palestinians terrorists not only because of the legitimate resistance they are waging against an occupying state
but because you recognize Israel as a friendly state
If the occupying country in question had been another
you would have recognized the legitimacy of the Palestinian resistance
You are not judging me according to international law
but according to your diplomatic relations
simply because Israel is considered an ally of the Italian government
and you consider all its actions legitimate
It would then be better to change the name of the international and humanitarian courts to “Courts of Friends.”
You want me to defend myself against the accusations against me
but I am ashamed to seek acquittal on charges that
I do not want to defend myself against the accusation of having rights and having claimed them
or of having tried to liberate my people and my country from colonial oppression
I swear that I have no intention of being acquitted of the legitimate resistance against the Zionist occupation
The Palestinian resistance is one of the noblest phenomena known to history
I am ashamed to find myself in a warm room
I am ashamed of the humane treatment received from the prison authorities here
while my fellow prisoners in Israeli jails suffer the worst torture
all my documents issued in Italy do not mention the name “Palestine,” but “Occupied Territories.” Therefore
under the conventions signed by your country
you must consider resistance against the occupying entity legitimate
I am forced to note that in political terms
the world adopts double standards: the one that is stronger and supported by the United States prevails
if we consider the settlers who occupy the land of Palestine without right or legitimacy as civilians
simply because they do not wear the uniform of the Israeli army
to have the same judgment regarding the Palestinian resistance
which is also composed of civilians and not soldiers
because Palestine has neither a state nor an army to defend itself against aggressors
Both use weapons and kill; the only difference is that the Palestinian resistance defends its land
these mistakes have never exceeded one percent
while the settlers systematically attack defenseless civilians
as they did in al-Khalil by killing more than thirty worshippers in the Ibrahimi Mosque
or as they did in the village of Jatt on 16 August and on many other occasions
with the aim of inciting terror among the Palestinians and forcing them to leave their land; the settlers follow the teachings of the Haganah and the Irgun
Nothing can testify to this better than what was recently stated in a letter by the director of the Israeli Shin Bet
who acknowledged that the settlers are terrorist groups and that the Israeli authorities should arrest and suppress them
Benjamin Netanyahu’s response was to provide the settlers with more than 10,000 additional rifles
recognized by the International Criminal Court as a war criminal for the massacres committed against Palestinians
The Hague Court issued an arrest warrant for him if he came to Europe
the Italian government declared that he would be welcome in Italy and rejected the Court’s decision
It was the government that decided to arrest me at the Israeli request
I can say that I see no law in this country that is not that of the stronger party; everything else is fiction
At the first extradition hearing in February 2024
I asked the Court of Appeals and the Attorney General not to hand over the contents of my cell phones to the Israelis
as they contained confidential information that I possessed as a Palestinian resistance fighter
as they were aware that we were at war and that Italy was neutral
all the information contained in my phones was handed over to the Israelis
you have violated all security principles and international law itself
thus becoming de facto accomplices of the Israelis in this war
helping them suppress the legitimate aspirations of an oppressed people
Women throughout the world have not been capable of giving birth to resistance fighters like the Palestinian people
all the nations and armies of the world have aligned themselves against us
But our cause will never end as long as a single Palestinian child is alive
The Palestinians will not bow their heads or beg for pity
And while no one will restore our rights while we are alive
we will face a judgment that will be the most just: that of God
who will deny no one’s right and will restore to every oppressed person their rights
I have been subjected to torture dozens of times
I have also been the victim of assassination attempts by Israel
My body bears eleven bullets and more than forty shrapnel wounds; I do not have a single bone that is not broken
except for a few memories and photos of friends killed by the occupation
and of a friend executed in cold blood before my eyes
I have a family I have not seen for many years and two parents who died without having fulfilled their dream of seeing us one last time
even our homes have been demolished by Israeli bulldozers
I have never taken a step back or hesitated to demand my country’s right to freedom
This is because I firmly believe in this cause
What could it be like to be killed for the freedom of my country and my people
What could it be like to spend years in prison for my cause
Especially considering that there are more than 10,000 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails
it is that all my companions had the honor of falling as martyrs
nourishing with their blood this land of peace and love
we are a people who love life more than anything
we prefer death with dignity and honor to life in humiliation
we believe that Palestine deserves it and that our beloved Jerusalem has a high price that every Palestinian is willing to pay with their soul
ready to defend it with our souls and our blood
He who does not defend his own mother when she needs him will not have the right to be buried tomorrow in his own land
who will be rejected by his own land and will never feel its warmth
You all have a homeland in which to live in peace and security
and we are ready to sacrifice our souls to defend it
It is this homeland that gives us dignity and honor
and this can only be understood by those who are free on this land; we are a people who do not surrender; it is victory or death
How can you accuse me of terrorism when you recognize the legitimacy of the Fatah movement
which has offices and representations all over the world
Isn’t this a false and hypocritical attitude
Italy has also hosted the leader and founder of our movement in the Italian Parliament on two occasions
he came to Italy dressed in his military uniform and armed
he delivered a speech that was heard around the world
The same was true for the current president
If the blind gaze of justice affirms that the Palestinian resistance are terrorists and not partisans
where the strongest and most brutal prevail
the Italian people are not and never will be our enemy; they deserve all the best and our respect; they are a friendly people who have always supported the Palestinian cause
Our enemies are the Israelis who occupy our land
The Israeli entity is an occupying and terrorist entity
which does not respect and has never respected
they have murdered numerous Palestinians all over the world: in Norway
They recognize no law that is not their own
and they consider all those who are not Israelis as their subordinates
they also attack the Pope with the same slanderous accusation
Anyone who does not align with them becomes an enemy to be targeted
We Palestinians are a free people and we will never accept subjugation to anyone
the Israeli army has displaced more than 40,000 Palestinians from their homes in Tulkarem
and killing women and children; the same is happening in Jenin
committing the worst massacres against defenseless civilians
while you call our defense terrorism; why have you become blind and deaf to what is happening
the Zionist entity has been killing and destroying in Palestine since 1947
But the world has remained motionless and silent
and the pain is felt only by those who receive the wound
just as the Italian people faced Nazi German aggression and violence
to which Italy has adhered and recognizes its legitimacy
and Nazi Germany should also be classified as terrorism
the Israeli occupation has respected neither Security Council Resolutions nor the decisions of the International Court
Can you tell me where the Oslo and Camp David Accords have gone
and where Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338 have gone
Can you count the Palestinians killed during the Israeli aggression from 1947 to the present day
What does your law and your legislation say about this
the Palestinian mother is like all mothers in this world
seeing him return wrapped in a white sheet
a father with his wife and nine children who are without food
The father goes out to look for something to eat; when he returns
he finds his entire family dead under the rubble
Can one of you stand up and say that Israel is an occupying
but none of you can say it out loud because you would be accused of anti-Semitism
or you might find yourself sharing a lunch table with me in prison
That is why I say again and again that perhaps the Palestinians are the only free people in this enslaved world
Peace to the souls of the martyrs and children of Palestine
We will always be the first line of defense until liberation

Palestinian prisoners call for international boycott of Israel
The sounds of birds chirping and close to 30 people chattering filled the air at the Anan Bay Cabin in the Tongass National Forest this past Monday
They waited for Senator Lisa Murkowski to arrive for the celebratory ribbon cutting ceremony of the cabin
Recreationists used the cabin over the past 60 years
Builders reconstructed it twice since then and it served as a trapper cabin before it had an upgrade in 2012
The recent loss of the cabin meant that most visitors were now limited to day trips to the nearby Anan Wildlife Observatory
where black and brown bears fish for salmon.
a tribal elder with the Wrangell Cooperative Association
“It’s really beautiful and wonderful
It’s reminiscent of the other cabins that you see
The red cedar cabin is pretty big and it could easily fit a group of ten people
There’s a spacious loft with a window looking out at Anan Bay
A roof protects the large porch where hammocks could easily be strung up
She heard an eagle earlier when walking near the cabin
“This is the old place and we were thinking that we would sprinkle tobacco so that we’re met in a good way here,” she said
“We would sing an Eagle song and then compliment it with the Raven song
because balance of the tribes that were here.”
Oliver and Tribal Administrator Esther Aaltséen Reese welcomed Murkowski when she arrived by telling her about the land in Tlingit and English
Then Oliver beat a drum as they sang the Eagle and Raven songs
Murkowski showed appreciation to everyone who’s worked on the Anan Bay Cabin.
“I’ll introduce myself appropriately
She said she remembers staying in some of the Forest Service cabins as a kid and how integral they are in many Alaskans’ lives.
“None of them ever looked like this,” she said
“They were the places where your family would go
or they were an opportunity for families to gather.”
Murkowski cut the ribbon Tribal Administrator Reese sprinkled tobacco on it
Murkowski said as Reese sprinkled tobacco on the ribbon
Murkowski cut the ribbon with a large pair of gold colored scissors
president and CEO of the National Forest Foundation
made it to the ribbon cutting ceremony as well.
The non-profit organization focuses on forest health
improvising recreation infrastructure and engaging the public
and is a significant partner of the Forest Service for getting the Anan Bay Cabin up and running for recreationists.
“We are hoping to work on about 25 cabins across both forests,” Mitsos said
“Hopefully will build some new ones that are more accessible than current ones
and then rebuild and refurbish some of the ones like this one that needed some help.”
said they’ve been working on the cabins project for about four years
He said they’ve taken a hard look at cabin use patterns
“We’ve seen those use patterns change over time and discovered that there’s a lot of demand for cabins near communities
up short distances of trails or short boat rides in protected water
such as this cabin here at Anan,” he said
He said the cabin is one of the five cabins in this region that have been under construction this year and it’s the first to be completed in the Tongass
constructed the cabin using some local materials
“I wish I was staying here for a week,” King said
The reward after you work all the way through a process like this is to watch people come out and enjoy it
After visiting the cabin and checking out the observatory deck and the live cams that the T3 students worked on
Murkowski stopped mid-trail like any other visitor to take in the extraordinary scene
“I got to take a quick picture of the fish because you can’t quite see the concentration,” she said
“You know you never get tired of this
and you never get tired of looking at the bears
you never get tired of looking at the fish
The wildlife viewing at Anan is exceptional because it is so remote
But that also means it’s difficult to visit for most
Murkowski said it’s great that the live cams are up
they will never have that opportunity to see it in person,” she said
“Using the technologies that we just saw here at the Anan Observatory really does open that aperture to the world.”
Murkowski took the initiative to include new cabins in the 2022 Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill
And will she stay at Anan sometime in the future

A long-awaited upgrade at the Anan Wildlife Observatory in Southeast Alaska near Wrangell offers anyone online a live look at the observatory's famous black and brown bears
a group of six people filled a quarter-mile wilderness trail in the Tongass National Forest with chatter while walking toward an observation platform
where everyone waded through the water from a small fishing boat to get to the trail
The group tried to avoid the bear droppings as bald eagles and gulls swooped down into the rushing Anan Creek for salmon
The thousands of salmon swimming upstream were on a mission to spawn — and up the creek
said July 24 marked a big deal for anyone who wants to see bears at the observatory

“We want to be able to show the wonderful resources to the world because many people will never be able to get to this very remote place,” she said. “Our camera live stream project went live at 11 o’clock and we’ve got it up on the screens here. Folks at home can go to explore.org and they can look up the bears of the Tongass and see the Anan bears.”
A few other people were at the bear observatory deck when the group arrived
A big black bear stood in the creek and fished directly below them
people needed to sign up on a sheet to visit the lower observatory deck in 10-minute increments
the Forest Service also recently put in a spiral staircase this year that leads down to the lower deck
Two cameras attached to the lower observatory deck give a close-up view of the bears in the creek. High-school students planned and installed the live bear cameras at Anan through a collaboration between the Forest Service and T3 Alliance
which stands for Teaching through Technology
T3 Alliance teaches high school students STEM skills – Science
it’s a five-year program funded through a $300,000 grant
About 14 students worked closely with the Forest Service to set up the live bear cameras
They visited the observatory a few times before bear season was in full swing to brainstorm and get measurements
Houser said it took several more trips to get it fully installed
with installation beginning in May and completed on July 19. In total
it took about seven months for them to finish this project
But by next spring they plan on installing two more cameras with one being an underwater camera in the creek
Researchers want to see how bear activity compares with human interaction and without
“We have to work with our students and their welding and manufacturing,” Houser said
“They’re creating this really cool structure to hold that camera underwater.”
Having live cameras in a very remote area is complex
the students had to figure out how to set up an internet connection
They brought in Starlink satellite receivers
They also had to figure out how to keep the equipment safe from vandalism — not necessarily from humans
But Houser said they’ll most likely be turned off in the winter to preserve the equipment
there won’t be much sunlight for the solar panels or activity for viewers during the bears’ hibernation season
“We think it would be kind of a lot of looking at water in the winter,” Houser said
Houser said another big piece of the project is to help researchers and the public better understand the population of black and brown bears
She said it’s a great opportunity for citizen science – where the public can voluntarily make observations and add to research to Anan Wildlife Observatory
which attracts visitors from all over the globe
“There’s so many things special about Anan,” Houser said
“One is that it’s one of the only places known to have both black and brown bears here
The resources are so rich that they tolerate each other in this small area on the creek
Another thing is that this area has been used for thousands of years
Tlingit people came here to use this area for thousands of years
And that’s why Canadian linguist James Crippen joined the visiting group
As a professor at McGill University in Montreal
Crippen documents the Lingít language and helps out with language revitalization efforts.
“Dzéiwsh and I’m from the Basket House of the Ḵak’weidí Deishitaan here in Wrangell,” he said
“I’m here mostly just as a member of my community interested in using the language more
seeing the places where we’ve used and done things and thinking about the names and traditions that are used in these areas.”
Anan is spoken as ‘on-on’ and spelled An.áan
“It’s a resting place where folks are resting,” he said
“The idea is you can stop here and take a break for a while.”
Crippen said Anan was a place for the Tlingit to fish during the summer and pack up the food for their treks to their winter villages
And fishing alongside them would be the s’eek-or black and brown bears
“It’s a real treat to be able to come home and see all the folks and catch up with people and work with with elders here in town,” Crippen said
I get to work what everybody else says is field work
He said it looks like good fishing when we look down at the bears hunting for salmon
“I might have gone down there and join him
A reporter pointed out that one of the bears was snacking on some fish.
Two retired bear scientists were also with the group
Danielle Chi did research at Anan in the 1990s because the Forest Service had questions about managing the tourist attraction
“One of the things we found is it seemed like when a certain number of people were on the observatory
bear activity sort of dropped off,” she said
Chi said that bear activity is much higher now at the lower falls than in the ’90s
“I can’t explain that other than it’s exciting to see,” she said

it’s still available for everyone to view online

Pink salmon fill the creek each summer at the Anan Wildlife Observatory near Wrangell
returning to their ancestral spawning grounds after a year and a half at sea
both black and brown bears wade into the creek and perch on rocks to pluck fish from the water
tolerating one another in a rare interspecies truce brought on by sheer abundance
The annual salmon run has made this southeast Alaska creek a popular destination for more than the bears
Human visitors — eager to catch a glimpse of the increasingly rotund bears
eagles and other wildlife — embark on a journey by boat or float plane to reach the remote site
According to the Anan Wildlife Observatory
up to 60 people a day purchase permits to visit — a cap set to avoid impacts to the wildlife they’ve come to witness
This past summer, the number of people able to appreciate the dynamic banquet jumped dramatically when two bear-viewing livecams began broadcasting on Explore.org
More than 200,000 people tuned in from every state and around the globe between late July when the cameras went live
when the cameras were turned off for the season
Explore.org Director of New Media Candice Rusch reported that fans quickly took to the Tongass National Forest cams, featured at the top of the organization’s website. “Right away, people were investigating the bear book to identify individual bears
and falling in love with the beautiful canyon views.”
The groundwork for broadcasting these unique wildlife views — including installing cameras
solar panels and satellite internet— took seven months of intense planning and ingenuity
which Rusch says is typical for Explore.org’s off-grid locations
was that the team researching and installing the system was comprised of students from Wrangell High School
The students were part of the T3 Alliance (Teaching Through Technology)
an organization that engages rural Alaska students with science
engineering and mathematics in their communities
Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service
funded through the Great American Outdoors Act
covered the costs of the camera system components
including small stipends for the students and their mentors working on the project
Wrangell District Ranger Tory Houser explained that the partnership developed over the years as students accomplished smaller “missions” for the agency such as surveying cabins and creating three-dimensional trail maps
had been part of some of these smaller missions
When he first learned about the livecams project — a mission on an unprecedented scale — he knew he wanted to be a part of it
“It was an opportunity to help our community and make the biggest impact of any T3 project yet.”
Each of the fourteen students had a domain of responsibility
with Bardin-Siekawitch taking on the power system
He created an energy budget to determine how many solar panels would be needed to power the cameras and satellite internet
it would be up to him to wire together the batteries and related components on the observation deck
The remote location posed several challenges
starting with transporting bulky equipment to the site
Team problem solving and community support proved to be critical assets as the students embarked on installation
The journey to the observatory began with an hour and 15-minute boat ride from Wrangell
the students waded through the shallow water to transfer materials
which they pushed along the narrow trail to the observatory
As the students set to work installing the solar panels
they realized that they needed customized brackets to complete the task
Wrangell community member and T3 parent James Edens got to work right away making the brackets and arranged for them to be flown in by float plane
stepped up to host the students on their boat when they needed a place to stay on site during the first week of work
the students were the first to stay in the newly rebuilt Anan Bay Cabin
District Ranger Houser spent a day there with the group
as both a Forest Service employee and a parent to one of the students
Houser recalled working alongside Bardin-Siekawitch to wire together the batteries
inverter and other components of the power system
“We had a few iterations on our battery project
and used the T3 growth mindset to ultimately wire the batteries successfully.”
“That kind of hands-on learning is what T3 excels in,” said Bardin-Siekawitch
“My favorite part was the sheer amount of problem-solving we did throughout this project
bouncing ideas off each other every time a problem came up
Esther Aaltséen Reese is a tribal administrator for the Wrangell Cooperative Association
Reese said that Anan has always been an incredibly special place to the people of the Shtaxʼhéen Ḵwáan
who have stewarded the land since time immemorial
Anan is usually translated from the Tlingit language as “resting town,” but the actual meaning is deeper
and observe — almost meditative — watching the sun
the way the animals are moving — all of it.” She appreciated the livestreams as a means to share that way of knowing and learning with the world
“There's a sense of peace you feel here that I am excited for people to experience.”
and says it is there because Anan has been a place of bounty and well loved for many centuries
Watching nature livestreams can reduce anxiety and stress
but the deeper connection to nature can impact more than viewers’ wellbeing
reminding people we are not separate from nature but rather a part of it
It can inspire people to protect the ecosystem.”
viewers might have the opportunity to turn their love for the place into research through citizen science on Explore.org
Viewers who have already been helping identify individual bears may help figure out how many total individuals use the site
Kardiak hopes that additional cameras may help them learn more about the impact of in-person visitation
if days with more people on the observation deck result in more bears re-routing to more hidden upper falls
The T3 students hope that installing an underwater camera next year might enable viewers to catch a glimpse of the schooled-up salmon at the base of the falls
and the moment fish are snatched from the water by bears like Scuba Sue
Another potential camera location is a half mile upstream at the upper falls
which they hope might pick up on different bears
Bardin-Siekawitch said that the opportunity for the T3 Alliance to conduct “missions” for the agency has been life-changing — sparking his interest in electricity
confirming engineering as a career path and kickstarting
“…so many unbelievable opportunities in our little Alaskan backwater.”
Most recently, T3 students designed a system to water the roots of the U.S
Capitol Christmas Tree as it travels the length of the country from Wrangell to Washington
associate director and community engagement lead of T3 Alaska says that the collaborations provided a scaffolding for learning with benefits that extend to the broader community and the forest itself
“All the missions we have been able to complete for the Forest Service have provided awesome learning moments for our students
With each mission we are able to level up our skills and help with bigger and bigger projects
I think it is an incredible way to build the next generation of stewards of the Tongass.”

the political trial of Palestinians Anan Yaeesh
The three Palestinians are accused of “subversive association for terrorist purposes” in a case that began when the Zionist entity
“Israel,” demanded the extradition of Anan Yaeesh
While Ali and Mansour have been provisionally released pending trial
Anan has been imprisoned in Italy for one year
Anan Yaeesh is a 37-year-old Palestinian activist from Tulkarem in the West Bank of occupied Palestine
where he was detained by Jordanian authorities
who maintain normalization and security cooperation with the Zionist regime
for several months; he was able to return to Italy in November 2023
he was arrested by the Italian police in the city of L’Aquila where he resides at the request of the “Israeli” regime
that continue to uphold Palestinian liberation rather than “security coordination” with the occupier.)
While the L’Aquila court rejected his extradition on 12 March 2024
noting that he would be subjected to torture

ALASKA — At Anan Wildlife Observatory near Wrangell
The annual salmon buffet has made this southeast Alaska creek a popular destination for more than bears
eager to catch a glimpse of the increasingly rotund bruins
eagles and other wildlife as they embark on a journey by boat or float plane to reach the remote site
Up to 60 people a day purchase permits to visit—a cap set to avoid impacts to the wildlife they’ve come to see.
This past summer, the number of people able to appreciate the dynamic banquet jumped dramatically when two bear viewing livecams began broadcasting on Explore.org
More than 200,000 people tuned in from every state and around the globe between late July
Explore.org Director of New Media Candice Rusch reported that fans quickly took to the Tongass National Forest cams, featured at the top of the organization’s website. “Right away, people were investigating the bear book to identify individual bears
asking questions and falling in love with the beautiful canyon views.”
An extraordinary allianceThe groundwork for broadcasting those views—installing cameras
solar panels and satellite internet—took seven months of intense planning and ingenuity
was the team researching and installing the system—comprised of students from Wrangell High School.

The publications are titled “Country Report on Accounting Education in Nigeria” and “National Financial Reporting Quality Award”
The Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) has introduced two publications to reform accounting education and enhance financial reporting standards in Nigeria.
The announcement was made during the 29th Annual Conference in Abuja
themed “Advancing Accounting Excellence in a Changing World”
titled “Country Report on Accounting Education in Nigeria,” analyses the current state of accountancy education
identifying challenges and offering recommendations for modernisation.
presented by ANAN Country Report on Accountancy Education chairman and Financial Reporting Quality Award Panel and Membership Secretary Suleiman Aruwa
highlights the reliance on outdated curricula in many Nigerian accounting programmes.
It points out the failure to address emerging areas such as forensic accounting
which limit students’ exposure to skills necessary for combating global financial crimes.
The report also notes the infrastructure deficiencies in under-resourced institutions
which hinders students’ practical experience.
Don’t let policy changes catch you off guard
Stay proactive with real-time data and expert analysis
Another issue raised by the publication is the shortage of highly qualified accounting educators in Nigeria.
The report indicates that many faculty members lack opportunities for continuous professional development
which impacts their ability to teach contemporary accounting practices effectively.
the report recommends that educational institutions should modernise accounting curricula to include contemporary topics and expand practical training opportunities through industry partnerships.
The ANAN also unveiled the “National Financial Reporting Quality Award” publication.
This initiative aims to improve the quality of financial reporting in Nigeria by establishing benchmarks and recognising organisations that demonstrate excellence in financial transparency and accountability.
the inaugural winners of the financial reporting quality award for the public and private sector categories were the Federal Inland Revenue Service and MTN Nigeria

The Association of National Accountants of Nigeria, ANAN has donated an Accounting Research Centre to the University of Africa Toru-orua
FCNA who commissioned the facility in company of fellows and members of ANAN on Monday 14th April 2025 at the University campus
had earlier made the pledge to the University only in August last year
the Vice Chancellor of the University of Africa
Professor Solomon Tamarabrakemi Ebobrah said that he is indeed glad to have received the gift of the facility
He noted that the fulfillment of this pledge is a testament to the integrity of the accounting profession as displayed by the ANAN
He added that it is gratifying to have partners such as ANAN
who realize that government as much as it can do
is not able to take the sole responsibility of funding university education alone
thus ANAN has written its name in gold in the annals of the history of UAT and urged other organizations to follow suite in building the Bayelsa state owned University
He further stated that ANAN is the first to make a promise as such to UAT and fulfill same
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony
FCNA noted that the research centre has a story that has come over the years in ANAN
adding that every president of ANAN had been given the privilege to site a signature project during his tenure
he chose to site it home despite pressure to site it at other institutions
He tasked the University to make proper use of the facility to avoid dilapidation
stating that ANAN has a yearly prize for the running of the centre though that is subject to proper usage of the facility
He also informed that he and the distinguished Senator Henry Seriake Dickson had reached out to the Nigeria Local Content Development Board (NLCDB)
and other well meaning Nigerians to solicit for the equipments for the centre
He further announced that ANAN has endowed a price for the best graduating student in accounting to the tune of One Million Naira
Barclays Foubiri Ayakoroma thanked the ANAN Chair for the friendship that has birthed this project
the chief executive officer and every other member
He also appreciated their swift release of funds to the contractors
His appreciation was further heightened as he noted that an earlier visit by ANAN external auditors had showed that this project is so far the largest and the best donated by ANAN
The commissioning ceremony was attended by the principal officers of the University of Africa
the first and second Vice Presidents of ANAN
fellows and members of ANAN in addition to staff
students and residents of the university community
and Students of the University also congratulated the ANAN Chief on his very recent conferment of a chieftaincy title by the King and chieftains of the Tarakiri Clan in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State
Neminebor was conferred with the Chieftaincy title of ‘Isomu-weniowei of Tarakiri Clan’
The honour was done in recognition of his contribution to the development of the Tarakiri Clan being a son of the soil
On transparency we believe that it is the right of the people of the state
to know what funds accure to the coffers of the state and the various local government councils and how they are utilized
This is the only way to secure the trust and confidence of the people in whom sovereignty lies
‘I have directed all local government chairmen to comply with this paradigm shift on the issue of transparency
to reflect the new Bayelsa we are building.’

In the bustling city of New York, far from her roots in Bangladesh, Tashnuva Anan Shishir stands as a beacon of hope and perseverance. Her story, marked by struggle and unprecedented achievements, resonates with an indomitable spirit that challenges societal norms and champions the cause of the transgender community.
Tashnuva's journey began amidst the conservative fabric of Bangladeshi society, where her identity as a transgender woman overshadowed her talents and skills. "I have always been identified as transgender, but not as an individual with skills or qualifications," she reflects on her early career struggles. Despite her competence, Tashnuva faced relentless discrimination, watching less experienced individuals surpass her as she tirelessly knocked on the doors of opportunity.
Tashnuva's breakthrough as Bangladesh's first transgender news anchor was not just a personal victory but a societal paradigm shift. She recalls, "When I was about to read the news on a national TV channel, I had a gut feeling that a big change was about to occur." She advocated for her identity, requesting not to be referred to as 'hijra' but as transgender, educating both colleagues and viewers.
For Tashnuva, acting was not just a profession but a sanctuary. "Whenever I stand on the stage or in front of the camera, I forget everything — my pain, anguish, and worries," she says. This shift from news anchoring to acting was a realisation of a lifelong dream, one that was affirmed when she was featured in The New York Times.
In portraying Shou in Shayok Misha Chowdhury's bilingual play, Public Obscenities, Tashnuva found a character that echoed her life. "Shou and Tasnuva are very much related in terms of identity and struggles," she explains. To her, Shou is more than a character; it's a representation of the South Asian trans community's life and challenges.
For Tashnuva, activism is interwoven with her art. Her acting is a platform for her ongoing advocacy for the queer community. She emphasises the need for representation in South Asian media, advocating for stories that reflect the diverse struggles and identities within the queer community.
Tashnuva's journey has been one of love and optimism, despite the challenges. "I am an optimist and this positivity and my love for humanity help me to heal whenever someone hurts me," she shares. This positive outlook has been the cornerstone of her resilience.
Tashnuva finds her greatest reward in the love and support she receives from her audience. "People love me wholeheartedly and this is the most rewarding aspect of my journey so far," she gratefully acknowledges. Her accolades, while significant, pale in comparison to the heartfelt connection she has made with her audience.
With peace and positive surroundings as her dream, Tashnuva looks forward to working with renowned directors and portraying impactful characters. "I wish to play the characters that speak for society and the dreams of common people," she says, eager to leave a lasting impression through her work.
To young transgender individuals aspiring to enter the arts, Tashnuva advises patience, humility, and dedication. She emphasises the importance of tolerance and listening, crucial traits for anyone looking to make their mark in the arts.
Tashnuva urges society to embrace acceptance and tolerance, not just for the transgender community but for all of humanity. She sees this as vital for unlocking the potential of transgender artists and professionals.
New York has offered Tashnuva a sense of liberation and freedom, allowing her to pursue her passions without fear or restraint. "New York has given me freedom and changed me a lot," she acknowledges.
Reflecting on her journey, Tashnuva would tell her past self to learn from her mistakes but to remain transparent and honest. This blend of wisdom and authenticity has been her guiding light through a life marked by both hardship and incredible success.
Tashnuva Anan Shishir's story is a monument to the strength of resilience, hope, and unshakable persistence. Her journey from the streets of Bangladesh to the stages of New York is an inspiration and a light of hope for people who want to break free from cultural limitations and accept their true selves with pride and dignity.

Abraham Ato Anan
NDC 2 Vice Chairman in the Efutu constituency
One of the most popular recreation cabins in the Wrangell area fell victim to the forest this winter – it’s been flattened by a spruce tree
Forest Service is uncertain how long a replacement might take.
The turquoise water and rocky beaches of Anan Bay
about 30 miles south of Wrangell on the mainland
Jeff Owings spent the better part of three months at Anan last year
working with Ketchikan-based R&M Engineering as an inspector on a large improvement project for the wildlife viewing platform that sits above Anan Creek.
“I was blown away with the beauty of the area,” he says
“And it was about that time that I said to myself: ‘Next early spring
I want to bring my family up for a long weekend.’ So this trip we had
we actually had planned this out for about a year.”
Owings pulled into Anan Bay in a 46-foot landing craft packed with six adults
“I was looking at the face of the cabin and didn’t notice anything right off the bat
which is where we keep the skiff to go back and forth,” Owings relates.
“As I was getting ready to launch the skiff in the water
that’s when I looked over at the cabin and realized I didn’t see a roof,” he continues
and that’s when I realized that there was a big tree laying across the cabin.”
hoping the damage wasn’t as extensive as it looked from the bay
Much of the back portion of the cabin is smashed
especially knowing how much love and care went into that entire site,” Owings says
Acting District Ranger Tory Houser heard from Owings about the damage to the cabin
the cabin is completely unusable,” Houser says
the roof is squashed in and the sidewall is completely damaged
And you can see in some of the pictures that the stringers that hold up the roof and the second floor are damaged
Houser says that Forest Service staff will head down to do an inspection as soon as possible.
“Our staff are going out as soon as we can get a good weather window to get down there
and we’re gonna check the whole site out and assess the extent of the damage to the cabin on the ground and make a plan for what we can do get trees out of there
Checking out the whole site will include the quarter-mile walk up to the Anan Creek Wildlife Observatory deck in case it was a larger blowdown than just one tree.
Owings didn’t go and check on the platform
“I do know that there are some pretty big trees up there by that observatory
all kind of sitting on the rock faces there along the falls
and they might want to get someone to go make sure everything’s okay,” Owings says.
He didn’t notice a ton of blowdowns along the shore – it seemed like the spruce that took out the cabin wasn’t part of a bigger blowdown event.
But Houser says she’s hopeful for a relatively quick repair for the cabin.
Houser says it’s not a totally infrequent occurrence to have a cabin hit by a tree – we are in the largest national forest in the United States
But it seems to be a more catastrophic hit.
there is a silver lining: “Thank goodness nobody was in it
And even with Owings’ group’s plans foiled by nature – “That was the rough part: all these people were looking forward to this
I’ve been telling my kids about this really for about a year now” – he says the group still had an enjoyable weekend at a nearby cabin they were able to book last-minute.
“We realized that there’s another cabin just right around the corner at Frosty Bay
so we were able to rent that one out and spend our time there
so it wasn’t a total loss,” Owings says
“That’s what we ended up doing for Plan B instead of just heading home.”
Of the 22 other cabins in the Wrangell Ranger District
only two have been used more than Anan Bay over the past three years: Middle Ridge
the only cabin on the Wrangell road system
which can be spotted on the boat ride to Anan
down the channel between Wrangell and the mainland
Owings adds there isn’t really a great way to avoid trees falling in a forest.
“I think that kind of just comes hand in hand with living in Southeast Alaska – these acts of God that we have to encounter on a daily basis,” Owings says
“I don’t think there’s really much anyone could do about it unless the Forest Service wanted to clear cut everything within a 500-foot diameter of each cabin
and that [would] kind of take away from these cabins and the feeling you get when you’re there.”

TUESDAY, AUGUST 27, 2024 PlayLoading... Office of the Council of State has determined that the highrise building project does not need to be demolishedShares of ANAN surged 10.29% after the Office of the Council of State determined that the Ashton Asoke project does not need to be demolished and that new construction permits can be obtained.
Analysts noted that this resolution significantly enhances the company’s outlook, with a potential turnaround expected in the second half of next year.
This Tuesday morning (August 27), ANAN, or Ananda Development Pcl, saw its stock rise by 10.29%, adding 0.07 baht to reach 0.75 baht per share.
Kornphat Worachet, director of research and investment services at Krungsri Securities, said: "As a result, ANAN does not need to demolish the Ashton Asoke building. The matter is expected to be resolved as early as Q3/2024 or by early Q4/2024 at the latest."
Investors may consider speculative trading, as the risk has decreased, and ANAN will gradually clear its inventory. The company’s future bond issuance is also unlikely to face difficulties.
However, while the business is addressing its issues, a turnaround is anticipated to occur in the second half of next year. Although earnings are expected to recover later in the year, investors should take a long-term view or engage in speculative trading for now, analysts say.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) had consulted with the Council of State on how to comply with the court's order to revoke the construction permit. The Council of State responded on Monday that since the court’s order rendered the original permit void, the project was built without a permit.
The BMA must ensure compliance with the law, allowing the developer to submit a new application retroactively, avoiding the need for demolition.
Ashton Asoke is a high-rise condominium project with 50 floors and 783 units.
Under the law governing the construction of “large buildings”, a high-rise condominium must have at least one side of its land adjoining a public road for a continuous length of not less than 12 metres and must extend continuously up to the location of the building, ensuring sufficient space for emergency-vehicle access.
The project negotiated with the Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) to expand this access point to 12 metres, paying nearly 100 million baht in compensation, which led to the issuance of the permit and subsequent construction.
However, the Central Administrative Court ruled that using the MRTA land, which had originally been expropriated for public transit use, to expand the project's access was inappropriate as it solely benefited a private entity.

particularly within higher education institutions
This gap undermines the global competitiveness of Nigerian accountants
leaving graduates ill-prepared for the demands of modern accounting
especially regarding emerging technol-ogies like data analytics and block-chain
identified in the report that stringent entry requirements for professional accounting membership create significant barriers for aspiring accountants
The rigorous examinations and work experience prerequisites
coupled with limited mentorship opportunities
make it difficult for individuals to navigate the path to professional membership
This has resulted in reduced diversity within the profession
Investing in the continuous professional development of accountancy educa-tors is another crucial recommendation highlighted in the report
providing opportunities for advanced degrees
and international exposure will enhance the quality of instruction and job satisfaction for faculty members
The report further advocates for increasing access to accounting education

ANAN unveiled the second publication titled “National Financial Reporting Quality Award”
In an interview following the launch of two publications
emphasized the association’s commitment to enhancing the science of accountancy in Nigeria and supporting quality accounting prac-tices
“The two publications represent our contribution to advancing the science of accountancy in Nigeria
The first publication is a comprehensive country re-port on accountancy education in Nigeria
which is foundational to the quality of practice in the field,” he said
Fasua noted that accountancy education is a crucial element in shaping the services accountants provide
which ultimately serve the public interest
“Both academics and practice combine to form what we call accountancy education
If the service they render is not of high quality
and ultimately the citizens that accountants serve” he stated
He also said that the reports are product of thorough research into various ed-ucational institutions
and the two primary professional accountancy organizations in Nigeria: ANAN and the In-stitute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN)
The research aimed to as-sess how well accountancy education in Nigeria aligns with international education standards
particularly those set by the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC)
we aimed to understand our current standing in ac-countancy education relative to global expectations,” the CEO explained
we compiled our findings into a report that outlines where we are in terms of accountancy education and what gaps still exist” he added

the association presented awards for Nation-al Financial Reporting Quality
recognizing outstanding compliance with finan-cial reporting standards among various institutions
the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) was awarded first position
while the Bank of Industry secured second place
with Fidelity Bank taking the second position
Over 40 organizations from both the public and private sectors were assessed based on their adherence to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS)
he elaborated on the criteria used for the assessments
“We looked at their financial reports to evaluate compliance with IFRS and IPSAS standards
We also considered the frequency with which they produce and publish their financial reports,” he explained
“It’s not just about how often reports are produced
but how well these organizations meet their obligations regarding timely and transparent reporting” he added
the CEO noted that the overall landscape of financial reporting quality in Nigeria still has significant room for improvement
“Only a few organizations truly met the expected standards
we did not find anyone within certain ministries that could be recognized,” he stated
