What better way to celebrate your 40th birthday than getting in a fistfight in Abu Dhabi
That’s how former lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos will be celebrating his birthday on Saturday night.
but this specific date and being Abu Dhabi
I decided to wait a little longer and fight on my birthday
which is where I fought 14 years ago and I got Submission of the Night

Dos Anjos makes the move back up to the 170-pound division after competing at lightweight in his last fight against Mateusz Gamrot earlier this year at UFC 299
Dos Anjos posted on his social media that he wasn’t looking to compete at lightweight anymore and was only focused on competing at welterweight.
Dos Anjos believes it is an exciting time for the welterweights
and there are a lot of fights that interest him.
young and coming up in the division,” Dos Anjos said
I want to be able to finish my contract with the UFC and
legends that interest me at welterweight.”

so it’s not wrong to know that the end is closer than the start for the Brazilian
don’t think that Dos Anjos is even remotely close to calling it quits
He still finds the fire to fuel himself every day and is still feeling strong and healthy.
and I feel I still have a lot in me,” Dos Anjos said
I don't feel that the time to stop is right now
I think my goal is to keep competing and keep my legacy alive and having that longevity
He'll look to continue his legacy against the No
Both athletes are coming off losses and looking to get back in the win column
he just wants to put on a performance that will get people out of their seats and talking.

“I'm just thankful to be competing and being able to do what I love and provide for my family,” Dos Anjos said
I want people to talk about me on Sunday morning
That's my goal and that's what I'm going to do
Being able to compete and 170 pounds and not have to cut down to 155 pounds is a big game changer for Dos Anjos in a variety of ways
even starting from when the contract is signed
even if the fight was two or three months away
because the weight was always an issue.
he is able to give his body an ample amount of rest between training sessions and even spend more time with family
making the fight camp and fight week process much more enjoyable overall.
Sixteen years spent in the Octagon and Dos Anjos has accomplished more than most might in their fighting career
but that doesn’t mean he is going to stop giving it his all
he might just find himself back to championship gold.
I don't have my eyes on the title because I remember back on the days at lightweight
and it seemed like my dream slipped away from me
But once I got back in the gym and I forgot about the belt
and I was just focused on winning my fight
so right now my focus is on winning my fights
and if the opportunity to fight for the belt is presented to me

Dos Anjos’s return to the Octagon fell short at UFC 308 after suffering a leg injury against Neal on his 40th birthday
After a back-and-forth first minute of the fight
dos Anjos’s left leg appeared to give out on him as he moved back towards the cage
Referee Mark Smith quickly waved off the fight as medical personnel immediately moved in to inspect dos Anjos’s ailment
the extent of dos Anjos’s injury is uncertain
although he’s expected to miss an extended period
Despite the disappointing setback and injury
dos Anjos isn’t backing down and envisions a return to the Octagon as soon as possible
Dos Anjos addressed his following in a recent Instagram post
sorry I let you guys down,” dos Anjos said
“Definitely it was not how I want to celebrate my 40th birthday
During my whole career it’s my second time been hospitalized after a fight
I’ll keep you guys updated on my stories.”
Dos Anjos’s knee injury adds to a growing collection of in-fight injuries for UFC fighters in recent years. Conor McGregor, dos Anjos’s one-time scheduled opponent, shattered his leg against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 and hasn’t fought since that event.

Dos Anjos has now lost four of his last five fights after the injury stoppage loss at UFC 308
dos Anjos suffered unanimous decision losses to Mateusz Gamrot and Vicente Luque inside the Octagon

Rafael dos Anjos turned 40 this past Saturday, but a knee injury suffered during his UFC 308 welterweight bout with Geoff Neal cut his celebration short in Abu Dhabi
On a three-fight losing skid now and winless for almost two years
the former UFC lightweight champion laments the fact he could have to go under the knife and delay his return to the cage
although he’s still unsure of what was the injury suffered at UFC 308
me and Neal kicked at the same time and I felt a big snap
a big pop behind my knee,” dos Anjos said in a video posted on his social media
it’s my second time being hospitalized after the fight and it makes me realize how blessed I am
and going to the hospital only twice in your whole career is a good number.”
Dos Anjos had to undergo post-fight surgery back in August of 2010, when he tapped against Clay Guida after fracturing his jaw
now 21-15 under the UFC banner and 7-9 since losing his title in 2016
“Definitely it was not how I want to celebrate my 40th birthday, it was a tough loss,” dos Anjos wrote on a separate post
Geoff Neal looked good early before Rafael dos Anjos went down with an injury at UFC 308
before the former lightweight champion buckled his left knee
which prompted the referee to stop the fight at the 1:30 mark of Round 1
The welterweight bout was part of the UFC 308 prelims at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi
dropping him with a overhand left less than a minute into Round 1

Neal picked up his first win in over two years
He was on a two-fight losing skid after back-to-back losses to Shavkat Rakhmonov and Ian Machado Garry

he never pushed the UFC to try and reschedule
While eight years have passed since the pair were meant to go head-to-head
the Brazilian has remained adamant that he did ‘the right thing’ by not pursuing the bout
Fresh off a historic victory over Jose Aldo inside just 13 seconds for featherweight gold, Conor McGregor stepped up to lightweight in a bid to make history
no fighter had ever held two belts simultaneously
thus giving the Irishman all the motivation he needed to push the boundaries of MMA further than anybody ever had before

The pair exchanged verbal insults during an entertaining press conference

WOW: Daniel Cormier reveals there’s a way Tom Aspinall can ‘force’ the UFC to make Jon Jones fight
Sadly, however, ‘RDA’ suffered a broken foot, forcing him out of the contest, with just a week and a half to go. This prompted Nate Diaz to step in
and pull off one of the biggest upsets the sport has ever seen
By the time Dos Anjos eventually recovered, his Irish nemesis was still locked in a rivalry with Diaz. Consequently, he instead defended his belt against Eddie Alvarez
before ultimately losing to McGregor himself
the Rio fighter never had the opportunity to showcase his skills against the biggest name in MMA history
he’s more than happy with how things turned out
He told Submission Radio: “Thinking back
but I just wanna move the things [for the lightweight division]
All these years later, Dos Anjos is still content with his decision to move on from his rival. And he’s advised Michael Chandler to do the same
No matter what happens for the rest of his life
RDA can always say he held the most coveted prize in all of MMA
However, Chandler can’t currently do the same. While he has produced some great moments in the promotion, and even had Charles Oliveira nearly out in their title fight
he’s spent the last two years focusing solely on McGregor
The money that comes with clashing with the Dubliner is undeniably sky-high
the rivalry has marinated nicely through a series of The Ultimate Fighter
with the bout failing to come to fruition thus far
Dos Anjos has told ‘Iron’ that he should focus his efforts on claiming the belt
He tweeted: “How much is the opportunity to become a world champion worth
Chandler should stop his ‘See you at the top’ motivational speeches
The former champion fired back: “I’ve been up here buddy

Rafael dos Anjos doesn't like Islam Makhachev's chances of becoming a UFC double champion
Makhachev (27-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC), who defended his lightweight title three times, has reiterated his interest in moving up to welterweight to challenge Leon Edwards
who has competed at both lightweight and welterweight throughout his career
thinks Makhachev would struggle with the size at a weight class above
"He's in a very good momentum right now, but I don't think he can beat Leon Edwards and become a double champion," dos Anjos told Submission Radio
and we see smaller guys like (Dustin) Poirier giving Islam a lot of trouble
and I think he's very weak on that point or like
Former lightweight champion dos Anjos plans on returning to 170 pounds after bouncing around weight classes in his past six fights
He has two particular names in mind for his next fight
he doesn't have a fight coming up," dos Anjos said
"Kevin Holland doesn't have a fight coming up
Georges St-Pierre: UFC champ Islam Makhachev is 'the best pound-for-pound right now'
Kevin Holland has no doubt that 'scary guy' Islam Makhachev could become UFC welterweight champion
Javier Mendez: Islam Makhachev will clear out lightweight, then go after welterweight title
Check out the Geoff Neal vs. Rafael dos Anjo odds for UFC 308 on Saturday, October 26, with my betting preview and breakdown.
The UFC 308 preliminary card features a solid matchup at 170 pounds between Geoff Neal and Rafael dos Anjos.
Despite both Neal and dos Anjos riding two-fight losing skids into this Saturday's prelim bout, each competitor still holds standings in the UFC's top 15 for the welterweight weight class.
Dos Anjos, who tends to bounce back and forth between lightweight and welterweight, is moving back up after coming up short to lightweight Mateusz Gamrot earlier this year.
Neal, on the other hand, is a natural welterweight who is searching for the consistency and success that many projected for him since he came off the first season of Dana White's Contender Series.
Here's my Neal vs. dos Anjo pick and prediction.
Serving as the lone southpaw vs. southpaw affair at UFC 308, this fight offers an interesting stylistic dynamic from a striking perspective.
With the majority of training rooms being occupied by right-handed fighters, southpaws tend to predicate their games against orthodox stance opposition. So, whenever a southpaw does encounter another southpaw in sparring or otherwise, they, too, can be just as uncomfortable as an orthodox fighter when having to strike with a fellow lefty.
Some fighters transition to same-stance matchups seamlessly while others appear to acquire some extra awkwardness to their offense and defense alike.
As far as these fighters go, their sample sizes couldn't be further apart.
Dos Anjos, who has much more experience with this stance pairing, officially stands 6-4 opposite UFC-level southpaws. The losses on the slate for "RDA" come by way of superior wrestlers while the wins were products of the Brazilian's pace and well-rounded skills.
Whereas Neal, oddly enough, has never encountered a dedicated UFC-level southpaw in his career (though he did struggle with the straight punches and kicks of a stance-switching Stephen Thompson).
the American holds a solid speed and power edge over most of his contemporaries
Although Neal still carries his clinching sensibilities from the regional scene
"Handz of Steel" primarily makes his money striking at range
Leaning heavily into strikes off his power side
Neal – despite making some concerted efforts to be more diverse with his targets and shot selection – is a headhunter of the highest order
Neal will need to respect the multi-layered attacks of dos Anjos
Not only does dos Anjos consistently work the body and legs of his opposition with vigor
but the former UFC lightweight champ is also a menace with elbows and knees inside of the clinch
the experienced Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt has a rock-solid top game that he uses to punish opponents with impunity
Neal has good takedown defense to go with his size and strength edge
but the American will need to be on his best behavior given that dos Anjos is 15-5 when able to score a minimum of just 1 takedown
The oddsmakers and the public heavily favor the American fighter
listing Neal -300 and dos Anjos +240 as of this writing
Despite not disagreeing with who is favored
I still find myself being drawn to the underdog side in this fight
Even though Neal is the younger fighter with fewer miles, the Fortis MMA product has not looked the same since almost dying of sepsis back in 2019
From inconsistent performances to troubles on the scale
Neal has struggled to string wins together since 2020
but the Brazilian warhorse is still a fairly reliable output machine who has clearly taken care of his body over the years
It's also worth noting that dos Anjos has only shown durability issues when operating down at lightweight
dos Anjos has displayed a much better ability to take hard shots from even bigger hitters
Takedowns are harder to come by for dos Anjos in this division
but Neal's propensity to crowd his work into closed quarters could give the American more than he bargains for as far as tying up with a superior clinch striker goes
I think that dos Anjos will be much more competitive than what the current odds indicate
Not only does Neal lack experience against southpaws and pressure grapplers
but I believe that dos Anjos' leg kicks – which really come to life in this stance pairing – will wreak havoc on his counterpart considering Neal's history against competent kickers
Couple all that with the fact that this will be Neal's first fight outside of North America, and I think we're firmly in "dog or pass" territory from a moneyline perspective
I don't think that this is a fight that I'll be heavily exposing myself to
but I will be sprinkling on the "dos Anjos to win by decision" method-of-victory prop given that the sportsbook is giving you roughly 5-1 underdog odds for the Brazilian's primary win condition
Dan's Pick: Rafael dos Anjos wins by decision (+490 at FanDuel)

but one of my favorite hikes is the group of trails that connect to and from Ocean View Summit’s panoramic view
I had the pleasure to hike to the Summit with Carlisle
who saw my hike featured in the park activity schedule
It was a very cool morning with clear skies
There were very few visitors so we practically had the park to ourselves
We left park headquarters at 10:30 and started on the Skyline to the Sea Trail
which starts at Castle Rock State Park and runs through Big Basin on the way to Rancho del Oso and Waddell Beach
The Ocean View Summit hike is a loop shaped by four trails
and back down to the visitor center on the Skyline to the Sea Trail
The Dool trail meanders through mixed evergreen forest with plants and trees typically found in the middle elevations of the Waddell Watershed: Redwoods
It’s a quiet forest – one will hear the occasional hammering of the Acorn Woodpecker and the distinctive calls of the Raven and the Steller Jay
My favorites are the stealthy Brown Creeper
We made our way up the Dool Trail until it ended at the Middle Ridge Road where we turned right to begin our way up to the Ocean View Summit
We were now in what is known as upland forest and soon to be in chaparral terrain
This stretch of the hike is one of my favorites
We hiked through a mixed forest of Madrone
Douglas fir and flowering plants that were just past their bloom
Spring and summer wildflower blooms on the ridge are beautiful
Mature Madrone is a beautiful tree that will seasonally shed its bark and reveal its smooth bare trunk in light browns and greens
Madrones often grow in beautiful twists and turns to optimize sunlight for growth
so they are some times called the refrigerator tree
About halfway up to the summit is an unusually large Madrone that I call the Magic Madrone partly because of its unusually large
straight trunk and welcoming presence just off the trail
We soon came into chaparral country where the terrain is dominated by various kinds of Manzanita and other low growing plants such a chaparral Pea
The occasional Knob Cone pine struggles out of the chaparral
This is lizard and snake country and you might see several varieties of garter snake
The occasional rattler will sometimes be seen sunning itself on the road
the Middle Ridge Road is white sandstone and limestone
which makes for a very hot hike in the summer
Carlisle and I arrived at the summit and climbed up to a log that sits off the road

"The Notorious" captured the lightweight title from Eddie Alvarez - the fighter who dethroned RDA in July 2016
Dos Anjos ultimately lost out on the pay-per-view payday by not waiting on McGregor like UFC Lightweight Michael Chandler has been doing for the last two years
with the former champion explaining why he decided to take up a title defense with Alvarez in the first place
"Thinking back, I could take the chance of like, 'Okay, now since I was a champion, he fought Diaz, he lost to Diaz, now I wanna fight Conor...' I could do that, but I just wanna move the things [for the lightweight division]," Dos Anjos told Submission Radio
I don't regret about anything I've done
I think that the division's there and I can't lock up the division

Undetected refractive errors (REs) in children can lead to irreversible vision loss
This study aimed to show the proportions of REs in French children using cycloplegic refraction
Multicentre cross-sectional retrospective study including children with cycloplegic refraction and without associated ocular conditions from 2015 to 2018 in French eye clinics
The analysis included 48,163 children (mean age: 7.75 years
The proportion of each RE was as follows: emmetropia (− 0.50 < Spherical Equivalent (SE) ≤ + 2.0; 58.3%)
hyperopia (+ 2.0 \(<\) SE \(\le\)+5; 17.2%)
myopia (− 6 \(\le\) SE \(\le\)− 0.50; 15.5%)
Anisometropia (SE difference ≥ 1.5) was found in 5.0%
Functional amblyopia in children attending primary school (aged over 6 years) was encountered in 2.7%
Symptoms of eye strain were frequent (70%) but not specific to any RE
REs are frequently found in French children and may remain undetected in the absence of symptoms of eye strain
Few studies have investigated REs in children using cycloplegic refraction
which has been shown to be the gold standard for RE assessment
Visual impairment is a major risk factor for amblyopia in these children
demonstrating the need to detect and manage REs during early childhood
The secondary objective was to evaluate the prevalence of amblyopia
This is a multicentre cross-sectional retrospective study including French children aged 2 to 12 years
Clinical data were collected from January 2015 to December 2018 from seven eye clinics (Versailles
Nice) considered as primary care centres and dedicated to REs
patients are evaluated by an orthoptist who asks the parents for any general or ophthalmological personal history and then performs a best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) assessment
the ophthalmologist performs slit-lamp and fundus examination
All children are examined using cycloplegic drops as recommended by the French Association for Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus
dyschromatopsia); missing autorefraction data; absence of cycloplegia; ophthalmic symptoms other than those of eye strain (e.g
This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the French Society of Ophthalmology (Institutional Review Board: 0008855) and was conducted in accordance with the ethical principles of the Declaration of Helsinki
Informed consent was not required for this study according to French law
The following data were extracted automatically from each patient data file (Ophtix© software
OPHTEL®): demographic characteristics including age at examination
the use of cycloplegic drops (cyclopentolate
and prescription of glasses at the end of the consultation
Patients were included if cycloplegic refraction was performed at the first visit
or within 6 months after the first visit in the case of delayed cycloplegic refraction
The database contained anonymised administrative and ophthalmological data which were divided into quantitative (BCVA
refraction of prescribed glasses) and qualitative sections (ophthalmological medical history
Quantitative variables were analysed directly
all words referring to ophthalmic disorders were excluded
Each child was first examined by an orthoptist who reported in each data file if there were any symptoms
sensation of decreased visual acuity at distance or near fixation
difficulties in seeing the blackboard or reading) were reported
data was included in the “symptoms” section of each medical record
Statistical analyses were performed using the R software package version 3.6.0 (Rstudio®
Data were reported as the mean (SD) or median (interquartile range)
For statistical independence purposes and based on the absence of significant differences between SEs for the two eyes
except for anisometropia for which both eyes had to be taken into account
In total, 48,163 records met the inclusion criteria (mean age: 8 years, range: 2–12 years) (Fig. 1).
Boxplots of refractive errors according to age. Boxes indicate the interquartile range, central line: median value, whiskers: max and min values.
Evolution of the proportions of each refractive error according to age
Best-corrected visual acuity according to age
Lastly, we analysed the visual symptoms according to the different REs (Table 3)
A sensation of blurry vision was the most frequent symptom for all types of REs
from 62.3% for high hyperopia to 79.3% for myopia
Headache was the second most common symptom experienced by patients but much more rarely (ranging from 6.2 to 11.6%)
this is the first study of a large dataset of French children using cycloplegic refraction
which are major risk factors for amblyopia
the use of cycloplegic refraction in the current study is consistent with the recommendations of previous publications in order to reduce interpretation bias
and not only following the child’s complaints
this represents a significant percentage of avoidable vision loss
Efforts have yet to be made to detect any RE at risk for amblyopia and we believe that systematic screening in pre-school children would be helpful
REs are frequently found in our cohort of French children
and the current findings highlight the need for systematic screening for REs in pre-school children in order to prevent irreversible vision loss and avoid low school performance
This is the largest public health study of REs using cycloplegic refraction in children
The datasets generated and/or analysed during this study are available from the corresponding author on reasonable request

“This road is very dangerous and has been restricted since 2016
Ponta do Sol City Council cleaned the escarpment with the collaboration of the Regional Roads Directorate and removed a large number of large rocks that were at risk of falling

Estrada dos Anjosrockfall
I specifically looked to see that this road is restricted and I saw no such sign
I had driven on the road a few days earlier without realizing where I was going and had wondered if I missed seeing a sign so I looked when we walked
I did not park as I realized that once I saw the waterfall I had made a mistake
I had driven to find parking in the Ponto do Sol tunnel but it was full and once I got to the end it was not possible to possible to turn around
there should be some good signs before strong condemnation of all tourists there

Former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos wants to ride out the rest of his career at welterweight
Dos Anjos (32-16 MMA, 21-14 UFC) has bounced between 155 and 170 pounds in the past seven years. His most recent appearance came at UFC 299 in March when he lost a unanimous decision to Mateusz Gamrot
But now dos Anjos, who's ranked No. 14 in the UFC's lightweight rankings, intends on moving back up to welterweight
For you LW out there calling me out I don't compete at LW now on
There's lots of fights that make sense to me at 170
I want to fight in July @ufc get me back in that octagon."
Dos Anjos' first run at welterweight included three straight wins over Tarec Saffiedine
which resulted in an interim title fight vs
He lost a competitive unanimous decision and is 5-5 at 170 pounds
His most recent win came in a second-round submission of Bryan Barberena in December 2022

Rafael dos Anjos kept receipts
and he finally cashed in eight years later
After he got Nate Diaz as a new opponent
McGregor took aim at dos Anjos and questioned the severity of the injury that knocked him out of their fight
the doctor would slap me and say what are you doing kid
A post shared by MMA Fighting (@mmafighting)
After hearing that McGregor pulled out of a fight for the first time since joining the UFC roster due to an injury
dos Anjos was right there to return the favor
It’s just a bruise, take some ibuprofen. https://t.co/HknKEkvTD6
Credit to dos Anjos holding onto that one since 2016; he finally got a chance to offer McGregor the same advice the Irish superstar offered him all those years ago
While dos Anjos was actually dealing with a broken foot
McGregor hasn’t disclosed the injury he suffered that forced a massive change to the UFC 303 card on June 29
McGregor also hasn’t stated how long the injury may keep him sidelined and UFC hasn’t officially rescheduled the matchup with Chandler yet
Few competitors have fought a tougher slate over the course of their career than Rafael Dos Anjos
The 37-year-old has stepped into the Octagon 30 times across two divisions
amassing a 19-11 record that includes a lightweight title victory
and an interim welterweight title fight appearance
He’s shared the cage with eight men that have held UFC gold during their careers and has spent the last decade facing ranked opponents in both the 155-pound and 170-pound weight classes
as well as “the guy you have to beat to prove you belong in the title conversation” in two different divisions
and after the longest absence of his career
Dos Anjos is champing at the bit to finally step into the Octagon again this weekend
How To Watch UFC 272 In Your Country
“I’m dreaming of being back again and winning a fight,” said Dos Anjos
who will now face fellow Brazilian Renato Moicano in Saturday night’s UFC 272 co-main event
Initially slated to face emerging threat Rafael Fiziev in the main event of the UFC Fight Night event on February 19
the bout was pushed back to this weekend’s pay-per-view card when Fiziev’s visa was delayed
it was announced that Fiziev had tested positive for COVID-19 and was forced out of the postponed pairing
opening the door for Moicano to step up in his stead and fight on consecutive pay-per-view events after submitting Alexander Hernandez last month at UFC 271 in Houston
“You look at my record and you see if I’m the type of guy that picks my fights,” he said
It’s been 16 months since Dos Anjos has been inside the Octagon
Ahead of what was supposed to be a date with Islam Makhachev in November 2020
Dos Anjos opted to prepare in Rio de Janeiro
venturing home to work with Andre Pederneiras and the team at Nova Uniao
and the former lightweight titleholder delivered a strong performance in a five-round victory over Paul Felder
who stepped in on short notice when Makhachev was forced out of the contest
he broached the idea of moving to Rio for a couple years with his wife
the family packed their things and headed to Brazil
“It’s been good,” Dos Anjos said of the return home
“It wasn’t a good year because I couldn’t compete
but I hurt my meniscus and had to have it removed
I have great doctors and therapists here and I’m 100 percent now
“I was putting together my own team — I was being my own general — and I felt that I needed somebody else to worry about that for me,” continued the Brazilian veteran
who had been running his own camps and working with striking coach Jason Parillo in Huntingon Beach
California for the last several years prior to moving back to Brazil
“I’m giving my best to training and I don’t want to worry about anything else
Fight By Fight Preview | UFC 272: Covington vs Masvidal
I want to try doing a camp with Andre Pederneiras at Nova Uniao,’ and Andre is a great guy; he takes care of everything
He gets really good feedback from all the coaches
‘I don’t want 10 years from now to regret that we didn’t move to Brazil,’” he added
We’ve got a lot of bodies here at Nova Uniao — guys that are hungry and want to help
Training in Brazil with Pederneiras and the Nova Uniao crew also strengthened his resolve when it came to making the shift back to lightweight
something he hadn’t done in four years prior to his bout with Felder
After losing the lightweight title to Eddie Alvarez in the summer of 2016
Dos Anjos faced Tony Ferguson in an entertaining clash in Mexico City four months later
landing on the wrong side of the results in the Fight of the Night-winning bout
Making the 155-pound limit had long been a challenge for the thickly built Brazilian
where he instantly became a player in the title picture
He won his first three fights against fighters stationed increasingly higher up in the rankings
and Robbie Lawler to land a chance to fight for the interim title opposite Colby Covington
That loss was followed by a similar defeat to Kamaru Usman
with setbacks to Leon Edwards and Michael Chiesa coming after a quality stoppage victory over Kevin Lee
Order UFC 272 For Any Device
The promise of his three-fight winning streak to begin his welterweight venture shifted to a tough run of results against elite competition
“(The Michael Chiesa) fight is one that I asked for
but it was a very terrible weight cut for me,” said Dos Anjos
and I really felt that I needed to make some adjustments
“I spoke to Jose Aldo and he told me that he had a hard time to cut to 145
‘but now I make 135 pretty easy.’ He put me in touch with his doctor in Brazil
I flew out from California to Rio to meet with the doctor

“I’ve changed my lifestyle completely,” he said
I changed my lifestyle and the cut for Paul Felder was not hard at all; it was way easier than the fight with Chiesa
My last cut for the fight I was a back-up fighter for — (Dustin) Poirier and Conor (McGregor
With the challenges of 2021 behind him and feeling as healthy as he has in years
Dos Anjos understands many view him in that “gatekeeper to title contention” role his scuttled fights with Makhachev and Fiziev cast him in
but he’s not ready to be pushed out of the title conversation yet just
but I want to show that I still have what it takes to become a champion,” he said
you have to pass RDA.’ I don’t feel bad about that
but I want to be there — I want to be champion again; I know I have what it takes
I know I still have one last title run in me,” he continued
“I was looking for something different (this fight)
but I don’t think these guys want to fight — they want to play chess matches
Not that he’s ever been one to sit around and wait for the perfect matchup
he agreed to fight Makhachev three different times when the surging contender was working his way up the divisional ladder
signed on to face Fiziev when no one was rushing to stand across from him
and has spent his entire career facing an absolute Murderers Row of competition
after more than a year away and yet another opponent change
Dos Anjos is finally set to return to action
“I’m thankful to be healthy and I want to be active this year,” he said

As a Black girl from a modest family in Olimpia
the first barrier Cássia dos Anjos could not accept was the gap between the education she received in public school and what she needed to get into higher education
my sister managed to pay for a yearlong prep course for university exams
and I noticed that I really lagged behind my peers,” she said
Not having been approved in her first attempt
Rita asked the course coordinator if she could attend classes for another 6 months
she was approved to study biological physics at Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho in São Paulo
So I wanted to study biology but really fell in love with physics during the prep course
So I thought biological physics was the perfect choice,” she said
During the course, however, physics spoke louder, and Cássia dos Anjos answered. She went on to earn a master’s degree from the University of São Paulo, studying integrable field theory and solitons

Cássia dos Anjos studied cosmic rays—atomic particles that cross Earth from beyond the galaxy
To seek out where cosmic ray particles come from
she studied starbursts—extremely luminous galaxies that are source candidates for these particles traveling at almost the speed of light
Immediately after finishing her doctorate in 2014, Cássia dos Anjos began teaching modern physics at UFPR. Three years later, she was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the City University of New York
“The neighborhood looked like the Everybody Hates Chris TV show
there were fewer Black people…the overwhelming majority of the faculty was white.”
Cássia dos Anjos has had a larger public presence since her research earned her a Serrapilheira Institute grant in 2018 and a L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science (Brazil) award in 2020
She uses the visibility from her prizes to call attention to inequalities in gender and race that pervade Brazilian science
She’s working on funding for projects in which she can work with young girls in science to get them to try their hand at real research
“I feel it’s my responsibility as a woman of color to help open the path to other women of color in my field,” she said
