Link Image: Mitsuhiro Arita/Wizards of the CoastEventsGen ConPokémon TCG legend Mitsuhiro Arita on illustrating his first Magic: The Gathering cardHow Bloomburrow’s Lumra
LinkIt’s hard to overstate the impact artist Mitsuhiro Arita has had on trading card games. Nearly 30 years ago, as a member of the original design team on the Pokémon Trading Card Game
Arita contributed to the look and feel of the franchise’s original 150 monsters
He also authored the art for some of the most iconic Pokémon cards
images that have global recognition — including some of the first interpretations of Pikachu and Charizard
Arita has remained one of the Pokémon TCG’s most prolific illustrators
while occasionally contributing art for other card games such as the Shin Megami Tensei Trading Card Game
and even the Power Rangers Collectible Card Game
the massive elemental bear highlights the detailed approach that makes Arita one of the most cherished TCG artists in the world
Polygon was able to share questions with Arita ahead of Bloomburrow’s official tabletop release on Aug
What follows are his professionally translated answers
which have been lightly edited for clarity and concision
Polygon: Was working on a Magic card different from your typical process with the other card games you have contributed to
it’s very common to have detailed checks at every stage of the drawing process
Character consistency in particular is strictly controlled
I’m used to making changes all the way through the process
Usually you present the piece for detailed feedback around 60-70% of the way through
so you can make adjustments before starting on the final details
the most thorough checks were at the conceptualization stage
so I realized I had to make sure things were spot-on from the beginning
Can you describe your process in creating the art for this Magic card
I was asked to create the piece using sketches by Matt Stewart as a reference
the process was like any other job — I’d draw the rough
and paint the final image using software [such as Photoshop and Painter]
What was your opinion of Magic: The Gathering’s art style before you were asked to illustrate a card for the game
I’ve always liked the feel of high fantasy
and have wanted an opportunity of drawing in that style
Can you describe Magic’s reputation in Japan
which are aimed primarily at the collectors’ market
it’s not just card games but all games played face-to-face which are losing ground
I think a lot of it stems from how smartphones are eating up any bits of free time in which you’d otherwise have played a game like that
is it hard transitioning your art style to other card games
When I’m drawing, I usually like to put myself in the shoes of the fans. I think to myself “What kind of Arita artwork would I want to see?” Of course, each job provides its own challenges and you need to adapt your vision, but I didn’t go out of my way to do anything specifically different. If you look at my website’s blog
I think you can see how varied my style has been over the years
his art from the original Pokémon TCG base set feels noticeably simpler
and two-dimensional compared to his current style
and Charizard mostly feature the Pokémon in profile
This approach is not at all indicative of who Arita is
The art he did for the Power Rangers CCG could be mistaken for stills from the television show
exists in a highly detailed and lived-in environment
His takes on Pokémon and Magic almost could be mistaken for photorealism
if the subject matter of both games weren’t so steeped in fiction and fantasy
giving his illustrations a practically tangible weight that in turn makes the cards themselves feel unique
Your work has appeared across so many card games over the years
it’s a wonder you haven’t worked on Magic until now
or brands that you still hope to work on for the first time
Magic has always been high on my list of card games which I’d like to do work for, so I was extremely happy to get the opportunity to be involved on this project. I’d done work for Culdcept before
It was the first job in my career when I got to go all-out on a series of high-fantasy artworks
How important is understanding a new game before designing art for it
It’s important to try and understand that the perspective of hardcore fans is not an entirely objective perspective
I think that introducing the perspective of an outsider can help bring about positive innovation
I’ve been involved with [Pokémon] for a long time
but [my work] still feels very fresh [to the fans]
I think that having multiple product lines which employ various styles has helped to change and progress it over time
how do you tailor your approach to fit the specific lore and themes in that game’s identity
And I always keep in mind the visual impact while I think through these things
How much did you have to learn about Magic before working on your first Magic card
I like to keep my work feeling fresh and original
so I tend to avoid looking at other artists’ work
I prepared for this project just as I would for any other project — I didn’t really do anything differently
Arita’s career in art was an unexpected one
Not only was Pokémon TCG his first professional job as an artist
prior to that assignment he had very little formal training in art or drawing
following a natural talent from a young age
and have you ever sought some formal training once your career in arts began to take shape
I did attend sumi-ink painting classes at a cultural center
Watching the instructor do live demonstrations
I came to understand how water and pigment behave inside the body of the brush
I also took all five of the workshops at the Liquitex School
where I learned about the history and special chemical properties of paint
That knowledge turned out to be a very useful foundation for when I started working in watercolor and other liquid-based media later on
As I didn’t have a comprehensive art education
I’d only had limited experience with [legacy] art materials
Every time I tried my hand at a new medium — watercolor
oil paint — I was able to increase my understanding by paying close attention to the work of my predecessors
how do you continue learning at this stage in your career
When I’m grappling with new subject matter
As Arita’s career expanded beyond his roots in Pokémon TCG
he eventually had to adjust his style to new stories
These new projects also brought with them new audiences and expectations
and for a mostly self-taught artist like Arita
this came with the unique challenge of evolving and adapting beyond the potential comfort zone of his home within Pokémon
Do you need to make an effort to evolve and explore new styles
or does it come naturally through the work you’re assigned across different games
I actually find it more natural and not at all laborious to continue to change and take on new challenges
I’m convinced that I won’t catch anyone’s interest unless I draw with an intense level of focus
One of the things that has contributed most to my changing creative style has been the fact that I’ve worked on so many different kinds of projects
in so many different domains over the years
How do you handle feedback and critique from fans and colleagues
You’d think that you needed a distinct and consistent style and set of themes
if you wanted to be an established artist but
I haven’t really been criticized for not following that path
The fans are very much up for the adventure
and they enjoy following me on that journey
I find it slightly curious that fans will seek out some of my art pieces
even when they have no consistency with the rest of my work
I really appreciate the open-mindedness of my clients and my fans
Can you recall an instance where constructive criticism significantly influenced one of your pieces
The idea that you don’t have to draw things as they look in real life really freed me up as an artist
the artist behind the original Charizard card and so much more
is getting his own Secret Lair drop.Mitsuhiro Arita is no stranger to card games
He's the artist responsible for the paintings on innumerable cards from the original release of the Pokemon Trading Card Game
including the highly saught after Charizard - but now he's painting a different kind of dragon thanks to a Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair drop
and we've got the first look at all four cards from it
Flip through the gallery below to see all the cards in Arita's Secret Lair:
This isn't the first time Arita has painted a Magic card, but his previous addition was a single, borderless art version of Lumra, Bellow of the Woods from last year's Bloomburrow set
So to get four new cards all at once shortly after that is a big jump
Wizards of the Coast describes this drop on its store page as such: "With nearly 30 years of experience creating beloved art for trading card games
Mitsuhiro Arita’s work has become some of the most recognizable in the world
His first collaboration with Magic: The Gathering was on a borderless Lumra
Bellow of the Woods released in 2024’s Bloomburrow
the legendary artist returns to showcase his iconic creature design across four remarkable cards."
As usual with Secret Lair drops, this one will be available on the Secret Lair website in non-foil for $29.99 and foil for $39.99
with both only being made available while supplies last starting on Monday
Secret Lairs can tend to sell out fast these days
a point of irration within the community since WOTC switched from a timed print-to-order system last year
so if you're looking to snag them you'll want to be there as soon as they go live

it’s time for Arita Porcelain to join the collection
Here’s the new Seiko Presage Craftsmanship Series SPB445
The latter is where things become really classic
with a strong focus on Japan’s traditional artistic crafts
Made in collaboration with some of the best artisans in the country
these watches are all about handcrafted dials
Even though it might feel identical to enamel
Arita Porcelain must not be confused with it
Arita is a small town located on the Japanese island of Kyushu
known for its overglaze “enamelled” decoration and products
the result is fairly different from what we’re used to seeing with enamel
Made by Master craftsman Hiroyuki Hashiguchi and his colleagues in Arita
the dials are produced by molding the base material (clay-based) to the exact shape of the dial’s surface
The second firing bonds the glaze to the dial and brings out the subtle blue tint
holes for the hands and date window are made
The result is a dial with more depth a more “milky” surface than enamel
the dial keeps things relatively simple to focus on the artistic craft first
Simple bar indexes have been used so as not to detract from the porcelain’s lustre
The choice of having a 24-hour sub-dial is deliberate
in order to reveal the depth of the material – something a simple time-only watch would show
Blue-toned hands and printings complement this handsome base dial
The rest of the watch remains in line with the Presage models of last year
slightly more modern case design than what the collection offered in the past
Measuring 40.6mm diameter and 12.5mm thickness
the Presage Arita Porcelain SPB445 comes in a stainless steel case with super-hard coating
It is secured to the wrist by a 5-link steel bracelet with folding clasp
This automatic movement runs at a 3Hz frequency and offers a weekend-proof power reserve
Released as part of the permanent collection, the Seiko Presage Craftsmanship Series Arita Porcelain Dial SPB445 is priced at EUR 2,000. For more details, please visit Seikowatches.com
“minimum claimed precision of +25/-15 seconds per day” for EUR 2,000
It has a dressy porcelain dial and blued hands
that’s a lot of money for a garbage movement
Small seconds would have been a better choice than a 24 hour sub-dial
Now if that 24 hour subdial was an independent GMT hand they would really have something
I’m not the biggest fan of Seiko watches
I know that they are good timepieces for the money

The team was funded by the DOE Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO)
Through Energy I-Corps training and perspectives
the team was able to shift their research focus to one with promising market viability
the team is advancing biofuel technologies that could help meet growing global demand for sustainable fuels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
and even animal manure can be converted into usable biofuels like ethanol
and biogas that can serve as alternatives to traditional fossil fuels
Because they come from renewable resources and can reduce greenhouse gas emissions
biofuels are considered more environmentally friendly.
Global demand for biofuels is projected to increase by nearly 30% by 2028. However, many biofuel technologies are limited by obstacles like high production costs and low availability of feedstocks—the raw materials that can be used to produce energy. In addition, many biofuel technologies have not yet achieved net-zero or net-negative carbon emissions.
To bridge these gaps, Quiroz-Arita and Myllenbeck joined forces with industry mentor Paul Bryan to create the CUBES project, an effort to identify feedstocks and technologies that can not only perform efficiently on an industrial scale, but also provide significant environmental benefits.
“We wanted to show that biofuel technologies can be economically viable and environmentally sustainable,” said Quiroz-Arita, who specializes in wastewater engineering and biorefineries and has industry experience in the conversion of biomass to biofuels and bioproducts through anaerobic reactors.
As part of the Energy I-Corps program, the team interviewed 82 refineries, consultants, non-profit organizations, and farmers to gain insights into the market needs and pain points related to biofuels.
“Over 90% of our stakeholders told us that cellulosic biofuels—fuels produced from grass, wood, or crop leftovers—are not yet economically viable,” said Quiroz-Arita. “However, they also told us that cow manure is a reliable and low-cost feedstock, and some stakeholders call biogas a new gold rush.”
Based on this feedback, the team shifted their focus to anaerobic digestion, a process that uses microbes to break down manure, turning it into biogas. This biogas can then be used as renewable natural gas to generate electricity and heat, or as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
The team completed the Energy I-Corps program in May 2023 and thanks to funding from BETO, the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and internal Sandia investments, the team continues to work towards enabling economically viable and environmentally beneficial biofuels.
“The Energy I-Corps experience was pivotal in shaping the team’s approach to technology commercialization,” said Quiroz-Arita. “Every scientist should go through this program so that, before they invest research and development efforts in a new technology, they first identify their stakeholders’ needs.”
Quiroz-Arita and the CUBES team are reengineering anaerobic digesters with technology from Sandia that will help achieve BETO’s goals of producing 3 billion gallons of domestic SAF by 2030 and 35 billion gallons by 2050. In addition, the team’s work can help achieve DOE’s goal to displace more than 70% of greenhouse emissions.
The CUBES team continues their biofuels research and development, preparing new proposals and exploring further collaborations to bring their technologies to market. By staying attuned to industry needs and focusing on sustainable solutions, the CUBES project is well-positioned to contribute to the transition to a carbon-neutral economy.

Deriving its name from a small town in Kyushu, a region on the southwest coast of Japan, this fresh 40.6mm iteration comes fitted with a porcelain white dial, accentuated with blue accented hands and indices. At the center, a recessed concentric ring pattern as well as a 6 o’clock subdial can be found, both serve to demonstrate Seiko’s expert craftsmanship given the incredible difficulty it is to work on porcelain.

Seiko now returns with two time-only watches that are part of the regular collection
the new Presage Arita Porcelain SPB293J1 and SPB319J1
As we explained already when talking about the previous editions with porcelain dials
Arita porcelain is an ancient Japanese craft named after a small town located on the Japanese island of Kyushu
porcelain clay was found in the vicinity transforming the area into a hub for Japanese porcelain
Early wares used underglaze blue decoration
Arita was at the forefront as Japan developed overglaze “enamelled” decoration in a range of bright colours
It wasn’t long before the porcelain products made in Arita became prized all over Japan for the high quality of their artistry
it was being exported all around the world
dispatched by sea from Arita’s port of Imari
porcelain made in Arita is uniquely Japanese
and so it seems fitting that Seiko has chosen to use this material for the dials of its new Presage watches
But there are a few important things to say about the SPB293J1 and SPB319J1 that Seiko presents today
most previous Arita porcelain watches had a specific display with power reserve and date-by-hand (with the exception of the SPB095 launched in 2019
many previous versions were released as limited editions
these characteristics aren’t part of the new models anymore
Both new watches of the Seiko Presage Arita Porcelain collection share the same case
and the same movement and only differ when it comes to the strap/bracelet and the dial colour
no confusion is possible when looking at them; they are genuinely part of the Presage collection
the proportions of the stainless steel case are the same with its 40.5mm diameter
a thickness (that we’d like to see reduced a bit
for the sake of elegance) of 12.4mm and an L2L of 48.8mm
brushed twisted lugs with an internal polished bevel and an overall sense of restrained elegance
The watches still feature the usual conical crown and are topped by a dual-curved sapphire crystal with AR coating inside
The caseback is screwed and features a see-through window
despite being elegant (almost dressy) watches
these new Seiko Presage Arita Porcelain are water-resistant to 100 metres
the pièce de résistance with these Presage watches is the dial
Crafted under the supervision of Arita porcelain craftsman Hiroyuki Hashiguchi
they are executed in the traditional way by specialised artisans
An Arita porcelain dial is made of highly durable porcelain material that is more than four times harder than usual porcelain
It undergoes a casting process using ultra-high-precision moulds and is fired at a high temperature of 1,300 degrees
The dials are then glazed and fired multiple times to complete the highly challenging process – not far from a classic enamel process
Another difference between these two models is how the watches are secured to the wrist
The white SPB293J1 is worn on a 3-link steel bracelet with a folding clasp
while the blue SPB319J1 is worn on a black leather strap with blue stitching and a folding clasp
Inside the case of both Presage Arita Porcelain models is the well-known calibre 6R31
A relatively modern engine from the mid-range collection
this automatic movement beats at 3Hz and offers a comfortable 70h power reserve
It is lightly decorated with brushed bridges and stripes on the rotor
The new Seiko Presage Arita Porcelain SPB293J1 and SPB319J1 will be available from the permanent collection from June 2022. Both will be priced at EUR 1,750. For more details, please visit seikowatches.com
i really don’t understand Seiko’s obsession with 40+ mm watches
they look awful on the vast majority of wrists
meant “40+ mm dress watches” 🙂 (but there’s no edit function on this godawful comment section
erase ‘Presage Automatic,’ reduce the ‘Seiko’ font and mate the dial to the LE KS case with 6L movement you’d have a cut-price Breguet
still that dubious 6R movement and a beautiful dial covered in branding tosh…
Ralph Waldo Emerson: A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds
I’ve got the older 6R Cocktail Time
Caliber Corner gives unverified measurements of 27.4 mm x 5.25 mm
The former’s fine…it also suggests it’ll fit just FINE in a trimmer case
So while I love the dials…the tonal shading on the blue dial gives a better sense of depth…I don’t love the movements
but the complaint about “branding tosh” is poppycock to me
There are three clean lines of printed text here
and I vastly prefer that to a more sterile dial
lest the dial get boring and loose character
I would indeed have appreciated a 39x47x11mm case over the 40x48x12mm case
but in my experience these Presage cases wear brilliantly and comfortably
My only gripe with Seiko’s white dialed enamel / porcelain / guilloché dials in these presages is that they seem to utterly refuse to use heat blued steel hands to complement these
I’m not a fan of the semi-translucent hand set they insist on using here
WATCHPRO
Seiko craftspeople have reworked a delicate Japanese porcelain so that it is hard enough to be used for watch dials
Arita porcelain has a history going back more than 400 years
since clay was discovered on the Japanese island of Kyushu
The region became famous for its porcelain
used worldwide for fine arts and all kinds of tableware
It was not at all an obvious choice for a watch
as it is delicate and difficult to work with
which makes a point of looking at both the artistry and nature of its home country for inspiration
Seiko artisans managed to develop a new type of Arita porcelain that is four times harder than usual
allowing it enough strength and flexibility to be used in a watch
The new watches are in the dressy Presage collection and form part of Seiko’s Craftmanship series
celebrating all types of Japanese craftspeople
Shining a light on the most classic Presage collection is a timely offer from Seiko as tastes begin to shift from chunkier sports watches to slimmer
The Presage Arita Porcelain ‘Concentric’ has a recessed concentric ring around the centre and a recessed sub dial at 6 o’clock – an especially difficult feat for the dial makers
and a demonstration of their confidence in both their skills and the toughness of the new porcelain
The dial is a blue-white colour and due to the heat at which the porcelain is fired
each watch will have its own unique subtle dimpling pattern
even if it is barely visible in the photos
The 40.6mm stainless-steel case has a scratch-resistant coating and is water-resistant to 100m
It is powered by Seiko’s in-house automatic 6R5H movement
The movement is visible through a sapphire crystal caseback
The Presage Arita Porcelain ‘Concentric’ is available to pre-order at seikoboutique.co.uk
As one of Wall Street’s top stock analysts
it might be hard to believe that Darin Arita’s ’93 academic career got off to a rocky start
Yet it was through his struggles that he came to recognize and appreciate just how influential the support of those around him could be
he’s returning the favor by supporting students’ ambitions
With a scholastic level well below that of his classmates
Arita was put into a remedial class in the first grade
He quickly overcame his deficiencies through the efforts of his teacher and his mother’s focus on alternative types of lessons and home learning
Arita entered Punahou in the fourth grade and
despite being younger than most of his classmates
he flourished with the support of his fourth-grade teachers
Arita followed his aspirations and went on to work at large financial institutions in Washington
He has since been recognized as a top stock analyst on Wall Street and a successful corporate executive in his field
Though far from his first-grade remedial class
Arita still reflects on his early school years and looks back at that time with a deep sense of gratitude for the love
support and encouragement from his parents
High Endowed Financial Aid Fund to provide young students with the opportunity to dream big and to achieve their fullest potential
He named the fund after his fourth-grade teachers
borrowing the first letter of their last names: Jane Affleck
Arita dedicated the fund to his parents and all of his teachers for their educational
“Their support was critical at many points of my journey,” he says
Arita hopes this endowed fund will help relieve some of the financial burden of parents in need and remind students to be grateful for their parents and teachers and to aim high
After having a blast at last year’s 24th Reunion bonding with classmates over lū‘au prep
the member of the Class of 1993 returned to campus during his 25th Reunion this summer
laughing over old stories shared together and learning new ones forged since graduation.” The class raised over $430,000 in gifts that support Punahou’s students
Arita is humbled to play a role in supporting the School
High Fund was an opportunity to provide aid to other students starting at Punahou around the same grade level that I entered
offered a nice moment to commemorate the fund.”

Seiko continues with this theme and presents the new Presage Arita Porcelain Dial Limited Edition SPB171
this time with a very elegant white and blue colour scheme – so-called Suigetsu
What is Arita Porcelain and why has Seiko chosen to use it
Following the 2019 editions, for instance, the SPB093 we went hands-on with here
Seiko enlarges its Arita Porcelain themed collection with a new model in slightly different colours than the previous versions
The 2019 edition had a white porcelain dial with black indexes/tracks/hands and a red accent at 12 o’clock
The 2020 reference SPB171 takes the best of its predecessor and adds (at least to me) an even more elegant white-and-blue colour scheme
The design of the new Seiko Presage Arita Porcelain Dial Limited Edition SPB171 is inspired by the Japanese tradition of Suigetsu
which celebrates the beauty of the Moon when it is reflected in water
has been decorated with blue hands and markers
perfectly contrasting with the milky-white and delicate background
Also new to this model is a railroad minute track
The Arita porcelain dials are produced by master craftsman Hiroyuki Hashiguchi and his colleagues at an experienced manufacturer in Arita that has been making porcelain since 1830
To give the dials the strength required for a watch
the craftsmen use a type of Arita porcelain specially formulated to be harder and more durable than traditional porcelain
A very precise casting mould is used to achieve the difficult task of giving each dial the precise dimensions required to fit inside a wristwatch
While in traditional Arita porcelain a special glaze is applied to create its distinctive subtle blue sheen
transparent glaze is used for the dial of this new watch to reveal the natural whiteness of the porcelain material
This creates a sharp contrast with the blue hands
the specifications are the same as most Presage watches
with a stainless steel case measuring 40.6mm in diameter with brushed and polished surfaces
The watch is powered by the automatic calibre 6R27
with a 4Hz frequency and a 45h power reserve
It displays the time (H-M-S) as well as the date at 6 o’clock and a power reserve indication at 9 o’clock
The movement is visible through the caseback and the watch is protected by a sapphire crystal
The new Seiko Presage Arita Porcelain Dial Limited Edition SPB171 is a limited edition of 2,000, available worldwide from Seiko Boutiques and selected Seiko retail partners, as of June 2020. It will be priced at EUR 2,100. More details at www.seikowatches.com
When I see a Seiko so beautiful and at that price I can’t help wonder how much our swiss and german friends are overcharging us because we’re foolish passionate watch lovers
Even if you don’t recognize the name of artist Mitsuhiro Arita
you’ve almost certainly seen his work
He’s been illustrating Pokémon Trading Card Game cards for more than 20 years—ever since the very first cards were introduced in Japan in 1996
His art can be seen on more than 500 cards
including some of the most memorable cards in the history of the game
Arita’s legacy and impact on the Pokémon TCG—and on the world of Pokémon in general—is profound
We recently had a chance to sit down with Mr
Though he typically works out of his home studio
he was kind enough to meet with us at the offices of Creatures Inc.
the company responsible for development of the Pokémon TCG
Like other artists who illustrate cards for the Pokémon TCG
Arita is not a full-time employee of Creatures
allowing him the freedom to work on many other projects as well
Arita says Pokémon has been the main focus of his artistic career
but he would never have guessed that would be the case when he began
it took about a year for Pokémon to really take off after it debuted
Arita essentially had no idea that Pokémon would be the global phenomenon it is now
“When I first began working on the Pokémon Trading Card Game
I had no expectations I’d be working on it over 20 years later,” he says
Asked if he would he have charged a little more for his work had he known
Arita came to the interview carrying an incredible testimonial to his experience with Pokémon: a thick binder containing every card he’s ever worked on
and I really like all of them,” he says
Flipping through it is like watching a history of the Pokémon TCG
Arita’s long-lasting influence really hits home when the original Charizard and Pikachu from Pokémon TCG: Base Set appear in the first page of the binder
“I always thought that I’d probably never be able to draw cards that people liked as much as those two,” he says
“But I’ve gotten a lot of good feedback on a recent Mewtwo
so maybe there’s a chance!” He assures us that he doesn’t feel increased pressure when receiving assignments to draw these more famous Pokémon
A lot has changed in the 20 years since Mr
Arita began illustrating cards for the Pokémon TCG
He describes what it was like when he began—before the Pokémon TCG even launched
the first Pokémon video games came out on the Game Boy in monochrome
with a really rudimentary pixel art,” he says
pretty much all I had as reference were those sprites—the pixel art of the Pokémon.” It’s safe to say that by creating his own artistic vision of these simple graphics
Arita contributed to how some Pokémon are portrayed today
To make sure his artwork continues to resonate with Pokémon fans
Arita spends a decent amount of time playing the video games and watching the animated series
He admits that his busy schedule doesn’t always afford him time to finish every game
he doesn’t play the Pokémon TCG as much as he would like
“I don’t really have any friends near where I live
so I don’t have a lot of chances,” he explains
when Creatures was a much smaller company and we were still just making the game
a lot of the time we would order a pizza after our meeting and play.”
To keep current with the look and feel of the Pokémon TCG
Arita studies and practices drawing Pokémon on an ongoing basis
He recognizes that one of his strengths is focusing on his own art style and not spending too much time seeing what other artists are doing
“The Pokémon Trading Card Game has always been consistent in that their reason to have all these illustrators is to have a wide variety of styles
and to use the individual personalities of these artists,” he says
Arita’s artwork creation process for the Pokémon TCG has also remained consistent over the years
He begins with a hand-sketched rough draft to set the scene
creating a few versions for Creatures to choose from
he moves to a black-and-white line art version
and then to a full-color version that’s closer to the final product
“Each of those three steps has its own check and approval process
which takes a decent amount of time,” he says
it takes about seven weeks just to create one piece of card art
Because he’s gained such strong knowledge of the brand over the years
Arita has a lot of liberty to illustrate Pokémon as he sees fit
Creatures helps determine the setting and tone of the artwork
The work begins with a request for art for a particular card
as well as a little bit of information about what the studio wants to see in his illustration
maybe they want a spot in the Alola region
and will maybe provide information about that place,” Mr
sometimes Creatures will have a specific pose or attack in mind that they want me to do.”
Arita takes care to give every illustration its own individuality: “One thing I always try to focus on in my illustrations is to think about what that Pokémon is
and to not think about what I’ve done with other Pokémon,” he says
This can be somewhat challenging for certain Pokémon
Pulling a Foongus from the large binder of his cards
Arita says that sometimes he has to work a little harder
“This kind of Pokémon is really hard to pose
I tried to use my creativity to have it leaning against a tree to convey a softness of what the Pokémon is really like,” he explains
One thing he strives for with his Pokémon illustrations is give them a more realistic look
“I’ve always tried to observe reality and nature and try to reflect that when portraying the Pokémon as if they could be realistic creatures,” he says
A big part of this look is to also have a background that reflects realistic nature as much as possible
Arita is aware of how Pokémon have changed over the years
While looking at his first drawing of Pikachu from Base Set
we commented that the famous Pokémon used to be much more rotund
“Pikachu’s proportions kind of changed a bit
It would be difficult to show it moving around with those original proportions,” he explains
“But even when I’m drawing Pikachu to this day—if it’s not an action shot
I’ll kind of stick to the older design where it doesn’t have much of a neck
I’ll draw it in a more modern style.”
A better understanding of trading cards as a medium has changed his style
He notes that older card illustrations were less detailed in the past
“You can actually see this in other card games as well
like when you look at the older Magic: The Gathering expansions
but there wasn’t a lot going on in the scenes,” he says
but it’s just that it’s super detailed
I think a lot of fans appreciate the old style.” He attributes some of this change to improvements in technology—newer computers let artists add more detail than ever before
But when an image is shrunk to fit on a card
“Sometimes I’ll even go back to my older
simpler designs and try to take learnings from those to keep that impact important,” Mr
the emergence of full-art cards has allowed Mr
Arita and his fellow artists to add a little more detail than usual
Showing us a collection of recent rare Ultra cards he worked on
he explains that he was going for a specific look with them
we all try to creatively do this to make it feel like the art is even bigger than it actually is
So we spend time thinking about what will go out of the frame,” he says
we think about which parts are going to sparkle and shine.” He notes that this runs contrary to what he was just saying about simpler cards having more impact
but it’s the larger and more complex art that gives him the freedom to try new things
As Pokémon have changed in subtle ways
Advancements in computer technology have certainly aided his process
allowing him to work faster and on larger projects
He has always used a computer to color his illustrations digitally
but artwork larger than a card image was difficult
“The power of computers was so weak then that if I had a big poster-sized illustration
I had to break it up into sections and color it while keeping in mind the other sections
So it was really a big pain to use computers back then
The improvements in technology have made it a lot easier,” he says
Arita explains that it’s far easier to get the proportions right when working with a 2-D image than when working in 3-D
where you have to care about proportions and everything
It’s easy to draw hair standing up in 2-D
“I always try to do my best and leave the judgment and evaluation of the art to the future.” After 500 cards and more than 20 years of adding his creative vision to the Pokémon TCG
Arita can feel comfortable with his dynamic contributions to the Pokémon universe
We look forward to seeing his artistic creations in future expansions of the Pokémon TCG

Metrics details
Menthol is thought to stimulate lacrimation via activation of cold-sensitive primary afferent neurons in the cornea
We evaluated a warm compress containing menthol as a potential treatment for dry eye by examining its effects on the tear film in healthy subjects (n = 20) and dry eye patients (n = 35)
Disposable eyelid-warming steamers that either did (MH) or did not (HO) contain menthol were applied to one eye of each subject either once only for 10 min or repeatedly over 2 weeks
Single application of MH significantly increased tear meniscus volume (P = 8.6 × 10−5
P = 1.3 × 10−5) and tear film breakup time (P = 0.006
P = 0.002) as well as improved meibum condition in healthy subjects and dry eye patients
Repeated application of MH significantly increased tear meniscus volume (P = 0.004
P = 1.7 × 10−4) and tear film breakup time (P = 0.037
P = 0.010) in healthy subjects and dry eye patients
Repeated application of MH thus induced persistent increases in tear fluid volume and tear film stability in dry eye patients
suggesting that repeated use of a warm compress containing menthol is a potential novel treatment for dry eye disease
The possible effects of menthol on tear volume and tear film stability in humans have remained unknown
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of a disposable eyelid-warming steamer containing menthol (MH) on tear film function
and the ocular surface in individuals with dry eye
We first examined the effects of a single application of MH and of a similar device without menthol (HO) in healthy subjects and dry eye patients
We then examined the effects of repeated warming with the two devices over a period of 2 weeks
there were no reports of persistent complications as a result of the procedures
Note that only MH increased tear volume not only in normal subjects but also in dry eye patients
We have here shown that single application of a disposable eyelid-warming device containing menthol (MH) increased TMV and prolonged tear film BUT in both dry eye patients and healthy subjects
whereas single application of a similar device without menthol (HO) had no such effects
induced persistent increases in TMV and BUT in dry eye patients as well as normal subjects
Our results thus indicate that single or repeated application of MH improved the condition of the tear film in both the normal and diseased state
suggesting that MH application is a potential novel treatment option for dry eye
suggesting that warming might be expected to have a negative effect on the production of tear fluid
We have found that the application of eyedrops containing menthol or of chilled saline eyedrops did not increase TMV in healthy subjects (unpublished data)
together with our present finding that only MH increased TMV in healthy subjects and dry eye patients
thus suggest that warming may be necessary for menthol to be able to increase tear fluid volume and that the regulation of TMV by menthol and temperature appears to be complex
Repeated application of MH induced stable increases in both TMV and BUT in both normal subjects and dry eye patients
Given that tear film parameters were evaluated at least 8 h after the final application of MH
our results suggest that repeated MH use might give rise to a persistent stimulation of tear fluid production by lacrimal glands
The mechanisms of such persistent effects warrant further investigation
especially given that repeated application of menthol might be expected to result in desensitization of the TRPM8 response
the application of MH did not directly expose the ocular surface to menthol and thus might be considered equivalent to low-dose ointment application
Our results thus suggest that repeated application of MH ameliorated dry eye symptoms
We would like to emphasize that repeated use of MH over a period of 2 weeks improved TMV and BUT in dry eye patients without the need for administration of any eyedrops or medication
These results indicate that MH application is a potential alternative to eyedrops as a treatment for dry eye patients
Long-term treatment with eyedrops can result in the development of corneal epithelial disorders (toxic keratopathy) and otherwise adversely affect quality of life
dry eye patients with additional ocular diseases such as glaucoma may need to administer multiple types of eyedrops
with the application of those for relief of dry eye symptoms possibly leading to dilution of the drugs contained in the others
Repeated application of MH is thus a candidate novel treatment for individuals with dry eye—including both ADDE and EDE—that would avoid the adverse effects of eyedrop administration
The efficacy of MH for treatment of dry eye thus warrants further evaluation in a multicenter study with a larger number of patients
Exclusion criteria for all participants included ocular allergies and a history of eye surgery
The healthy subjects had no ocular conditions other than cataract or refractive error
Data were obtained from the left eye of each subject unless this eye did not meet the enrollment criteria
in which case data were obtained from the right eye
One of the 36 patients with dry eye did not undergo single or repeat device application
with the result that the number of such subjects (eyes) was 35 for each protocol
The effects of two types of disposable eyelid-warming steamer (DELW)18 that either contained menthol (MH) (Hogushite-Shaki; Kao
Japan) or did not (HO) (Jo-ki de Hot Eye Mask
Kao) were first evaluated after a single application for 10 min
The two devices were tested on different days with an interval of at least 7 days between each test
The effects of repeated application of MH or HO were then determined after their use for 10 min twice a day for 2 weeks
DELW is an eye mask–shaped device that contains iron powder and water and which provides moist heat through the chemical reaction of iron
and atmospheric oxygen when its package is opened
Menthol is volatilized from MH with heat and steam
with the amount of volatilized menthol being ~0.02 mg over 10 min
Japan) was inserted over the lower lid margin (midway between the middle and outer thirds) for 5 min without topical anesthesia
with subjects being asked to close their eyes during the measurement
Room temperature (25.3° ± 1.2 °C) and humidity (41.2 ± 6.3%) were maintained relatively constant for all examinations
all of the examinations described above were performed both before (at least 1 day) the initial device application as well as during the daytime at least 8 h (but <16 h) after the final application (in order to avoid immediate effects of warming)
Changes in TMV and BUT between before and after device application were analyzed with Student’s paired t test
whereas those in meibum grade and fluorescein staining score were assessed with Wilcoxon’s signed rank test
A P value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant
