putting one together can prove a challenge
Former Third Eye Blind bassist Leo Kremer (who is also a co-founder of his own burrito chain) once compared making one to “making one car.”
and more – the options for the inner workings of a great burrito are endless
Burritos are complicated and are defined by the preferences of the person making it and the person who will eat it
Roll Up Burritos is taking the challenge and giving its customers options to customize a masterpiece of their creation rolled into a tasty tortilla
Located in a compact orange building along the Sunabe Seawall and about a five-minute drive from Gate 1 of Kadena Air Base
Roll Up Burrito really draws a crowd for lunch
The joint looks like a beachfront food shack in the U.S
Its interior walls are adorned with menu items printed in chalk on blackboard
colorful photos of burritos and side dishes
If you see customers filling out what looks like a horse-race slip
it’s actually an order form to pick all of the delicious fillings you want in your burrito
decide between a burrito bowl or two sizes of burritos: 9-inch or 12-inch
Now here comes the fun part – customize your burrito with the many different topping options the shop offers
from various types of rice and vegetables to cheese and salsa
first-time customers may find it hard to decide what to choose
But the employees are friendly and can assist you in deciding on right ingredients to fit you taste
I ordered the 9-inch shrimp and guacamole burrito and a 9-inch yakiniku beef burrito (900 yen
and my slip for shrimp and guacamole burrito got check marks for beans
my shrimp and avocado burrito had a fruity taste
cheese and other toppings together was great
The surprise was when I bit into my steak burrito
The garlic rice and chopped steak ensemble created an addictive sweet and spicy taste I was not expecting
The burritos went well beyond the size of a meal I would normally eat
but it didn’t not take me long to finish every last bite of these two Mexican delights
Not once during this meal were my taste buds bored
and the depth in flavor and textures made a robust eater out of me
I washed down these masterpieces with Roll Up’s original lemonade
It deserves equal credit because Its delicate sweetness and distinct sourness cooled me down and set me up for one bite after another of the burritos
Whether you are die-hard Mexican food enthusiast or newbie like me
Fill out the slip and get ready to be wowed by their burrito offerings
* Burritos are available as either nine- or 12-inch rolls

The very first time I tried shabu shabu was during a visit to Tottori in mainland Japan
My fiancee wanted to try eating it together during a recent trip to Okinawa
Luckily one of them right outside the entrance was open when we arrived
so don’t forget to make reservations ahead
The interior is simple and has enough tables that can be joined together for larger parties
The noise level may have been a little higher than some other restaurants
We decided on sharing the Agu’s Hideout Seiro Set for 3,980 yen total for the both of us
The sukiyaki set consisted of neatly organized pork slices and minced meat served inside a bamboo pipe with plenty of veggies to cook in our broth
but we decided to stick with a glass of water
During my shabu shabu experience in Tottori
I ordered mochi and quickly learned the hard way that if it stayed in the boiling broth for more than five seconds
I lost some tasty bites of mochi during that meal
But knowing meat can’t dissolve like mochi
I was feeling confident I’d get my fill at Agu No Kakurega
and the other was a golden sesame creamy sauce
but the sesame sauce worked well with every piece of meat and vegetable
Eating the meat without dipping it into anything tasted very bland
so I stuck to dipping sauce to give it more flavor
Another thing to keep in mind is that shabu shabu restaurants usually offer different types of broth flavors to choose from
This meal made me reminisce about Korean BBQ
the delicate pork and minced meat didn’t make me forget the melted mochi I lost in Tottori
The Blue Steak Wonder hotels offer stunning views and beach access — all from meticulously crafted
stylish rooms that harmonize with their surroundings
Like their evocative and slightly perplexing moniker
captivating charm that sets them apart from everything around them
The accommodations are spread through three modern and chic buildings
two in scenic Yomitan and one in the lively coastal town of Chatan
and each promises a different type of luxurious oceanside experience
taking a romantic getaway or in pursuit of a beach party
The hotels were constructed by Hiromitsu Hirose
who made a name for himself as an architect in Tokyo before moving to Okinawa 20 years ago
He worked alongside two of his close friends on the design and decoration
and they proudly bill the hotels as the brainchild of three ojisan
as well; they came up with the idea one night over steak
it stands as a testament to its creators’ resolute originality
creativity and independent thinking — values that are apparent in every inch of the rooms they’ve built
Each Blue Steak Wonder hotel is designed with intense attention to detail
replete with exotic and original flourishes
Both Yomitan properties are perched right on the coast
allowing for easy beach access and panoramic ocean views
a kitchen and a washer-dryer in every room
Blue Steak Wonder Nagahama is best suited for groups and families
and the centerpiece of every room is a warm
3-meter-long table around which families and friends can gather
The Blue Steak Wonder Senaha has a more sleek and minimalist design
with black and gray accents accentuating the ocean’s vibrant beauty
the view through the floor-to-ceiling windows feels infinite
making it ideal for couples or groups looking to relax in a sumptuous setting
a bakery and souvenir shop where you can see directly into a factory that makes the region’s famous beni-imo tarts
which have six rooms (Nagahama) and three rooms (Senaha)
Visitors can opt to stay in smaller — but still exquisite — twin and triple rooms
in the deluxe suites or in the building’s crown jewel: a spacious
which offers an expansive view of the sea and cityscape
each with two double beds and a private bathroom
The kitchen and living room boast massive windows looking out on both the shoreline and the cityscape
which can also be enjoyed from the room’s large
with a reputation for being international and welcoming
The Blue Steak Wonder Chatan is only a few minutes by car from American Village and the region’s renowned Sunset Beach
guests can partake in the area’s warm beach culture: Around the hotel
one of the island’s most popular places to surf
dive and snorkel (or just walk along the coast
The Blue Steak Wonder hotels don’t resemble typical beachside stays; there’s an air of exoticism about them
studied minimalism that recalls an art gallery
Every aspect of the experience is carefully considered
from the appliances and tableware to the bedding and the wall and ceiling colors
The hotels all share a unique trait as well: They all lack common spaces for guests to congregate
The first is that it creates a sense of cozy
as though you’ve been whisked away to your own
(These hotels are great for those looking for a long-term stay.) The second is to encourage visitors to get out and explore Okinawa
interacting with the local landscape and community and discovering all that the area has to offer for themselves
the hotel also provides a traveling chef service
Guests who want a one-of-a-kind in-suite dining experience can choose between two private chefs
one expertly trained in Japanese cuisine and one versed in Western-style food
seasonal ingredients sourced from the region
fresh sashimi and rare fruits that can only be found on the island
Though the rooms may not look typically Japanese at first glance
there’s something distinctly Japanese about them; they’re imbued with a design philosophy that’s incredibly particular about aesthetics and comfort
with gorgeous bathrooms and baths — particularly the penthouse at Chatan
which has an outdoor shower and soaking tub on its veranda
Despite each location’s close proximity to the shore
those staying at a Blue Steak Wonder hotel might find themselves lingering in the room instead of rushing right to the beach
sunlit spaces and enjoying the sublimely cozy atmosphere

military investigators began downloading the internet browser history on dead Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Gabriel Olivero’s computer
“How long does it take for a severed carotid artery to result in unconsciousness?”
“How does someone cut their carotid artery with a kitchen knife?”
“How long would it take to die if one of your external jugular vein [sic] was slit?”
those searches are tucked into a 102-page investigative report by the U.S
military into the homicide of Tamae Hindman
a 44-year-old citizen of Japan who worked in Okinawa’s beauty industry
the end to a stormy relationship that began 2 ½ years earlier
Crime scene investigators located a major stab wound on Hindman’s neck
that indicated the woman’s desperate but vain attempt to defend herself from his blade
Olivero then surgically took the knife to his groin
evidence that he had learned from his extensive online research
One of the woman’s two children witnessed the gruesome scene
It wasn’t the first time that night that Olivero visited her apartment
he and Hindman had argued from opposite sides of a locked door
He begged her to let him in and threatened suicide if she didn’t comply
Hindman called Naval Criminal Investigative Service’s Resident Agency Okinawa
During the 10 minute wait to be transferred
The divorced mother never mentioned the presence of the irate sailor to authorities on the line
she hung up after claiming she called due to being locked out of her apartment
to an Airbnb apartment he was sharing with his mother in Chatan
a town about 28 miles south of Camp Schwab
a Marine Corps base in Okinawa’s Henoko District
Deeply concerned for her son’s mental state
Olivero’s mother had flown from the United States days earlier to be with him
In the early morning hours of April 13 in the Airbnb flat
Olivero’s mom watched her son dissolve into a “state of panic,” according to the report
she made Olivero promise to stay away from Hindman’s apartment
he left the rented room and walked the 865 feet to her home
Olivero’s mother never saw him alive again
servicemen and a Japanese woman were found dead
serviceman has fatally stabbed a Japanese woman and then killed himself
according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry
amid growing resentment about the presence of American troops in Japan's southwestern region
When investigators interviewed Olivero’s fellow sailors and Marines at 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion they found no red flags warning that the North Carolina native had a predisposition for murder or suicide
His peers — their names are redacted in the report — uniformly described the man they nicknamed “Ollie” as a “gifted and high performing” sailor
an honor graduate with a clean service record and excellent work ethic
A fellow corpsman at 3rd Recon described him as “selfless.”
“He always made time to help his teammates
… He was genuine and truly gave a shit about how I was doing
Similar descriptions by 3rd Recon personnel pepper the pages of the report
with sailors and Marines echoing their shared disbelief that he could be capable of the violence
“This was the last thing that I would have expected,” said 3rd Recon’s battalion surgeon
who met Olivero’s mother at the battalion aid station on April 12
the day before the corpsman’s body was found in Hindman’s apartment
Asked whether Olivero seemed anxious that day
one platoon sergeant from 3rd Recon shared a memory about Olivero’s kind nature
One of the Marines killed a turtle during a field exercise
and he recalled Olivero becoming distressed about the creature’s death
“All life is sacred,” the sergeant remembered the corpsman telling the Marines
“Olivero was one of the last guys I would ever think would do something like this," he continued

Josue Marquez/Marine Corps)A ‘happy couple’
in the fall of 2016 and reported to 3rd Marine Division’s 3rd Recon Battalion
and the two began a romance that evolved into a “shared domination/submission sexual fetish,” according to text exchanges between Olivero and Hindman that were compiled by investigators
Olivero entered into a separate relationship with another local Japanese woman
But all parties knew about the relationships
and base logbooks revealed that Hindman continued visiting Olivero at Camp Schwab throughout 2018
Their relationship began to change in late 2018
when Hindman started dating a Marine reservist who had deployed to Okinawa with 2nd Battalion
The text messages between Olivero and Hindman began teetering between volatile and “sexually intimate,” investigators noticed
even if the corpsman’s fellow service members failed to notice the shifting relationship
I thought that they were on the path to marriage,” Olivero’s immediate supervisor with 3rd Recon told investigators
I attended a fireworks festival in Nago with the two of them
Olivero told me that he intended to extend his military assignment in Japan and I kidded him about getting married to [her]
Another of Olivero’s friends at 3rd Recon told investigators that “they seemed like a happy couple.”
Children on their way to Kitatama Elementary School in Okinawa's Chatan
military bases sprawl over more than half of the municipality's area
Olivero was sleeping in Hindman’s bed when authorities awakened him
They told him that they were responding to a report that he had sexually assaulted her
and Okinawa Prefectural Police investigators found ties typically used during bondage sex sessions
including signs of wear around the posts of Hindman’s bed
The corpsman told them that he and Hindman often engaged in “rough sex.” He agreed to submit to a sexual assault examination at Camp Foster Naval Hospital
Although she was the person who called Camp Butler’s Provost Marshal Office to report the alleged crime
Hindman told the Japanese police officers that she was too tired to answer questions or undergo a forensic examination for sexual assault
NCIS in Okinawa launched a formal investigation into the allegations and it remained an active case 78 days later when the dead bodies were discovered
Japanese police ended their probe after Hindman refused to cooperate
With limited evidence available to implicate him for sexual assault
Olivero’s command opted against confining him in the brig
with his weapon card taken away and his driving privileges revoked
A military protective order mandated that he stay at least 500 feet away from Hindman
although she continued to visit Camp Schwab to see the Marine reservist
Neither NCIS nor uniformed leaders told Olivero that Japanese authorities had dropped their case against him
Despite Hindman’s sex crime allegations and the military protective order that kept them apart
Olivero’s "emotions alternated between infatuation with and hatred” for her
punctuated by a simmering jealousy and resentment for her ongoing relationship with the reservist
He seemed to be unraveling but none of his peers thought Ollie was a threat to himself or others
He’d also been selected for advancement to second class petty officer
I could tell something was wrong,” said a member of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit who worked daily with Olivero for nearly two years
and I could tell he was dealing with a hard time
he’d lose track of the answer and you’d have to re-state the question.”
Olivero sought help from his chaplain and mental health care
After speaking by phone with Olivero on March 15
one mental health specialist indicated that the corpsman believed his stability was being tested by Hindman’s continued presence at Camp Schwab
Olivero reported to his chain of command that Hindman approached him while he was at the base barber shop
Just stay away from her,” the Provost Marshal’s Office detachment at Camp Schwab responded
Olivero expressed a desire for “professional care due to the constant rumination of the charges each time he sees the suspected victim on base," the file noted
During his sessions with mental health caregivers
coping well and benefiting from “self-care such as meditation
and April 8 sessions seemed to show Olivero was improving
and prayer as options to assist in his forward progress where he notes that his rumination symptoms have decreased substantially,” an unnamed license social worker wrote after the April 2 appointment
“He also notes that his sleep has improved
He was very interested in developing mindfulness routines and engaged in a model of self-awareness practice.”
At no time did he appear to express suicidal thoughts to his therapists and service members noticed his improvement
“He seemed to be handling the stress well,” a fellow corpsman told investigators
“He started teaching both yoga and meditation … started volunteering most weekends at the USO and became a Single Marine Program representative
He helped organize a company barbeque that turned out to be a lot of fun.”
Members of Japan Ground Self-Defense Force and the Single Marine Program helped clean up the perimeter of Camp Naha on Aug
Nicole Rogge/Marine Corps)‘I want to die.’
While healthcare workers and military personnel believed Olivera was on the path to recovery
he was telling his family a very different story
“I am … realizing that I just can’t win this situation,” he wrote in a group text with his mother
“I am going crazy with how unfair this situation is … A man being investigated
and then harassed by a woman who falsely accused him of raping her so she can get revenge and this sympathy of another ‘brother’ service-member who enables her to continue harassing me
No consequences at all to them so they both directly lie with impunity to get me in more trouble … Even if I do survive this I will have to fight off potential PTSD and lingering psychological effects.”
a day after what his therapist believed was a successful session
Olivera sent another concerning text to his family
“The system is rigged against me and she has all the power
She can lie with impunity and do whatever she wants with impunity
I should be going to the gym or working ..
it’s also the betrayal and lack of justice and powerlessness,” he wrote
If I don't she will rationalize it and still feel sadistic pleasure.”
Olivera’s text expressed the anxiety he felt by constantly trying to avoid seeing Hindman or the Marine reservist in the faces of every person he met
“I don't want to live if my life is permanently affected by this injustice ..
before that string of increasingly disturbing texts to his family
listing as his leave address a room miles away from Hindman’s home
after Hindman’s first call to the Camp Butler Provost Marshal’s Office
members of his platoon pulled his leave papers to find where they could locate him
Okinawa first responders found the bodies together
Olivero’s other girlfriend told investigators that in February he expressed a desire to kill Hindman
Provost Marshal's Office Marines from Marine Corps Base Camp Butler conduct training at Okinawa's Camp Foster on Dec
Nicole Rogge/Marine Corps)Recommended reforms
the report’s unidentified author urged military officials to consider several reforms
Citing the Marine Corps’ “insufficiently vague” order governing the issuance of military protective orders
It included a call to consider sharing restraining orders with Japanese law enforcement agencies if the service member lived outside of a base
if that policy could be made to comply with U.S
privacy laws and the status of forces agreement with Tokyo
Noting Olivero’s frustration at complying with the restraining order while Hindman continued to enjoy access to Camp Schwab
the report’s author also asked officials to consider a debarment policy that targeted individual bases instead of a blanket policy that blocked a person from entering all U.S
The author also called for Marine commanders to have better access to their sailors’ records of emergency data
training and disciplinary records and other files
the report noted that in mid-2019 all of its senior uniformed dispatchers at the Consolidated Dispatch Center were lance corporals and the translation services seemed poor
There was a lone Marine serving as the non-commissioned officer-in-charge but “he has been assigned several other collateral duties.”
The report called on the base to get the capability to geo-locate cellular calls to the Consolidated Dispatch Center
It also noted that although calls to the Center are recorded
that wasn’t true for the telephone line manned by the base’s Provost Marshal’s Office Desk Sergeant

but Mexico is arguably one of the most famous
this joint has been known for serving only one simple menu item: “taco.”
no burritos or quesadillas are available there
This may not sound appealing to those who would like to spice things up with all kinds of ingredients
but Mexico’s signature food with just taco meat (mixture of beef and chicken)
fresh lettuce and tomato is a textbook example of “When the solution is simple
There is a perfect balance between each ingredient that survived the test of time
but I hadn’t eaten at Mexico in a while even though it would take me only a five-minute drive from Gate 5 of Camp Foster to go to this joint located in Ginowan City
there were already too many customers waiting
I gave up on the idea of eating at the popular joint
A take-out order could have been an alternative
but I also wanted to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the location
I once even saw a middle-aged man who I believed to be the owner of the joint playing sanshin
an Okinawan musical instrument with three cords
when I heard Mexico opened a branch in Chatan in 2024
its first one ever since its debut 48 years ago
I had a chance to try this new spot recently when I was working at my office on Camp Foster
It took me just about five minutes to get there
although there were already several customers there
The menu list posed at the counter was as simple as it had ever been
It was only tacos and taco rice that were listed along with drinks
whose brown-colored interior looks like an old diner
this new branch has walls in vibrant orange
I remembered how much I loved this simple food
The gentle sweetness of taco meat and shredded lettuce
and the sourness of tomatoes and salsa brought back my memories of the original joint
Mexico’s taco is a little on the compact side
and its spiciness is rather restrained if compared with those served at some other joints
it hits the right spot between not too spicy and not too soft
but this perfectly balanced recipe still felt very special and put me in a happy mood like it did at its other branch

Okinawa — Nearly 100 Okinawans walked through the home of the 18th Wing during a tsunami evacuation drill over the weekend
many carrying fresh memories of an actual alert in April
Chatan residents of all ages walked the evacuation route Saturday under a glaring morning sun
It took them through Gate 1 and up to Marek Park

the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a megaquake advisory for the Nankai Trough

the first in five years and the first following the COVID-19 pandemic
Members of the 18th Civil Engineer Group’s Readiness and Emergency Management Flight set up tables alongside water stations to provide the mock evacuees with information about preparing for disasters
Improvements over last year’s exercise included use of the base loudspeaker to alert residents in English and Japanese
said flight superintendent Senior Master Sgt
Chatan town also sent a text message alert to all phones in the area

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi urged U.S

according to video of a Thursday news conference posted on Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s website
service members cause strong anxiety to the local community and shouldn’t happen,” Hayashi said
“The important thing is that the series of preventive measures announced by the U.S

Denny Tamaki on Wednesday expressed “strong anger” on social media platform X about the latest case

They called for changes to the status of forces agreement governing the U.S

a military spouse and a native of North Carolina
as she and her kids checked out the local produce at Hamby Town
part of the SAN-A supermarket chain on Okinawa and is just a 10-minute drive from Camp Foster
this place falls somewhere in between a supermarket and shopping mall
Although you can purchase anything from clothes
if you look at the number of people checking out the vegetables or trying to pick out a meal in the deli section
you would note that food is the most popular attraction
“We have many American customers at this store
especially on the weekends,” said General Manager Mitsuo Sunagawa
as he showed me around the store with Manager Seiji Arakaki
If you ask Okinawans a good place to buy groceries or deli food
SAN-A stores would be at the top of the list
is one of the most successful companies on the island
some of the company’s 174 stores have evolved into big shopping malls
But the name SAN-A still reminds folks of the casual mood that is specific to local supermarkets
Hamby Town gives off a relaxing vibe and is a great introduction to Okinawan supermarkets for those new to the island
It is not just fruits and vegetables that American customers are looking for at Hamby Town

Some American customers buy all kinds of food at this store

“We make our own bento during the weekdays.”
“A big difference you see between regular Japanese supermarkets and those in Okinawa is the fact that the supermarkets here offer more options for certain food such as dried Shiitake mushroom
explaining that such foods are used primarily for making broth
“Okinawans use these dried foods to make broth a lot more than people in the mainland.”
If you are looking for healthy ingredients with rich taste
Hamby Town offers everything you need to be a broth devotee
It’s not just traditional cuisine that local supermarkets cater to
Hamby Town offers a variety of SPAM and corned beef
Although these foods were imported to Okinawa as “American food,” it is safe to say that they are now part of the local cuisine because they are mostly consumed by locals
a particular type or brand of food will become popular overnight and suddenly start flying off the shelves
Most likely it is triggered by a Japanese TV show dishing out healthy eating tips or discussing new diet methods
nattou (fermented soybeans) was all the rage at stores on Okinawa after a certain TV show reported that it is good for dieting
coconut oil was out of stock at many supermarkets after a TV report commented on its health benefits
Some of these “booms” were initiated in the U.S
So probably you have an idea of what it’s like
I noticed that there wasn’t any rice oil on the shelves
it’s because it’s one of the hottest “healthy” foods at this moment
If you’re looking for a place to buy souvenirs
supermarkets in Okinawa are actually a good place look
“We have many tourists from mainland Japan who buy sweets and packed food for souvenirs,” said Sunagawa
explaining that reasonable prices and variety at SAN-A stores are attractive to tourists.“ Some supermarkets may try to focus on selling its own brand
but SAN-A tries to introduce and sell more national brands in an effort to bring in more options for customers.” I found a young man from MCAS Futenma picking up sweets
So I went to more places to see more variety

or exotic chocolate to bring back to your country
Okinawa — An airman assigned to Kadena Air Base has been fined $1,500 for setting fire to a rooftop tool shed in Chatan town earlier this year
The Naha Summary Court on Friday convicted Staff Sgt
of arson and trespassing in the January incident
a spokeswoman for Naha District Court said by phone Monday
was fined but received no further jail time
according to the prosecutor’s office website
Police originally held Laubach on suspicion of stealing the equivalent of $8 from a parked car and starting a fire that destroyed the shed and the tools inside
15 measured Laubach’s blood-alcohol content at 0.12%
four times Japan’s legal driving limit of 0.03%
Government spokespeople in Japan are routinely required to speak to the media only on condition of anonymity
a short drive away from Camp Foster and Kadena Air Base
is a small blue corner store with a very narrow entryway
The way I usually park there is using my hazard lights in front of the store (I learned from the locals)
the employees are very friendly and the store has stamp cards that give good rewards
you can call ahead and order for quick pay and pick up
One thing I love about this place is how fast the bowls are made and served
They offer many other fruit bowls and poke bowls
but hands down the best acai bowl I have ever eaten is here
Although acai is the main ingredient in this bowl
you can customize your bowl by adding other fruit
When it comes to following through on New Year’s resolutions to eat healthier
this style of bowl may seem like you are cheating because of the burst of flavors that fill your mouth
these bowls are fit for health conscience people
I customized my acai bowl with blueberries
bananas and macadamia nuts mixed with coconut sauce
The bowls are typically handed to you cold
which works to my advantage because I always drive to American Village (five minutes away) to eat by the beach and take in the beautiful views
Eating healthy by the beach is always a great way to kick off the day
Much like Atsugiri Jason’s sentiments about Japanese people
I found myself questioning Americans and their desire to mix fried chicken with waffles - a breakfast delight
It’s mind boggling to see a fried main dish with a dessert
whoever came up with the combo must have been either quite open minded about bending the food rules or just very indecisive
CC’s Chicken Waffle has taken the duo and made it their signature dish
located just five minutes from Kadena Air Base
Unlike the typical Belgian waffles I find at convenience stores
the waffle I had at CC’s was very soft and fluffy with a subtle sweetness
After topping it with crispy fried chicken and syrup
the combo hit the sweet spot in my taste buds
The salty flavor of the chicken and the sweetness of the waffle with the aide of the smooth syrup made perfect sense
“The chicken waffle is obviously the most popular item,” said Cody Daggett
the owner of this restaurant as he explained the reasons why the food tastes so good
And I adjusted the recipe to make the fried chicken crispier.”
One bite was all I needed to taste the freshness of the chicken that Daggett talked about
It was a textbook example of being “crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.” Gripped by the perfect balance of salty-sweet and crispy-soft
“The biggest thing people are surprised by liking here - that’s our homemade syrup
but the ingredients are not secret ingredients
It’s about being able to make them in the right order; being able to see when it’s ready,” said the owner
The syrup tasted sweet and had the color of gravy
but with a much lighter and delicate feeling
It’s the kind of taste that you would like to try with other dishes
Homemade Restaurant When Daggett said that everything was homemade at his place
because it’s not just the food that is homemade there
About 6 years ago that the restaurant owner moved to Okinawa
After working at a local restaurant for four and a half years
I was trying to think of what I could make that would appeal to the taste of both Americans and the local community,” said Daggett explaining how he started his restaurant
One day he saw people eating pancakes at a restaurant
and it gave him the idea that waffles would be something that Americans and Japanese would like
Daggett spent the next couple of months creating his own menu and recipes
“This is just an empty box when I started,” said Daggett
and the fact that it is handmade likely has a lot to do with the warm atmosphere
CC’s also makes homemade macaroni and cheese or gumbo to go along with the chicken

Okinawa – Two more vehicular crashes recently occurred at a spot near this Marine Corps base where two earlier incidents claimed two lives
The four collisions took place on a stretch of Route 58 in Chatan that an Okinawa highway spokesman said is among the most dangerous in the prefecture
The site is “one of the top five accident-prone spots” on Okinawa
a spokesman for the South National Highways Office told Stars and Stripes on Tuesday
“It is of the places on the island where accidents frequently occur,” Okinawa police said Monday
a car driven by “a person related to the U.S
military” collided with a local taxi around 1 a.m
a spokesman for the Okinawa Police Station told Stars and Stripes by phone Tuesday
Police suspect the individual of drunken driving but did not make an arrest
A Marine with the 3rd Maintenance Battalion
was involved in a collision around that time
spokeswoman LaDonna Davis of Marine Corps Installations Pacific told Stars and Stripes by email Wednesday
The driver cooperated with the investigation and the Okinawa police “did not take this person into custody,” the police spokesman said

a Marine corporal whom the service has yet to identify was killed in the same area
His car veered off the highway around 4:50 a.m
and struck a light pole and a pedestrian fence

an Okinawa police spokesman told Stars and Stripes by phone Monday
No further information was available on that incident
which took place about 80 yards north of the fatal accident scene
a vehicle driven by a Marine left the roadway at nearly the same site

The highway office has been applying a non-slip finish to Route 58 around Chatan crossing since 2009 and plans this fiscal year to extend those improvements to the area where the recent accidents occurred
“We are working on the improvement of the road condition
but I would like to request drivers continue to be careful and do their part to prevent these accidents,” he said

If you go to Chatan Seawall Area during lunchtime
you will see some eateries crowded with servicemembers in uniform
Tropical Kitchen is a popular lunch spot for the base crowd on Okinawa
this to-go-only joint stands out even in an area with many colorful stores and restaurants
I tried this place for the first time in November
I was in the mood for a quality meal for lunch during my office day on Camp Foster
so I made my way to get an ocean view from the sea wall
My original plan was to go for a burrito or sandwich
but Tropical Kitchen’s yellow building and photos of Loco Moco and Garlic Shrimp exhibited outside were intriguing
looking at customers waiting outside to pick up their orders
I thought the food must really be worth the wait
I waited behind four customers and tried to choose from the delicious menu items
I was torn between the Loco Moco (1,000 yen for medium size or about $6.59) and Garlic Shrimp (1,350 yen for medium size) and at the last minute
I just wanted to enjoy some seafood with a beautiful ocean view while reflecting on my fun-filled summer
I coupled that with a Guava Juice (350 yen)
If you go to Tropical Kitchen for the first time
you should note that it is no fast-food chain store where your food will be served up quickly
I took a few minutes’ walk to sit on the seawall
As soon as I opened the Styrofoam container
the garlicky smell of the fried shrimp tickled my appetite
their savory taste was concentrated into each addictive bite
forgetting the white rice and macaroni salad sides
The last time I had garlic shrimp was at a restaurant in Motobu Peninsula on my way back from the beach
Tropical Kitchen’s shrimp on the seawall seemed to grow on me and surpass the shrimp of the past
If you’re looking to enjoy tasty food in a setting that allows you to gaze at the sunset as the sea breeze washes over you
Located at the north end of Sunabe Seawall in Chatan and a stone’s throw away from Kadena Air Base’s Gate 1 entrance
Hearth Café is already a popular for the military community
“Half of our customers are Americans,” said Manami Ishii
“They really enjoy having a relaxing time and good food with friends and family.”
The resort-style café can hold about 25 people
There is a cozy open terrace outside and comfortable bamboo tables with a sofa and bar counter inside
The most popular dish is the California Surfer’s Bowl (1,100 yen)
sesame seeds marinated with the special soy and wasabi sauce on top of the rice
sandwich (650 yen) is a favorite of American customer’s
mango and pine apple are also a popular pick here
many people use this cafe as a casual meeting place … wives get together with kids,” Ishii said
adding that inside the café there are sofa’s available for moms with small children
the atmosphere changes a little,” she said
“More adults and couples visit for dinner.”
Don’t miss the sunset if you’re planning to go to the Sunabe area for the dinner
the café on occasion will have local musicians perform
They have an English menu and accept dollars
but know that there are no parking spaces available
Five Star Deli near the Sunabe Seawall in Chatan City has garnered a lot of popularity on Okinawa
You’ll find Five Star close to skateboarder hangout Sunabe Baba Koen inside a “gaijin juutaku,” or foreigner residence
Gaijin juutaku are houses that were once used as homes for Americans living off base and are now experiencing second lives as local businesses
The spacious interior with a counter at the end allows for the constant stream of customers to enter without crowding each other
it was my turn to order from the menu listing many familiar sandwiches I’d tried before
Some of the standard deli sandwiches on the menu include a Philly cheesesteak
My initial instinct was to go for the “Five Star Club.” I thought the best option would be the sandwich carrying the name of the restaurant
owner Benjamin Taku Marceau suggested the Reuben sandwich when I approached the counter
Marceau is friendly and because he is bilingual
he can easily converse with all the customers
His helpful suggestion convinced me that perhaps a Reuben would be a good choice for my first visit to Five Star
Five Star Deli has plenty of seating to enjoy their delicious sandwiches on site
I took a seat by the window for lunch and a view
The last time I had a Reuben sandwich was more than two decades ago
and you could order the sandwich consisting of pastrami (or corned beef)
smothered in thousand island dressing and served on rye at just about any sandwich shop
They were just what I ordered when I was tired of Cuban sandwiches
so I wasn’t sure how Five Star Deli would change my mind
One bite in and I knew why Marceau confidently suggested the delectable Reuben
The salty sauerkraut and greasy pastrami paired with the melted Swiss cheese was a nice balance for the aroma and texture of the baked rye
tangy thousand island dressing added a burst of flavor to tie it all together
the sandwich was something I didn’t want to end
Marceau explained that in New York City delis are open around the clock and that the meat for Reuben sandwiches takes hours to prepare
but the restaurant dedicates a tremendous amount of time to the preparation of their sandwich ingredients
the pastrami is marinated for a week in 13 spices and herbs
four different sugars and three different salts
The time and dedication are what makes the Reuben so delicious
though its birthplace is contested between Omaha and New York City in the States
there’s no denying that a good Reuben is hard to resist
And for someone getting reacquainted with the Reuben like me
there is no better place to dive back into that taste of Omaha
than heading to Five Star for a delightful meal
To-go purchases will be 8% tax with additional 50 yen for box charge
calling an end to its more than four decades of batting cage glory
It was a very popular spot when I was a college student about 20 years ago
the place was packed with people looking to relieve stress by taking cuts at 90 mph fastballs
or young couples flirting over 60 mph balls before moving onto other amusement available at the same location
Batting cages may be an amusement whose heyday has long passed
a Japanese magazine unrelated to the American magazine of the same name
the first batting cage debuted in Tokyo in 1965
and was followed by many other facilities in the late 60s and 70s
the popularity of the amusement held in the 80s
leading to the launch of a ground breaking system in the 90s which made it possible to throw various pitches including breaking balls by using two rotatable discs
Declines in birth rate and popularity of baseball
or increase of diversity in amusement were cited as the reasons for the downfall
would attest to the rise and fall of the amusement
“The popularity of batting cage was at the highest when our company started
I would assume now they are down to about 700,” Mr
a long-established maker of batting cage equipment says
It’s hard to track the precise number of batting cages
Weekly Playboy quoted a survey that indicated there were 541 batting cages in Japan as of 2014
it is still too early to say that the batting cage is dead
as it has been making somewhat of a comeback in the Japanese pop-culture scene lately
a famous batting cage enthusiast who has visited more than 800 batting cages in Japan
was recently featured in several TV and radio shows
talking about the rise of unique batting cages; ones where you can swing at 142 mph fastballs
in a TV show called “Real Yakyu Ban (Real Baseball Pinball),” a pitching machine was used to let professional players virtually face a pitcher on a monitor controlled by TV talents
The way the pros were fooled by the virtual pitcher drew much attention and contributed to the popularity of the show
reported in November of 2015 that then Manager Yoshinobu Takahashi of the Tokyo Yomiuri Giants
decided to introduce the machine to the team’s training
as he was impressed with the quality and variety of the pitches it can throw
the virtual pitching machine is now a very popular system at batting cages in Japan
there are several batting cages facilities still running
Although they may not provide fastballs with ridiculous velocities
There is a batting cage facility that introduced a “strikeout game” to let customers try their skills of locating pitches by throwing at targets in the strike zone
Others host home run competitions where you can earn gift cards
like the now-closed amusement complex in Kyoto
batting cages continue to stay relevant on this southern island
Velocity ranges from 80 to 140 kmph (approx

there is nothing more refreshing than shaved ice
This well-known sweets parlor in a thatch-roofed shack at Mihama American Village that is famous for its large and tasty “ice mount tropical fruits” – shaved ice creations that sell for 1,000 yen ($10)
“It is literally a mountain of shaved ice with assorted ice creams and various local seasonal fruits like pineapple and passion fruit,” says Ryu-Pin’s Orie Zaizen
“We always heap tropical fruits and ice cream on the shaved ice in large container right in front of the customer because seeing your dessert created adds to the anticipation.”
Since Ryu’s uses fresh fruits that are in season menu options vary depending on the time of the year
And if you happen to stop by the shack during the summertime you’re in for a real treat
our contracted local farmers bring us extremely sweet mangos every year,” she says
“The shaved ice mountain with seasonal mango is like the queen of desserts and cannot be compared with any other cold sweets.”
“Our shaved ice mountains are served large so that you can enjoy them with your family members or other loved ones,” Zaizen says
What if you’re hankering for something cool and sweet that’s a little less daunting
“We have other popular items that may be easier for one person to finish,” Zaizen said
Passion fruit smoothies (for 350 yen) and ‘kokuto kori zenzai’ (shaved ice with brown sugar
We also have ‘suppuru,’ (tropical fruit juice with agar gelatin balls for 350 yen) which are very popular
And its riverside location means you can enjoy your dessert on one of the many chairs around the shop in the open air with refreshing cool breeze from the river
buildings and gardens around the parlor are beautifully decorated with illuminations,” Zaizen said
“That adds another special flavor to our cold sweets.”
a long series of stairs that run up a hill north of Camp Foster
The location borders the west end of Plaza Housing Area and is a great place for some cardio
It had been a while since my coworker had told me about this sweat-inducing set of stairs
Not only do you have to navigate the small roads in the residential area
but parking is not available in the area for SOFA members and other folks coming from U.S
A photo of the view from the top of the stairs was what finally convinced me to make the trek to the Stairway to Heaven
It was the perfect way to get active for “Supōtsu no Ak,i” or autumn for sports in Japanese
A day after seeing the photo of the enticing landscape
I parked on Camp Foster near the Firehouse Gate
I took a 10-minute walk past Killin Elementary School toward the stairs
A sign reminding SOFA members to not park there signaled that I’d arrived at the spot
And since I could see straight up from the bottom
I realized the steps were a little bit on the wider side
making them a bit easier to walk up than I had thought
it took less than 20 seconds to be drenched in sweat
and I had to step aside several times to let others pass me
climbing these stairs soon became an intense workout for my legs and arms
I had to stop several times to catch my breath
(Several websites indicate that this stairway has 268 steps in total)
The view felt very fresh since the area I was looking at had always seemed noisy on the ground level due to heavy traffic and many stores lining the streets
I joined other folks who were taking a rest at the top
a military spouse who was there with another military spouse
They said they were still new to the location
explaining that this was the second visit for Avanti
But they were already in their third-round trip of the day
and they seemed rejuvenated and full of energy
“The view is absolutely beautiful,” Avanti said
“I believe when you are climbing the steps
I have to work hard to be able to get on top and have a beautiful view,” she continued
everything for you to get to a point of life
We agreed that the stairs are aptly named since the end of all the hard work is a beautiful view and the pleasure of a job well done that feels like Heaven on Earth
*I did not measure the distance from the bottom to the top of the stairs
but the healthcare app on my smartphone indicates that I walked roughly 250 to 300 m
Summer on Okinawa brought more mom-and-pop and father-and-son restaurants out of hiding and back to business
because I found a luxury burger spot – the Ishigaki Island Kitchen Bin in Chatan town – that rekindled its griddle in July after 2½ years of COVID-19 closure
This burger shop is special because its beef and other ingredients are sourced from Ishigaki
a small island south of Okinawa that is famous worldwide for its premium-quality beef
Ishigaki beef comes from fattened black cattle bred in Okinawa
It’s a higher-grade meat with marbled fat that gives you a melt-in-your-mouth kind of experience
The Island Kitchen has three burgers to choose from: bacon
Make it a double for another 550 yen; add a side of fries
onion rings or homemade potato chips and a drink for 480 yen
sat at a table in the back and within five minutes my double bacon cheeseburger meal set had arrived
and you can taste the freshness with each bite
There is self-serve soft ice cream made with ginger and imported from Hokkaido
juices; bottled beers are available on request
The restaurant has inside seating at four tables that each seat four
The burger shop is a father-and-son operation that they named for their home island
graduated from high school on Ishigaki and moved with his father to Chatan
where they opened the burger place in 2007
Most of the customers are Japanese tourists followed by Americans on Okinawa with the U.S

“I really wanted to open a curry house in Chatan
which is one of a few locations in Japan where you see this many curry restaurants,” said Akinobu Sato
it is part of Japanese culture,” Sato said
“You see so many kinds of curry houses around this area
but what I wanted to serve is Japanese curry.”
Although there are many curry restaurants in Chatan
when it comes to Japanese style there are very few
Most of individual curry restaurants serve either foreign curries such as Indian and Thai
or claim to serve “Okinawan curry,” focusing on local food
This makes sense from the stand point of marketing
because small- or medium-sized restaurants need to stand out by sticking to specific styles or coming up with catchy names to compete against big chain restaurants
it doesn’t sound good enough just to come up with some catchy names or to say that you use certain ingredients,” he said matter-of-factly
“unless it really helps the dishes taste better.”
Curry Works offers a variety of Japanese curries
Although it is safe to say that a majority of people love curry
making everyone happy doesn’t come so easy
the more specific you become about spices,” he said
But it’s unacceptable for a professional chef to ignore what your customers want
That’s’ why I keep the taste of our sauce sweet and mild.”
And what about those customers who want their curry spicy
which was provided by my friend Yoshihiko Sato
who is a prominent Chinese cuisine chef,” Sato said
The idea of adding chili oil reminded me of powdered spices that you can add to your curry at some curry restaurants
Sato clearly drew a line and explained the difference
“If you add powdered spices to curry sauce after it is cooked
it will ruin the taste because the spice needs to be cooked with the sauce for a good amount of time,” he explained
“It is common for people to say that curry tastes better on the second day
I found that the chili oil went very well with the stone-roasted curry that I had
which reminded me of an authentic Chinese dish
added more edge and depth to the curry sauce and made the taste very addicting
“The chili oil tastes so good that many tourists from
China ask me where they can buy it,” Sato said with a sly smile
‘my restaurant is the only place where you can enjoy that taste.’”
Located in an ocean front area of American village and featuring an interior that gives off a beach house vibe
Curry Works offers its customers more than just tasty food
“Having curry rice with this view in front is extraordinary,” said Arina
as she and three friends enjoyed lunch on the restaurant’s balcony
curry and an ocean view is something inseparable for many Japanese
If you watch Japanese TV commercials about curry
so many of them take place on ocean front locations
I don’t think there are many locations in Japan where you can actually enjoy eating curry and seeing a picture-perfect ocean view at the same
It is not too much to say that eating delicious Japanese curry at Curry Works is a special experience

Tokyo
While Okinawa is one of the favourite destinations for Tokyoites in search of sun
beaches and tropical relaxation year-round
most tourists either head to one of the opulent but isolated resort facilities in the north of the island
the busy but somewhat uninspiring prefectural capital
For someone on a weekend run from the daily grind
neither of these two options can be called ideal
as Naha is easily seen in a day and the resorts are mainly designed for extended vacations
if you're looking for something in between the extremes and don't mind a little independent exploring
we recommend staying in or around the town of Chatan
an attractive spot far enough from the bustle of Naha that still offers plenty of things to do for the active traveller
Chatan is perhaps best known for the American Village
a multiplex cinema and a huge Ferris wheel
but it's the still relatively underdeveloped and quiet coastline that really stands out here
In addition to the small but pleasant Sunset Beach
the coast boasts a newly constructed marina and several lush parks
renowned as a mecca for divers and surfers
lies just a few minutes' walk north of the town's centre
Famed for the coral reefs hidden in plain sight right by its shores
Sunabe is also where you'll find cool little cafés
Flights from Tokyo to Naha take less than two and a half hours
and Chatan is roughly a 45-minute drive from the airport
As public transport outside of Naha is scarce to say the least
with constant demand ensuring affordable prices
Even if you're not staying at the Hilton Chatan
the hotel's All Day Dining restaurant
which offers superb breakfast (¥3,200) and lunch (¥2,200/¥2,400) buffets in a calm maritime atmosphere
sushi and locally grown pork are complemented by a wide range of fresh veg and fruit
and the dessert table is sure to get sweets-lovers' juices flowing
For dinner, consider the Hilton's Corrente, where the Italian prix fixe courses, made with locally sourced ingredients, start from a very reasonable ¥4,500. Alternatively, the American Village is packed with cheap eateries – try Kijimuna's (C Bldg
a local favourite consisting of a creamy omelet slapped over spicy ground beef
the Yomitan and Minatogawa areas also offer plenty of restaurants and cafés worth checking out
ANA and Skymark operate multiple direct flights from Haneda Airport to Naha Airport every day
Consider booking your hotel together with the flights
Prices vary significantly based on season and departure time
but can go as low as ¥10,000 for a weekend round-trip
As mentioned above, renting a car on Okinawa is essential for the sake of convenience. Two-day weekend rates start from around ¥15,000 at Naha Airport – try Times or Nippon for good value and service in English
