JAPAN: East Japan Railway is to launch regular operation of double-deck cars on its busy Chuo Rapid line services between Tokyo
Trial running with pairs of double-deckers inserted in the existing Series E233 10-car trainsets began in 2022
and all 57 sets in the fleet are due to be equipped with a pair of double-deck vehicles by March 2025
the Chuo Rapid line double-deck cars will be accessible to passengers paying ordinary fares
but from that date they will be reserved for Green Car (first class) ticket holders
A pair of double-deck cars offers 180 Green Car seats
In contrast to similar double-deck cars used on some of JR East’s other Tokyo suburban routes
the E233 double-deckers will have double-leaf 1 300 mm wide entrance doors; those on other double-deck cars have single-leaf doors opening to a width of 810 mm
The wider doorway required a design change
with the distance between bogies extended by 670 mm to 14 820 mm
JR East had originally planned to introduce the Chuo Rapid line double-deck fleet in 2023
but their series debut was delayed by a shortage of materials for semiconductors

TOKYO –March 7, 2025 – ispace, inc. (ispace) )(TOKYO: 9348)
and Chuo University announced today a memorandum of understanding to study the feasibility of transporting multiple small robots equipped with AI to the lunar surface in order to explore lava tubes that have been discovered on the Moon
The agreement furthers the implementation of the Japanese government’s Cabinet Office Moonshot Research and Development Program
ispace and Chuo University have agreed to cooperate in the implementation of the Lunar Lava Tube Exploration Mission
which will transport the swarm robots equipped with AI
to the Moon's surface in multiple missions from 2028 onwards
The project focuses on “evolvable swarm robots that can share intelligence to settle in unknown and unexplored areas” and is led by Professor Yasuharu Kunii of Chuo University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering
A computer-generated image of a potential lunar base constructed in the lunar lava tubes as planned for 2050
“The signing of this memorandum is a primary example of ispace providing opportunities for technology demonstrations on the Moon as part of the Japanese government’s Cabinet Office Moonshot Research and Development Program,” said Takeshi Hakamada
ispace will support pioneering projects by providing transportation services to landing sites that meet the needs of our customers.”
“With the signing of this memorandum of understanding and the start of collaboration between the university and ispace
I feel that the space age is drawing closer,” said Hisashi Kawai
“I am delighted that the research and development of Chuo University will lead the space age and become the driving force for opening up the future.”
“The synergy between our Moonshot team's AI and robot exploration mission technology and ispace's transportation technology will create the next Japanese and world firsts in Japan's space exploration technology.,” said Professor Yasuharu Kunii
“I am confident that by shedding light on the future potential of using difficult environments
we can grasp the future of humanity and contribute to the expansion of our knowledge and humanosphere.”
For more information, visit: https://moonshot.r.chuo-u.ac.jp/kunii/
Lunar lava tubes were discovered by the Japanese lunar orbiter Kaguya
and are thought to have been formed by lava flows beneath the surface of the Moon
Because the temperature inside lava tubes changes little and the risk of radiation and meteorites is reduced
it is expected that they will serve as strong candidates for the sites of construction of future manned exploration bases
Through research and development by the Kunii Moonshot Project at Chuo University
a swarm of low-function small robots will be automatically organized and controlled by advanced strategic intelligence (network intelligence) installed in each robot
enabling them to explore the inside of lunar lava tubes
missions inside the side holes of lunar lava tubes will be carried out to obtain information necessary for subsequent research and development
It is expected that based on this research
full-scale lunar city development phase may begin
ispace is actively operating the SMBC x HAKUTO-R Venture Moon Mission 2 and has achieved 5 of the 10 mission milestones
the RESILIENCE lunar lander successfully completed a flyby of the Moon on Feb
reaching its closest point to the lunar surface at 22:43 UTC
It has navigated to a point 1.1 million km from Earth
RESILIENCE is currently scheduled to land on the Moon on June 6

"Is there anything we can do?"-Chuo students seriously facing up to the disaster
"What we can do now for the disaster areas
Let's send some cheer to those areas with soccer."-With appeals like this
the planned Charity Soccer Event was held at the Tama Campus soccer ground on April 23
went ahead despite the unfortunate rain with kids soccer players from primary and junior high school playing mini soccer games and wildly cheering at the game between Chuo and Waseda
Parents and locals also took part in a charity giant lottery with extravagant prizes
and their excited cheers led to an enjoyable day
Young soccer players send up cheers at the lottery
The event was organized by current soccer team members who took action by wanting to "do charity work" after seeing the immense destruction in areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake
Taking a central role in activities was the main organizer
Ippei Watabe (graduate of Toko Gakuen High School.) In the beginning of April he talked with the captain and 3rd and 4th year students about what charity activities could be done
At the start they only planned to do fund-raising activities
but general manager Ken Sato instructed them
Go and have a good think about why you are doing this."
"You have teammates from the affected areas
People close to you are facing that reality." He continued with the following words of encouragement for his charges
"Don't look at the disaster from the outside
don't do it 'because everyone is doing it,' now you must think about what you can do and for what before you head into the real world
Watabe (center) and general manager Sato (left) draw numbers at the giant lottery
the players decided on a goal to "send soccer balls and uniforms" to children in the disaster zone who had all their soccer gear washed away in the tsunami
With limited time before the event and inundated with preparations
Watabe emphasized the results of the total effort
We could realize this because the whole team pulled together."
Chuo University soccer team members mingled with children from local soccer clubs in the morning and adults in the afternoon
and a charity game between Kanto University Football Association League Division I heavyweights
but players from both teams put on an impressive performance in the rain
At the end of the charity match was the giant lottery everyone had been waiting for
Prizes included goods signed by famous players donated by J-League teams
The participants held onto their lottery tickets and waited anxiously for the draw
In addition to the 1,418,859 yen raised in street collections (seven times from April 19 -29) at the four stations in the Tama area (Hachoji
a total of 1,537,459 yen was sent to the Tohoku Football Association in the form of balls and uniforms

His contributions include providing a positive research environment to foreign students in Germany
The conferral ceremony for the Honorary Doctorate Degree was held on the Tama Campus
Starting with speeches by President Fukuhara and other Chuo officials
Upon being presented with his diploma and commemorative goods
Despite seeming somewhat embarrassed at all the attention
“I am honored to have received an Honorary Doctorate Degree today,” said Dr
the conferral is crucial momentum to my academic career in learning.” He concluded his speech by saying thank you in Japanese
the dignified atmosphere of the conferral ceremony was completely changed by the interjection of a heart-warming episode
Germany doesn’t have any convenience stores which are open 24 hours a day
Ehlers revealed how he stocked the guest house refrigerator with ham
cheese and delicious wine when his acquaintances from Japan came to Germany on a late-night flight
Ehlers showed such hospitality out of concern for the weariness of travel
Chuo University was the first to show this kind of hospitality
The consideration was met with great approval by colleagues in Germany
and the tradition continues today as a kind of reciprocal principle
This hospitality is always shown to the Chuo University professors who visit Munster every other year
Student Reporter: Hotaru Yamashita (1st-year student at Faculty of Economics)
I have held an exceptional admiration for Germany
Ehler’s conferral ceremony from a desire to hear real German spoken live
stable economy and polite national character
Ehler’s native country of Germany has a population of about 80 million and a land area of approximately 350,000 square kilometers
Germany possesses a variety of geographic features
Germany is also well-known as a leading environmental nation
Citizens place great importance on their country’s natural environment
Germany is also a popular country among Japanese tourists
with 320,000 Japanese visiting the country annually
Germany’s economy boasts such stability that it is known as the core of the EU
When hearing the word “Germany,” most people probably imagine of beer and potatoes
Musicians might think of Bach or Beethoven
“Any scene from a German neighborhood is beautiful enough to be a painting.”—So says all tourists returning from travel in Germany
the trees growing throughout town…these aspects alone create a beautiful atmosphere
such aspects alone would not be enough to entrance every visitor
In addition to beautiful scenery like that of a painting
the main feature of German landscape is the complete absence of any electric wires or utility poles
Have you ever heard the phrase “undergrounding utility poles?” As it infers
the goal is to remove utility poles from the urban landscape
Removing utility poles preserves the traditional atmosphere of neighborhoods
this project is being actively implemented by France
and other major tourist countries in Europe
Undergrounding also has benefits other than creating a beautiful atmosphere
It prevents secondary and tertiary disasters during earthquakes
if electrical wires are buried underground
there is no danger of fire engines and other emergency vehicles being hampered by electrical wires which have been knocked down or left dangling by earthquakes or tsunami
Burying electrical wires would also eliminate power outages caused by the strong winds of typhoons
Japan is a country prone to natural disasters
Japan is also once again attracting attention from throughout the world thanks to a boom in Japanese cuisine and excitement surrounding the Tokyo Olympics
Japan should actively improve its infrastructure in order to preserve the traditional
beautiful scenery and to prepare for any possible disasters
These were my thoughts upon seeing the face of Dr

the Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam in Japan
The room in Tama Campus that day had an atmosphere which made one feel as if they were in Vietnam
The air was filled with the sound of the trung
pure tone which produced a nostalgic yearning
The trung is said to have come from an ethnic minority living in Thai Nguyen Province
The trung is made of long bamboos whose joints are widely separated
a lecture was given by Counselor Do Van Trung from the Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam in Japan
Vietnam uses a 12-year system of education
3 years of high school and 4 years of university
There is fierce competition during entrance examinations in Vietnam
Children must take examinations to enter the 1st year of primary school
I believe that this is very difficult for young children
time spent playing and having fun is necessary for children to display their inherent cheerfulness
This is a concern for children living in Vietnam lacking this kind of time
Vietnam has a respectable literacy rate of approximately 96%
There are approximately 13 million students and 804 thousand teachers from primary school to high school
Vietnam has 1.55 million university students and 49,000 university instructors
There are also 1.45 million students and 25,000 instructors at junior colleges and vocational colleges
Vietnam has a high ratio of students compared to a single instructor
At a primary school (focusing on preparing students for higher education) in Hanoi
there are about 55 to 60 students per teacher
Japan’s goal for the next 5 years is a ratio of 30 students per teacher
This means that the number of students is twice as high in Japan
It will take time before Vietnam is capable of implementing an education like that of Japan
There are many Vietnamese students studying abroad in Japan
This number has increased at a very high speed in recent years
A large number of Vietnamese students receive scholarships for Master’s Programs and Doctoral Programs
The number of government-sponsored foreign students has stabilized and there is an increase in self-financed foreign study by Vietnamese students
the number of self-financed foreign study in Japan has increased as follows: 810 in 2010
Growth of the Vietnamese economy has increased household income and made foreign study possible
Japan is chosen as a destination for foreign study because it has a good educational environment
a high level of education and an orderly society
and it is viewed as an appropriate country for cultivating the independent spirit of children
Another reason for the increase in Vietnamese students is Japan’s relaxation of entry visas for Vietnamese nationals from July 2013
The number of Vietnamese foreign students is expected to increase even further in the future
I hope that Japan will construct an environment in which Vietnamese children can receive education in Japan
eventually cultivating professionals who will contribute to the formation of Vietnam
the Ayutthaya Kingdom of Thailand interacted with the Ryukyu Kingdom
There are many interesting historical episodes involving the two countries
the Japanese adventurer Nagamasa Yamada contributed to diplomatic relations and trade with Ayutthaya
being rewarded with a high position in Thailand
the Okinawan liquor awamori was introduced from Ayutthaya
while other countries in Southeast Asia were being colonized
Thailand engaged in diplomatic relations with Japan
These relations were part of King Chulalongkorn’s policy of modernization in order to resist pressure from Western countries
Relations between Thailand and Japan gradually grew warmer thanks to cultural similarities such as the Royal Household
approximately 7,000 Japanese corporations currently operate offices in Thailand
There are also approximately 40,000 Japanese employees stationed there
Bangkok has 2,300 students studying at schools for Japanese nationals
a large number second only to Shanghai and China
The Japanese Chamber of Commerce in Bangkok is also the second largest organization in the world
Japan is our most important partner in terms of imports and exports
Japan is also the largest source of foreign direct investment in Thailand
Thailand fulfills an important role for Japanese corporations and the Japanese economy
1.3 million Japanese tourists visited Thailand
260 thousand Thai citizens visited Japan in 2012
280 thousand Thai citizens have traveled to Japan
This friendship has been enhanced now that a visa is no longer necessary to visit Japan
a policy enacted last year in response to a falling yen resulting from Abenomics
Another plus in relations is the direct airline flights connecting with 7 airports in Japan
there are 2,300 foreign students from Thailand in Japan
Thailand is ranked 6th in terms of foreign student in Japan
An incentive for studying in Japan is the prospect of employment at a Japanese corporation after learning the Japanese language and culture

Top>Opinion>Has China's Economy Already Passed the Lewisian Turning Point
Hiromi Yamamoto [profile]
Read in Japanese
One of the problems with China's economy that has recently gained a lot of attention is the debate around the Lewisian turning point of the Chinese economy
the Lewisian turning point is the equilibrium point at which the labor market of a developing nation moves from a state of labor surplus to that of labor shortage
who went on to win the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1979
His dual economy model was further developed in 1961 by G
the economy of a developing country is composed of an agricultural and an industrial sector
and surplus labor from the agricultural sector is absorbed into the industrial sector as the latter develops
The point at which this surplus labor is completely absorbed into the industrial sector is a turning point
with the horizontal axis showing the labor population of a country
take real subsistence wage line on the level
This indicates an unlimited supply of labor
the agricultural sector's labor demand curve (the marginal productivity of agricultural labor) sloping downward to the right from the left vertical axis
and the industrial sector's labor demand curve (the marginal productivity of industrial labor) sloping downward to the left from the right vertical axis
The agricultural labor demand is decided when the agricultural labor demand curve intersects with the real subsistence wage line(the unlimited supply curve of labor)
The industrial labor demand is also decided in the same way
The central remaining portion when the agricultural and the industrial labor demand is subtracted from total workforce is the amount of surplus labor
This surplus labor is normally employed in the agricultural sector
and is in disguised unemployment within that sector
Technological progress shifts the agricultural labor demand curve to the right and the industrial labor demand curve to the left
The turning point is the point of equilibrium where the subsistence wage line intersects with the agricultural and industrial labor demand curves
oo' indicates the population of a country and oa' its real subsistence wages
If A1 is the marginal productivity of agricultural labor and I1 the marginal productivity of industrial labor
the labor portion employed in agriculture is ab and that employed in the industrial sector is de
or the disguised unemployed within the agricultural sector
I1 shifts leftwards m times to Im and A1 rightwards n times to An
the congruous point of equilibrium on the real wages line ae
at which excess labor completely disappears
Thereafter the labor market becomes labor deficient and real wages rise
Most China experts insisit that the country's economy has already passed the turning point around 2004
most analyses for this problem are inadequate in terms of economics
Their basis is on changes in the urban labor market and changes in population structure
There are research papers estimating the marginal productivity of labor in the agricultural sector
and those comparing the marginal productivity of agricultural labor with subsistence wage levels
but there are problems with the accuracy of the data used in some cases
some Japanese academics argue that the turning point has not yet been reached
such as Professor Emeritus Ryoshin Minami at Hitotsubashi University (2009) and Professor Tomoo Marukawa at the University of Tokyo (2010)
Both Professor Minami and Professor Marukawa have estimated the Cobb-Douglas production function of Chinese agriculture
but the problem with the Chinese agricultural data they used is that it includes a wide range of data not only from agriculture but also from forestry
The same problem exists with the production function analyses of Chinese researchers who use the same kind of data
Mitsuo Inada of Kyoto University and I (2010
2012) estimated the Cobb-Douglas production function using as our panel data the production cost data on Japonica rice (non-glutinous rice) collected from different provinces from 1992 to 2009 in National Agricultural Product Cost Survey edited by Price Department of State Development and Reform Commission
Rice production volumes of explained variables were those of seven provinces: Liaoning
The explanatory variables were agricultural working hours
The data that we focused on within this Cost Survey was labor input data
Although the input data conventionally used to estimate production function was the stock variable of worker numbers
the labor input data in this material was expressed by the unit of flow
The equation for converting this gong fen into working hours was not shown for a long time
but in the 2005 edition of National Agricultural Product Cost Survey it was clarified for the first time by the conversion rate of 1 gong fen to 8 hours
Previous production function analyses showed a downward bias in which coefficients of the production elasticity of the labor input variable became negative values
because the flow variable of agricultural production is an explained variable
while the stock variable of worker numbers is an explanatory variable
an irrational result was generated with the negative marginal productivity of labor
It is natural that using a labor input variable as a flow variable rather than a stock variable in the estimation of production function should be fundamental for scientific calculation
This is what is called a matter of dimension in physics
we could estimate positive values for coefficients of the production elasticity of agricultural labor which were statistically significant
the results of comparing the marginal productivity of agricultural labor with real market wages prove that the former are lower than the latter in each province
it is clear that the turning point has yet to be reached in these seven provinces
This is sufficient evidence to refute the opinion that the Chinese economy has already passed the turning point
Although the Chinese government has been implementing a policy of reform and openness since 1979
it basically forbade the migration of peasants to urban areas
The family registers of peasants were not allowed to be incorporated into city family registers
people's communes were decollectivized nationwide
and peasants started to work under the production contract system
and at last under the management contract system
the government adopted a 'li tu bu li' (shift from agriculture without migration from a village) policy which forbade peasants in open unemployment under the management contract system to leave their villages even if they left their own farmland
urban demand for labor increased as the economy developed
and peasants in fact began to migrate to work in cities as 'nong min gong'(peasant workers)
Without the labor of these peasant workers
construction of the infrastructure for the Beijing Olympics and Shanghai Expo would not have been completed
The 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015) included measures for turning peasant workers who had lived in cities for a certain number of years and their families into city residents
Further mitigation policies on the peasant family register problem were gradually brought in during the 1990s
but in March 2001 the Ministry of Public Security published "Views on the Promotion of Reforms to the Family Register Management System in Small Cities and Towns." Then
it was declared that migration of peasants to small cities and towns would be actively promoted
the 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-2010) encouraged settlement of peasants in small- to medium-sized cities
and the 12th Five-Year Plan announced further relaxation policies on such settlement requirements
government policy forbidding the migration of peasants to large cities remains as firm as ever
China's urban population finally overtook its rural population
Urban migration of the peasant workforce will continue to increase in the future and will never stop

Voluntary activities at an orphanage on Cebu Island
Authored and photographed by student reporter Mariko Yajima (3rd year student
I selected this program because I felt that the home-stay at the orphanage would be a fulfilling challenge
I logged into the application form with a strong sense of revolve
Ignoring my parents’ anxieties over safety in the Philippines and solo travel
I also began to feel anxiety as I approached Narita
Although the phrase “Individual volunteers are welcome” was written in the volunteer information
I could almost feel my heart beating with apprehension
I was welcomed by other participants who had arrived earlier
most of them were individual volunteers like me
Everyone was taking lots of photos with their cameras and smartphones
We became friends before boarding the plane in high spirits
feeling as if several days had already passed
The author at slightly right from the center
I was enveloped by hot tropical air when I disembarked the plane in the Philippines
people smiled and waved at us when our eyes met
where strangers look at each other suspiciously when their eyes meet
I also witnessed the hard reality of poverty
A begging mother and child reached out toward the window of our large bus
I was confronted with the current situation of the Philippines where many people suffer from poverty
which is different from Japan where many middle-class households live
I visited the SOS Orphanage and was welcomed by the bright smiles of children
The SOS Orphanage is a home to a tatay (father figure) who manages the facilities
a nanay (mother figure) and children in a total of 12 houses
the children were very friendly and vibrant
I was very surprised by the physical activity of children
it was impossible for me to keep up with the energy of teenagers
I spent my days running around with them as much as possible
I kept bantering with them while I took a break
too?” I was not able to look the children in the eyes and say “Yes.” I felt like I was a terrible adult
a boy who lived in the house where I stayed called out to me
He presented me with a flower that looked like a Casa Blanca lily and said thank you
I could not tell him that his nanay would scold him for being so bold
Although I had joined the program with only the vague motivation to participate in volunteer activities
I felt grateful to so many different people—the Filipino people who accepted us although we were strangers
the tour participants with whom I lived together in an unfamiliar environment
and the family members who saw me off warmly
After clearing the tough challenge of finding employment
I hope that I can keep my promise with them
Worried by the devastation reported by television and newspapers
the SOS Orphanage was not damaged and children there are healthy
damage was reported at the SOS Orphanage on the Island of Leyte and the entire island is in turmoil
Many foods are flavored strongly with pepper in order to cope with the heat
I ate a dessert that was produced by dusting a moderately sweet banana with brown sugar and deep-frying it
The local rice is drier than Japanese rice
There is a custom of eating rice with roux like curry
I came to like a stewed dish produced by simmering banana buds called “hearts” together with bananas and oxtail in peanut sauce
It was so delicious that I had extra helping three times
This is a program for interacting with the children of SOS Orphanage on Cebu Island
the Philippines and assisting them in daily living
see the travel journal Globe-trotter Travel Guidebook
Anyone from teenagers to people in their 60s can join the program
The author participated in a program for college students

I was majoring in French literature at the Faculty of Letters as an undergraduate student
When he talked about the German philosopher Heidegger
This indicated to me that he was a special philosophy professor who also had great knowledge of literature
he was also organizing a “reading group” in which participants read and discussed philosophy books
His reading group was one of the activities that I was looking forward to before I joined Chuo University
and so I was excited to attend the group meetings
Although he is now famous for his Heidegger study
he used to read Husserl (German philosopher) a lot before Hidegger and Merleau-Ponty (French philosopher) before Husserl
Kaganoi I took his classes because I was interested in Merleau-Ponty
I was reading Sartre and getting carried away
The book was “The Structure of Behaviour” (Misuzu Shobo)
I receive comments on my book from even a high school reader.” “Professor
Nakamura I originally enjoyed Wittgenstein and read a lot of his books
Kida was using Wittgenstein’s “Philosophical Investigations” in his graduate school seminar because I thought he was a scholar of Heidegger
because I could not understand Wittgenstein just by reading his books alone
Kida was that he discussed with students on an equal footing
“You are right.” There were hardly any professors who agreed with students like that
“There is something wrong with your translation”
Even I would get upset if a young person questions my work (laugh)
Suda He never suppressed the students with his authority
What is written in philosophy books and textbooks was everything to him
the most important thing was to read and interpret texts
Regardless of the person’s position or interpretation
he was serious about listening to their views
Suda I am thinking about making a list of books that we read at the reading group he hosted
I had been attending the group meetings since 1984 when I began working at Chuo University
I heard that the group started about 10 years before that time
Most of the books we read there were the “Notes” of Heidegger
the complete works were published one after another
Every time when a new edition was published
Kida was tenacious and read the text word by word
I understood that his bold interpretation came from such attitude
Collection of the Philosophers in the 20th Century)
because it was not about what Heidegger wrote
but it provided explanations on what Heidegger did not write
the studies on Heidegger must have been behind compared to now and there had been very few published materials on Heidegger
it was a very bold and seemingly reckless attempt
I believe such an attempt can only be done based on confidence after thoroughly reading his books
Even if he had a good suspicion about something
he decided to write about Heidegger in the 1950s but actually published “Heidegger” in 1983
It took him 30 years to prepare for the book
and he maintained his will all these times
Muraoka The structure of “Heidegger” is also unique
Kida believed in the importance of understanding “motivation” for understanding philosophical thought
That is why he clarified his own motivation first in the book
the mainstream idea was “philosophy should be the objective.” It must have required courage to write about something personal in the beginning of the book
Kida for me is “Construction of Heidegger’s ‘Being and Time’” (Iwanami Gendai Bunko)
Even though “Being and Time” is an uncompleted book
Kida fully constructed the uncompleted part
It should be translated into foreign languages as a valuable book of Heidegger study
Other researchers seem to be swayed by the obscurity of Heidegger
Kida confronted Heidegger as an equal philosopher
Muraoka He must have a perspective that is different from usual people
while he was always reading with a broad view
That is how he found clues from unexpected places
His book “Eventuality and Destiny” published in 2001 is also a great book
An enormous amount of knowledge is concentrated in such a small book
Other researchers seem to be swayed by obscurity of Heidegger
Suda He must have a perspective that is different from usual people
Kaganoi Although he published two books about Heidegger
it is unfortunate that he did not publish the definitive edition
he would have completed a robust Heidegger theory
Kida had written more books about Merleau-Ponty before he moved to Heidegger study
He would not write a book or enter the field
if he did not fully understand or was not so enthusiastic about the field
This is why he left us some areas that we can work on

Top>Hakumon CHUO [2011 Early Spring Issue]>[People shown on the cover] Award recipient in the Future Dream Idea Contest to conduct user interface research at Tokyo University Graduate School
In the 3rd Techno-Renaissance Japan (sponsored by Nikkei Inc.),which was known as "the Future Dream for Enterprise Research Idea Contest," Ayumi Kato received the Techno-Renaissance Japan Award
with the theme of "This product should make for a brighter future," pitted ideas from science and technology-orientated students against each other
Kato's entry titled Applications which extract onomatopoeia included in word-of-mouth information and search for food preferences
Onomatopoeia is the overall term for onomatopoeic and mimetic words that give more intuitive and emotional expression to things and scenes
and which are often used in our everyday life
The catalyst that led to the award-winning idea came from a familiar place
"When looking for restaurants on the internet," Kato says
"in addition to a restaurant's atmosphere and prices
the only evaluation ranking in regard to taste is 'delicious.' There is no information on the way in which something is delicious."
Kato says she focused on "onomatopoeic words used in word-of-mouth information for bagels such as 'chewy' and 'fluffy' "
and adds "I thought about bringing those phrases to the top of food evaluation items."
She focused on onomatopoeic and mimetic words that can convey slight nuances that can't be described well in plain language
Kato explains that "I thought it would be good to have something like this in my third year at university." She received a good response when she made a presentation as a fourth year student in her research laboratory
For a long time Kato thought "I want to create a simple
user-centered system that everybody can use." Looking back
"I had it in my head when I first entered university
I became even more conscious of it in my third year after meeting seniors at conferences and taking Professor Toshikazu Kato's class."
While there is a tendency for students to spend their university days aimlessly and passively
Kato observed society from her own viewpoint
an event for female students in the Faculty of Science and Engineering which looks at career advancement
Kato was one of the members who changed WISE
into one which involved students in its operations
it is important to have a system which puts the user at the forefront and not only promotes the "fastest" and "smallest" products
as the situation has been up to now." In order to realize this dream
Kato decided to continue her studies at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies
Kato displays an upbeat attitude about her new research when she says
which incorporates an artistic viewpoint that is absolutely necessary for interfaces
Everyone is taking up their own challenges."
the road to acceptance into Tokyo University's graduate school had its difficulties
and if there were points she had trouble with
Kato would actively seek advice from professors
"All the professors were accommodating in giving me guidance
was at the university every day during the summer holidays just before my exams to give me encouragement
and Professor Toshikazu Kato also gave me a great amount of moral support."
"Products which only focus on function leave the user behind
That is why I want to learn about user interfaces," says Kato
who we can pin our hopes on for creating a future with a bridge between people and gadgets

Seyama paired with Yuka Sakamoto (3rd year student in the Faculty of Letters) in the mixed doubles at January's national table tennis championship
This outstanding achievement was also a first for a Chuo University pair in the national mixed doubles competition
Their opponents in the final were the strong pairing of last year's champions Kenta Matsudaira (Waseda University) and Kasumi Ishikawa (Miki House JSC)
Ishikawa were Japanese champions in men's and women's singles
Seyama predictably said of the Chuo pair's straight set whitewash
"we never even thought about winning the competition," and "we just went from strength to strength."
There was little time to practice before the tournament
but they were able to undergo worthwhile training precisely because they are a Chuo senior and junior

Looking back at his four years at university
I think I grew mentally more than technically." "From the outset
so I enjoy doubles more than singles." But in the competitive lifestyle at university
"I want to be stronger." "I think that is where I matured the most," he says when giving a self-analysis
Entering his fourth year he became captain and started to look at his surroundings
Until then he says he was free to do as he pleased because he had his seniors above him
but after being given the responsibility to run the table tennis club
"I had to start thinking about what I needed to do to make the players around me stronger."
The bonds among the table tennis club members are strong
he holds those in his year in particularly high regard and expresses his gratitude in saying
"I couldn't have made it here without my classmates
We helped one another out both in our studies and in everyday life
I can talk to them about anything and they are friends for life."
Seyama will enter a general company and compete as a corporate player on the company's table tennis team
But he won't devote all his time to table tennis as he has until now
He has an outlook for the future with his sights fixed on a new life where "work will be at the forefront."
